Re: [Elecraft] K2: High SWR On Dummy Load
If you can clip the bad diodes off at the glass enclosures, you may be able to simply lay the new ones in place and solder their leads to the stubs sticking up out of the pcb, then trim the excess off. I can tell you from years of experience that a lot of field repairs are made that way on commercial equipment and they are as solid as sucking out the leads and installing parts in the holes in the pcb. If you do remove the heat sink, be aware that the thermal pads between the transistors and the heat sink may tear with some of the pad sticking to the transistor and some stuck to the heat sink. That's not a show stopper as long as you don't lose sections of pads. Just leave the pads alone. When you put it back together when you're done the pads will fit and work just fine. And do NOT forget to retighten the screws in the transistors after about 5 to 10 hours of operation. We are the same age so you'll probably remember having to re-tighten head gaskets on cars a short while after replacing them in the "old days". Re: [Elecraft] N1MM Setup
Hello Tony, Last night I changed over from a true RS232 CAT interface to a USB to Serial port converter. I had all kinds of problems with N1MM and Logger32 not recognizing the new set-up. Then I re-booted the computer and all worked great. You didn't say what you're using for a CW interface...I use WinKey. You can also use a single cable for CAT and CW keying. I used this once for a contest and it worked well. Here's how: *** At Dayton I heard rumors that the K3 (and the KX3) could send CW in N1MM Contesting program with no need for a second control line (RS-232 or Interface to key through the key jack). I searched the K3 mailing list and found this from Joe, W4TV: "You can use a standard USB to serial adapter to do PTT and CW with the K3 with no other interface. Set the K3's CONFIG:PTT-KEY menu item to rtS-dtr, check CW/Other on the "Radio" port in N1MM, set DTR = CW, set RTS=PTT and *UNCHECK* all of the "PTT via Radio Command" options." "The degree to which CW operates cleanly depends on other processes in your computer. You may or may not be happy with the results... " This weekend for the CQ WPX CW I tried it and it worked flawlessly! I have done a screen capture of the configuration screen in N1MM and posted it at: http://www.k8zt.com/K3_Keying_CW_with_N1MM.jpg *** I don't know if this will help but it's worth a shot. Re: [Elecraft] KAT100 ATU power metering - a question from VK7JB
John, If the KAT100 is used with the basic K2 (no KPA100), then the KAT100 will provide the forward and reverse power indication and those values will be displayed by the K2 during a TUNE. When the KPA100 is connected those forward and reflected values come from the KPA100. A similar calculation of SWR is done in the KAT100 to display the SWR on the LEDs. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/31/2012 9:28 PM, zen...@netspace.net.au wrote: > I've just finished building and calibrating a KAT100 to go with my K2 > / KPA100 combination. [Elecraft] KAT100 ATU power metering - a question from VK7JB
Hi Group, I've just finished building and calibrating a KAT100 to go with my K2 / KPA100 combination. The build was very smooth and the calibration routine straight forward. It's tuning my 80m loop, multi-band, just fine. I'd like to check my understanding about the SWR/Power metering with this K2 + KPA100 + KAT100 set up: Is the forward power value displayed on the LCD of the K2 during TUNE in this setup being measured by the SWR bridge in the KPA100? My understanding is that the forward power value IS provided by the KPA100 and NOT the KAT100. Is the SWR value displayed on the LCD of the K2 during TUNE measured at the KPA100 or the KPA100 bridge? Thanks for the clarification. The IF output [to a P3 or anything else listening to 8215 KHz on the IF OUT BNC connector] comes from the main receiver in the K3. 2. So far as I know, there is *no* IF output from the sub-receiver unless you home brew it. 3. "Earlier" K3 S/N's had a somewhat low IF output for a P3, which probably didn't exist then. Elecraft offers a mod [you're surprised? :-)]. It involves removing one SM resistor and replacing it with another. They supply both an SMD and a leaded-resistor, with instructions for both. I used the leaded one, works fine. 4. I don't know what "earlier" means, but my K3 is S/N 642 and I did the mod. Second biggest problem was disconnecting the nest of wires from my "wireless" to get it out to work on. Biggest problem was reconnecting all of them. 5. Somewhere in the delivery of "later" S/N's, the mod has been incorporated. 6. With the mod completed [really easy], and all the wires reconnected, I calibrated my S-meter to S9=50uV from my service monitor. The P3 then calibrated nicely so S9=-73dBm on the ordinate. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2013 Cal QSO Party 5-6 Oct 2013 - www.cqp.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I thought, "Boy, that's fast!" The tracking info said it would be here today. Well, a package did arrive, from Elecraft, but it was the KXBC3, for my KX3, instead of the KAT500! Shucks! Of course, I'm glad to have the KXBC3, but it isn't close to what I'm most anxious to have on the operating desk. Sure wish Elecraft would put a bit more info in their shipping notices, like what it is that's coming! I suppose that's too time consuming. Anyway, guess I'll have a beer and get ready for the onslaught tonight! Halloween! We tend to get lots of kids, which I don't mind. The reason we get so many is that we live in a relatively "enclosed" neighborhood development, with just two ways in and out, whereas most of the other homes in the area surrounding us are scattered all over the desert. So, lots of folks bring their kids here, from Lord only knows where, and let them do their thing! A little unfair for us here in the neighborhood, perhaps, but hey! It's for the kids! I think I have about an hour and a half before the doorbell starts ringing off the wall! Happy Halloween everyone! [Elecraft] KXDP3 and KXBC3 question
This is a question for the group and not Elecraft staff.not that I don't value their input but I want to be a good ham op and not do what I am told not too. My KX3 serial number is 1990 and the KXPD3 and KXBC3 were put on back order. I know the folks at Elecraft are shipping these items now but I was wondering if anyone close to my serial number has received theirs?? I know we are not to bother Elecraft with this question and that is why I am asking the group. [Elecraft] KX3's all over the CW/QRP bands
I'm amazed at what a high proportion of my contacts recently have been ops with KX3s. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with it being relatively new, so will get preferential use from hams who have plenty of options, but it still surprises me. I'm only doing CW and hanging about the QRP watering holes, but a WAG is that at least 1 in 3 of my contacts is playing with a KX3. Great market penetration! Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 insatall
If one looks at the schematic there is a JFET buffer between the IF and the IF out in the main RX. Isolation and impedance matching is its function. There is no stock IF out for the subrx and hence no JFET. JFETs have really high input impedances. A one resistor "gain mod" is on the K3 site reduces the signal loss in this JFET stage for those using the IF output jack. 73 de Brian/K3KO On 10/31/2012 21:10, ab2tc wrote: > Hi, > > I have absolutely no dip in the center of my LP-Pan display and I have never > heard anybody else having this problem either. Hi, I have absolutely no dip in the center of my LP-Pan display and I have never heard anybody else having this problem either. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - using ear buds
I'm a cw only op also. Over the years I've had custom made inner ear plugs, a Meyer Aviation Headset, Extreme Isolation headphones, Yamaha headphones, ear-buds of all kinds, ...etc...etc Every over-the-ears headset I've ever tried ended up hurting my ears. I ended up staying with el-cheepo Maxel stereo head buds: http://www.amazon.com/Maxell-HB-202-Stereo-Line-Silver/dp/B6JPRQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1351714933&sr=8-1&keywords=Maxell+HB-202+Stereo+Line+Head+Buds%2C+Silver%27+by+Maxell They are quick and easy to take on/off. They are so light, you forget they are on. You don't have to jam them into your ears. The only additional feature that would be nice is small foam cushion tips. -- bw...@fastmail.net __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

You should consider the JRC ST-3 headphones. I have used mine for about 15 years as an SWL and ham -- most recently with my new K3. I do not need to adjust the volume when switching from speaker to headphones (except for the CW sidetone) and the comfort and ability to hear both weak and strong signals are perfect for me. Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 insatall
I built my K3/10 and installed the KRX3 with no issues of different audio levels. BTW running both Rx with dual LP-Pan on MAP65v2.3 sw shows the audio level on a bar graph for each (when in diversity mode). Two things were recently done to improve use of the LP-Pan: 1) Enabling an open filter position in the K3 and KRX3 eliminates gain "suck out" by roofing filter which is connected in parallel with the IF output jack. It shows as a dip in gain on a panadaptor spectrum display at center freq. 2) Installed 32.860 MHz xtal in LP-Pan which is 4x the IF freg of 8.215 MHz which eliminates the previous +6 KHz freq. off set in the display sw (thanks to Larry, N8LP). My 2m-eme dual-polarity adaptive receive system will get a work-out in this weekend's eme contest. I whole-heartedly vote in for the Bose QC-15, or any of their noise cancelling mics. What they do to the background noise is the best of If all the competition and they are incredibly comfortable. I prefer the kind that completely cover your ears but they do make an on the ears version that will let outside sounds get through more than the full cover variety. If you need to have a built in mic, they do make an avionics set but that's very expensive. Me being a CW op & use a table mic for my rare SSB, the regular QC-15 headset is just perfect. Re: [Elecraft] Battery Charging
If it is true that all modern chargers and laptop supplies are switchmode (?), I can't immediately see why they shouldn't run from a suitable dc supply, since the first thing that happens in a switcher is to rectify the mains. Even my 5 year old stuff is universal input, ie very wide voltage range. So, they could pipe unregulated dc around the cabins. Each outlet would need to be equipped with a ptc protection device to protect the supply and the load in case a conventional device was attached. A plug-in accessory with a bridge rectifier in it would also do the trick. Sorry if this is getting off topic.
