Re: [Elecraft] 25 amp fuse for KXPA100 power cable fast acting type OK ?

2019-03-29 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX
Be sure to replace the fuse with the same type.  Type as in Current
rating and Time Current Characteristics.    In other words, all 25 amp
fuses are not the same.

If you want to understand more about types and what they do and how they
work, see this link:

The manual does not differentiate fuse acting type... if indeed there

Spurs can emanate from devices picking up high power signals and rectifying to
create harmonics. I am not an expert but suggest either a review of handbook
topics, or perhaps someone will help you troubleshoot from this list. You
might also do a search on line for topics. Personally , I have had a KPA500
and 1500 and don't have the issue. However, each of us has a different setup.
I don't think you have to have thick skin or think you aren't in a club here.
There are a few who hover over us. Be patient and get the info you need to fix
the issue.

Step one, do you have a dummy load? Even if it is only 100 Watt unit, reduce
power from KPA500 and remove all connections except those that are needed to
operate. On whatever piece of equipment you are using to detect the spurs, do
you still see them? Someone will get back to you.

Re: [Elecraft] Macintosh version of Elecraft KX3 Utility

2019-03-29 Thread Andy McMullin via Elecraft
I’m sorry Keith but is there any evidence to support that assertion. That a 64
bit version will be available before the next MacOS revision is released?

I know it’s a nice thing to think. But have the developers said that’s what’s
happening? They seem to be completely missing from this thread.

I’m sure there’s something in the works but I see nothing from the developers
themselves to say so and the next version of MacOS seems to be only weeks away.

Re: [Elecraft] Nasty spurs on RX with new KPA500

2019-03-29 Thread Gary NC3Z
Just a follow up to what Elecraft found on my new KPA500 that had spurs
on RX, which I sent back to them since the replacement front panel did
not fix the issue. Elecraft did indeed see the problem and said it was
pretty bad. They replaced the filter cap in the +5V supply that went to
the LPF, and added additional filter caps to the front panel. Any
remaining spurs are now below spec.

I was at least happy Elecraft saw the issue, as I had several responses
(direct) to my initial report on the reflector here that I did not know
what I was talking about and what I described could not happen.

It is important to note that the ACOM will not follow the K3 unless the K3

[Elecraft] Tinnitus and the K3 RX EQ and Related Variables

2019-03-29 Thread Doug Renwick
I have just ordered a pair of Kirkland hearing aids from Costco and I have
two questions:
1. Are these behind the ear aids susceptible to high levels of RFI?
2. Kirkland/Costco offer two different sizes of behind the ear, a smaller
one using type 312 batteries with a life of 4-5 days or a slightly larger
one using a type13 battery with a life around 10 days.
Both batteries are really cheap at $11.99 for 48.
What has been people's experience?

trade-offs (size, weight, efficiency, bandwidth, ease of tuning, etc.). Once we
have something we know will satisfy our requirements, you'll hear about it here
first. Meanwhile, I recommend a wire tossed in a tree, preferably one that
follows you around as you hike :)

Thanks for your ongoing interest in our antenna products, and keep those ideas
coming.

Re: [Elecraft] Tinnitus and the K3 RX EQ and Related Variables

2019-03-29 Thread Ignacy
I used to have a dual channel 15-band equalizer. It could quickly compensate
for deficiencies in my ear and signals. Compared to software equalizers,
you can manipulate them rapidly for max readability. Many times a difficult
copy became an easy copy.

However, the equalizer was susceptible to RFI, had some background noise and
it took lots of space. Now I use RX EQ in K3. Good but not as good as the
manual equalizer.

[Elecraft] This Sunday's SSB Net 3-31-2019

2019-03-29 Thread Eric Lanzl
Hello SSB net participants,
I have made the decision that due to the CQ WPX phone contest that it will be
very difficult to conduct the net with the contest going on. Ww will meet at
18Z on 14.303.5 on Sunday, April 7th. Everyone is welcome to join the net. We
ask for your call sign, name,  location, the rig you are using,  and if it is
an Elecraft radio the serial number. Best wishes for a good week and if you are
in the contest good luck.

Re: [Elecraft] Tinnitus and the K3 RX EQ and Related Variables

2019-03-29 Thread Charlie T
I'll second the Costco recommendation.

That said, their resident audiologist told me flat out, even the best will
not make your ears suddenly 16 years old again.
They can do wonders, but don't expect them to be perfect.

He has tweaked mine a couple times over the years for minor improvements and
I have to choose their program (blue-tooth link to phone) depending on my
environment, home, in a crowd, listening to music, etc.

I will say that they make a yuge difference and offer some advice to you
"younger" guystake care of your ears.
If you're running a chain saw or a lawn mower (or playing lead guitar in a
metal band), WEAR EAR PROTECTION.

For years, I didn't and I am now paying the price.
(Well, maybe not the metal band part...but as they used to say, "If the
music's too loud, you're too old", which is NOT the best advice for your
ears.)

Re: [Elecraft] new KPA1500 Manual

2019-03-29 Thread Don Wilhelm
The errata pages are also essential. The manuals are not updated with
every change.

More applicable to the radios than to amplifiers is the Firmware Release
Notes which can be considered as additional information about the
operation of the radio.

Re: [Elecraft] Question

2019-03-29 Thread kd4iz
Eric,

If you see some momentum for this, don't exclude the "other modes"... The rate
of growth in DMR has been matched by the new activity on the other DV modes, so
it might be better to go for an open solution.

My suggestion is that you reach out to Jeff VE6DV and the folks at
https://www.openquad.net/ who are very welcoming, and net friendly. They can
provide you with a net time slot that is "multi-mode", ie. reflector, room, and
TG, supporting the 3 major DV modes plus EchoLink, etc.

Investigate at D-Star XRF757A, DMR BM TG 31012, and YSF US QuadNet Array,
number 37099, Echolink WWARG Conference.

Best and good luck.

Subject: [Elecraft] Question

Hello members of the Elecraft forum.
I was wondering if there might be an interest in requesting a DMR (digital
mobile radio) talk group for Elecraft users. It might be nice to have a place
to mee in a digital room. One can request a tg on the relatively new TGIF
system. Anyway let me know what people think? If there is interest I will make
a request for the tg.Maybe comments can be made here on the forum about the
talk group. .

Thanks,
Eric WB(JNZ (also net control for the Elecraft sideband net)

Re: [Elecraft] Will there be a K4

2019-03-29 Thread Bill
Bingo!!!  I used a Genovation for K3 control (placing the keypad beside
me at the edge of my desk). Worked great - until the keypad quit. I
reverted back to using HRD.

Then I got an IC-7300 with the touch screen and a stylus.  Moved the
radio out on the desk so I can reach it easily (and lost desktop space).
Good radio with lots of modern features and personalization choices.
Then I reverted back using HRD (remember the lost desktop space?).

HRD can be somewhat customized as to what controls are on screen, but it
is a one size fits all system. Hence, with the limited rig related
customization it offers, it is not the end all rig control system - too
much attention has been paid to digital, rotors, DXing, logging, etc.
Not enough time spent on rig control.

Maybe I am the only person in the world solely interested in rig control
software?

All that said, the idea of a full featured tablet-like remote control I
can hold in my lap would just be GREAT!!! I just have to live long
enough to see this happen.

Life is good at my shack - the snow is going away!

I recently bought a K1 with a 40/15 filter board and want to
change it to 40/20. Is there a kit available and if so what's
the cost?

Thanks!
