Re: [Elecraft] P3 wishlist

2009-10-10 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
Hmm - yes a port for a PowerMate, but that would require USB.

I think I'd prefer a Bluetooth interfaces, then a very small B/T mouse
(about £20) would be great and there wouldn't be more cables around
the operating position.

But having not seen or used the P3 yet, I can't say - maybe the built-
in 'knob' will be just fine.

I really wish we could get a full listing of the modifications that
Elecraft is officially rolling into this DSP board revision. It doesn't
even have to come with rework instructions and pictures... Just a list
of value changes would have me pleased as punch.

This should be close but Elecraft has not updated their schematics since
October 2008, so there could be differences:

Lyle and I exchanged notes on this a while back as he and I were
experimenting with DSP Board component changes above and beyond the
much-discussed headphone cap change. My guess is that the Rev. C board
changes take the notes in the link into account. However, he was re-scaling
R values. I had re-scaled C values since fewer components were involved in
solder re-work. The net result is essentially the same but changing R
values likely makes more sense in production where the cost of SMT resistors
is essentially the same irrespective of component value versus the increased
cost of higher-valued capacitors. And as Bill points out, there may be
other subtle differences.

Given the number of changes to the DSP Board, I recommend taking advantage
of Elecraft's swap-out program unless there's a lot of comfort in SMT/SMD
re-work.

[Elecraft] Need more than one serial port?

2009-10-10 Thread Paul
I am working on the BESCOTP award--the Bought Every Single Cable On The Planet
award...

The DB-9 serial port on the back of the K-3 here has a special cable running to
the Steppir antenna controller. Now I need to access the same port from the
computer for another application, mainly my contest logger/keying. I have a
Micro Keyer and my old cable for it was for a Icom Pro II. I have to buy a new
one for the K-3, but it is $85 ! I'd go ahead and do it, but I'm not sure how
to hook all this up!

So, how are you contesters out there doing that? Is there a Y cable made for
DB-9? If so, wouldn't that pin out be different than the one for the SteppIR
and cause problems?

A secondary problem is that the computer only has USB ports, no serial port.
It's an IBM Thinkpad. I believe it has 4 USB 2.0 ports available.

Any info would help!

Thanks,

Paul

You can't connect two cables to one serial port. The SteppIR controller has
two serial ports called Data In and Data Out. You connect Data In to the K3
using a special SteppIR cable. You connect Data Out to the computer using a
standard serial cable, or USB to Serial adapter.

There is also a schematic on the Steppir Yahoo group site
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SteppIR/files/ titled Y-cable.pdf and
stamped by Fluid Motion that indicates that you can indeed Y the serial
hoookup.
Of course, you'll have to wire your own DB-9(s).

It only has a 2 wire connection to the SteppIR controller. This is the
scheme I'm planning on trying when the SteppIR goes back up.

Am I barking up the wrong tower?

Re: [Elecraft] VOX behaviour changed with new firmware?

2009-10-10 Thread Dave G4AON
In more recent firmware there is an option to default the VOX on CW to
OFF. This avoids those embarrassing moments when you turn the rig on and
lean across the bench pressing the paddles and transmit by accident.
Unfortunately, the same is not true if you enable CW in SSB... Even if
VOX is OFF the paddles will let you transmit CW when on SSB.

Check through the firmware release notes for these items. The VOX "OFF"
came with version 3.09 and is changed in CONFIG: CW WGHT by pressing the
"4" key.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 Rev C DSP with Low Freq Enhancement ship date info; New swap out option on parts order page. CORRECTION

2009-10-10 Thread Brett Howard
I have a lot of confidence in SMT rework and I've done the C9 and C13
mod with exact replacement caps. I was told that changing those to
100uF was an official Elecraft mod so I went out and found the exact
size replacement SMT caps and got them on there. They look like they
were installed from the factory. I've got all the equipment to do SMT
rework right down to removal and replacement of BGA components. If I
just had an official list of modifications I'd just do it.

Wonder if the replacement DSP board requires the return of our current
one. My current one has traces cut for the low pass audio filter and
what not...

Re: [Elecraft] VOX behaviour changed with new firmware?

2009-10-10 Thread Greg
Dick,

This has always been the designed behavior. When operating CW and you do
NOT want to assert PTT either manually or by computer then VOX must be ON.
When it is off, you must assert some PTT for RF to pass.

There are other issues with 3.41 and HRD that may be the same problem. I
noticed tonight that the voice keyer is slow to release PTT at the end of a
message. I shut down HRD and the problem went away. Also when tuning the
display randomly stops for a short period then picks up again. Similarly
when HRD is shut down this problem goes away.

I don't have the sub-rx installed.

[Elecraft] use your Elecraft in the world's biggest contest

2009-10-10 Thread DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL
There are just LOTS of K3's out there doing lots of WINNING in
contests around the world. The biggest, CQWWDX cw and ssb and rtty
(RY already done for this year) are great ways to try out your K1, K2,
or K3 and get your feet wet in contesting.

www.cqww.com

The CQWW Contest Committee, courtesy of the Potomac Valley Radio Club,
will be running a webinar intro (of sorts) on contesting, tomorrow at
6pm eastern time. It's free...all you have to do is register. The
CQWW Chair, K3EST (and a K3 owner) will chair the session. K1AR and
KR2Q (also a K3 owner...in fact, owner of a pair of K3s and a K2) will
also be on board. Following the presentation will be an extensive Q+A
session.

Give it a try...all you need to do is register (free).

[Elecraft] K3 Two radios on different bands using ANT1 and ANT2

2009-10-10 Thread Jaroslav Chmelík
I encountered a problem when I tried to use the K3 with Main/Sub receivers on
two different bands.

Configuration:
- K3 with installed second receiver
- Second receiver connected to KAT3 (KRX3 ANT=ATU)
- Set independent VFOs (VFO IND=YES)
- SW versions: MCU 3.14, FPF: 1.00, DSPs: 2.16

Operational condition:
- SUB ON with Linked VFOs (but it behaves equally when independent)
- Main radio (VFO-A) on 20m band and switched to ANT1 connector of KAT3
- SUB radio (VFO-B) on 40m band and switched to ANT2 connector of KAT3
- I am searching two bands in parallel using bigger (A) tuning knob

When I find a station on Main radio (VFO-A 20m band), I can call it immediately
without any problem.
But when there is a station on SUB radio (VFO-B 40m band), then I hit A/B
button, which swaps bands. Now, 40m band is on VFO-A so theoretically I could
call the station (transmit). But, to my surprise it doesn't swap respective
antenna connectors. So, with inappropriate antenna it has high SWR and I can’t
transmit. Naturally, a listening is nearly impossible with inappropriate
antennas.

It seems that although K3 remembers antenna connector settings for each band
(and even ATU settings within bands), this doesn't apply when swapping MAIN/SUB
receivers.

Yes, there is a seemingly easy solution: At first hit the A/B button (swaps
bands), and then ANT button (swaps antennas). But this isn't very handy. One
has to switch both buttons back, when QSO is finished, and it represents
several wasted seconds, that can be very valuable during contest. (these
buttons are on the opposite sides of the front panel)
I think it would be fine, especially during S&P operation in QRP categories in
contests, if K3 (without any additional hardware) could be used in such a semi
(or pseudo?) SO2R set-up.

Is there anything that can solve this problem? Maybe, I am missing something in
the CONFIG MENU. Or, is there any technical (hardware) reason, which excludes
that?

2009-10-10 Thread lyle johnson

The speaker system has its own amplifier and already has excellent low
frequency response.

The headphones have their own amplifier and had 10 uF output caps, now changed
to 100 uF.

Line out also has its own amplifier and output network.

Note that these are the electrical paths. The firmware LF improvement applies
to *all* paths: headphones, speakers and line out.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Two radios on different bands using ANT1 and ANT2

2009-10-10 Thread Bob Tellefsen
Hello Jarda
Here's one idea.
Use your logging program to make the changes.
You could program the A/B change to be followed
by the Ant1/Ant2 change, all at the press of one
button.
Just how you do this will depend on which logging program you are using.
It would be easy in TR Log. I think it can be done in N1MM
but I'd have to ask someone who knows the program better than me
just how to do it.
Good luck and 73

This was last discussed a couple of weeks ago. I think the reason for this
is that the K3 does FSK by generating audio tones in the DSP. These audio
tones must pass through the SSB filter and what you are seeing is the effect
of ripple in the filter passband. Other radios, I guess, generate a FSK
carrier the same way they do for CW and actually frequency shift it.

You could look back in the archives to see if there was any solution - all I
can remember was the suggestion that the 8-pole filter has less ripple.

If it's only a 2 wire connection then the controller can't send anything to
the radio so there is no possibility of any conflict, as long as the K3
serial port can handle two loads on the data line. However the document I
referred to suggested you could just route the serial data through the
controller.

Is there any difference between the official modifications and this one:
http://ur5lam.jimdo.com/elecraft-k3-mod-s-page/ ? I find it a bit difficult
to see exactly what the unofficial mods are as it isn't entirely clear what
components / boards are affected from the photographs. I can't really
justify the cost of replacing the DSP board given that I don't think there
is much wrong with the K3 audio at the moment. But I have a big bag of
assorted electrolytic capacitors sitting in my junk box.

Not at all. Exchange the DB9F ("computer") and DB9M ("radio")
and it will be easier. The SteppIR controller will connect to
the K3 via the long 2-wire connection and the short leg will
be set up as a connection point for a standard serial cable

from a microHAM Interface.

Just remember to set the K3 "AutoInf=On" so the SteppIR gets
the necessary frequency data when a logging program is not

When you go through the schematic and run the response calculations, those
were the only changes necessary to improve low-end response for all Rx and
Tx paths.

Take a look at what's happening before the ADC and after the DAC circuits.
The K3 has some of the best designed audio circuits for a communications
transceiver.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2009-10-10 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
Weather has been dry and cool this week. Autumn is most assuredly here.
Next week looks rainy but for now the sun is out and the temperatures are in
the mid-50s. I went for a walk and was glad I had gloves on this morning. A
good brisk walk in the chilly morning air felt good. I had to stay on the
roads to avoid the hunters but it was good. I got to see many of the trees
changing color across my part of the Coast Range. Vine maple make the
hillsides blaze with their bright red leaves.
Propagation on twenty meters was pretty good this week. Some light QSB but
copy was good. Eighty meters was good the few evenings I checked it. From
those examples I hope tomorrow's nets will be pretty good. No sunspots but
there has been some solar wind. With our magnetosphere in its present position
it does not take much solar activity to awaken the ionosphere. The solar wind
seems to slip into the normally blocking field and ions start to circulate.
Now to catch some of those ions before they sneak away.

Please join us tomorrow evening.

You can't connect two cables to one serial port. The SteppIR
controller has two serial ports called Data In and Data Out. You
connect Data In to the K3 using a special SteppIR cable.

The K3 directly generates FSK tones in a phase-coherent manner at the 15 kHz
IF. The output is then up-converted to 8.215 MHz, passes through the crystal
roofing filter, then converted to the final RF output frequency. No audio
involved.

The "sidetone" audio for MON use is separately generated.

I use this program:

http://www.eterlogic.com/Products.VSPE.html

It's a virtual port/splitter that allows you to create additional ports and
use one cable to run multiple applications. Works well for me so far.

[Elecraft] NR problem with the latest beta release

2009-10-10 Thread Jim Chick
Hi Steve

In my previous e-mail I suggested it was the NB! not so it was in fact NR
and the symtoms are exactly as you describe, reverting to the prevous beta
release solves the problem. I am interested to know if we are the only
people experiencing this or is it a general problem?

Jim G4NWJ

I get a continuous tone when engaging NR, but it requires switch tones set
to on and my FL1 filter to be engaged. Wayne has tried to help me find the
cause without success yet.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 Rev C DSP with Low Freq Enhancement shipdateinfo; New swap out option on parts order page. CORRECTION

2009-10-10 Thread Steve Ellington
Paul
This is so confusing. First, a hardware change (2 caps) improves bass then
along comes a firmware change that does the same thing but only for
headphones and line out and then a new DSP board that works with the
firmware to do the same thing but still only for headphones and line out and
now we're back to the 2 caps that improve headphone, line and speaker audio.
No wonder there are so many questions. I wish someone would make this more
clear.

Jim:

I can get rid of the tone upon turning on NR if I do any of the following:

revert to v3.30
turn off switch tones
use my FL2 filter (500 Hz) rather than my FL1 filter (2.7 kHz)
and, of course, turning off NR

Wayne had me try an EE init, which got rid of the tone, but it returned
after a while. It seems to require a very specific filter or hardware
setup, a specfic set of config options, and possibly some time pushing
buttons.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one with this problem, because that
means it is not a hardware problem with my K3, and I'm not going crazy!

I have faith that Wayne and Lyle will solve this, though.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 Rev C DSP with Low Freq Enhancement shipdateinfo; New swap out option on parts order page. CORRECTION

2009-10-10 Thread Don Wilhelm
Steve,

Hopefully I can make it more clear.

The speaker and line out audio *already* had sufficient low response
with no changes. The headphone output had limitations unless higher
impedance headphones were used. The capacitor changes allowed lower
frequency response with lower impedance headphones.

As for the firmware, previously, the bass response was limited in the
firmware. That limitation has now been relaxed and greater low
frequency content can be heard in the speaker (assuming you have a
speaker that can produce those lows, the internal speaker is not that
speaker), or at line out. If you are using low impedance headphones,
you will need to increase the capacitors to hear the difference in the
headphone output.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 Rev C DSP with Low Freq Enhancement

2009-10-10 Thread lyle johnson
Let me try and eliminate the confusion.

1) The low frequency response is constrained by two things: the audio path
components, and the various filters (roofing filter, DSP IF filter and DSP
audio filter (including Rx Equalizer).

2) Several months ago, there were circuit component changes made to the DSP
board to improve Tx and Rx low frequency response. The Rx path that was
changed was the headphone path -- 10 yF output capacitors were changed to 100
uF capacitors. There was no need to change components in the speaker or Line
Out circuitry.

3) At the time these capacitors were changed, *other* component changes were
made to improve the *transmit* audio low frequency response. Several
components were changed to improve this response for the front panel
microphone, rear panel microphone, and line input paths.

4) With these changes, the receive low frequency response was now limited by
the various filters (roofing filter, DSP IF filter and DSP audio filter).

5) The firmware in the K3 sets up the filters for maximum "communications"
effectiveness, making the nominal low frequency roll-off around 200 Hz.

6) The latest beta test firmware *allows* you to move the combined *filter*
response lower, improving low frequency fidelity if you so desire. This will
affect all the possible receive paths: speaker, headphones and line out.

[Elecraft] auto-disconnect antenna relays? (KAT100 related)

2009-10-10 Thread Chris Kantarjiev
I've just replaced the 1N5711 SWR diodes in my KAT100 for the Nth time. It's
annoying, but I guess
it's not annoying enough to cause me to disconnect my antennas every time I
turn off the radio!

Here in "northern" California, we don't have many thunderstorms, but apparently
we get enough wind
static to damage these diodes once every year or so. I really wish there was an
idiot-proof way to
disconnect the antennas without any intervention on my part!

A small box that was powered from my 12v distribution panel and has two
suitable relays in it would
be welcome. I guess I could make it myself, but I wonder if anyone else has
already done so, in a
way that integrates cleanly to the KAT100 outputs? I wouldn't want them in the
KAT2, since I operate
from battery at times. But when I'm running the KAT100, I am using more power
than I have battery ...

(Does the K3 have such relays in the output circuitry?)

Lyle,

As I recall, the *other* changes affect both line-in and mic-in. On the
N1EU website, I've documented those changes with only C value changes
instead of R value changes.

I think what some folks are requesting is an updated schematic, showing the
new values. But what they may not realize is that 7 SMT capacitors are
changed -- or in the alternative, the corresponding SMT resistors require
solder re-work and that's in addition to the C9/C13 change and so the total
parts change may be in excess of 10. That's a lot of propensity for damage
to the board and it really makes sense to just opt for the board swap
through Elecraft.

[Elecraft] K3: Upgrade DSP? I didn't...

2009-10-10 Thread Wayne Burdick
Most K3 users will not notice, nor benefit from, a lower AF cutoff in
DSP hardware. Our most recent firmware already lowers the response
somewhat. Those lacking spectacular hearing and an application for
ultralow bass can forego the upgrade.

I have an original DSP in my K3, and I find its bass quite
satisfactory even for ESSB and for listening to music broadcasts.

OTOH, I prefer rock and blues. Maybe if I were listening to classical
I'd need those big electrolytics :)

Chris,

how about a 1Meg OHM resistor between the center of the coax connector
and ground. That should bleed off the static, but not mess with the
impedance.

Re: [Elecraft] auto-disconnect antenna relays? (KAT100 related)

2009-10-10 Thread David Gilbert

Even better would be a surge protector with a shunt inductor designed
for pretty much that exact task. I have no connection with I.C.E. but
$40 seems a reasonable enough price.

http://www.iceradioproducts.com/impulse1.html#1

Static accumulation from overhead clouds can be huge even without a
lightning strike. I generally short the shack end of all my coax runs
when a storm approaches, but one day a couple of years ago I was slow
doing so and when I reached for the coax I got zapped with a bright blue
2 inch long arc to my left hand (my right hand was touching the concrete
floor). Both biceps were sore for three days afterward.

I'm not sure I'd want to trust one megohm to draw off the static charge
quickly enough to keep the voltage from creeping high enough to damage
the rig. I've seen arcs jump across the end of an unterminated PL-259
literally every five seconds. Give me the DC short any day.

[Elecraft] K3 Beta Firmware Rev. 3.42: Works correctly with HRD

2009-10-10 Thread Wayne Burdick
K3 beta-test firmware revision 3.42 (with DSP rev. 2.37) is now
available. It corrects a problem with CW keying (and possibly transmit
in general) when using HRD (Ham Radio Deluxe) software. See release
notes below.

Please send any problem reports to k3supp...@elecraft.com. Beta
firmware load instructions can be found at

* * *

MCU 3.42 / DSP 2.37, 10-10-2009

* POLLING PROBLEM WITH HRD FIXED: With no sub receiver
installed, applications such as HRD (Ham Radio Deluxe)
were still able to continuously poll for the aux DSP
revision number, causing timeouts that could disrupt transmit.

* SQUELCH CAN BE SET FULLY CLOCKWISE: In some cases
rotating the squelch pot fully clockwise would open the squelch.
Full clockwise now closes squelch.
