Well Fred, I don't know who's in charge of the VE sessions you have attended but... I have been a VE for many years. I head up our local ARRL VEC sponsored team. The only time I have required multiple forms of ID is when an appropriate photo ID was not available. Generally, this has been for young applicants that don't have a passport, military ID or driver's license. The following excerpt is directly from the ARRL VEC manual. 73, Bruce, N1RX Identification No one may take an amateur exam for another person. It is essential that the VE Team checks a candidate's identification (ID) before allowing the candidate to sit for an exam. The candidate must present a legal photo ID. This requirement is usually met with a driver's license, but it can be a passport or other legal identification card with the candidate's photo on it. When no photo ID is available, the candidate must present any two of the following: . Non-photo ID/driver's license (some states still have them); . Social Security Card; . Birth certificate (must have the appropriate seal); . Minor's work permit, school report card, school ID card or library card; . Utility bill, bank statement or other business correspondence that specifically names the person; or . Postmarked envelope addressed to the person at his or her current mailing address as it appears on the Form 605. [Elecraft] K3 Filter Selection
Greetings, Just got my new K3 options in Monday and had them all installed by Tuesday morning. I installed 3 of the 4 possible optional roofing filters. They have been turned on and the BW set in config. My problem is when I power down the radio they cannot be called up by tapping the XFIL button. I have to go into the config and call them up to verify they are there and then out of config. Once done I can call them up with a XFIL tap. Any hints or ideas of what I am missing? Re: [Elecraft] FCC exams
The FCC stopped giving tests in 1984, not 1934. Every U.S. state had photo IDs in 1984, as did almost every college, most high schools and many grade schools. While there were abuses, and I'm personally aware of at least one, it certainly wasn't due to a lack of photo IDs. And it definitely WASN'T easier to get a license prior to the VEC system being in place. You also need to understand that you can't require more ID than is required by the VEC, just because you're "in charge of the group." If a person has a valid photo ID, then you need to let them take the test. 73, Scott, N9AA On 8/29/12 8:21 AM, Fred Smith wrote: > Bruce I'm in charge of the group and I want at least 2 pieces of ID. [Elecraft] KPA500 Power Switches
I took delivery of my KPA500 a few weeks ago and I am pleased with it. However I was some what disappointed that the manual did not come with a schematic diagram of the amplifier. This has got to be my first piece of ham radio equipment that I have owned in half a century that did not come with a diagram. The lack of a schematic now leads to this question. Just what is it that the front panel ON switch is turning on and off ? The rear panel power entry module switch does kill all power to the amplifier, but the front panel switch when Off, leaves some circuit power up. Anyone know what is left power on when the front panel switch is OFF and the rear panel switch is On ? Having the main On Off power switch on the rear panel is a bit of a inconvenience in my shack. Also having just only one RF output connector is problematic. Guess that is what the KAT500 with it's 3 Output connectors is for Keith N4ZQ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Power Switches
The front panel on/off switch is an input to the microcontroller. The microcontroller runs all the time that DC power is applied. The back panel switch interrupts the microcontroller's power supply. When the front panel turns the KPA500 off, it turns off the HV power, dumps the power into the fans, releases all the internal relays, and turns off the front panel display. The microcontroller stays on to monitor the serial port. The KPA500 can be turned "on" again by a command from the KPA500 Utility or another program attached to the KPA500's serial port. A lot of consumer electronics, including my TV set and phone, aren't really "off" unless unplugged. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Keith O'Brien Sent: Wednesday, August 29, 2012 6:53 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] KPA500 Power Switches I took delivery of my KPA500 a few weeks ago and I am pleased with it. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Power Switches
There is about 10 watts of power consumed when the front panel push-button has turned the unit off. That's the power that is running the internal supply and the microprocessor. That's why I use the switch in the back. 73, Bob, WB4SON __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Fwd: [Magic Band EME] E6M DXpedition Final Advance Update
Original Message Subject:[Magic Band EME] E6M DXpedition Final Advance Update Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2012 15:44:42 + From: Lance Collister, W7GJ Reply-To: w...@q.com To: Magic Band EME Group , Moon-net Amateur Radio Moonbounce Well, all the equipment is now packed up! I really had hoped to be able to take my great new KX3 and its tiny power supply, since weight and space are a huge issue when carrying all the equipment for 6m EME along with you on a plane. Wayne and Elecraft have been unbelievably supportive, and much progress has been made over the last week with the new firmwar. Although the KX3 now works great on JT65A on HF, I still have some concerns about the frequency stability on 6m, so am biting the bullet and taking my trusted and proven K3 again on this trip. I am confident, however, that I will be able to install options to make the KX3 equally as effective and quite usable on future trips. We fly out on Friday to Denver and then on to Los Angeles and finally arrive in Auckland on Sunday. We will eventually arrive on the weekly flight to Niue a week from Friday. Please familiarize yourself with the full details of the DXpedition, which are here: http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/Niue2012.htm I expect to have slow, intermittent access to email, although I will be too busy when I am on the air to be able to connect to the internet and check my email. I also hope to be able to update the above page once we arrive in Niue. As before, I will post the contacts after each day of operating in order to remove any doubts about a station being in the log. Please, no duplicate contacts - the windows are limited, so let's try to leave an opportunity for anyone else who is interested in a contact ;-) *PLEASE*, *PLEASE* use the ON4KST EME CHAT page to coordinate among yourselves and *SPREAD OUT* every 200 Hz! I will be using my K3 again, so I have a GREAT bandpass and will be able to see you within about 800 Hz of my frequency ;-) Remember, this is what my SpecJT screen looks like: http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/JT65Asample.jpg The emphasis of this trip is on 6m EME, and I will be contacting stations on EME using JT65A mode. If you have a kw, good ground gain (flat, uncluttered terrain unbroken by houses, hills, etc.) and a good yagi on 6m, please call me during your moonset in the SECOND sequence (leave the TX FIRST box UNCHECKED) JT65A mode. During my past three 6m EME DXpedtions, I have completed with N3CXV (1500w and a 6M5X yagi) during his moonset ;-) Fingers crossed for a fourth new DXCC for him and many others! Depending on ionospheric propagation, I may also beacon on either CW or ISCAT on 50.110 or 50.190. I also will be taking a dipole for 20m, so may find some time to get on there when I am not busy calling CQ on 6m. Good luck to all, and I hope to be able to give you not only a new DXCC, but also a first E6 contact! Re: [Elecraft] FCC exams
My experiences were just the reverse, in the San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego FCC offices. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly while taking all three Amateur and five Commercial license tests over a period of years. My last test was taken in San Francisco the early 1990's after I had let my Commercial Radiotelegraph license lapse too long and had to re-sit the exam. I was told that was the last test administered by the FCC in San Francisco. Later I went to a private testing company for my GMDSS Operator's and Maintainer's licenses. All of the tests were handled well with no issues, both in the written and CW receiving and sending, which involved a judgment call by the examiner. (Applicants for both commercial and Ham licenses had to demonstrate their ability to send on a straight key to the satisfaction of the FCC Examiner as well as receive CW at the required speed.) Of course, I was there and ready before the start time too. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- I have heard such statements as that about the FCC testing and the way it was done. I have also heard how easy it was to get a license back then not like today where you have to have photo proof (3) pieces in hand to even take the test. Not like when the FCC gave them a DL and old license was given to someone to take the tests for them friends, brother-in-law or a paid for the task. It was a common event because on a lack of identification that we have in testing now. Just another good reason that it's been done away with to have stopped that abuse. 73, Fred/N0AZZ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Terry, Here is a link to a 2010 thread about this issue: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Rf-gain-tracking-main-vs-sub-td5668917.html The thread doesn't document the resolution (for me, EEINIT), unfortunately, but there is an interesting graph of the behavior by one of the contributors (HB9BRI) who also experienced the issue. Perhaps there is some information in the thread that will be of help. Did you verify that the behavior is still present after an EEINIT but BEFORE you reloaded your configuration? Re: [Elecraft] FCC exams
Going up to the Custom House in the oldest part of Boston was always faced with great trepidation. The FCC examiners were men of very few words. They just passed out the written exams and turned on the terrifying Code Machine and didn't say much else! I had to visit the place three times to pass my 2nd Phone (now GROL) exam because I couldn't make it past Question 70 before having to excuse myself to visit the Men's Room. Naturally, that was that...no re-entry. It finally dawned on me not to drink anything from the night before and to forgo my morning coffee. Hopefully, I've learned how to grasp the obvious more quickly since then. -- 73 de Dick, ka1oz Elecraft K3/100(K) #859 G5RV Doublet Titan-DX Vertical On Wed, 2012-08-29 at 08:59 -0700, Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: > My experiences were just the reverse, in the San Francisco, Los Angeles and > San Diego FCC offices. [Elecraft] S/N 1479 Assembly
I just finished with the assembly of my new KX3. A question or two and a comment if I may. First, the ATU does not seem to sit parallel on the stand-offs. I measured the height of each stand-off and they were the same ~11.26mm. I *finally* got the coax routed around the relay next to the BNC connector and up to the jack on the ATU. Is the ATU supposed to be parallel (maybe "flat" is a better term)? For reference, the ATU appears to sit lower toward the top of the radio than the bottom. Second, the battery connector inside the radio. I had a difficult time to get it to seat properly. Yes, I realize it is keyed and I checked that several times. Did anyone else have an issue getting it to seat? I finally got a blunt instrument and pressed it on the connector. My comment. Taking the paint out of the 4-40 holes was not too difficult on the case. On the legs, that was a different matter entirely. I managed to bugger up the threads on one of them. I finally quit as I was afraid I would break the thumbscrew off in the hole. Might it be better to either have a 4-40 tap included or use a harder metal for the thumbscrew? I would have used my 4-40 tap, but it is missing out of my set. I went ahead and was able to get the screw re-threaded and put in the case after assembly. I'm going to blow out the radio to make sure no metal filings might have turned loose on the screws. [Elecraft] Use of wireless keyboard with P3/SVGA
At the Boxboro Hamfest, Elecraft was demonstrating a P3/SVGA with the latest Beta firmware. They were using a wireless keyboard which plugged into the USB connector on the back of the P3 -- it was working flawlessly (including macros that allowed the up/down arrows to change the VFO A frequency in 10Hz steps). I asked Eric what keyboard he was using at the show and he confirmed it was a Logitech K360, which sells for about $30 including the tiny USB receiver. In my shack, at least, wires == problems, clutter and RFI. So anything wireless is a blessing. This is probably obvious to everyone, but I wanted to share that combination as something known to work. 73, Bob,WB4SON __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KX3 kudos, comment
So I'm really pleased with my KX3 (kit) that came to life recently. The radio performs very nicely, and, as I've pointed out elsewhere (blog.aa6e.net), it has volumetric efficiency of some 20 X my Ten-Tec Orion. The packaging is almost too clever for my ancient fingers to deal with. [Changing the AA cells is no great fun. Not that I will use them much.] Here is a minor complaint. The KX3 utility for Linux is not well labelled on the web site. It is not clear which Linux systems it is compatible with, and it is definitely not stated that it is incompatible with 64-bit Linux. I found this out the hard way. On reflection, it's no great surprise. Still -- good labelling is a good thing. I would have appreciated a source code distribution, but failing that I can run that other OS that starts with W when I have to. 73 to all Martin AA6E __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] USB Sound Adaptor
I received the USB Dongle yesterday. ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310401470794&ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:US:3160 ) First, it IS stereo in and stereo out. There is some confusing wording even on the packaging but it is indeed stereo all around. Someone suggested that the chip MAY not be as advertised. As this IS from China (with a Taiwanese chip) and having dealt with Asia for decades, I opened it (not recommended for the inexperienced, it is glued shut). It is indeed the Via Vinyl Envy USB VT-1620A chip ( http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/audio/usb/vt1620a/index.jsp ). The Via driver from their web site loaded and recognized the chip so I am 100% sure it is genuine. It should be capable of: a.. 2-channel ADC with 90dB SNR, 16/24-bit supporting 44.1/48/96/192kHz sample rates a.. 2-channel DAC with 95dB SNR, 16/24-bit supporting 44.1/48/96/192kHz sample rates I have some photos if anyone is interested. It is a nice little board and looks to be well made. Both the input (Mic) and output (Headphones and SPDIF optical) are standard 1/8 stereo jacks with the output having the additional optical coupler mounted just past the electrical contacts. It works great with HRD but I have no way of testing it for I/Q use as my KX3 is still a dream and my K3 is not equipped for I/Q out. Maybe someone better equipped and more knowledgeable could put this little guy through some tests??? If so contact me. FYI my QTH is Watsonville. BTW, I have no financial interest in this at all. Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Adapter
I purchased this item on a whim. It arrived Monday. I plugged it in and installed the drivers that were included on an accompanying CD. After I had installed the drivers I unplugged the device and found the USB end of the device to be hot to the touch. I don't know what is going on but am uncomfortable having a device plugged into my laptop that is getting this hot. I plugged the device in again just now and opened the accompanying audio control panel. It showed two slider bars for the microphone input. I get the impression that the builders of this device provided a stereo input but didn't expect anyone to use stereo microphones with such an inexpensive item. I don't plan to use this item because of the heat problem. I would like to hear of the experience of others. 73, Jim - W4BQP On 8/23/2012 5:07 PM, wb4...@knology.net wrote: > Weird. Bounced off the locked door again? what the ??? Just as I was about to knock.. the door magically opened.. and a solumn... unsmiling face... pointed at the NEXT door..that was plainly marked "ENTRANCE" however the one I was standing at was marked with a "FCC" sticking out sign. ... ... Seems I had found the door to the equipment room. They waited for me... Can you imagine facing my father, to tell him that we had to come back? Well... Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Power Switches
10 watts is 240 watt-hours per day, or about 3 cents, depending on your local utility rates. If you use the amplifier once a day, you have to decide if it's worth 3 cents not to have to reach around behind the amplifier to turn it on when you start operating and then reach around again when you finish. If you typically go for weeks between operating periods then it definitely makes sense to turn it off. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Problems
Brent, In cases of lightning damage to the KPA100, I normally just replace all the active devices (transistors, diodes and ICs) on the premise that if not damaged, they have been stressed and will fail later - I do not normally replace the KPA100 PA transistors because they are quite hardy.. The KAT100 does not usually endure damage other than the diodes in the wattmeter and usually the firmware IC, but you can't take my "usual" observations to heart with lightning damage. Most anything is suspect, so check it all out. Look at the boards - If there is evidence of charring or burning, that area will have to be cleared of carbon and any damaged PC traces replaced with wire repairs. What I am saying is that it is less expensive and easier to assume that all active devices have been damaged and arbitrarily replace then than it is to try to debug exactly the failing component and then endure the frustration of an additional failure a few weeks later when a stressed component fails. Replacing all the ICs in the KPA100 and KAT100 is not really that expensive when compared with the alternative. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/29/2012 6:48 PM, Brent Sutphin wrote: > I now have the basic K2 working as it should after replacing the TX finial > and bias transistors. Re: [Elecraft] Use of wireless keyboard with P3/SVGA
This is a nice device for ragchew work, but could be risky on a rare contact or contesting when the keyboard battery goes flat. However I see; "Hassle-free design: Up to 3 years of power without battery changes plus simple setup with plug-and-play wireless receiver (Keyboard battery life may vary depends on usage)" So maybe its not that big a risk. I note the product info says; "Requires programming with Logitech's SetPoint software, free for download" Does it have to be "programmed" before use with the P3SVGA? Re: [Elecraft] Use of wireless keyboard with P3/SVGA
According to Eric, it plugs in and works. No programming required other than setting up any Macros you want for the keyboard. Frankly I have lost more than one or two DX contacts when RF has gotten into my keyboard and shut it down. Thank heavens for paddles at times like that. 73, Bob, WB4SON __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Use of wireless keyboard with P3/SVGA
Bob, OK on the programming. I use it for RTTY. I hope to improve my type speed, however as you go typing is not the best RTTY print on the RX machine when sent by me. If there was a way to have a programmable character entry buffer which released at 45bps, once you have entered eg; 10 characters, or whatever you wish maybe also using bt to fill spaces etc, it may improve sent print quality. I use Vox send in svga config. Of course if you are a good typer then you have no issue. I have a few macro's and they are handy, but to have a decent qso, the custom for qso keyboard entry is needed. Having macro qso's on psk31 bored me to tears years ago, often the other station will not type , but just send macro's incl 73. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Power Switches
Rates vary widely around the country. Here on the Central Oregon Coast we are supplied by the Bonneville Power through 31 dams, over 2,350 wind turbines and a nuclear power plant. We pay 6.31 cents per kilowatt hour. Some power is bought off of the grid at peak times, so our power overall is only 93% carbon-free. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Jim Brown Sent: Wednesday, August 29, 2012 4:47 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Power Switches On 8/29/2012 11:32 AM, Alan Bloom wrote: > 240 watt-hours per day, or about 3 cents, I wish that were true. I would be inclined to use whatever currently-existing on-board unit for the maiden voyage. Then, test that fancy usb unit out, and then tell us about the bandwidth. -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Clint Sent: Wednesday, August 29, 2012 10:37 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] USB Sound Adaptor I received the USB Dongle yesterday. ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310401470794&ssPageName=A DME:L:OU:US:3160 ) First, it IS stereo in and stereo out. [Elecraft] [K2] lack of sensitivity...?
Hello, I knew this title would grab some attention ;-) Well, since my K1 worked so well, I decided to build a K2. It took me 30 hours over three days. Everything works, but… First, the receiver is pretty deaf on 20m. Not much static at all, faint signals. I plugged in my K1 on the same wire, and what I could barely hear on 20m on the K2 came in full blast on the K1. The preamp helps a little, but not much. On 40m, the score is closer, but still advantage to the K1 over the K2 with preamp on. I can use FL1 and FL2, but with 3, the signal is very attenuated, with 4 (200Hz), usually gone. The other bands, I haven't listened enough yet to make a diagnosis… I can hear more static than on 20m. I have set the filters as indicated in the manual. The K1 has the ATU, would that make such a difference? I use a 35.5ft wire with 13ft counterpoise, directly out the BNC via a binding post. By the way, I do get full output power on the K2 on all bands. I precisely peaked all bands on receive, then on transmit with my QRP wattmeter. Any advise? Thanks!
