[Elecraft] "Need Help" PROBLEM SEAMS SOLVED!!!

2009-10-09 Thread TA2AH
Dear All ( Gary, Matt, Alan and others),

Thank you for your kind responses.

Last night, after reading e-mails, I have carefully checked the problem again,
and I saw that, problem was disappeared when I press the top of the front
panel, and it did not repeat until I went to the bed.

I will continue to check it to find out if the problem will repeat or not, also
this whole weekend (Saturday and Sunday). This Saturday I will take it to our
local club for demonstration.

I have a strong feeling that I did a mistake when I connect the front panel for
the first time. I didn't see any problem until today because I didn't open the
radio until the last installations. Anyway, I will remove the front panel and
reinstall it carefully one more time.

Sorry for the band-wide.

It would also be interesting to compare this with the unofficial mods posted
on a Russian site that have been mentioned a couple of times recently.

Personally I am quite happy with the sound of my K3 as it is now with the
latest firmware. But reading about these mods make me wonder whether I am
really missing out on something.

Do you also find the front panel is slow to respond to some button presses?
I think some programs poll the radio far too frequently for information and
they are over-taxing the K3's controller. I think HRD is one of them. Is it
really necessary to request the current frequency ten times a second?

The K3 has an auto-info mode that automatically updates computer software
with all the information needed for logging whenever anything changes. There
is no need for any logging program to poll the K3 at all, unless it is
trying to display every setting of the radio which is what HRD is doing. But
why is that necessary when you have the rig in front of you?

The reason some HRD users do not appear to have this problem *might* be
connected to the baud rate you are using. I would think that using the
fastest possible baud rate would minimize the load on the K3 CPU.

Re: [Elecraft] "Spasmodic" CW with 3.41

2009-10-09 Thread Dick Roth, KA1OZ
This is a very plain vanilla setup. I'm using an iambic paddle plugged
into the paddle input and my straight key into the key input. Other
than my KUSB connection between my rig and my laptop, which runs Vista,
there is no other connection. And with the K3 in TX Test, there is no
RF possibly running around the shack.

I also have a plain vanilla setup of HRD...out of the box, you might
say. I do know that without changing HRD's setup, I can cure the
problem by going back to 3.30. It would appear that something in 3.41
has done the changing!

Thanks for your input, Wayne, Len and the rest of the crew.

 Greetings--

I discovered tonight, having downloaded and installed 3.41 a few nights
ago, that when connected to HRD, my K3, #859, has problems with the
keying circuit, regardless if I'm using my paddle or my straight key.

While in TX Test mode, when connected to HRD, dits and dahs become
"spasmodic" with dahs occasionally elongated or cut off short. The
 dits
will occasionally "miss"...not be there when expected.

When disconnected from HRD, normal operation resumes. Now, I only
 tried
this on TX Test and not into the air or dummy load.

When I reverted back to 3.30, the problem vanished...ceased to exist,
 connected to HRD or not.

 Has anyone else discovered this?

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] "Spasmodic" CW with 3.41

2009-10-09 Thread hb9brj

HRD creates quite some RS232 tfc. You see this when spinning the VFO knob and
watching how fast the HRD screen is following. So I guess that RS232 speed
could be an issue. K3 default is 4800bps. I'm using 38400bps and do not have
any keying problems.

[Elecraft] K3 - erratic keyer behavior serial related

2009-10-09 Thread Nick-WA5BDU
This morning my K3's keyer is behaving erratically - long dashes from
dash paddle, dashes from dot paddle, gaps in strings of continuous
dits. This is my first time transmitting since installing the most
recent firmware a couple days ago. I had HRD connected at the time.
The stuff I've tried -

Backed down from 38k to 19k and eventually 4.8k on the serial port.
That didn't help, but the keyer works OK when the serial interface is
not connected. My serial port is the Elecraft supplied USB to serial
dongle, plugged into a laptop running Vista. I tried going to my XP
computer with real serial port and HRD, communicating at 4800 baud, but
no luck there either. Also tried turning off QSK and turning off VOX.
In case of RF interference, I transmitted at 5 watts into my dummy load
and also went into TX standby mode. The only thing that has worked has
been to have no serial connection. Oh yeah, my speed is 22 WPM. And
the erratic sending also occurred while sending a memory message.

I haven't tried going back to the previous firmware yet. Any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - erratic keyer behavior serial related

2009-10-09 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi Nick,

I still can't duplicate this. Please describe exactly how both the K3
and HRD are set up.

In particular: Do you have a sub receiver, or at least have the aux
DSP module installed? K3 MCU rev 3.41 allows applications to query the
revision number of the aux DSP even if the KRX3 itself is not
installed. If it were doing this repeatedly, there could be serial
port delays.

Thanks,
Wayne

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - erratic keyer behavior serial related

2009-10-09 Thread Stephen Prior
I'm getting a similar thing here. I have no KRX3 and have HRD (latest
version) communicating with the K3 at 38400 baud. If I send a series of
dahs, every so often the dah becomes a dit. If I send a series of dits then
that seems okay.

The paddle is plugged directly into the K3 and there is no other software
trying to talk to the K3 at the same time. The connection between the PC
and the K3 is purely serial, no USB interface is involved. Latest K3
firmware too. I have not noticed this behaviour before. It is independent
of both cw speed and rf output. If I close HRD the problem disappears.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 Rev C DSP with Low Freq Enhancement ship date info; New swap out option on parts order page. CORRECTION

2009-10-09 Thread Craig K3OOL

Is the hardware mod to the DSP board required to see any effect from the f/w
change in
3.41?

That's primarily it. We increased coupling caps and a few other values
in the audio chain to increase low freq audio response below 300 Hz.
when combines with the latest f/w beta release it results in more low
end below 300 Hz.

I'm running HRD 4.1 Build 2312. I should add that the radio is as it

4.1 Build 2312

I'm using a KUSB from Elecraft.

I re-installed 3.41 to see whether there had been a problem with the
first time I installed it, but the same symptoms are there.

I can't even send 8 dits (error) without a skipped dit! It makes it
impossible to send morse. When I try the straight key, it is hit and
miss whether I transmit or not with each character.

I just re-installed 3.30 and all is FB again!

[Elecraft] K3-HRD CW keying issue fixed

2009-10-09 Thread Wayne Burdick
I just sent a new version of K3 firmware to everyone who reported a
problem with HRD and K3 revision 3.41.

Turns out that HRD (Ham Radio Deluxe, a PC software app) polls for sub
receiver status periodically, even if one isn't installed, which can
result in long timeout delays. In the new revision, the status command
is still allowed at any time, but it won't cause timeouts.

If testing of the field-test revision goes well, we'll post it as a
beta release tomorrow morning.

End Snip

Hi Jim

I tried turning NB on/of several times, altered the settings several times and
did not hear any tone etc.

All is good so far with FW 3.41, no sub rcvr either.

Serial number is 679

I don't use HRD either.

I think that what he's describing is an issue with when changing bands, the NR
goes off during the switch over, and all of the noise floor that was being
suppressed comes back up making a loud noise.

[Elecraft] NR and PF1 key noise

2009-10-09 Thread Bob Allen
Here's another bug that now occurs with v 3.41 and I didn't notice this
before updating.
I assigned the programmable function button "PF1" to switch the
configuration menu item "SPKR+PH", now if I have NR on and I try to
switch the external speaker on and off by holding the "PF1" button I get
a tone that is medium low loudness around .7-1 KHZ.
On some NR settings like "1-1 to 2-4" the tone occurs anytime I switch
the speaker on or off and "3-1" and above it only seems to occur when
switching the speaker on.
This doesn't happen when I switch the speaker from the config menu only
when switching using the "PF1" button.
Pushing other buttons makes it stop.
Almost sounds related to the "3.41 incomplete fix" thread.
Not a big deal but needs to be fixed.

No.

The hardware mods improve the *TX* audio path low frequency response from all
three sources (front microphone, rear microphone, line in). They also improve
the Rx low frequency response for *headphones* only. Lined out and speaker
low frequency responses are not affected.
