Re: [Elecraft] KX3 CW Audio Stereo (Issue)

2019-01-11 Thread Kevin F.
I found the issue, I had dual RX enabled and when you cross the band for the
2nd VFO it goes into stereo one receive in each ear. I've turned that off
and have full stereo in my earphones again with CW.

I will report back after trying some of the I/Q based softwares out there,
however I did try iSDR which is supposed to work with USB sound card, it
didn't work. I'll try the windows based program tomorrow and report back.

[Elecraft] KX3 CW Audio Stereo (Issue)

2019-01-11 Thread Kevin F.
Last night while operating CWT I ran across a part of the band that changed
the "Phones" audio, has anyone else ran across this issue happening at or
near 7.035323 to 7.035324 is the frequency that does it for me, all of a
sudden I have CW in just one ear instead of two.

Thanks for any help that you can provide.

Thanks,

Kevin F.

And yet, I have no idea which Elecraft rig you are referring to here.
Drives us K1, K2, KX3 owners crazy.

Re: [Elecraft] whats a updated K3 called?

2019-01-11 Thread K8TE
Don,

While perhaps "obvious," the models you describe are not updates of previous
versions in the order as W3FPR pointed out in a subsequent message. Those
radios are very different from each other in many aspects, especially
performance. Although, each is considered by most to be a top performer in
its class.

I am amused by many who add one or more of the new K3S modules to their K3
and then call their radio a K3S. They are not and never will be. An
upgraded K3 can approach a K3S, but not quite get there.

I hate to start another K4 e-mail chain. It may be too late now. If I were
to bet, I would bet the next Elecraft top-of-the-line K? will likely use a
newer topology than the K3. However, the K3S is number three on Rob
Sherwood's receiver performance list.

As Rob has pointed out the last several years, transmitter performance
(cleanliness) is where most radios need improvement today. Regardless, when
operating Field Day or any multi-multi event, my K3 with
updated (correct term in this case) synthesizers is my radio of choice. I
have seen how many new radios "collapse" under the strain of other nearby
transmitters.

At the same time, there are other radios with comparable performance in
similar situations. I am anxiously waiting for the Elecraft next iteration,
whether or not it's designated K4, to take the lead.

73, Bill, K8TE

Hi all,

It’s very obvious to me. Elecraft began with a K1, then “updated” to a K2
(which I am building). Then they “updated” to a K3, and all the new mods
that go on it. So, it’s very obvious to me, that the new “updated” radio
should be called (ready for this?), THE K4 !

It naturally follows with their earlier naming scheme.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 RX I/Q testing

2019-01-11 Thread Don Wilhelm

Kevin,

You are unlikely to hear anything from the headphones from that jack.
Feed it into a soundcard and you should see something using a panadapter
application like HDSDR or NaP3.

The RX I/Q output is low level and broadband. It is not suitable for
digital mode software like FlDigi. For that software, use the Phones jack.

I still wonder if I should hear anything with the RX I/Q enabled or not, it

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 RX I/Q testing

The jack is 3/32 inch or 2.5 mm.

Have you tried connecting the I/Q output to a computer and some SDR software
that actually uses I/Q input?

I don’t think you’ll hear much using phones. Scope should show the signal I
would think.

Be sure to push plug all the way into the hack. It is very stiff for the first
several times.

I see TX power overshoot when there is too much audio drive. The 5th bar
should be flashing not solid on the ALC meter. Also, do a TX GAIN
calibration procedure from the K3 Utility.

My KPA500 has endured some massive peak power overshoots without
destruction (1200w) before I readjusted things. I also use an LP-100, and
it seems to have an extremely sensitive peak mode.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 TX power overshoot

2019-01-11 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX
I occasionally see a wee bit of overshoot as seen on my KPA500. I'm
driving it from my K3S at about 20 watts for about 400 watts out on
SSB.  Occasionally I'll see a 450 or 500 watt indication on the LED
bargraph.  The KPA500 doesn't seem to mind.

If I set the drive power to 20 watts CW mode, I never see any overshoot.

There is a TXG VCE menu item in the CONFIG menu.   Check the value of
this.  It balances voice transmit peak power in relation to CW peak
power.  See page 67 of the manual.

Re: [Elecraft] Yama CM-500 Replacement

Well, after using those Koss SB45 cans for fifteen minutes - back they go to
Amazon and a brand new pair of Yamaha CM500’s is on it’s way to me. My initial
feeling was that the Koss was a tad tighter, but the more I wore them, the less
comfortable I was with ‘em. I guess that’s the difference between a $25 pair
and a $56 pair. I hope the ear pads on this set last longer than the seven
years I got out of the original. But, all things being equal, I suppose $8 per
year isn’t bad…

Re: [Elecraft] Yama CM-500 Replacement

2019-01-11 Thread AB2E Darrell
Hi all,
I still have a CM-500 sitting here but rarely use it now.
Just before CQWW CW in Nov I purchased an Inrad W1 headset. Outstanding
performance, and 0 fatigue on your ears. While it doesn't claim to be a noise
cancelling headset, with the high kerosene heater noise in my unheated garage
shack, it did seem to lower the noise considerably.
For those in noisy environments, I recommend the Bose QC35 or QC25. These are
true noise cancelling headphones and are pricy (I was fortunate to get mine
free with United Airlines mileage that was expiring). I also have a Heil Proset
which I like, but ears are sore after a 48hr contest.

I've used all of these on the K3 and/or Icom 7700,7800, and 756 Pro III.

I'm looking at the hard step next, I haven't recently taken a backup of my
radio, a full reset of the entire radio and re-alignment. I'm going to read
about the steps before I commit to this however I'm not hearing the RX I/Q
and there seems to be something strange happening with the CW RX audio in
the 40 meter band that I'm also wondering if a re-alignment would clear up.

Re: [Elecraft] Yama CM-500 Replacement

2019-01-11 Thread Charlie T
If you can find ones that fit, I highly recommend a "Velour" version rather
than the same old thin plastic that will eventually also flake off.

I have three Sony MDR-7506s' and all have Velour pads.
Once you try a set, you'll never want to go back to OEM pads.

Re: [Elecraft] whats a updated K3 called?

2019-01-11 Thread Charlie T
Yep, it almost as confusing as the progression of the Collins S-Line
receivers, from the 75S-1, 75S-2, 75S-3, 75S-3A, 75S-3B, and finally, the
75S-3C.

Personally, I feel the reason the K3s was not introduced as the K4, is that
they didn't want to make all the K3 owners feel like Icom buyers.
(Example: IC-756, IC-756PRO, IC-756PRO II, IC-756 PRO III, IC-7600 and now
the IC-7610.)
Not knocking Icom since I have owned each of them and understand their
product development & marketing strategy.
I currently have the IC-7610 as well as a K3s/P3/VGA and I like them both.

Hi all,

It's very obvious to me. Elecraft began with a K1, then "updated" to a K2
(which I am building). Then they "updated" to a K3, and all the new mods
that go on it. So, it's very obvious to me, that the new "updated" radio
should be called (ready for this?), THE K4 !

It naturally follows with their earlier naming scheme.

OK I thought this was just a fun thing, I did not know it was actually a
serious thing.

Frankly a K3 is a K3 and a K3S is a K3S. The difference in each radio
can vary wildly based on what the owner has installed in the radio as
far as options go. That is the bottom line. To me the K3S options
that are available for the K3 are nothing more than additional options.

As for making a used purchase, the SN is critical.

Re: [Elecraft] Sorta OT - assistive technology assistance

2019-01-11 Thread Al Lorona
JR - I have a folder of dozens of replies to Elecraft posts that I've never
sent. (I try to exercise discipline so that the moderator doesn't have to slap
me on the hand.) But your reply said *exactly* what a draft that I had written
said. I'm very happy that you expressed the same idea.

Building vs. buying, especially when buying is cheaper, is the homebrewer's
dilemma. You now have to really want to learn something to build something
yourself, and not merely save money.  More and more, homebrewing is in effect
paying "tuition" to learn by doing.

I built a QRP transceiver totally from scratch last year, and virtually
everybody I told asked me, "Why?" It took me weeks and weeks and, had I not
been blessed with a really good junk box, would have cost me more than a KX2.
But... I got to work with some really cool ultra low noise op amps and figured
out how to get a half-watt out of a 2N, so putting this particular rig on
the air for the first time was my "diploma".

I hope your construction project goes well. Please let us know when you get it
working.

Re: [Elecraft] whats a updated K3 called?

2019-01-11 Thread Edward R Cole

Bernie, AF9US beat me to it. I thought K3U for updated or K3+.

It would only designate it has hdwr updates but not which ones
specifically. If selling, those should be listed by the seller and
clarified whether self-installed or Elecraft-installed, which might
matter to some buyers.

My K3 SN-4340 bought in 2010 is upgraded with two new synth and
modified gen coverage bw filter for operation on 630m. It has many
options which I installed as a "kit". Firmware is not updated to
latest vers (yet).

So each radio is "customized" by the owner so a simple upgrade
designation is kind of incomplete.

I call my KX3 the KX3-2M to specify it has the 2m transverter mod
(which I installed as a kit). But it has other options installed.

But K3U is simple and, if adopted by this group, probably will "stick"!

JR,

Another approach to help your friend is to buy and install an inexpensive,
simple mixer as he can clearly make use of it now. You can still build a
mixer for the experience. After taking whatever time is necessary for
designing, building, and debugging in your shop you can try it out at your
friend’s location for a “real world” evaluation by a real “end user”. His
feedback may give you an opportunity to provide improvements to your design
or tailor it to his specific needs/desires.

Re: [Elecraft] whats a updated K3 called?

2019-01-11 Thread Don Wilhelm

Not quite right. The K2 was first - named after the mountain.
The K1 came later, followed by the KX1.
Then came the K3. The KX3 came after that - then the K3S, and finally,
the KX2.

Since you are dead set on building one from scratch, start here.

https://www.google.com/search?q=audio+mixer+circuit

You'll see a lot of four-channel mixers because quad op-amps are cheap, under
$1.

This one has the pots before the op amps.

https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/projects/build-an-audio-mixer/

This one has the pots after the op amps.

http://www.theorycircuit.com/audio-mixer-circuit/

I’d be interested in the parts cost after you have chosen a design.

All this is fun and good, but if you are selling it, it needs to be
listed as a K3 SN with the specific upgrades enumerated - so the
buyer knows what he is buying.

I have run into this problem many, many times with the early K2s - they
are listed as being upgraded, only to find out (for instance) that only
the firmware has been changed while the A to B upgrades have not been
installed.
What upgraded means to one person does not equal the perception of
another person.

Re: [Elecraft] whats a updated K3 called?

2019-01-11 Thread John K9UWA
One would think that K3s represents multiple K3 radios. As in Plural of K3.

I am sure that it causes some confusion to many who read the Elecraft reflector
or
other places where the radios are discussed.

I do thank Wayne and Eric for a list that says. The new radio has the following
differences to the K3 radio. As well as the portions of the K3 that can not be
upgraded to equal the new K3S radio.

If you think this is a tad absurd, you're absolutely correct.just as

So. let's call it a K3U... (U for upgrade)... so as to distinguish it
from a K3S.

Re: [Elecraft] whats a updated K3 called?

2019-01-11 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX

Clarification:

The Tentec Omni VI Plus is not the same as the Tentec Omni VI, opt 3.
There is a difference, in model number and performance and features.
Thus from my take, a K3 upgrade is just that, a K3 that has the
recommended factory upgrades installed.    And a K3S is a K3S that can
only come from the factory.    And in both cases, presumably a
difference in value for resale purposes.

2019-01-11 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX
I'd say it is called and "updated K3".   The K3S is different and my
understanding is that a K3 can not be updated to be a K3S. All abet
similar, in the end, they are different radios.    For that fact alone,
the reason I purchased a K3S and not a K3

[Elecraft] whats a updated K3 called?

2019-01-11 Thread Bernie Lavezza via Elecraft
What’s an updated K3 to be called?

This is a no-brainer!

You guys love to analyze — even to the point of OT! Analyze this! (Love the
movie!):

My suggestion is: K3U. It is simple, bears nice resemblance to the
manufacturer’s existing model naming scheme.

As an interested but non-owner of Elecraft radios, any moniker that bears too
close of a resemblance to the manufacturer’s conventions (K3s, for example) can
be too easily confused as a typo mistake, leaving a potential buyer thinking
K3S; and, also requiring a buyer to know the differences between the updated K3
and the K3S.

I definitely appreciate all the differences itemized in this email thread, a
“compiled and authorized list” will go a long way in helping prospective buyers
have the information needed at the time he or she is ready to purchase an
updated K3.

My suggestion-recommendation-vote is for K3U.

Enjoying the Elecraft email group,
Bernie, AF9US
