Re: [Elecraft] K3 DSP, Ergonomics - update.

2009-08-24 Thread Don Rasmussen
My thanks to Wim DeWilder who suggested that I check my values in the AF-LIM
(af limiter) CONFIG. I ran this through the range from 0 to NOR 030 and there
was little to no noticable effect UNTIL the K3 is powered down then powered up.
After doing these things, LIM to NORM 030 and power reset, then everything is
equal AF wise when going from AGC Off, to AGC-S, to AGC-F. This is greatly
preferable to any change at all from one to the other. So - my K3 has improved.
I'd like to have my old DSP board back again to compare how the AF LIM CONFIG
may affect it differently and the new DSP board, but thats all water under the
bridge.

It may be a good idea to make a change to your AF LIM setting by some small
amount then power down. With the new DSP board I wont be running with the AGC
off anyway, so Norm 030 seems to be the way to go for that.

Don...

That is to say that simply making some change in that CONFIG value and doing
power down seems to have affected the firmware

I have a new photo of K3 #272 on the K3 wiki including the finger dimple I got
from www.FingerDimple.com. They are also sold by Elecraft for the K2 - same
product.
Other things I missed from stock K3 were analog S-meter and band stacking
registers as implemented on (example Orion, IC746 IC756). I achieved these
through the "Cool" program I wrote, also available on the K3 wiki.
However the biggest positive I saw as a K3 improvement happened when I paid
Elecraft for a DSP board upgrade last month.
The stock DSP board for both K3 #272 and K3 #2308 would have one AF level when
the AGC was OFF, and a muted level
when AGC was set to AGC-F or AGC-S. That is to say that the stock version
sounded like the receiver had the attenuator turned on anytime I was using the
AGC-S or AGC-F.
I could work around this somewhat by keeping the AGC off, or by setting the
SLOPE and THRESHOLD at their lesser most values in the CONFIG. This produced a
much better result on CW than (example) IC756Pro.
But after I installed the new DSP board, AGC-F and AGC-S provide a satisfactory
AF level, and when AGC is turned OFF, that is when the receiver sounds like I
turned on the receiver RF attenuator. That is to say, the pattern is reversed.
That is 100% more desirable here. Elecraft has suggested that the only
difference in the upgrade DSP boards would be limited to AF frequency response,
that is, more low end frequency available.
But I am hearing these AGC differences.
I'd
like anyone interested to perform this test, and email your results to me
directly.

Watch out for the cheapies with "MegaBass", too. They have a
grotesque hump in their frequency response at around 60 Hz, the old
"Wurlitzer effect", that makes them sound really bad.

If you're looking for closed type phones that cover the entire ear,
I've personally settled on the Extreme Isolation EX-29 phones. They
really do have 29 dB or so of external sound isolation together with
great full-spectrum response. They're designed primarily for
musicians, especially drummers, who need to monitor their own parts
over a surrounding band. These are the only phones at a decent price
I have ever found that let me use transmit monitoring with a boom
microphone with zero feedback problems. I glued a boom microphone
from a defunct Heil BM-10 set to one earcup and ended up with a
really great combination. At around $100 street price, they're a good value.

[Elecraft] K3-to-Yaesu FL-7000 Inter-connection Docs Available at www.n0ss.net

2009-08-24 Thread Tom Hammond
Folks:

Thanks to Joe, W4TV, and Vidi, ZS1EL, I now have a document available on my
web site giving the inter-wiring info for mating the Yaesu FL-7000 HF Amp
to the K3.

If you are interested, go to www.n0ss.net, then select the K3-Specific web
page and drop down a bit. The new document is immediately following the
documentation for mating the Yaesu VL-1000 (Quadra) HF Amp to the K3.

And, if anyone is interested in some very nice, but economical dual-level
paddles, checkout Vidi's (ZS1EL's) links to his VIP Paddles at the bottom
of my General Interest web page.

[Elecraft] Another means of exciting the ionosphere?

2009-08-24 Thread Ken Kopp
These upward-running bolts, first noted by the shuttle and
orbiter crews are also known as "sprites". There is a school
of thought that the ionization of the ionosphere by these
upward-running bolts of lightening may ... at least in part ...
account for the somewhat unexplained sporadic-E propagation.

There also seem to be instances of signals being reflected
by the ionized lightning bolt paths, much like meteor scatter
or aircraft reflections.

Google "Red sprites and blue jets" for additional information.

[Elecraft] Another means of exciting the ionosphere?

2009-08-24 Thread Kevin Rock
http://www.rdmag.com/News/2009/08/Lightning-s-mirror-image,-but-much-bigger/

This article mentions an electrical field effect which can reach into the
ionosphere. Maybe a good thunderstorm is enough to excite the ionosphere, at
least locally. Since the excitation is from below instead of above, the lower
layers would absorb more than the solar excitation processes. An interesting
experiment would be to test propagation along many paths on each band right
after a strong thunderstorm in one's area. If the sun is not offering enough
energy in its current state maybe a good Midwestern thunderstorm could provide
an alternative excitation process we can use to enhance our chances of making
more distant contacts.

[Elecraft] Software Upgrades

2009-08-24 Thread Tom Meier
One of the problems with having a radio that is way smarter than I am is
that things take an inordinate amount of time to accomplish what should be a
simple task. I've just spent three hours downloading the latest beta
software. I freely admit that all of the mistakes were mine: from trying to
use the wrong COM port to discovering that the unzipped files had not been
saved into my "temporary" beta folder. *But* it seems that the whole thing
could have been avoided if someone had a simple bulletproof checklist that
includes things like "Turn on the K3" Does anyone have such an animal?

Re: [Elecraft] Looking for Y-serial cable k2/100 to KAT100 to PC

2009-08-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Lou, Phil,

Do NOT use those to connect between the K2 (or K2/100) and the computer
- the RS-232 voltages applied to pins other than 2 and 3 will damage the K2.

You can use a standard serial cable to connect between the K2 and the
KAT100 - Just do not connect it to the computer. You MUST use the cable
shown in the KAT100 manual to connect to the computer - only pins 2, 3
and 5 should be connected at the computer end, or damage to the K2 or
KAT100 can result.

[Elecraft] VCO hash, stronger medicine needed

2009-08-24 Thread David Lankshear
Before installing the hardware and firmware mod to reduce VCO hash, my worst
in-band problem was from 28.0 to 28.040MHz where hash gave an S4. reading.
There was also a patch of high level hash out of band around 5.0MHz.

After installing the complete mod, hash at the bottom of 28MHz reduced to S2
while hash at 5MHz disappeared. I trawled the entire tuning range of the K3
today in order to log post-mod hash levels. Weak hash was heard in a number of
places but was strongest at the bottom of 28MHz. A check with VCO MD SP1 set
showed no change to 28MHz but hash levels elsewere increased. Overall, the
best results are found when the full VCO hash mod is installed, but 28MHz is a
grave disappointment.

I've moved the TMP coaxials around, checked and re-checked the mod
installation, metered the resistors and checked the diodes. Everything is
screwed down nice and tight, but there's still a problem on 28MHz.

If it should ever come to pass, dear Elecraft people, a dose of stronger
medicine would be most welcome.

I use the ARI-500 with my ALS-600. Should be the same hookup. The K3 band
data output is identical to the Yaesu band data output. The ARI-500
interprets it just fine. If you have an early K3 you do need the TTL
pull-up mod. My ARI-500 manual has the wiring information. Email me at

Mike,

Using the ACC connector will not help a lot - there are no audio signals
there, so the only applicable input at the ACC connector would be PTT
IN. It would seem just as easy to use the PTT RCA jack on the K3
because you would be connecting to the LINE IN and LINE OUT for audio.
The LINE OUT is pre-AF gain, you set the level using CONFIG: LIN OUT in
the menu.

Engineering, and well as TigerTronics, sell all kinds of pre-made cables but
only a mic cable for the K3. I'd rather connect to the ACC, as I do with
the IC-7800, where the audio signal is not dependent on the AF volume or mic

Has anyone used an Ameritron ARI-500 to automatically bandswitch
an Ameritron ALS-500 amplifier with their K3? If so I'd like the details
on how it was accomplished.

Thanks
Tim

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and SignaLink USB Interface

2009-08-24 Thread Greg - AB7R
No need to even use the ACC connection. You only need an audio line to Line
IN,
Line Out and a line for PTT to the PTT RCA connector.

The cables are a snap to make. I cut a piece of CAT 5 cable, verify what
colors go
to what pins INSIDE the SignaLink (you set the jumpers internally) and then
attach
the audio plugs and the RCA for PTT and you should be all set.

Hope this helps.

2009-08-24 Thread Dave G4AON
If the P3 only requires the IF output from the KXV3, then a simple BNC
single hole socket mounted in the KXV3 blanking plate and a length of
RG174 (or similar) to the underside of the board will suffice, see the
KXV3 manual for how it's wired.

The P3 uses the IF out of either the KXV3 or the KXV3A. The KXV3A is
needed for use with internal band modules, such as the 2 meter K144XV.

[Elecraft] Price increases on K3, K2 etc coming - Get those orders in! :-)

2009-08-24 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
Heads up! - We want to give an advance notice to our loyal Elecraft
email list members.

We will be increasing prices a small amount on the K3 and our other
products in early September. If you have been on the fence deciding when
to order, this is your chance. :-) Orders received before the price
increase will be honored at the current web price as of the order date.

We and most other manufacturers have seen industry wide upward pricing
pressure on a number of key components, fabricated parts, delivery costs
etc. over the past 6 months, which is impacting many of our products. In
general we have worked hard to hold off passing through these increases
as long as possible. We're keeping it as small as we can, but finally
have to make some adjustments.

Please don't email or call the factory requesting more details right
now. We are still looking at the total cost impact on each product.
Watch the web order form for the final changes in Sept.

Re: [Elecraft] headphones for k3 / kx1 (Sony MDR-V6)

2009-08-24 Thread Robin Diane Goldstein
i'm an old broadcast-radio/voice-over type and have been relying on
Sony MDR-V6 phones for over 10 years (have 5 pair in my studio)...
you can get a pair for about $75 and when the ear pads wear out, you
can easily replace them. plus they have hinges next to the headband,
so they fold up fairly small.

i love the sound quality and as most every talk host and DJ who wears
them will tell you, they remain comfortable after hours of wear.

just looked, and you can purchase a pair new from amazon for about
$68, including shipping, and sony sells refurbs for about $40 (i've
purchase a refurb set and they were indistinguishable from new)...
i've been using a pair with my K3 for about 2 weeks now and have been
able to pull stuff out of the noise that i couldn't clearly hear
through the built-in speaker.

You can make one that is far better than the original.

See the chapter on "Solving Problems in the Shack." Use that for the
cable that goes to the computer, wire the jumper between radio and
amp as shown in the K2 manual.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 headphones

2009-08-24 Thread John H Gibson
A couple of years ago I decided that I wanted new headphones, so I checked
ratings on eHam and bought a pair that featured a frequency response tailored
for
communications use.

When I tried the new headphones, I found them comfortable to wear, but it soon
became apparent that they exacerbated noisy band conditions; it was like
listening in a rain barrel. I then set the new headphones aside and went back
to a
much older pair with a nominally flat frequency response that I find much
easier
to listen to.
