[Elecraft] Problems with K3 s/n 1826

2008-10-01 Thread Phil and Christina
I just finished building my new K3 (all except the 100W amp that awaits
final checkout). The rig seems to power up OK, but returns error messages
when I do the Synthesizer Calibration. It returns Err VCO with E 00374 data
and/or ERR VC4 with E 00039 data. I checked the seating of the oscillator,
the KREF3 and KSYN3 modules and the three TMP cables, but the results are
the same. What is going on and what can I do? Thank you.

Phil Shepard

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for September 28th & 29th, 2008

2008-10-01 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
Both nets went very well tonight. I had no QSB on anyone but there were a
few comments of it occurring on my signal. QRN got bad on 40 meters but it
waited for a little while. QRM was bad at times on both nets. Tuners and
folks calling across me happened more than once but that has become normal.
The weather was wonderful up here today; no fire necessary to keep us warm.
I had fun tarring various parts of the roof until net time. I had reports from
California that cooler weather is on the way. Keep it down there for at least
a few more days because I am enjoying 80 degrees and sun after the cold and wet
of last week.

Some very large numbers of QNI are being accrued. That is gratifying. Keeps
me working at these nets each week. Thank you! This report is being written
after the second net but will not get posted until I get put onto Verizon's
repair list. I finally got the phones back on Tuesday. Seems they do not work
on weekends ;) Since I drove into town to find out about the phones I made
sure to pay a few bills and fill out some QSL cards for my mailbox in Buxton.
I could not see wasting a 30 mile journey into town just to make a phone call.
   Until next week stay well,

Re: [Elecraft] Young K2 Builder

2008-10-01 Thread AJSOENKE
Congratulations on your accomplishment. Last spring a group of students in my
electronics class undertook the challenge of building a K2 (SN6281) It is now
part of ARS KI6PRK at Dos Pueblos high school in Goleta CA. It was completed
just before school let out for the summer and the new classes are just
getting used to it. 3 students from last year are still on campus and currently
taking the classes along with 17 of their classmates. We have done a little
hamming and have two students nearing there general exams. Latest news is I
have
acquired a 60 ft tubular crank-up tower for the club station. Donated by K6HOZ,
who has moved to Las Vegas to run his business, he needed to remove it from
the prior residence. It's nice to have generous friends. My K3, sn 31 has
spent many hours in the classroom also. FYI, the students who built ranged in
age from 15 to 17 and did all the work themselves. My contribution was to post
an inquiry on this list when it was deemed necessary to reset the firmware.
One problem was experienced and fixed when I admonished them to review the
assembly instructions to the letter and they found they had wound a toroid on
the
SWR bridge backwards, the one place that it is crucial.

73 es hope to hear you on the air! Al WA6VNN

Hi Lyle and Don and Monty

Finally figured out the problem.
I had the downloaded zip file in C:\K3 Utility\beta 2r45
but when I unzipped it, it created a new subfile,
C:\K3 Utility\beta 2r45\k3fw2r45.zip. I finally copied
the contents of this file back into C:\K3 Utility\beta 2r45
and things started to work.
Whew! At least I was able to muddle through. That's
what I get for downoading infrequently.

I appreciate everyone's input. We finally got it together.

Once you have confirmed the correct firmware is loaded, scroll to

Bob,

Check your firmware level. It sounds like you do not have the latest
beta loaded.

If it is not 2.45 MCU and 1.92 DSP, then you do not have the noise gate
installed.

You must follow the steps to download the beta version, because this has
only been released at a beta. The instructions for downloading beta
firmware can be found at http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm.

[Elecraft] K3 Transmit problem

2008-10-01 Thread paul hendershott

I must have inadvertently changed a setting because I'm having trouble
transmitting. My last contacts were FB during a contest a few weeks back. Same
up-to-date firmware, no changes. Now when I start talking with the VOX settings
on my MD-2 mic ( set for "fpl bias" when I checked the settings in the MIC SEL
Main menu) I get a full carrier out with no modulation and I can no longer hear
my voice being transmitted, only a loud hissing noise keeps transmitting even
though I've stopped talking on VOX. Any suggestions? I reloaded the firmware
twice with no change. I'm sure I'll feel silly when I figure this out :-)

Congratulations.

When I was 18, preparing for the RAE I thought 20 was old. Needless to say I
don't think that any more. You must be one of the youngest builders - I
think the average builder age is something like 50.

You are not too far away so perhaps we might manage a QSO some time after
Christmas - I work at RAL just down the A34. Let me know if you have any
troubles finishing the kit, not that that is very likely. There is plenty of
test gear around the lab. You are doing the right thing separating radio and
studies, keep off the real ale too. Physics is a hard enough subject.

Re: [Elecraft] Mac software for the K2

2008-10-01 Thread Don Wilhelm

Luis,

You cannot use DTR to key the K2 (but it is OK on the K3). You will
have to split out the DTR pin and run it through a transistor to
activate the K2 keying.

*Periodic warning* - even though the K2 AUX I/O connector is the same
size and shape as a PC serial port, that *does not* make it an RS-232
connector - yes, there are 3 pins that conform to the RS-232 signals
TXD, RXD and signal ground, but that is as far as it goes, the rest are
internal K2 signals used for communicating with other Elecraft equipment
such as the KAT100 and the XV series transverters. Plugging a computer
serial cable directly into the K2 can *damage* your K2.

RE: [Elecraft] sidetone range

2008-10-01 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

I don't know how high you want to go but B5 is within 3 Hz of
990 and E6 is within 2 Hz of 1320. In both cases the 2-3 Hz
is probably within the error of the reference.

At higher tones even 5 Hz (C6 = 1046.5, D6 = 1174.7) is probably
acceptable to all but the most highly trained ear since the
error is < .5%. I know that being able to use 520 Hz (C5=523.3
Hz) is far more natural than either 500 or 550 Hz.

Dear Joe,

I do use 740Hz as a work-around. But, for me, the higher the better.
From F#5 to A5 makes a difference. I'd go even higher than 880Hz if
there were available consonant tones between 880 and 1000. But 880 is
the highest possible with 10Hz increments, provided of course that
Wayne and Lyle can be convinced to raise the bar above 800.

Congratulations! But I don't think you're the youngest to build an
Elecraft radio. Last year we were hearing on this reflector about a K2
school project which I think was a high-school aged group. Someone on
this list will know for sure.

W2CVZ completed his K1 when he was 11 years old. Yes, I know, the K1
is much simpler than the K2.

We're all fortunate that age doesn't matter in amateur radio.

[Elecraft] Young K2 Builder

2008-10-01 Thread m0trx

Hello all,

Having taken delivery of K2 #6593 a few weeks ago I have made good progress
with construction and the rig has passed all of the initial power-up tests
(control board, front panel board etc). I must say that the quality of this
kit has really impressed me so far and has more than met my expectations.

[Elecraft] Polystyrene Caps - Elecraft K1

stability and hence, my reason for moving the caps up to the top of the
board. I fully realize that flexing a cabinet while operating is not a
normal procedure, but I would nevertheless like to optimize VFO component
placement in the K1.

One end of Polystyrene cap C12 is connected to circuit ground. Polystyrene
caps offer the benefit in that one end of the cap represents the outer
foil -- thus allowing the designer to make use of its inherent shielding
abilities. Most Polystyrene caps have a red tracer on one end to designate
the outer foil lead, but the caps as used in my K1 have no such tracer.
Unfortunately, the K1 manual's part section does not list the caps'
manufacturer. Otherwise, I would refer to a datasheet.

So, my questions is -- can the shielding polarity of the Polystyrene caps as
used in the K1 be determined by looking at the orientation of the part value
(i.e., 1200J) as printed on the cap body? Tnx!

[Elecraft] Two Elecraft Speakers in Moses Lake, WA on Saturday October 4

2008-10-01 Thread Bruce Prior

The Pacific Northwest VHF Society Conference takes place this coming weekend at
the Best Western Lake Front Hotel in Moses Lake, Washington. That's east of
the Cascade Mountains on I-90. All of the formal events are on Saturday.
There is also laser and 10 GHz show and tell on Friday afternoon.

The keynote speaker will be weak-signal pioneer and Nobel Laureate Joe Taylor
K1JT.

Other speakers are Elecraft DSP developer Lyle Johnson KK7P and Elecraft CEO
Eric Swartz WA6HHQ.

In addition, ARRL Contest Branch Manager Sean Kutzko KX7X, ARRL VHF/UHF
Advisory Committee Northwestern Division member Jim Aguirre W7DHC, and Alaskan
VHFer Ed Cole KL7UW will give presentations.

The Pacific Northwest VHF Society is a lively and well-organized group whose
conferences are routinely excellent. This year's meeting is looking like
another winner.

See or Google: Pacific Northwest VHF Society for details.

Seems very unlikely. Are you sure your email tool isn't doing a 'reply
to all' instead of a 'reply to sender' ??

In gMail a 'reply' just goes to the person who posted the message. A
'reply to all' (which I've used here) goes to the poster, and to the
mail list.

Fred:

"native swr, as measured by the K3, is..."

How did you get the K3 to measure the native SWR numerically?

That is exactly what I need to do - on another project.

Thanks Gary,
I redid the power calibration and the tuner tunes the dummy load all ok.
It still struggled with the 40 dipole (native swr, as measured by the
K3, is 1.6:1)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 MARS mod

2008-10-01 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
The Mars mod is just a program that Aptos will supply that opens up
the frequency - there isn't a specific version of the firmware as far
as I know.
I haven't used it since I'm not planning on transmitting outside UK
band - but then we don't have the requirements of a country that could
swallow England many times over! And we don't have the environment
with the same risks. :-)

I believe the reason it is not 'just opened up' is that certain
countries would refuse an import license if it was not limited.

I think Elecraft are having a hard time predicting when a certain
feature will be available for a number of reasons. One being the
amazing take-up of the K3. And another being the amazing response to
end user requests by Wayne. I'm happy to wait and see it all emerge, I
can't keep up with what comes out now!

[Elecraft] K3 MARS mod

2008-10-01 Thread Gary Gregory
Hello All,

I have read with interest the MARS mod comments and I am a little
non-plussed as I happen to live "outside" of the centre of the universe
(read Australia) and in the land down under we have various frequencies
outside of the "amateur bands" which are used regularly in Australia.

For example, we have the RFDS service, the motor home and caravan
frequencies as well as "Cattle Station frequencies" and the 4WD allocated
frequencies. Although these may be unique to Australia, they are nonetheless
viable and licensed frequencies available to residents in Australia and
having said that, if you are the proud owner of a K3 then you are placed
somewhat at a disadvantage as the K3 is not readily able to TX on these
frequencies without sending a request to Aptos for a firmware upgrade. To
list all of the frequencies is easy enough but when you examine them closely
you would have, I would suspect a programmers nightmare as the
bands/frequencies are all over the place. Just open it up, it is up to the
operator to comply to the law, not the manufacturer.

Sometimes it pays to hang on to a radio like the TS-450/440 and use it day
to day and save the "special" radio for another time.

To date we are still awaiting the DVR FW and hardware, we are still holding
our breath on many "advertised" features that have yet to be released and
yet we still see Aptos responding to special interest groups that wish to
have "features" added that addresses their user requirements while it
appears that the original advertised features and benefits are left to a
later date.

The K3 is a great radio, of that there is no doubt, but for some of us
owners we would like to see more news on WHEN the advertised features are
going to be released. Spring, Summer, Fall etc is fine, but, we have also
been patient for a long time and maybe now is the time to commit adequate
resources to catch up.

This is only an observation and thought on my part and is not a criticism of
any group of users or for that matter the guys at Elecraft, I personally
would like to see a little more information forthcoming from Aptos on timing
for new releases of firmware and what those features will be. Fixes are of
course a priority and need to be released ASAP, Elecraft have an outstanding
record in this regard and should be congratulated for their terrific
efforts.

73's,
Gary

As Simon says, it is actually Winkey's protocol for communicating with
any external application. Full details are given in the data sheets for
the Winkey 1 and Winkey 2 devices, downloadable from www.k1el.com
