Re: [Elecraft] K3 #4407 - dead

2010-08-16 Thread Gary Dezern
Got a call from the insurance company today - they approved my claim. Probably
a week or so before I see the check, and then I'll be calling up Elecraft for a
replacement. Looks like I'll make it in time to avoid the price increase as
well!

I'll likely configure the new one identically to the old: K3/100, KAT3, KBPF3,
TCXO upgrade, KXV3A, KDVR3 and 2.8k/1.8k/6k/400 8 pole filters. This seemed to
work out well for me.

The insurance company told me I could do whatever I want with the old K3 (and
everything else that was damaged.) I wonder if I could salvage the 8pole
filters and put them in the new radio... the savings would almost cover the
deductible.

Take care and 73's

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and USB Audio Codec

2010-08-16 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
hi Joe,

I am a bit late for a reply, but anyway.
The way the codec is implemented is (as far I understand it) different and
more straitforward. There is no "soundcard" in the radio, but the data
stream is directly derived from the IF-DSP.
My friend Gert, OE3ZK described it as follows:

Es wird kein eigener (billig) SoundChip eingesetzt. Die USB Audio CODEC
Aufbereitung erfolgt direkt aus der ZF-DSP der Transceiver. Abgesehen von
den Quarzungenauigkeiten der billig Sound-Chips wird  DSP nicht
kaskadiert, das ist der wesentliche Qualitätsunterschied.

I translate:
There is no (cheap) Soundchip in the radio. The USB Audio Codec is
directly created out of the IF-DSP of the transceiver. There are no
inaccuracies of the cheap soundchip quartz and there is no cascading of
DSP's, that is a significant difference in quality.

I have a block diagram of the IC-7200 on my website, you can see it here:
http://oe9fwv.shacknet.nu/oe9fwv/bilder/IC-7200%20USB.jpg

This is an interesting approach in my opinion and has two major
advantages. Better quality of the signal for soundcard modes independent
from external soundcards, no additional cables and devices for mobile use.
A radio and the computer.
Thats all. Remote control included.

Yes. Mostly. ;)

The pre-amp and attenuator happens, I think, BEFORE the IF that goes into the

A "neater and cleaner" solution is to get a RJ-45 jack in a
little two-inch-square "biscuit" terminal block used in the
data and telephone industry and available at most "serious"
electronic dealers. There are two types - one with wire leads
from the jack and the other with screw terminals on an enclosed
connection block. For your purposes, the latter type would be
  easier to deal with.

[Elecraft] K2 Mic hookup

2010-08-16 Thread Edward R. Cole

Bill,

I have a MH-31 mic with the RJ45 plug and wanted to use it with my
Yaesu FT-847 that requires a 8-pin jack. I bought a RJ45 jack in a
wall outlet plate, wired the 8-pin jack to the outlet and plug the
mic into the jack. I mounted the wall plate onto plastic outlet box
made for attaching to a wall surface. Got the parts at a local
builder's supply (except the 8-pin mic jack). The MH-31 came with my FT-817.

73, Ed - KL7UW
My Heil mic was bought for the FT-847 but now is used on the K3.

Have a Yaesu MH-31 mike with the RJ45 connector on it. Was going to
cut it off and install the 8 pin connector from Radio Shack, P/N
274-025, till I read some posts on this list about the problems
soldering to the mike cable.
So, was wondering if anyone knows of a female RJ45 socket, or Jack,
that I can get to make up a short adapter cable so I can plug my
MH-31 into it and that into the 8 pin connector on the K2?
Thanks for any help,

"Normal mixtures?" And no, I am not going to take Elecraft to court
over ADA issues. I think I just don't like waterfalls on screens. The
kind on rivers are great. Fortunately, I quickly found the switch that
got rid of the WF and gave me a full-screen spectrum display, and it was
a lot of fun, and impressive, to play with it. Keeping track of the two

Nate,

Check to see if you have Control Board U6 in the right way 'round. If
it is backwards, the symptoms you report will be present along with the
5 volt regulator getting warm (hot if you leave it that way enough time).
U6 usually survives that abuse.

[Elecraft] {P3] Waterfall Resolution

2010-08-16 Thread David Gilbert

For those who now have a P3 and also use CW Skimmer in one form or
another, how do the waterfall displays compare on CW for resolution and
scroll rate? I often use CW Skimmer in "blind" mode with just the audio
feed from my K3 to provide a running visual CW display (about 12 to 15
seconds on my monitor) in case I miss part of a contest exchange. It's
clumsy and MUCH less effective in general than copying by ear, but it
sometimes helps me avoid asking for a repeat if I miss a character. Of
all the various non-SDR applications I tried that are capable of
displaying a waterfall (Spectrogram, DigiPan, MixW, MultiPSK, etc) CW
Skimmer was heads above the rest, but the recent comments about the
sharpness of the P3 display make me wonder if the P3 is potentially
better in spite of the smaller screen. With CW Skimmer, visual copy
above roughly 35 wpm gets pretty dicey.

[Elecraft] Question on K3 and LP-PAN

2010-08-16 Thread w0ih

In looking at the LP-PAN and the connections, and what I've seen on the Flex
radios, if you connect up an LP-PAN to the K3, the receive signals that you
hear through the computer sound card output would NOT be going through the
K3 roofing filters.

The LP-PAN would of course give you the spectrum display, but not the signal
processing from the K3.
Any signals that come through the computer would be internally (to the
computer) generated.

Therefore, if you wanted to use the K3 system filters, you need to go
through the K3 audio output.

Is this true?

This may have already been answered, but there is a K3 "macro" capability
that allows you to store a string of K3 commands and invoke them with a
button press of the PF1, PF2, or tap/hold of M1-M4. You can have 10 such
"macros" available at a time.

The K3 Utility offers a "command macro" editor that allows you to develop
and test and store into your K3 a string of K3 commands. You might use two
of these "macros" to select your back panel and front panel microphones,
their bias settings, and perhaps Tx EQ settings.

There are examples of Command Macros in the K3 Utility Help = see the
"command tester" page and the related "command macro editor" section.

You'll find the K3 Programmer's Reference an invaluable source of
information on those K3 commands.

If you need help getting this going, send me the specifics of your preferred
Tx EQ settings for each microphone and I'll send you something to get you
started.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 TX settings

Hi,

I am proud owner of K3 #4516 and have a question.

I have two mics I like to use. One is the Yamaha CM-500 headset w/mic. It
is plugged into the back of the K3 (CONFIG/RPL Bias). I have worked to get
the audio sounding like I want it and have determined the gain and comp as
well as the setting for the TX equalizer.

I also have a Heil HM-10 Dual mic plugged into he front (FPH no bias) with a
Heil Kenwood connector. I haven't spent much time with this combo as yet.

I would like to know if it's possible to store the mic settings for these
two mics so that I don't have to reset all the parameters manually.

If it's possible, be specific as I'm very new to this rig and am learning as
I go.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Cursor Position

2010-08-16 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Well Fred, I find the waterfall valuable for displaying the recent history
of signals, showing those that have stopped recently still travelling down
the screen.

Also, I can recognize different content and modulation systems on the
waterfall better than I can with the spectrum display, although that's
surely not true for someone who has spent a lot of time studying the
spectrum of signals.

Yes, the waterfall is "color coded" and also varies in brightness or
intensity. Low-level signals are blue and the colors shift through yellow to
red for the strongest - with the normal mixtures in between.

Ron AC7AC

-Original Message-
I did notice that the waterfall seemed to be of little use to me, and I
don't know if that's because I'm not real fond of waterfalls and use the
MMTTY spectrum display on RTTY, or because the P3 waterfall is
color-coded somehow that's lost for me.

Spectrogram 16 works fine with WIN 7 Ultimate (32 bit). It keeps several
useful

clarifies matters a bit wrt to the WIN 7 mixer, etc. even though it
stops with VISTA.

Got to play with N6XI's new P3 this last weekend. Pretty cool!. I did
figure out that one of the little "U-channels" was VFO A and the other
was B because turning the B knob moved it, and they get wider with wider
filters. Unfortunately they look the same to me. In fact, all of it
looks the same, I don't have any color vision. Notwithstanding, the P3
sure seemed usable to me.

I did notice that the waterfall seemed to be of little use to me, and I
don't know if that's because I'm not real fond of waterfalls and use the

Supporting myself in college at the end of the 50's/early 60's as an
engineer at the local TV station, color TV was just showing up. I never
turned the color monitor on so I never had to fix it because it never
broke on my shift. All the rest I could do with the RGB scope, all of
which were "Tektronix scope-color" traces. Most hams are male, most
males max out at about 16 colors [Windows default], "peach" is a fruit,
not a color if you're male, and no male knows what mauve is.

Re: [Elecraft] k3 rs232 problem

2010-08-16 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
Run the K3 utility and see if you are able to do various tasks, view
the contents, filter settings, etc. If you can do that, then there is
most likely just some problem with the MM hookup.

If you can't run the utility properly, then if you have a USB serial
device, try replacing it, or using different USB ports on the PC. If
you can get it to work anywhere, then you have your answer.

Yes, PLEASE optional. Particularly on anything other than a tuning knob.

Once I get used to how far a tuning knob moves frequency on a

bells and whistles than version 5, and operates with slight differences,
but the basics are still the same.
Tom Hammond's setup information will not be exactly correct but can
still give you some clues. Version 16 has a good help file.
Google will show you a number of download locations.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 - Ballistic Tuning

2010-08-16 Thread Lance Collister, W7GJ
If Elecraft is finally going to implement ballistic tuning, I think it will be
a
welcome addition to most everyone. If people don't want to use it, you just
turn the
dial more slowly to have the radio tune as it does now. I am not sure it
requires
the addition of more options on the Menu Can't wait to see it!

It would appear that DigiKey has 1N5344B (14V 500 mW axial) zener

Re: [Elecraft] 1N4108

2010-08-16 Thread The Smiths

Well, I may be a cheat, but when I can't get something that comes in bulk (1000
units at a time), I go to the manufactures web site and I fill out an on-line
request for "samples" where you can have up to 100 of pretty much any item.
With the exception of IC's which they usually limit to about 10. They
generally ship them in about a days time, and at no charge. I haven't yet
encountered a manufacture that didn't offer this service.

I just downloaded V5. It starts up OK on Win7 Home Premium 64 bit. It can't
find

I didn't have any sound in to see what it actually does on Win 7.

When I can't find what I need at DigiKey I always go to Jameco.

Jameco is a large supplier to industry but handles small orders to
individuals very efficiently and they always seem to have what I need. I
don't think there is a minimum overall order size and the only time I have
had to order 10 of some part it was for parts costing only a few cents each.
A bonus for Jameco is that their web site is very easy to navigate,

Re: [Elecraft] 1N4108

2010-08-16 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
This is the point where you go to replace by value, as what you are
trying to replace is a bulk diode with bulk variations intended to
feed machines with tapes.

Second thing, if you had to replace it because it burned up, always
step up the power ratings, like from the 1.5 watts of the 1N4108 to 5
watts.

Given that go to the Mouser.com parts search engine:

http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Central-Semiconductor/CZ5351B/?qs=SSucg2PyLi5%252b8cGZ3v26ag%3d%3d

If that's a grain of wheat zener, look at the more general search at

http://www.mouser.com/Semiconductors/Diodes-Rectifiers/Zener-Diodes/_/N-2xpqt?P=1z0w7oz&Keyword=zener+diode&FS=True

Mouser's search engine bailed me out many times and great source of
what can be found.

I'll let you look up the specs, but if you can use the 8.2v Zener you can buy
them for about .03 each here:

Re: [Elecraft] [P3] Discoveries

2010-08-16 Thread Rick Prather
I can second that!

As soon as I got the P3 working I realized that the annoying buzz I had noticed
occasionally as I tuned 20 Meters was actually a nasty, wide 20db noise source
every 50 Khz. It looked so bad on the P3 that it got me motivated to check it
out.

After a bit of disconnecting things here in the house before I was going to
start flipping fuses I disconnected my u-Verse modem and killed the noise.
Then with the modem running again I started disconnecting connections -
ethernet, data in/out and phone connection. By rerouting the phone line I was
able to drop it about 10db. Still there but better and now I have a roadmap to
work on as much of the remainder as I can.

It's amazing how what seemed like a minor annoyance became an obvious problem
when it shows up on the scope!

BTW, has anyone noticed the very interesting waterfall pictograms created by
the Chinese radar just below 40 meters?

[Elecraft] [P3] Discoveries

2010-08-16 Thread dalekretzer
The post by Gary, VE1RGB, about unexpected benefits of having the P3
panadapter struck a chord with me worth sharing.

I have what appears to be a local noise source that I knew previously
moved around a bit, but I thought it was intermittent. With the P3 just
hooked up a few days ago, I now can see that noise not only is always
on, but it also moves around a lot more than I thought. Unless I had
been spinning the dial of the K3 all over the band(s), I'd never have
realized this without the panadapter.

The added knowledge has inspired me to haul out the little KX1 and
handheld loop antenna and go noise sniffing. Too bad I can't as easily
tote the P3 along, but I'm sure tickled with the many unexpected
benefits of having such a wonderful addition to the Elecraft lineup.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 or KRX3

2010-08-16 Thread David Gilbert

Keep in mind that you can do point/click freqeuncy changes from the
bandmap in certain logging programs. Both N1MM (contesting) and
Logger32 (general logger) offer rapid QSY that way I assume others
do as well. If you spot a frequency of interest on the Rocky display,
you could do the actual QSY from the logger bandmap. I've sometimes
even loaded in dummy callsigns every few KHz on the bandmap so that I
can just step through them for QSY.

[Elecraft] K3 problem

2010-08-16 Thread Jerry Pittenger
Well it looks like I have a problem. There is an intermittent buzz on the
speaker audio. When I turn on the radio it works perfectly. But after a
few minutes a strong buzz overlays the audio. It is sever. You can hear
the stations under the buzz. If I turn the radio off and immediately back
on, the buzz is still there. However if I leave the radio off for 3 or 4
minutes and turn it on, it is fine for a few minutes and then the buzz pops
back on. Also keying the radio on CW also seems to fire up the receiver
buzz. Note that it is okay on a pair of headphones. It is like it is
going into oscillation. Everything else on the radio seems normal.

Any suggestions?I suspect a component in the audio amplifier. Does the
headphone jack take the audio signal before it hits the main audio amp?
I wish I had a set of circuit diagrams.

Jerry K8RA

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Auto Shift/Width - Possible?

2010-08-16 Thread The Smiths

If your ears don't work Pete, how about you use your eyes. There's a great
free program that works with your computers sound card input. It's called
Spectrogram and it's FREE. You can download it here:
http://w5big.com/Spectrogram517.zip
with this program you can set up a marker for your "zero beat" PITCH freq. and
you can visually see all the signals within your pass band area. When you have
decided which is the one that you want to tune in, all you have to do is move
your VFO until that particular signal is sitting right on top of the Marker
line (pitch freq marker).

The great thing about it is it works Post filters, notch, width and shift
because it's using the audio out of your rig. This means that you can not only
see the signals, but you will be able to adjust your manual notch freq. and see
how it effects the signals around the marker. You'll also be able to narrow or
widen your width filter then shift around so that you can visually watch how
you are cutting off other signals to the side of your Pitch marker freq.

It's a great too to have, and from what you've said about not being able to
tune someone in, I think that this would be a perfect tool for you. One last
benefit for you to have this program would be for setting up your REF CAL
alignment in the K3 too. This program will get you within 1 Hz (or less) of
Zero Beat. (Config: Ref Cal)

Of course there's always the CWT marker that you could move around until you've
lined the K3 in Zero beat, and if you put the right signal in the display and
hit SPOT (while in CWT mode) it will automatically set that for you as well
(+/-2 Hz). The combination of looking at the Spectrogram, cleaning out the
unwanted signals, then hitting auto spot on the K3 is your best bet for fast
automation.
Hope this helps solve your issue.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Auto Shift/Width - Possible?

2010-08-16 Thread Don Wilhelm
Pete,

I believe the Auto-Spot feature is the closest thing to what you are
looking for.
If you need to get more sophisticated than that, I would suggest you
connect the K3 to the soundcard input and use something like Spectrogram
or some other FFT based audio spectrum analyzer to give you a view of
the receive passband and the signals in it.

Normally, you should center the filter passband at your CW sidetone
(spot) frequency, and use the VFO to move the signal to that frequency.
Once you get close, auto-spot will move it 'right-on'.

A bit of practice with Spectrogram (or other) could give you a better
feel for the effects of the width and shift controls. You can download
version 5 of Spectrogram from Tom Hammond's website www.n0ss.net. Tom
has some setup information on his site as well. Try it and see if that
helps. If nothing else, it will give you some practice "training your
brain" to recognize tones a little better.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 or KRX3

2010-08-16 Thread Bill Davis Jr

Many are using the SoftRock II Specials that Tony sold for IF Panadapter use.
They ARE STILL AVAILABLE but are now sold by a different person
with Tony's blessings

http://www.w6dvc.com/

I have used a Softrock and a Clifton Labs Z10 buffer from the very
beginning and am very happy with the results. I use PowerSDR IF v1.19.3.5 for
point and click operation and am happy with the results for the most part.
Rocky software is much better than PSDR for weak sig detection, but you loose
the Point and Click control of the K3. So for the stuff below the noise I stop
PSDR and activate Rocky. Since most of my opeartions are weak signal I run
Rocky and operate the K3 in a normal manner. For CW Rocky is fantastic. With
96Khz soundcard setup max resolution is about 15Khz for full width on my
monitor.

If I want FULL SDR operation, I turn on the SDR1000. It doesn't get turned on
that much. (Anyone want to buy a 100w/ATU Flex 1000? ) The K3
is what is running here full time.

I am curious about the P3, but I can't yet justify the expenditure given the
performance of my SoftRock/ Clifton labs/ homemade PC Box panadapter. The SR
and buffer are hidden from view behind the K3 and are in operation all the time
I have the K3 on. (Usually 14-16hrs a day). I operate VHF/UHF/Microwave weak
signal and a some of HF. My panadapter allows me to look at a 96Khz "window"
regardless of the band of operation which I can live with very easily. If I
want greater resolution I can change that window with both software packages.
For receive only operation with the SDR, the software setup is NOT that big of
a deal. The SoftRock gang on the Yahoo group are as helpful as any you will
ever meet and will get you going. For about $50 you are set. Don't like it?
You can sell the "combo" in a heartbeat on the Yahoo group.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/softrock40/

I can use PowerSDR to provide monitoring of two additional frequencies of the
band I am operating as long as I'm not changing frequencies as I monitor. With
Rocky one additional freq. During VHF contesting I often operate on one freq
while monitoring a rover freq with the panadapter
"receiver" to keep track of his availability. Be aware ... if I change freq on
the K3 I have to reset SDR "receiver" freq. But I have a second freq option.

http://www.qth.net/k0awu/K3System.html

Its all a matter of what you want. I have a PC running all the time and a PC
based panadapter is no big deal. The K3 never leaves the radio
bench and I like the large panadapter at the logging computer.

If you JUST want to "see the activity", I see no problem. If you want a
single source integrated hardware/software companion to your K3, the P3
is of course the only option.

  So ... that's my "take".

73 and good DX Bill K0AWU EN37ed

[Elecraft] P3 and KRX3

2010-08-16 Thread N2TK, Tony

Hi Dave,
My wish list is the same too. If Elecraft offered the KRX3 hardware mode to
bring out the IF maybe they could do an exchange program like they have with
the DSP upgrade or at least a kit?

Has there been any conclusions on whether Elecraft will offer the
necessary upgrades to allow the P3 to work with the KRX3? If so, any
likely time frame?

a. Hardware mod for the K3 to bring out the IF of the KRX3 with
suitable isolation from the main receiver.

b. Software mod for the P3 to track the KRX3.

This seems like a no-brainer from an operating point of view ... operate
on one band using the main receiver while monitoring another band with
the KRX3/P3.

[Elecraft] [K3] Auto Shift/Width - Possible?

2010-08-16 Thread Pete Smith
I am one of those semi-tone-deaf people -- which means that my
zero-beating is unsure, and when I need to narrow my CW bandpass, I have
trouble quickly and accurately manipulating the Shift and Width controls
to narrow the bandpass and center it on the desired signal. This really
came home to me in this weekend's WAE CW contest.

Given that the audio is being digitally manipulated anyway, is there any
possibility of implementing an automatic process for picking out one of
2 or 3 signals and centering the narrower bandpass characteristic on
it? I realize that the processor couldn't tell which signal was the
desired one, so you would have to have the option of using a button push
or a CAT command to step quickly through the signals in the original
bandpass to select the correct one.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 or KRX3

2010-08-16 Thread WA9VEE

Hi. I just want to mention re KRx3, good antennas on the 2nd receiver are not
needed to make diversity the best feature on my K3. 2nd antenna here just a
floor to ceiling wire stuck to the wall using a little MFJ tuner. Main
antenna a 200' stealth end fed wire. 80% of the time diversity improves the
overall signal especially on QRP sprint weak signal work.
