Re: [Elecraft] K2 INFO 232

2018-04-19 Thread Don Wilhelm

Erik,

Your K2 has the A to B updates, do NOT put X2 in!
For Firmware level 2.01 and above, CAL PLL is done only on 40 meters
(for all bands). If attempted on other bands, you will get an INFO 232
error.

Use the information in the newer manual - the older manual has
information *only* applicable to K2s that have not been upgraded.

alignment, and freshen it up a bit.

When I did the "PLL Ref Osc Range Test" in Alignment Part II, the range
was slightly less than 6 kHz. When I got to "VFO Linearization", 40
meters was fine without any INFO messages.

I was using the original Rev B manual (not related to RevB board) that
came with it. Under Part III, Alignment and Test there is another "VFO
Linearization (All Bands)". I did that and every band failed (INFO 232)
except 40 meters. And of course, in the Rev B manual, there is no INFO
232 only 235. Anyway, I checked around Q19 as the Troubleshooting
suggested and found X1, but no X2. After reading the circuit operation,
I was convinced somehow X2 got left out. Since it was supposed to be
there to prevent the very short range problem I thought I was
experiencing, I thought I had found the problem.

I emailed Elecraft to order X2, and got a nice note from Mike saying
they would send one out no charge. That kind of service still amazes me.
But I told him to hold off until I can hear from this group.

I checked my other K2 manual (I also have SN 6911), and, first, it does
not have a procedure for VFO linearization on anything but 40 meters. In
fact, it says INFO 232 probably occurred because I wasn't on 40m. And
the parts lists says X2 is not used!

I went into this without having any actual problem or complaint. The old
manual convinced me I did. The later Rev I manual says I might, but
didn't know it. I'm supposed to have a PLL range of 9.8 to 15 kHz. I
have 5.97 kHz.

So if that is a problem, the problem is associated with Q19 which is a
very simple stage. X1 is probably the most likely cause. Any ideas?

Also, since two crystals were originally used to "de-Q one another to
increase the tuning range", what was done to make two crystals unnecessary?

Thanks for any help,

Re: [Elecraft] UPS Practice? was:Re: KPA1500 Caution

2018-04-19 Thread Dick Green WC1M
USPS has a similar free service, called Informed Delivery. It also lets you see
photos of mail pieces (non-packages) heading your way. Fedex has something
similar as well. One thing that's great about these services is they tell you
what's coming to your address even if you don't have a tracking number. It's
definitely worth signing up for these free accounts. You also get the ability
to prepay for shipping and print labels. That saves time at the P.O. and
sometimes I can get UPS or Fedex to pick up the package for fee when they're
delivering one.

I agree that any one of these services can and will damage goods that are not
packed well. That's on the shipper. Most of the horror stories I've heard were
due to the shipper not packing the goods adequately (though sometimes that can
be undone on an international shipment by customs inspectors.) That said, I've
seen some instances where the box itself was penetrated or crushed, which is on
the carrier.

I believe custom foam inserts and double-boxing are the best way to protect
electronic equipment, though double boxing almost always involves the dreaded
peanuts.

I live at the end of an 1100' gravel driveway, so the carriers can leave
packages on the front porch with little or no danger that they'll be stolen.
Even so, for something as expensive as a KPA1500 I would opt for a signature
being required. I suspect that if you don't do that you could have trouble
collecting the full insurance. Also, several times UPS has delivered our
packages to the wrong address. We were able to get them back, but that might
not be the case with something really expensive.

Sometimes a substitute driver will refuse to venture down our driveway for fear
of not being able to turn around (the turn-around isn't visible from the road)
or fear of getting stuck in snow, ice or mud. So they leave the package in the
mailbox (which I believe is illegal) or they put it in a plastic bag tied to
the mailbox post. The mailbox is right on the highway in front of our driveway,
so the package could be stolen easily. A couple of times they just dumped the
box in the snow at head of the driveway. I usually call to let UPS know so they
can tell the drivers not to do that. Again, requiring a signature gets around
that problem but also requires that we hang around all day. I recently had a
signature-required shipment where the estimated delivery times were off by many
hours so I missed it twice and had to pick it up at the UPS depot 20 minutes
away.

My least favorite delivery method is SurePost. UPS picks up the package, sends
it to your region, then hands it off to USPS for the last part of the trip.
That always adds at least one day, if not several days.

All this said, it amazes me how much stuff we're buying online these days and
how cheap the shipping has become.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: shipper from H

2018-04-19 Thread Fred Jensen
Well ... not always.  Moved from Auburn CA to Sparks NV in summer of
2015.  Filed the forwarding notice with Auburn PO and all worked well
... except Verizon.  Didn't get bills, they finally sent me a text, CS
agent tells me our address -- and it is wrong, maybe 2 miles from our
real address.  CS agent corrects it, still no bills.  Next month, CS
agent says our address is again that wrong one and corrects it.
Continue this pattern for about 6 months.  After quite a bit of
sleuthing on my part and letters to Verizon [including CEO [:-) ], trips
to PO, it appears:

Pitney-Bowes, of postage meter fame, has a service [I forget name,
Veri?] that will connect with your company database, reach
in, and "correct" addresses therein.  Verizon is a subscriber to this
service, and once a month, this happens.  P-B says they get their
address information from the USPS.  Local postmaster knows nothing.
Actually, no one at USPS anywhere knows about such a database, and no
one is interested in asking P-B who they're downloading addresses from.
P-B does not disclose such data to individuals, apparently even if said
individual is the one whose address they're screwing up.  Have never
gotten mail from Verizon, I pay the bill on-line now.

There's the core of a really great dystopian novel in this somewhere. [:-)

Even when you move and give all the needed documentation for forwarding
the USPS screws up. I've had three items returned as undeliverable and
yesterday
was notified by Amazon that my item was delivered and held by the post
office for
7 days and to arrange for pickup.
Upon contacting the PO by phone They checked the tracking number and
informed
me they delivered it to the former address the previous day. My wife
checked our
mail box and, guess?, YUP it was in our PO box not the former address.
And the PO wants a price increase for their Obvious(?) great service.

[Elecraft] OT: shipper from H

2018-04-19 Thread Edward R Cole

hopefully topic will pass political correction police.

Recent order of a Yamaha CM500 from Amazon.com got "Lost in space".

Well actually their compooter substituted another city for mine and
sent it there, where all tracking failed. Fortunately I noticed it
was "delivery attempted" after a week of waiting delivery and I
complained to Amazon who refunded my purchase of $58.33. I checked
the order at amazon on-line and it properly listed Nikiski. But the
package was addressed to Kenai with the Nikiski zip code. This is
not the first time amazon screwed up.

I ordered again listing this time the physical address of my PO
(which I have permission to do). Not only USPS but UPS and FedEx
shipments can accepted (for me) by my local PO. This a nice cure for
"drop n scoot" delivery by later two shippers.

Even when I use "click-n-ship" for prepaid packages mailed thru the
USPS, the USPS Internet site changes my address town and zipcode to
Kenai 99611-5074 (???). Fortunately this is only the return
address. I can try to correct the address before printing my labels
but the USPS compooter just changes it back. So no win. Hopefully,
none of my shipments are returned (to the wrong city and zipcode).

Of course it knows more than the hooman that wrote it. I guess
another evil like "auto-fill" and "auto-correct"?

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] New Product: SPX3 External Speaker

2018-04-19 Thread Robert Morris
Here is my reply to another response which didn't make it to my Inbox. I
try to keep up with everyone's inquiries. The original response is at
the bottom:

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your feedback. I've been wondering the same thing about the
grille. A square or rectangular grille would mimic the look of the
Elecraft SP3, which is a plus. On the other hand, in order to have a
volume knob on the face, a square or rectangular grille would likely
force the enclosure to be wider to accommodate both the grille and knob.
The round grille allows a knob to be placed in the corner with ease.
Also, a round grille weighs less.

I used a round grille for the first prototype because I was able to
source one that fit the speaker driver I'm using. So, I could at least
have a complete speaker. Fortunately, it looks better than I had
anticipated. Of course, your question is, which would look better? For
many, it comes down to personal preference. I'm open to what you and
others prefer.

Thanks and 73,
Robert (AG6ZZ)

-

Robert,

I love the idea, I'm wondering about whether a square or rectangular
speaker grill would look better. 73,

Mark

Re: [Elecraft] Longer K-Pod cable?

Bob:

I made one to allow it to reach around the back of the desk and then
underneath to the keyboard tray, so the K-Pod is right next to my computer
mouse--very handy.

Make sure you get the wiring correct, as W3PFR points out, pin 1 must not
be connected, else you may get some "interesting" results.

I ordered a 6P6C cable, cut off one end, then crimped on my own connector
with the pin 1 wire cut back and therefore disconnected.

If you do this, be sure to mark the cable ends, as noted in the K-Pod
manual:

*"If you disconnect the wire at only one end, be sure that end is plugged
into your K3S or K3."* (p. 19)

I have made a slightly longer cable, mine iw 4 or 5 feet long.
Elecraft warns that these cables aren't good for long distances,
so builder beware. My cable seems to work reliably.

Do follow Don't warning and don't connect pin 1. The K3(S) end
is also used for factory setup of the radio, and you don't want
to go there yourself.

There is an APP that allows you to specify when you want your package delivered
by UPS. Also, you might have been able to go to the UPS distribution point in
your area and pick it up, depending on what time of day you got home, etc... I
have done this several times.

I know it is disappointing to miss a delivery, but the other fellow is right.
I wouldn't want that beautiful amp to sit on my door step for anyone to pick up
when I'm not home.

Yes, I know. The problem is that they did not warn me when tracking the
package that I would have to be there, and despite claiming they would
do so, their web site also gave me no inkling of when during the day I
could expect delivery. For a company that designs its deliveryroutes to
minimize left turns, you'd think this would be child's play.

I guess I am fortunate, I have a 1/4 mile unpaved driveway - at the end
of a 3/4 mile unpaved private road in our large lot subdivision (8+
acres for each lot.

The house cannot be seen until you get halfway up the driveway.
UPS delivers to my front door and USPS does the same for packages that
will not fit in the mailbox.

I am signed up for UPS My Choice, so I am notified when a package will
arrive. I also signed the Driver Release so the driver can leave a
package even though it is insured and I am temporarily away.
I am very careful to set a "vacation stop" for both UPS and USPS when I
will be away for an extended period of time. That guarantees that the
driver will not leave a package when I am away from home for an extended
period.

Delivery service from both carriers is excellent here, but as has been
said, much depends on the local delivery person. I reward mine with a
gift during the holiday season, and it pays benefits.

USPS and UPS both work well for me. I do not have the same flexibilty
with FedEx, but that is not to say they are not a good carrier.

Consider yourself lucky if UPS *did not* drop the package on the porch
and run.  I have a 200 foot long driveway, the end of which is out of
sight of my front door.  UPS often dumps packages at the end of the
drive, in full view of the road, and out of sight of the house even if
I'm home!  The drivers simply don't want to pull into the narrow drive
(and back out) and they're too lazy to carry the package to the door
(or put it on a dolly if it's more than 25#) and wheel it up the
(concrete) drive.

I signed up for UPS My Choice, which is free. I receive emails informing me of
any packages scheduled for delivery at my address whether they're addressed to

UPS location.

Check it out at

For UPS, Insurance of $1000 or more or a request for a direct signature
will require that someone at your home sign for the delivery.

With USPS, that signature threshold is $500.

Normally, they will attempt to re-deliver the next business day.

That's odd. I got my shipping notice Friday (ordered first day 2.5
hours after email)
and also a UPS   tracking number which I have been using to track the
amps progress.

I’m a day-2 KPA1500 patient waiter.  I got the email 2 days ago and
today it shipped. There’s one potential problem.  It must have been
mentioned on this reflector and I missed it.  Elecraft used U.S.
Postal Service (USPS) to send the amp cross-country.  I have never
had a good experience with USPS’ handling of package deliveries,
particularly heavy (expensive) ones.  If you care about the shipper,
have the discussion with Elecraft up front.  I should have.  Good
luck all. Gary W2CS

Re: [Elecraft] Packing Peanuts Are Of the Devil!

2018-04-19 Thread Bill
The best packed radio I ever received was from TenTec. The radio was
bagged and was placed on the middle of a bed of cured spray foam. Then
the remainder of the box was filled with the same expanding spray foam.
Totally secure - nothing could move in any direction. I do not know if
this was their standard packing - I only purchased once from them.
