Connecting a 13.8V source to it (one that was plugged into the house power) didn't really change whether the 'buzz' was present or not. The only thing that changed it was either unplugging the offending power supply, or de-energizing that circuit in the house (by tripping the breaker). I guess it's not impossible that the thing was putting off a lot more energy than I thought, and I was picking up a lot of common-mode noise on the cable shield-- a lot more than I thought I would/should. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 AM-breakthrough
Wayne, Thank you for this very informative technical explanation. When I operated my HW-8 in the early 80's, I loved it because it was so simple to build, easy to operate and required little power. However, the KX3 is so superior I really cannot compare what you have engineered the KX3 to be vs. what the very challenged HW-8 was. Incredible contrast; excellent design using the modern techniques available, to produce an amazing piece of equipment. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Wayne Burdick Sent: Monday, July 29, 2013 11:28 PM To: Igor Sokolov Cc: Elecraft Reflector; Klaus Dittrich Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX3 AM-breakthrough "Igor Sokolov" wrote: > Every design has it's own limitations. True; according to Sherwood and our own lab tests, when the roofing filters are turned off, the dynamic range at 2 kHz drops from 104 dB or so to about 96 dB, which still puts the KX3 into the top 6 of all radios Sherwood has tested. His third listed value of 65 dB was a worst-case AF opposite-sideband (OSB) image, not IMD. OSB images are related to just one extremely strong nearby signal, and are less problematic than IMD, which results from multiple combinations of signals. (The AF OSB image drops considerably when you apply RX SHFT=8.0, because it is now well out of the audio passband.) Fortunately the RX SHFT setting is per-band, so you only need apply it on affected bands. You also have the alternative of reducing preamp gain from 20 to 10 dB. PREAMP gain, too, is a per-band setting. The KX3's direct-conversion architecture simultaneously satisfies the requirements of small size and low current drain, optimizing for portable/battery use. A superhet (like the K3) would have taken too many parts (in particular, at least three crystal filters), and a direct-digital-downconversion architecture would have required much greater supply current, as well as being far higher in cost. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Most have found that the mod successfully eliminated the noise or knocked it down to insignificant levels on all bands. A few have found that it helped only on some bands, or not as much as expected. This could be because the noise was already near the lowest level obtainable with the modification. In any event, the firmware noise-reduction methods mentioned in the document may still be required on some bands, on some KX3s. In answer to a couple of questions we've received: The modification done at the factory, and the easier field-modification described in the document, are absolutely identical in effect. We tested both methods on numerous KX3s. In addition to the hardware modification, we're continuing to experiment with improvements to the VFO NR algorithm available in the menu. I decided to order and build a PA-100D linear from JUMA Radio as a surface mount kit. It is a very compact linear which will produce up to 150 watts out with between 3 and 10 watts drive. It is well filtered and from tests I have done has a very clean output. Using my KX3 As a 2 tone generator I measured 2nd order distortion of better then -28 db. The JUMA engineers measured greater then -33 db with 90 watts out using calibrated lab equipment. With the new firmware it will work with the rs232 from the KX3 and other rigs so will select the proper output filter (switch bands) or you can use RF detect or manually select the band. It is crammed with safety interlocks and protection circuitry. If I want to run more power I use the output of the JUMA linear to drive my Heathkit SB 220. I have received excellent reports from many stations, many with K3/P3 and Flex Radios that could see my output. It does use a cooling fan on the heat sink but is very quiet. Running PSK31 using the linear with 30 watts out the fan never got to full speed. This kit is 450 euros ($600.00 USD) so it's not cheap. Is it as good as the new Elecraft KXPA 100? Probably not and it doesn't cover 6 meters. But if you like a challenge and want a good linear to boot then check out WWW.JUMARADIO.COM. GC Electronics has a much less expensive similar product called "DE-OX-ID" which is 60% Aliphatic Hydrocarbon, 35% Kerosene with the remaining 5% being more hydrocarbon solvents according to its MSDS. Re: [Elecraft] A Rob Sherwood's talk in Dayton
Ed, Glad I never discussed the same issue with the wife when I bought the K2. I now own the K3 and KX3. The K2 is my hearty backup in case of issues. The Kx3 is my living room radio, if you can believe it. The KX3 can be routed through my THP 2.5 for a 300 watt signal provided I have selected and tuned for the correct band while in the living room. The continuous improvement and support of the K3 make it possible for me to keep that promise, as I see the radio evolving for long time. Eric, If one has the money, why not own them all? Then we can get user feedback. No lab stats. I own other equipment besides Elecraft as does Wayne and perhaps Eric, too. YaeComWood gave us the need for other manufactures. They have missed the mark for user needs. They fail miserably in the US for usability and testing. I made an adapter from a small box that has a male BNC on one end, diodes inside, and a female BNC on the other end,I use a whip with a bnc for general hunting, or a coax cable to a hand held loop antenna for some directional work, depending on freq in use. Works quite well as you can see the noise pattern that is bugging you and see the signal increase or decrease much better than on a metered instrument. For a battery I steal one of my model aircraft LiPo types, have several packs that are 5000 ma 12 volt, they last plenty long to noise hunt. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 power source
Gerald, I run 1500 through mine. I tune first into a load that has low SWR first before I use the Tuner as it won't handle high swr at the legal limit based on the specs. Obviously it is safer to do so at 500 watts and it is pushing the design and component limits should one chose to do so at 1500 watts. I currently have a remote tuner near the antenna load and am using the KAT500 in the shack. (Yes, I know, double tuner loss) This gives my amp a near perfect load. The remote tuner doesn't get it at near 1:1, but I see < 1.3:1 to the Kat500 which provides the near 1:1. You can do the math to see the amount of reflected power, I don't have to, I have a meter in the amp to tell me that my reflected power is near 0 merely a meter twitch. I would rather waste a tuner than a $6K amp. 73, Bill K9YEQ K2 FT, KX1 FT, KX3 FT, KAT500 FT -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Gerald Manthey Sent: Thursday, May 02, 2013 9:21 AM To: Dick Dievendorff Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 power source Dick, On the Elecraft web site in the news section it reads in part " The KAT500 uses the same topology and high performance tuning algorithms as the popular 100W autotuner in the K3. Whatever AV program you use, doesn't mean you are not subject to a virus loaded by script via email or an infected web site. I do computer work as a part time effort and I spend a lot of time cleaning systems. Try downloading an additional program such as Malwarebytes to run a scan. You don't need to do more than do a trial version. Once loaded I usually uninstall and then download a new version once I get odd behavior on my PC. There are other programs to use. The key here is not to have a multitude of AV programs running at once or you will run into additional problems. Re: [Elecraft] OT: For New Hams, How to Tell What an Amp Will Do For Your Signal
Dave, Well stated. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- That's a good resource but it doesn't tell the whole story. An amplifier will give you around 10 db improvement in signal on the other end. That's more than the difference between a dipole and a five element monobander. As little as 3 or 4 db will make a significant difference when competing against others in a pileup, and of course as little as 2 db can make the difference between no copy and clear copy if your signal is right at the noise level. http://www.ab7e.com/weak_signal/mdd.html Hams have turned their noses up at amplifiers for decades, but the reality is that an amplifier and a decent vertical is often a more cost effective way to put out a good signal than is low power to a tower and big antenna ... especially if you live in a low noise area where you don't need lots of discrimination to hear DX (and even then there are compact receive loops that make possible alternatives). You might not know it yet, but some LED bulbs are bad RFI devices as well, esp., the cheap ones. My entire office and workshop are LED lighted and I have removed the junk devices. I paid too much for some that are inferior. The US bulbs seem to be the best choice. Not only is the construction better IMO, but I don't see the radiation issues either. PC's and power warts are always on the watch list. I am amazed by the noise output of older HDD. Nasty stuff. I am now using SSD's and the best HDD for storage... still issues with noise on some bands. Shielded power cables have less issues in general, but that is also based on quality. Shielding means nothing unless properly terminated on both ends and the quality of the shielding and termination as well (look at the Coax we use to learn much about shielding... another science in its own right). 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Fred Jensen Sent: Thursday, March 07, 2013 6:04 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] P3 - spikes that never move Anthony, Been out of town, didn't see a reply to you when I got home and downloaded 500+ emails. :-) What P3 mode are you using? There is an identified problem with the K3-->P3 IF cable. In Fixed Tune mode [where the ends of the span remain fixed and the VFO cursor moves as you tune], the bad IF cable will put weak signals approximately 14.5 KHz above and below the cursor. They move with the cursor hence you can never tune to them. Signals that slowly move by themselves are almost always external to the K3/P3. Our world is filled with a nearly countable infinity of RF noisemakers these days. CFL light bulbs are notorious and could account for the slow disappearance as they warm up. If your signals disappear when you remove the antenna, that's a pretty good indication that they're external to your radio. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2013 Cal QSO Party 5-6 Oct 2013 - www.cqp.org On 3/3/2013 11:08 AM, Anthony Lewis wrote: > I have three spikes on my P3, however they do move - very slowly they will creep along the display. Re: [Elecraft] ATT level on K3
Bruce, I have noted this as well. I rarely use the RF gain. I am a SSB user. The Attenuator elevates the noise level. I prefer to use it to eliminate the noise level. Re: [Elecraft] P3 generates noise on 144MHz
I would add further "noise" to the noise concerns... during the process of repairing PC's/Macs/etc. it is very apparent there are a plethora of pathetic power supplies and converting devices in the shack. My P3 detects them very well. The great thing about the P3 is I can disconnect and find the offenders. It's nice my antennas are relatively far away but the idea of shack noise, which does affect all my receiving equipment, it is very helpful to note the noise floor on the P3... The power connection to the P3 appears to need coaxial shielding and filtering, IMHO. I have mine connected via the K3 power, and it is via a simple power splitter. This isn't so hot. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Roger Crofts Sent: Sunday, February 17, 2013 4:55 PM To: elecraft reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] P3 generates noise on 144MHz I fitted a commercial EMI filter (intended for 240V AC operation) inside my P3. It is a fully sealed unit with solder tags. This unit was connected in the + and - DC supply line. This filter completely removed any trace of noise from the power cord to the P3. I used a short coax with a one inch extension of the center wire to act as a "sniffer" to determine where the noise was coming from. This coax was connected to the K144XV input. Did this solve the problem? No! not entirely. I discovered there was now a small amount of noise being radiated from the RS232 lead and the IF input coax. These cables had been free of noise before. It seems to me that it is acting a bit like a boiling kettle - Block the spout and the steam comes out the holes in the lid! Why was there so much noise generation in the first place? I used my sniffer inside the P3 box to try and track down the precise source of the noise. But no luck. The noise was overwhelming everywhere at S9 + 20dB rising to S9 + 40dB near any of the ICs. This was on any frequency in the 2 meter band and beyond. At this point I re-visited the earthing between the panels that make up the P3 box. If you have been following this thread, you will know that I had previously cleaned all the mating surfaces. I looked again at the front panel. It is connected by four screws to the corner blocks. You can see where rectangles of masking tape have been placed to prevent the black paint from reaching the area which will mate with the corner blocks. The masking tape has not quite reached the edge of the board, leaving a one mm wide strip of paint right at both corner edges. It seemed very unlikely that this was preventing a good connection between the panels. Nevertheless I removed all trace of the paint in all four corners of both the front and back panels using a file and sharp knife. Did this have any effect? Well Yes! It reduced the noise by about 6dB. The noise which had started at S9 + 5dB was now down to about S3 which was the target value. The carriers at 19KHz spacing were just, but only just, perceptible with the 2 meter antenna connected. It would have been interesting to know what the noise would now be like without the EMI filter. Sorry guys (and gals), I did not do that experiment. When you have got something that works - leave it alone! I was also able to connect my other accessories to the switched 12V line from the K3 without affecting the noise. Another effect of my paint scraping exercise was that the position of the P3 was no longer critical. Before, if I pulled the P3 forward, the noise went down, but returned with the P3 in its correct position aligned with the K3. I don't have a USB to RS232 connection, but rather a real DB9 Port. I'm pretty sure it is the correct port. I know Windows can reassign ports at times, and I think I have eliminated that. The reason I believe that to be so is because with the P3 Utility program, on the Ports tab, the Test Communications button returns the message "P3 Waiting for firmware load. RS-232 speed 38400 bit/sec." when clicked. Also, when I direct the P3 utility to "Send Checked Items to P3" (with MCU checked) under the Firmware tab, a progress bar appears on the utility program and works its way across the window, taking about a minute. Simultaneously with this, a white progress bar appears on the P3 screen. When they both complete after about a minute, that is when the P3 displays: P3 BOOT LOADER CHECKSUM TEST FAILED CHECKSUM READY FOR DOWNLOAD I have repeated this process a number of times. I have power cycled the P3 and K2, and rebooted my PC. I also disconnected the P3 from the K3 so that the RS232 DB-9 cable is connected to the P3 only, and not daisy chained further to the K3. Every combination behaves consistently, giving the minute long wait with the P3 utility program and the P3 progress bars progressing as I would expect. Then the P3 display indicates a checksum error and says it is "READY FOR DOWNLOAD." The P3 Utility program seems to time out and display the following after 5-10 seconds: Error code 0xE248: No response to poll while synchronizing to buffer boundary MCU verification failed. Reload MCU. Click "Close" to close this window It's possible it is a communications problem or port mixup, but if it is, I can't understand why the P3 unit's progress bar would respond to the upload. I will pass all of this information along to Elecraft support. I was hoping someone else has encountered this, but it seems unique to me. Everything worked fine until I tried to upgrade from firmware version 1.20 to 1.24. 73, Paul VE1DX __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I now consider it for use ONLY on metal parts. Instead I borrow a trick from my post WWII aircraft service days: paint. A drop of fingernail polish between the nut what it tightens against works very well. If you don't want it visible, paint the threads with some and then put the nut on over it, or paint the face of the nut that presses against the fan with black fingernail polish (a common color nowadays :-) and screw it in place before it dries. It's not so strong that you can't remove the nut, but it should prevent loosening due to fan vibration. And then there's always lock washers. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of P.J.Hicks As long as we are talking screws I thought I'd mention a situation that occurred last night. While moving my K3 to get at the rear panel I noticed that one of the acorn nuts from one of the fans had fallen off. In checking the rest of them I found them in various stages of looseness. I suspect that the minor fan vibration caused them to loosen. I retightened them and plan on adding a bit of locktight in the next few days. Just a heads up. Fred, Likewise. I have so much Elecraft stuff I don't want to miss anything important to me. I don't bother with any messages that don't include the proper subject. Re: [Elecraft] New Output Power Issue
Ian, As a bottom up reader, I see you have plenty of advice already. I would also like to point out in addition to what I posted below, I had an extra set of fuses and a Red-Dee connect 45 amp distributor in line with the battery backup/power supply and this alone added > 1.5v drop. With those two items out of line, I now see the ~ 12v to my radio and I get out the full 100 watts from the radio under load. Those two items added an additional 4 connections or 16 surfaces. If I wanted almost zero drop, I would take out the RigRunner and put power directly to the radio. This would drop it further. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Bill K9YEQ Sent: Monday, December 24, 2012 5:26 PM To: 'Ian Kahn - Ham' Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] New Output Power Issue Ian, I would suggest before suspecting anything in between the power supply, check the voltage and the power supply terminals before tearing into anything. You already know the transceiver shows load voltage under load. If the voltage drops low at the supply then you have the culprit. If not, then go to the next connection and then measure it while transmitting. I had a voltage drop that I didn't like with the supplied power supply cable and replaced it with a 10 gauge high quality stranded cable. I took out my ASTRO Flight current/voltage wattage monitor which had lighter wiring, I ran my radio connection to my RigRunner and then measured. Voltage and output much improved. You could start from the rear of the radio, work toward the power supply, but you at least eliminate it. I do see a wiring/connector voltage drop at 20 amps draw from 13.5 volts through my PowerGate battery backup to the RigRunner which shows a voltage on the Astro Flight, which I use to monitor voltage coming off the rig runner itself, of ~12 v. I get CW output at the K3 of 100 watts out as monitored by the W2. It also wouldn't hurt to disconnect reconnect all the Andersons if that is what you are using. Re: [Elecraft] Why did I purchase this antenna for the KX3?
Mel, My favorite "antenna" is a 10W 50 Ohm resistor. I can contact my other stations in the shack :-). Then I use my full dipoles and loop for all the other outside the shack contacts. They work extremely well. For portable I do resort to shortened antennas, the best being those non resonant with good counter-poises and last but my favorites so far: loaded whips. I have a project on the side to develop a portable whip, super lightweight, to mount directly to the KX3. Mike, I think like everything in the world, we get used to something and the expectations get higher without realizing how really well we have it. The headphone jack doesn't use the same output amp as the internal speaker. As I remember my Heathkit SB-100 from 1966 had an internal pot to provide for reduced headphone volume when the front panel AF gain is set for speakers. Those who never use speakers can't relate, but I have wished for that option when I was using unpowered speakers that didn't have a volume control. Having the option would be nice. 73, Jim N7US -Original Message- I hate to belabor this rather minor issue but since there have been a couple "I don't get it" responses, here's why you haven't noticed it: Speakers vary widely in their drive requirements. If you have speakers that match your phones, lucky you. Mine don't. I use a set of bookshelf size hi fi speakers that take many dB more drive than my phones. It's not so bad having to turn the volume down but the monitor, since it (rightly, IMO) does not adjust with the volume, also needs to go down. This is a minor pain when you don't realize until you've already started transmitting that you forgot to change it. Another issue is that Speakers + Phones mode won't work well. If you're comfortable with the phones, your guests can barely hear the speakers. I very seldom use speakers any more. 73 -- Carl WS7L __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Speaker Buzz - (Probably) my last update
Phil, I did use the grill and gasket update and the gasket gave me adequate space from the replacement speaker front to the case to allow distortion free output. I had original applied small stick on feet near each corner which I think works quite well. I really think the maximum speaker output for such a little one occurs around 30+ volume setting with a strong S reading. That is too loud for my pleasure. I have added the Bose portable rechargeable stereo speaker to give higher output level. Personally, I think this speaker audio output is well designed, it is just an issue with some of the speakers not being symmetrical in the cone installation. Elecraft is excellent in the replacement process. I was able to slip the new speaker with grill and gasket into position without removing anything and found the existing screws worked better than the replacement bolts. YMMV. 73, Bill K9YEQ From: k...@yahoogroups.com [mailto:k...@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of phil_ad5x Sent: Wednesday, September 19, 2012 8:25 AM To: k...@yahoogroups.com Subject: [KX3] Speaker Buzz - (Probably) my last update As some know, I had a speaker buzz in the 400-800Hz range at low to moderate volume levels (15-20) that was so bad that it made using the internal speaker completely unusable for CW. The biggest improvement occured when Elecraft sent me a new speaker as the original speaker cone was offset and would touch the grill. However, I could still get the buzz at higher volume levels(>25). I significantly improved this by putting layers of black electrical tape between the bottom of the speaker bracket and the bottom case - i.e. I blocked the gap with layers of tape. But I've never been happy with the tape. My latest "fix": I took a 0.375"ID 0.625"OD rubber gromett (Mouser part number 534-745), snipped it, unfolded it, and installed it between the speaker bracket and bottom cover. This has comletely eliminated the buzz, except at maximum audio level (where the buzz is only just apparent). I've uploaded a couple of photos in the AD5X photo album that illustrates this better than words. Works great, and I'm a happy camper now! The only issue would be the hassle of keeping track of the snipped gromett if I were replacing internal batteries frequently, but I use external power. Incidentally, for serious operating I do use headphones. But I use the internal speaker for casual operating and general listening while working on projects in the shack. Hi Arnold, The KX3 has a really nice feature where all settings that can cause subtle issues if changed inadvertently are locked, so you have to hold the RATE button for a couple of seconds before it can change (padlock icon shown in the LCD). So you can go through the menu and see which items are not locked, and if you are concerned that one might not be on the default setting you can hold DISP for 2 seconds and it will show a help text for that option, the first part of the help text is the default setting so you can see if it's been changed straight away! 73, Thomas M0TRN On 16 September 2012 23:44, Arnold Harding wrote: While going through the menu items, my thumb accidently rotated the VFO knob. Re: [Elecraft] static buildup on antennas
Don, Did I not see a picture of your shack with a Matchbox, or am I thinking of someone else? As sweet as the link coupling is, I would think a servo controlled box could be designed as an automatic unit... perhaps Wayne could be talked into designing one starting at QRP level and eventually designing a QRO linker. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Don Wilhelm Sent: Monday, September 10, 2012 1:46 PM To: Ron D'Eau Claire Cc: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] static buildup on antennas Yes, link coupled tuners will solve a lot of those problems. Re: [Elecraft] K3 & Plasma Question
I like the idea of causing interference to Plasma, I know, which is a terrible thing to say. In my situation, the nearest neighbor is 1/4 mile away, so hopefully the effects of a plasma TV will not be apparent to me. That was the lowest power consumption TV, and since the XYL watches a LOT of TV, keeping the AC power consumed to a minimum was an important parameter. The LED displays do not create any interference as far as I can determine. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/10/2012 2:29 PM, Matthew Zilmer wrote: > Plasma TVs should be made explicitly illegal, because of the interference issues they cause on HF. The Sony has never, ever caused any sort of QRN on any of the ham bands. Because of that, we purchased the Samsung unit right after moving into this QTH. I did not have an HF antenna installed for several months after moving in - when I finally did get one put up, I saw some ugly QRN on most of the HF bands. However, at the time I was not aware of the "plasma effect" that I am now. When I heard the QRN, I "assumed" it to be from the PG&E high power lines that are pretty close to the house. By the time I put two & two together and figured out that the ugly noise was from this Samsung TV, it was already out of warranty. But, if I can query this group to see if anyone else has one of these TV's, I may be able to avert a lot of work ahead of time. Re: [Elecraft] [k3] Wayne/Lyle is it possible? S meter (Mike Rodgers)
I had not tried absolute mode. It is perfect. I use attn and no pre amp on lower bands. Nothing changes. Reducing rf gain as always will increase the floor of the reading up to 50 over, or thereabouts. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Adrian) Absolute mode keeps a true S reading the same regardless of preamp or Attenuator settings. I use it also in my K3. The OP is asking about RF gain, if you defeat RF gain then S will rise regardless of your absolute setting. -Original Message- Hi Mike, Yes - it is possible to do as you suggest - use the absolute S-Meter mode. For a long time I resisted switching to absolute mode for no good reason other than not wanting to deviate from a default setting. Because I usually keep RF gain at about the 1 o'clock position, for a long time I dithered along with S-Meter readings that were uncorrected for RF gain setting. A month or two ago I switched to absolute mode and have never looked back. Recommended. Someone recently suggested the absolute mode be made the default and I agree. This is done via the CONFIG: SMTR MD setting and is further described on page 51 of the current K3 Owner's Manual. 73 de Tyler, KC2LST - Is it possible to make the s meter unaffected by rf gain. Whatever the increase may be, Elecraft are very well managed and as such they will examine their business plan carefully and are well aware of the adverse effects any increase in the retail price can have to their business. Don, Great idea of using the lever to hold the set screw. I have tried it by hand with my Dremel and it is too difficult to hold. I will try your method. I also suspect the set screw as the issue. I have built a few kit paddles and whether it is screws or set screws, the best method is a nice round tip to avoid the problems. I will also try the spring change as I don't like any noise from my key and have purchased the latest ZNQRP paddle with ultrafine threads and the Begali travel lite. The KXPD3 with a finer thread rounded point set screw would be more than perfect. I don't know if set screws come any finer, if they did, I would re-tap mine for said improvement. I no longer have dropped dits or dahs, and I don't have the random delayed response problem which I had been experiencing. To accomplish the reshaping I disassembled the KXPD3, but left the screw in each paddle (extended several turns to provide better access, and secured with the set screw). That provided a handle and allowed me to keep it under control while using a fine white stone in my dental drill to do the shaping (I'm a retired dentist and still have an old belt driven handpiece on my workbench, but a Dremel mototool or something similar will work just as well) and I just rounded off the cupped ends. I didn't have to mess with the spring. I have taken a few closeup photos of the final result which I can post, but am not sure if the reflector will allow jpeg attachments (what say Wayne?) I also rotated the brass cylinders to move the wear marks (caused by the sharp cupped screw ends) away from the contact area. After several ragchew type qsos I'm confident that all of my previous KXPD3 issues have been solved. Hi folks, Well, after more than 2 months of operations with the KXPD3 and more than 350 QSOs, I still have trouble with that paddle. It occasionally misses either a dit or a dah. On these occasions, when I push the paddle, the contact don't produces anything. So far, the fixes that have read: - clean the black anodizing around the hole where the head of the thumb screw sits. I was told that it was done at the factory starting at a S/N earlier than mine, so I did not tried it. Maybe I should do it. - To 'file' the contacts screws.. Done this, but not much change... - Changing the spring: I did not do it, and wonder of it could be THE fix.. It is a bit strange that after all the complaints about the KXPD3, Elecraft has not fixed that once and for all...? About the spring, I would suggest that Elecraft provides us with a set of 3 to 4 new springs of different tensions so that we can test/choose the one that works best for each user. 73 de VE2PID KX3 S/N 190 -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KXPD3-again-tp7560531.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I learned many years ago it was always better to exceed customer expectations... there may be something to be learned here. I am not the boss, just some thoughts. You may also need to remove the device and then be sure to go into the system file and remove the improperly installed drivers first, BEFORE, installing the correct ones. Let me know if you need more help. The actual device name you are using would be helpful, perhaps you had it in an earlier email. Remember that at one time Unix dominated the workstation market in finance and other major industries. Sun, IBM and HP all had versions, and every Wall Street trader's desk had one of their workstations hooked up to an all-Unix network. When NT version 3 came out, it was buggy and the machines it ran on were wimpy, but the rush to ditch Unix and switch to NT swept the street within a year or two. Now none of the three once-dominant workstation companies are selling those products, and in fact Sun is defunct. Don's comments may sound unfair to a hard-core Unix person, but they are a valid reflection of the Unix experience as it affects many users, and as it obliterated what was once a flourishing component of the tech industry. Of course Unix will do the job; that isn't the issue. After all, various flavors of Unix underlie Mac OS, Android OS, your router, your microwave oven, your network provider, Google, Facebook, and so forth. The PR problem that it has had lies not in the power of its kernel or its networking or file-handling, but rather in the opacity that confounds the user who just wants to hook up his printer or download a file. An earlier post explaining why some cryptic gibberish was not, in fact, cryptic, illustrates this perfectly: "...666 is octal notation for granting permission." Don, I couldn't echo your comments more perfectly! I run it for fun but it is only an email handler and toy for me... besides I haven't the time. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- Let me give one OT "RANT", and then I will shut up on this subject. Suffice it to say that I have been extremely disappointing in all Linux distributions because of the lack of any organized support fort the users - the attitude seems to be "if you don't already understand the nuances of Linux, we will shame your questions and be very unhelpful. Check out the various forums and "FAQ" lists to verify this attitude. I have tried Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Debian in the recent past, and have found that unless you wish to spend a loot of time in "geekdom study", the terms are cryptic and not logical acronyms, and the user groups are useless unless one is already fluent in their brand of "geek-speak". Yes, I am computer fluent in Windows and peer-to-peer networking - I have worked with PCs since the Apple II days and the IBM PC DOS systems are no stranger to me, but the Linux groups are just not helpful at all to those who do not understand their peculiar cryptic language. In other words, there are no clear and concise instructions for Linux. The "Man pages" are supposedly the answer, but they offer geek-speak explanations for those who are not initiated and expert into the Linux brand of geekdom. I know, there are many who will disagree, but you will have to point me to a (non-on-line) manual that I can use as a reference book and is similar to those like "Mastering Windows XP Professional", Linux in any distro is just not going to "make the grade". For those who simply want to do email and surf the web, Ubuntu is great, as is Linux Mint - it has all the tools those users need, but for those who want to do such things as network a Linux workstation into a Windows peer to peer network, there is just not enough explicit information about how to set it up and make it work. Windows peer-to-peer is native, but with Linux, it is a complex "add-on" that I have not been able to master after several attempts with Samba configuration. I once thought Linux would be my road to salvation without buying Windows7 for 7 computers on my home network, but it just does not work consistently, so I guess I will have to spend the upgrade fees for Win7. So until Linux gives up its superior "I am geek and I want it to stay that way" attitude, it will never fly properly. Ubuntu and Mint have come a long way in making installation easier, but there is a long way to go in usability. Linux will also have to give up using "cute" names for applications to make sense to users - for instance, Photoshop has a relevant name for photo editing, but GIMP might mean something like "geeky image manipulating program" to Linux fans, but it has no obvioous meaning to the average user. Until Linux "gets real" instead of continuing to be "geeky", it will never fly - meaningful names are important - at least that is my opinion - I equate abstract naming to "geeky", and by saying "geeky" it means exclusionary, and not to be understood by the general user. And that is what is wrong with Linux. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/9/2012 11:38 PM, Dick Roth wrote: > FYI...to get to manage users and groups one needs to install > "gnome-system-tools". Re: [Elecraft] 6M on K3 (SAD)
I fired up the K3 for the recent Vhf contest. I have the preamp installed. I used the SmallIR at 3/4 wave with only 11 radials running 100 watts. I worked to east coast stations Q5 both ends. SWR was 3.2:1 as I need to add more radials. It was a pleasure. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of r miles Sent: Friday, June 22, 2012 11:57 AM To: elecraft Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Sad You'd love a K3 on 6m. I've not gotten the pre amp yet but I hear well with a modest short boom 5 el yagi. What I really love is the KPA500. Man that 500w on 6m is the difference. Not to the century mark yet just 89/88 but if 6m ever picks up this summer I hope to get closer. Been DXing for 50 yr.s & as a CW OP it's the best RX I have used & I've used every brand you could name and then some. Re: [Elecraft] K2 tuning issue
Or, just send the unit to Don, who is very good at fixing K2's. He goes way back to the beginning of the Elecraft startup K2 FT group and does repairs. If I needed mine repaired and couldn't fix it myself, I would send it to him. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Don Wilhelm Sent: Friday, June 15, 2012 4:42 PM To: Alan Slusher Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K2 tuning issue Alan, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I believe you are describing an encoder failure or an MCU failure at either the ENC A or ENC B inputs. It is difficult to say which it may be - the encoder is the single most expensive component in the K2 and the MCU (Control Board U6) is the second most expensive. Replacement/substitution is the best test to determine which of those two components is failing. If you can find another ham with a K2, you may be able to try using his front panel board on your K2 - if it works, then it is the encoder - if not, then the MCU is the most likely suspect. If you have not upgraded that K2. you may want to do so at this time, including the A to B mods (along with the other mods listed in the A to B instructions, add the Keying Waveshape Mod along with a new set of IF crystals and new firmware and your early K2 will perform just as well as a brand new kit. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/15/2012 4:59 PM, Alan Slusher wrote: > I have an older K2/10 (serial 868) which has worked very well for years. > Today I suddenly became aware of a problem: I can't change the frequency > using the tuning knob (yes, I did check the frequency lock). > The final frequency number on the display blinks (eg: the "4" in 14301.24) > (happened to have been listening on the 14.300 net) but no number changes > when the frequency knob is turned, and the radio's frequency does not change > either. > No problem with frequency change using direct frequency entry (the two band > buttons followed by the frequency numbers), > and the RIT works just fine. > I did the 456 reset before reading the instructions about saving the CAL FIL > numbers, with the result that I guess I will have to go back through that > procedure (I now have to punch in 14301 and use the RIT to move to 14.301.24 > to listen on 14.300, had been spot on before). > The K3 next to it and the Kenwood 430 below it continue to work just fine > off the same two antennas (a vertical and an 80m dipole - both through > tuners). > > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
