Re: [Elecraft] RX I/Q output planned or thought about for the K3/P3?
Geoff, I suppose the thing I'm trying to get at is a direct I/Q line from the K3... Whether a software update is possible to add this to the current Stereo Line-Out jack (on the back of the K3) or not. At present, there simply *is no hardware* capable of providing a direct I/Q output to the stereo line out jack. Line Out audio is 0 Hz based following the main/sub RX. I doubt the K3 has enough processing power to do a separate 15 KHz to 6 KHz I/Q conversion and even if it did the output bandwidth would be severely limited by the 1st IF (roofing) filters. The P3 certainly has no provision for separate I/Q audio output. Other than the display. the entire P3 electronics would need to be duplicated to generate an I/Q output otherwise the audio (if it could be extracted from the P3 and there is no DAC to do so)would be limited to the span and resolution of the P3 display. As Tony has suggested, the proper way to get wideband I/Q audio from the K3 is by use of a SoftRock with Clifton Labs isolation amplifier or an LP-Pan connected to the K3's wideband IF output. Other solutions would essentially be reinventing the Softrock or LP-Pan and any USB based solution would likely be limited to a 48 KHz sample rate if it used one of the commercial USB sound chips. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] RX I/Q output planned or thought about for the K3/P3?
Geoff, This topic was kicked around about two years ago and basically Elecraft said it they had no plans to provide access to the IQ ckts in the K3. I'm not sure if there may be future plans to add this for the P3? Since there is no hardware path then no firmware upgrade can switch it to a connector. I would have loved direct digital access to the IQ ckts instead of buying two LP-Pan, which duplicate the IQ mixers in the K3 but provide base-band audio output for connection thru a soundcard. I modified my K3 sub-receiver to breakout the 1st IF so I could connect a LP-Pan to it, as well. From the two LP-Pan I connect a four-port soundcard (M-audio Delta-44) for running dual-receive diversity reception on Linrad SDR sw. If I only want to use one receiver, I bought the emu0202 soundcard, since it can do 192-KHz bandwidth. I bought the LP-Pan used for about half-price and also the emu0202. I found the Delta-44 cheap on Amazon.com. I document all this here: http://www.kl7uw.com/LINRAD.htm Its an unfinished project at this time. 73, Ed - KL7UW --- Date: Wed, 9 May 2012 00:03:01 -0400 From: Geoff Wolf AB3LS liltechdud...@gmail.com Subject: Re: [Elecraft] RX I/Q output planned or thought about for the K3/P3? Re: [Elecraft] Connecting my Elecraft K3 to a Drake L-7 amp.
Jerry - The VOX connector is the transmit enable connection (PTT). The AGC connection is for rigs that accept external ALC, and may not be needed with the K3. Normal drive for full output is when 240 mA of grid current is indicated when fully loaded. Use the SSB setting on the plate switch for both CW and SSB. The lower voltage / lower power setting is from when we were limited to 1000 watts CW input, 2000 watts PEP for SSB. The amp will make about 1300 watts (low bands) to 900 or 1000 watts (10 meters) if you have good tubes. Simple adjustment procedure: watch the power output, tune for max using the plate and load controls. The panel markings will get you close enough to start. Recheck the grid drive to make sure you are not exceeding 240 mA and you are good to go. Both the tubes and the power supply are very forgiving, so temporary overloads will be well tolerated.I have used both the L7 and its earlier cousin, the L4B, for many years,. and never had a problem, even when running full-blast key-down modes like RTTY. You may wish to make a mod to the fan circuit to keep the blower turning about half-speed at all times, instead of depending on the thermal relay to start the fan when the amp is getting too hot. Simply wire a 300-ohm / 25-watt resistor across the thermal switch to accomplish this. The fan will still go to full speed if needed, but mush less often, and the amp will last much longer. Be sure to observe normal safety precautions when working inside the cabinet - disconnect the power completely, both from the wall outlet and the PS from the amp, including the HV connection before opening the cabinet. - Jim, KL7CC . Re: [Elecraft] Portable Antennas (Is there an easy button?)
Indeed AA5TB EHFA's web page was an eye opener for me. I've since studied the PAR (LNR) multi-band (40, 20 and 10) EFHW product with particular focus on the transformer box. http://www.hamradio.me/antennas/lnr-precision-ef-102040mkii-examination.html http://www.hamradio.me/antennas/lnr-precision-ef-102040mkii-test-data.html Of particular note are the resistance tests showing the wideband nature of the standalone matchbox to function from 60m to 10m with no tuning. This is not to imply, however, the matchbox/wire combo is multi-band. This clever little matchbox seems like an easy button. With that in mind, can anyone report what happens when the K2 (or any Elecraft) antenna tuner attempts to drive something like the LNR 40/20/10 matchbox/wire combo on some other frequency? Thanks. I have to agree with you Nate, I love my Elecraft k3 but I also love my TS2000 and have always had a high regard for Kenwood, they have not made much in the way of rubbish over the years. Re: [Elecraft] Connecting my Elecraft K3 to a Drake L-7 amp.
No. Definitely not. But he might need to set TX DLY to 20. That delays the start of RF a little to give the relay in the amp time to close. Symptom that it needs that adjustment is a little arc or spitting when the first bit of RF is generated. My L4B was doing that, and after moving TX DLY to a value of 20 it was ok. Using an external relay makes matters worse. Rick K2XT Is he going to need a relay buffer such as the ARB-704 with that amp? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Your correct to this point it's still vapor ware no published findings or even FCC approval yet. I also think that QST and Sherwood's reports will make or break this radio as they have with all other high end radios. The first reports will be published in Japan well ahead of here like the Yaesu one's did with the 5000 4 mo before here. I will be compared to the FT-5000, K3, and Flex 5000 pretty much in that order in rankings as they are published and see where it falls. As we all know it has a tough row to hoe with that lineup and those who do purchase we will see if they sell them as quickly as they have the TS-590s which I have seen even cheaper than a used TS-2000. Numbers change almost daily in the radio market what was on top one day could fall the next just one of those facts will look forward to see the numbers on the 990. 73, Fred/N0AZZ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Nate Bargmann Sent: Wednesday, May 09, 2012 6:05 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Fw: OT: Kenwood's new rig? * On 2012 09 May 05:28 -0500, VE3GNO Daniel wrote: without Rob Sherwood stamp nobody will spend big $$$ for colored displays. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Kenwood's new rig?
Looking at the TS990s it seems I have set up my K3 band buttons in a sequence that could not be more different (vertical columns, high freq to low, WARC bands segregated in righthand column; though 6m is the same button on both...). Not sure I could get used to the sequence on the TS-990, so guess I'll stick with my K3, hahah.. I think they have jumped the shark with these 100+ button rigs. At this point if the legends on my K3 controls disappeared I would hardly miss them. Not sure I'd ever reach that level of operational ease with one of these button farm rigs. It would be nice to have a built-in PSU, but that feature doesn't matter much with stationary rigs that aren't going to budge from the time they are unpacked to the time they are traded. A built-in PS would be a lot more appealing in a grab-and-go portable rig. 73, Drew AF2Z On Wed, 09 May 2012 05:06:00 -0700 (PDT), VE3GNO Daniel wrote: Jezzcrazzzy world...more buttons means more performance loool. The AGC is an input for letting the transceiver control the output power of the L7 which you don't need if you adjust your transceiver to a low output suitable for driving the L7. Re: [Elecraft] Connecting my Elecraft K3 to a Drake L-7 amp.
The AGC connection is an OUTPUT from the amp to the transceiver, not an input. Its purpose is to lower the gain, and thus the power output from the exciter when the amp is overdriven. On the L4B / L7 series amplifiers, the way to set it to adjust the amp for max output, then back of the AGC / ALC adjustment control until the amp just begins to reduce power. However, as several have said, it may not be needed when driving the amp with a K3. The operator can see in an instant which way the control works by rotating it from one limit to the other, and then adjusting it as per the first sentence of this paragraph. . Some on the air checking, as well as using a scope to monitor the transmitted output waveform will help the operator determine whether or not AGC / ALC is needed. - Jim, KL7CC hawley, charles j jr wrote: The AGC is an input for letting the transceiver control the output power of the L7 which you don't need if you adjust your transceiver to a low output suitable for driving the L7. The LP-Pan costs way more but has better dynamic range and other fancy features; nonetheless the little Softrock is a dynamite piece of engineering and does a great job. In either case you will get much better results by adding an outboard sound card instead of your computer's on-board card. I use an EMU0202, no longer made, but others are good too. You take IF out of the back of the K3 and feed the Softrock or LP-Pan, and get I-Q out. Re: [Elecraft] RX I/Q output planned or thought about for the K3/P3?
The K3 *is* an SDR as long as one defines an SDR to be a radio whose functions are defined by software (firmware). If your view of SDR is a radio that must connect to a computer soundcard, then the K3 will not qualify because the computer is inside the K3 in the form of dedicated processors. Any radio that uses DSP for modulation, demodulation and filtering (plus other things like NR and NB) is an SDR as far as I am concerned - as long as the software to do those functions can be changed. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/9/2012 9:52 AM, Arthur Burke wrote: The folks at Elecraft *have* mentioned this - they have often made reference to it as an SDR - not that it really matters to me one way or the other. Re: [Elecraft] RX I/Q output planned or thought about for the K3/P3?
If you decide to use the KX3's I/Q output, be sure that the 2.5mm plug's 'shoulder' doesn't interfere with the top cover. There is a cutout for the RX I/Q jack but it's not designed for Radio Shack adapters (too wide). Some molded cables also have this problem. HDSDR works fine with the KX3, using the I/Q output. You'll want to add some isolation though. The KX3 doesn't have its own isolation transformers because of mechanical design constraints. With the K3, isolation is built-in. FWIW, both radios are SDRs, their behavior being completely dictated by loadable software. Without software, both rigs are very robust hardware platforms, but a bit lacking in functionality 73, matt W6NIA KX3 #6 K3 #24 On Wed, 09 May 2012 08:01:05 -0500, you wrote: Geoff; As far as I know, the K3 is NOT an SDR. This battery has 16.8V max, well too much for 12V devices. There options. 1. Charge this battery to 15V max accepting lower charge. 2. Use 3 pcs battery accepting lower power. I use similar for K2, with good life but lower power. 3. Use LiFePO3 that seems to be safer but heavier and have nearly flat discharge curve of around 12V. Also it can be charged by normal chargers for 12V lead acid batteries. I bought 12V 20A unit from battery space (now around $140) and it works very well. Wow... That was easy, right? It turns out that I had sent the email as usual, formatted as auto detect. It turns out that some recipients are able to deal with the auto term easier than others. (I don't know what else to say. I am active on other groups...) Well, so be it. Lesson learned by me. Mike, The software used for the Elecraft reflector strips HTML. Thus if your e-mail program is configured to send HTML only, the message will be blank. To answer your question: I may be wrong on this, but I have (in the past) looked at each and every page on the Elecraft web site, looking for SDR and defined and the like. I was unable to locate these (or similar) terms. Had I missed a page? While Elecraft do not specifically state the K3 is an SDR on the web site, Eric, Wayne and Lyle have all referred to it as such on the reflector. The definition of software defined radio as given at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software-defined_radio) is: A software-defined radio system, or SDR, is a radio communication system where components that have been typically implemented in hardware (e.g. mixers, filters, amplifiers, modulators/demodulators, detectors, etc.) are instead implemented by means of software on a personal computer or embedded computing devices.[1] While the concept of SDR is not new, the rapidly evolving capabilities of digital electronics render practical many processes which used to be only theoretically possible. While there are SDRs that use a minimum of dedicated RF hardware with most of the control and processing preformed by *software* running on a general purpose processor (e.g, IBM PC or Macintosh) platform, an SDR may also be implemented by running code on a dedicated processor in the device (e.g. Elecraft K3, or any other transceiver that can be significantly modified by uploading new firmware). There is currently no commercially manufactured amateur HF rig that is 100% SDR. Every one, from the Flex-5000 to KX3 uses a different mix of dedicated hardware and processor based functions. However, nearly every transceiver currently offered contains some decree of SDR elements. 73, ... Joe, W4TV On 5/9/2012 11:30 AM, Mike Schwendeman wrote: FOURTH try… (!!) Re: [Elecraft] New KX1 low power and 20m oscillation
Stan Gibbs wrote Don, I tried your experiment but it had no effect. I just grounded point A because it is damn hard to jumper Q7. R28 measures good and is well soldered. It has -0.25V or so on the base side and 5.5V on the other during transmit. I also tried reducing the drive pot and, while the signal definitely declined in amplitude, the sidebands were still present. Could this just be an artifact of using my K3/P3 to view the waveform? If so, why would the 40m signal be so different? Stan, Just to recap my earlier thoughts, I think your Q7 is fine, the negative voltage is a red herring. It's due to the RF that is being grounded via Q7 (its task). Do you know any other hams who might tell what their Q7 DC voltage is, from functioning rigs? I gave you mine and they match yours within a reasonable tolerance. I will see if I can get to a ham with a scope and report to you when I can, maybe this weekend. [Elecraft] RX I/Q output planned or thought about for the K3/P3?
Mike, Use of other SDR sw with the K3 can only be implemented via using the 1st IF output to secondary SDR hardware such as SoftRock or LP-Pan that do provide interface to a computer where SDR programs like PowerSDR can be loaded. At this point it appears to me the only SDR sw that can be uploaded directly into the K3 is Elecraft's firmware. I think at the time the K3 was designed, SDR's were very new on the landscape and all of them had one large problem of lack of availalble, viable sw to run them. Elecraft wisely decided to develop the SDR sw for the K3, but failed to realize the interest there would be for running the K3 on alternative SDR programs, thus there was no external I/F provided to the IQ data stream. Apparently after the fact is hard to provide. In designing the KX3 (much later in time) Elecraft responded to the wishes of many for access to the IQ data by providing output of the baseband audio stream. Still not quite what was asked for, but very usable with several after-market SDR programs. The promise of the SDR radio is non-obsolescence thru continual ability to write updates or even new software to run the radio. The second aspect of that is the desired to run alternative SDR applications. In the competitive radio market we will see more and more SDR technology used to offer the best (and latest) features and versatility. In most SDR one sees conversion of RF to data by A/D conversion and signal processing and demod done in sw. Since the radio is essentially defined by the sw program it can be re-designed forever. Some designs use a quadrature mixer at RF before conversion to digital; some just go directly to digital and do it all under sw. To produce audio for listening to the radio a D/A conversion is performed. Soundcards provide both A/D and D/A hardware so were naturally included in early SDR design to keep costs in line. But A/D and D/A technology is progressing rapidly beyond so I would expect to see more SDR radio's that directly connect on a digital level with the computer (or have an embedded processor like the K3). 73, Ed - KL7UW - Date: Wed, 09 May 2012 08:01:05 -0500 From: Mike Schwendeman m...@s3com.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] RX I/Q output planned or thought about for the K3/P3? Re: [Elecraft] Radio Displays
Solution . . . Have your optometrist darken only the top half of your lenses. That's what you see through anyway. The bottom is used when you look down. He can also remove tint from the bottom of already darkened sun glasses. Cheaper and quicker than redesigning displays (which would probably never happen anyway). I've operated mobile HF for years with half-darkened sun glasses without squinting and without instrument clusters or radio displays blacked out. Likewise for gas pumps. And . . . you're welcome. 73, Kent K9ZTV On 5/9/2012 12:05 PM, Bill Frantz wrote: I have installed a couple of radios in my cars (a Yaesu FTM-10 and an Icom 706). Re: [Elecraft] Radio Displays
I wonder if something's the matter with your glasses. In my experience, radios, gas stations pumps, cel phones, c. are set up to be aligned properly for viewing through polarized sunglasses. I had a pair of sun glasses made where they got the polarization 90 degrees off. Other than that they accentuated sun glare instead of attenuating it, the other clue was that gas station pumps, radio displays, and so on, were not visible without turning my head sideways. I had the maker replace the lenses with ones that were properly polarized, and all was well. 73, Wayne Conrad On 05/09/12 10:05, Bill Frantz wrote: ... [Elecraft] kx1 20 meter oscillation
Stan, Before you conclude you have an oscillation on 20 meters, please make sure you are actually correctly sampling the actual output of the kx1 from the BNC antenna jack and not picking up stray signals radiated from the interior of the kx1, especially if its cover is removed. Sometimes the kx1 waveform as viewed on a oscilloscope or spectrum analyzer looks much better if correctly sampled. Put the cover on the kx1 and ground the case. Run it into a dummy load through a coax cable and a T connector. One way to sample the actual signal is to put a piece of insulated wire into the t connector (no direct electrical connection) and run this short wire and a ground to a variable or fixed pad and adjust the coupling and pad to provide a reasonable signal into your monitor receiver (say something less than about S9 + 20 db. I have also coupled a small signal to an outdoor antenna through a T connector, insulated wire dummy load, then hooked my receiver to another outdoor coax fed antenna.even if it is not a 20 meter antenna, possibly through a pad and/or receiver attenuator, and have had a good (reasonable level) signal to monitor. There are also RF sample circuits and special pads (possibly around 100dB ?) which provide the attenuation to safely and correctly sample the transmitter RF, which are probably not necessary unless you want to set up an actual means of measuring levels. Please be very careful not to couple too much signal into your K3. Probably you will need only a small amount of capacitive coupling into the T connector and can use a considerable amount of padding (try 20 to 40dB or more). Signal levels into a receiver of +10 dBm could potentially damage a receiver. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Kenwood's new rig?
I've been a knob, switch and button junkie from an early age, but cannot fathom how there could be 140 controls on an amateur transceiver. Not disputing your count, David, but I'd like to see a larger version of a photo of the front panel so that the function of each control can be identified. Certainly, that's more controls than on a commercial broadcast transmitter. In fact, the only piece of electronic gear that I can recall working on that had more adjustments was one channel of a redundant air traffic control radar system, with about 200. Please, not E-ink. It needs ambient light so if you are mobiling at night with the lights out in your mobile vehicle then you will not see the e-ink display. Also, e-ink is slow and in general, I think, the entire display must be updated to change anything which makes it a hassle for display of real-time events such as s-meter, SWR, power out, or even spectrum display. 73, phil, K7PEH PEH's iPad On May 9, 2012, at 2:17 PM, Arthur Burke aburk...@gmail.com wrote: The same thing happens with my IC-7000. Re: [Elecraft] Off topic. Logging programs and K3
Hi Tim. I think I see your call just about every day on the DX-IS forum! Once upon a time, I also used DXBase. When I discovered DXLabs a number of years ago, I departed DXBase and started using DXLabs and have never looked back. Now a word of caution... With your experience in DXBase, the learning curve may likely be less than someone else coming in cold. There *is* a learning curve with DXLabs. The logging program is DXKeeper and it somewhat reminded me of DXBase when I first started using it. In fact, one of the major import options is to import your DXBase log. The author of DXLabs is Dave Bernstein, AA6YQ. He is something to behold. He seemingly never sleeps, runs a Yahoo forum (he and W3ZJ moderate the forum) and thinks there's no such thing as a dumb question. He is incredibly tolerant! My personal opinion is that everyone should read at least *some* of the documentation, but when he encounters the mindset of ...it's easier to come here and ask questions than it is to do research!... he's far more tolerant than I think I would be! He is a hand holder of the first order. Unless you're downright rude or nasty, Dave will work closely with you (exchanging file data if necessary) to solve problems. Dave's recommendation is to pick up on piece of the DXLabs software (there are half a dozen applications, but they're nicely managed by the Lab Launcher) and gain proficiency with it, and then pick up the next one, etc. One of the main reasons I gravitated to it and stayed there is because of its querying capability. It's an Access database and, as such, you can write SQLs and scripts - you can filter your log by date, by zone, by mobile, by individual call, by DXCC entity, the list goes on. The awards is second to none - you can track DXCC, WPX, WAZ, the CQ DX Marathon, counties, IOTA - and for the ones you want to track that are somewhat obscure, there are a number of user-defined fields. Operation with both LotW and eQSL is virtually seamless - DXKeeper can talk to your TQSL for signing data to be uploaded, do the syncing, etc. A couple of mouse clicks (after you're set up, of course) and you're off and running. I have no affiliation with DXLabs other than as a satisfied customer. There can't be any fiduciary concerns as DXLabs is free! Oh yeah, if you like, you can print QSL labels, QSL cards, numerous reports, etc. The only potential negative? Dave has a very fundamental part of the coding that works as a contest mode - that's mainly so you can create a Cabrillo file. Dave makes no bones that he doesn't intend to do contests. For those desiring a free program with excellent contesting capabilities, one need only turn to N1MM - also incredibly well supported by the author and a team of assisting programmers. There are some features of DXLabs I don't use. However, if you decide to go that route and are too shy to ask for help on the forum, I would be happy to help you in any way I can. As a basically casual contester but avid DXer (need 1 more to get on the Honor Roll) I use DXLabs mostly for tracking DXCC. But I have reasonably good experience with many facets of the software and would be happy to help, if necessary. I use 3S1 of the older Li-Ion types in K2, 2 x 1.5A = 3A. I charge them through 1A regulator set to 12.8V. The batteries are past 5 years and doing well. No balancing. The charge is enough to run a pileup a few hrs from medium attractive places like TA , SV9 or KP2. I have new 4S LiFePO3 from batteryspace with 20A capacity (http://www.batteryspace.com/LiFePO4-Prismatic-Box-Battery-12.8V-20Ah-256Wh-10C-rate-without-PCM.aspx). No extra circuit. According to specs, the battery should be charged at 4x3.7 = 14.8V max. The batteryspace charger bought for this battery has 17V max. Apparently nobody complains so LiFePO3 batteries must withstand more. I fact, it takes very little current past 13.5V. I charge it with a 13.8V 28A charger adjusting the voltage initially to have current 15A. Then I max the voltage to 14.4V. Seems to work really well. Full charge in 1.5 hrs. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 LiNiCo 12v 3.6 Ah Battery Pack
Phil, Several of us on the list have bought these. John Harper, AE5X, loaned me his CBA II battery capacity tester and I've been running tests on the various batteries here. This battery provides about 5Ah of useful capacity, just about half it's rating. The up side is, it weighs 11.3 oz and will last a long time at the test current of 350mA. That's about what I figure average current will be on the KX3 with casual operating. Interestingly, my 7Ah SLA measured out at 7.2Ah, my 1900mAh Eneloops (cheap blue ones from Costco, $14 for 10!) measured out at 1.9Ah. I'll publish the discharge curves in a week or two and post a link here. What separates a company whose product has failures (and you're right, they all can) is how that failure is remediated. Guys, I want to ring the bell to ham comunity abt new fancy radios with LED/OLED displays. In the last half year or so I've seen on FT5K forum lots of people complaining abt OLED display failure and I owne one...that scare me a lot. Being involved in RD for over 20 years mostly in enterprise telecom I've notticed in the last year a massive invation of consumer grade components into the enterprise/professional grade equipement. Starting with near suicide initiative BYOD (bring your own crappy device at work) an going forward with cost reduction lifecycle- a mandatory step in any lifecycle product, the MTBF of most critical components, like displays, encoders, mechanical components, start falling down dramatically. When you spend few hundred bucks for a smartphone that anyway sooner or later in max 2 years you'll change it is not so severe but when you spend 5K+++ for a radio and after 2 years your displays are going down and guess what? that display is already obsolate part that scares me a lot. I am so happy the K3 does NOT have any tft/lcd/led display build in and I hope the next K line generation will avoid this big mistake of embedding displays in the radio and will stay like this. Just my 2 cents regarding new fancy color tv transceiver from kenwood. I have a strange feeling that we won't see aging this new transceivers generation on our desk and will become a consumer product like a coffee maker or toasterso sad VE3GNO Daniel From: Fred Smithm...@mo-net.com To: 'Nate Bargmann'n...@n0nb.us; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, May 9, 2012 7:47:39 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Fw: OT: Kenwood's new rig? It's almost comical reading the various forums where there seems to be a thought of anything but a K3 amongst some. I have no doubt that Kenwood will sell plenty '990s just as they have '590s. Not to be snide, but the picture made me think I was looking at an Icom! So far nobody knows what is ethernet port is doing...web server? sip+codec? or just firmware upgrade. Also why 2 USB's...is one possible to be used for a keyboard? Hopefully next week we'll have some answers Apparently there won't be a real box to play with. Re: [Elecraft] Radio Displays
I think mine are correctly aligned. Light is polarized when it reflects off certain flat surfaces such as water and asphalt. When I test my glasses, it kills those reflections best when my head is level. I agree that E-Ink has some disadvantages. It will absolutely need an external light for night use. However, the Kindles (which use E-Ink) I have looked at seem to be able to update their screens reasonably quickly. Deciding if it is quick enough does need to be tested. However, when I look at the K3 and KX3 displays, the only thing that might need speed is the s-meter. They don't have spectrum displays, and the other items can probably be handled by a peak-holding the display. A quick glance at the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_paper indicates that these displays should be able to be made for selective update, or even for application specific configurations like the displays of the K3, KX3, FTM-10, and Icom 706 to name just a few. Whether they can be manufactured economically in the small quantities required by these applications I don't know. The upside of the technology is an absolutely beautiful display, much like type on paper. It doesn't fade out in sunlight and has a wide angle of visibility. Since my FTM-10 is in a Miata, it is really hard to read the screen in strong sunlight, even without the polaroid problem. (And yes, the brightness is turned up to max.) (For my writeup of installing that radio with its broadcast AM/FM receive + 2M and 70cm, see the West Valley Amateur Radio Association Heterodyne http://www.wvara.org/het/heterodyne_201202.pdf. I have never investigated how natural sunlight gets polarized, but good quality polarized sunglasses have their lens polarity set to be 90 degrees off and so block that glare. Sunlight reflected at small angles, such as from a chrome strip [or a wet road] is glare and is polarized in the same plane as the reflector. This is predominantly horizontal, mostly, so polarized sun glasses are or should be vertically polarized. Gas pump LCD's [and ATM's and such things] have a predictable viewing angle, so if the LCD is polarized vertically, you can read it. Some other things, like perhaps mobile radios, HT's, and TV's in sports bars have less predictable viewing angles. Wearing sunglasses in a sports bar could be a bad idea on other grounds, however. Survival Tip: If you are ever lost, look through polarized sunglasses at the sky while rotating them. If you are certain you are lost north of 23N, the direction which shows the biggest change in brightness is north. Backscattered sunlight from the north is polarized, I'm not sure why. Of course, if the shadows cast by the sun didn't already tip you off about north, perhaps you're in more trouble than you first thought. If you aren't sure you are north or south of 23N, it's likely hopeless. :-) I'd like to know if this is reversed south of 23S. Maybe someone in VK or ZL can test this for me. I've been to both once, didn't have polarized sunglasses either time. Most everything seems to be reversed there, up/down, you know. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2012 Cal QSO Party 6-7 Oct 2012 - www.cqp.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html -- Gary VK4FD - Motorhome Mobile Elecraft Equipment K3 #679, KPA-500 #018 Living the dream!!! __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] kx1 20 meter oscillation
Rick, Thanks for your words of caution. I understand the issues and have tried to be very careful not to overload my K3. The KX1 signals on my P3 have been in the S9 region. Typically, I was driving a dummy load with my KX1 while my K3 was sampling my dipoles outside, about 30 feet above my shack location. I don't plan to chase this goose any more at this time, but I will try to run an experiment by taking my KX1 way out of the near field of my antennas and see if there is any change to the spectrum on the K3/P3. - 73, Stan - KR7C -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/kx1-20-meter-oscillation-tp7544182p7544897.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
