[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2024-07-07 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

Conditions were poor on both bands.  Higher QSB on twenty meters
with more noise on forty.  I tried different radios and other antennas.
However, after the forty meter net I found twenty meters quite active.
Then there are now holes in the ionosphere from all the commercial
rockets being launched.

  On 14050.5 kHz at 2200z:

W0CZ - Ken - ND

K6XK - Roy - IA

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

  On 7047.5 kHz at z:

WM5F - Dwight - ID

Until next week 73,

(Entries with (c/o) indicate a 'one and done' station that checked out
during the 1st round. (n/h) failed to respond during subsequent rounds.)

We had a total of 14 check ins this week (including the NCS). I'd like
to thank the relay stations for assisting net control, and in
particular, Eric, WB9JNZ who took Net Control this evening, since I was
running low power (100W) on a K2 operating portable from my RV. I hope
to see all of you again. The net concluded at 09:51 PM ET.

We have a really great group of folks checking in, and I encourage
everyone in the Midwest and adjoining areas to check in next week.

As a reminder, if you go to https://netlogger.org at the net starting
time and look for the 80M Elecraft SSB Net, you should see the frequency
we are using that evening, if we must QSY again due to busy frequencies.

[Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Announcement

2024-07-07 Thread Dave New, N8SBE
Please join us on 3803kHz plus (not minus) QRM (see the Netlogger
discussion, below), 9PM ET Sunday (0100Z Monday). Note that the net
stays on the same local time, when we switch back and forth to/from
Daylight time, so the UTC time changes, but not the local time.

As daylight persists more into the evening, we may find it more
difficult to conduct the net at its regular time. For the time being,
let's keep it at 9PM ET, as that is getting late on a 'school night' for
a lot of folks, as it is.

Your net control this week will be Dave, N8SBE. I will be operating
portable from my RV, using a K2/100 SN#895, so relay help will be
greatly appreciated. Check the AIM window on Netlogger for any messages
I may post there, looking for relay or NCS help.

The group that meets on 3803 kHz before us has been wrapping up
operations promptly at or before 9PM ET. There is also another group
that normally comes on at 10PM ET, so we need to make sure to wrap up
operations by 10PM ET. If any stations wish to continue past that time,
please QSY to a clear frequency.

If you are a US General class licensee, please ensure that your dial is
accurately calibrated and that your transmitter/amplifier combination is
clean and free of splatter, since we will be operating LSB within 3 kHz
of the lower band edge of the 80M US General class band.

I'm using Netlogger, so if you go to netlogger.org and look for the 80M
Elecraft SSB Net, you will be able to see the exact frequency we've
settled on for the evening. If we find 3803 kHz busy, we will move UP
the band a few kHz, so we can stay in the 80M US General class band.

Hope to see you this evening on the net.

73,

Have you looked at the elecraft-kx.groups.io list? There has been activity
there over the last two years. I have personally engaged in the discussion
of getting CESSB speech processing into the KX3.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2024-07-06 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

On Monday I noticed there were ripe salmon berries.  Gray jays tend
them closely but had missed a few days.  On Tuesday I saw, and heard, a
gray streak drop to the ground with a thump.  On Wednesday the thumping
continued on my roof.  Yesterday I saw an immature gray jay eating those
neglected salmon berries.  He was learning how to take off from a low,
inverted position.  He was successful about half of the time.

The sun is supposed to be quiet for a few days.  There are no CMEs
on the way.  And, the sunspot groups exposed to us are stable.  That
should allow the ionosphere to stabilize.  Lower QSB would be nice.
Stronger signals would be OK too.

Please join us on (or near):

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday)
7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday)

   73,
  Kevin. KD5ONS

2024-07-06 Thread Richard Hill
James, once upon a time...all Elecraft rigs were discussed here. As new
rigs became available, the latest rigs got more attention than the older
rigs and alternate groups formed. You may want to unsubscribe here and
subscribe to: [Elecraft-AX/KX/KH] on Groups.io.

The newest, cutting edge, radios (any brand) have bugs and many have
preferences that they want. Non-the-less, many appreciate the advances and
Elecraft's responsiveness to their customers.

Gud luck.

Re: [Elecraft] K2

2024-07-06 Thread W3FPR

Larry,

You will not be able to remove the Front Panel just by removing the 4
screws.

Ignore those You-Tube videos - they are both inadequate.
Take the top cover off and peer between the Front Panel and the Control
Board - you should see two standoffs (one near the left and the other
near the right - each about 1 1/2 inches from each end).

Remove the screws that hold the Control Board to those standoffs.
If you have the KDSP2 or KAF2 options installed, you must remove it -
there will be a standoff to hold that option board apart from the
Control Board.  If the KDSP2, you must remove the upper board to get to
the screw holding that option to its standoff (use good anti-static
measures when removing and storing the upper KDSP2 board).

Now remove the screw (or standoff) from the control board.
After that you may remove the 4 screws holding the Front Panel to the
rest of the K2 and pull the front panel assemble away from the K2.

It takes longer to write/read this than to do it - it is not difficult.
I used to do it in a minute or two.

Reverse the steps to put the front panel back on and secure it to the
Control Board the CB should not 'flop' inside the K2.
The serial number does not matter - for this procedure they are all the
same.

The mic configuration header plugging can be found in the KSB2 instructions.

I only use rig control when contesting or with WSJT-X. N1MM+ does rig
control for contesting, WSJT-X for those modes, both do it directly. I
don't run both at the same time (because the only digital contesting I
do is RTTY, and N1MM+ does that).

The only parts of DXLab that I use (and I've used it since getting back
on the air in 2003), are DXkeeper and Spot Collector. 99% of my
operation is contesting. I log in N1MM+, export logs to DXKeeper, use it
to interface with LOTW, eQSL, ClubLog. When DXpeditions were still using
RTTY, I used WinWarbler to work them. Now it's WSJT-X, and it logs to
DXKeeper through JTAlert. Random CW QSOs get logged to DXKeeper using
the Capture window.

DXKeeper does a great job of keeping track of awards, and is great for
assembling applications, especially DXCC.

Not to mention that the updates to all HRD modules, are four years
(PLUS!) behind the promised release date (now ONLY the logbook update is
mentioned; THEN other modules, like K4 control perhaps someday...).

I'm migrating to DXLabs, but (being polite) it's a 'process' (tedium
YOWCH!) but Win4K4 has the 'prettiest' rig control app, so far (while
waiting for VK4).  No one suite, is complete, pretty or effective so
it's still a hodge podge of display filling panels, more than the
display can show at one time (even on a 4K monitor).  There is so much
needing to be seen, I'm adding another monitor, hoping that helps.

If only the apps each spoke a common language, so mix and match wasn't
so complicated (or impossible); but the variables in each station is
complex.  (THEN add remote ops from a multiplatform system...)

It's no wonder I still prefer twisting knobs and mashing buttons, hi
hi.  Simple just ROCKS!

Re: [Elecraft] PTT-Key Settings won't save

2024-07-05 Thread Bob Wilson, N6TV
Once you learn how to fix this unwanted keying issue in Windows, there's
little reason to ever use the default UNSAFE option of *CONFIG:PTT-KEY*
(tap '1' to toggle between "USB SAFE" or "UNSAFE"). The K4 does not have
any equivalent option because it is simply not needed.

To prevent unwanted keying of your K3 or K4 about 6 or 7 times when using
DTR or RTS to key the rig, just disable two COM port settings (Serial
Enumeration and Modem Control at Startup) using Windows Device Manager.
Just follow the instructions and screenshots in this short document, linked
from my QRZ.COM page :

   - How to prevent unexpected transmissions when using FTDI USB-to-Serial
adapters (online Google Doc, from post

to
   Elecraft Reflector, August 12th, 2018)

This applies to the Elecraft K3S, or a K3 with the FTDI version of the
Elecraft KUSB, or the Elecraft K4, or the CW / FSK / PTT keying circuits in
my S-BOX-USB .

If using a legacy 9-pin serial port on a PC like COM1: for keying, a simple
registry edit is required. See pages 29 to 33 in this PowerPoint
Presentation for the details, or contact me OFF LINE for help via TeamViewer
QuickSupport if you
don't want to attempt this yourself:

   - Everything You Need to Know About USB and Serial Interfaces
, updated for 2021, presented to Spokane
   DX Association, Feb. 3rd, 2022
  - Watch YouTube recording of this presentation here
  .

Note that moving a rig's USB cable to a new USB hub (internal or external),
or using commercial "device driver updater" software (not recommended), or
a major Windows update like upgrading from Windows 10 to Window 11, will
usually reset these important driver options back to defaults, so if the
keying problem returns, simply perform this procedure again.

Then set CONFIG:PTT-KEY to UNSAFE and there will be no more hassles.

Frank,

Yes it should bring up RTS-DTR after the port is polled.
When running with Unsafe mode, pay attention to when the K3 is turned on
and when the computer is turned on.  At times, you may have to turn the
computer on after the K3, and an easy way to prevent the extraneous
keying is to either use TEST mode or simply turn VOX off during the
computer boot time.

[Elecraft] PTT-Key Settings won't saven I

2024-07-04 Thread Bob McGraw
I use FLDIGI and in doing so I configure the radio PTT and KEY in the
FLDIGI application.  When I load FLDIGI and go to CW mode, the radio
switches to CW mode and the PTT - KEY switches to RTS - DTR.   When I
close FLDIGI the radio switches back to OFF - OFF. I've checked another
couple of applications that I rarely use and they control the radio
correctly.  So I'd say the configuration is handled by and saved the
application and NOT the radio.

One MUST always shut the K3S down by the power switch on the front
panel, and never by the power supply.

Just clarify this strange behavior.
I use the Config Menu to set the PTT-Key to RTS-DTR. As long as I don't
turn off the rig, it works correctly. Once I turn off via the front panel
power switch, it loses this setting and goes back to OFF-OFF.
If while it is set to RTS-DTR I do a SAVE CONFIGURATION in the utility, I
can restore to the RTS-DTR values until I turn my power off.
Then it goes back to OFF-OFF.

Other config settings such a 1 or 2 speakers still can be changed and the
change is stored even after a power off/on.
Where are the settings stored in the K3? EPROM? Could one memory cell in
an EPROM go bad?
Is there a way to "factory reset" or something to clear this problem?

Thanks,
Frank

Re: [Elecraft] PTT-Key Settings won't save

2024-07-04 Thread W3FPR

Frank,

That is a "safety feature" because if the computer is turned on after
the K3 is powered up, it can key the K3 when the computer tests/sets its
ports.
Once things have settled down at the computer, PTT-KEY should resort to
whatever it was set before the power off.

You can find the full explaination in the full firmware  release notes.
It was some time ago,, so I suggest searching the release notes for
PTT-KEY to find it.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 ISSUE

2024-07-02 Thread Rick Bates, nk7i

G'morning,

That the amp does occasionally reach 500 out hints that it's not the
issue; but the rig driving the amp.

You didn't mention the rig, but watch what it is putting into the
KPA500.  It could be as simple as an output calibration.

I would DEFINITELY verify that the TX audio into the rig, is correct
(high enough for full output, but not high enough for ANY ALC).

On the K3, that is 4 bars with the 5th flickering, a little.  On the K4,
that is 8 bars (to the 5), again just flickering.  On another brand,
bring up the audio until the output power (any level) doesn't climb any
more, then back it down to where the output JUST starts to fall ('close
enough' but ask another station to watch your signal for purity).

Windows updates tend to muck with your settings, verify after each major
update that they're what you wanted.  Take notes.

Also check that your coax is valid (not failing) with connectors snug.

Rick nk7i

What I am seeing ( using FT8) is no output on 6M, on the HF bands the power

I'm thinking is it's microprocessor brain got scrambled with the RF.  I can't

Re: [Elecraft] K3s problem

2024-07-01 Thread Michael Carter via Elecraft
Hi Curt,

Do you have the internal ATU in your K3s?

If so, disable it by putting it in Bypass mode
and repeat your experiment.

Does the Forward power meter show any
output power, and can you confirm the
actual output power with an external power
meter?

If you still have a very high SWR into a dummy
load, substitute a different coax cable and
carefully tighten both coax connectors.

It is possible you have a failed rectifier diode
in the Forward path power sensing circuit or
a circuit interruption in that sensor path that
falsely indicates zero output power.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2024-06-30 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

Twenty meters had a little noise with deep QSB.  ESP to S6 for one
operator, S3 to S8 for another.  Low noise helped me dig deeper.  Forty
meters had a little less QSB but more noise. Signals were not as strong
as normal.  There were a few thunderstorms in the background.

Mike,

It will not make any difference as long as all the band components
(crystal, capacitors, and toroids) are correct for each band.
While it is nice to have the lower band as B1 and the upper band as B2,
it is not necessary, just set each band to agree with the low/upper band
frequency in the menu.

[Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Announcement

2024-06-30 Thread Dave New, N8SBE

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2024-06-29 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

The sun hit us with another CME yesterday.  Solar flux dropped a
little, it is around 180 after a few days over 200.  If it were less
cloudy I would take my telescope out for a look at the many sunspots.
Maybe next week.

The mostly cloudy week has kept temperatures down.  A few scattered
showers and a few foggy mornings make the forest wet. Many shades of
green, when the sun comes out it glows.  All manner of bees are working
the berry flowers popping out.  Salmon berries are ripening but they're
not around long.  The jays eat them. Huckleberries are just starting,
they are a staple into October.

Forty meters had more QSB and noise.  There was at least one

[Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Announcement

2024-06-23 Thread Dave New, N8SBE

73,

-- Dave, N8SBE

outs have been short lived this week.  The ionosphere is fully charged.
If the QSB is not too bad we may get a break.

Please join us on (or near):

7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday)

It's been a long time since I sold my K2s, but I have more recent
experience with K3s, and I had a problem with one of those mini-coax
jumpers. Elecraft can send some to you. And if it's a female connector
that solders to a board, they can send you that.

Re: [Elecraft] dead K2

2024-06-21 Thread W3FPR

Oscar,

First remove the KAT2 from the K2 entirely, including the cable to the
control board.

Then connect a dummy load to the BNC on the lower rear panel.
Try transmitting (do a TUNE) and see if there is any RF.  If there is,
you are fortunate, fix the coax ground to the KAT2 and put it back together.
If not, you have some troubleshooting to do.  Get an RF Probe (or an
oscilloscope) and follow the procedure for troubleshooting that is
printed near the back of the K2 manual (download if you do not have a
printed copy).

Until you find the failure point, that is all I can tell you.

A serial number will be helpful.

You might also contact Elecraft support, and Dave W8FGU can likely help
as well - he is the official contact for support on the legacy gear (K1,
K2, KX1).

[Elecraft] KX2 mobile operation in Iceland

2024-06-21 Thread John Harper
Thanks to those who called - the radio performed well, allowing me to work
3 continents from various parks in Iceland. The portability-to-features
ratio of the KX2 can't be beat.

Here is a video of it in action from the cramped quarters of a tiny rental
car with a roof-mounted vertical. All activity was on 15, 17 and 20 meter
CW.

Some drone video precedes the radio portion:

Re: [Elecraft] K2 receive problem

I would suspect a bad relay associated the 40m lowpass filter -- or a
bad solder connection to one of those relays.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K2

2024-06-20 Thread W3FPR
The K2 is not discontinued and will not be in the near future, but the
KPA100 and the KAT100 have been discontinued.

The KAT2 is still available if you want to operate at 10 to 15 watts output.
If you want 100 watts and the KAT100 tuner, you will have to ask if
anyone has one or the other for sale.

An alternative is the KX3 with the KAT3 tuner, but if you need 100
watts, you can easily add the KXPA100 and the KXAT3 tuner.  That will
work seamlessly with the KX3 at 0 to 100 watts.

The K2 is for those who want to "solder their own"  The KX3 (or the KX2
offer a non-build it yourself solution - although there is no soldering
for either one.

At 12 to 15 watts, the K2 plus the KAT2 does a great job - as does the
KX3 (or KX2 with the low power tuner.

As I said, if you need 100 watts, go for the KXPA100 with the KXPA100 ATU.

Hi Elecraft list,

It's fun to see where Elecraft gear is used.

The California QSO Party (CQP) just went live with 15 videos from CQP 2023.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Spur/Birdie on CW Receive

2024-06-19 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
OK - mystery solved! I had posted this on the Elecraft reflector and shortly
thereafter realized it should have gone on the KX groups.io
list. So, I put it there and THAT is where my answer came from. Now, why it
took almost a week to get into the Elecraft reflector is another question. But
anyway, my problem was fixed AND now I know why I’m seeing double! Sorry for
all the confusion, folks.

BTW - the “birdie” thingy was resolved by the Tech Mode entry RX ISO - turning
it ON got rid of the “birdie”. Thanks to JPE1HZG for clueing me in to that one.

Additional software syncs the KX3 with SDR++ and RumLogNG - a logging
program. Anyway, When I have the KX3 in CW mode, I see a birdie or spur
(not sure the actual name for it) about 500 Hz up from my zero-beat
frequency. As I turn the KX3 dial, the spur mores right along with me. It
is showing with a signal strength of about -79 db. Now I know that is a
really low signal, but it does show up on the display and is a tad
annoying. Actually, as I type this I’m on 10.116 and as I was testing, I
find that there was a low level signal there, under the birdie. The fact
it was being covered up bugs me a bit, too.

No matter what band I go to, my little “buddy” is there with me. If I
switch to USB or LSB, it is gone - it only shows up in CW. And if I do
CW-R, it switches to about 500 Hz below my frequency.

Anyone else have this? Is it something worth reporting to Elecraft, or is
 it a known “thing”.

Wow - this is strange! I posted this last week and got an answer fairly quickly
- it was a setting in the tech mode menu that resolved it. Thought it was all
done. Then this morning around 08:30 local time I got a couple messages that my
post had been accepted from the reflector, and it all started over again!

Anyway, the “problem” is resolved on my end and now it looks like something
funky is going on with the reflector.

[Elecraft] KX3 Spur/Birdie on CW Receive

2024-06-19 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Folks -

I’ve got my KX3 connected via an MFJ 178B-SDR switch to my computer running
SDR++. This gives me a nice BIG pan adapter display on my monitor. Additional
software syncs the KX3 with SDR++ and RumLogNG - a logging program. Anyway,
When I have the KX3 in CW mode, I see a birdie or spur (not sure the actual
name for it) about 500 Hz up from my zero-beat frequency. As I turn the KX3
dial, the spur mores right along with me. It is showing with a signal strength
of about -79 db. Now I know that is a really low signal, but it does show up on
the display and is a tad annoying. Actually, as I type this I’m on 10.116 and
as I was testing, I find that there was a low level signal there, under the
birdie. The fact it was being covered up bugs me a bit, too.

No matter what band I go to, my little “buddy” is there with me. If I switch to
USB or LSB, it is gone - it only shows up in CW. And if I do CW-R, it switches
to about 500 Hz below my frequency.

Anyone else have this? Is it something worth reporting to Elecraft, or is it a
known “thing”.

[Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Report

13 N9QDS ILK4D Keith (w)

(Entries with (c/o) indicate a 'one and done' station that checked out
during the 1st round. (n/h) failed to respond during subsequent rounds.)

We had a total of 13 check ins this week (including the NCS). I'd like
to thank the relay stations for assisting net control. I was having more
than the usual intermittent (audio?) issues, which finally calmed down
mid-net. Thanks for everyone's patience while I try to work out what
seems to be plaguing me especially on 80 meters. I hope to see all of
you again. The net concluded at 09:43 PM ET.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2024-06-16 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

Conditions were better on both bands than they have been in weeks.
I gave a few reports of NO QSB which has not been the case.  Noise was
low so I expect signals were low too, at least storm noise was in the
distance.  It was nice to hear folks better again.

  On 14050.5 kHz at 2200z:

W0CZ - Ken - ND

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

K4JPN - Steve - GA

K6XK - Roy - IA

  On 7047.5 kHz at z:

K7TXA - Jim - ID

WM5F - Dwight - ID

K6PJV - Dale - CA

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

  Until next week 73,

  Kevin.  KD5ONS

[Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Announcement

2024-06-16 Thread Dave New, N8SBE

73,

-- Dave, N8SBE

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2024-06-15 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

It was a cool, sunny week.  The ferns are over eight feet tall so
they're nearly done growing.  During the warmest sunny days I found them
a home to many ladybugs.  As soon as it cools, or the sun goes behind a
cloud they are gone.  Red bugs against green ferns are easy to spot,
they must not taste very good.

The sun keeps tossing protons and electrons at us.  There may be
some satellite problems because the storm of protons is energetic enough
to bypass their shielding.  Bit flipping can cause the systems to reset
or go into a failure mode requiring remote resets.

Please join us on (or near):

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday)
7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday)

   73,
  Kevin. KD5ONS

Re: [Elecraft] Other: Can you run coax inside metal conduit?

2024-06-12 Thread Michael Luberto
A number of years ago I had a vertical in the woods in my back yard. Between
the woods and the house was 30 feet of grass. I buried my coax for that stretch
in PVC under the grass and into the house. Once in the woods the coax was
exposed. The antenna system worked great until I then built a 60 foot tower.

Re: [Elecraft] Other: Can you run coax inside metal conduit?

2024-06-12 Thread Mark Johnsen
If possible run the coax perpendicular to the house wiring to keep any
coupling to a minimum. This was my configuration in the drop ceiling of my
former house. I ran legal-limit with no issue whatsoever. YMMV of course…
