it has been working very well for over 2 months and a lot of features so no
foul ups. But the nice part is that it is so simple to install and use.

[Elecraft] (K3) SWR Consistent - low or high power

2012-10-10 Thread Tom Boucher
My theory in these cases is that it's nothing to do with bad antenna
connections, but more due to the rig putting out a higher harmonic content at
higher power levels. The SWR meter sees a bad SWR at the harmonic frequency so
the reading is slightly worse.

I use the Six Pak antenna switch and love it. It has one problem, its
sensitive to drive
voltage for the relays, mine had to be adjusted by bending the spring mount for
each
relay. It wanted 13.5 volts to pull in a relay, should be 10.5, or so, I
forget the
exact amount, according to Array solutions. The fix is to bend the tab that
the return
spring is mounted to, adjusting the force needed to pull in.
Once I got the spring tension correct it has worked flawlessly for several
years in an
SO2R setup.
If you need more antenna inputs they now have an 8 input switch.

left over but just 2 came and they were never used.

Re: [Elecraft] (K3) SWR Consistent - low or high power

2012-10-10 Thread Brian Alsop
Some of this effect hqs to do with the reflected power diode.
Depening upon the sense circuity, the reflected power diode may not see
enough voltaqe to be fully conducting. Thus it reads less current in
the reflected position and hence lower SWR that at higher powers.

Also the type of diode used is important. I believe the K3 use Schotky
diodes which conduct at lower voltages than say silicon diodes.
Germanium diodes are even better but fragile and harder to get these days.

I like the Six Pack also and use one at K0PP's for SO2R and one at home.
At home I added a W9XT Band Decoder and High Side Driver to
automatically switch antennas on one of the ports. Haven't gotten around
to adding the second side. Incidentally the band decoder is optoisolated
and doesn't load the band data outputs so the decoder and the amplifier
work ok together. I seem to remember some people have had problems when
they added a decoder.

Yes. And it doesn't even NEED band data -- like the KPA500, it
auto-detects the transmiitted frequency, recalls settings for that
frequency, and switches between antennas if it has been programmed to do
so. I've been beta-testing one for about a month. The only connections
between my K3, KPA500, and KAT500 are coax and PTT, and they work
together flawlessly. When I do contesting, I use the K3 and KAT500 with
my 30 year old Ten Tec Titan tube amp at legal limit power. Works fine
that way too.

A band data connection allows the KAT500 to switch when you change bands
on the K3, before you transmit. That saves a few hundred msec. So far,
I've not seen the need for it.

A band data connection allows the KAT500 to switch *before* RF is
applied rather than hot switching *after* RF begins. I would be
very concerned about the service life of the relays when using RF
switching at high power - particularly in a constant power mode
like RTTY.

Most relays have significantly higher carry ratings than switch
ratings and will not survive repeated switching at full power.
While the KAT500 may be fast enough to switch during the ramp up
time at the start of a transmission, that is still pushing the
envelope - particularly if one is using it with a legal limit
amplifier.

This is prevented by the requirement that PTT be looped through the
KAT500. When the KAT500 is tuning (or switching), PTT to the amp is
interrupted. The only condition under which this does not work well is
with an amp like the Titan, whose 30 year old logic won't allow
interrupting PTT to stop TX because that would hot-switch the T/R relay.
When using that amp, I transmit a dit or two (or tap the mic) to let the
KAT detect frequency so that it can switch bands before I transmit for
real.

Re: [Elecraft] (K3) SWR Consistent - low or high power

2012-10-10 Thread Vic K2VCO
There are several causes for varying SWR readings with power level:

1) Poor diode linearity -- diodes are less sensitive at low levels, and
reflected power
may be very low at QRP levels. This effect shows as a low indicated SWR at low
power
levels, which then becomes more accurate past a given power level.

2) Harmonics -- as described below by G3OLB.

3) Parasitic oscillations -- a misadjusted amplifier can oscillate a few
hundred kHz from
the operating frequency, where the antenna is not resonant (or a tuner is not
tuned). VHF
parastics are also possible. Any significant off-frequency output can cause a
high SWR
reading. Needless to say, this is very serious and must be corrected.

4) Common-mode current -- antenna currents on the outside of a coax feedline,
caused by
feeding a dipole (etc.) without a balun, or by coax running parallel to antenna
wires even
with a balun, can upset SWR readings. This effect changes with the feedline
length as well
as the power. SWR indicators may vary in their susceptibility to this effect.

On 10/10/2012 2:20 AM, Tom Boucher wrote:
My theory in these cases is that it's nothing to do with bad antenna
 connections, but
more due to the rig putting out a higher harmonic content at higher power
 levels. The
SWR meter sees a bad SWR at the harmonic frequency so the reading is slightly
 worse.

 73 Tom G3OLB

N3OI wrote: *One observation:* I use low power to set SWR with my TenTec
 manual
tuner. My FT-920's SWR meter would usually shift a bit when I increased power
 to 100w
and I would then quickly tweak it back down. With the K3's SWR meter (no ATU
installed), after setting the tuner at 10w or so, the reading stays the same
 when power
 is increased to 100w.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Antenna Selection?

2012-10-10 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

This is prevented by the requirement that PTT be looped through the
KAT500. When the KAT500 is tuning (or switching), PTT to the amp is
  interrupted.

This only moves the hot switching from the KAT500 to the amplifier.

Whilst the KPA500 can handle hot switching due to its PIN diode T/R
system (we won't talk about the clicks that result) other amplifiers -
particularly those with vacuum relays on the output - will certainly
suffer a catastrophic failure (damaged relays and/or flashover due
to the transient no load condition) if asked to hot switch on a
regular basis.

When using that amp, I transmit a dit or two (or tap the mic) to let the
KAT detect frequency so that it can switch bands before I transmit for
 real.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Antenna Selection?

2012-10-10 Thread Gary Gregory
*Ollie,

Correct.

I might add the advantage of using AUXBUS on the KAT500 (for me at least)
is on receive, changing bands to 'check' another band, there is no need to
Tx a DAH to effect a change from say ANT1 to ANT2 if that is the antenna
assigned to that band.

Without AUXBUS connected one has to TX some RF to cause an antenna change.

Convenience! (but as noted by Jim, not essential)

YMMV

[Elecraft] KX3

2012-10-10 Thread Dominic Baines
Hi all,

Ref:
http://www.ae5x.com/blog/2012/10/10/m1ktakh8-qrp-with-kx3/

My KX3 Serial number is 1082

I'm qrv for one more night 11th October 08:00-18:00 UTC (starting 10 ish hours
from right now) from beach on north shore of American Samoa with a perfect NE
orientation, 800m cliff 200m behind beach and 600m coral reef shelf in front
so lovely salt water for 10 wavelength out so really good take off for 15m and
20m vertical dipoles right on the waters edge. Antennas are speaker wire cut to
resonance fed with RG58 hung on 10m fishing poles with bottom element 1m above
the wet sand all in all about $50 worth of antenna so anyone can make one.

No B.S. I am running the KX3 barefoot and it is only set at 5W as no mains
power for any supply.

If you fancy a KX3 2 way qso please try and find me...

On 15m I will be tx on 21.015 or 21.055, 20m 14.015 or 14.055 on either working
simplex or up2 if there is a pile up.

My CW is SLOWER than the average DXer 12-16wpm so shouldn't have a problem
trying to copy me. I tend to ignore cw sent faster as I cannot copy it.

I was working US stations (all the way to East Coast) about 15:00UTC and after
that this morning so just before to just after local runrise.

In my opinion, antenna switching should either fully automatic or fully
manual.
I've had both, plus a mix. I've never had a problem when it fully one way

But for various reasons as stated in Joe's, it created problems, popped
diodes, what have you. The K3/KAT500/KPA500 can work either way.
DON'T mix the methods!! You'll surely be saying OOPS(Or worst) sometime

That OOPS can be expensive!!!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 hand mic's

2012-10-10 Thread Barry LaZar
Mike,
I have the MH3 on my KX3. The reports I have gotten are all
positive. I haven't done a thing with the TX equalizer, but I did crank
up the compressor a bit. With 10 watts PEP, I can get across Europe.

Re: [Elecraft] (K3) SWR Consistent - low or high power

2012-10-10 Thread Randy Farmer
It's pretty unlikely you'd see harmonic content on any kind of broadband
power sensor like a SWR meter. Even if the transmitter was really bad
and had harmonic levels only 40 dB down, this would mean for 100 Watts
output you would be getting 10 mW in harmonic energy, which wouldn't
wiggle anybody's meter very much. And if the total harmonic power at 40
dB down was just equal to the reflected power from your antenna
mismatch, this would mean the antenna would have a VSWR of 1.07. My
money's on diode nonlinearities at low power levels.

My theory in these cases is that it's nothing to do with bad antenna
connections, but more due to the rig putting out a higher harmonic content at
higher power levels. The SWR meter sees a bad SWR at the harmonic frequency
so the reading is slightly worse.

[Elecraft] KX3

2012-10-10 Thread zendoc

Hi Dominic -

Sounds like you're having a lot of fun out there in paradise.  Good
dx too.  My KX3 is about a month away, otherwise I'd really
have enjoyed a KX3 to KX3, island to island contact.

Have fun and take care,

Re: [Elecraft] (K3) SWR Consistent - low or high power

2012-10-10 Thread Don Wilhelm
Randy,

What you say is true only if working into a load that is not frequency
selective - like a dummy load.
If working into an antenna, that will be frequency selective and any
harmonics will increase the SWR indication.

[Elecraft] [KX3] Serial No. 2148

2012-10-10 Thread Phil Hystad
Serial 2148 of KX3 arrived by UPS today. Unboxed (just outer box) and already
took errata sheet to update assembly manual. But, still have to do inventory.
I am curious on whether I got the battery charger and real time clock. I had
heard they were back ordered. It is listed on my order sheet but no notice of
anything on backorder so I guess I have the battery charger and real-time clock
option. Yes, got to get to the inventory. Unfortunately, that will be
tomorrow night.

Re: [Elecraft] (K3) SWR Consistent - low or high power

2012-10-10 Thread Randy Farmer
My example assumes a worst case of 0 dB return loss at all harmonic
frequencies (i.e., the harmonic energy is all reflected). Any radiation
or other loss mechanism at the harmonic frequencies will just decrease
their reflected power and lessen their contribution to the total
broadband reflected power seen by the meter. The real situation is even
more complicated, as the directivity of the wattmeter coupler as a
function of frequency must also be taken into account to determine the
actual indicated VSWR.

Also, I should have said in the original post ... your antenna would
have a VSWR of 1.07 AT THE FUNDAMENTAL FREQUENCY.

2012-10-10 Thread K7MDL
K144XV uses it own dedicated ant input (ANT3), so not sharable with HF bands.
