[Elecraft] [KX3] 60m operation - no TX

2012-07-06 Thread Johnny Siu

Hello Group,

I got a 'BND END' message when TX at 5Mhz.  I turned 'in' under BND MAP manual
for 5MHZ.  Did I do anything wrong?  I cannot TX in 5Mhz but other bands are ok.

TNX & 73,

2012-07-06 Thread Roger Banks
Hi Simon
I use K3 with K144XV and K144RFLK with an external 10MHZ GPS locked signal
adn have done so for 9 months or so now.
I have never seen this characteristic you describe. I can leave it on
GB3VHF beacon using JT65 / WSJT and it stays rock steady at 3Hz discrepancy
all day long. I have never noticed any jumping you describe.

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV + K144RFLK issue

2012-07-06 Thread Simon Lewis

Hi Roger

Hmmm thats interesting .. I wonder if its something hardware related then?

I know I am not alone and some others have the same issues -so not just
something locally in my station.

Its not ext 10 MHz source - I have tried 3 different sources and all do the
same as does my Rb standard too.

Every 3 secs it jumps a good way ... at last 10-20 Hz if not more ... I have
not measured it exactly but its very audible.

Im keen to fix it for sure ... if I knew how!

Cheers

Re: [Elecraft] Power Settings for no AGC in Elecraft Radios

2012-07-06 Thread WILLIS COOKE
Any time your amplifier cuts back your driver power it introduces a certain
amount of distortion which is undesirable, but not as undesirable as
over-driving your amplifier.  The best practice is to turn your driver power
down until the AGC is used only to eliminate spikes in power when something
overdrives your transceiver.  This is good practice with any transceiver but
the K2 and K3 have better controls than some other transceivers.  I have never
owned a K2 but my K3 can be set at any output power very reliably.  I can't say
as much for my Kenwood TS-440 which has a control, but it is too sensitive at
high power settings.

Re: [Elecraft] Power Settings for no AGC in Elecraft Radios

2012-07-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
John,

Other transceivers normally control the drive with a potentiometer that
adjusts the gain of one of the transmit stages.
The K2 and K3 do it differently - they actually measure the power output
and compare that to the power level that you have requested. The
microprocessor then adjusts the drive to make the actual power equal to
the requested power.

If you attempt to follow the advice for data modes normally given for
other transceivers "set the power to maximum and adjust the audio to
produce the power level you want" That will result in "power creep" if
that technique is used with Elecraft gear. The K2 or K3 will sense that
there is not as much output as was requested and will increase the drive
level.

So when operating Data modes with the K2 or K3, adjust the audio to
produce no ALC - with the K2 increase the audio level until you see one
bar in the ALC meter and then back it down until that one bar goes off -
for the K3 adjust until you have 4 ALC bars lighted with the 5th bar
flickering.

Then set the power level desired with the power knob.

Don W3FPR

Re: [Elecraft] Power Settings for no AGC in Elecraft Radios

2012-07-06 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

I know of no amateur transceiver that uses the same approach to power
setting as Elecraft but it is common in commercial transmitters.

 > I accept this, but don't quite understand the reasoning. Don can you
 > please explain the key differences between a rig, such as my Icom 746,
 > and the K2 that mandate this?

Elecraft *measure* the gain of the driver and final amplifier when
calibrating and set the IF output to the level necessary to drive the
amplifiers to the desired power output. Other amateur transceivers
simply measure the level of grid/base/gate current of the final
amplifier and reduce gain in an IF amplifier to prevent the current
from reaching an "overload" point. The problem with the typical "ALC"
circuit is that the excess current level must be exceeded before the
IF gain can be reduced *and* that point is dynamic which means the
ALC action introduces distortion by its very nature.

The Elecraft ALC is not a "feedback" design - instead it acts on the
audio input to slowly increase/decrease the IF output to the proper
level for the desired output. The K3 "ALC" indicator serves two
purposes - below the nominal "five bars" it shows expansion (additional
audio gain) needed to bring up the output level and above that it shows
the gain reduction used to prevent the driver/final from being driven
beyond the desired power level.

By knowing the gain characteristics of the driver/final *on each band*
Elecraft are able to prevent problems like the "power spike" and
"flat-topping" inherent in the feedback design. The modulator output
is set on each band for the exact level needed for the desired output
power. Unless the user changes the input level (too much audio) the
K2/K3 will not flat-top or spike and the gain does not "hunt" and thus
cause additional transmit IMD..

That's because you don't have CAT control set up. See the LP-Pan website
for instructions. If you want to fan your CAT connection out to more than
one port, you'll also need LP-Bridge. The software and instructions are on

[Elecraft] KX-1 Sidetone Level

2012-07-06 Thread Jim - W6VAR
Is there a modification that can be made to add a little more attenuation to
the sidetone of the KX-1? I have it set to the lowest level, but I still
find it a bit loud compared to the receive signals.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - far right S meter led lights erratically

2012-07-06 Thread Tom McCulloch
I have the CW Zero Beat mod attached to that far right LED. I'm almost
certain I got the board from Tom, N0SS (although he may used the K6XX
circuit). It's a great add to my K2, particularly for these tone-deaf ears!

It would be safe to say that not too many zero beated signals go by
without me remembering N0SS' contributions to this list.

[Elecraft] KX3 + NaP3

2012-07-06 Thread Tony Estep
I'm an NaP3 fan, having used it with my K3 for some months. Today, I got
the appropriate cable made up and tried the KX3's I-Q outputs to NaP3.
Setup took basically zero minutes. I just installed the software, using all
the defaults, and started it up. It works great! So far I'm using the
built-in sound card in my desktop (Realtek, 192K sampling) with the basic
MME driver. I'll experiment with other stuff later, but so far so good. If
anyone has thought about trying it but hasn't, I'd say go for it. Big
panadapter display, point-n-click tuning, etc. Up to this point, no hassle,
and zero cost.

[Elecraft] K2/100 - low power 15m only

2012-07-06 Thread aj4tf

Using a 50 ohm dummy load.
In tune mode, with KPA100 bypassed (power control to 10W out), power out is
OK on all bands (~10W).

When the KPA100 is engaged, all bands have full power output except 15m (21
MHz)... it tracks up to about 50W and peaks there. The other bands on the
LPF in the KPA100 (10m and 12m) are OK, getting around 95W out at 100W
setting.

Confirmed with external wattmeter, it agrees with K2's power reading in
tune mode.

I haven't opened the case up yet, this one has me scratching my head... any
ideas out there?

Re: [Elecraft] KX-1 Sidetone Level

2012-07-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jim,

There is no mod that I am aware of, but if you want to reduce the
sidetone level, I would suggest you add a high value resistor between
the junction of C2 and R15 to ground. Try 1 meg first - if that reduces
it too much try higher values until you are satisfied.

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 - low power 15m only

2012-07-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
If you had the KPA100 simply bypassed, but still in place, try the base
K2 again but turn the power up to 15 watts (to properly bypass the
KPA100 power the base K2 only through the coaxial power jack or turn the
PA menu setting to OFF (secondary menu).
If you get a HiCur message on 15 meters with that setup, check the base
K2 17/15 meter LPF - check for an additional turn on L21 or L22.

If you have full 13 or more watts output (and no HiCur) powering only
the base K2, then look at the KPA100. Look at all capacitor values in
the input side of the PA transistors as well as the T-R switch area.

[Elecraft] K3: HI TEMP

2012-07-06 Thread Ed K1EP
During Field Day this year, my K3 developed a problem. The PA sensed
a high temperature and shut down the PA, displaying HI TEMP whenever
I tried to increase the power out above 12W. When I displayed the
temp from the front panel, it read over 100C and was not stable. It
drifted up and down, at times even reading -100C. (Seems like a 7
bit counter with sign.) When the temp reading was below 84C, the PA
was restored and everything (except the temp reading) was
fine. Checking the calibration, the temp reading can be varied over
a 40 degree range, just not the correct range. I took the PA and
KPAIO board out and examined the connectors, there didn't appear to
be a problem. The temp sensor appears to be inboard on the PA, that
is, on the interior side of the board, not the one near the fans. If
there was any moisture ingress, I don't think that it would have
affected the temp sensor. The front panel temp sensor appears to
read a normal temp and the fans work properly. Does anyone have any
suggestions as to where to troubleshoot the problem? What is the
voltage on the temp sensor (transistor)?

Don,

With PA turned off, 15W out on all bands (except 10m, it was about 13W). No
warnings.

I'll take it apart tonight and look at it.

I forgot to mention, it had been working in the past, so I don't suspect
any inductors have changed the number of turns on them.. :-) but I'll look
it over and report what I find (if anything). Thanks,

Wooohooo, the shipping department is cooking with gas now My Jan 9th

In the K3 Utility, Press F1 for Help, then expand "K3 Utility Help" ->
"Troubleshooting" -> "MCU Load Failure", and follow the instructions
there.

Re: [Elecraft] KTA100 probs

2012-07-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
Steve,

Is the selected antenna port (ANT1/2) connected to a dummy load?
Set the ATU menu to CAL and try again.
Check your coax - continuity check from end to end on center conductor
and the shield. Infinite resistance between center and shield.

If you still have problems with good coax, a dunny load and the correct
ant port selected, the most likely problem is that diodes D1 and D2 may
have taken a static hit - they are a bit "tender"

Larry,

Do you have a saved configuration file? If so, try an EE INIT
(Parameter Initialization) - then load the new firmware and reload your
configuration.
If you do not have a saved configuration file, you will want to contact
K3support before trying an EE Init, and you will have about an hour's
work to load all the necessary options and do the calibration steps.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 ATU low power

2012-07-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
It is rare for any KX1 to be "toast". Unless you have done significant
damage to the board, it is repairable. Even board damage can be handled
by removing the parts from the old board and using them on a new board.
A little work, certainly, but it can be done.

If you can wait for a time, I could look at it and give you an
assessment of what it would cost for me to repair it, but right now, my
backlog is getting uncomfortably long. Send me a private email if you
want to consider that.

Congratulations. My guess for your next addition is the KPA3. Even if
you are a dedicated QRP operator, there are times when you will want
something in the 100 watt class.
That being said, I operated my K3 for a time at 5 and 10 watts, even
talking with some on 80 meter SSB who operate at 1500 watts to talk
across the street. They were amazed to hear that I was only running 10
or 12 watts (yes, I boosted to power for 80 meter SSB :-) )

So, what is the opinion of the learned and experienced regarding these

What's the better deal? Two of the former? Anything awful about these
packs? Caveats in their use, other than the obvious?
They seem small, light, protected, and relatively inexpensive. Am I
missing something?

I am not associated with this supplier. Is there another one that's better?

Re: [Elecraft] LiFePO4 battery packs

2012-07-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
Steve,

Temperature today was only 96 here in Wake Forest today, and the nasty
Thunderstorm mid-afternoon cooled it off some. Sounds like you might
want to move a bit East to the other edge of the Triangle area.

My answer depends on how you are going to use them - If you are going to
put them inside either the K2 or K3, then I would discourage that, but
then there are many reports that the LiFePo batteries are plenty safe.

Any of the Lithium battery technology batteries provide great
power/weight ratios.

Use the proper charger(s) for any battery. Most proper chargers want
direct access to the battery terminals, and that is one reason I do not
recommend putting them inside the transceivers. That can be done, but
do it safely and install a fuse.

If you are considering these batteries for the KX3, then think the
process through carefully. Are you going to be portable for extended
times? If so, stick with the internal NiMH batteries and the charger.
If those batteries are exhausted, go to the store and buy a pack of AA
size Alkalines and continue to operate. If instead you have converted
the battery pack to use LiFePo batteries, and they are discharged, you
are off the air until you can get the KX3 to a proper source of power to
recharge the batteries (you cannot use AAs from the store).

So, that is why my KX3 will retain the NiMH batteres, but I may use am
external LiFePo battery pack because the voltage is higher.

I do not have experience with either of the batteries you mentioned, so
I will have to let others answer that part.

Too many choices, too little time!!!

Don W3FPR

Re: [Elecraft] K3 4.51 is now production released

2012-07-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mike,

This is not a 4.51 problem as far as I know - many have loaded it
without incident.

Hopefully you have a saved K3 configuration file. I would think you
will have to do an EE INIT (Parameter Initialization) to recover, then
re-load the firmware and finally restore the configuration data.

If you do not have the saved configuration file, wait until Monday and
contact K3support so they can lead you through the process of
initializing all your options and doing the calibration steps - figure a
1 to 2 hour task for that.
