out of luck.

Yep, I have two Win 7 machines and have generally had excellent
results.
There still are some pieces of hardware (e.g. M-Audio studio
sound
interfaces) for which the Win 7 drivers either don't exist or
exist but
don't work. And I do know of one piece of Ham-related software
that won't
run under Win 7, viz. the Dimension 4 time interface. This is
used by
weak-signal guys (WSPR, JT65, etc.) to sync the PC to the Bureau
of
Standards time. Win 7 has a built-in gadget to do it, and
apparently won't
give other programs access to set the clock. With adequate
hacking, Vista
can be forced to allow D4 to run, but it was really written for
XP and
hasn't been updated.

With certain computers, it is not as easy as it sounds to keep
your clock
accurate to within a fraction of a second, because the on-board
clock may
drift quite a bit and have to be reset constantly; and
unfortunately, Win 7
does not have a setting (at least not one I can find) that allows
the user
to increase the frequency of syncing the clock to a standard.

Anyway, other than the above-mentioned glitches, Win 7 runs fine
and is IMHO
more likable than XP.

That is good information, but actually, my choice is to have 2 computers
- one for the shack and one for other personal stuff like email and
documents. Computers have become a commodity item - you can buy a
refurbished PC loaded with WinXP pro for less than $200. More than
adequate for running the hamshack.

2011-01-04 Thread Amateur Radio Operator N5GE

Don et al,

You can run anything that runs on XP on Win 7 by installing an XP virtual
machine on the computer. It's a free download from Microsoft's web site and you
can have your choice of the 64 bit or 32bit version. You don't have to dual
boot, and it won't run unless you start it up from the Win 7 menu, or you can
set it up so that it runs when win 7 boots up.

No need to mess with all that other add-on stuff or have two computers in the
shack.

Re: [Elecraft] win 7 32/64 bit

2011-01-04 Thread tuxman
  Bob,

if you are that concerned about windose, why not look into Linux. Both
32 and 64 bit.
The Linux system comes in different flavors with more popular ones being
Ubuntu, LinuxMint, Fedora.

Google "distro watch" and view the complete list.
You can download any os and try it without install onto your hard drive
(this is called "live").
This way, you can determine which one is good for you.

Install is as easy as abc. That's because you do not need "drivers" to
install afterwards.
The "drivers" are already in the Linux kernal.
You then install Linux side by side with windose. This is called duo
boot. You chose which os you want to use.
There are also many ham radio apps in Linux and some do a bang-up job.

The best part of Linux is, it's more secure! No viruses to worry about
like in windose!
You can use it on older (dedicated ham use) PC's (the other one won't
run at all) and it's cost effective.

hope this helps,

I cannot disagree with Tommy if you are using the applications that he
has mentioned. But if you are dependent on Spectrogram, or SpectrumLab,
or other applications that are no longer supported (or are not updated
for Win7), then you will be forced to dedicate a WinXP computer to the
ham station.

This is application dependent - some work, and some do not. Make your
decisions and accept the consequences.

Re: [Elecraft] win 7 32/64 bit

2011-01-04 Thread Mike
Unless there is a really compelling reason to change, I'd stick to XP.

Win7 tightens down the screws, especially if you like to crawl around in the
system
and poke things.

Since NT, MS has suggested that it's not good to write to files under the
program
files directory, but didn't enforce it. Now they do, and some software authors
either
were not aware of that or choose to kludge around it. So the answer to whether
a
program will be happy in Win7 (and vice versa) is.. maybe.

Another difference: In previous incarnations, you could create folders and
shortcuts
in the Start menu, and move stuff around so it looked like you wanted it to
look.
Almost impossible now.

I know at some point I'll have to change, but I'm very forcibly dragging my
heels.

My $.02 worth. May be worth less. :-D

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] KAT100 + KPA100 power supply in EC2

2011-01-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Werner,

From prior photos that I have seen, you have great milling
capabilities, but the KPA100 speaker is exposed through the heatsink (no
need for any milling). The only problem for using the KPA100 speaker is
that you have to run a separate cable for the speaker (and provide an
input to the EC2). Most just ignore the KPA100 speaker and use the
speaker in the K2 QRP cover.

OTOH, if you want a front firing speaker, and are willing to use another
EC2 enclosure, the SP2 speaker project (that never made production) is

Re: [Elecraft] win 7 32/64 bit

2011-01-04 Thread Tommy Alderman
This is probably the first time (and quite possibly the last time) I will
have to disagree with Don's advice!

I built my own PC (all 5 of them) and just about as soon as Win 7 came out,
I purchased and loaded Win 7 Professional 64-bit op-system on my PC. I
successfully run N1MM Logger, YPlog (a very old program), any K3 or P3
utility, telnet, reverse beacon network, Skimmer,in other words so far I
have found no ham related programs that will not run under Win 7. There may
be some, but I haven't found any yet. Lot of folks like to run other
operating systems, stating that they are so much better than Windows -- and
that may be so. However if you want to use a PC for your ham station, there
is no true reason to NOT use Windows and doing so allows you to continue to
enjoy using ham programs and not divert a lot of your time trying to find
drivers to make the ham programs to work.

Just my opinion after being in computers since the early 70's.

  Bob,

There are going to be some ham applications that will not work with Win7
at all (either 32 bit or 64 bit).

If you have an XP computer available, maybe now is the time to make it
the dedicated hamshack computer which will free you to use the Win7
computer for non-ham related work.
I for one will not likely upgrade to Win7 anytime in the near future.
Not only am I happy with WinXP, but I have 6 computers on the home
network, and upgrading them would be quite expensive. I am considering
an "upgrade" to Ubuntu if I can get Samba to talk both ways between my
Windows network and the SMB shares, but my ham station computer will
continue to run Win XP because of the number of ham applications that
run on it. If you want to try out Ubuntu, release 10 is now available,
and there is a "Win Ubuntu" version that you can load as a dual boot
with the Windows OS.

yes Don, you are right! Everything works like you, Bill and Gary described.
I don't know what I did wrong before. I have the 12V header installed, maybe I

[Elecraft] K3 - If you're having audio problems

2011-01-04 Thread K4IA
I don't operate phone much but when I tried to I heard a weak pulsing buzz
corresponding to the USB port polling the radio. I also had trouble
getting the mic gain and compression right. It seemed I had to turn both way
down and yell in the mic because if I turned either up, I got a rushing noise
in the audio. There was no RF "bite" and I was using a star-point ground
system so I assumed I did not have any RF in the shack.

I asked Joe at Microham about it and he suggested the two mods on the
Elecraft website dealing with bypassing a few RF chokes and modifying the
microphone jack. These mods are for early K3s and the instructions tell how
to
check if you need them using a DVM. My K3 #101 was a candidate. Neither
mod is particularly difficult and the only part required is a bit of wire.

I am glad to say that after performing the surgery the pulsing buzz is
gone and the mic gain and compression settings are working normally. Night
and day difference.

I offer this as advice to anyone who experiences issues with noise in the
audio or difficulty adjusting the mic gain and compression.

  Dan,

It does not have to touch, but only to go through the center of the core
(a straight wire through the core is a 1 turn winding).
If your aesthetics would like a tighter turn, then by all means reduce
the length of the insulated portion to make the turn tighter.

Check the power supply to see that it is staying within
regulation when under load. Try the supply on another
radio and see if it does the same thing. Sounds like as
soon as you tried to pull any power through the PS, it goes
out of requlation.

Arie,
You are right and you may be sure he will probably change his rig some
day and then some people will go into a funk. Previously ON4UN used two
Orion II radios and there was much bragging on the TenTec site. He
certainly changed to the K3 but what next. Everyone makes their own
choices. The K3 is a good radio and will be one whether Ham X uses one or
not. What may be more significant is the number of K3s used for contest
work. If you are a DX hound or digital man then the criteria changes.

Happy New Year to all and especially to my fellow K3 users who have
even more reason to be happy.

Re: [Elecraft] K1 went out!

2011-01-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Stan,

Since the K1 was operating into a high SWR, the most likely failure is
the zener diode across the PA transistor output - it is there to kill
high RF voltage spikes, and with a high SWR, the RF voltage will be
either lower than normal or higher than normal at the PA collector
depending on whether the feedline impedance is high or low (Ohm's law
prevails).

The diode is D19. Try removing one end of it and see if the K1
transmits into a dummy load - if it does, then just replace the diode.
If it still does not transmit, it is likely that the PA transistor
and/or one of the components in the PA output have also been damaged.

Moral, do not operate the K1 (or most any other transmitter) into a high
SWR.

73,
Don W3FPR

Hi all,
I have been fiddling with the KDSP2 for a while and am trying to get
my head around the settings for optimal CW reception. Yes, I know
that's all subjective, but I'd be interested in hearing what folks are
using for the denoiser settings (beta, decay, CW gain) as well as the
CW filter gain.

Default values are as follows:

Denoiser
* beta 89
* decay 71
* CW gain 0.00 dB
CW filter
* gain 0.00 dB

Thanks!

[Elecraft] [K2] KAT100 + KPA100 power supply in EC2

2011-01-04 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan

I have built the KAT100 and KPA100 into a custom EC2 housing and it is working
very well,
there is only one little "problem" in the setting which I do not like. The
combo needs two power
supply cables, one for the high current into the KPA100 (Anderson connectors)
and one for the
KAT100 (round plug like in the K2). I'd like to power the unit with only one
power cable into the
AP connector. Did anybody already find an elegant solution for this? I'd prefer
to have the
necessary cables inside the EC2 not a Y-cable outside.

Yes. You have PTT or KEY(CW) configured wrong. maybe try to start N1MM
without the K3 on. Find these settings and verify the configuration.
Also check your cabling. Might try unplugging all cables and
re-connecting one by one.

Re: [Elecraft] KDSP2 - Now What Have I Done?

2011-01-04 Thread Ken Alexander
That did it Don! Many thanks!

Somehow, my first filter setting was: C1 1.35 .75

I don't know how I managed to do that! It requires more button presses than I
thought I made! Anyway, it's fine now and I'll proceed more carefully from
here on.

Thanks again!

Sounds like there's a lookup table in memory with a piece of bad data in it.
If so, there must be a way to re-write itMaybe a way to re-init the ATU.

Sorry for the reference to Craig's old 2008 post above but I
searched the archives to see if anyone had mentioned ON4UN's new 5th edition
of his Low-Band DXing. I just received my copy a few days ago and the K3
was most definitely the star of Chapter 3 - Receiving and Transmitting
Equipment. John's concluding comment at the end of the chapter:

"You can buy the best transceiver there is on the market for a very
reasonable price, the Elecraft K3. And no, I have no connection with
Elecraft, and paid the full price for my K3s. I would be ashamed asking for
a discount for such a wonderful piece of equipment at such a very reasonable
price."

For those who may not have seen it, here's another nice endorsement
from Tom W8JI regarding diversity and the K3:

"I implement stereo diversity by phase locking two separate receivers
(heavily modified R4C's) together so audio outputs are exactly locked in
phase. The receivers are virtually identical, even to the point where I hand
select crystal filters for equal group delay change over the filter
passband. Every oscillator in the receiver system is common to both
receivers. I'm aware of only one commercially available amateur receiver
that does true stereo diversity, the Elecraft K3. I currently use an
Elecraft K3 since it is the only system that phase-locks two identical
receivers, it interfaces a good transmitter with the receivers, and is a
modern stable design with accurate frequency readout."

"There are articles describing how to electronically lock the receiver
tuning of the FT1000D (and other receivers) so the sub-receiver tracks the
main receiver. This does somewhat work in the FT1000, because the
oscillators share a common time base. The main problem with the FT1000 is
the second receiver isn't a very good receiver, the filters do not match,
the AGC does not match, and phase shift through the receivers (especially as
the signal moves off the filter center) is not at all similar.

I had similar disappointment with the Orion system.

To the best of my knowledge the K3 Elecraft is the only receiver that has
absolutely identical receivers that share one common reference system. That
is what I have switched to now."

I thought some of you might be interested to see what two of the
best low band DXers thought about their K3s.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 Utility settings for CW filters

2011-01-04 Thread Arie Kleingeld PA3A
Dick,

To come up with a optimal (?) setting I worked as follows:

Connected the elecraft XG-2 generator, 40m, S9 setting.
Set the K3 AGC to off and the display to dBV
Set Mode to cw, tuned on exact spot freq.

All frequency offsetsfor the filters were set as indicated (have 2.7,
2.1, 400 and 200) and checked. Worked with these setting for the past 2
years and worked just as expected.

Now for setting the filter gains:
I tried to achieve a simular dBV reading for all filters in this set-up.
I tuned around the spot freq for max dBV readout.
The K3 came up with +5dBV with enough room above and under this level
for the 2.7 filter.
I used that as a reference.
Then switched in the different filters and tried to compensate the loss
in dBV.

My settings for the filters are now (for all filters around a +5dBV
reading):
2.7k 0dB
2.1k 3dB
400 7 dB
200 8 dB (200Hz is still 2dB short of the 2.7k level)

Ofcourse the dBV readout may differ with bandwidth (by definition) but I
can clearly hear the difference in level. Not sure how much I need to
compensate this measurement for bandwidth when using the XG2. at S9 level.

Has someone measured it like this?

I know that the K3 agc or my manual RF will compensate it all but I am
trying to understand a few things and why it is a setting in the K3.

Help and guiding will be much appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] Curious phenomenon with doublet on 80m

2011-01-04 Thread Cady, Fred

Hi,
I had a similar problem last year in ARRL SS where the power output
jumped around. Gary suggested doing the power calibration again. I had
little trouble getting it done in the Utility but doing it manually got
things settled down again. I'm not sure that this fixed whatever the
problem was (why did the calibration have to be done again) but it fixed
the symptoms as it hasn't done it again. Well maybe it did it a bit once
or twice at C6AKX this year.
Dunno. Try it.

Hi Chen,

I did connect dummy load tonight. With the dummy load the SWR at the
problematic region is fine, but I see different symptom. When I activate
tune everywhere else I see on the display: top line "1.0-1", bottom line
"30 W". Which corresponds to my tuning power. Both lines are stable and
the power meter shows accurate 30W or so. At the problematic region the
top line alternates between "1.0-1" and "--" and the bottom line reading
is very unstable - the power jumps randomly from 18W to 48W, so is the
reading of wattmeter - it is also unstable. The returned power stays
pretty low though.
The meter bars on K3 also unstable. The SWR shows one bar and it is
blinking fast. The RF is jumping randomly.
I do not have presently neither VNA nor Antenna Analyzer. I guess though
that use of dummy load pretty much exonerates antenna or tuner. The
dummy load is just one big resistor with very low reactance.

Hi Igor,

You are correct that you should try to see if the K3 will work properly
into a dummy load at 3504 kHz.

Do you have an Antenna Analyzer or VNA?

If so, I would suggest tuning the MFJ to match the Kenwood rigs, then
remove the rigs from the tuner and use to antenna analyzer to look into
the MFJ's Tx connector instead of connecting the K3. The impedance that
you read on the analyzer might give a clue as to why the K3 can't work
into it.

[Elecraft] K3 Curious phenomenon with doublet on 80m

2011-01-04 Thread Wayne Adams
"and the bottom line reading is very
unstable - the power jumps randomly from 18W to 48W, so is the reading of
wattmeter - it is also unstable. The returned power stays pretty low though.
The meter bars on K3 also unstable. The SWR shows one bar and it is blinking
fast. The RF is jumping randomly."

In November the power and SWR on my K3 were unstable 160M to 30M but perfect
with a dummy load. After much give and take with the great Elecraft support
staff, and even trying a new 10W PA unit, the problem turned out to be all
my fault.

I was using a long pair of wires from the manually tuned remote tuner across
the apartment hooked to the straight key so I could fire up the rig at the
tuner, then fine tune the tuner. The rig worked fine into a dummy load, but
not when connected to an antenna.

Turns out those 2 long wires were picking up a lot of RF and feeding it into
the Key Jack causing the problem.

What I should of done is test the rig with only the coax and power
connected. That would have shown the problem right away.

Re: [Elecraft] KDSP2 - Now What Have I Done?

2011-01-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Ken,

Yes, the KSP2 menu entries are a litle bit clumsy, but if you follow the
directions you can get it done. I know you will hae to fumble your way
through them 3 times before it seems OK.

Specifically, to get CF1 back to the LOPASS setting, Tap DISPLAY to
bring up the KDSP2 menu - the first letter of the displayed menu is the
mode, and the number is the filter. If not correct for the filter you
wish to change, tap MODE or press AFIL until it is correct -- yeah, I
know, you have to tap DISPLAY each time you want to check it, the DSP
menu is not "sticky".

OK, so you have C1 nr nt on the display - hold the RCL button to move to
the next menu. You should see something like C.1 .60 .80 on the
display. Note the position of the blinking dot - that is the parameter
that may be changed by tapping the BAND+ or BAND- buttons. To move the
blinking dot to the other parameter, hold the STORE button.

In the case of the CW display, the first number is the center frequency,
and the second is the width. To get the LPASS filter in CW, increase
both the center frequency and the width to their respective maximums.
