Re: [Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 install
I've sent a bunch of replies and they all went to the individuals instead of going to the reflector. Sorry about that folks. Yes, the power cycle did fix part of my problem. I could then see the SUB come on. I also encountered an ERR PL2 error code. I had to go in and re-calibrate the VCO for the sub receiver. I had somehow messed that up. Whenever I pressed the ATU TUNE button I would get an ERR TXF error. Looked that up and figured out that I was transmitting on the wrong bandwidth for CW. There is an awful lot to do when setting up 10 filters for the K3 and the SUB receiver. I finally got it all correct I think, but I still had no audio for the SUB receiver. After reading the instructions I realized that I had to set the number of speakers to ONE, and then I had audio as well as receive signal from the SUB receiver. I need to get some stereo speakers. I have more reading to do. We used to send our techs out for a 6x9 hole saw when I was an audio EE a few years back... Either that or speaker lube. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for January 10th & 11th, 2010
Good Evening, The nets went quite well tonight. I used the attenuator on both twenty and forty meters to good effect. Much less fatiguing than hearing the hiss at the levels I need to run. However there are a few California stations who could use a dummy load on 40 meters and still make me jump. Dale? Fred? Hint? If my S meter had a needle it would be wrapped around the pin! On another note: I keep getting emails thanking me for running these nets. To you all: you are very welcome! However, I do this because it is so much fun :) It is great to meet and work such a fine bunch of folks. Plus you actually put up with me :) I also get emails thanking me for my announcements and reports. I find writing them to be fun also. It is nice to share my daily life in the forest. Many of you live in cities and do not have elk wandering through your front yard. How many of you have seen a mountain beaver trimming the alder while on the air? (Yes, they are real beasties: Aplodontia rufa not Castor canadensis.) They live nowhere near water. They are fine neighbors as long as they stay away from the house. The love to dig and can easily undermine my footings. If they dig too closely they find my Conibears! I don't think I have them all yet but I do know some of them were only on your bench for repair and adjustments. If anyone wants to get an accurate signal report please call during the nets. Both Tom and I try to give valid RST. In a perfect world I would write all of those I send and receive and list them in these reports. Then we could get a snapshot of propagation so others can figure out who can hit whom. If you stick around to the end of the nets you hear me letting the nets go free. I do not close them but rather go QNF at the end. If you want please contact others who have worked on the net so you can get a new state or simply meet some nice folks. Once I let the net go free you can do with it as you will (play nice!) Please use the opportunity to contact like minded folks. Weather reports were mild out in Colorado, California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. On the other side of the continent life was very different. Even poor Steve in Georgia was having unseasonably cold weather. Ken mentioned 15 ABOVE zero in Fargo, North Dakota so it is getting warmer :) Those of you who have never experience a month of below zero weather do not realize how very warm 15 ABOVE zero can feel :) In Wisconsin we used to pray for snow because that required the temperature to go UP. However, it can snow at very low temperatures; the flakes fall out of a clear, sunny sky. Very large flakes can fall when the moist Gulf air flows northward through 30, 40, or even 50 below zero temperatures. Half an inch of fluffy flakes made the ski trails much nicer. But at those temperatures my moustache would freeze to my scarf. Ouch! I sure hope the winter temperatures will flow back north again to where people know how to handle them. Down south houses and people are just not ready. On that note: until next week please stay warm and healthy, 73, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] K3 New DSP board installed
Guy, In support of what you are communicating, I have been purchasing refurbished (and off-lease) IBM computers for some time now. They are always quite reliable and last me longer than other new computers that I have purchased in the past. The refurbished K3 DSP boards carry the full 1 year Elecraft warranty, so they are "good as new", and since most of the early life failures have already occurred, they can actually be "better than new". 73, Don W3FPR Guy Olinger K2AV wrote: > In the industry at large, refurbished boards tend to have a > significantly lower failure rate than new boards. [Elecraft] Thank you Elecraft for the KX1
I just wanted to share my experience with a KX1 that I borrowed from a friend. I took this KX1 rig with me when I went to the Philippines. I did a bit of traveling around the northern part of the country. The rig that I borrowed had 80/40/30 and 20 meters available. However, things were more active on 40 meters. Most of my work was from 6am till about 10AM then again from about 9PM till about 11:30PM local time. After that the bands were DEAD. Im speculating that there are more younger CW guys in Asia than here in the states. And that perhaps they go to work, and that's why the bands were not active during the day time. I found that with a #26awg 28' wire thrown up into a coconut tree, and 3 counterpoise available to me, 33', 23' and 16', which I just threw down on the ground I was able to get a very nice match on all bands but 80 meters. At times I found that using only the 33' or the 23' counterpoise was all that I needed... Here's what I was able to work and hear with that little 2 watt ultra portable KX1: Heard: Argentina England Germany France Russia Korea China Japan Chek Republic Israel Norway Switzerland Trinidad Tabgo Thailand Brunei Vietnam Cambodia Philippines Chagos (VQ9) Singapore USA (oddly I was only able to hear AZ for the most part??) Worked: Russia (3 stations) Korea China Trinidad Tabgo (heard me calling QRP but wasn't able to hear me through the other Asian stations calling him) Japan Chek Republic (2 stations) North Pole (1 station) Thailand Brunei (2 stations) Vietnam Cambodia (2 stations) Philippines Believe it or not, I only heard 2 other Philippine stations on CW! I worked both, yet one was a guy visiting from Germany *Places that I didn't mark with a number I worked more than 3 times. As an owner of a K3, I just wanted to say Thank you to Wayne, Eric, Lyle and everyone else at Elecraft that made the KX1 available. You have no idea how much fun and excitement that you added to my already enjoyable vacation. I know now that I'll be ordering a KX1 kit to build for myself as soon as I can drum up the money. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and SPE Expert AMP
Richard, If you go to Yahoo groups, there a group for the Elecraft K3 and one for the Expert Amp. I believe in both of them in the files section there is a drawing for configuring the cabling for the K3 the Expert Amp and your computer. From what I see in the K3's manual and the Expert Amp manual it looks pretty good. I am in the process of obtaining the parts to build one now. Hope this helps. 73, Len K3LJ Richard Thorpe wrote: > > Is anyone using the K3 with the SPE Expert amplifier? if so how do > they integrate the two with computer control? > > R Thorpe AC9D > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > > -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-and-SPE-Expert-AMP-tp4281796p4283184.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Test Results
I've received 25 votes so far and the rate of new reports has dropped to zero. So here are the results. There were 8 correct votes (including 2 split votes that I counted as 1/2 a vote each). That is pretty good... I'm not sure I could have identified the K3 myself. It is slightly better than the 25% we would have expected from random guesses. Receiver #1 was a Ten Tec Omni VI and received 8 votes as the K3. Some of the comments I got were: a. "Very sharp filter." b. "Least fatiguing." c. "Seems to have some kind of faint signal in the noise." d. "Not too bad, although I can hear some high frequency blow-by." e. "A bit of high freq hiss." Receiver #2 was an Elecraft KX1. It received 3 votes. Comments included: a. "Sounded most like my K3 on 160 meters." b. "Close to a K3." c. "Definitely don't like this one." d. "Pretty awful." Receiver #3 was the K3, receiving 8 votes. I will discuss this one and its comments later. Receiver #4 was an Elecraft K2 and it got 4 votes. Comments included: a. "Easiest and cleanest to listen to." b. "Least noisy." c. "Easiest to listen to." d. "Probably a member of the FT1000MP family." e. "Pretty awful, presenting a LOT of high frequency blow-by." f. "Lots of out-of-band noise. (But actually kind of soothing)" g. "More "honest" in reproducing what is really happening on the band." There were 2 votes for "I don't know." None of this is really surprising for a subjective (and difficult) test like this. What was surprising, and which I did not expect, was that of the 8 votes for the K3 and in comments from the others, *not a single person identified it because of noise, artifacts, or distortion*, but in every case by what I would call "normal" factors. Just read these sample pro and con comments about Receiver #3, the K3, (including a few from the first run of the test on 6 January that are pertinent): a. "I had my K3 set up as you described while listening to your 4 recordings. Mine sounded identical to number 3. The other waveforms were different in average pitch." b. "Well balanced leaned toward allowing lows." c. "No out of band noise. Very very faint signals audible." d. "Sounds the most like my K3 sounds with 500 Hz BW." e. "Most different sound to my K3." f. "Cleanest overall passband (the others obviously have substantial wideband gain *after* the CW filter, resulting in surrounding WB noise) - but K3 has most "bumpy-road" agc." g. "[The K3] is the most 'quiet' recording because it contains only low frequency (in-passband) content." h. "Real quiet outside of the passband noise." Without exception, the identifying features cited were purely normal things like frequency response, passband shape, AGC, etc. In fact, many folks identified the K3 precisely because of its cleanliness. "No noise," "Clean," etc. (Incidentally, in the first test on 6 Jan 8 out of 15 were correct votes for the K3 (which was file #1). And the same total absence of identification by distortion products was true for that test also.) I would have expected at least a few folks to say, "Receiver X is the K3 because I can clearly hear the high frequency products." But they did not. Note also that at least four and possibly five of the correct votes were made with their own K3 turned on, in a side-by-side comparison with my recordings, which I'm sure definitely helped. :^) Could they have made the same identification without that to fall back on? I don't know. What are we to conclude from all of this? It is the normal characteristics, rather than the imperfections, that one hears when one listens to a K3. Second, the K3 is apparently no more noisier a receiver; at least noisiness is not what jumps out at you when you listen to it in side-by-side comparisons with other receivers. I now suspect that for many (if not all) operators, the effect of 10 and 12 kHz artifacts etc. is vastly exaggerated. I will speculate further and say that a lot of times because we can measure something, we conclude that what we measured is significant, or that it must be the cause of what's wrong. If there were no such thing as spectrum analyzers perhaps most people would be supremely happy with the way their K3 sounds. But, because we can see something on a plot, we make a connection between it and some other experience. It's like taking a blood test and finding out you have high cholesterol and then declaring, "So that's why I have been having trouble sleeping!" There may, in fact, be no connection. That Elecraft now has a fix for this is incredible. Most manufacturers would have told us to get lost if we had raised the question (if they had responded at all). When you think about it, it really is amazing what has happened here in a matter of just a few weeks. There will be the folks that install the new LPF and declare that there is a night-and-day improvement, that it makes an unusable receiver usable again. When that happens, someone else can make two reco

[Elecraft] K3: Loose Screw...
I received my new K3 this last Monday, put it together, and yesterday I installed the 100 watt PA. I was putting the bottom covers back on and as I was screwing one screw into the little standoff post in the center of the bottom, the screw would not tighten. So, I took the bottom plate off to discover that the little standoff had come loose from the screw that came in through the RF board from topside. So, I knew I had a loose screw and I had already put the top back on. Well, I took the top off and looked and looked and looked. I could not find that little screw and the lock washer. I did not want to power this thing up until I found that screw. I guessed it might have rolled got caught under one of the filters there in the center of the RF board. I took one out, no screw there. I was about to take another filter out when I glanced to the right as I sat there thinking and looked at the top lid with the speaker sitting there attached to the lid. Well, what do you know. There was my missing screw, magnetically attached to the speaker. Now, where was that lock washer. Sure enough, it was also there but hidden a little bit but I found it and got it out. Everything back to normal now. I am writing this just in case this happens to anyone else -- look at the speaker magnet first. 73, phil, K7PEH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3: Erratic Power on 160 and 80
I just discovered this problem while running some unrelated tests. I have erratic power and SWR on a narrow band of frequencies on both 160 and 80. By erratic I mean the power fluctuates wildly + and - from the requested power. The SWR indication also changes and sometimes changes to "-.-". The frequency ranges where this occurs are 1.800 - 1.806 and 3.586 - 3.625. At all other frequencies on 160 and 80 (and all other bands AFAICT) the power is completely stable at the requested level. This occurs at all power levels from 0.1 watts to 100 watts into a well matched dummy load as well as an antenna. I reran the TX Gain calibration with no effect. I then ran the Synthesizer calibration which appeared to fix the problem on 80M but not 160M. I then reran Synth cal with the TOL=MAN parameter set which reintroduced the problem on a very small range of 80M frequencies but with no improvement on 160M. Finally I ran the normal Synth cal again which seems to have resolved the problem on both 160 and 80. Can anyone explain what is happening here, and why the Synth calibration seems to be so sensitive in this regard? Appreciate any insight anyone has. Thanks! [Elecraft] K3 on the air time
Mine is on every morning at grayline & evening thru bedtime. I am no tech & I don't have more than a very basic idea how things inside work. I care what it can do for my DXing. Currently I'm focused on 160m.Just 500w & a dipole @50'. A long way from a big gun.I consider the K3 an equilizer. Last evening TG9NX was on 160m CW. Very weak. I listened for an hour & called too. No contact tho'. However there were a lot of 'big gun' stn.s calling him. Some wrkd him some didn't. I bet they weren't using a K3. I heard him reply to EVERYONE. Some of the big boys were called back but they couldn't hear him. He would call them two or three times before they heard him reply. A couple of them never heard him reply.Alligatorsall XMIT no ears. You can't work em' if you can't hear them. In my 50 yr.s of hamming it's the best receiver I've ever used. As to size. It's a tiny bit smaller than my old IC 746. I see no difference playing with the controls. In my youth I easily 'palmed' a basketball so I don't have small hands. I'm a lefty but that's a whole another placement issue. I read the techno stuff on the reflector & try to learn. As long as the K3 comes on & I can start tuning AND hear DX is all I care about. Everything in this hobby is subjective. But don't just admire the radioturn it on. My '65 Mustang is driven not kept in the garage & uncovered once in a while and admired. The standard serial interface worked quite well, but NOT with the standard K2 cable, which is a dog for RFI if your TX antenna is close to your rig. To solve the RFI issue, simply rebuild the serial cable with twisted pair (like CAT5). See details in http://audiosystemsgroup.com/HamInterfacing.pdf That same pdf shows the control wiring needed -- only pins 2, 3, and connector shell between computer and radio -- and pin 4 plus the connector shell to send CW. Pin 4 drives the base of the standard NPN inverter transistor through a small value resitor (a few kOhms), collector drives the key line of the K2, emitter goes to common. Again, details in the pdf. BTW -- virtually all contest loggers use the same serial and parallel connections and signals to key radios, so if you build an adapter for one logger it will work for all. Another BTW -- the computers I've used for contest logging all run on either W2KPro or XPPro on IBM Thinkpads. No issues with those OSs. 73, Jim Brown K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 AGC usage question
AF LIM is set to 12. Shouldn't that be enough? I wouldn't characterize the signal as strong. It doesn't make any difference what the AF gain is, as long as it's loud enough to hear. Even the beep when I turn AGC back on is raspy. I'm not trying to be argumentative, just trying to get a handle on whether it's pilot error or something else. And how to fix it either way. Re: [Elecraft] K3 how often do you use it?
I use my K3 4 to 6 hours every day sometimes more it has more talk power and a cleaner signal than any other rig I have ever had or still have. Since the born on date June 13 2009 my Ft2000 station holds up the K3 at just the right hight for me I have stopped comparing A/B the receiver of the two radios. My FT2000 DMU U-Tuning 40/80 PEP 2000 firmware up dates fixed a lot wrong with the FT2k I have only transmitted on the Yaesu rig 3 times since getting my K3 kit built. I though I was going to be bothered by the size, I found that it never was an issue. The only thing I really miss is a triple band stacking registry like my Yaesu has, however I have learned to live with out it. On the size small and light has advantages over big and heavy everything in life is a trade off this thing goes mobile so easy and it has top of the line performance as well. Performance wise the K3 is hard to find fault with. The company Elecraft is light years ahead of the "big three" no face saving statements covering up design flaws, we are happy with the design there is nothing wrong with it! Yaesu rigs are still losing the front end preamps and mixers! No unanswered e-mails! No stupid answers on phone calls about issues by service personal! Rapid attention by the owners on the "group" unlike the "big three". Continuing up grading new features improvements in performance. No need to sell at a big loss a pro to get a pro 1 , pro 2, pro3. I could go on but you all get the picture there is only small nic picks that I would change one being the volume of the side tone, spot and how its tied together, even this is just a matter of getting used to how it works. My experience with my FT2000 was so bad the first year with twice broken front end and couple that with the (I feel) intentional lying about Diversity Receive and roof filter performance. The only "JOY" had was UPS made money shipping it. I will not be purchasing a FT5000 or even thinking about one Yaesu lied and my 18 years loyalty died. And besides I have a K3 which is better than my FT2k in every way but size and looks, Yaesu DMU eye candy is nice but that's what it is over priced eye candy. One night I was AM broadcast DXing just to see what I could hear I live 12 miles from WLS .890 50k boomer 3 miles from Radio Mickey Mouse 1.300 AM, 20 miles from .780 WBBM 50k boomer I was using my Hy Tower antenna listen to .770 WABC in NY clear and clean with out the woop woop of .780 just like I was in there 100 % coverage zone I find that amazing just a quick adjustment of the shift a bit cleaned up the interference just up the band. I have never experienced any thing like that with any other radio even a Rich Mish rebuilt R390a Motorola, FT1000d and so on. My location is close to many AM broadcast stations the K3 don't even know they are there when I'm on the ham bands. Can't say that about the FT2000 or some of the Icom's I have had in the past. Elecraft has designed a "pro stock race car" capable with the right tune up winning any NHRA drag race. It's up to the driver /tuner to adjust and get it right for best performance, the rig often has to much "gain" and needs to be pulled back a bit to optimize the performance. Again I use my K3 4 to 6 hrs every day all I can say is right on Elecraft keep up the good work I appreciate it very much, and job well done, the field is all chasing you. Roger, A cheap and dirty way to check your RS232 and the serial cable is to jumper pins 2 and 3 of the K3 end of the serial cable (after it was removed from the K3). G'day, Being retired my K3 is used every day mainly chasing down DX so more listening than transmitting. I don't have any problem with the form factor, suits me just fine, so does the K2 I built in 2000 and which accounted for over 200 DXCC for me during its evolution from QRP to QRO and my improving antenna circumstances. It took a while to get used to the soft buttons on the K3 compared to the solid clicky action of those on the K2. I've never had a pan-display so I don't miss it and looking at the operating sequences in the K5D video it seems to be a big distraction of limited use. For me the K3 build experience is no where near as much fun as the K2 but that isn't the question. Re: [Elecraft] K3 how often do you use it?
I think the thing to do for those who want a "big" radio is to purchase two K3's. My boss bought a used K3 last week and I took it home to check it out compared to my newer unit. I put them side by side on my desk, and the two of them look awesome and impressive. The pair still costs less than a ICOM 7800 so this is an economical solution that consumes as much desk space. The power output issue is a red herring. Most people run some type of amplifier, and any one of them that runs legal output power can be driven by the K3. I replaced the DSP board in my K3 and I admit that I liked it before, but it sounds great now. I have poor antennas but signals sound great on it both on CW and SSB. I always use headphones so the discussion of how it sounds through speakers I have no comment on. 73, Bob W5OV -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Randy Downs Sent: Sunday, January 10, 2010 6:21 AM To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3 how often do you use it? Well it seems K3 users put more mileage than some people think on there radios. I think people buy with there ego more than with there brains. So I guess this gentleman was correct in saying that Elecraft has failed at looking at marketing. The first design criteria should have been looks, second transmit power, and third weight/size of the radio and lastly using depleted uranium for the knob. This is my first Elecraft product when I bought my 2 K3's. I'll be honest I never looked at Elecraft before as the K2 looked to be a toy. It took a bad experience with the purchase of a newly released radio a couple of years ago to make me take a look at the newly announced K3. I have had so many rigs and it seems they all had issues and had to be modified to fix the problems. Such as the nb being on all of the time on unnamed yaesu models, very bad cw clicks, wax that got in to trimmer caps, ( although I did keep the Ic-765 as the rx was good on this one), glue that became conductive after a time frame, just to name a few. It seemed normal for so long. Now don't get me wrong, Elecraft has made some hardware changes as well as firmware changes to make things better. But they respond and respond quickly to user input most of the time. I would like to see a "big radio" when I set down at the bench but after using it for well over a year now I don't miss it. I would miss the performance though. I'm no big gun, I'm not into contesting, but when sunspots are cooking and I want to be able to use my rig without the front end being blasted with desense, then I am very happy with my purchase choice. Re: [Elecraft] Data Mode
Jack, The advantage to using DATA A mode is that the compression is set to zero and the Equalization is turned off. If you are also using SSB and have compression set for SSB and/or are using equalization for normal (speech) SSB mode, then it will be an advantage for you to use DATA A instead of SSB. If you never use a microphone with the K3, then you will find no difference. 73, Don W3FPR W4GRJ wrote: > I use an external soundcard/interface "Navigator". Thanks for the replies. I am running an XP Laptop that is only doing logging during the contest. I will give the homebrew interface a try and see how that works. Re: [Elecraft] K3 New DSP board installed
The audio level differences remind me of a situation I had w/ a DSP board, but had nothing to do w/ the Rev D upgrade. Your original DSP board may have been "defective". I had to replace one of my K3's DSP board a while back as I was noticing a significant audio level difference between the two K3s, ie. AF gain, monitor level, et.al., always had to be much higher on the one vs. the other. Swapping in a replacement DSP board resolved the issue and audio levels now match w/ similar settings. While the audio levels were drastically different on the "defective" DSP board, it still worked in all respects and would otherwise have appeared to have been a 100% perfect board if there was no point of comparison. The settings required to achieve similar audio drive on the removed DSP board were much higher, as you report on your original board, so I suspect your original had the same issue mine did, and was simply defective. 73 - no3m >> >> --- On Sat, 1/9/10, Steve Ellington wrote: >> >> From: Steve Ellington >> Subject: [Elecraft] K3 New DSP board installed >> To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net >> Date: Saturday, January 9, 2010, 9:41 AM >> >> The installation of the Rev D DSP board went smoothly. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 versus Yaesu FT-1000D
Licensed in 1958 (I really was a youngster then), I have had the pleasure of owning a lot of different radios over the years, the last 3 were FT-1000D, FT1000Mp3 MKV and a TS-480 loved all of them. However, in my humble opinion, none compare to the K3. My only criticism, which Wayne has promised to address soon, is the inability to manage memories via software. Other than that, the K3 is my perfect radio. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 versus Yaesu FT-1000D
I owned many years ago a FT-1000D and one month was enough for me to know that it was not a good radio for contestings/dx chase, not only I suffered the low BDR but also the high noise floor that did not let me hear weak stations from the noise, and of course when some one was close to my freq I lost the weak dx station.End of the story I sold it to buy the new FT-1000MP that was day and night compared to the 1000D. [Elecraft] K3 how often do you use it?
In the past on other rigs I have actually had to turn the rig off and go do something else. I guess we should end this thread but I wanted to see if I was missing something here. I do believe Elecraft may want to look at marketing differently. Maybe they could have scantily clad girls hand out hats. No never mind. Thanks for all the answers guys. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 versus Yaesu FT-1000D
Stan and Company, Your points are well made Stan. I have inadvertently raised stink on the TenTec site questioning whether the development of this fine radio was now over. There has not been an upgrade now for over a year. I made the mistake of comparing the performance of Elecraft and TenTec and some of my fellow OII users took real exception that such a comparison should be voiced. Still this is one way progress is achieved. See what the other guy is doing and try to do better. Neither the K3 nor OII are perfect but they are both very good radios. If you compare the input of the users, designers and owners to the reflector then no one beats Elecraft. I would like a larger K3 but then again the small size and light weight of the K3 makes it possible to ship with relative ease from factory to overseas users. The kit approach is great in that it familiarizes us with the radio and allows one to more easily make hardware modifications. It also reduces import duty and cost. I have questioned before if a remote pad similar to the one sold by TenTec would make the radio more user friendly for some. If you are not using a logging program tied into the radio then punching the memory buttons is a pain for contest operation. I am now finding that I like the remote tuning knob on the OII pad in that one can set the radio back perhaps at an elevated position and easily tune. I believe there has even been some mention from the mother ship that such a pod is being considered. These days I am using the OII for a while waiting receipt of my DSP up grade board. This will not ship to me for another two weeks and it appears the ship date will be five weeks post my order so be prepared for a wait if you order this board. My plan is to finish off all upgrades and then install the second rx and antenna tuner purchased this past summer. I must learn to work faster. Guys lets not be too critical of those who criticize the K3 but be gentle. I hope Erich and Wayne are a long way from retirement as we will be fortunate to see their like again. 73 Doug EI2CN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

W8JI says: "That's like going to the Ford Mustang forum and asking how Mustangs are. :-)" Take out Ford Mustang and insert K-3. I have been on the K-3 relectors for many months and it is obvious many drink the Elecraft Kool Aid. Mostly the only honest responses I got on the K-3 were private emails. If you dis the K-3 in public, one will get beat up cuz them K-3ers can get VERY nasty. I actually had one K-3er write me an extremely nasty email telling me to get off the K-3 reflector because my questions were too detrimental to K-3's Stan K9IUQ I don't know why people are like that, although some people do make mistakes or make a single problem with one radio a universal problem. I don't know of any perfect radio. They are just like women. :-) I will say thisI like how my Yaesu FT1000MP MKV's feel and work better than anything else except: I don't like a virtual radio, I want something to just grab and push buttons. I spend too much time with my computer as it is. I need stereo diversity with my antennas. Only the K3 does that properly in a radio package. There is no other choice. I want a cleaner transmitter. Even though I have declicked the MKV's, I'd like them to be better. The K3 is much cleaner (sometimes too clean). The K3 is better receiving with strong signals on crowded bands like contests. I'd like the K3 to be inside the FT1000 box and use the knobs and buttons of the FT1000, but it isn't going to happen. But the assertion that K3 owners hardly ever use their radios makes it a pretty ludicrous opinion. The K3 can't possibly be all things to all people but if it can be done in firmware it certainly tries. However size / ergonomics is one aspect where it can only be one thing or the other. The fact that Elecraft went for a light weight small size package probably does reflect the preferences of its founders, if previous Elecraft models are anything to go by. They wanted to create a high performance radio that could easily be used in the field, as well as at home. I guess they might also have considered that smaller, lower cost radios sell in greater numbers and represent less of a business risk than one that appealed only to those with deep pockets and a very large shack. I certainly would not have bought a K3 if it was $1000 more, twice the size and four times the weight. Yaesu, Icom and Ten-Tec both have a range of products that cater for all needs from the portable operator to the shack-bound top DXers. Note that Kenwood with its smaller range don't make a desktop leviathan either. [Elecraft] Re: Elecraft K3 versus Yaesu FT-100 0D
Hello Steve, Although you will get a different view if you post your thread in Fox Tango mail reflector, I would agree to all your findings.. Telecommunication technology is forever advancing. The architecture and design principle between FT1000D and K3 are totally different. At least, there is ONE major difference. K3 employs dual conversion but FT1000D employs quad-conversion. Although in the good old days, all the flagship HF rigs were using quad-conversion, more stages of I..F. do imply more birdies, internal noise and images. The advancement in IF DSP also gives more tight / shape factor for the IF filters. The effectiveness / success of IF DSP will depend on: 1. the speed of the DSP chip set; 2. the skill of the designer to write effective + efficient firmware for the DSP I have given up all my analogue transceivers for some time (except K2). 73 Johnny VR2XMC - 郵件原件 寄件人﹕ Steve Ireland 收件人﹕ elecraft@mailman.qth.net 傳送日期﹕ 2010/1/10 (日) 1:39:19 PM 主題: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 versus Yaesu FT-1000D G'day It has been interested in reading the thread about a (or some) 'big gun' contesters still preferring the classic FT-1000D over the Elecraft K3. I should probably keep for the one day I decide to bring the K3 out to the park... but wife says time to clean the shack. My loss is your gain. $330 shipped CONUS. PayPal or USPS money order only. Pse contact me off-list if interested.
