Re: [Elecraft] [KAT1] 1N34 Diode replacement
I don't know if we're talking about the same diode. The broken diode is not in the bridge used to measure fwd/rfl power. I'm talking about D3, connecting the output of the buffer op-amp U2A to the RFDET/DATA pin on P2. I don't know what it's for (what is RFDET/DATA ? I don't have the K1 schematics right here). I have quintuple band stacking memories. I use the first ten memories programmed in strict band order (you soon get used to which band is which button) at 1kHz up from the band edge. I then have the four M1 to M4 buttons programmed at four frequencies within each band, two CW and two SSB. This gives me the ability to do very rapid band and frequency/mode within band changes. [Elecraft] [K3] More PF keys - resend
I sent this over a month ago and had no response at all as far as I know - I'm not expecting a response or direct reply from Wayne et'al - they have plenty to do, but I'm surprised others didn't shoot me down in flames or comment? I've been meaning to send this for a while, but it’s a wish that should probably be some way down the list (I'd prefer Ultimatic keying first :-) Unless I am mistaken, there are only 2 PF keys if you wish to use the M1-M4 for message play, which I plan on when I get the KDVR3, so I've avoided using them from day one (might have been a mistake). I'd like to have more programmable function buttons. One way of doing this could be an option to make PF1 and PF2 introductory buttons, where by you HOLD PFx followed by a TAP of a number key 0-9, that would give two banks of ten keys. The only issue then is that you have to HOLD PFx. Now, I don't tend to use RIT or XIT much (maybe I should, maybe they are used more in CW which I've not got into yet), so my suggestion is that there is also an option to switch the TAP/HOLD function of PF1 and PF2, so TAP introduces memory functions and HOLD is RIT/XIT. I'd be interested in this last possibility as an option, even if the banks of 10 programmable function keys could not be done. To summarise I'm suggesting: + a CONFIG option to switch the PF keys from single key to group key, maybe CONFIG:PFX GRP=OFF (the default) and CONFIG:PFX GRP=ON + if CONFIG:PFX GRP=ON, the numeric keys contain 10 functions for each of PF1 PF2, introduced by a PF key, no need for a terminating key, you just get 10 memories per PF key + a CONFIG option to switch RIT/XIT and PF1/PF2 TAP/HOLD function, maybe CONFIG:PFX TAP=OFF (the default) and CONFIG:PFX TAP=ON. Also, one reason why I want more programmable keys is for B-A, one solution would be to allow us to configure XFIL to be be B-A instead. I haven't used XFIL since I first tried it, so being able to say CONFIG:XFIL=nor or CONFIG:XFIL=BA or ALT might be an option. Yes, it's easy to suggest these things after the fact - maybe I just need to learn to use the MENU more. Ah, the other option is to allow us to promote CONFIG option to the MAIN MENU, rather like short menus/ my menu options? 73 de M0XDF, K3 #174 -- It came to me that reform should begin at home, and since that day I have not had time to remake the world. -Will Durant, historian (1885-1981) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 at KH6LC in Stew Warmup
Curt Knight wrote: Considering recent posts, maybe you would be interested to hear about the setup we used at KH6LC during the Stew Warmup. I brought my K3 SN 469, which has 2.7, 1.8, and 0.4 filters in the main and matched 2.7 and 0.4 in the sub. Now I know that I should have sprung for the other 1.8 filter and saved myself the labor of installing it later. Snip The roofing filter mismatch between 400 Hz and 1800 Hz bandwidth was sometimes noticeable, but it wasn't a big thing. One mod I would like to see would be an option to have the subreceiver bandwidth and shift track the main as it's an aggravation to have to double click the AB when you want that. Of course, you would like the option of having them separate, too. ??? What firmware were you using. Everything in the Sub's DSP should track the Main when in Diversity mode. Your comment about filters is also confusing. If you had DSP set to 400 or below, both roofing filters should have been 400 Hz. If just above 400 Hz DSP, you would have had 1.8k in the Main and 2.7k in the Sub. If you didn't like the offset effect, you could have disabled the 1.8k in the main so that both 2.7k filters would have been enabled above 400 Hz DSP BW. This K3 was the subject of a post last week (Bad CW Note) and I can report that this problem seemed to us to not be present last weekend, but those of you who heard us may tell a different story and if so I would be happy to hear from you directly. In between the post and the weekend, I had partly disassembled the case to look into putting a strap directly from the antenna tuner RF ground to the rear panel connectors, but I decided I didn't have the time to finish so I just replaced the panels, and maybe that improved the ground. On the other hand, we did get bad reports on the CW keying. One report said that it sounded like the keying was soft. Another report said distinctive, but not fatally obnoxious. It appears now that this is a problem mainly with the computer keying from the rear panel jack, and not the CW generated from the internal keyer, and that it may be connected to the TX DLY setting that I had at its maximum value to accommodate my old TL922 linear. I have backed the setting off to 15 and the CW weight looks more consistent on my scope now. At KH6LC there is a modern linear and the nominal value should be enough. We are still looking into this and also the buzz on the note and the story may change. You may want to check that the RX ANT port in the KXV3 has had the RX Isolation Mod installed. If not, you may have been getting RF feedback into the K3 via the RX ANT input. http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_app_notes.htm 73, Bill W4ZV -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-at-KH6LC-in-Stew-Warmup-tp1362543p1363818.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Re: PF KEYS
Oh, and you can use HOLD M1-M4 too, so there are actually 10 PF keys, provided you don't want to use M1-M4 for anything else. That includes Bank 2. so if you want to use M1-M4 for a message, you can't use it as a PF key. Not sure how DVR memories will co-exist with CW memories - I hope by mode, but until it ships, I won't know. And although that may be far to complicated for some, it's not for me. And I did say it should be an option controlled by Config, so those that don't like the idea, don't have to use it. This can improve signal copy during fading, and adds a spatial (L/R) effect to signals. ###DIVERSITY MODE further enhances this capability by slaving the sub receiver’s mode, filter settings, and VFO to the main receiver.### To enter diversity mode, hold SUB until you see “DIVRSTY” on VFO B (about 2 seconds). The kHz decimal point of the VFO A display will flash slowly as a reminder that diversity mode is in effect. Snip ** Diversity mode copies Main DSP settings including WIDTH, SHIFT, RIT offsets, etc. to the Sub. Of course it cannot correct for different XFILs between the Main and Sub, but you can disable any filters in Main that are not in the Sub if desired. In my case, I have 2.7k/1.8k/500/200 in Main and 2.7k/500 in Sub. If I set WIDTH to 250 Hz, the 200 will be enabled in Main but only the 500 will be enabled in Sub. I think the K3 with 1.8Khz filter throttled down as narrow as intelligibility allows will be the perfect ticket for 20M this weekend. I agree. [Elecraft] K3 What mics are proplr using for SSB?
Ron, almost anything works well. I started off using a Kenwood MC-43S fist mic as used on the TS570 and similar transceivers, they are very low cost and reasonable quality. I now use a Sony home audio recording mic on a floor stand with a cheap foot switch. The microphone is perhaps not ideal as it is stereo, battery powered, electret and quite expensive, but I had it knocking around and it sounds good! I needed to use a 3.5mm stereo to 3.5mm mono adapter. The model is ECM-MS907. I am not suggesting anyone specifically goes out and buys one of these. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 = Looking to find what people are using for SSB mics. Rich, I will be using my K3 rather than my usual 7800 this weekend, so I can give you a better report then, but that I am willing to do it speaks something to that; so far my experience has been good enough to warrant it. Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB is it really better
Rich, I've used the K3 in both SSB and CW contests from P49Y. SSB works great, in part because it retains very good intelligibility when cranked down pretty narrow (i.e., below 2.0 kHz). It seems to work better to use the Hi and Lo mode instead of Shift and Width. OTOH, for CW, the rx is really great because of the ability to disregard strong adjacent signals. While that performance capability exists in SSB also, in a contest it isn't as dramatic an improvement over other receivers for the simple reason that in SSB, much of the interference you are trying to eliminate is really in the passband. It's splatter and distortion products from adjacent signals, many of which may have their processors turned way up. The K3 doesn't generate the digital byproducts as my Pro2 does, and that is helpful, but there remains the real interference caused by the other signals. So the net improvement from the great rx qualities doesn't turn out to be as useful in SSB as in CW. In other words, the bands are still a mess in a major SSB contest, and the best rx in the world can't eliminate all the mess. 73, andy, ae6y - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, October 22, 2008 7:42 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 SSB is it really better I'm curious what others are finding with the K3 on SSB in contest conditions. [Elecraft] K3: CWT and Volume wish list
I have a couple of minor things that I would like to see included if at all possible. The first is the CWT feature. I wish it would stay on when I swap bands or go to SSB then back to CW. Being king of tone deaf this is a great feature for me but it always toggles off. The second item has to do with my hearing also. Being an old fart, my left ear is not as good as my right. It would be nice to be able to balance the left and right channel to account for this. I am sure the AFX feature would work better. I know I can add an outboard control to do this but I like a clean setup without a bunch of extr wires and controls hanging around. I also want to say how much I like running PSK with the paddles, I've had a lot of fun with that feature. Also getting ready to put in the KRX3 module, this ought to really add to the radio. OK... May I ask why? I have seen it done in commercial products and I recently did it when I was assembling my SoftRock receivers because of my concerns with the #30 wire breaking. Re: [Elecraft] from John K3JK
John, Remove the KAT100 AUX I/O cable and see if you can connect. If so, the problem is in the KAT100 or its cable to the K2. There is likely something that you inadvertently touched (and changed) in the KAT100 during the firmware upgrade. The N4PY software (and HRD) do not use any of the signals that are required for K2 to KAT100 communication, but the conductors involved do come near one another in the cable that attaches to the K2, so you may find your problem there. There is one quite simple thing to check first - the cable plugging between the KAT100 and the K2 - the housing with the 2 cables attached must connect to the K2 - if that connector is found on your KAT100, your K2 to computer communications will not work because there are no wires present for the two RS-232 signals. 73, Don W3FPR John Klokis wrote: hi everyone, would like to ask the group about a problem. Heil Pro set Plus with HC4-DX and HC5 full range elements, but you can get great audio reports with a $ 15,- headset/microphone. What I like about the Pro Set Plus is that it covers your ears so QRM inside the shack doesn't bother me that much. That really helps during Multi/Multi SSB Contesting ;-) I also find it to be very ergonomic. 73, Maarten PD2R 2008/10/22 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Heil Gold Line. Narrow and Wide settings are both fbom. Re: [Elecraft] K3 mobile
I put over 500,000 miles on a K2 in a rough mobile environment (18 wheeler) I have a K3 now, since January of this year, and spend about 90% of my time on the highways and 10% bouncing up and down mountains going in and out of Windmill sites. I have yet to have the K2 or K3 have ANY problems what so ever. The radio's Will take the abuse, without any user mods are fixes. 73 Gary W4GNS I have seen it done in commercial products and I recently did it when I was assembling my SoftRock receivers because of my concerns with the #30 wire breaking. RE: [Elecraft] K3 What mics are proplr using for SSB?
I tried 3 mics with my K3, Goldline G4 wide setting, RE20, and Audio-Technica 3035 which needs a phontom pwr supply. All worked great and received glowing audio reports. All were previously used with a Kenwood ts870 and no wiring changes were made to the mic plug. I use a hand held PTT switch. TX eq settings were the same for all: 50 +3, 100 +7, 200 +3, 400 +4, 800-0, 1.2,2.4,3.2 +7. Mic Gain Comp. G4 15 7 RE20 11 22 3035 612 With ESSB turned on (3.5) reports were better yet. I do not use ESSB very often but very nice to have. My voice I feel is crummy and not very suitable for bradcasting. Currently use the 3035, RE20 is with another rig, G4 is backup. [Elecraft] K3 What mics are proplr using for SSB?
Gene: Looking at your transmit audio equilizer settings. You would accomplish the very same effect if you dropped all of your settings by 3 db. In other words set as follows: 50 @ 0, 100 @ +4, 200 @ 0, 400 @+1, 800 @ -3, 1.2 @ +4, 2.4 @ +4, 3.2 @ +4. I have been using a commercial dynamic hand mic with the UP/DOWN features which I do NOT have to use the transmit audio equilizer at all as the audio sounds best with all settings at zero. This tells me that this mic is a perfect match for my voice for the K3. I get very similar results when I used my Shure 444D dynamic mic where again I do NOT require the use of the transmit equilizer as it sounds best in all settings at zero. However, if I use the optional electret hand mic from Elecraft then I have to play with the transmit audio equilizer to make it sound better but it never sounds as good as either of my dynamic microphones. Just my 2 cents worth from Fern VE7GZ with K3 serial #412. - Original Message - From: Gene W2BXR [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, October 22, 2008 6:44 PM Subject: RE: [Elecraft] K3 What mics are proplr using for SSB? [Elecraft] K2 # 06602: RX alive on 40meters
Have just completed the Assembly II stage. Had only one hickup where I had skipped some components but after those were added it all burst into life. About 6 months ago I got my hands on a TenTec Omni 546-C (new in the box, unused; 28 years in storage) in which all bypass capacitors and electrolytics needed replacing. A total realignment was required too with requirements of frequency counter, oscilloscope, dummy load, current meter (18 A). The K2 has proven to be a lot simpler and easier than that job. Alignment has not given me grief (sofar, touch wood), only slowdown was a bit of a learning curve on how to drive the menus. Very pleased with the kit, looked forward to get it on the air and put it to the test. Hopefully I'll find next week a few days to get a new antenna up (weather permitting) and then I can move on to the Assembly III stage. 73, Marinus -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K2---06602%3A-RX-alive-on-40meters-tp1366867p1366867.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 mobile
Cheap RTVs such as used in bathroom sealant has a vinegar smell and will attack copper. In a small confined space inside a radio that's not good. In an open outdoor environment where the gas can escape it's not such a problem. Dow Corning and others make RTVs with benign contents, but at a considerable increase in cost. Surface mount components have practically no exposed copper and pcb tracks are not exposed, so, I wonder whether the acetic acid attacks the tin coated contacts.
