Re: [Elecraft] Subject: KX3 CW from computer
Dave, OK, well I guess there are many different types of sw that generate CW. The program I use allows you to write scripts for the Function Keys on a computer or to merely type from the keyboard real-time. It was written to support CW on eme so it has built in TR programmable delay times and separate control of PTT and KEY, since one does not want to hot switch 1kW at 1296 MHz! So I see the opinions being given coming from total different perspectives (some are using HF loggers, some contesting sw, some HRD or other radio sw, some are using eme digital sw. Each is working a little differently so a solution that fits all may not exist. 73, Ed - KL7UW -- Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2012 10:08:06 -0700 From: David Gilbert xda...@cis-broadband.com Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Subject: KX3 CW from computer To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: 4f5e2d76@cis-broadband.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Instant change over to the paddle then the keyboard is not possible, but why would one do that? The need to quickly jump in with the paddle happens often enough in contesting to make that a pretty important capability. Most contest loggers have a limited number of CW macros available and they won't cover everything. Temporarily switching to keyboard CW is possible but for me at least is clumsier than just moving my hand to the paddle. 73, Dave AB7E 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 == BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 50-1.1kw?, 144-1.4kw, 432-QRT, 1296-?, 3400-? [Elecraft] K3: RF Calibration / RF output
I obtained a brand-new calibrated 25H element for my Bird43 power meter, today. I checked power out on my K3/10 set to 12.0w. 80m = 11w 40m = 11w 20m = 11.5w 15m = 11.5w 10m = 11.5w all measurements into a Bird 25w coaxial termination I assume running the Tx gain calib. at 5w will result in adjusting the upper end of power output to 12.0w. Or is the power that I am seeing the max available? I had previously measured output at 15w with my 100H element but this is apparently in error. The 100H element is old so probably out of calibration and accuracy at 15% full scale is not that good, anyway. I tested at 5.0w at 28 MHz comparing the reading using the 25H element with a 5A element and got exactly the same reading. 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 == BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 50-1.1kw?, 144-1.4kw, 432-QRT, 1296-?, 3400-? Re: [Elecraft] FW: P3 Windows Utility Program 1.12.3.11
Haven't received my shipping notice yet from Elecraft on the P3SVGA, but I have loaded FW 1.11 into the P3. (Did this with the old utility before I realized there was a new one out.) and the P3 load went just fine even with the old utility. However as expected, it would not recognize the new baud rates until after I D/L the new utility. In the new utility, the screen capture/save file works okay for me even at 115.200. I was able to save it to desktop or any other directory on the computer I tried. I am, however, running all this on an old Dell 8100 Pentium IV running Windows XP Pro. The RS-232 chain is pretty short, 2' from the computer to the P3 using the cables supplied by Elecraft for computer-P3-K3. I use Scott, N3FJP's logging programs. He doesn't support 115.2K but does have 57.6K in it (calls it 56 but it works just fine.) Screen capture is certainly a heck of a lot faster at 115.2 than 38.4 - ;) but it does appear to be jerky on the computer screen - that's just windows multi-tasking other stuff at the same time, I'm sure. Due to the baud rate limit of 57.6K in my loggers, think I'll just set it there and leave it at that. Now, maybe Wayne will eventually get around to changing the K3 itself to show the higher baud rates (unless the P3 is doing a buffer and translating the RS232 speeds down to 38.4 for the K3). Jim - W0EB I think now it's related to operating at 115,200 bps. I had a few flakey results from time to time at that speed as well. I use an ABCD switch and about 15 feet of RS-232 jumper cables between my PC with an old KUSB USB to Serial adapter and the various Elecraft devices. It's been solid up to 57,600 but a little dodgy at 115,200. 73 de Dick, K6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KX3 and Data modes
I have not had any experience using data modes in low power radios. Will the KX3 be nearly as effective using data modes as it will be using CW? From what I read in the preliminary manual I guess it is possible to connect a portable PC with data software to use the data modes in addition to the self-contained capability. I would assume SSB to be the least effective mode of operation among the KX3 modes. Dave, for miles-per-watt the king of the hill is JT-65HF. (However, it's not a whole lot of fun IMHO) Theoretically one can communicate with a signal path about 6 db weaker than needed for CW. PSK and CW are about on a par theoretically. For SSB the signal path has to be about 9 db better than for CW or PSK. Of course, the above applies to any radio, KX3 or otherwise, QRP or QRO. Many hams have great fun using SSB with low-power radios. I guess I come from the other universe. Of the thousands of QRP contacts I've made, only one was on SSB. It was with Martti, OH2BH, who patiently spent about 3 minutes digging to get my call, one letter at a time. After that one I went back to CW. I received my K3 today at 8:00am. I took and hooked my laptop up to it and saved the new configuration file. I thought I would try it as it came from the factory. I was on 30 meters and heard a cw signal. I don't know much about cw, between cw and a hole in the ground, I could tell you which one is the hole. lol I tuned in the cw signal and it was w5vyy calling cq. okay nervous about never having a cw contact I started typing in my untility programs and called him. He responded on the first call. Wow. I had a nice qso with him and he said my signal sounded great. This is with the same antenna that my kenwood would not tune. The k3 tuned it to a 1 to 1 first try. Now I have a lot of learning and exploring to do. I just wanted to thank the Elecraft bunch and especially Dale for helping me get my order and making such a great product. Got to jump off of here and get back to playing radio. Re: [Elecraft] Subject: KX3 CW from computer
It looks like there's a good opportunity here for a KX3 accessory that Elecraft or some third party could make: a custom serial cable that plugs into a serial port at the PC and terminates in plugs for PTT and key at the KX3. The required circuitry could be built into the connector shell. You should be able to steal enough juice from the RS232 port to power it all. It'd be really neat if SMT versions of the K1EL chips were available. Then a WinKeyer could be built into a cable. Re: [Elecraft] P3 baud rates
Try the P3 RS-232 menu selection and the firmware release notes file available from the P3 Utility Help menu describes the new firmware version changes. The new firmware version and P3 Utility add two new speeds, 57,600 and 115,200 bps. The P3 Utility tries all the baud rates and settles on the one it gets responses for, as it always has. 115,200 may be a bit dicey for image transfers and it doesn't work at all for firmware load. I can't transfer images at 115,200 bps reliably here. Others are having difficulty transferring a full image. Consider 115,200 experimental for now, we're debating its value. Firmware load for the SVGA and FPGA may occur at 38400 or 57600 bps. If the P3 is set to 57600 before starting firmware load, the P3 MCU is loaded at 38400 bps and the SVGA and FPGA are loaded at 57,600 bps. It's a little faster, but not a lot faster. 115,200 isn't working for firmware load, so the P3 Utility doesn't even try. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of n...@n5ge.com Sent: Tuesday, March 13, 2012 9:15 AM To: 'Elecraft Reflector' Subject: [Elecraft] P3 baud rates I can't find the installation instructions for the P3SVGA on the web site. At the moment, the P3 can use these higher baud rates to more quickly send bitmap screen captures to the host computer. The link between P3 and K3 maxes out at 38400 though. 73, matt W6NIA On Tue, 13 Mar 2012 11:14:32 -0500, you wrote: I can't find the installation instructions for the P3SVGA on the web site. [Elecraft] KX3 and Data modes
Regarding the effectivity of the KX3 on SSB, I can relate the effectivity of the K3/10 on SSB (equivalent RF power). I previously thought I was running about 15w on 20m but with a new element for my Bird43 I know that is was actually 11.5w. CW benefits from the effective reduction in bandwidth (50-Hz) that many top CW ops exhibit which offers up to 17 dB advantage. Say you have an average of 250-Hz and that advantage is 10-dB. JT65 has a theoretical 30-dB advantage and practically one could say 26 dB. Other narrow-band digital modes should offer increased performance, also. QRSS does by the fact the signal is averaged over long time periods. I have been checking into the Elecraft SSB Net fairly regularly and being copied by Phil, NS7P who is 1620 miles from me. I run an old Hygain TH3mk4 tribander at 50-foot which helps. Now I have a new HF amp which I have been running at 200w but can run up to 270w with 11.5w drive. That was necessary to make it last weekend during the solar flare. 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 == BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 50-1.1kw?, 144-1.4kw, 432-QRT, 1296-?, 3400-? Re: [Elecraft] K3: RF Calibration / RF output
Bill, The 25H element was special-ordered thru Radiodan W7RF mailto:rfpo...@radiodan.comrfpo...@radiodan.com, who has the ability to run NBS traceable calibration, so with no better reference, I am taking the readings on the new element as accurate (and my standard for HF). A little late to save me money on Bird elements as have 16 ranging from 5w to 2500w, and HF to 1800-MHz. If I had the cash it would be nice to send meter and elements to Dan for calibration. A note that may be of interest: I ran the wattmeter calibration on my K3 and setting 5w to accurately output 5w as indicated by the Bird 25H required changing my WTMR LP setting from 70 to 50. I then ran the Transmit Gain Calibration and have 12.5w indicated output from 160m-10m. On 6m the 25H is out of freq. range so reads low, but I have both a 5A and 50A element that indicates I'm getting close to 8w. I will be interested to see what the output of my new 300w amp runs at these levels (previously getting 270w with 11.5w; Bird 500H). I was getting 125w out on 6m with my Mirage A1015G. The Harris Platinum Amp should provide 10-dB (800w) on 6m. -- Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2012 04:39:11 -0700 (PDT) From: Bill W4ZV btipp...@alum.mit.edu Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3: RF Calibration / RF output To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: 1331638751450-7368184.p...@n2.nabble.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-asci Edward R. Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 or KX3 with all the options?
I don't have, nor have seen, the KX3. But from what I read it looks more like competition for the K2. In the basic 10W version (ie without a 100W external PA) the KX3 looks good to take with you on holiday, camping trips etc. A KX3 will take up a lot less space in your hand luggage than the K2 and offers quite a lot in that package too. On the other hand, the K3 is a very capable contest, DXpedition and shack system radio with a lot of interfacing capability and a darn good receiver too. I have a nearly fully loaded K3 and bought the basic K3/100 back in 2007. I don't see anything competing with the K3, when you add in the superb 2nd receiver, P3 panadapter and matching KPA500 amp you have a line up that is hard to beat for use at home or on serious DX trips. With my K3 I have a few extras added externally, such as a ferrite splitter on the RF IN/OUT to give a 3rd receive capability with a Perseus SDR (mostly used with CW Skimmer since getting the K3 2nd RX), an SCS PTC-IIex Pactor/Amtor modem with switching of the K3 line audio in/out between sound card (fldigi) and the SCS modem (how many other ham transceivers offer a transformer isolated line in/out?), plus of course the P3 that doesn't need a computer to use. Compared to the above setup, I just don't see the KX3 competing in the shack at home... Your requirements may be different. 73 Dave, G4AON --- This question has been going around in my head and I would like some feedback from Elecraft owners for I have never had any Elecraft radio equipment. David, I don't have a KX3, but I do have a K3, a TS-480, a TS-850SAT and a TS-440. Â I depends on what you want to do. Â If you want to set up a base station for general purpose operation and DX I would buy the K3/100 and if possible include the second receiver and the KAT-3. Â If your primary desire is mobile and or back packing you will be better served by the KX3. Â (I have my TS-480SAT in my truck and it is the closest thing to the KX3 that I know. Â I bought it before the KX3 was announced.) Â Every one of these rigs is a great choice for its day, but the K3 and probably the KX3 are better choices for today. (I say probably for the KX3 because I have never laid hands on one, just looked at the pictures and specs.) Â Unfortunately, there is no rig that is best for everything, I would guess that is why Elecraft sells five different transceivers and there are buyers for each one of them. Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 or KX3 with all the options?
A tuff question. First, what are you going to so with the radio? Second, the cost will most definately NOT be the same. The K3 as a full featured contest radio capable of suporting multi roofing filters, has a built-in 100 W PA and an ATU with two ant outputs/inputs. It can be configfured with a second rec of equal spec to the main reciever. It has easy out to computer for many digital modes, has band decoding and easy connection to powerful linear amps for up to legal limit output. The K3 and KX3 have many similar features, and share operational proceeddures, but they are not the same radio. The items I listed in the above paragraph are things the K3 has that the KX3 will not have. These are important to many users. Now, the KX3 will have a builtin 10 W PA, and a 20 W ATU. And it will sport internal batteries, it weighs but 16-20 oz, supports attached paddles/key, has I/Q output for direct input to soundcard for SDR recieve and panadapter use. It will have a very nice 100 external amp with available ATU for remote mounting as in a mobile ienvironment. These are but some of the things a KX3 will have that the K3 will not have. If you want the best base station for DX and contesting, with a sub-rec, great filtering and want to drive a legal limit amp, get a K3. However, if you are more likely to want to travel with a small, almost pocket sized radio and operate from the trail or summit and not carry a big battery and enjoy QRP, then the KX3 is right up your alley. Now, all that being said, you could probably get a fully loaded KX3 for around $2000 (with external amp and ATU when available). Or you can get a 100W K3 with out the ATU for about the same price. If this is what you want, take your choice, but if you buy the K3, you can expand it as your needs(wants) grow. OR, you can do what a lot of us are doing, and buy them both. They are two different radios and many of us enjoy different aspects of the hobby so each will have it's place. I do a lot of outdoor special events, and the KX3 will be perfect, while I still like my K3 for my day to day DXing and contesting. I would not like to have to make the choice of one OR the other. ...bill nr4c On Tue, 13 Mar 2012 13:33:27 -0400, David Stratton wrote: This question has been going around in my head and I would like some feedback from Elecraft owners for I have never had any Elecraft radio equipment. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and Data modes
Since Bird does not advertise a 25H, I don't know what that is and as far as I know they have never made a 25 watt element that is for HF.  They do make a 25A,B,C,D E which cover 25 to 1000 mHz in 5 bands, but the lowest element for HF is the 50H.  A 25H would imply a 25 watt 2-30 mHz element which may have been manufactured during the 70 or more years since the Bird 43 came out in which case the range would be 10.25 to 12.5 watts if the element and meter are in spec.  The current Bird chart states that a 25 watt element is not available.  Willis 'Cookie' Cooke K5EWJ Trustee N5BPS, USS Cavalla, USS Stewart From: Doug Smith d...@w7kf.com To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, March 13, 2012 1:33 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and Data modes I think he stated earlier that he was using a freshly calibrated 25H element. 73, -Doug, W7KF http://www.w7kf.com On 03/13/2012 12:24 PM, WILLIS COOKE wrote: How do you know that the Bird measurement is actually 11.5 watts? The accuracy claimed by Bird for a new element is +/- 5% of full scale. If you have a 50 watt element your reading is between 9 and 14 watts. If you have a 100 watt element it is between 6.5 and 16.5 watts.  Willis 'Cookie' Cooke K5EWJ Trustee N5BPS, USS Cavalla, USS Stewart __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and Data modes
Yes, Ed did make that statement BUT --- The freshly calibrated slug does not make any difference - read and understand the specification correctly - the accuracy is speced at +/- 5% OF FULL SCALE right after calibration. So the error with that slug is 1.25 watts - and that applies anywhere on the scale. A reading of 11.5 watts can be anywhere between 10.25 watts and 12.75 watts. That kind of specification is typical of analog wattmeters - they all have a spec in a percentage of full scale. Many good digital wattmeters have a spec that is a percentage of the reading rather than a percentage of full scale. I have ranted about those facts of wattmeters many times on this reflector. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/13/2012 2:33 PM, Doug Smith wrote: I think he stated earlier that he was using a freshly calibrated 25H element. 73, -Doug, W7KF http://www.w7kf.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Remote rig decision
Additional thoughts: I do not have digital modes (aside from CW) operational yet; it should be possible, but it is low priority for me right now. the forum is here: http://www.remoterig.com/forum/index.php, and there is the yahoo group (not a lot of activity; most seems to be on the forum) as well. (remote...@yahoogroups.com). I should have mentioned that I strongly recommend setting it up on your internal intranet first so that it is convenient to debug, then setting up the IP forwarding for your router at the radio location, etc. and using the internet for the remote. It helps to separate the issues nicely, making debug go faster. 73 de Dave, W5SV On 3/13/12 1:51 PM, David F. Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 or KX3 with all the options?
Just because the KX3 is small and light does not mean it would not be an ideal home rig. Most of the subscribers to this email list appear to be pretty serious, competent, first class operators who are able to take full advantage of the features and abilities of the K3. The other 99.95% of the operators in the world, including me, would not be slowed down or disadvantaged very much with a K1 for QRP CW or a tricked out K2 / 100 watts for a home rig. There is a real difference in price. The KX3 / 10 watts is $900 as a kit and $1,000 ready to go. Compare this to $1,550 $1,750 for a K3 / 10, kit or ready to go. The cost of the 100 watt amp and tuner for the KX3 should be comparable to the 100 watt amp and tuner for the K3. Save $650 by buying the KX3 and lose the opportunity to have a second, independent receiver; have performance numbers that are lower, but not significantly lower; miss out on some other add-ons that may not be all that important; and smile all the way to the bank. Re: [Elecraft] K2 cannot calibrate dial
Hi Mike, Thank you for your invaluable help! After re-setting the C22 to its mid-point position I have done all the basic alignment steps in Part II of the Manual. PLL reference oscillator range, VCO test, VCO alignment and voltage readings, BFO range: all within specified ranges. After CAL FIL and CAL PLL I tuned some stations on 80m and... voila! No RIT needed to zero-beat most SSB stations, carriers of AM stations zero beat at even kHz on both sidebands. Right now I do not need better 4MHz oscillator calibration! 73, Bartek SQ5OBP __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 station hookup question
I am waiting on my K3 kit to arrive (Friday?). While I wait, I am doing a little setup for the K3on my station. My mic is a studio mic so it's always hot. I also feed audio from my PC to theback of the K3 (line in). The computer controls a relay which will key the radio when neededvia the PTT jack on the back of the K3. Now the problem: If the computer keys the rig and feeds audio to it, will the front mic connection still be on? [Elecraft] K3/100 or KX3 with all the options
My radio needs are very modest for I am not a contester, or DXer, or even one who makes a lot of contacts but I do listen quite a bit. I do like to have a fine radio and presently own one - the Kenwood TS-830S. I have no intention of parting with it. As far as modes go I operate HF primarily SSB and PSK31. I am trying to improve my CW ability however I have a problem with CW. Just like some people have mic fright I have CW contact fright. I like CW but I just can't do it and enjoy it. The final bit of information is the fact that my wife hates amateur radio, which causes me to occasionally put my radio in storage. I will digest all the thoughtful comments many of you made and make my decision. Although I do operate from home, you can see that for me perhaps getting away to the local state park or some other place away from home might provide me with the best operating enjoyment. Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA
Hi Bill, We're going to start shipping a 6' 2.1MM power cable with every P3SVGA board ordered. The other end of the cable is bare and can be used to connect the P3 directly to your 12V mains. This should start by tomorrow or the next day. If your SVGA hasn't shipped yet, there'll be one in the box. Anyone who has already received their SVGA board can simply contact the factory and we'll send one out. 73, Paul (n6hz) nr4c wrote It's in the instructions with the board. They did indicate the P3/SVGA could be powered from the K3, but it might shut down suddenly if it drew too much power and the resettable fuse in the K3 would open. It's too easy to crimp another PP and add a M DC connector. The old P3 power cord goes in the 'portable' bag. So far, it's real nice but I think when a contest comes up, I'll add that real estate back to the computer for N1MM, and just use the old P3. Did the installation instructions specifically indicate that the P3 will require a separate power source or was that your decision? I can't find those instructions on the Elecraft webpage. 73, Mike K2MK nr4c wrote Well, it arrived today and I went to work and installed it. Instructions are clear and the installation went well. Board install took about 10 minutes or so. Most time spent making a new power cord for the P3 as the new adapter increases the drain by 200 mA and now exceeds the 500 allowed from the K3 12v out port. Now you must turn on the P3 manually, doesn't seem to be controlled by the K3 anymore. First impressions: Well, I have an old HP monitor, and it works well at 1268X1024. This provides a nice image, sharp and clear. P3 resolution is much better, but no additional features at this time so main advantage is bigger image. I think I like the fill under the trace, gives a better view of the wave shape being displayed. All in all, I like it, but I'm waiting now for more firmware features. Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 or KX3 with all the options
Hi David, No need to stress about CW contacts -- just realise that the only critical thing you need to copy is the callsign. Ideally you'll also get a signal report, name and QTH as well. Of course you can ask for repeats, but consider if it is a casual contact and you miss those, what's the worst thing that could happen? No-one will even know except for you. So, just relax, try and get the basic info if you can, if not, don't worry, and treat everything else as gravy. And remember, you're free to say TNX FER QSO 73 at any time :-) Another way to build confidence might be to use a computer program called Morse Runner. It simulates contest-style QSOs for you. Contesting may not be what you ultimately want to do, but the program will get you used to copying callsigns and signal reports (well, numbers at least). As for K3 vs KX3, both are good options. The TS-830S is a nice radio with plenty of grunt -- do you have any of the optional CW filters for the TS-830S? If so, you already have a pretty good radio for casual home operation, and the KX3 will offer you a portability that you don't have now, plus a chance to play with some fun new things like the I/Q outputs. On the the hand, if you want a nice modern home base station, the K3-line is pretty attractive too. Good luck, let us know which way you finally decide to jump. 73, Matt VK2ACL On 14/03/2012, at 9:44 AM, David Stratton wrote: My radio needs are very modest for I am not a contester, or DXer, or even one who makes a lot of contacts but I do listen quite a bit. Re: [Elecraft] K3 station hookup question
Ken, It all depends. If your connection to line in is for data modes, then no problem - set line in as the MIC SEL entry for DATA modes. OTOH, if you are using line in for voice modes, you will be forced to set MIC + LIN on in the menu, and in that case, both the microphone and Line In will be live. If your setup does not require MIC + LIN, then the 3 audio inputs - FP mic, RP mic and line in are mutually exclusive. So bottom line, the answer to your question depends on your operating needs and you setup. If you do need to use both a microphone and Line in for voice modes, I suggest that you connect a microphone to the soundcard and let the software application sort things out for you. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/13/2012 5:58 PM, Ken KG0WX wrote: I am waiting on my K3 kit to arrive (Friday?). Re: [Elecraft] Make the Feet Stickier
I used that stuff to keep my key from sliding so easily on the desktop. Cut little circles out of the stuff and glued them under each foot pad with a tiny dab of rubber cement so I could peel them off later if needed. Works pretty well, they key stays put a lot better. Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 or KX3 with all the options
Good work! Keep at it. The decoding program may give you some extra confidence, which is great, and it will give you a feel for how operators use CW in practice. However I'd recommend to ditch it as soon as you can, since it is just a distraction to learning the code. Concerning the abbreviations, etc. it is good to be aware of some of the common ones so you don't get thrown too much when they come at you, but you'll pick them up pretty quickly. The following guide is good for beginners and goes through operating procedure and common abbreviations: http://www.netwalk.com/~fsv/CWguide.htm 73, Matt VK2ACL On 14/03/2012, at 11:30 AM, Gerald Manthey wrote: Great advice Matt. I had my first cw contact today. I was nervous but had a program to translate. I was proud when I was done, but had a patient op. What I learned was I need to learn the proper abbreviations to use. I find I want to try more now. On Mar 13, 2012 6:36 PM, Matt Maguire vk2...@gmail.com wrote: Hi David, No need to stress about CW contacts -- just realise that the only critical thing you need to copy is the callsign. Doing that would be best accomplished with the KX3. This is the 3rd K2 I have owned , the first with the KPA100 installed, they are great contest rigs , I love them. 28.000mhz= 55w Max. 28.800 = 50w 24.900 = No Output 21.000 = 35w 18.078 = 25w 14.000 = 35w 10.100 = 60w 7.000 = 70w 3.500 = 75w 1.800 = 5 w I have a lot of Federal Taxes to pay this year , and I need to sell the set, I would rather price it repaired with full -output. Cant spend the dollars to send it for repair. Can anyone assist me with the troubleshooting??? Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 #4670
Byron, I hear your problem, but you do need to isolate it to a KPA100 or a base K2 problem. Disconnect the APP power connector from the KPA100 and power the K2 from the 2.1mm coaxial power connector on the lower read panel. Turn the Power Knob up to about 10 watts and see what the output is on all band. If it is 10 watts or greater, go to the extreme and turn if up to full power and see what the maximum power from the base K2 can be. If the base K2 has good power output, but the KPA100 power out is low, that is a KPA100 problem, but if the base K2 power output is low, the KPA100 may be OK and the base K2 may have a problem. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/13/2012 11:11 PM, BYRON ALLEN wrote: I have been trying to track down a issue , I have a K2/100 (KPA100) with a seperate KAT100 . Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and Data modes
Dave- The digital mode I find most usable and robust is Olivia. It is quite a bit better than PSK31 and sounds great too. MultiPSK is a wonderful free program that has virtually all digital modes. A small netbook would be ideal to pair with the KX-3. 5 watts and a good antenna will be very effective with Olivia. I just have to stop thinking about the KX-3 -and the day will arrive sooner!
