[Elecraft] Elecraft[low power] We span the Atlantic
Dear OMs and Yls, Okay the subject line is rather hoaky but I write to tell you that a wet string sometimes works.Brought up in the sixties on radio, I remember the bunkum adverts for the Gotham Vertical. Two months ago I worked a South Carolina station using a KX3 and AlexLoop inside his room and this impressed me a good bit.I have a KX3 waiting for me in Connecticut and was looking for a portable antenna to use with it. I still doubted the AlexLoop would be an adequate antenna. Tonight using a friend's AlexLoop inside the shack I worked across the pond thirteen times between 19:36 and 21:52 using 9 Watts from the K3. This antenna measuring just under a meter in diameter was sitting on my easy chair. I am pretty impressed and you can take it Hugh that I will purchase one for my self. This antenna collapses into a case 41 x 27 x 9 cm in size and weighs perhaps 1 kg with the case. Surely a long wire out the window would out perform the AlexLoop (magnetic loop antenna) but it is not always possible to drop a quarter wave length out the window.I am not saying these QSOs all came easily but many answered on my first call but of course it was near the end of the contest and replies were becoming harder to obtain.I believe the AlexLoop with my KX3 is going to prove fun while visiting the USA. States and Provinces worked during WAE: VY2ZM NS N8BJQ OH K1LZ MA W2LK NY NY4ANC AA3BPA VE3AT ON K1RX NM K3WW PA KE9KI IN W1EQ CT NB1N MA K3WI MD All of this was done on 20M CW earlier I was on 17M and worked six EU stations in a short period of time. I have also managed two QSOs on 30M. The antenna works. It is not near the equal of a 14AVQ with single ground rod but my need is to be able to make CW QSOs when away from home. The power limit for the antennas between ten and twenty watts. I would think no more that ten watts for data modes and perhaps it is better to stay to ten watts maximum when on CW. Normally from my home QTH in Ireland I run the K3 at 65W to a 4 element SteppIR up 80 feet. I run 1500W now allowed in EI for contests. There is no comparison between capabilities. This morning I found nothing on 20M with the Alex loop and then went down to 30M to search out a couple of QSOs. It is never the case that 20M is dead with the SteppIR but the AlexLoop can travel with me on a plane and I can make QSOs and keep my fist active. QRP is 5W but QRP into a Yagi is not the same as 9W into an indoor AlexLoop. When one has worked most of the DX entities currently active this adds a bit of zest. 73 Doug EI2CN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2/K3
If you are only using the High side switching from the KRC2, removing D4 will work fine for you. The low side switching will continue to function. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/11/2013 11:57 PM, Pfizenmayer wrote: I have a KRC2 using the AUX bus which works OK , switching the RATPAK 5 6 remote box and showing the LED indicators of the RATPAK switch box. I would like to be able to turn off the KRC2 to allow manual switching of the antennas - I am feeding 12vdc to the SOURCE driver terminal strip J5 in the KRC2 and if I turn off that supply , there is a diode D4 that feeds 12 vdc from the normal DC input jack on the KRC2 to the SOURCE driver Vbb so even if I turn the other 12v supply off , it stays latched on the last band . If I remove the 12 vdc feeding the microprocessor , but leave the AUX BUSS on ACC connected , the K3 freezes and will not reboot .If I remove the conection between the KRC2 and the ACC connector , then it will reboot and is normal. Is this normal AUX bus behaviour ? If so looks like I will either clip D4 - or ressurect my relay switch box to completely isolate the 7 wires from either KRC2 or the RATPAK manual switch to the remote switch box. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Please allow me to hijack this thread to ask about low power draw computers for use with the K3. Last field day I set up our club's digital station with a K3/10, SignaLink USB, and a MacBook Pro. The combination worked very well, but the MacBook Pro, connected through the Apple power adapter and a Radio Shack inverter drew 3 to 4 times as much power as all the rest of the system. I used the Elecraft USB -- RS232 cable for rig control. So I am looking for a computer that runs on 12 volts and draws a minimum amount of current. It should be low noise and all those other good things as well. My OS preferences are in order: MacOS -- because I know it, flavors of Linux -- so I won't have to configure a Windows system and deal with Microsoft's license verification, and finally Windows. On the MacBook Pro I was running cocoaModem and RUMped. I expect on other OSes I will run fldigi and a contest logger to be names later. Does anyone have any suggestions? well look at a netbook . or a small tablet pc and use a external battery and not a inverter. You might try the various automotive multimedia PCs. All of them are 12V, and some have pretty decent power savings modes. Here's an example from Mini Box: http://www.mini-box.com/VoomPC-2-Car-PC-with-Intel-Atom-D2700DC-board?sc=8category=1543 That one can run Win7-32. 73, matt W6NIA On Mon, 12 Aug 2013 06:27:48 -0700, you wrote: Please allow me to hijack this thread to ask about low power draw computers for use with the K3. [Elecraft] Simplest ever mod for K2
This is such a simple and quick mod I have resisted posting it, but I do feel it makes a small, not totally aesthetic difference. As an amateur astronomer, I always blacken the edges of eyepieces and objective lenses to enhance contrast. I did the same thing on the K2 bezel and I believe it does enhances contrast (at least during the day with high ambient light levels) and improves the appearance of the bezel by eliminating the hazy edge around the clear plastic. Just take a magic marker and carefully run it along the edge of the bezel (after removing it from the radio). Let each length and width dry before continuing to the next portion. It's literally a 5 minute job. I've been fortunate to be able to check in fairly easy from Alaska. Maybe because skip favors the roughly 1600mi path to Phil or the longer path to N6JW (who is generally stronger). I started out only running the K3/10 at 10w a couple years ago so that is pretty good. It was more difficult conditions, yesterday, though I was copying NS7P. I used N6JW sweep to check in easier. I love the Via C7 Eden processor, but unless you have one around to test, I wouldn't buy one for this application without doing a lot of testing. Why? Re: [Elecraft] new computer advice suggestions for using with a K3
I'm using an Atom for one of my IRLP nodes (7962, CentOS 6.4) and file server. It is mini-itx (small), doesn't use much power (~10 watts) and lowers power (slows, not off) when the need is low. It has a SSD so there are no moving parts, including no fan (I keep it in the air path of the radio fan just because I can). Although the docs say it is limited to 4 GB it runs great on 8 GB. I minimize access to the SSD for improved longevity. It is not screaming fast at 1.66 GHz, but could be adequate for your needs. However, you will find that most of your computer energy draw is from the display (Atom is CPU only). That can be significant. Turning the brightness down (easier at night) can save a lot. A small I-3/5/7 CPU based laptop (because they conserve energy better) is likely the simplest complete package to purchase. They can be found cheaper than the Atom system I built (I needed a real parallel port). Perhaps use Linux (or Hackintosh to set up your OS since you already use a Mac). Failing that, Win7 is preferred over Win8, which is still developing (bleah!). Win7 is a mature and stable product. 73, Rick wa6nhc Tiny iPhone 5 keypad, typos are inevitable On Aug 12, 2013, at 9:48 AM, Lynn W. Re: [Elecraft] new computer advice suggestions for using with a K3
Clock speed is almost completely meaningless, even comparing processors from the same manufacturer. A good example is the Pentium 3 and Pentium 4. The P3 ran at half the clock speed (or less), but it took significantly fewer clocks to do an operation. The difference was so significant that the next generation Intel mobile processors were more closely related to the P3 than the P4 -- because power is consumed on on the clock transition and not during the steady-state in between. It only matters when you're talking about the same processor at different speeds. 73 Doug EI2CN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Loop antenna's
I read the two posts about the MFJ loop antenna and thought I would add my own personal comments on my experience’s with loops. Years ago, I bought a MFJ 36” loop with the remote tuner and while it worked from indoors from 30m to 10m, it wasn’t earth shaking. I was always the weakest signal in a round table. That was when MFJ was still recommending using the loop in a horizontal position rather than vertical as they do now. Now, I had been reading some reviews on the MFJ loop antenna tuners and decided to get one and try it out. I got the MFJ-935B tuner that comes complete with the tuning cap and matching cap plus a RF current meter for tuning, so all you need to add is a loop to make it work. 3’ dia. loops are fine for the higher HF bands, and if you are going portable with it, then it might be the right antenna for you, but if you are living in a antenna restricted home as I am, and have to use indoor antennas let me tell you that I have used many different configurations of antennas and find that the loop is working the best for me, so far. I have used a Super Antenna MP-1 coil loaded vertical like a mobile whip, I have used homebrew Buddipole, and various indoor doublets so I have some data to compare them to. I use the Reverse Beacon Net for getting accurate reports back on my signal with the various antennas. As I said above, the 3’ dia. loop is fine for the higher bands, and OK for 20m and 30m but if you want to really get out as good as you can, then the homebrew loop that is bigger, is the way to go. MFJ says that a 7 foot wire or copper tube will make a loop to go with their series of loop tuners that will cover 20m, 17m and 15, and it does, but, if you want to maximize your signal on 20m the way to go is to use a 13 ft. wire or tube which doesn’t make that big of a loop and gets out a lot better on 20m.. My 7 ft. loop got a 12 dB SNR from K7EG RBN and the 13 ft. loop got a 18 dB SNR from him just a few minutes later and at the same power input from my K3. On 40m MFJ says a 20 ft. wire will tune 40m and 30m and it does, but a 28 ft. wire will give you maximum output (for a mag loop) and it does. I think I got about 8-10 dB more out of the 28 ft. loop than the 20 ft. one on 40m. MFJ says you can hang these larger loops form a curtain rod or draped over a bookcase and that’s what I do, it’s not critical but you do have to be very careful and not touch the loop when transmitting as there is a lot of RF in that loop. I made two PVC standards that sit on top of my bookcase/desk where I operate from and have the 28 ft. wire forming a square shape hanging from the top of the standards, coming down to a shelf just about eye level and I have the tuner there so I can adjust it as needed. With this loop and the K3 at 5 watts I contact my buddy Dale, K6PJV up in Sacramento just about anytime I want to, just fine from Marina Del Rey, CA and remember this loop is indoors on the second floor of my home. That’s almost 400 miles. On 20m with the 13 ft. wire in a diamond shape on a cross piece made out of PVC that sits on the tuner, I work AL7V up in Juneau Alaska with 50-100 watts on a pretty regular basis in the mornings. So if you are restricted to indoor antennas you might find the loop antenna is the way to for you. Usual disclaimer, I don’t work for or have any financial attachment to MFJ, just a happy customer. 73, Bill k6mgo __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Simplest ever mod for K2 will also work on KX3
I'll assume you did not assemble your KX3. The screws that hold the display bezel on thread into standoffs attached to the control board. IIRC, the 5 screws that hold the bezel (4 around the display, one below the VFO A knob) are the only screws that hold the control panel in place. Use caution when disassembling and reassembling. I suggest you download and read the KX3 assembly manual, beforehand. 73, Bruce N1RX Great idea, I can see it working without doing it. Should also work nicely on the KX3. Re: [Elecraft] Simplest ever mod for K2 will also work on KX3
It's not quite that simple, Arno. Those screws go into F-F standoffs that mount to the pc board behind the panel. In addition to the four visible screws there is a black flat-head screw under the tuning knob. Complete details of the assembly are in the Kit Assembly manual. You can download it from the Elecraft web site here: http://www.elecraft.com/manual/E740164%20KX3%20Kit%20Assembly%20Manual%20Rev %20G2%20WEB.pdf Be sure to take ESD precautions working inside your KX3. I would recommend that you: 1) Open the KX3 and remove the batteries (if used). 2) Carefully unplug the ribbon cable from the front panel board to separate the two halves of the case (page 35, Fig 52/53). 3) Remove the tuning knob (Fig 20 pg 17 and Fig 18 pg 16) and the encoder (Fig 15 and 16 pg 15) to avoid stressing the connector to the front panel board 4) Now you should be able to remove the five screws to free the bezel. The front panel board will float free inside the KX3, held only by the small push-in knobs. 5) Replacing the bezel be sure to align the screw holes and do NOT over-tighten the screws (Fig 14, pg 14). You can crack the bezel by over-tightening. 6) Reverse the above process to reassemble your KX3: replace the encoder, tuning knob, ribbon cable, batteries, and reassemble the case halves. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Arno Dienhart Sent: Monday, August 12, 2013 2:12 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Simplest ever mod for K2 will also work on KX3 Great idea, I can see it working without doing it. Re: [Elecraft] Good Battery for K3 Portable Ops
Paul, You did not say whether that is a K3/10 or K3/100 and whether you have the extra current draw of the subRX, nor what your transmit power level would be, so we cannot give you a realistic answer. If you are backpacking, you will want the least weight, but if you are going to a picnic table from your vehicle and have a hand-truck to carry the battery, I use a 75 ampere-hr AGM battery. If I have to carry the batteries in my hand, I operate at 10 watts or less and use a couple of 7AH Gel Cells (SLA). I like the reliability and safety of SLA technology despite its heaver weight than more modern battery technologies. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/12/2013 5:36 PM, PGrig wrote: I would appreciate knowing the experiences of folks who have run their K3 on battery power for several (4-8?) hrs., with perhaps a 20% TX duty cycle. Re: [Elecraft] Good Battery for K3 Portable Ops
Hi Paul, I run my K3 at 100 watts out using a 35 Ah SLA battery. (Powersonic PS-12350NB) I chose that size because it is about the heaviest one I can lift easily. I have run it for hours, in fact have never been able to run it down. Good idea to get a Powersonic charger that matches the battery, too. The service life of the battery is extended if you keep it topped up. Another nifty accessory is an N8XJK Marine Booster that goes between your battery and your rig. It outputs 14.1 V so long as the battery voltage is above some preset value --- I use 11 V. --Oliver W6ODJ On 12 Jan. 2013, at 14:36 PM, PGrig pgrig...@gmail.com wrote: I would appreciate knowing the experiences of folks who have run their K3 on battery power for several (4-8?) hrs., with perhaps a 20% TX duty cycle. It's a K2 Energy lithium ion and weighs just a few ounces. Couldnt be happier with it. After 4 days of off-on operating, still produces 12.4 volts. [Elecraft] K2 SSB TX audio question
K2 serial number 3600+ using the Heil hand mic that Elecraft sells, also did the KI6WX wide-band mod years ago. When on LSB using the elecraft recommended settings of SSBA of 2-1 and SSBC of 2-1, I get lousy reports that there's too much base in my audio and hams find it hard to hear what I'm saying, but when I turn off compression I then get really good audio reports! So, for the K2 wizards out there, as long as I leave the compressor off, my hams friends are happy...so, I'm wondering why turning on compression increases the base response and if there's a way to improve audio when using SSBC 2-1? I've used Spectrogram to slightly adjust audio filter bandpass but doesn't do much. [Elecraft] K3 - diversity mode running split
All, Apologize if this question has been asked before. When handling pileups, I've always used the following setup and it truly works FB - run split, lock the TX frequency, and use the main VFO to listen up/down for stations. Over the weekend I installed a RX only loop antenna(Pixel Technologies RF-Pro1B), and connected it the Aux RX input. I then enabled diversity mode, linking both main and sub receiver VFO(s). The sub-receiver was setup to use the Aux RX input, and the main's RX TX used Ant#1 ( the vertical). Needless to say, I was extremely impressed with the outcome, and my ability to pull out the weak signals on the low bands. Diversity mode even helped strong signals compensate for QSB. I was so impressed, that it got me thinking if I could run a pileup utilizing diversity mode in an effort to maximize the capabilities of both antenna's. My question is, will the K3 allow me to do the following, at the same time? 1) run split 2) run in diversity mode 3) lock the TX frequency 4) use the main tuning knob to change my RX frequency 5) Automatically have the sub-receiver follow adjustments made to the main RX settings (i.e. VFO, filter, filter BW, PB, NR, NB)? Re: [Elecraft] Good Battery for K3 Portable Ops
Thanks for all replies. I'm looking for a lithium iron [etc] battery that will fit inside my K2. I have found some that will fit - or so it seems - but none of them use all the available space, and as a result, are less powerful than might be had if all the space is used. Of course, external batteries are no problem. Some comment, as do I, that I'd like a battery to fit inside the K2 for grab and run applications. The Elecraft SLA is nice, but as I'm sure the top honchos would admit, battery technology has moved on. I think that 10ah can fit if the form factor is right. I've thought of buying individual cells and assembling something, but at this point in my much-reduced-parts-bin life, I'd just as soon buy something. Does anyone have any experience with installing a LiPoFe in the K2? That would be interesting. ...robert On 8/12/2013 22:41, Robert G Strickland wrote: I'm curious what you mean by a K2 energy lithium ion [battery]. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - diversity mode running split
Hi Robert, Think of diversity as removing the Sub RX from the VFO-B knob. When in diversity, the VFO-B knob is only useful in the control of split transmit frequency (if you are in Split mode). It has no affect on the Sub RX frequency. So you should be good. Turn on Split, Lock VFO-B to maintain a constant transmit frequency and rotate VFO-A (and simultaneously your diversity Sub RX) to listen to the callers. Similarly when in diversity making changes using BSET should be irrelevant. The Sub RX will follow all of the settings of the Main RX. There should be no need to double tap A-B. I say should be because I never actually tried making changes using BSET while in diversity. I also have the Pixel and am happy with it. 73, Mike K2MK Robert Fanfant-2 wrote All, Apologize if this question has been asked before. In a pileup I can't see going into BSET to change individual sub receiver settings to match the changes being made to the main receiver settings. Tapping A-B twice, each time I change/adjust settings of the main receiver, might get a bit tedious. [Elecraft] mfj 1786 loop antenna
From Steve: -- Greetings, In my quest to find a low profile antenna, I've looked at a lot of possibilities. I was curious if anyone has and experience with the MFJ 1786 loop antenna. ... Thanks and 73, Steve KS6PD -- Keep in mind that reports of dx contacts on low power are useless for comparing one antenna with another. Some Old-timers may remember working stations with a low-cost dummy load (a lightbulb) years ago. I built a loop antenna out of copper pipe some years ago, and it worked fine. I suggest that a dipole cut for 1/2 wavelength at the desired operating frequency is likely to work better. Small antennas have higher loss. My mobile antenna is small, too, and is probably only about 10% efficient on 40 meters, but I have no trouble working lots of folks even though the 200 watts I put in to the antenna results in radiating only perhaps 20 watts. So, if you have the room, put up a larger antenna. If you want portable, consider a Buddipole. If circumstances dictate that the MFJ or Alexloop is the best thing to use regardless of low efficiency, go for it! cheers, Glen, KG0T __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Loop antenna's
Let me throw some stuff out. Electrically small loops can work out very well if they are constructed correctly. I was impressed with the Alexloop that one of our Field Day operators brought to the site. It was used for an unrelated station on site that the operator was using to demo his new KX3 using PSK-31 on 20 meters. He had the loop because he wanted a portable antenna that might work. The Alex fit his needs nicely. However, there are much more effective antennas that can be used in a fixed location. One of those antennas is a 1/2 wave dipole up in an attic, fed with open wire to a point below the ceiling where there is a transition to coax using a balun and a tuner. The 1/2 wave length is dependent on room available in the attic, and it doesn't need to be in a totally straight line. The antenna can have some bend at the end. The antenna tuner will work out the impedance issues. I put one of these up for a friend who has a two story house with a very high pitched roof and enough room to install 66' of wire. He has been happy working 40-10 meters. My friend lives in an antenna restricted development just as the initiator of this thread. And lastly, A loop antenna made of wire the traces the outside roof periphery using insulated wire colored to match the roofing will also work well. It can be fed just like a loop sky wire ( shown in ARRL pubs). Your neighbors won't see it and it can work out pretty well. I would get too anal about total wire length as open wire is pretty low loss stuff, even at very high SWR, and a balun and tuner will take care of the issue with coax. Just make sure that the tuner is as close to the open wire as possible. Antennas are fun. Every ham has his own idea about what is best. I make no claim as to how close to best these are, but they do work. Best of luck. 73, Barry K3NDM - Original Message - From: Bill Ross k6...@verizon.net To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, August 12, 2013 3:50:17 PM Subject: [Elecraft] Loop antenna's I read the two posts about the MFJ loop antenna and thought I would add my own personal comments on my experience’s with loops. With this loop and the K3 at 5 watts I contact my buddy Dale, K6PJV up in Sacramento just about anytime I want to, just fine from Marina Del Rey, CA and remember this loop is

Ron, The salient part can be seen at the very end of this post. Sorry if I cut off too much information. It was from George, who said he just did his KX3 with no problems, to later elaborate how he did it: Removed the Knob. Then removed 5 screws. Ran my black marker around the outer edge 3 times. Set in place and redo 5 screws. Replace knob adjusting it against the felt washer for my desired feel. Less than 10 minutes. 72 George/W2BPI This appears to be done with an assembled KX3. Maybe George can confirm this. If it is so, Ron, could it be that there is actually no risk to do it this way, or was George just lucky? Thank you, and I am holding off with it until it is clarified. 73, Arno K7RNO -Original Message- From: Ron D'Eau Claire [mailto:r...@cobi.biz] Sent: Monday, August 12, 2013 20:04 To: 'Arno Dienhart'; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Cc: w2b...@aol.com Subject: RE: [Elecraft] Simplest ever mod for K2 will also work on KX3 ??? No idea who you are responding to without including the salient part of his note but if it was Bruce, he is entirely correct IF you have a kit that has not been assembled. I was assuming that you had an assembled kit since you were concerned about what the screws mated with inside the KX3. I wrote the KX3 kit assembly manual and there may be some shortcuts one can take. I was trying to be complete for those who might have a factory=assembled unit. 73 Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Arno Dienhart Sent: Monday, August 12, 2013 3:11 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Cc: w2b...@aol.com Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Simplest ever mod for K2 will also work on KX3 Yours sounds a lot easier than what Ron advises. How did you do yours? --- Just did my KX3.
