[Elecraft] K3 Software

2009-01-10 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
I just uploaded K3_EZ, a Windows application I've written for the K3
(Apologies to K3EZ!). It provides:

* A set of 5 'memory-like' frequency storage areas per band and mode

* A frequency and mode database, useful for SWL frequencies

* A graphic interface for the K3 RX and TX equalizers with a database for
storing favorite settings, MIC Gain, Compression, and setup notes

* 4 panels of information containing the majority of the K3 CONFIG settings
with 'one click' access to any of these for you to easily make changes

The application should run on WIN 98SE and up as long as Microsoft's .NET
Framework 2.0 or later is installed on your PC.
(See this http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/aa569263.aspx for
the latest info on MS .NET Framework)

You can download K3_EZ here: http://home.roadrunner.com/~n2bc/ follow the
link for K3 Software

Comments, questions, etc (bugs?) to me directly please: n...@stny.rr.com

Happens from DATA to AM and DATAR to AM (I tried all combinations xx to AM

Also occurs /w 6.0 kHz filter disabled, and on any band.

Hi Joe:

Consider the possibility of it being the software program you are running
on your PC in DATA mode. Quit the program first then switch to AM.

It's frequently a safe bet to blame the computer for anything that goes

2008-12-26 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
Weird Had the VOX gain at 60, changed it to 40 and it's OK now. Set
it to 100 and it's still OK.

What's weird is that there was no mic connected when it was acting up. I
had also unplugged everything except 12V power and a dummy load and it
failed every time.

Seems that simply changing VOX gain did the trick.

It's not 4/1/2009 already is it???

Re: [Elecraft] No On/Off for COMP EQ?

2008-11-08 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
There has been much chatter about the K3 EQ lately. I've written a small
Windows application that helps to 'manage' the equalizers. This is a work in
progress, and I'm not much of a programmer. You should take this to mean:
Caveat Emptor!

The application is being used by about 20 people now and I'm chasing a couple
bugs.

1) It does not behave well when access to the K3 is via N8LP's LP-Bridge. This
is NOT an LP-Bridge issue. There is no direct way to read the EQ settings
other than simulating button presses and reading the VFO B area. The problem
is that the EQ setting displayed on VFO B only appears momentarily and is then
replaced with the 'label' for the EQ band. Because LP-Bridge is polling the
K3, my app will sometimes miss the data.

2) The app is written in MS Visual Basic 2008 and requires ,NET Framework 2.0
or later. If your system does not have 2.0, it will be downloaded from
Microsoft. While this is not in and of itself a problem, I do have one user
that is having difficulty that looks like a problem in the Framework -
something that may well be beyond my capability to resolve.

You can peek at the application and download it here:
http://home.roadrunner.com/~n2bc/SW.htm

I'm looking for ideas for impovement - some are proposed on the subsequent web
page. I am in the process of improving the overall communications error
handling, improving the documentation, and looking at other ways to store the
EQ settings. No timetable for these as yet.

If this little utility is a help, great! I would prefer that any
communications regarding the program not be on the Elecraft reflector, but
rather direct to me. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW Keying via Serial Port?

2008-10-12 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
FWIW, I've been using N1MM Logger keying via the serial port (and earlier
via parallel port) since 'day 1' of Logger on many different PCs, WIN98 thru
Vista, 'real' serial ports and USB-to-serial ports, on different YaeComWood
rigs, a K2 and now my K3. It works just fine, always has.

The setup via the K3 is easiest of all since it does not require any
hand-made cable or level convertor/keying switch, just a quality standard
serial cable. I'm not saying anything against the WinKeyer, never tried it,
never needed it.

Fred, you can get the K3 to key, but the timing available in Windows does
not allow good CW to be produced. The Workaround is to purchase a
WinKeyer USB from K1EL and insert it between the Computer USB port and the
Key jack on the K3. This is a function of Windows, not N1MM or the K3.
You can not get away from the problem by using different software or a
different transceiver. The WinKeyer USB has its own microprocessor to
generate the code and accepts the message to be sent in ASCII. The
WinKeyer controls the timing. It is not expensive and is very small. Get
particulars from www.k1el.com.

[Elecraft] K3 Equalizer utility

2008-10-06 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
I've written a Windows utility to help 'manage' the K3 equalizers. It has a
graphic display of the 8 EQ bands in the K3 equalizers, can read and set the
EQs, and allows you to quickly set/save various setups along with relevant
notes entered by you (mic type, gain settings, etc).

The program has been tested on XP and VISTA and should work on WIN/98 and up
if Windows .NET Framework 2.0 or later is installed (available from
Microsoft). It has been tested on K3s at FW 2.38 through 2.46.

The program installs via the Windows installer and is easily removed using
Add/Remove Programs.

I'm looking for a small number of folks (under 20) to use the program and
give me feedback. If / when I make it generally available it will NOT be
for a charge.

Please reply directly to me if interested - not via the reflector:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

If interested, please let me know the level of Windows and your K3 firmware
level. I'd be happy to send a screen-grab of the main form and the
documentation to anybody that's interested.

[Elecraft] K3 TX EQ for ESSB

[Elecraft] K3 Memories - Band changing etc.

2008-05-30 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
I miss dedicated band buttons even though my main rig has been a K2 for the
last couple years. Using the Quick Memories and M1..M4 work quite well
though.

But (you knew this was coming), the very thing that makes the Quick Memory
function handy can also be its downfall. Try as I might to be careful, I
continue to clobber the memory by pressing VM in error. Because the 00 - 09
locations are Quick Memories they are overwritten immediately when the
numeric keypad entry is pressed.

I would like to see either:

1) A menu entry to disable Quick Memory function for storing (VM only). In
other words when disabled, storing would require a second VM keypress just
like the rest of the memories.

or

2) A menu function to LOCK the Quick Memory areas. This would require
changing the menu entry to QUICK or NORMAL before entering anything in the
Quick Memories.

or

3) A combination of 1 2 to give the 00-09 locations a selection of QUICK /
NORMAL / LOCK.

I'm sure there are many contest operators that will use the Quick Memory
function during the heat of battle. A menu approach would not take anything
away from that use.

Just my $0.02. By the way, I grew up on DX-35s, Apaches, Drake 2Bs, HQ-170s
etc etc ,even with an occasional AW s^$ when I clobber a memory, band change
is a whole lot quicker!

[Elecraft] Re: K3 ERR PL 1 storing empty memory to VFO UPDATE

2008-05-22 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
After a power off and a radio club meeting (probably not relevant), my K3 is
behaving slightly differently.

The sequence:

Current freq: VFO A 1.870.000 LSB VFO B 1.890.000
press M V
select a null (empty) memory
press M V
BEEP
frequency now VFO A 50.010.000 CWVFO B 50.000.000--- last 6M freq /
mode set on 6M

no ERR PL 1

I realize trying to load the VFO from a null memory is 'wrong', but I would
expect the K3 to just stay where it was.

[Elecraft] K3 ERR PL 1 storing empty memory to VFO

2008-05-21 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
I was setting up some band edge memories (KM5Q's post of 5/10). I goofed and
hit MV instead of VM. Then selected an 'empty' memory position, the main freq
display was - - - -. I hit MV again. The VFO jumps to 49.9940 mHz and
displays ERR PL 1

Seems like the MV routine should test for a valid frequency.

Manual frequency entry or selecting a properly setup memory brings the K3 back
all OK.

I couldn't find reference to this - sorry if it's a dupe.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: Perfect K3 Speaker

2008-05-04 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
Wayne, I'm curious about what seems to be an emphasis on non-powered
speakers in your reply... why?

My op bench was getting overrun with speakers for various rigs. I picked up
an 8 channel stereo line level mixer and now run everything through a single
set of powered PC speakers. The mixer (Behringer RX-1602) automatically
mixes mono inputs as L+R and has a separate level adjustable stereo
headphone output. Each input can be individually switched on/off.

I did have to make a handful of isolation transformers to get rid of some
ground loops but the mixer powered speakers tolerate legal limit RF levels
well.

Hi Bruce,

For communications bandwidths, a sturdy 4-ohm, 3 or 4 diameter mobile
speaker (non-powered) does a great job. For a bit more fidelity and to
take advantage of the K3's stereo speaker outputs, I use a pair of good
quality bookshelf-style speakers (again, non-powered).

Right now I'm using Best Buy's Insignia, 4-inch, 3-way surround
speakers, which sound quite good, although they're 8 ohms rather than 4
so the available per-channel peak power will be lower. They're about 4W x
8H.

I had been using just a single speaker, but having two allows me to get
L/R separation of the main and subreceivers, as well as take advantage of
the K3's AFX simulated stereo mode.

2008-03-20 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
It took a sting of posts this morning for the 'light' to come on - my QST
has not arrived yet.

My very first April QST was back in the early 60s. There was an article
about tapering a single wire feedline to concentrate the power going to the
antenna, full of formulas to derive the proper lengths and diameters. After
crunching the numbers with my trusty sliderule, I took it in to my math
teacher. We worked on it together, she concluded there was an error in the
formula as the answer was always zero.

I then asked my elmer about it - he is still laughing.

Not sure off the top of the head but I'm sure that if you pull up a
schematic for a kenwood mic you'd get the answer. I do know that that is
not yet implemented in the firmware. I remember Wayne mentioning that a
while back and haven't seen it added in any of the recent release notes.

Quoting Fern Rivard [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Can anyone please enlighten me on whether the UP and Down feature on
the microphone connect work against ground or +8 volts dc.

2008-03-05 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
This is normal according to our resident guru, W3FPR. The END signifies
out of band - a lockout for the US CB frequencies. The K2 sets power to 0.
The power stays at 0 until you tweak the power control no matter where you
dial the VFO or what band you set.

Bill,

I have exactly what you saw. Having reduced freq from above 25MHz there
was

still no output even though I was now in the 12m band. QSY to within any
other band and still no output. How strange! I'm using latest firmware
etc.

As with you, TX was restored by changing the power level. And the radio
works fb otherwise. So you are not alone...!

[Elecraft] K3: Hardware changes

2008-02-27 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
My, my... Here's what I propose. All you folks that are disappointed that
there may be a change in their K3, please send Lisa an email and ask her to put
your order on hold until the K3 stabilizes.

I would love to get bumped up in the queue. Further more I hope you never get
your K3. Why, because I hope it never stabilizes.

As the K3 'product line' gets fleshed out - you know, things like panadapters,
linears, ??? - there will likely be lots of changes.

If this is 'scary, if the changes are kept 'secret', then I guess you can wait
for the K3 PRO 4, or the K3 Mark 7G3.

Secret' is what YaeCOMWood does!

Now, lets all get back to discussing important things, like the K3 color.

Sorry for the rant, back to my K2

[Elecraft] K2: Low power out on 12M 10M

K2 # 6254 Only abt 1W out on 12M, 5W out on 10M. Worked FB when I assembled
it last fall. I've been all over the 12/10M bandpass components with fresh
solder.

I went through TX alignment found 20/17/15/12/10 all improved - but only
ended up with the above power levels for 12/10.

I have not compared voltages band-to-band at the bandpass output yet, will
drag out the scope tomorrow. Then I'll look at the 12/10 LP filter area.
Any other quick-hitters I should look at before I pull the bottom rear

Re: [Elecraft] electronic product standards

2008-02-13 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC

Mic 'standard' - never happen - at least I hope it never happens.

They started out with one pin for audio and could end up with one pin for
everything as more and more 'brains' are moved into the microphone and the
connection to the radio turns into a one-wire serial link. This could give
us a compatible connecter with completely incompatible 'data streams'.

Break out your wire cutters and soldering iron. Visit
http://www.qsl.net/g4wpw/date.html to view the myriad of pin-outs for and
within each of the manufacturer's microphones and radios.

If we need a standard, I propose that it be based on a 14-pin JONES plug,
that would look pretty nifty on the front of the future K4.

OK, /sarcasm off I'll go shovel the driveway.

I believe a similar article appeared in QST in the late 1960's.

Steve Brandt N7VS ex: WB6VVS, WN6QYP Portland, Oregon

Some time back, W3FQB (SK) wrote a story called The Man Who Broke The

Bank
about a techno-ham who built a fully automated SS station and proceeded
to

make an incredible score. The computer did everything - tuned across all

the

bands looking for new ones, called CQ, made the QSOs, kept the log,

decided where

the best points-rate could be found, etc. He just sat and watched it go,

and

occasionally keyed it manually just to have something to do.

The article was in QST for May, 1953.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: KRC2 interface

2008-01-30 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC

Hi Don,

Do you mean the K3 AUX I/O Pin 10 KEYOUT-LP line? The purpose of this
line is a bit fuzzy, to me anyway.

I based my KRC2 'needs' list based on page 21 of the KRC2 manual.

The paragraph at the top of the page states that the minimum required for a
K2 are:

W16 - AUXBUS
W18 - 12V (can be provided via external source)
W19 - 8R
W21 - to pass PC serial info to K2 (not needed in K3)
W23 - ditto W21

Table 3 states that the KRC2 uses 8R to determine TX/RX status, I would have
thought to inhibit band changing while transmitting.

I just tried the KRC2 without feeding it 8R from the K2 (W19 pulled). 8R is
indeed not 'needed' to handle the band info from the AUXBUS. Tried changing
bands on the K2 while key down or asserting PTT - it won't change. But the
K2 remembers the band change key press and does change once key down or PTT
is dropped the KRC2 follows.

Anywho, it looks like the K2 is smart enough to not change bands while in TX
the KRC2 will follow the AUXBUS as/when ordered. I'm sure the K3 is at
least that smart [ ;-) ] So I amend my KRC2 needs list to simply AUXBUS
and ground - GREAT!

Bill,

The KRC2 does not need the 8R input for use with the K2 or K3. Look at
page 20 of the KRC2 manual and you will see that the KRC2 uses 8R only as
an analog input.

The KeyOut signal timing is equivalent to the K2 8R signal.

[Elecraft] K3/10 Power levels

2007-12-13 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
I've got a K3/10 with a KXV3 on order. I have a vintage military amp that
only needs 100 to 150mW of drive.

I've studied the RX antenna options provided with the K3 and KXV3 but still
have questions:

Can I reliably set the output power at the 100mW level (band-to-band) ?

Ideally I would like a dedicated 100mW level TX output and a separate dedicated
RX input. I think the separate RX input is possible via the KXV3 but it
bypasses the front end bandpass filters. Is that correct?

I think another approach could be to run the amplifier off the KXV3 output at
1mW bumping it up with a broadband amp to 100mW. RX would then come in
through the normal ANT connection. Yes?

Right now I have a second antenna transfer relay on the amp input which
switches in a 30dB attenuator on TX to dump the 100W output of my transceiver
down for the amp. I can simply replace the 30dB attenuator with a 20dB or 15dB
and run the K3/10 at 'full' power. But with separate RX and TX on the K3 and
reliable 100mW output control, I can eliminate the second transfer relay and
the attenuator.

Thoughts?

Re: [Elecraft] K3: supplied power cable specs?

2007-10-24 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC

but.. the K3 is a no solder kit! Sorry...

I converted my shack and a couple op positions at our club shack to APP's -
soldered dozens of them, works great.

One tip: make sure of the orientation of the connector pins before
soldering especially on heavy gauge wire. This can be a bit tricky as the
pin will want to rotate on the wire as soon as you touch it with the
soldering iron (Murphy at work). It's important so you don't have to twist
the conductor to get the pin into the connector.

Also the little APP insertion tool is quite handy for small gauge wire.

So now we know, there are two solder connections on the K3 kit! (Four if
you count the PL-259)

[Elecraft] K3 and QSK

2007-09-21 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
This was an issue with the early Orion also. As I understand it, PTT in CW was
eventually implemented on the Orion.

Some of the contesting software will raise PTT and delay a user specified time
before keying to let the T/R switching settle. Also, on all the YaeCOMWood
rigs I have used, releasing PTT returns to RX 'instantly' - cancelling any
delay set for semi-breakin.

Not having a QSK amplifier, and not particularly caring for QSK at all, PTT in
CW capability is important to me. I routinely stomp on the foot switch to
eliminate the clatter during CW contacts with my ICOM rig - been doing this
ever since my DX-35 way to old to change now.

PLEASE make PTT active on CW in the K3! PLEASE

[Elecraft] K2 8T line resistance check

I'm at the second set of resistance checks on the RF board (page 62). All look
OK except U10 pin 8, the 8T line. It is over 1M ohm... Clearly that's 500
ohms, but looks like I have an open somewhere. The 8R line is 2.5K.

I've eyeballed all the components on the 8T line / solder joints, etc. Q23,
U10, Q20 (none of the PA circuits are installed yet).

Normal? or trouble?

It's not worth much, but the K2 is functioning perfectly on 40M RX.

[Elecraft] Resistance checks - check your meter too!

2007-09-11 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
Just did a quick scan of the K3 assembly manual - wonder how many downloads
so far..?? !! The following will likely apply to the K3 also - I'll find
out next year for sure.

I'm at the end of day one of assembling my second K2, just finished the
Control Board. Used my trusty (old) auto ranging Fluke DMM to perform the
resistance checks and went down the tubes on the 8V regulator output,
measures 500 ohms - should the 3 to 4 Kohms.

To make a long story short be careful. I did a simple test with the
Fluke connected across a 3K resistor - my handheld DMM says the Fluke is
applying almost 0.5V. Flipping the meters, the handheld DMM only applies
about 60mV - and the 8V bus resistance check is fine measured on the
handheld DMM.

Clearly the Fluke's 1/2V is on the hairy edge of some of the active devices
on the 8V bus. It's interesting that the lead polarity makes no difference
in the resistance measurement at all.

Now I'll carefully read the K3 assembly manual, then start the K2 front
panel. Hmmm... I wonder. Nah, I'll still end up with a K2.

[Elecraft] KPA100 (or K2) Power control

2006-02-06 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC

I'm having a difficulty with the power control in a freshly built
KPA100. When I set the power to 50W then key up (TUNE), I get appx 25W
(indicated on the K2 and external wattmeter). If I barely move the
POWER control on the K2 output will jump to 50W indicated on both the K2
and wattmeter. Each TUNE cycle is the same.

I'm not sure if the problem is in the KPA100 or my K2, as the K2 is not
very 'stable' either. With the KPA100 disabled I set the K2 to say 5W,
then enter TUNE, I get appx 7W output (indicated on K2 and wattmeter),
minor touch on the POWER control will drop the power to 4W, exit TUNE
and it says 5W. It behaves this way with the KPA100 set OFF or with no
PA PS or completely disconnected.

Confused? Well, I am! The bare bones K2 overshoots it power setting,
with the KPA100 it under achieves. :-)

All of my testing has been done with a known good dummy load. The
'problem' is not band sensitive.

How 'stable' should the K2 POWER settings be - if I set it to 5W should
I be seeing 5W indicated on the K2? I thought that under a good load
condition the firmware would 'match' the requested power and actual
power within a few tenths or so.

I figure the K2 needs to be fixed before I fiddle more with the KPA100 -
yes? Now the hard questions... what, where, why is the sky blue?
(wanted to have one easy question!).

Thanks all

Re: [Elecraft] can rf interference get into a k2?

2006-02-02 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
I doubt it's the cover holes. I've done some testing with the top and
bottom covers off while interfacing my newly built K2 to a 1500W
amplifier without any problems. (QRP is fun, but sometimes...)

Is your problem band sensitive? Is your antenna resonant? I would
suspect grounding problems.

Good luck! 73, Bill N2BC

of the unfilled openings can allow rf into a place where it could be a
problem?

Should I block the holes?

I would be delighted to find out this isn't a possibility in any case,

[Elecraft] Sidetone source

2006-01-23 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
Hi all, recently completed K2 #5290.

I've made a couple of posts during construction, all the 'bugs' I faced
were self-inflicted. Saturday I went directly from final alignment into
the middle of the NAQP and had a ball.

Yesterday I was on CW and while fiddling with various menu settings I
managed to lose my sidetone. I just figured out that I must have tapped
DISPLAY while in the sidetone level menu. When I use the secondary menu
to select U6-25 I have no sidetone. The recommended setting of U8-4 is
fine.

Do I have a bug? (self-inflicted or otherwise) If yes, should I worry
as the recommended U5-26 setting works fine? Why selectable sidetone
sources?

[Elecraft] [Fwd: K2 VCO, wrong frequency] **FIXED**

2006-01-11 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC

In the immortal words of Emily Latella. Never mind

Yes, I said I checked things carefully. Tired old eyes. K13 was not
soldered, sigh.

I still think the voltage chart for U4 pin 5 and 7 is incorrect (and the
places they connect to). Will report back later when I make it through
the rest of Part 2 alignment.

[Elecraft] K2 VCO, wrong frequency

2006-01-10 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
I'm building K2 #5290. Have made it through the second session on the
RF board (Assembly Part II). The VCO freq is wrong

The PLL Ref Osc range is 12098 to 12084. I'm seeing a stable 12445 on
the VCO (TP1), VFO set for 4000.1.

I've eyeballed the RF board carefully with a magifying lens didn't
find anything conclusive. I looked at U4 with a scope and am not sure
if I'm seeing my bug, have my setup wrong, or the voltage chart is wrong.

U4 pin 5 (SDO) is zero and goes high (+5) with pulses on band +/-
(measurement chart says +5)
U4 pin 7 (SCK) is +5 and goes low with pulses on band +/- (measurement
chart says 0)

Given that the MCU can 'move' the PLL Ref Osc, that pretty well says
that the SDO and SCK lines are OK, right?

All the rest of the pins on U4 look reasonable per the measurement chart.

I've double checked L30, T5, D23-D26

I suspect I'm barking up the wrong tree with the SDO and SCK lines...
Where next?

Thanks! 73, Bill N2BC

PS: My first big kit was an SB-100 in 1965 I think. It's first power
on was much more dramatic than the K2. Smoke curling up from the
chassis. A hunk of miniature coax carrying low B+ was shorted. That's
when I figured my homebrew power supply should probably have some fuses

[Elecraft] Minor kit building tip

2006-01-05 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
I've just started building K2#5290. Thought I would pass along a small
building tip.

The search function of the current Adobe PDF reader is quite handy for
finding things in the manual.

Example 1: Having just finished populating the caps on the Control
Board, I noticed the spot for C44 was empty. A quick search of the PDF
manual on C44 took me to page 21 and explained that C44 is unused.

Example 2: At this point I had expected all the non-electrolytic caps
to be mounted, but I had one .01uF (103) left over. Since I had done a
thorough inventory, I figured I screwed up. A search on 103 eventually
took me to page 20 and the added C46 for the keying shaping circuit on
the bottom side of the board.

A caution... after finding your info in the PDF manual, double check
with your errata marked-up paper manual!

Anyway, the search function saves a lot of time flipping pages - and is
undoubtedly more thorough than scanning with tired eyes. It works on
the schematic pages too!

Having fun!

[Elecraft] K2 #5290 Underway

#5290 arrived today. I've enjoyed reading the reflector for the past

[Elecraft] K2 minimum power our

2005-12-24 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
I'm considering a K2. The power out spec says .5W... how much less?
I'm not much of a QRP op, my amplifier only needs 100 to 150mW. If the
K2 will reliably go to 100mW or less I can skip inserting an attenuator
and simplify T/R switching.

Happy holidays to all de Bill N2BC
