The Ameritron switch is a "tree" relay arrangement. Port to port
isolation is poor as is impedance matching (SWR) on the higher
bands due to long leads and open frame relays.

Re: [Elecraft] K-Line: Antenna switching

2012-10-09 Thread Randy Farmer
I would enthusiastically recommend the microHAM Station Master. It will
do everything you want and more. Since it reads the radio frequency
directly, you can select antennas not only by band but also by sub-band
if you wish. You can also select any number of antennas manually using
either the front panel controls or a PS2 remote keypad. An alphanumeric
display on the unit displays the selected antenna in plain text, using a
name you can assign for each antenna. The Station Master also provides a
host of configurable control lines to control all sorts of other
hardware. The microHAM folks also make fine antenna switches with either
six or ten ports. Their stuff isn't exactly cheap, but it's first class
all the way.

[Elecraft] K-Line: Antenna switching

2012-10-09 Thread Jim Miller
I'm adding a KPA500 and KAT500 to my station equipment. The only coax to
the shack will be a run of LDF5-50 to a TBD remote switch, preferrably with
8 antenna ports.

Knowing my limitations I'd prefer a means of decoding the K3 band outputs
and controlling the remote switch automatically. An external override to
select an alternate antenna (e.g. an inverted V instead of vertical for
80m). I'd like some indication of what antenna automatically (or active
override) is selected as well.

I've looked at several devices (top ten, dxe, ameritron, elecraft) and
haven't found something that meets all requirements. Of course I could
start with just a manual unit and built something myself but I'd prefer to
buy a unit due to other priorities. I'm looking for both the shack box and
the remote relay box as well. I've seen several relay boxes that would
likely work but not yet anything for the shack.

Suggestions welcome!

[Elecraft] New Call sign for Lew ex-K6LMP

2012-10-09 Thread Lewis Phelps
I wanted to let you all know that I have changed call signs.

My new call sign is N6LEW, just approved by the FCC.

If you're wondering why I switched from K6LMP, it's because I wanted K6LEW or
N6LEW when I first got back into amateur radio about a decade ago. Neither was
available, so I went with my initials. I found, over the years, that LMP isn't
a particularly good call sign for voice communiciation because it's hard to
distinguish between the letters M and N, and between P and T, so I kept getting
requests for repeats of my call during VHF contests, especially when it really
was a weak signal contact. ("Is that K6LNT?")

N6LEW, on the other hand, doesn't contain any confusable letters.

Plus, of course. it's my name.

Every couple of years I have checked the FCC call sign database for
availability. The former owner of N6LEW let his call sign drop several years
ago, and after I learned that the FCC's two year waiting period had expired, I
filed a request to re-issue it to me.

My new email address is Lew (at) N6LEW (dot) us

Re: [Elecraft] Leftover parts after KX3 build???

2012-10-09 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mike,

It is not unusual to find a few extra pieces of small hardware items in
an Elecraft kit. It is better to have a couple left over than to have
one short!

The hardware is weighed rather than counted, so on lightweight pieces,
one has to apply a small 'fudge factor' to assure that the number packed
will be sufficient. That is not a problem with pieces that weigh more.

All is well in Zion!

Thanks to all you Elecrafters for your help.
I took off the transformer and looked at the I/O board.
The 10 wire ribbon cable was loose. How the "H" did that happen?
Well, I pushed it down - reassembled and it appears to be working FB.

The nice thing is I was not at all nervous about whether "we" could get it
working. The first kit I built had me a bit on edge. I really didn't want
to
spend $500 dollars on something I would never get working. After some
troubles with my K1 and the great support of this group and Elecraft, I
really know that these rigs are going to work - despite my ineptitude.

Thanks again.

[Elecraft] KX3 Reception issue and VFO noise

2012-10-09 Thread Clint
Last week I finished building my KX3, SN 1926. Wow, what a little powerhouse.

I am not a contester but this past weekend the California QSO party was on so I
jumped in a few times just to see how my little guy was doing. I noticed a few
not so good things.

First there was lots of VFO noise. VFO NR helped but did not kill it.

Second I had a loose/bad connection somewhere. I could bump the radio and
reception would change drastically. Bummer!

Yesterday I jumped back into the radio. I noticed the bare area with no paint
on the side panels had a stripe of paint on the bottom (outer) edge. This
SHOULD have cleared the main chassis but I suspected it did not completely
clear. As this was the area that responded the most to my bumping exercise I
removed the strip of paint. I also checked the Mic jack as it has a ground
connection. It was OK. I also cleaned (again) the bare aluminum areas and
applied a light coat of Deoxit Gold.

Well, this has fixed the reception problem. No more goofy reception, and I
suspect transmission too, and the VFO noise is reduced. I did reseat the filter
board, the flex connector and the auto tuner. I also applied (again) a light
coat of Deoxit Gold (mine is cut 50% with IPA) but I found no issues with any
of the connections and I had applied Deoxit during assembly, as a preventive
measure.

So there you have it, for what it is worth.

Clint

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Filter Blow-By

2012-10-09 Thread Oliver Dröse

Hi Jim,

okay, that's another effect you are experiencing. Sideband suppression on 10 &
6m was really bad on my KX3, too, just about 25 dB on 10 m and 10 dB on 6 m,
but that was easily fixed with the OSB suppression by band field test firmware.
It is probably going to be officially released soon. It will suppress the OSB
by more than 60 dB per band if correctly done, I even have cases where I cannot
hear the OSB anymore (seems like a wonder, hi) with an S9+20 main signal.

Luckily I do not experience your 50 Hz signal problem.

I did some more careful checking this morning, transmitting a few watts on
the FT-1000MP and using a couple of inches of wire as an antenna on the KX3, on
a quiet 10 meter band. The S-meter on the KX3 was 9+

There is noticeable opposite (lower frequency) side suppression issues, but
this cuts off at about 900 Hz

On the higher side, I can hear signal to as far as my hearing and/or the
audio chain permit. The most interesting note was that the undesired signal
(high side only) takes a sharp dip or disappears every 50Hz, at .00 or .05 on
the frequency readout.

I'm not sure what to make of all this, but FWIW . . .

Hi Jim,

did you have VFO NR enabled by chance? I suppose yes, as the KX3 is quite
unusable on the high bands without. :-( There is a known issue = bad effect
of the DSP leading to "artifacts", i.e. hearing signals +/- 5-6 kHz again
from strong stations. If you turn off VFO NR it goes away, but then the VFO
noise is much too strong. :-( Another bad effect is even with VFO NR
enabled
if you tune "over" strong stations you suddenly have strong VFO noise until
you stop turning the wheel. Afterwards it's gone again. And if you turn the
VFO fast enough you will not even recognize even 59+ signals. :-( All
problems from the VFO NR DSP implementation as confirmed by Elecraft. And
no
matter if with or without roofing filter and with/without 8 kHz shift
enabled. Still wonder why nobody else is complaining about those effects?
Cannot be that everybody has an s4 noise level on 12, 10 & 6 m that would
mask the VFO noise and thus no need to enable VFO NR.

I documented all those effects on video and sent it over to Wayne. He said
he and Lyle are working on it, hopefully with some results soon, otherwise
the KX3 is of no use for a high band op like me. :-( Never seen such
problems with *any* other rig owned so far ...

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 finally on order

2012-10-09 Thread orthodoxhome
Along the same lines..., this is what I bought for primary containment of this
hot radioactive device.
http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Plano_Guide_Guide_Series_Waterproof_Case_1460/descpage-PL1460.html

I wrap the KX3 in bubblewrap and place it somewhat diagonally in the box with
the right-angle antenna connector sitting in a void and held in that
configuration by filling other space with the MH3. The rubber peices that come
with the box are sticky-soft and hold everything tightly in place with very
little compression on the bubble wrap. It is gas-tight as well.

This box and a few other containers (for cables, headset. various connectors,
meter and an antenna analyzer (which I don't need because the KX3 will match
anything it seems) all go into an Igloo ice chest for easy carrying - with
room to spare for additional items.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Coleman-Premium-28QT/13848709

When I need my 23 AH Lifeline battery (also runs my CPAP machine) for camping,
I carry it in this
http://www.igloo-store.com/product_detail.asp?T1=IGL+PLAYMATE+MINI&trk_src_ss=IGLPAYPCWEBMACSS&kw=igloo%20playmate%20mini
carrying case ($9 from WM) I cushion and hold the battery in place with
strips cut from rigid foam pipe insulation) I just purchased an APP chassis
connector to install in the cover. The handle makes such a dense battery
quite manageable.

If you activate Noise Reduction (NR) on a mode (like CW), NR is on for all
modes on that band. Request NR to follow both mode and band. For example,
if you have NR selected for 40m CW, and change to LSB, NR is OFF (unless
previously activated for that mode).

[Elecraft] KX3 finally on order

2012-10-09 Thread Jim Sheldon
Finally got my KX3 kit on order. Talked with April @ Elecraft this morning to
confirm things. Going to be a kit with the ATU, Roofing Filter, Paddles and
the MH3 microphone which won't get used much except on 6 meters, but needs to
be in the bugout kit anyway.

Found a really nice looking, bright yellow, lockable, (padlock loops)
waterproof case that will be large enough to hold the KX3 and the microphone
plus a few cables from the Marlin P. Jones ( www.mpja.com ) company down in
Florida. $17.95 plus shipping and they had 400+ left according to their
website when I ordered mine. Their part number is 17813 BX and the complete
website address for it is http://www.mpja.com/10-09-12.asp?r=203963&s=22 in
case anyone is interested.

[Elecraft] K3 SWR Consistent - Low or High Power

2012-10-09 Thread N4OI - Ken
Well, my K3/100 and P3 are now a whole week old! Had a great time assembling
and now having a blast getting to know them -- the P3 and the CW autospot
and APF features are favorites so far.

*One observation:* I use low power to set SWR with my TenTec manual tuner.
My FT-920's SWR meter would usually shift a bit when I increased power to
100w and I would then quickly tweak it back down. With the K3's SWR meter
(no ATU installed), after setting the tuner at 10w or so, the reading stays
the same when power is increased to 100w.

I assume there is a difference in the K3's SWR sensing circuit that makes it
more consistent regardless of power out, but just wanted to see if this
observation makes sense.Thanks in advance!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Filter Blow-By

2012-10-09 Thread M5FRA - Colin
Jim, that prompted me to fire up the sig gen and have a look. On all HF
bands I found that with an S9 +30 sig the opposite sideband is around
55db down, i.e. around S3-4. With an S9 sig it is barley audible and it
takes an S9+15 (approx) for the opposite sideband to register on the S
meter. The settings were PRE (20db) = on, B/W 250Hz, XFIL=FL3. I did
not get the the 50Hz sigs that you found. Could that have been front
end overload? I use mostly CW and have not found any of this to be a
problem.

from strong stations. If you turn off VFO NR it goes away, but then the
VFO
noise is much too strong. :-( Another bad effect is even with VFO NR
enabled
if you tune "over" strong stations you suddenly have strong VFO noise
until
you stop turning the wheel. Afterwards it's gone again. And if you turn
the
VFO fast enough you will not even recognize even 59+ signals. :-( All
problems from the VFO NR DSP implementation as confirmed by Elecraft. And
no
matter if with or without roofing filter and with/without 8 kHz shift

Re: [Elecraft] connection among K3, KPA500 and KAT500

2012-10-09 Thread Richard Ferch
Johnny,

I don't believe that will work. According to Dick K6KR: "For amplifier
key line interrupt, you should use two 15-pin cables, or two RCA cables
(radio to ATU, ATU to amplifier). But you can't use one of each. The RCA
connectors and 15-pin ACC cables use different poles of a double pole
amplifier key line interrupt relay." (see

for Dick's full message, which has other useful information about this
topic).

Re: [Elecraft] connection among K3, KPA500 and KAT500

2012-10-09 Thread Dick Dievendorff
We just put a new cable order item onto the order page yesterday.

You may want to consider the E850468 "Optional KAT500 to KPA500 Cable". It
will also work as a K3 to KAT500 cable. It doesn't include the Y or Tx line
keying adapter that are included in the KPAK3AUX cable set.

http://www.elecraft.com/elecraft_prod_list.htm#kat500 You may need to
refresh your browser cache if you have a cached older copy of the Elecraft
order page.

You can't use one 15-pin acc cable from K3 to KAT500 and then an RCA cable
from KAT500 to the amplifier. The RCA key line path uses a separate relay
pole from the key line in the 15-pin cable. For the K3 to KAT500 to KPA500,
you'll probably want two of the 15-pin cables so that the K3 is aware of the
KPA500.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 cable

2012-10-09 Thread Gary Gregory
*Off the Elercaft order page:

**E850463* *Optional KAT500 to KPA500 Cable*

KAT500 to KPA500 cable. Provides band data to KAT500 for band change prior
to TX,, and feeds through KPAK3AUX cable data from the K3 to the KPA500.
Typically used in addition to the KPAK3AUX cable from the K3 to route band
data, keying and AUXBUS data through the KAT500 to the KPA500. (The KAT500
has AUX Cable IN and OUT connections.)

This is the same 15 pin cable as is contained in the KPAP3AUX cable set
(see above, under the KPA500). That set also includes a Y cable expansion
adapter and a TX line keying interrupt adapter for the K3 to KPA500 link.

Seems like a reasonable price or roll your own as they say

:-)

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 cable

2012-10-09 Thread k5oai
Now how about a cable for the rest of us K3 users that don't have a KPA500
and just need a cable from the K3 to the KAT500?

[Elecraft] connection among K3, KPA500 and KAT500

2012-10-09 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Elecrafters,

I notice there have been discussions about the above in this forum.

If I only have ONE KPAK3AUX cable, should I connect it between KAT500 and K3?
The connection between KPA500 and KAT500 is just a RCA cable for PTT.

Any ideas?

TNX & 73,

Johnny VR2XMC

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Filter Blow-By

2012-10-09 Thread M5FRA - Colin
As a update to my previous post I measured the opposite sideband
rejection on 20m and got 58db which is within spec and not that bad for
a direct conversion RX. While I would like it to be better I can live
with those sort of figures.

[Elecraft] KPA500 build problem - no out put, no PC connection

2012-10-09 Thread Stan AE7UT
I just finished my KPA500 and am having some trouble.
I'm using it with a K3 and the Aux cable.

It powers up fine. HV is 73.0, FAN CTL doesn't turn fans on.
The fan does not run when I turn it off as stated in the manual.
The KPA500 utility can't connect with it.
Using the same cable I can use the K3 utility without a problem.
The K3 switches the bands on the KPA500 and the KPA500 switches the K3
bands.
The K3 indicates when I switch from standby to operate.
On standby I can operate with no problem.

I have removed the front panel and reseated the cables twice.
I did not pull the transformer or play with the I/O module.
I'll do that tomorrow when I get a little more time.

Anyone have similar problems? Any thoughts?
Of course I'll call Elecraft for help if nothing seems to work.
