Re: [Elecraft] P3 and averaging - dillemma or no problem?
I have raised this issue with Alan (N1AL), on SSB signals below about S9 they average out to little more than a few dB above the noise floor yet look quite good with the peak enabled. Like you suggest a peak facility where the reading decays after a few seconds would be very useful, in addition when peak is enabled the yellow trace loses it's averaging and is visually very distracting... I would prefer the trace to still be smoothed by averaging when displaying peak or perhaps even better would be to turn off the normal yellow trace when peak with a decay is selected? 73 Dave, G4AON Ignacy wrote: So one question is what to do with P3 that shows less with averaging? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] P3 VFO B Tracking
Maybe a better explanation would help :- OK here's the senario. VFO A Main run VFO on say RTTY contest, want to tune to find multi's with VFO B but using a narrow display width on the P3 (ie 25khz), VFO B is out of the display very quickly. Now if you could track the frequency of VFO B on the panadapter I could see upto 200khz (+ or - 100khz of VFO A) with VFO B. So in essence I know the P3 takes the IF from VFO A but at 200khz bandwidth you could track at a high resolution (narrow frequency, say + or - 12khz) of the VFO B frequency if it allowed us to track with the VFO B frequency. For me this would be very useful on single op and Big nob Little nob operation (2 operators) as my whole system is set up for the sub VFO to be the multi chaser and the main VFO for running. So can this be done or is it a please mr elecraft add this function to the P3? This comming weekend is BARTG RTTY and I'd love to use it this way ??? Re: [Elecraft] Problems with HRD, Windows 7 and the old Serial converter cable using the PROLIFIC chip set
I have a similar problem with my old Prolific chip based usb/serial cable. It worked fine on my XP computer. The driver loads without issue on my new Windows 7 computer and creates a virtual serial port and recognizes and installs the adapter when I plug it in, but in my case, I am unable to connect to the K3 utility (haven't tried anything else). I have not been able to resolve the issue with the latest drivers from Prolific or from the driver on the Elecraft download page. I have been using an old XP laptop to configure and do firmware upgrades. There also is no baseline jumping or peak/averaging which has to be fooled with. KISS. Actually it is KICS for keep it cheap and simple. It is easy to recognize RTTY signals and also gaps where one can CQ. The real problem is in using the K3, i.e. switching of TX between A/B/SPLIT/UNSPLIT without messing up. One would almost have to use A/B but that would would put the subrx and panadapter on the old A frequency. 73 de Brian/K3KO On 1/17/2011 12:04, James Balls wrote: Maybe a better explanation would help :- OK here's the senario. Re: [Elecraft] K2 speaker/headphones switching.
Chris, In all probability, the little plastic lever which operates the switch inside the headphone jack has broken. It usually fails with no speaker, but it can fail either way. It is a bit of a pain, but you can shut off the speaker by plugging an empty jack into the external speaker jack on the back. To replace the headphone jack, remove the Control Board and the Front panel assembly and the jack is readily accessible on the RF Board. If you do not know how to get those boards out, I can help, just ask. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/17/2011 12:28 PM, Christopher Kimball wrote: Just bought a new K2 #4913. I was reading W8JI's article http://www.w8ji.com/what_causes_clicks.htm but see that the advice in it (use a narrower filter than an SSB filter for transmitting CW) conflicts with the K3 manual, which says: Rotate VFO A to select a CW transmit filter (2.7 or 2.8 kHz). Re: [Elecraft] [K3] CW transmit filter bandwith
Graham, Tom W8JI was dealing with analog transceivers when that was written. The K3 generates the signal digitally in the DSP portion of the transceiver, so many of those old rules of thumb for analog radios do not apply to the K3. As Guy has said many times on this reflector, This is not your grandaddy's analog radio. A properly operating K3 does not have key clicks and its transmit IMD is very good. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/17/2011 1:09 PM, Graham Smith wrote: I was reading W8JI's article http://www.w8ji.com/what_causes_clicks.htm but see that the advice in it (use a narrower filter than an SSB filter for transmitting CW) conflicts with the K3 manual, which says: Rotate VFO A to select a CW transmit filter (2.7 or 2.8 kHz). Re: [Elecraft] [K3] CW transmit filter bandwith
I am wondering why a narrow filter can cause key clicks? One cause is related to the placement of the CW frequency in relation to the filter passband. If skewed to the edge of a sharp filter, a severely distorted waveform will develop. A CW waveform is a quasi square wave and replication accuracy is dependent on a linear-phase response. [Elecraft] K3/K144XV/P3 Signal Strength Readings
Having calibrated the K3 S meter and the P3 display with my XG2, I have 50 microvolts equal to S9 and -73dbm (whether or not the preamp is on). However, on 2m (K144XV) there is a discrepancy between the K3 S meter and the P3. I believe Alan has told us on the reflector that on 2m S9 on the P3 is -93dbm in accordance with the IARU standard, but I also believe that when using the K144XV the K3 S meter still regards S9 as -73dbm which is different by a factor of 10. Consequently K3 S meter readings are lower on 2m than they should be. Today, for example, I had a 2m qso where the two stations I was working were about S7 on the P3 but S3/4 on the K3 S meter. Re: [Elecraft] P3 S meter variance
My K3 S-meter and P-3 show identical S-9/S-3 readings at 50 uV and 1uV with an XG-2 on 40M. Sideband and particularly band noise are different as noted in previous posts for obvious reasons. If your readings are miles apart, time to check calibration of both units. I went through the calibration procedure of the K3 and P3 long before the change to S-meter scales and I find that the calibration of the P3 held when shifting to S-meter scaling. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] CW transmit filter bandwith
Probably the biggest variant in how to think about this is that in an analog transmitter you start with a badly flawed signal which needs to be cleaned up. The filter attenuates sideband energy (clicks) from a waveform which was already distorted at the point where the RF was keyed. In the K3 and any other digital radio using this scheme, a perfect keying form is created in firmware by numeric means, and the TX digital to analog converter creates a pristine CW signal from that stream of numbers, which can only be messed up, not improved. Therefore the skirts of the filter are set away from the CW, using the SSB TX filter, to prevent any distortion of what STARTED OUT clean. This numeric waveform has the advantage of being able to have its purity improved in firmware. In the analog radio this is a design and manufacturing change. W8JI's celebrated fix for the ghastly clicks in the FT1000MP changed keying constants and delays in each INDIVIDUAL MP across a string of circuits so that what emerged had as little clicks as possible. It was not so much a design change as a value change that affected the TX string switching waveforms, and it varied by rig because the values changed were set in the MP with plus and minus fifty percent cheep components. The K2's elegant click fix in early years addressed a single keying waveform problem in a single stage. But neither the JI-fixed MP or the current K2, however good as they are, can compete with the digital solution. 73, Guy. This unit is brand new, essentially never used since completed, with the debug and final alignment performed by Don Wilhelm (W3FPR). Also comes with a small MFJ hand mic that works well with it. The total cost of this package is $1086.75. I would like to get $825 plus shipping. (Selling because I'm probably going to be forced into retirement in the next 30 days.) Hi Don group, Yes, I have some test gear. I will run a test next weekend once I get back from my next business trip. 73 -- John Hoaglun NG0R - EN25 http://www.hoaglun.com On Sun, 2011-01-16 at 21:07 -0500, Don Wilhelm wrote: John, power. If you do not have an oscilloscope, do you have a peak reading wattmeter? What does that meter say about the SSB peak power? What I am trying to discover is whether the problem is related to the base K2 or some problem with the transverters. Taking the transverters out of the picture and getting a reading on the behavior of the K2 on 40 meters will be revealing. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Power puzzlement
I get about 4.5mA with my K3/100 powered off. Assuming you've checked the obvious (i.e. that there's nothing else connected to the power supply), is it possible your ammeter is defective or needs new batteries? 73 -- Joe KB8AP On Jan 17, 2011, at 4:12 PM, Ralph Parker wrote: I thought I'd check to see how much current my K3/100 draws under various operating condx (for battery powered QRP portable operation, etc.). Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power puzzlement
I get about 4.5mA with my K3/100 powered off... I would have expected something similar, if not zero. I always wondered why I heard a 'pop' from the speaker (audio amp?) when I plugged the K3 in with the power off. Could be related - a leaky cap charging? Assuming you've checked the obvious (...nothing else connected to the p/s) Yep. The meter (Watt's Up) is in the 13.8v line in series with the K3. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power puzzlement
I believe the meter you are trying to use is intended for AC powerline measurements. No telling what it will do with DC. I expect that if you repeat the measurement using a DVM in a DC current mode you will get a more meaningful result. 73 Craig AC0DS Assuming you've checked the obvious (...nothing else connected to the p/s) Yep. [Elecraft] [K2] Two mic cables into K2
After growing tired of plugging/unplugging my SignaLink cable and hand mic when switching from digital modes to SSB, I'm trying to find a more elegant solution. I'd like a commercial product, however, the MFJ mic switches seem to get so-so reviews and the NCS Multi-Switch seems way overkill for this. Perhaps a home-brewed Y-Cable might work? Just curious what other have come up with to plug two mics into the K2. 73 N5BCN - Brian - K2 #6800 KSB2 KAT2 KIO2 K160RX KNB2 -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K2-Two-mic-cables-into-K2-tp5934650p5934650.html Sent from the [K2] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
