[Elecraft] Fwd: Fwd: Noob build question

2013-04-27 Thread David Fee
No worries, thanks a lot Dale.

I've put down the soldering iron and solder wick and will wait a while.

Cheers and 73dave / VE7SGI.

Hi Dave,
I am not where my notes are, but Don's are available... Or I can get back with
the answers in the morning
But I know you don't need to trim the led display. Since the switches are
spaced right... I'll get with you by 7 or so. Sorry it's not right off the top
for me.
Have a great day,

Hi Dale, thanks for the answer.

Yes, I was very careful to make sure all of the switches were soldered with the
spacer underneath them.

The front panel board "rocks" on what appears to be the led bargraph.

I checked the height of the bargraph and it's about 1.5 mm higher than the LCD
freq. display.

My choices seem to be A) cut down the feet on the led bargraph so it site lower
- even with the LCD display -or- B) space up the while board to fit the led
bargraph - which will make the buttong flush with the front surface.

Hm.

Thanks, cheers and 73dave / VE7SGI

Hi all.

I finally broke down after a few years of K2 envy and ordered a K2/10 with SSB,
NB and 160M.

I'm part way through building SN 7438 and have run into a problem.

I'm trying to fit the front panel board to the front plate and am having a fit
problem.

There are 3 short round spacers that set the clearance between the front panel
pcb and the metal front face.

When I insert the front panel pcb into the faceplate, the left side ( side with
the LED bargaph ) sits too high.

This causes the spacer to sit up off the face and the buttons to sit flush with
the face.

The other side fits fine, the buttons protrude partially through their holes
and the spacer bottoms out on the face.

I investigated the problem and it appears to be the led bargraph which is too
high.

The led bargraph has 4 little tiny feet which space it off the pbc, I have
seated the led tight to the pcb with the feet touching.

Before I unsolder the led bargraph ( groan ) and cut off the feet ( which the
manual said to leave on ) does anyone see somethign I'm missing - please ?

Thanks a lot for the bandwidth...

Cheers and 73dave / VE7SGI.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Announcement

2013-04-27 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
Weather has been quite nice this week unlike the propagation. But
the weather is getting worse so maybe propagation will improve. Without
the sun calling me outside it would be nice to be able to get on the air
reliably. I don't think there is an inverse relationship but one can hope.

Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Power control sensitivity with KPA500

2013-04-27 Thread Fred Jensen

H ... strange.

Mine isn't at all sensitive and once set, I never really touch it. One
thing ... like most Elecraft rigs, the instantaneous power out of the K3
will adjust on the first couple of dots or dashes [or syllables] to a
new setting. If I change the K3 drive setting, even by one watt, the
KPA500 usually hits 700W on the first dot or dash. After that, it
settles back immediately. The amp is a bit conservatively designed :-),
I've run mine on RTTY at 550W for a whole contest. I think it's just
the internal ALC working.

One thing I would like is instead of the K3 telling me the amp is in
standby or operate, it tells me the power the K3 is going to deliver
when I first tap the key after changing the amp status. The per-band
tune function has not worked for me on very rare occasions. I'm sure
it's pilot error, just don't know what I've done when it happens.

me to add 50W of KPA500 output when I really want, say, 10w or 20W, but
maybe I'm being too finicky.

I normally use the per-band tune menu option so it's only a problem when
adjusting the drive, of course.

I'd appreciate having a K3 menu item to adjust the sensitivity of the power
control.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Power control sensitivity with KPA500

2013-04-27 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jim,

If you want more precise power control at levels below 100 watts, why
not put the KPA500 into standby?
The KPA500 has approximately 15 dB of gain, so the resolution in power
output is 15 dB (31.62 times) worse than the power resolution on the 100
watt K3.

With the KPA500 in standby, the sensitivity of the power knob will be
31.62 times better than with the KPA500 active.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 -- Span slow to update

2013-04-27 Thread tomb18
Hi
I noticed the same behaviour recently as we'll.
In addition, it appears that sometimes the p3 will not issue a qsy either
from the hardware or via software either.
It seems to happen when there is a fair bit of rs232 activity to the k3.
Ill look at this in more detail in the next couple of days since I happen to
be in the middle of optimizing the communications Tito the k3 in some
software I'm writing.

[Elecraft] K6DGW QRPTTF

2013-04-27 Thread Fred Jensen

What a super day!! This was a joint expedition with Rich, NU6T, who
operated his KX3 on SSB on 20 and 15.

K6DGW QRP CW 20m Bald Mtn W6/SN-047 4 pts [4,613 ft]

QSO: 21 x
SPC: (10 +
Summits: 8)

378
x3=1,134 final score [we were on a registered SOTA summit worth a 3x
multiplier]

K2+AlexLoop
4Ah 4S1P LiFePO4 battery

WX: Fantastic! Mid 70's in shade, warmer in sun, light breeze, clear.
Quite a bit of pine pollen. :-( Almost worked a JA, couldn't quite
complete. Great breakfast in Georgetown, late lunch/early dinner in
Cool [that's the name of a little town not far from here. Metropolitan
Greenwood is about half way between Cool and Georgetown. Bumper sticker
there: "GREENWOOD -- Beyond Cool!"]

The Sierra foothills are laced with a variety of historic trails [and
gold mines], probably the most famous is the Western States Trail which
originally ran from Salt Lake City to Sacramento. It's across the
Middle Fork of the American River from Bald Mtn so we don't claim "close
to a trail," not that it would have changed the score. I live 1/4 mile
from the original transcontinental railroad [now Union Pacific], and a
mile from the Lincoln Highway/US40, so "Happy Trails" was a really great
theme!

Really fun time, great to get outside for some "Field Therapy" as Rich
puts it. Thanks to the organizers, about as perfect a radio day in the
field as it could get

Kenwood Heil adapter...red band

Gerd,

You did not say which microphone you are using. An electret microphone
needs bias turned on, dynamic microphones do not.

Did it work before? If so, what settings may have been changed.

Do not overlook the microphone itself. Does it work on another
transceiver? Does another microphone work on the K3?
If you have a variety of microphones, *most* Kenwood microphones are
dynamic type and will work with the K3 (bias off). Elecraft microphones
need bias turned on. Other microphones may or may not have the correct
mic plug pinout to work with the K3.
Heil microphones are a mix of dynamic and electret types, and must have
a Kenwood adapter to work with the K3 (all Heil microphones are not the
same, one must specify the complete model/type).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 PA temp acting up

2013-04-27 Thread Buck k4ia

Don - thanks

If I let it sit while turned on, the fan will bring the temp down, then
I can turn the power back up and operate at 100w. The fans keep the PA
temp around 45C. So I don't think the finals have gone - yet.

It is drawing about 2 amps with the power turned off but plugged in and
a little under 4 amps in receive when turned on.

I was biased toward the bias but don't understand why it is drawing 2
amps of current while turned off.

I have not installed the gold connector mod yet. KPA3CONMDKT Any
chance the problem is there?

Re: [Elecraft] No mikegain

2013-04-27 Thread Don Wilhelm

Re: [Elecraft] help requested

2013-04-27 Thread Don Wilhelm

Luc,

I really cannot tell whether you have a K3 problem or an antenna problem
with the information you have provided.
If you have access to a signal generator with a 50 uV output (Elecraft
XG1, XG2 or XG3 will do nicely), first connect it to the normal antenna
jack - you should see S-9 if your S-meter is properly calibrated. If it
is not S-9 you can calibrate the S-meter or somply note the deflection.

Next, put the signal generator on the RX ANT (turn RX ANT on) and you
should have the same S-meter deflection.

If the S-meter readings are substantially different, you have a K3
problem, but if the signal generator provides the same S-meter reading,
you have an antenna problem to solve.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 S-meter Reading with ATT on and PRE off

2013-04-27 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jay,

Normally, the preamp and attenuator will change the S-meter reading. If
you do not want that to happen, go into the menu and change to SMTR
ABS. I suggest (contrary to the manual suggestion) that you calibrate
the S-meter with the preamp and attenuator both off before setting SMTR
ABS, but the choice is yours. If you calibrate with the preamp on, then
switch to SMTR ABS, a 50 uV signal will read S-7 rather than S-9.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Resistance Checks

2013-04-27 Thread Don Wilhelm

Tom,

You will have to begin lifting resistors and inductors if you cannot
find a solder bridge by inspection. If you end up doing that, do it in
an orderly fashion and keep notes as you work - in the heat of
troubleshooting often the thought comes up which says "did I try that
already?" - notes will help with that question.

As Mike K8CN indicated, take a look at
http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K2-RF-Board-resistance-check-failure-U6-Pin-8-tt7559095.html#a7559102
and see if you can locate the fault using that procedure.

It is very unlikely that you have a bad component, but you should verify
the value of all resistors that are connected to the 8A and 8B voltage
rails.

Howdy Buck,

The first thing that comes to mind is that a strait key has something
on top of it, but I sure you checked that. Is it possible that there
is a short in a keying circuit or maybe a foot switch that has
something on it or is shorted out while the rig is set in the CW
mode?

I don't think having either situation could cause transmit unless the
rig is in CW or data mode.

Is the TX LED lit up?

Good luck finding it...

[Elecraft] Win4K3 Suite

2013-04-27 Thread tomb18
Well, my replacement for Windows for P3 is nearing completion. I now provide
full control of the Elecraft K3 with a number of unique features.
Fairly comprehensive control of the K3 with hold functions broken out of the
user interface. Point and click access to functions normally requiring BSet
or menu access.

Control of the P3 as before with Windows4P3 functionality. New: ability to
use a 720p web cam to display the P3 on your screen.
Control of the KPA500 from the same interface.
Inter-operability with Ham Radio Deluxe Logbook and any software that
interfaces to it including DM780.
Remote access mode: I have figured out how to stream the P3 video, so the
remote access mode will allow control of your K3, KPA500 and P3 from a
remote location. So far testing shows a 1-2 second delay for the video
updates of the P3.

You can see the software here
 http://va2fsq.com/wp-content/uploads/w4k3suite1.jpg

I am currently just doing some of the final tweaks before the beta test, and
I invite you to contact me off line to join the beta testing.

Requirements: Windows 7. XP may work but is not supported.

I expect the beta to be available in 1 -2 weeks.
Thanks fort all the help so far.

Virtually everything I saw on large ships used the "UHF" connectors.
Properly handled, they worked very well in the extreme marine environment
that included not just salt water, blistering sun and extreme cold, but also
corrosive stack gasses from the engines and a variety of other chemical
attacks, depending upon where the antenna was mounted.

Products like the putty-like coax seal kept the connectors free from any
moisture intrusion and looking like new for years. Connectors treated that
way outlasted the best of the coax cable jackets. We pulled them off to
replace the damaged coax, not because a connector had leaked or failed.

I prefer BNC's simply because they don't come loose easily in normal
installations. I've noticed a number of people here have had my experience
with intermittent operation and discovered that a PL-259 connector wasn't
fully tightened somewhere. A BNC tends to be on properly or not at all. And,
of course, a simple 1/4 turn disconnects them while the PL-259 requires more
fiddling.

Outdoors, I use either Type N or "UHF" connectors carefully tightened and
taped and add coax seal if they are exposed to the elements.

Re: [Elecraft] why mix rf connector types within the product, line?

2013-04-27 Thread glen worstell
In my experience, quality BNC connectors properly installed are very
reliable.

Cheap (e.g. Chinese) BNC connectors are not reliable, and should be avoided.

I have no experience with BNC connectors on large cables such as RG8,
but I would be concerned about stress.

For example, I highly DO NOT RECOMMEND the 25' or 50' cables with BNC
connectors on the end that are sold by Buddipole.

I use UHF outside and BNC inside, but am planning to see if I can
reliably install type N connectors, and if I can I will probably use
them instead of UHF.

Re: [Elecraft] why mix rf connector types within the product line?

2013-04-27 Thread Edward R Cole
Concur on some of what Jim Brown said, but have ordered high quality
cables from vendors that cater to commercial customers vs ham
vendors. For repeaters I used RG-223 cable with N-male connectors
from reputable vendors. Of course my employer paid.

I make almost all my cables as, I too, trust my own ability to chose
good quality components and do quality installation. I did make up
RG-58 and RG-8/x cables with crimp connectors where they were in
long-term installation. For test cables or any that are subject to
repeated movement my experience is the crimps eventually fail. I
still like them for the convenience (in certain circumstances).

At work I mainly used BNC or N connectors. Also had TNC and mini-UHF
on certain radios. Very few industrial radios use
SO-239/PL-259. Mainly seen on marine radios (and CB/ham, of
course). Aircraft radios use BNC a lot. TNC and sma are used quite
a bit will cellular equipment.

At work I had the $500 Times Microwave crimper with multiple dies for
different connectors. At home I have a $99 copy that does a fine job
on RG-58 and RG-8/x (or RG-6). But I trust compression nut style
connectors where I want absolute reliability.

I least like PL-259 as they are susceptible to shorting if overheated
in assembly. I use a ton of adapters, though one needs to be careful
with brand as not all are good. Amphenol PL-259 are what I use.

BNC is appropriate on the KX3 and other portable
equipment. Understandable that SO-239 are used for amplifiers,
etc. This topic is kind of no issue to me? If you were dealing with
50 contact connectors I might agree.

Using 1.41 fw version.

Is this a normal behaviour?

I think I read about this before but cannot find anything now.

VFO A/B and rit/ofs knob also, produce a 'creaking chair' type of noise when

Was there a discussion on this some time ago and if so a fix?

Not a big deal but still rather not have it.

Search Ebay for USB CW (morse code) keying cable with opto-isolator.

This is a UK seller who provided the cable in 5 days UK to Canada. and it works.

Finally I don't have to use the KX3 utility to key the rig via USB.

Perhaps one of the modern Android or Iphones has an application that will

Intriguing idea. In my case it will take the form of a lightweight psk-31
station. Our local club does FD every year so I may just use one of their
antennas or rig a 20m dipole (probably a sloper). I will break the 4#
barrier by bringing my old P90 IBM thinkpad that has a psk-31 program and
this will force me to make up a soundcard I/F for the KX3. I have a pile
of 12v 4AH gelcells which will suffice for power. Our club call is AL7LE
but there is some talk of using a better callsign of one of the members
(might be KL7RA).

With the combination of DUAL RX and NR or Autonotch, you may have loss of
audio, see "DSPT" (DSP timeout) or "ERR DSX" (DSP communications error).
Turning the radio off/on will clear any of these conditions. This can happen
when turning the controls on or off, or on exit from an ATU tune, etc.

We're looking into this. Until we release new firmware, please avoid using
these features in combination.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 AND P3 ADAPTER

2013-04-27 Thread Fred Smith
I have thought about this many times since I bought my KX3 and have started
doing a lot more QRP operation. About how nice it would be if there were an
adapter that allowed the KX3 to be tied into the line with the K3 and then
either could be used when the other was off. Is something like this even
possible with the KX3?

Subject: [Elecraft] KX3 AND P3 ADAPTER

Good to see the KX3 accessory amp and tuner will soon be available. I am
more interested in the adapter planned for using the KX3 with a P3, since I
find the panadapter scope very useful in checking band conditions and
basically just lots of fun. Any information on when this adapter for the KX3
might be available? Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] why mix rf connector types within the product line?

2013-04-27 Thread Tim Hague
As soon as everyone standardises on N types the better, easy to make, splash
proof, constant impedance, easily available, industry standard, rugged, it's a
no brainer...

Re: [Elecraft] 4-pound Field Day, anyone?

2013-04-27 Thread Edward R Cole
Intriguing idea. In my case it will take the form of a lightweight
psk-31 station. Our local club does FD every year so I may just use
one of their antennas or rig a 20m dipole (probably a sloper). I
will break the 4# barrier by bringing my old P90 IBM thinkpad that
has a psk-31 program and this will force me to make up a soundcard
I/F for the KX3. I have a pile of 12v 4AH gelcells which will
suffice for power. Our club call is AL7LE but there is some talk of
using a better callsign of one of the members (might be KL7RA).

Back in 2005 (I think) I set up a FD psk-31 station using my FT-847
and the same laptop. It was powered with a 30w solar panel + diehard
deep-cycle marine battery. My antenna was a 20m mobile whip. I was
set up in 20-minutes while the club usually takes about 2-hours to
get the first station running. Club name is the Moosehorn ARC.
