[Elecraft] New product opportunity

2011-11-23 Thread Ian Maude
With the upcoming release of the KAT500, I was thinking that the K-line
would look slightly asymmetrical with the tuner sat on top of either the K3
or the Amp. So, how about a matching unit to the KAT500 to balance it all
up? It could house a series of forward facing buttons which could be band
stacking registers, extra macro keys etc? How about it guys?

Re: [Elecraft] Stereo phone help

2011-11-23 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Rick & Joe,

Rick, to the best of my knowledge, the CONFIG:SPKRS affects the rear speaker
jack and not the rear phone jack. The rear phone jack is always stereo. Of
course, I suppose it might be possible that Joe has accidentally plugged his
head phones into the rear speaker jack by mistake.

Joe, another config variable that affects what you hear in your headphones
is CONFIG: L-MIX-R. Barring a hardware failure on the rear phone jack it
almost sounds like this variable is set to B - A or B - AB and there is
nothing to be heard from the sub receiver. Maybe the sub RF gain or volume
has been turned all the way down. (tip: this variable is located
alphabetically by the word "MIX" and can be found after MIC BIN).

73,
Mike K2MK

Did you set CONFIG:SPKRS to 2?

I have my phones plugged into the front phones connector ( of course using
an 1/8 to 1/4 stereo adapter) I get VFO A in left ear and VFO B in right ear
as it should be. If I unplug the headphones from the front jack and plug
them into the rear stereo phones jack I get VFO A in RIGHT ear and nothing
in left ear. Both cases I am using [SUB] [SPLIT] in fact I do not change
any settings. I thought the two jacks were in parallel. Now what am I
missing?

Correct, Bert. Besides, I think most of us were using irons with wood burning

And, fire extinguishers were probably more necessary with the wood burning
kits! ;o)

[Elecraft] CAT command of K3 VOX??

2011-11-23 Thread tomb18
I am attempting to use CAT commands to program the K3 to go into something I
call remote or local mode (using HRD with macros assigned to buttons)

Basically, remote mode switches the MIC to Line in and sets the compression
to 0. What is missing is to set PTT.

Local mode, switches MIC to front panel and sets compression to 15. What is
missing is to set VOX.

Now I can use the SWH09 command but this is a toggle. It works, but if I
was to inadvertently press one Remote or Local twice in a row, then the VOX
gets switched again and this will lead to an indeterminate state where I
won't know what is happening. As I am using the SignaLink USB interface, it
uses hardware PTT and this can occur when VOX is enabled, which may cause
some issues.

Now, it seems that the VX command is only a Get. Can anyone suggest a work
around?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] CAT command of K3 VOX??

2011-11-23 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Do you have the ability to send a GET command and query the result? Then you
could use the VX getter to know what state you're in and issue SWH09 only if
you need to.

I have to do this quite a bit in the K3 Utility for K3 state that has only
toggles.

Our target is still $799 for the basic 160-6 meter/10 watt/all-mode

were based on cost of parts in May, and everything is going up
industry-wide, so it's possible prices may change by the time we start

[Elecraft] K2 - reference oscillator will not go to 4000.000 kHz.

2011-11-23 Thread Dan Arbogast
Pardon me if this is an old topic, but I could not find anything relevant
to this with an archive search.

I have been enjoying my K2 for about a year but have always known the freq
calibration was off by about 1-2 KHz and have just lived with it by
compensating accordingly. Now that I have a XG3 I want to get the K2 tuned
up as best as possible, which means I'm revisiting the freq calibration
problem again.

When adjusting C22 for 4000.000 KHz I find it will will never actually
reach 4000.000 and seems to bottom out slightly on the high side, maybe 1
KHz or so high. Any ideas on where to look or how I may address this
problem?

Thanks!

Re: [Elecraft] Contesting use

2011-11-23 Thread Doug Turnbull
Hi All,
I am not replying specifically to Don's post but I do wonder if there
could not be too many buttons on such a pod especially for a contest where
one wants to keep it simple. Yes tuning is nice. Access to CW/DVK
memories very helpful and perhaps isolate on the pod access to some Macros
could help. I have an OII and really miss the Pod. The OII will be sold
as there are now two K3s in this shack. I had stopped bothering the good
Elecraft people about this pet desire but hell you guys started it. The
Pod for me is most useful for contesting. It allows one to access certain
controls without possibly hitting others in the heat of the battle. The K3
buttons are crowded as are the OII buttons and they are not always in a
position which is easy to hit. SO I would dearly like to see a pod which I
would position next to my keyboard. Yes I do use WinTest and MicroKeyer II
so to some large degree my problem is sorted but I would still like to be
able to access the K3 memories with more ease.

The tuning feature can be nice if you are leaning back in an easy chair
reading the mail.

Well Elecraft is pretty supper and I guess one can get to be too
demanding. Thanks to those who allowed me to blow my horn one more time
and now back into the box.

Re: [Elecraft] CAT command of K3 VOX??

2011-11-23 Thread tomb18
I thought you couldn't do that inn the k3 utility. I guess I could program a
macro and then just call this from HRD. I can't find any documentation on
HRD programming languages.

Perhaps I don't even need to switch to PTT and back. From the manual it
says that even if you VOX the PTT is active. If this is the case, then the
signalink will take care of this for me.

You can't do this with the macros. The K3 Utility itself has a lot of code
that queries the radio and follows different paths based on the rig's
responses.

Re: [Elecraft] Problem after KPA100UPKT upgrade

2011-11-23 Thread Don Wilhelm
Sam,

Sorry for the delayed response, it has been a busy day and have not had
a chance to get to my email.

OK, the voltages on D11 seem out of "wack" - so check the tinning of L16
leads, the soldering of RFC4 and D11.

Once you get proper RX voltages on D11, try the TX diode voltages if it
still does not work.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - reference oscillator will not go to 4000.000 kHz.

2011-11-23 Thread Don Wilhelm
Dan,

Don't worry about getting the 4 MHz reference exactly to 4 MHz - it is
"not necessarily so".
Use the N6KR method to set C22 accurately.. Go to my website
www.w3fpr.com and look at the K2 Dial Calibration article to describe
the complete sequence.

[Elecraft] For info Purposes

2011-11-23 Thread Robert Garceau
I just returned from my 2nd trip to St.Croix, Virgin Islands. I brought my
K3 along as a guest.

The K3 was with me on the plane and stored under the seat in front of me in
a nice bag purchased from Rose Kopp (N7HKW).

I brought the radio with me last year and Murphy paid a visit.

The tower at the station that I was using was stuck at 15 feet and the A3S
was stuck on Europe.

Nevertheless, I did make some QSO's on CW, SSB and RTTY.

I was using the station of NP2N.

This year Murphy struck in a different way. I arrived on Thursday, Nov. 3rd
and promptly set got on 10 meters and had a great run into the U.S. and JA
on SSB. I was getting great reports. Loud, 59 plus. I was in heaven.

The tower and rotor had been repaired, so I was FB to operate.

After my nice run on 10, I noticed that I was only putting out 27 watts.

I have a KPA500 at home, which I use and apparently the K3 still remembered
the setting from back home, as it was suppose to.

Then I attempted to up the power to 100 watts and the K3 shut down. I
experimented and the best I could do was somewhere between 30 and 40 watts
depending on band/mode. That's when I received the visit from Murphy. The
power supply (20 amps) in the shack (I did not take one with me) was not
working properly. We tried another PS and had the same problem.

Anyway, with only 30 watts max, I made 1174 QSO's on CW, SSB and RTTY. I did
receive a variety of signal reports. Five nine plus were some of the reports
that I received from Europe. The station is on a hill and when I stand on
the porch, I can see ocean to the north and northeast. From some stations in
England, Finland and further north, I was not so strong. This was on 10 and
15. I operated strictly split.

Obviously, I like the K3. And the old saying that you don't need a ton of
power to work the world is very true. When I got back home, I hooked
everything up and I'm back up to 100 watts again.

Have a nice Thanksgiving, Bob, W1EQ (KP2/W1EQ)

K3, KPA 500 and P3 on order ETA 12/1.

[Elecraft] wattage on k3 vs kpa500

2011-11-23 Thread Richard
Hi
Maybe some one can answer this. I set my k3 to 60 watts and measure 60
watts on my kpa500 meter with the amp in standby trnsmitting into a dummy load.
When I switch to an antenna with a 3:1 swr the k3 still says 60 watts but the
kpa500 now reads 80 watts with the amp still in standby. So which is
correct or neither ?
Thanks Richard

Re: [Elecraft] wattage on k3 vs kpa500

2011-11-23 Thread Rick Bates
Here's my take:

Most if not all RF power meters will only be accurate at a 1:1 SWR (when
there is resonance). The actual power can more accurately determined by
reading the voltage and current and then only if the amp efficiency is
known.

It's likely that neither the K3 or KPA500 meter is entirely accurate; the K3
would sense the 'bad' SWR and start a power foldback and the amp is a random
location on the feedline away with the mismatch causing a sensing error.
(Adding another random feed length would likely give a different reading.)

>From memory, at 3:1 you have approximately a 25% 'reflection'. I didn't do
the math to verify, but in this case happens to be the same as shown as
added power in the KPA500. Perhaps someone else can add more.

The K3 is producing the power and should be the more accurate reading.
However, an improvement of 3:1 should be obtained before either the K3 or
the more importantly the KPA500 applies any significant power (in fact the
amp will 'complain' and switch to standby at ~2.1:1). That higher SWR in
the real world comes back as heat, which is bad and shortens the life
expectancy of the final(s).

Make sense?
