Re: [Elecraft] K2: Problem Setting AGC Threshold
Doug, First be certain you have the correct pin on U2 - it is the uppermost pin of U2 and nearest the right side panel. If you remove the screws from the control board and tilt it slightly forward, you can easily probe that pin from the back side of the board. Then check to be certain U2 is oriented correctly. If those checks are both OK, go on. Next remove the control board from the K2 and measure the resistance from U2 pin 5 to ground as you rotate R1 It should range from 55k to 5k (a bit lower is likely OK). With the control board still out, check the resistance to ground from RF Board J6 pin 6 while rotating the RF Gain control. It should range from zero to 5k. If those checks are good, look at the soldering of CB RP6 - check carefully for unsoldered pins and look for a solder bridge between pins 3 and 4. If that does not cure it, then look at the schematic for the control board (lower left) and you should see that the U2 pin 5 voltage is controlled by a simple 3 legged voltage divider. The voltage (8 volts) comes in at RP6 pin 3 and then goes to R11 in series with the resistor in RP6 pins 7 and 8, and also goes to the RF Gain control through the series resistor in RP6 pins 5 and 6. One resistor RP6 pins 3 and 4 between the 8 volt supply and U2 pin 6 - so it is a relatively simple voltage divider. (U6 does not supply any current, so its function is not relevant to determining the voltage). 73, Don W3FPR Doug Person wrote: Hi Folks, I'm very leisurely building K2 6798. [Elecraft] W3FPR Fixed AF Output PC Boards... last one(s) available
Folks: I'll try to keep this short (but I've NEVER been able to do that before, dunno why I think I can do it now)... I while back, I wrote that I had a limited supply of the W3FPR Fixed Level AF Output PC Board (for the K2) available and that when they were gone, there'd be no more available. Of course, I received a slug of orders, which decimated the supply..! One of my customers ordered two (2) boards which I duly mailed off to him. They were never delivered. (FIRST TIME I've actually had a non-delivery, out of several HUNDRED previous shipments). So I sent him the LAST TWO PC boards in stock (I'd held them back as 'backups' in case his first shipment didn't arrive. Imagine my amazement when he called to say that the second shipment FILED to arrive as well! I'd asked him to exercise (even more) patience, and to give another 7-10 days for the package to be delivered. Though neither the first nor second envelopes were delivered to their destination, they did (finally) come BACK TO ME... marked, NO SUCH ADDRESS - CANNOT DELIVER..! Turns out the purchaser made a typo when he sent his mailing address to me, reversing two digits in the street address. Sooo... I've now sent two PCBs to him (at the correct address) and I have two PC boards remaining. BOTH of the remaining PC boards are potentially COMMITTED to folks who I had to (initially) turn down for orders. I have sent an 'availability' note to one of those folks, BUT I've managed to lose the name/address of the last remaining potential purchaser. Owing to the honesty of hams, I'm now asking that IF you were the person I had to turn down on the purchase, PLEASE CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY at N0SS.NET... I have your PC board waiting to go out to you. If it turns out the one or both of those potential purchasers no longer want the PC boards, I'll announce that they are again available. [Elecraft] RX Noise with no antenna connected
Hi: I've been noticing s2-s3 receiver noise on my K3 (SN:2195) with the antenna's disconnected. I have read the posts about the very sensitive receiver and properly calibrated S-meter, but this noise remains at the same level even with the attenuator engaged. I have tightened all screws, checked other possible noise sources (I have the rig plugged into a non-switching supply that is itself plugged into an ICE line filter) and still no reduction in noise. I thought at first this might be an S-Meter calibration issue, but not responding to attenuation strikes me as counter to that. I don't have access to a signal generator, so cannot do much further right now. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? The rig is working very well otherwise. 73, Bob Harvey K2PI -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/RX-Noise-with-no-antenna-connected-tp3817443p3817443.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] RX Noise with no antenna connected
Hi Bob, I have a spare XG1 I can send you if you want to do gain calibration, but don't have any other means of getting an S9 and S1 signal source. This is almost certainly a simple calibration issue. You should start by running K3 Utility's RF GAIN Cal routine, selecting factory defaults, which doesn't require a signal generator. You can follow this with tweaking of CONFIG:SMTR OF and SMTR SC until a no-signal condition gives you no bars. 73, Wayne N6KR On Oct 13, 2009, at 10:11 AM, Bob Harvey - K2PI wrote: Hi: I've been noticing s2-s3 receiver noise on my K3 (SN:2195) with the antenna's disconnected. But I have not tested it. So your email triggered a curiosity to check it. Since the test gear is in the basement and the K3 is here in the shack, I thought of connecting my FT817 and listening to the IF output. The IF center frequency is 8.215 MHz more or less and so you can listen above the IF and below the IF to what stations are transmitting. The FT817 was chosen because it is highly portable and tunes to 8.215 MHz easily. You could do an A/B test on signal level. There were a lot of signals on 20m and so I had a lot to hear. If you put the K3 on say 14.350 MHz, for example, then a signal at 14.325 MHz is going to be 25 KHz above the 8.215 MHz IF or 8.240 MHz out of the IF output. This is because the IF signal is inverted and goes up in frequency as you go down, in this case down from14.350 MHz. The signals are going to be LSB for the same reason. You could tune for WWV at 10 MHz to have a stable signal for the before/after test. By the way, this is an odd and awkward way to add a sub receiver to the K3. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Rev C DSP with Low Freq Enhancement
I believe the add-on LPF module for the DSP board will be available soon. We'll post details at that time. It's easy to install. The rolloff of this module is 4.5 kHz, and it completely eliminates all high-frequency artifacts resulting from the CODEC's 12-kHz sample rate. I can't hear the artifacts, which are typically 60 dB down from even weak audio signals, but some operators with better ears apparently can. 73, Wayne N6KR On Oct 13, 2009, at 12:37 AM, Eric Tichansky wrote: Paul Christensen wrote: Take a look at what's happening before the ADC and after the DAC circuits. Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 Overload Protection on 160M
Hi Tony, You'll get somewhat better isolation using the BNC jack for the sub receiver's aux antenna, rather than the non-transmit KAT3 antenna. Either way, the trip point of the KRX3's carrier-operated relay is typically 1 to 2 watts. To play it safe let's say you want to keep it down to 0.5 W. That's 30 dB down from 500 W. One of our staff engineers, Bob Friess (N6CM) did the math: If the antenna were a point source, in free space, and 100% efficient, a separation of about 80 meters would be required. In the real world you'd probably need less than this. If 80 meters of separation isn't possible, you could use a PIN diode attenuator controlled by the KEY OUT line to remove RF from the sub's aux antenna input during TX. 73, Wayne N6KR On Oct 12, 2009, at 9:57 PM, Tony Fegan VE3QF wrote: An antenna system for 160M with separate 2M diameter shielded receiving loop is to be set up at a temporary location. How much isolation (distance) is required between the main transmitting antenna and the receiving loop? Is there any isolation difference between wiring the sub receiver for BNC or via the KAT3? Re: [Elecraft] Two K2 ?s
George, I certainly have no clue about your XV series question. But for the KAT100 -- I don't recall the manual saying anything about future additions to the KAT100. There are 2 models of the KAT100 the -1 and the -2. The -2 has connectors that fit into the locations that are vacant on the -1 model. That should be a 10 pin header and 2 large 2 pin connectors. Those are for connecting to the KPA100 when the KAT100 and KPA100 are mounted in the same EC2 enclosure. Yes, there is one vacant DIP socket, but it has no intended purpose - it is 'just there'. 73, Don W3FPR George Blahun Jr wrote: Are there any plans to offer additional transverters in the XV line? Don, N0YE .I see about the the same on my new K3 that had the mod factory installed. I had expected to be able to look at IF noise with my oscilloscope like I do on my FT-101E but the level is too low and there's some pickup of other signals away from the IF so you need some gain and some selectivity ahead of the scope. I suppose I'll get an 8 MHz crystal for the 101 because I'm really curious about how well the K3 noise blanker works on different noises that I'm used to seeing on the 101. I did a bit of blanker experimenting last night and sent this note to a friend W5JAW, who is very experienced in blanker design, as I am. I'm accustomed to looking at the IF noise on my FT-101E with an oscilloscope but the IF out level on the K3 is at such a low level that it's hard to see if you don't have big signals. I've seen a few such big signals but only with the blankers off. There one that even my FT-101E can handle at any gain level, a series of five pulses that may be a control signal sent over the AC lines every few minutes, that I don't see on either radio if the blankers are on. The FT-101 can handle other noises but some are really level sensitive and it doesn't have an external control except for the 20 dB attenuator and my trusty alignment tool. I just did a check on 30 meters which is usually my worst band for noise; tonight so far, the noise is not too bad. To test, I set the K3 in AM and looked at the audio out spectrum on a spectrum analyzer. With the blanker off, I see a harmonic series of 120 Hz. On the oscilloscope, I don't see any sharp spikes so I suspect this noise may be generated by neighborhood TV sets. If my neighbor who moved to Boston six weeks ago were still here, I'd have a severe example for testing but he and his nasty tv set are gone. With the dsp blanking, at the extreme end of the IF WIDE range, I can lower the higher order harmonics, 4th order and higher. If I add the IF DSP at the more extreme end of it's ranges, E3-7, the 120 Hz harmonic series completely disappears. I haven't tried this with any big signals in the ham bands; apparently my neighbors who are phone men are too discouraged by the lousy conditions. The only big signals that I've heard are on AM broadcast. If I add the Noise Reduction, the interference really goes away. With the limited or no gain ahead of the k3 blanker, the IF blanker may need fairly large pulses to trigger blanking. or not. 73, Dunc, W5DC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] the ultimate rig..
Bill, How about just turning the power control on the K2 down to 40 watts and measure the key-down current draw. I have not checked, but I believe it should be in the vicinity of 10 amps. In any case, whatever the current draw, think about the duty cycle - a 50% duty cycle (a continuous string of dots) is very high for ham radio (you do spend some time listening), so even if the peak current draw is close to 20 amps, your average current draw will be less than 10 amps. Maybe I missed something, but I think you already have a transceiver that qualifies to your requirements. 73, Don W3FPR VA3OL wrote: I have a K2/100, with the ATU. It is almost the perfect radio... I can supply BW artwork at either 1X or 2X (or some other magnification if you prefer), and at 300 or 600 DPI resolution. I usually send these out as PDFs which can be printed directly onto either plain white paper or onto clear acetate (for directly making a negative if you do your own contact exposure of the negative to home-etched pre-sensitized PC board). I'd need to know whether you want a photo positive (black where copper is to remain), or negative (white/clear where copper is to remain). The process (KPR-4) which I use required a photo-negative image, but many others use a photo-positive working resist. Fred - Yes to all. Check out the N1MM manual on macros. There's a command that will allow you to execute a CAT command in the macro...its something like CAT1ASC to send the command in ascii format. Then look at the K3 programmer's reference guide available for download on the elecraft website. Look toward the end of the manual where it talks about Switch commands. There's a table that shows the correct codes. I think the correct macro to send M1 would be something like {CAT1ASC K31;SWT21;}. This is from memory so please verify with the references mentioned. - 73, Greg - AB7R Whidbey Island WA NA-065 On Tue Oct 13 14:27 , Fred Jensen sent: I'm having a hard time making sense out of all this and a couple of the questions involve non-Elecraft products, so I turn to the Fountain of Elecraft and Elecraft-Related Knowledge: 1. With 15 watts to a 40 meter loop with apex at 30', our first QSO was a 5N (Nigeria). That's on 40 meters at 4 PM local time! And our antennas are going to be much, much better. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] has the k2 a future?
G'day, I understand from a previous post that memory is maxed out. Also that a possible pin compatible micro with more memory is a possibility. I have offered the idea that pruning the rather generous CW memories might offer up enough memory with the existing micro for the update you mention. A functionality which has been requested for years now. Wayne, any hope of firmware updates for the K2? My favorite would be keeping mode and ATU setting per VFO. I'd be willing to purchase a more expensive microprocessor IC if more memory is required, as I suspect it is. 73, Randy, KS4L - Original Message - From: Wayne Burdick n...@elecraft.com To: Michael van Hauten vanhau...@t-online.de Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, October 13, 2009 2:10:21 PM GMT -06:00 US/Canada Central Subject: Re: [Elecraft] has the k2 a future? Re: [Elecraft] K3: RIT Knob Coarse Tuning doesn't Lock
Somehow all the text disappeared from my previous post. If VFO A is LOCKed, turning the RIT knob will still QSY VFO A when the CONFIG: VFO OFS is set to ON. This is real bad and can't possibly be designed behavior. Am I missing a setup that will make sure the VFO stays locked even if the RIT knob is bumped? 73... Re: [Elecraft] the ultimate rig..
If he were to peel one turn off the output transformer, from 4 turns to 3, it should be just about right. Hello Wayne, Yes, K2 is still my favourite field day and QRP rig and no others can bit it. I now have 3 x 3.7v 3300mAH Li-Po cells in the KBT2 and they work very well. Re: [Elecraft] has the k2 a future?
