[Elecraft] K2 dual receive!
With all the talk about the K3 and it's 2nd receiver, maybe those with a K2 are feeling left out? It's cheap and easy to adapt a K2 to provide a buffered output for a second receiver, a muting circuit is also needed for the 2nd receiver. While not as elegant as a K3 with an internal 2nd receiver, it's a simple weekend project that doesn't require hole drilling or any modification to the K2 that is non reversible. [Elecraft] [K3] : K3 zero beating
Hi Werner, My understanding is that the XG2 is not a precision tool and you should therefore not try to align your K3 by zero-beating it with the XG2. Try doing it with WWV (or RWM in Europe). I think I also very saw recently an interesting zero-beating procedure using Spectrogram explained by Don, W3FPR on the Reflector. 73 de Raymond, F4FNT K3/100 # 615, K2/100 # 5,636 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 SSB Problem
I just finished constructing the KSB2 Adapter and have installed the unit and am at the alignment stage (P-19 of the manual). The Course Carrier Balance Adjustment went fine. When I plug in the microphone and try the fine Carrier Balance Adjustment the unit begins to transmit at full output (10W plus) and continues to do so until I unkey the mic. It makes no difference if the power is set to minimum instead of 5W or whether LSB or USB. Any suggestions will be appreciated. [Elecraft] Re: K3 - COM port iterating ...
On my XP laptop I run two USB to serial adapters. I took the precaution of buying two of the same type as Windows tries to install a driver every time you plug one in a port that hasn't had one plugged in previously... Using just one type means less hassle setting it all up. I've labelled my all USB ports as Comm 4, Comm 2, etc. and they always seem to use the same port number, mostly I plug in an adapter after Windows is up and running. I run a logging program on one port and a GPRS phone for DX Cluster access on the other. I use the laptop out portable and it all seems to work fine. Maybe Vista is more fussy but I thought it was supposed to be an improvement over XP? 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 - I wonder if there's a way to tell this thing to be the same COM port each time I plug it in? [Elecraft] K3: ESSB Initial Observations
Hi Everyone, My preliminary opinion on the K3 ESSB Beta Version is excellent. V2.23 installed here with no funnies. Config was a snap. My first Q's last night were on 75m with a round table of G stations in England and Wales. All reported to me that I had fantastic audio without knowing first what I was running here. Then we did an a/b with ESSB at 3.6 KHz and stock SSB at 2.8 KHz and all reported that ESSB was more pronounced and punchy than with the 2.8 KHz bandwidth but also smoother. I can hear the difference in the monitor as well. It is very smooth and full without being too bassy. I am running a Heil BM-10ic electret condenser mic element with MIC = 40 and COMP = 16. Tonight I'll hook up my Heil 781 and give it a workout. Wayne told me that the ESSB TX EQ (TX*EQ) will be a feature coming along later on, so for the time being there is only one TX EQ for SSB transmit whether normal SSB or ESSB. The K3 never fails to amaze me. With ESSB already in Rx and now Tx it has just become an incredible SSB radio. Get the 6 KHz filter and give it a try. 73 de N1LQ-Dave ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] K3 ( or K2 ) with a Kenwood SM230 station monitor
Keith, I know Tom, N0SS, has has an SM-230 in line for quite some time. Far predates his K2, but is a useful tool. Especially useful if you are also making your electrons taller with an Amplifier. The SM-230 lets you monitor your output in a Voltage vs. time domain: It is a specialized Oscilloscope. The Kx is pretty good about not making ugly electrons, but the amplifier you drive over the edge could. The other thing I remember about the SM-230 and Tom's station is that it induced some strange SWR issues by the time we got up to 28Mhz. Combination of lengths of coax, impedance of the unit itself, and a few other oddities caused a bit of a problem for a contest a few years ago. Just keep in mind when you put it in line you may need to shorten or lengthen the coax runs a bit to get things happy. Good luck, and enjoy the SM-230. [Elecraft] K3 FPF Load failed
It has been about 3 weeks since I last switched on my K3 and when I did so just now, VFO A said FPF Load and VFO B said Pending. It was working OK when I last switched it off. I decided that the best thing to do would be to load the latest beta firmware, which was what I was going to do anyway, but the K3 Utility reported: Sending firmware file hfpf0002.hex to FPF 21:40:28 Send FPF firmware failed at load address x7b1f 21:40:28 FPF program load failed 21:40:28 Ready The receiver appears to be working and I can tune the VFO, although I have no idea where I am as the VFO display just reads FPF Load / Pending. While typing this I managed to clear the problem by pressing Band Down until I got to the lower bands, when I saw that frequencies were appearing again. When I press Band Up frequencies are now appearing, but when I move up to 21MHz or any higher band VFO B briefly displays ERR PL1 before showing the frequency. Having got to this point, I tried to upload the firmware again and this time it appears to have been successful. So what went wrong? The previous firmware was, I think, 2.13 beta. RE: [Elecraft] K3 FPF Load failed
The quick route is to retry the firmware load. If it fails hard, you most probably have a communications cabling problem. In all my testing of the K3 Utility (and I've tried really hard to duplicate nightmare scenarios) I've never been in a situation where a complete firmware reload wouldn't solve the problem. Sometimes I have been testing a marginal USB to Serial Adapter that just didn't work out, but replacing the cable with a good one has always been enough. The K3 MCU bootstrap code is protected from mischief and power failures at inconvenient times. Any individual load might fail, but retrying it should cure the problem. [Elecraft] ESSB Works Well
Lance, From my test here, any receiver capable of a 2.8 khz passband will hear the K3 3.0khz ESSB signal as if it were more like an AM signal, except that the AGC is not held constant by a carrier (on the receive end). That is to say it sounds a lot like Drake controlled carrier AM to me. Or, like listening to an AM shortwave broadcast with a SSB receiver. An IC756Pro, 746Pro, Orion, Jupiter, Flex, all will hear a significant increase in fidelty from K3 essb transmit at 3khz as compared to standard K3 ssb at 2.7 khz. My Drake R4C on the other hand has a strict 2.4 khz SSB filter. To receivers like this, the OMNI C, K2, and some others the band will still sound like it always has (communications grade) even though there might be some EESB stations transmitting. I hope you have something wider than the 2.7 khz filter coming, although 2.7 (from my tests) does a fairly inpressive job of producing quality audio from the K3 at 3khz essb.
