[Elecraft] KUSB users, please help.

2012-09-24 Thread Barry Pfeil
If you are using the Elecraft KUSB USB-serial converter with Windows 7 and
recent N1MM (12.9.1), please let me know. Using my Keyspan USA-19HS
adapter (yes, latest drivers) I'm getting blue screen crashes on Windows
7. All N1MM settings are the same as I use OK under XP so I see the KUSB
(different chipset) as a possible fix but I'd like to hear it's actually
working for somebody before I order one.

[Elecraft] K3 - Multiple Serial Inputs?

2012-09-15 Thread Barry Pfeil
I have been running multiple programs (K3 Utility, WSJT, N1MM,
Digipan) that send PTT or other info to/from the K3 over the serial port
(which I have connected via a Keyspan USB/serial adapter, if that matters).
Only one program is running at any time so no problem.

I'd like to be able to run some of these programs on different computers.
How do I bridge the serial outputs? I don't believe the K3 knows
which program it is talking to, so is it as simple as making a Y cable
for the serial ports? Or do I need some other active device (and
software?)?

Re: [Elecraft] Best add on for K3

2012-05-23 Thread Barry Pfeil
Wayne AA5JJ, asked about favorite K3 add ons.

My personal favorite added after initial purchase was/is the KDVR3 Digital
Voice Keyer. It's the cat's meow if you are a phone contester. Messages
can be activated by macros from your logging software and the best part is
you eliminate the audio cable from the computer and also have zero concern
about matching the message audio with the live mic audio. I know many
who need more than four messages (the KDVR3 limit) and/or who spend a lot
of time tweaking their computer-stored messages and I know that works to
their benefit, but for KISS crowd (that includes me) I think the KDVR is
great.

It sounded like you meant internal add-ons, but if you include external
equipment, the P3 has to be the first choice, IMHO.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft at the Orlando ARRL Hamcation this weekend

2011-02-11 Thread Barry Pfeil
I just left the Elecraft booth an hour or so ago and the K-Line (LOVE that
name) did look great with the K3-P3-KPA500 combination bolted side-by-side.
With
the amp at 26 pounds in weight per Eric, I'd guess the whole station comes out
well under 50 pounds . Of course you have to add a DC supply for the K3 but
you
might still get in under 50 lbs overall even with a KAT500R added. IMPRESSIVE!!

I live in Silicon Valley not that far from Elecraft and that's USUALLY where I
see Eric. But I'm in Florida visiting a relative so thought I would check out
the Hamcation. Since Eric wasn't expecting to see me it was fun to see his
little double-take when he did and admitted to wondering for a millisecond if
he
had REALLY just traveled 2500 miles :-) It's a pretty decent show - check it
out if you can,

[Elecraft] K3 APF - Turning it on

Hi Craig. Page 35 of the most recent manual has APF instructions.

Also, searching the Elecraft web site for APF brings up exactly ONE entry,
that being some release notes for the 4.22 Firmware here:

I haven't tried APF since it was in it's earliest beta incarnation but these

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - KDVR bug?

2010-11-16 Thread Barry Pfeil
Well, that eliminates using the K3 with VOX in the manner I described for
speaking the first (variable) part of a contest exchange and using the DVR for
the second (fixed) part as in Sweepstakes.  MY logic says that if the DVR can
start while PTT is activated by the footswitch it should do the same when the
PTT is activated by the VOX.  I hate to suggest it, but maybe this could be one
more option on the DVR operation?

[Elecraft] K3 - KDVR bug?

2010-11-15 Thread Barry Pfeil
Recently installed the KDVR3 and still trying to figure it out.  Two questions:

1. In setting up for the Sweepstakes contest, I want to use the microphone to
speak the first part of my exchange, that is the other station's call and the
number and precedence I am giving him, e.g., W1XYZ, you're number 123 Uniform
and I want to use the KDVR for the rest, e.g., K6RM, 59, Sierra Charlie
Victor.  I've programmed the N1MM macros from N6ML's
site  http://www.dseven.org/ar/n1mm-kdvr3  to drive the K3 DVR and they work
great when pushing the physical N1MM Function keys or clicking same on-screen.

BUT, when using VOX, I've discovered that the message won't play if I try to
start it (with the N1MM F-key or ENTER in ESM mode) while the PTT is still
asserted from my earlier speaking.  If I wait that fraction of a second until
the VOX PTT drops (i.e., when I hear noise in the headset again) before I
initiate the message, it plays fine.  Switching to the footswitch instead of
VOX, everything plays fine even if I keep the footswitch down while the DVR
message is starting.  Seems like the same logic in the K3 that allows that
should also apply to the VOX PTT assertion, but apparently it does not?  Is
this
expected behavior or maybe a bug or needed enhancement in the DVR?

2. I find that the playback level of the DVR is a function of the MIC GAIN
setting when recording.  In other words, changing the MIC gain during playback
does NOT affect then playback level.  However, the DVR evidently stores
UNCOMPRESSED audio because the compression DOES vary directly with the COMP
control during DVR playback.  Again, is this normal/expected?

With all due respect, I LOVE my K3, but  I HATE having to experiment (or read
this reflector) to learn things like this when it SHOULD be in the manual.
Frankly, IMHO, the K3 manual stinks.

Yes.

The DVR is after MIC GAIN and before filtering/processing, so it records based
on the mic gain setting, and plays back to the system at that same exact level.

Subject: Re: KDVR

Hi Barry,

Yes, I was using the KDVR3 for voice keying - really I only used it
for my CQ(s). N1MM doesn't explicitly support use of the KDVR3, but it
does allow you to send arbitrary commands to the K3, so I use the
commands that emulate pressing the M1-M4 buttons. I was pleasantly
surprised yesterday when I instinctively hit the Escape key to
interrupt my CQ when I thought I heard someone calling, and it
actually worked! I'm really not sure why it works - there may be some
hidden magic that sends a stop command to the K3 on hitting Escape. I
have yet to inquire about that.

Anyway, here are the messages I use for this... theoretically this
should work for SO2R, but I haven't really tested that thoroughly (I
only have one K3 at home)...

F1 CQ,{CATA1ASC K31;SWT21;}{CATA2ASC K31;SWT21;}
F2 Exch,{CATA1ASC K31;SWT31;}{CATA2ASC K31;SWT31;}
F3 Thanks!,{CATA1ASC K31;SWT35;}{CATA2ASC K31;SWT35;}
F4 {MYCALL},{CATA1ASC K31;SWT39;}{CATA2ASC K31;SWT39;}

The main benefit of this is that it avoids all of the hassles of
getting the audio routed through the computer working right and
sounding decent - instead you just plug your headset (or fav mic)
straight into the radio and go. Message recording is done with the
buttons on the radio. Listeners should be unable to distinguish
recorded vs live audio, other than by the repetition.

A possible down-side is that N1MM doesn't know when the playback of a
message ends - in fact it doesn't even know that a message is being
played. Things like repeating (or, worse, dueling) CQs could be a bit
tricky.

For something quick and easy, it works quite well...

hit buttons on the radio.

What makes this easier than just using the radio?  Seems to me that
its just as easy to press M1 as F1...  Also now that VOX can now stop
tx of a DVR message stopping it is as simple as pressing nearly any
button or beginning a transmission.  Heck ESC would probably also work
if you initiated w/ M1 if it works when you press F1.

 F1 CQ,{CATA1ASC K31;SWT21;}{CATA2ASC K31;SWT21;}
 F2 Exch,{CATA1ASC K31;SWT31;}{CATA2ASC K31;SWT31;}
 F3 Thanks!,{CATA1ASC K31;SWT35;}{CATA2ASC K31;SWT35;}
 F4 {MYCALL},{CATA1ASC K31;SWT39;}{CATA2ASC K31;SWT39;}

Been readin the mail about a variety of things associated with the K3.  It
turly must be a wonder machine.  Mine is SN 763 and it must have some built in
capabilities that i don't know about.

Everyone along with the book says that to run souncard related programs you
should attach a cable from the line in and line out to the soundcard related
jacks.  Well i'm telling you that must not be  necessary.  And i don't know
why.  All i have hooked to my K3 is the RS-232 cable that goes to the PC for
control and talking to the radio.  I'm using HRD for kicks.  Nothing connected
to the Line out/Line in jacks at all.  Nothing from the speaker out nor phones
out jacks.  And yet, i still see good displays when running the DM780 program.
I can copy PSK, RTTY and CW if i want.  Why?  How is this working unless it's
going thru the RS-232 cable?  I'm not doing any transmitting yet on the digital
modes but this is not supposed to happen from the way i understand it.  There
must be some magic here that i don't understand.  Any suggestions other than to
get analyzed?

[Elecraft] K3: Configuring N1MM to send CW

2009-02-17 Thread Barry Pfeil
VE3KI's explanation is absolutely correct, but I would add a CAUTION that once
you have this arrangement set up, be careful to boot your computer and N1MM
BEFORE turning on your K3 or at least before enabling transmit.  This is
because some of the start-up processes seem to key the radio when you
wouldn't want it to be keyed.  I'm using a USB-to-Serial converter and that may
makes things worse (or better?).

[Elecraft] K3 - Wild Fan Action

2009-01-12 Thread Barry Pfeil
Ken, there IS a way to turn the fans on constantly.  It's normally just used
for checking the fans during the construction process. Hold MENU to go to the
CONFIG mode, turn VFO B to KPA3, then  rotate VFO A from Norm to FN1, FN2, etc,
depending on which fan speed you like. then tap MENU to leave CONFIG mode.  I
tried transmitting (CW) with it set this way and it seems normal.

[Elecraft] FLx GN at Maximum

2008-12-09 Thread Barry Pfeil
Is it unusual or does it cause any problem to have a filter gain setting at
it's max value?  Is that gain occurring in the IF DSP or elsewhere?
Following the procedure below I ended up with the gain for my 400 Hz roofing
filter set at the maximum 8 dB setting.

I used the Elecraft XG1 (set at 50 microvolts output level) direct into the K3
(sn 1774) which was in CW mode and set initially to the 7040 kHz nominal
frequency of the XG1.  I then used the CWT and SPOT controls to tune more
accurately, showing the oscillator to be about a 0.1 kHz low.  At the stock 2.7
kHz roofing filter width the AFV indicated 1248.  With the 1.8 kHz roofer it
showed 1275 and initially the 400 Hz filter showed around 1130(?) with the FL3
GN set at 2 dB per the typical mentioned in the manual.  But using the AFV
indicator, I ended up increasing the FL3 GN to 8 dB, it's maximum setting.
This brought the AFV indication for the 400 Hz filter up to 1250.  Switching
between the filters and just listening, the signal levels do sound exactly the
same.

In the analog world, I'm sometimes concerned about calibration controls set
at their extremes but maybe it is an non-issue here?
Thanks, Barry, K6RM

Thanks, Lyle. Well, in that case, could I respectfully ask if such functions
could be added to the list of wanted improvements?  As a minimum I'd like to

live with turning one knob to disable the COMP but the EQ is obviously
much more difficult to disable or restore.  Anybody else out there agree?

As far as I can tell, there appears to be no ON/OFF function (button,

returning the respective controls to zero settings. Is that true?.

[Elecraft] K3 What mics are proplr using for SSB?

Someone asked about adapter for BM-10.  Save your money!  You don't need an
adapter if you plug into the rear panel.  The mono plug goes in the MIC  MONO
jack and the stereo plug (with ring between tip and sleeve) goes in the
PHONES  STEREO jack. Set the appropriate MIC menu selection.  I have one with
the HC4 element and it works great.

[Elecraft] K3: Spkrs/Phones switch - cool undocumented(?) feature

2008-10-15 Thread Barry Pfeil
I really like being able to plug my Heil headset into the K3 rear panel with no
adapters, etc.  BUT, when I want to listen via the speaker, I find it
inconvenient to go through a menu change or to have to reach around the back of
the radio to unplug the phones .

I'm still exploring this rig and just discovered that I could program one of
the PF switches to access the SPKR+PH menu item to turn the speaker on and
off even with phones still plugged in.  I expected that when I did so I would
have to hold PF1 and then rotate the VFO A knob each time but that still seemed
better than reaching around the back of the radio.

So I programmed the PF1 as mentioned above and was happily surprised to find
that when I hold the PF1 switch it actually TOGGLES between the two options
(Spkrs on/off ) EXACTLY like you would want it to!  Very cool.  Still loving
(and discovering) this radio!

[Elecraft] K3: PSK D ASCII mode

2008-10-10 Thread Barry Pfeil
The owners manual (Rev D1) that came with my SN1774 K3 says, on page 31, that
...PSK D lets you transmit via FSK IN, ASCII, or the keyer paddle. I take
this to mean I don't really need a transmit audio connection from the computer
my PSK31 software runs on to the K3. Apparently the transmit data would travel
over the same RS232 interface I've implemented for my contesting software and
the K3 would create the PSK warble internally. Very cool, BUT, everything I
read in the reflector archives talks about audio, not ASCII, interfaces for
transmit on data modes. Is this ASCII feature implemented in the K3? Do the
PSK programs now have such an option implemented? My hands-on PSK experience
is dated and with Digipan only.
  Thanks es 73,

[Elecraft] K3 - interfacing to N1MM Contest Logging software

2008-09-28 Thread Barry Pfeil
After a bit of frustration with poor documentation, I've got my laptop
connected to my new K3 using the Elecraft KUSB USB to Serial Adapter. I was
pleased to find a K3 option in the N1MM Configurer but I have a few questions.

ESCape key - In the configurer, N1MM says that ESC will not interrupt CW
keying via the radio communications port. But I'm using the DTR line on the
single RS232 interface for keying and ESC seems to instantly stop any F
key-initiated sending. Am I missing something?

Stop bits - I apologize for my naivete on this, but N1MM sets the stop bits at
2 while also noting that Elecraft recommends 1 stop bit. Anybody know why?
Should I change it to 1 stop bit? It works fine as is (2 stop bits) so I'm
basically in the if it ain't broke, don't fix it mode.

Speed - N1MM sets the speed at 4800 baud and also notes that Elecraft
recommends 4800-38,400 baud. The Elecraft KUSB adapter set itself initially
at 9600 baud. Any insights here? Again, I'm in don't fix it... mode

Thanks,

[Elecraft] K3 SN 1774 makes it's first contact

2008-09-25 Thread Barry Pfeil
Well, strictly speaking, I made the contact USING the K3 and it was an
interesting QSO at that. On 20 meter CW, using 50 watts to a G5RV pointing
exactly the wrong way, I answered a CQ from JA1NUT. Shin came back and gave me
a 559 (not bad from California at 2026Z) and immediately asked me if I was the
same K6RM that he had QSO's with many times in the '90s. I had to tell him
that Martin, the original holder of K6RM, was an SK since around 2005 and we
then briefly chatted about times gone by until band conditions deteriorated.

Now that I've christened the radio I'm studying/trying the great array of
features. My only disappointment so far is probably the result of my own
doing. There's a slight light leak around the buttons near the right side of
the LCD and I'm thinking that when I was jockeying everything around to fit the
FP board into the metal FP I probably knocked that little foam light blocker
out of position. For now I'm trying to get used to it because I don't relish
the idea of removing and reassembling the FP.

All in all, I continue to be a VERY HAPPY Elecraft customer. Thanks to Eric,
Wayne, and all the rest of the Elecraft crew!
