[Elecraft] K3 with SubRX and external Transverter

2013-07-03 Thread Marco Eggert
Guys,

I am currently using a K3 Ser#69xx with an external 2m transverter plugged in
the XVERTER IN/OUT BNC Jacks in the KXV3A module with great success. What a
combo, astonishing!

Now I want to add the optional second receiver. But I fear that I can not use
it, when the transverter is connected to the Xverter Jacks. I already tried to
use the second RX Jack, but it seems it is deactivated when using transverters.
As soon as I changed the XV1 PWR Setting to High, it worked. But then of course
I have to use ANT1.

Any ideas of how to use SubRX with transverter jacks?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-100 pop from TX to RX

2013-07-03 Thread DaveVK
Don,

I have fixed the mechanical buzz from the SSB tx on the KPA-100. The fault
was mine. Across the RF Aux input between the PCB and the heatsink there
seems to be a blue resistor with the colours Brn-Blk-Blk-Org-Brn with one
leg that was touching the heat sink. The legs are long and so I just pushed
it away with a screwdriver. I don't know what that part is doing there, or
why it is installed like a hack did the job but the memory of it is lost in
history.

I cannot find the part listed in the KPA instruction manual or any of the
upgrade kits. So maybe it doesn't belong there??!! But anyway, that problem
is fixed and the next time I'm in a position to remove the heatsink I'll
install that part properly.

I seem to have the upgrade kit installed and the blue cores are in the
KPA-100.

Now the popping is unsolved. It seems to be connected to the DSP. The
popping is most prominent on bands below 20m. When the DSP is bypassed the
popping disappears. I am still hunting this one down.

[Elecraft] K3 utility and F/W upgrade

2013-07-03 Thread Richard Fjeld
I just upgraded the utility and f/w for my K3. It went so smoothly, I said to
myself "I have got to complement the software people at Elecraft." And I do
complement them on a fine job.

Then, it hit me. No matter what, the S-meter goes no lower than S-9. It
indicates above it on a strong signal, but no lower. When I turn off the AGC,
the volume goes way down. I checked the config menu and all's well.

(The smart ones have already got it figured out.) The last time I used the
radio, I turned the RF gain to 12 o'clock.

Anyway, hat's off to those involved.

Hi Brian:

Other things to check are the connections to the rectifiers. They are also
spade connectors, any one of which could cause an intermittent. And, of
course P6 connecting to the PA assembly.

There are few things worse than an intermittent.

The other suggestion in the manual is to be sure the interlock switch is
being activated by the hardware attached to the top cover.

A simple way to do that is to *carefully* close the interlock switch
manually with the top cover off. I use a plastic rod for such things, but
the insulated handle of a small screwdriver works fb too.

Remember, you must cycle the rear panel power switch after getting that
error before trying again.

If that eliminates the error, disconnect power and check the interlock
switch and the hardware on the top cover to ensure it is secure. I recall
some time ago another fellow having trouble and traced it to loose hardware
holding the switch, so it could move and fail to actuate.

Next I'd be sure the transformer tap connector fits snugly on the terminal
and the unused taps are secured to the parking terminals as shown in the
manual.

Finally, suggest using a different transformer tap and checking your line
voltage level again to be sure it's not drooping at different times of the
day. Where I live homes are all electric, including electric heat. The 115V
mains can vary between 125V and 110V, depending upon the time of day.

And then, there's Elecraft Customer support - always an excellent resource!

I completed and fired up my KPA500 yesterday. it worked absolutely fine on

"270V Error". The interlock is ok, and that is the only thing the manual

Not only that - the centroid of a zip code can be in a completely

get close with the zip code but it will not be 100% reliable.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 Setup For Contesting?

2013-07-03 Thread Don Wilhelm

Scotty (and all),

Field Day is different things to different people. To some it is as it
was originally intended - an exercise in setting up a station in a short
time for simulated emergency conditions. To others it is a time to go
into the 'back country' and test out your latest homebrew transceiver
and portable antenna and see if you can make some contacts under adverse
conditions, and to others it is a time to get together with fellow club
members and have some socialization while making some contacts under
those simulated emergency conditions. For others it is a time just to
see if you can set up a station in the field (independent of power
mains) and make some contacts just to prove to yourself that you can do
it. Then there are the others who treat it as a contest - competitive
groups trying to see if they can muster the best score.

Pick whichever group you associate with the most and 'go for it'. With
folks of a like mind, Field Day can be a lot of fun as well as a test of
your ability to set up a station in the field and make contacts. There
is room for everyone, just pick your group with care. If you would
rather go it alone, I suggest trying class 1B with a battery powered QRP
station rather then trying to enter "contest' mode - just prove to
yourself that you can set up a station and establish communications
under simulated adverse conditions. That practice might come in handy
in a real emergency.

If you have a "Go Box" for emergency communications, try using just that
for Field Day and you will see just how effective your "Go Box" is and
make notes for what you need to add for the next time. Think emergency
preparedness and you will come back to the original intent of Field Day.

Yes, making contacts in crowded band conditions is an important part of
the process. While the "emergency" aspects in a real situation may not
involve battling QRM, it certainly could be battling QRN and other
distractions to communications. Confidence building in your capability
to provide communications under emergency situations is the goal no
matter how you wish to approach it.

I completed and fired up my KPA500 yesterday. it worked absolutely fine on
the 2 or 3 bands I tried. Today, when I go frm STBY to OPER, I get the hard
"270V Error". The interlock is ok, and that is the only thing the manual
suggests as a possible problem,.

I only found one example in the archives, and that led nowhere. Can anyone
suggest what I should be looking for?

Tnx.

[Elecraft] Another happy camper; SN7568 K3 has arrived

2013-07-03 Thread Rip R
It would seem that this may be a good time to say thanks again to both the
local hams who have been telling me about the qualities of the K3 and those
on this list who sent me their opinions/recommendations recently
off-list. Serial number 7568 is now operational and sounding just great; I
have been having a blast
with this rig the past few hours! Of course, reading the instructions,
menus, and settings may keep
me up late for a night or two. hi hi To say that I am impressed with this
radio so far would be an
understatement. Thanks again guys and see you on the bands. 73s Roger

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 Setup For Contesting?

2013-07-03 Thread Scotty Long
I said that and got laughed at...I beg to differ as it was key board to key
board CW full contest mode rude operators on 20m...30 to 40+++ wpm CW... No
casual fun operators it was full blow contest mode with everyone stepping on
each other... Just saying ... This is from a rookie ham licensed about four
years; that operates 99.9% other than optimal or nice operating conditions CW
all the time not just ARRL Field Day...You definitely need a contest grade set
up to compete in this non contest unless you work search and pounce during the
full ARRL Field Day contest. My Elmer's have told me this as well, kinda sad.
Try paper logging with a straight key or paddle running 22 wpm. Maybe the
other bands in the novice portions of the bands were better??? Who passes
messages on CW nets at 40+++wpm... If I ever run field day again and have to
run keyboards I'll use PSK31 or just use the cell phone and call around...Not
being negative just personal observations... please don't take it t
hat way... has it been this way from the beginning... ARRL does call it a
special contest in some of their advertisements...

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-100 pop from TX to RX

2013-07-03 Thread DaveVK
Thanks Don,

I will check the parts mentioned. I also have a feeling I may have some
common mode currents interfering a bit. I've recently put up a sloper under
the hex beam. I need to play with this. The pop on switch to RX is more
prominent on the lower bands. When I set the power to less than 10 watts
(KPA100 bypassed) the pop is not present. Also... to confuse matters
more when I bypass the DSP and set the power above 10 watts the pop when
K2 switches back to RX disappears.

I've had this problem before and cannot remember how I cured it. I think it
was by setting 8r to normal.

Many thanks... I'll keep this thread up to date with my progress.

Cheers,

Dave

[Elecraft] KX3 case

2013-07-03 Thread WM3M
FYI
I have been looking for a small case for my KX3 for travel and camping.
I bought one from MCM, it came today.
Item 22-15405 Black Weatherproof Equipment Case - 10.6" (L) x 9.8" (W) x 4.9"
(H) .
It is on sale for $7.99, includes break apart foam.
KX3 fits in it just fine with space for mic or other smalls items, completely
padded.
MCM shipping is more than the case.
The case is a China Pelican knock off but it should work fine for my use.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 display now blank? Help

2013-07-03 Thread Geoffrey Downs
Perhaps it could be temperature. About a year ago, whilst experimenting in
connection with another problem, I found that if I cooled my KPA500 down to
13C (about 55F) by leaving it overnight in an unheated part of the house and
then re-installed it into the shack, at switch-on the display lit up blank,
no relays clicked when a band button was pressed and there was no output but
if I waited for 10 minutes or so until the amp temp rose to about 18C
everything worked normally again. However, I never had a DISPLAY FAULT
message.

[Elecraft] OT: Ah, vanity (:-)

2013-07-03 Thread Ken G Kopp
I held W5TKI for many years ... then moved to Florida and dutifully
followed the rules at the time by notifying the FCC district office(s)
that I was operating "portable" away from my official FCC address.

When the time limit for doing so ran out ... two years? ... I received
a letter notifying me that I couldn't continue to operate as a portable
station and that an address change ... with new call ... was expected.

They gave me one of the new-at-the-time %*()*&%$# calls ... WA4HAA.
By that time I was the Frequency Coordinator for Florida and the Miami
repeater received WR4HAA. Confusion reigned.

Then came a Navy MARS call of N0SJP. still in Florida BTW.

2013-07-03 Thread EricJ
I was a victim of the early regs as I moved a lot (K1DCK, WA6YCF,
WB2PVW). My present call, KE6US, was a routine sequential assignment
when I got the Advanced. I was thrilled with it, then a week later I got
another call assignment by mistake, KE6VD. I was less than thrilled. I
called the FCC district office, and they straightened it out, but I was
afraid they would make me keep VD.

When I made Extra, I kept the "Advanced" call. I STILL can't get used to
2x1 calls. I have finally gotten used to A calls and N calls.

I got my current call through the systematic sequential assignment process

However, I believe there remains a very valid and useful application of the

Re: [Elecraft] 20 meter CW

2013-07-03 Thread Edward R Cole
OT but it is a shame that one cannot readily discern location from
the callsign, anymore.

I kept my K8MWA the ten years I lived in CA, but upgraded when I
passed the advanced exam in 1982 (at FCC in Anchorage). They assigned
me AL7EB. This had me confused all the time with KL7EB, a popular
ham in Anchorage, but at least I was not confused with as a rare
"K8 dx station" by Alaskans. If I had only gotten EC (my initials)
or ED my first name - oh well!

When I upgraded to extra I went for a vanity call and tried for KL7MW
as close to my old original license call...but I was not quick enough
and it was assigned to someone else. So I went with KL7UW to reflect
my interest in micro (u) wave (w).

To get a single suffix call I would have had to chose a weird call
like KL8M. There is already KL7M and KL6M in the area. Alaska has
run out of KL7, AL7, NL7, WL7, KL0, KL1, and KL2 calls and now
issuing KL3 to new licensees.

Another reason to change my call was for CW: . _... is terrible when
working eme; the "e" is lost in noise easily.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: "/XX" observations

2013-07-03 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Ken, you do what I do: Sign /7 when it's advantageous to do so.

I'm a K6 living permanently (since 1997) in Washington State. I'm not
portable, I live here all the time.

I rarely sign /7. To do so would take more time and is harder to get across
in marginal conditions than my normal call. I would expect a higher error
rate with a more involved call.

I do use K6KR/7 in the California QSO party, because if I called CQ as K6KR,
I'd spend a lot of time explaining that WA is not a California county, but a
state.

Similarly I sign /7 in the 7QP and Salmon Run contests, where I'm in the
target area. I'm not sure what I'm going to do in the IOTA contest, where I
will operate from the Washington State North group.

If I borrow a friend's station in California for a contest, I'm not going to
use K6KR/6 or K6KR/7/6. I'll use K6KR (or a station or club call he
prefers). Because the FCC rules permit me to do so and because it's the
easiest and quickest for me and my colleagues in the contest.

The FCC doesn't require that I sign /7, nor do most contest rules. The FCC
permits "self assigned designators" and no longer require "portable"
designators. If I visit Hawaii or Alaska, I'll be /KH6 or /KL7.

I lived in England where my G3 prefix was based on chronology rather than
geography, so I'm not that used to having a number imply geography. It can
sometimes help, but not always.

(MT) adds a bit more to the "scarce"
mix. The same seems to be true in DX'ing.

Since I have a "zero" call. I always sign "/7" in contests, but never in
day-to-day operation. The thinking is probably "oh, there's a "zero" ...
there are plenty of them and I'll get him later", but a "seven" is a "better
get him now, while I can".

Factor into this that in a CW contest one would never send "Montana" as a
section identifier, but instead sends "_ _ __"
(MT) which is often heard as "MO" (long dash as CW shorthand for "O"),
placing me in an incorrect section (MO) in the other guy's log.

But this can be an "advantage" when the DX is calling by call areas "de
/7K0PP" or "de K0PP/7". (:-))

Yes, it's the price I pay for not having a "seven" call for the last 35
years, BUT with my last name would -you- change my call? (:-) BTW, there
are 50+ "Kopp" hams out there.

I got my current call through the systematic sequential assignment process
33 years ago, after suffering 13 years with my original sequentially-assigned
call of WA5WGJ. I do not propose to ever change my current call, regardless
of my permanent location.

However, I believe there remains a very valid and useful application of the
traditional "/#" for any operation that is away from one's licensed location.

[Elecraft] KLH 970a SPEAKERS

2013-07-03 Thread Jerry Pittenger
When searching for a set of speakers for the shack to be used with a
switching system to several radios I decided on a set of KLH 970A 3-way
speakers. Actually in a thread some time back Wayne recommended these
speakers and was using them with his K3. They do sound great with the K3
but not so great with my FTdx5000MP. The Yaesu needed an outboard stereo
amp to get enough drive audio for stereo operation since the stereo out the
back of the radio is low level audio. I have since pulled the speakers.
They are like new. no scratches and in the original box. $25 plus actual
shipping. They aren't light but will fit in large fixed rate box which
costs about $15 to ship.de K8RA / Jerry

[Elecraft] OT: RARE GRID EL84!

RARE GRID EL84!!!

I know many EU 6m operators are very serious about collecting grids, and some are
even trying for the very difficult FFMA award (working all the continental US grids
on 6m). This grid will be in a spot where they will very likely have the opportunity
or multihop Es to EU, and NA, EME on moonrise and moonset, and will be active
throughout the period, due to the team of experienced operators. Please widely spread
the word about this amazing VHF DXpedition to a VERY rare grid in the USA!

It is a group of very experienced grid activators and EME'ers going out at an
ideal time with top notch equipment. They are looking for your support, but more
importantly, they are looking for your contacts on both 6m and 2m. Please mark your
calendars and don't miss this rare opportunity! GL to all VY 73, Lance

Hello everyone interested in the super rare grid of EL84. Here is our second update
and current situation:

We will begin our drive down to Key West on Tuesday, July 9th and plan to arrive at
the Yankee Capts berth at about 12 Noon on Thursday, July 11th. We will load our
gear on the boat as soon as the Captain is ready for us and believe that we will
depart Key West about 3-4PM local time. Pete, George, and Dan(see below) will be
flying into Key West.

K4N will be operational from July 11th(late afternoon or early evening local time) to
10AM local time on July 15th. I cannot give an exact starting time because we don't
know how long it will take us to set up the stations and the antennas after we arrive
in EL84 and Captain anchors the boat. 10AM local time on July 15th is 1400Z on July
15th, so there is no ambiguity there. After 10AM EDST on July 15th, we will tear
down, pack up, have the Captain bring the boat back to Key West, and begin our
journeys home.

K5YG-Bill(a.k.a. Bill2) has joined up with the group, so we now stand at 7
(brave?)
souls. The current group of "Un-indicted Co-conspiritors" are K5YG-Bill2,
N5YA-Bill1, N5NU-Jason, NR5M-George, K9PW-Pete, N5TM-Dan, and K5QE-Marshall. This
will constitute "The Magnificent Seven", the "Seven Samurai", the "Lucky Seven", or
some other hopelessly bad movie reference, for this trip. It seems to me that seven
were aboard the S.S. Minnow.

Bill1 and I have spent a couple of weeks rounding up all the bits of flotsam and
jetsam that will be needed for this DXpedition to come off well. Most all of it
is
stacked in a pile in Bill1's shack. We are trying to round it all up into a
small
pile so we won't miss anything. I am in receipt of Mel's "Emergency Repair
Kit" in
case I find my self with a PL259 cable in one hand and a Type N cable in the
other
hand that have to go together.

We will be operating 6M with two stations. Station1 will be a 756Pro2 with an
M2
6M1K2 amp and a 6M5XHP with a rotator. We plan to have this station on the air
almost continuously.on Es whenever possible and on MS when no E-clouds are
in
evidence. Station1 will operate on 50.165MHz for Es and on 50.265MHz for FSK441
meteor scatter. K4N will operate MS on First Sequence at all times.

Station2 will be a 756Pro2 with a Lunar-Link LA-62 and a DEMI preamp. The antenna
will be a 6M7JHV with Armstrong rotation. That means that a whole lot of antenna
swinging is not going to happen. My concept is to leave the 6M7JHV pointed at
WA(except when doing EME), which will cover almost all the country towards the west.

IF some big Es opening happens out to the west, we can always rotate the 6M5XHP on
Station1 out that way. Station2 will operate 6M EME when the moon is setting and is
below 20° of elevation. Station2 will operate EME on 50.195MHz First Sequence. During
EME operations, Station1 will either be silent OR they might try JT65a operations
over tropo paths. This would allow Station1 to take First Sequence and thus not
interfere with Station2 for the approximately 1 hour of EME operations.

Station2 will be operating on FSK441 on 50.270MHz First Sequence in the late evening
or early morning hours whenever Station1 is also running MS. My idea here is to have
both stations running FSK441 MS at night. Station1 will be covering everything from
the Dakotas eastward(more or less), while Station2 will cover the western US.

Bill2 is bringing along a 2M station this time. He will have an ICOM 7000 with
a
2M12 antenna and about 350W of power. He will run Es(if we get so lucky), any tropo
he can find, and FSK441 meteor scatter on 144.145MHz. He probably will try some EME
on 2M on our moonsets and maybe on the moonrises as well. That is his call

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 Setup For Contesting?

2013-07-03 Thread Jeff Kinzli N6GQ
Being an avid contester, and having used the KX3 in numerous contests
already (both stateside and as a DX station), I think it makes a great
contest radio.

One of the first things I'd suggest is considering trying it on CW rather
than SSB. If you don't know CW, this is a great time to learn, and I think
you'll find its a LOT easier to make QSOs on CW as opposed to SSB when
conditions are not excellent. On CW, with very modest antennas, I can work
stuff in the noise with my KX3 and 10w, but on SSB, they have to be strong
in most cases before I can make a QSO.

I'd also strongly recommend ditching the /QRP piece. When I'm running a
pileup, the last thing I want to hear is /QRP or /MOBILE - those are
irrelevant to the contest, and actually, IMHO, hamper your ability to make
the QSO. As previously stated, the idea is to make lots of QSOs fast, and
so to be efficient, you want to send what's relevant and necessary, not
extraneous stuff, like /QRP, /MOBILE, "please copy...", "thanks for the new
one", or any of that. For any DX station, the band is only open for a
finite amount of time, and if there's a pileup, ever extra word you or
someone else throws in is taking time away from other QSOs. That said, I'm
not trying to suggest that this is always the case, clearly there's times
when DX stations are calling CQ with no takers, and in those times clearly
the demand is much lower...

For antennas, as others have said, try to make them as efficient as
possible. This means full-size, resonant, and usually as high as possible.
Try to avoid shortened, compromise antennas, and try to avoid using the
antenna tuner if you can. If you can get some directionality that will help
too. Of course, if you are limited in $ or other factors, its hard to beat
a dipole 1/2 wavelength high or higher for bang for the buck.

The KX3 is a pretty easy radio to operate - not a lot of tweaking is needed
to make it functional - mic gain settings, compression settings, and
equalizer settings will help, and in those cases the archives are full of
suggestions, but try to minimize the lower bass frequencies with the
equalizer, as those are essentially wasting the small amount of power you
have.

Have fun though and put your time in, and you'll find your way!

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-100 pop from TX to RX

2013-07-03 Thread Don Wilhelm

Dave,

What is the T-R delay set to? If it is set to zero you may hear a 'pop'
when going to receive. Why it is not heard if 8R is set to normal is a
mystery to me.
If you have the KDSP2 installed and your KPA100 is not up to date (blue
toroid cores at RFC1 and L16) that pop would appear on *some* K2s. The
cure for that is to update with the KPA100UPKT. If your shield is not
up to date add the KPA100SHLDKT. The new shield has clips to contact
the sides of the K2, a narrow notch at the SO-239 jack, solder lugs to
connect the outside of the shield to the SO-239 and a speaker shield.

I have no answer for the buzzing. Is it in sync with the speech
patterns? If so, then your assumption about something loose is probably
correct, but I would expect something other than a toroid - perhaps the
KPA100 shield.

[Elecraft] [K3] Low output 160/80m

2013-07-03 Thread Allan G Duncan
I recently acquired a used K3 from a silent key with a large number of
options fitted. I already own another K3.

I have stripped it down to be a K3/10 to simplify fault finding. The only
option fitted now is a KXV3 interface. I fitted the bypass link in place of
the KPA3. All tests are done with a high quality 50 ohm load.

There is no RF output on 160m and only about 4-6W on 80m (It varies in
level, presumably with ALC action). The other bands are all fine on both RX
and TX. Receive on all bands (including 160/80) measures OK using my XG3 as
a test signal. Using a 50MHz scope around the BPF area does not show and
obvious fault with the K3 in TX mode with a cw carrier. The RF power output
control works as expected on all bands except 160 and 80.

The TX Gain calibration routine in the K3 Utility fails immediately as the
first band it tries is 160m.

I'd welcome any comments before I start swapping boards between my two K3's
