[Elecraft] KX3 and TX5K on 160

2013-03-06 Thread Jim Sheldon
Good thing them guys out there on Clipperton are using K3's. Good antennas
over salt water don't hurt either. Even though I already had them on 160 using
the K3 and KPA500 from several days ago, when I heard them this morning about
11:20 UTC, I decided to try just one more and see if the KX3 would do it. My
antenna is not really very good, a quarter wave inverted L that's only up about
25 feet and no counterpoise, only an 8 foot ground rod right at the feedpoint.
The KX3 powered up at 5 watts on the internal batteries and I switched it to
the "L" and shut down the K3.

Used the PF1 macro to set Dual Watch on and split up 2 and then heard them say
they were "QSX 21" so the JA stations could legally work them. Cranked the B
VFO to 1821 and heard several stations calling them so I waited for them to end
a JA QSO and called them. Op came right back on my first call! If I never
work another DXpedition station with the KX3, I'll be happy - LOL.

Re: [Elecraft] Filter

2013-03-06 Thread david Moes
I currently have the 1.8 filter. and it works fine for me. however
don't expect miracles I am not sure it its really all that needed.
If you are in a location that you get a lot of very strong signals in a
contest the filter will help more when adjacent strong signals start
AGC acting on it and effect the level of weak signal you are trying to
dig out. however in most cases The excellent dsp filter will do the
work most of the time anyway and the added filter will not do much
unless the guy a few KHZ away is really strong.

On the other handin CW and digital using narow filters will
have a much greater noticeable impact as the signals are much closer
together.

They were so strong last night, I tuned up my 80 meter inverted V with the

This morning, I am hearing them 599 on the 80 meter V, so gave them a call
and they came back first call!! KAT500 easily tuned the 80 meter inverted V!

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Low Power Out / Hi Current

2013-03-06 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jeremy,

A high SWR will cause that behavior.
Make certain the coax you are using is good. Remove it from the K2 end
and check with an antenna analyzer if possible.
If you cannot do that, look at the SWR registered on the wattmeter - if
it is 1:1, remove the wattmeter and connect that coax to the dummy load
(no wattmeter).

In fact, one can not transmit above 2800 Hz (with the 2.8 KHz filter)
as the filter roll off (and perhaps DSP limitations) result in little

Re: [Elecraft] K3 S-Meter

2013-03-06 Thread drewko
Don,

I always seem to have my RF gain adjusted by ear to below where the
s-meter will deflect on a particular signal. So I will most always
have to readjust the gain to see an s-meter reading. The RF gain can
be adjusted much lower than the signal's meter deflection point but
still have an audible signal. A moderate strength signal can still be
heard when the RF gain has been turned down to the point where the
s-meter incicates s9+40 db.

The more I think about it the less useful it seems to have the meter
deflect upward with a lowered RF gain setting. Does anyone find this
action useful for tuning in a signal?

I know that I would be fiddling around with the RF gain control a lot
less if the s-meter display was not affected by the gain control. Why
not make the s-meter "absolute mode", which is independent of the
attenuation setting, also independent of the RF gain control? That
seems more consistent and logical to me.

Re: [Elecraft] Filter

2013-03-06 Thread Michael Adams
I wondered the same thing this time last year when I was ordering my K3.

If I had to do it again, I would choose:

- the FM filter (in case you want to tx/rx AM or FM). I got the AM filter
(not planning on doing any FM), but now that the firmware supports AM thru
the FM filter...

- the 2.8 filter for SSB. I also have the 1.8 filter, but I find I don't
use it much for phone, even during contests. I do use the filter when
tuning around for RTTY contacts, but I probably would be content with the
2.8 for this usage.

- the 400 filter for CW

- the 250 filter for RTTY & narrower modes in congested conditions.

I went with 8 pole filters mostly because I wasn't getting the second
receiver, but I didn't want to have to worry about crystal-matching if/when
I add it in the future.

Don't forget the BPF if you are in MARS or like listening around away from
the amateur bands.

Re: [Elecraft] Filter

If you're only going to use SSB the 2.8 8 pole filter will serve you well
nice skirts and maybe the 1.0 8 pole for the narrow would be all you need.
The suggestion for the GBP filter is a good thought then the FM filter also.

I do use the filter when tuning
around for RTTY contacts, but I probably would be content with the
2.8 for this usage.

[Elecraft] KAT500 and K3 Powering sequence

2013-03-06 Thread mark roz
On Monday I have contacted support at Elecraft but no answer.
So, does anybody know if KAT500 MUST be turned ON FIRST and than K3 - otherwise
K3 will not initialize correctly
(with DB15 cable connected as it should). Is this still the case? I don’t like
it as I have other antennas that will not be
connected to KTA500. I will not always need KTA500 to be on line. This just
doesn’t make sense.
KAT500 will be connected to pos. 1 of the antenna switch.
Could  firmware be changed in order to correct that?
Thanks, Mark

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 and K3 Powering sequence

2013-03-06 Thread GDanner
Mark,
My understanding from the manual is that the KAT500 must be on when the K3
is turned on for the Aux connection to work properly.
In my shack this is accomplished by connecting the KAT500 directly to the 12
volt buss; that way it is already on when I turn the K3 on. This works well
for me.
Probable doesn't matters if you elect to not use the Aux cable connection.

[Elecraft] KX3 schematics

2013-03-06 Thread Giancarlo Moda
Dear Wayne,

thank you for posting the note about the availability of KX3 schematic
diagrams. I was waiting for these since a long time, I was very courious to see
the mixers selected, there is always something to learn.

I would like to compliment the design team for the KX3 RX mixer. I thought they
were going to use a "classic" QSD using the FST3253, like in the Flex-1500 or
the Softrock, or similar to the one used in the TX mixer.

I like the RX mixer using the FST3257/74CBT3257, this one should have a lower
noise, going up in frequency, than a similar one using the FST3253.  This
latter device has an internal clock decoding and the balanced LO waveform
cannot directly control the switches gates, i.e. a 50-50 clock may result in a
49-51 signal switching, or vice a versa, while with the FST3257 the gates are
directly controlled by the clock waveform.

I garantee you I will not try to modify this mixer .. although I could have a
different solution ... hi

Congratulations again for a nice product

On Monday I have contacted support at Elecraft but no answer.
So, does anybody know if KAT500 MUST be turned ON FIRST and than K3 - otherwise
K3 will not initialize correctly

it as I have other antennas that will not be

KAT500 will be connected to pos. 1 of the antenna switch.
Could  firmware be changed in order to correct that?

Jeremy,

What range is your external wattmeter set for? If it is 100 watts or
200 watts, you will probably not get any deflection at 2.4 watts.

When the load is 50+j0 ohms, you can rely on the K2 display.
I suggest removing the external wattmeter and using the display.

K3 and KX3 owners who use Macs might be interested to know that the latest
update for Don Agro's Mac-platform logging software, MacLoggerDX, has added
Elecraft-specific functionality in his latest update, V5.46. Specifically, the
application now supports splits on the K3 and KX3.

He's also added support for a few additional rotators, the DZKit Siena and the

I know that I would be fiddling around with the RF gain control a lot

Re: [Elecraft] K3 S-Meter

2013-03-06 Thread Don Wilhelm

Drew,

The S-meter operates off the AGC voltage and cannot be controlled in the
firmware. The result is that you will "have to put up with it" Most all
receivers have done the same thing in my 50+ years of hamming.

What I can say is is that if you reduce the RF Gain to eliminate the
band noise level, and the S-meter now reads (for example) S-3, a signal
that is now indicating S-9 should receive a proper report of S-6.

Actually, the S in he RST report is better given with respect to other
signals on the band rather than as an absolute number. Report the "S"
in the RST report with your ears rather than what the S-meter is
indicating. For those who have operated older receivers, that is the
way it is done. If you look at the "S" report in the ARRL handbook, it
will indicate that is a strength relative to other stations on the band
rather than relying on a meter reading. DXpedition and contest contacts
are always "599" just for expediency.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Low Power Out / Hi Current

2013-03-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jeremy and all, the external wattmeter reading has to overcome the
diode drop in the wattmeter before it will provide deflection. At low
power levels it may show no response until the power is great enough for
the diodes to conduct.
The full scale reading of the wattmeter may be correct, but at low power
levels there is a certain 'threshold' below which some meters will show
no power output (regardless of the range).

I am glad to hear that you now have the bandpass filters peaked.

Subject: KAT500 and K3 Powering sequence

On Monday I have contacted support at Elecraft but no answer.
So, does anybody know if KAT500 MUST be turned ON FIRST and than K3 - otherwise
K3 will not initialize correctly
(with DB15 cable connected as it should). Is this still the case? I don't like
it as I have other antennas that will not be
connected to KTA500. I will not always need KTA500 to be on line. This just
doesn't make sense.
KAT500 will be connected to pos. 1 of the antenna switch.
Could firmware be changed in order to correct that?
Thanks, Mark

Re: [Elecraft] Remote Control of K3 With KX3

2013-03-06 Thread K7JLTextra
I have had several enquiries to be included in the responses but did not get
any responses from any one that has set up the complete package. Looks like an
Elecraft response will be required.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft W2 Watt Meter Build

2013-03-06 Thread Nick Palomba
Just say's 14lbs on the shipping but it was the W2 watt meter that came. I
suspect the K3 will be here tomorrow or Friday.

Re: [Elecraft] K1 transceiver kit won't transmit

2013-03-06 Thread Jim Wiley

Don -

I am Jim, KL7CC, helping Micah with his K1.

Further testing indicates the following: With PO set for 3.0 watts
(requested) we get approx 18V PP RF at the collector of Q6, and6V PP at
the base of Q7. NO volts RF at the collector of Q7, but the DC voltage
reads about 12.8 DC. Have not tried to peak all stages, but seems to me
that the problem is likely a toasted Q7. Watcha think?

Martin and Micah,

The information Gary gave you is exactly correct.
I would add three additional comments:
1) The oscilloscope should have a 10X probe for reliable readings
(otherwise use an RF Probe)
2) If you have a 4 band board, start with the trimmer slots parallel
with the long edge of the board - the final settings will not be more
than 20 degrees from that position. You must align 15 meters (or 17
meters) before 20 meters, and 30 meters before 40 meters (the band
order is not important for the 2 band board)
3) After peaking the Pre-Mixer bandpass at P1 pin 6, go on to peak the
TX Buffer output, and then with the probe still on the TX Buffer
output, go back and touch up the Pre-Mix again - the 'scope probe may
load the premix filter output a bit and must be tweaked again without
the probe on P1 pin 6.

Observe the sequence of alignment, it must be done in order. Let us
know where the expected RF voltages cannot be reached.

My son and I have been building a 20m & 15m K1 over the past year.
Great kit! It is assembled and we are trying to finish aligning the
radio. however, it will not transmit. We have tried signal tracing it
and cannot get a reading on any of the test points. Receiver works
fine. We did extensive multimeter testing and found that IC U8,
SA602AN, was out of tolerance. We replaced it but the transmitter is
still inop. A very kind Elmer will assist us with test equipment but
wanted to gather opinions from the reflector participants on how to
proceed. Just to bring all the information together here in one
place, the great folks at Elecraft shared the following recommendations:

Filter Board RF voltages using a scope at these filter board
connector pins:

P1-4 Premix oscillator signal 200-500mVpp
P1-6 Premix signal output signal 200-500mVpp (must be peaked with the
bandpass trimmers)

P2-1 TX Buffer output 1-3Vpp
P2-8 Filter board TX output to Driver 1-3Vpp
P3-1 PA output up to 40-55Vpp
P3-8 Output from lowpass filter 40-55Vpp

Vpp = RF volts peak to peak.
mVpp = RF millivolts peak to peak.

An RF probe will show the rms RF voltage levels, or about 35% of
these pk-pk values. Appendix E, or any ARRL Handbook shows how to
build an RF probe. We also sell an RF probe kit for $10. Use an
oscilloscope if you can get access to one.

Test the rig on all bands too. The filter board is difficult to align
the first time, so be patient when aligning it, and try to peak it on
signals in receive, or in transmit with an RF probe or scope at the
indicated places shown above.

Thanks.

[Elecraft] P3

2013-03-06 Thread Howard Hoyt
My P3 works well, however sometimes (like right now) it will make little
clicking noises as if a relay is turning on and off, and concurrently
the display will jump up and down.

Is it perhaps gain reduction caused by extremely strong signals in the
IF passband? The scale does not change. Is this normal operation?
