I was getting hum on my transmit audio The problem is that the transformers are unshielded (and un-needed, but that's another discussion), and unshielded transformers are sitting ducks for magnetic fields. The simplest solution is to roll off the low end using TXEQ, which is a good move anyway. Most of the what comes through a mic picking up speech below about 150 Hz is breath pop, handling noise, and room noise, and nothing below about 400 Hz contributes to speech intelligibility. So a smart operator will use TXEQ to kill everything below about 300-400 Hz. TXEQ makes that easy, and it kills the hum picked up by the transformer. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 & Ham Radio Deluxe
Hi All, I am trying to get me K3 fully working with Ham Radio Deluxe and have run into a snag. When using their DX cluster window, I can click on a spot within the band I'm on and it works ok. But if I try to click on a spot in a different band, the radio momentarily switches to the new band and frequency and then quickly drops back to where I was. I have tried changing the baud rate and it made no difference. It works fine with my old IC746. Any ideas?? 73, Mike WB0SND Michael Marx sndtu...@vacuumtubes.com www.vacuumtubes.com SND Tube Sales 105 N. [Elecraft] [OT] Pigtail Rig Control with Android and Mac
Hello Everyone, I've added support for Pigtail into HamLog on Android and Mac. The Android update (v4.0) has support for Elecraft (KX3, K3, K2) and Yaesu (FT-8X7's). The update for Mac has all the same Pigtail functionality that you see in the iOS version of HamLog (Elecraft, Yaesu, Icom, Kenwood) including the KX3 user interface and CW Terminal. Here's a demo of the Mac update with Pigtail and KX3: http://youtu.be/6XZXxzuKCjM The Mac update will be in the Mac App Store in a few days. Here's a demo video of Pigtail with a KX3 and an EVO 3D cell phone running Android ICS, all on batteries: http://youtu.be/5xoURF-WPPA This Android update is in the Play Store (Market) now. If you're a user of HamLog on any of the platforms it's available for and would like to see something added, please send me an email at n...@pignology.net. I'm always happy to get new features added. 73, Nick N3WG P.S. EtherPig is pretty much ready to go. I made a 70 cm QSO with it the other day: http://youtu.be/ETbaqQCsgu0. When I adjust power on my KX3 (#797, MCU 1.12, DSP 0.94) the steps are +/- 0.2 W. I would have sworn that in the past I could adjust power in 0.1 W steps. I've been using DX4WIN with my K3 for about 3 years now. Mike, I have had each of my K3's tight up against the 2000A, 91B and 87A (transformer side)without any issues. But I must say at one point I had a cockpit error when I upgraded the firmware. For some reason the Line-In was at maximum. I was getting hum on my transmit audio if I was closer than a several inches from a transformer. Used a piece of steel as a shield that helped till I figured out what was going on. Reduced the Line-In and everything has been fine since. Re: [Elecraft] Location, location
Mike, That was a problem with the K2 (the AC magnetic field modulated the VFO magnetic components), but AFAIK, that is not a problem with the K3. Sometimes old problems get propagated where they should not be - we might even call those results "weeds". 73, Don W3FPR On 9/6/2012 5:05 PM, Mike Harris wrote: > G'day, > > Might be having to reconfigure the equipment layout. Re: [Elecraft] 472KHz/500KHz
It would be even easier if one could use a 10MHz IF for LF. For this the K3 and KX3 (when the code is written) xverter settings could be set to XVRF=0MHz XVIF=10MHz. This way the accurate 10MHz reference, already applied to the reference input to the K3 could be used as the local oscillator in the external transverter Dave G4fre Date: Thu, 6 Sep 2012 08:02:50 -0700 From: Wayne Burdick Subject: Re: [Elecraft] 472KHz/500KHz To: Edward R Cole Cc: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Transmit is not presently allowed below 160 m since low-pass filtering would not be adequate. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] DX4WIN
David, DX4WIN works great with the K3. I use the K3 X4 file. I did have to make a couple of small changes to the rig file. You make those changes in DX4WIN. One small change keeps the K3 in CW Reverse mode (if desired). The other change corrects an incorrect command that reverses the filter settings between VFOs A and B. Finally, you have to make sure that you have VFO OFS set correctly within the K3 itself. These three small changes will make the K3 operate smoothly with DX4WIN. I can send you details on all three if you need them. Just email me direct. I had to add a > buffer circuit between the ACCY output and the band decoder input. The Quadra has 1K series resistors and its inputs are clamped with diodes to +5V/Ground driving a CMOS buffer/line driver configured as a switch (input 1/input 2) . The KK1L decoder has 3.3K series resistors to the opto. In all probability the Quadra is "hogging" the available current from the band data outputs and the PS2501 optos are not getting enough drive. Replacing the 3K3 Ohm with 1K Ohm input resistors would probably have been preferable. Even without any loading by the Quadra, with the K3's 2K2 pull-up and 3K3 current limiting resistors LED current will be less than 1 mA which is marginal for a PS2501/4N32 type opto that has a typical current transfer ratio between 300 and 500% (current gain of only 3 to 5). 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 driving KK1L band decoder
As Joe mentioned you will need to do the pull up resistor update for this to work. I run a splitter cable off the ACCY port on the K3 with one side going to my Quadra amp and the other side to the KK1L board. Due to the different impedences between the two it did not work (driving one by itself was fine...but not both). I had to add a buffer circuit between the ACCY output and the band decoder input. Once I did that the KK1L board worked great with the K3 connected to the Quadra at the same time. I don't recall what IC I used but it was easy to get...think I got it at radio shack. If you are only going to be connected to the band decoder you should not need the buffer. 73 Greg AB7R On 9/6/12, Joe Subich, W4TV wrote: > > The PS2501-4 in the inputs of the KK1L band decoder are opto isolators. > Pull up resistors will be required in the K3 in order to provide drive > to the LEDs in the optos. > >> My KK1L board (built in 2006) seems to be loading down the K3 band >> outputs. > > The K3 band data outputs are open drain - they can not be "loaded > down" as they do not source voltage. Transmit is not presently allowed below 160 m since low-pass filtering would not be adequate. We'd have to provide an access code to allowing opening it up for experimental purposes. But even if we did allow transmit, I'm not sure receive sensitivity would be adequate for your purposes. Wouldn't a simple external transceive converter be a better approach? You could use 7 MHz an an I.F., for example, then use one of the KX3's transverter bands to show the actual operating frequency in kHz. Brian - I think this is normal behavior for the KAF2 (mine does the same thing anyway) - I think it's just displaying the time that was last viewed and takes about a second to update, as you mentioned. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] KAF2 displays strange numbers
Maybe this will help from the manual... Day/Night Selection: If you're operating outdoors, use the menu to select L C D DA Y , which turns off the LCD backlight and puts the bargraph into high-brightness mode. Indoors or at night, use L C D NI T E , which turns the backlight on and reduces the bargraph brightness. Bargraph Modes: You have a choice of O F F , DO T , or BA R for the LED bargraph. If you select DO T , just one bargraph segment representing the current meter level will be illuminated. If you select BA R , all LED segments to the left of the current level will also be illuminated, resulting in a more visible display. O F F mode turns off the bargraph completely during receive but uses DOT mode on transmit (see Advanced Operating Features). Display Modes: Tapping the D I S P L A Y button alternates between frequency display mode and voltage/current display mode. Other display modes may be available depending on installed options. In frequency display mode, the LCD will show the operating frequency, mode indicator, and any annunciators that are enabled, e.g. 2 4 9 4 5 . 0 4 c . This is the display you’ll use most often. In voltage/current display mode, the LCD will show supply voltage (E) in 0.1 V increments and supply current (I) in 0.02 A increments, e.g. E 1 3 . 8 i 1 . 4 0 . Voltage/current display is useful for monitoring battery condition and transmitter performance. It can also be used in conjunction with a simple voltage probe to check DC voltages inside the K2. A two-position slide switch on the control board, S1, selects either 12 V monitoring or the voltage probe (P5). If the voltage/current display shows 0 . 0 volts, it is likely that you have S1 in the probe position. [Elecraft] [K2] KAF2 displays strange numbers
Hi All, I have a KAF2 installed and it seems to work fine, with time and date set to UTC. Every now and then, when I press DISPLAY to show the time, the KAF2 will briefly show a set of numbers unrelated to the current date and time. I don't see any mention of this in the KAF2 manual (such as showing a version number or something). I did the same thing with the main synthesizer, and received the same result. I did have to add the 27 ohm resistor (tested the resistance afterwards, and it was as expected--around 27 ohms instead of 100 ohms). I also added the jumper wire for automatic front-end protection. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - HRD
*With HRD you do have access to the Main/Config functions. Press the "Menu" button located towards the center of the group of buttons on the right side of the screen. You will get a listing that includes both the Main and Config items. Click on an item and you will be allowed to make adjustments.* ** *There are a couple of missing items. A clean way to power the K3 on/off doesn't exist with HRD. It is not an easy thing to do as the K3 requires a totally different action for each. It takes a physical contact to power on and requires a short data burst to power it down properly. You CAN NOT just apply or remove power. You should able to "add" a button for power down. Also missing, at least I can't fine them, are VOX on/off. In looking at the K3's programmers guide I cant find where these commands are available within the K3 yet. [Elecraft] [K3] Keyer Pause
Hi Bruna, Thanks for getting back to so quickly. I cleaned the contacts with WD40 as you suggested and now it runs clean. I saturated a paper strip in WD40 and firmly passed the strip between as I held the paddle closed. Before cleaning I backed the contacts way back and inspected with a 10X loop. The contact on the adjustment screw for the dash appeared to have a large imperfection in the center of the contact. It looked like a rust pit on iron. I thought for sure it was a manufacturing defect but after the cleaning as described above it's gone and contact appears normal, like the others. After the cleaning I did about 100 73s and no 7V or other error. Same with other tests. For now it seems to work fine. It is still strange to me since the Leonessa worked fine on my K2 and on the CW Machine but not on the K3 (not KX3). Someone on the reflector talked about wetting current with Silver contacts. I see this as the only explaination of why it worked fine on the others but not on K3. I am going to talk to Elecraft support. My guess is that the K3 uses less current than the other devices, and thus never 'turned on' the dirty contact. In any case the real problem was a dirty contact. Thanks Piero and Bruna, and everyone on the reflector. 73, Don KA1KU __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] 472KHz/500KHz
I did an experiment with 600-meter transceive on the KX3 (around 500 kHz). With the ATU installed, which provides additional filtering for the broadcast band, the transmitter put out about 0.5 to 1.0 watts. But additional low-pass filtering would be required, and as noted above, receiver sensitivity is reduced in this band due to the high- pass filtering. 73, Wayne N6KR --- I tried keying the KX3 at 495 and 508 KHz and get BND END warning (probably because it is below edge of 160m). How do you defeat the out of band restriction? 0.5w output would work very nice for me as I currently only use 0.1mw to drive my 100w converted Southern Avionics Non Directional Beacon xmtr (used as a high-gain linear amp). The NDB is usable from 250 to 600 KHz by simply tuning a slug-tuned one-pole BP filter. Adding a preamp is an easy fix for receive as is a BP filter for 500-KHz. I currently have a three-pole LP filter for 600m. 73, Ed - KL7UW survived the 980mb massive storm last night (mostly affected Anchorage 70mi north of me). __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KX3 calibration questions - after EEINIT
After performing an EE INIT on the KX3 #797, per page 43 of the manual, I understand you can avoid recalibration by restoring a saved config file via the KX3 Utility. However, my KX3 is showing some odd behavior with the power level setting (resets to 0.0 W upon changing ATU MD between auto/bypass) that appears to be solved after an EE INIT, but comes back after reloading my saved config file, so I'd like to simply do an EE INIT followed by a manual restore my Menu settings to my liking (CW mode B, etc...) The manual states that if I don't restore from a saved config file, I need to perform calibration. However, it appears that most calibration values have been preserved: REF CAL, gain/phase for KXFL3, TXCRNUL, TXSBNUL, etc. I do notice that TX GAIN and TX BIAS have changed and that I'm not allowed to enter those manually, but I can run the automated calibration. So am I correct in thinking that all I need to do after EE INIT is run the TX GAIN and TX BIAS automated calibrations? Or are there dependencies I'm not aware of that will invalidate other settings after doing gain/bias? [Elecraft] k3/10 Now getting audio; but, not enough
Thanks for all of the help regarding my audio issue. Turned bias on as suggested and can hear myself; but, the audio level is low. Selected High, tried to put the additional audio stage in with "3" on the mike menu; but, get a response "N/A". Have yet to find the right combination to get sufficient audio out of the mike. I still feel that my problem is configuration. Any thoughts? [Elecraft] KX3/144 and the K2QO/R
Hi Gang, As we get ready to make another run at top Limited Rover in this weekend's September VHF Contest, I am a bit sad that more Elecraft gear is not along for the ride. We only have an XV222 on this rove. Running a tiny rover vehicle (Saturn Vue) is tough and shoe-horning an IC-746 in the front seat to run 2M is NUTS! But what choice do I have as the KX3 with the built-in 2M option is not available yet, HINT HINT. So, if you have VHF gear, get on for what might be a wild ride given the crazy cool propagation this time of year.
