[Elecraft] KXPD2 Keyer

2023-11-05 Thread chuck gehring
I just received my KXPD2 Keyer. First impressions are that it is very nice.
I say that only because the KXPD1 that I got for my KX1 was a booger to
adjust. My question is about the extra parts that arrived with the KXPD2,
came with a loose spring and two Allen screws. Additionally the photos I
have seen of the KXPD2 appear to show locking set screws that I assume lock
in the adjustment screws, and on mine those holes are tapped for screws but
no screws are there. The instructions mention that there is a compound on
the adjustment screws the prevent the adjustment screws from walking out.
Are the loose screws and spring spares? Or are they something that I can
install?

Hello Everyone,

Recently I purchased two of the LED CW Indicator kits through the Eastern PA
QRP Club. I THINK - - but now I'm not sure - - that the kit is designed to
install in either/both my K2 and in my KX1 rigs.

In looking over the kit and my KX1, I can't see which button the LED
installs in, or if it's intended to be situated elsewhere. Is the idea is
to pick one of the three buttons and drill it? The K2 is no problem as I
received a drilled new button for it, but the KX1 has me guessing. Tom
Hammond's website has a couple of photos of the completed indicator in place
just prior to buttoning up the KX1, but nowhere is the finished installation
shown that I can see.

Maybe I misunderstood the intent of the kit. If it is designed to be used
in the KX1, can anyone steer me to where the indicator LED installs? Does
it peek out of a newly drilled chassis hole someplace? If so, where?

Any help would sure be appreciated.

Thanks es 73...

Thanks for everyone's comments. The Black Widow seems like a great deal
so I ordered one. I have collection of keys none of which I'm very
happy with. Most are on ebay right now and not getting much attention.
I hope to end up with a nice, light compact key with good action and
heavy one that stays put. If the Black Widow doesn't give me the feel I
want then I'm going to try a Kent or an Elecraft HexKey. I hate to
invest that much since I don't work that much cw anymore. I'm finding it
hard to make good contacts at my leisurely 15 wpm. And what is up with
these ops sending code with about a millisecond between their dots and
dashes? Is that a kind of I'll work you if you can copy me attitude? I
don't get these highly stylized sending patterns. Is it meant to
intentionally make it hard to copy?

[Elecraft] Polar Bear QRP Event

2008-01-18 Thread Chuck Gehring
The Polar Bear Moonlight Madness Event will be taking place tomorrow 19
January, 2008. QRP operating frequencies 20, 30, 40 and 80 meters between
1700-2300 UTC. Our fingers may be a little cold so “BEAR” with us if our
replies are a little slow.

Several Polar Bear QRP Operators will be taking to the field under the frosty
full moon to capture a few QSO’s.

We polar bears just love operating in the great outdoors. All PBMMEs are held
close to full moons during the months of October, November, December, January,
February and March. That's right - when it's cold!

As a small incentive for folks to make QSO’s with the Polar Bears, A limited
edition Polar Bear Backpacking Alcohol Stove, wind screen and fuel bottle will
be given away to the operator who makes the most QSO’s with the Polar Bears. A
look at the stove and a list of a few of the operators is on the web page.

http://www.polarbearqrp.org/PBMME01-08.html

To apply for the prize you must send in a copy of your log. (NOTE: Logs should
reflect: Time of QSO in UTC, Freq, and Polar Bear Number) Send a copy of your
log via email in ASCII format to K2CG (at sign) arrl.net All logs must be
received by 25 January 2008.

This is not meant to be a contest so please avoid the hit and run QSO’s. If
you tag us on 30 meters then the hope is that you will chat for a little before
moving on.

Polar Bears should be identifying themselves by calling “CQ CQ PBMM DE...”

Thanks and 72 K2CG

[Elecraft] K2 KIO2 Problem.

2006-09-23 Thread Chuck Gehring
K2 KIO2 Problem.

A few days ago we had a power fluctuation in our neighborhood. The surge
protector and Battery Backup UPS did not help. The Power surge took out my
computer hard drive, serial interface card and it would appear had some
affect on my KIO2.

The KIO2 still works with my KAT-100 and KPA 100 Change Bands and Tune, but
I cannot make any connection with the computer serial interface card. I
have run the Serial interface Test several times. Of course I replaced the
serial card and hard drive, I even switched computers, NO JOY.

I have checked all of the voltages on the KIO2 interface. The voltages on
the J2, Q1, U2 all match the manual. The diodes (D1, D2 and D3) seem okay
but I don't get an exact match with the manual. The voltages on the U1 and
J1 don't match the trouble shooting instructions;

U1-113.6 VDC

U1-20 VDC

U1-30 VDC

U1-40 VDC

U1-50VDC

U1-60VDC

U1-70VDC

U1-89VDC

U1-90VDC

U1-10 0VDC

U1-11 4.9 VDC

U1-12 5 VDC

U1-13 4.9 VDC

U1-14 0VDC

U1-15 5 VDC

U1-16 5VDC

J1-1 0VDC

J1-2 -6 VDC

J1-3 0VDC

J1-4 OVDC

J1-5 0VDC

J1-6 5.5 VDC

J1-7 0VDC

J1-8 14VDC

J1-9 8VDC

Comments, suggestions would be appreciated

P.S. I really feel so lucky to have an Elecraft K2. A friend of mine has a
IC-756PROIII, He got hit with a voltage spike last month and after several
hundred dollars for replacement boards he still has to send his entire rig
back the service center. I am very close to talking him in to buying a K2.
At least that way he will have a Back-up rig for his K2 when the Icom gets

It is my understanding the the Power transistors in the KPA-100 (2SC2879) are

the KPA-100 to loaf along fine at 100 watts CW, 30 wpm for two minutes. I have
seen a few posts where folks have added additional fans. The fan is
temperature controlled it will turn on high when the heat sink temp goes above
40 degrees C and turn off two minutes after the temp goes below 37 degrees C.
For me, I like it when the fan turns on, it is letting me know that my KPA-100

RE: [Elecraft] KX1 Tricks

2006-05-08 Thread Chuck Gehring
Drew,
Setting up a vertical in Tent City can be a real pain because the radials
and keeping the troops from tripping over everything. My recommendation
would be to setup a large fiberglass pole like the 31' Jackite between the
tents (between the tents were they have the A/C units setup) and use a
doublet antenna like KQ6XA Bonnie Crystal's Mini-Bac as an Inverted Vee to
the tops of the tents, or get two Jackite poles and set it up as a Doublet.
I would use Gorilla tape around the sections of the fiberglass poles for a
more permanent installation. Finally get an Plano Jumbo Airliner Case to
carry and ship the wires and fiberglass poles. With the Plano case you
don't have to worry about them putting your stuff on a pallet when you
return CONUS, or when you check it as luggage on the airlines.

Subject: [Elecraft] KX1 Tricks

Greetings,

I'm one of the lurkers who follow this list, but haven't had anything to
contribute. I am currently 1/2 way through my one year deployment to Kuwait
and put together a KX1 here in my billeting to try to make a DXpedition out
of the rest of my time here. I have a big plastic tote to use as my
footlocker and spread a towel on it to make a work surface. The kit went
together fine: my challenges have been elsewhere. I've got plenty of wire
with which to make an antenna, but the tents are only 12' at the peak, there
are no trees. Vertical support is an obstacle. I found a PAC 12 vertical
second-hand on one of the trader pages. For a guy that enjoys stringing
wire, a store-bought antenna is a bitter pill to swallow. I do like the
design, though. I'm eager to transmit through it.
Reciprocal licensing is a challenge, too. The ministry only accepts the form
filled in Arabic, and it has to be hand-carried. I am submitting the
application tomorrow, so hopefully that will go smoothly.
I am taking 2 weeks of leave soon. My wife and I will meet in Scotland. I am
looking forward to operating there where I don't have the licensing hoops to
jump through.

For people looking for a wallet in which to carry your KX1: a military
accessory company called Spec.-Ops. makes a Mini Cargo Pocket Organizer that
fits the KX1 like a glove. It is a heavy-duty nylon that is very durable.
You do have to take the paddle off the radio, though. The organizer is found
at: http://www.specopsbrand.com/main.html

Re: [Elecraft] KAF2 or KDSP2 for K2

2006-04-06 Thread Chuck Gehring
FWIW,
I operate CW only and have the KAF2 and the KDSP2 installed in my K2. For the
most part I find that I only need the XFIL set to FL2 at 500Hz. However there
are times when the bands are crowded or noisy and I am trying to work a weak
signal. Then I find that the KDSP2 with the Denoiser and CW Filter Gain
adjusted for 12db gain to be very helpful in picking up the weak stations. I
really like being able to tweak and adjust the KDSP2 filters with its very
large selection of settings and adjustments.

[Elecraft] S meter Settings on the KX1

2006-04-02 Thread Chuck Gehring
Are the range for the High and Low S-meter on the KX1 with Firmware Rev.
1.02, now Low 40-99, and High 2-7 ? The manual says Low 30-99, High 2-6.
I was just triple checking all of my previous settings on my KX1 since I
installed the new firmware and my S-meter settings are now slightly
different. Previously L-68, H-4, now they are L-70, H-3. Of course I used
my XG-2 for my S9 signal source.

[Elecraft] T1 ATU Battery storage tip

2006-03-29 Thread Chuck Gehring
This last weekend I finished construction on my T1 auto-tuner. The manual
recommends that for transport that you reverse the battery in the storage
compartment. I tried that and was not real comfortable with hearing the
battery flop around as I walked around with the T1 in my fanny pack. I have
inserted a small strip 1 of magnetic tape with an adhesive backing into the
battery compartment. So far it does not seem to have any adverse effect on the
T1's performance. The magnetic tape is the type you can find in small rolls at
any hobby or craft shop. For what it is worth I figured I would pass on the
tip.

Do you have a metal screw holding the final amplifier mounting hardware
together, Chuck?

If you put a metal screw in the final amp without the heat sink, you're
shorting the B+ to ground!

Right off hand that's all I can think of at this point. All you've done is
remove the KXB30 module and reconfigure the receiver input circuit. That
doesn't involve any direct connections to the B+ circuitry.

If it's not the 'screw in the final amplifier' bit (which probably half of
the KX1 owners have done with the unit open, including me!) I'd look very
closely for a solder bridge somewhere around the components you just
replaced or the transformer you added.

[Elecraft] FS FT-100 Tuning Knob and Code Quick CW training program

FT-100 tuning knob $12
Code Quick CW Training program $10

I have an Yaesu FT-100 tuning knob that I used on my K2. It looked good and
worked great, however I longed for the stock Elecraft look so I installed
the Finger Dimple on my K2 knob and I am very pleased with the results. So
if someone has been looking for a very nice tuning knob for their K2 the
FT-100 knob is available for $12 including shipping in the US.

I also have a complete set of Code Quick tapes (including the manual and
cards). Code Quick may not be the preferred training method to some, but it
made learning code fun and got me up and on the air so I would like to see
them in continued service. Code Quick tapes $10 in the US.

Jeff,
I have mine already configured and ready to go. I used a Radio Shack Stereo

that I modified in accordance with the K2 manual page 95 figure 8-1 and a
short pice of 1/8 stereo cable (about 6) RS42-2387. I plugged the straight
key into the modified stereo jack and the 6 extension with the stereo plug
into the other Y cable connection. With this set up I can use either may
paddle or straight key all the time any time?

I hope this helps

[Elecraft] K2 Anomaly

2005-11-28 Thread Chuck Gehring
K2 Anomaly

I have experienced an anomaly; at least I think it is an anomaly on my K2.

When I am rotating the VFO knob the frequency display will disappear very
briefly and be replaced by my power output setting, then change back just a
quickly to the frequency display.

I have not been able to duplicate it with any degree of regularity; it just
happens and goes back to normal. The rate of change on the VFO knob does
not seem to determine when this occurs.

It does not seem to have any effect on performance. Has anyone else
experienced this, can anyone offer an explanation?

Subject: [Elecraft] Accurate QRP Wattmeters?

Hello List,
I've posted my question on QRP-L and here as well- since I will be building
a KX-1.
I am looking for good ways to measure power output from my KX-1 while I am
building it.
What first came to mind was to set up my Tek 492 analyzer on a 2 dB scale
and then use
a 30 or 40 watt (high power) attenuator to measure CW power. I have several
Bird 43's
but have never seen Bird slugs for QRP LF, MF or HF. I think a competing
company may
have a through wattmeter with HF but I forget the lowest scale of that one.
I have read
the E-Ham reviews for the Oak Hills QRP wattmeter- 300 Khz to 54 MHz and
100mW, 1W and 10W
scales- still thinking over the reviews.

Comments on the accuracy of using the Tek 492 method, and on other accurate
wattmeter options?

[Elecraft] KPA 100 Resistance Checks

2005-02-05 Thread Chuck Gehring
I am building the KPA 100. I have just tried the resistance measurements on
page 41 of the Alignment and Installation. The resistance measurements for
the Q1 and Q2 collectors will flash 11 or 12K ohms then jump down to -6.5K
ohms and then count up to -3.5K and then stabilize. When I first checked
the J3 red terminal it responded normally in about 20 seconds showing
greater than 10 K ohms. Now even that is giving me inconsistent readings.
The remainder of the readings in that table for the KPA 100 test points are
okay. I saw a similar post in the archives from Dec 2004 but the thread
ended without a response.

Comments Recommendations would be appreciated

[Elecraft] K2 4467 on the Air

2005-01-23 Thread Chuck Gehring
Well we made it, K2 #4467 is finally on the air. Our first CQ was answered

I never did get a perfect match between the BFO and the VFO following N6KR

I could manage was 220 Hz difference measuring between TP1 and TP2. But I
only ran the procedure once and may try it again later. I hope I didn't
overheat the crystal applying the ground to the case.

During the Final Alignment I used the Elecraft N-Gen as a signal source. It
was difficult to find a peak during the Receiver Pre-Alignment on 3750
adjusting L3 and L4. There was a peak but very flat and wide.

Finding the Peak on 17 meters during the Pre-Alignment, never happened using
C32 and C34. I finally left them at the mid range and got a peak during the
Transmitter Alignment.

I also have the QSK Thump on the speaker and headset that I have read about
on the Archives. It is a little different from my Ten Tec rig but I'll
manage.

I really want to extend my whole hearted Thanks to the entire crew at
Elecraft, super rig and great instructions. All of my parts were there,
Thanks Christine and Kim, Super Job. My Thanks to Gary for dealing with all
the questions. Finally thanks to you guys on the Elecraft Reflector for the
recommendations and reassurance that I was not the only one who did
something stupid, by installing a diode in backwards. Your secret is safe
with me guys.

[Elecraft] 40 Meter Transmitter Alignment, Inconsistent Readings

2005-01-22 Thread Chuck Gehring
I am trying the 40 Meter Transmitter Alignment procedure.
Adjusting the L1 and L2 for a maximum of 2.0 watts did not seem to be a
problem. With the VFO set to 7100 and power setting set for 2.0 watts.
The initial indication was about 3.0 watts at 1.5 amps. I adjusted the L1
and L2 until I get a reading of 1.9 watts with the power set for 2.0 watts
with 1.26 amps indicated.
I changed the power setting to 5.0 watts and it indicates 6.9 watts with 1.8
amps.
I increased to 10 watts to get a reading of 12 watts with 2.0 amps.
Then I decreased the power setting back to 2.0 watts without changing
anything except the power setting and press and hold the TUNE button it
reads 2.5 watts. Increasing and decreasing the power setting up then down
between 2 to 5 Watts I get 1.9 to 2.6 watts with the setting set for 2.0
watts.
The power meter on my dummy load pretty much reflects the same power out as
indicated on the internal power meter.

Am I making a mountain out of a mole hill here or is something wrong.

[Elecraft] KDSP2 Capacitor Installation

2005-01-21 Thread Chuck Gehring
I need some recommendations. The KDSP2 instructions state to install C5,
C8,C3, and C4 with the capacitor flush to tje PCB with the exposed leads not
more than 1/32 (1mm) above the PCB. Could someone please tell me how they
accomplished this task. The best I can mamage without cracking the ceramic
around the leads is 2/32 Pictures would be great.

[Elecraft] Keying on Power Up

2005-01-16 Thread Chuck Gehring
I just finished up Assembly Part II, getting ready to start Alignment and
Test Part III. When I turn on my K2 the display shows Elecraft and then
flashes between PO 1 and SPD 15. NO INFO messages, the dummy load gets
warm. No Smoke so I guess I can count my blessings. I will be searching
the reflector archives and double checking for shorts again, but I am afraid
that I am overlooking the same spot each time.

Subject: [Elecraft] Noise-reducing cans

Hi, all concerned:

I have tinnitus and some hearing loss at age 61, and have found the
PlaneQuiet NC-5 cans helpful in the shack and in the mfg shop where I'm a
tech. They're light, and they reduce the racket from HVAC, refrigerators,
freezers, amp blowers, computer blowers, and so on.

http:www.thetravelinsider.info/roadwarriorcontent'planequietnc6headphones.ht
m

Some plans fell through, and I have 4 NC-5 sets which were new last month,
in original boxes, with instructions, warranty cards, carrying pouch, and AA

cell. These are the ones over which Bose apparently threatened legal action

over patent infringements of some sort.

The supplier gets $75 a set singly; if you're interested at $60 a set
shipped domestically, pls email me, [EMAIL PROTECTED] off-reflector.

[Elecraft] Testing BL1 mini module

2004-11-26 Thread Chuck Gehring
I finished assembling a BL1 BALUN Module and decided to test it with my 259
Antenna Analyzer.
The testing procedure calls for you to connect a pair of 100 ohm resistors
in series between the two 200 ohm terminals, then test the SWR with a jumper
connected to the input shield and to three different locations on the
resistors. The instructions state that the SWR should be low when the
jumper is connected between the input shield and the junction between the
two resistors. Then it should show poor SWR when the jumper is connected
between the input shield and either one of the BALUN output terminals. My
tests showed no difference between any of the three connections. I have
double and triple checked my soldering connections on the BL1. It is not a
complicated module to assemble.
Has anyone else tested the BL1 with a 259?
Is the BALUN safe to use or should I just stay away from testing equipment
without adult supervision?

[Elecraft] KXer for the KX1

2004-09-30 Thread Chuck Gehring
I just received the perfect accessory for my KX1 a new iambic paddle
designed and built by Richard Meiss WB8LPU. Now I love my KX1 and the
KXPD1 is a nice paddle, but I need to have that tactile feel of a regular
paddle.

The KXer uses the existing mounting connections connecting directly to the
KX-1, or you can use it in the stand-alone mode with a brass tripod base.
The paddle itself is the iambic type, with the tension provided by opposed
magnets mounted on the inside of the paddle arms. It has the feel of a
bigger paddle – crisp action, definite stops at the end of the travel, and
no drag while the paddle is moving. If you have a KX1 then you really
need to check this paddle out. I believe I have the first production model
of the KXer, and I could not be happier. The Form, Fit, Function, and Finish
are Fantastic.

I have no connection to Richard Meiss, other than the fact that I am one
very happy and excited customer.

Check out the August 2004 Bacon Bits newsletter for more information and
pictures.

RE: [Elecraft] KX1 Receiver Drain

2004-06-24 Thread Chuck Gehring
God I hope not. I know the manual says 35ma in Receive, 40ma max w/

illuminated, regardless of wether the headphones are plugged in or not.

the range of considerable high, or just in the range of average.
I do have a fairly high general noise level here :/

Thanks in advance

RE: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX1 mini-log attaches to back cover

2004-06-14 Thread Chuck Gehring
Another Tip you may or may not find useful. Laminate your logs with clear
plastic shelving paper. You can then write on it with pencil, transfer your
log, erase and use them over.

Subject: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX1 mini-log attaches to back cover

When the KX1 is used hand-held, it's difficult to log, since you need
three hands (one each for the KX1, log, and pen). To simplify this,
we've created a loose-leaf mini-log that attaches to the back of the
radio via the thumbscrews. When operating hand-held, you simply flip
the rig over and log the QSO. Even when not operating hand-held, the
log sheets can be stored in this location for ready access. They're
easy to get off because of the two U-shaped channels for attachment at
the thumbscrews. In our tests, the log worked well even with a solder
lug attached at one thumb screw (for a trailing ground wire).

You'll find a .pdf file for the mini-log, and a photo showing the log
sheets in use, at:

   http://www.elecraft.com/KX1/KX1.htm

Feel free to print out as many sheets as you'd like for your own use.
We suggest heavy card stock, 65 pound or higher (about the weight of
business card paper). Trim out the sheets carefully using an X-acto
knife or other sharp tool. You can stack quite a few sheets under the
thumb screws -- certainly enough for a typical outing. You could also
cut out a piece of transparency stock or Vellum to protect the paper
sheets during transport. This top sheet should be moved to the bottom
of the stack during operation.

We didn't include columns for mode or power output level. This info
could be noted in the blank area at the right of the mini-log, since
it's likely to be the same for a group of QSOs.

Be sure to write small!

[Elecraft] KX1# 641 Finally on the Air but need help with KXAT1 Alignment and Test Help

2004-06-06 Thread Chuck Gehring
KXAT1 Alignment and Test Help

I am not sure what I am suppose to see or do in the following steps:

Select 40 meters using KX1 BAND Switch (Done, I understand)
Connect a 50-ohm Dummy Load (Done, I understand)
Set the “ATU” parameter to “CAL” using the menu, (I think I am there.
Pressed Menu, rotated the VFO knob to “ATU”, then press and hold MENU,
rotate VFO knob to “CAL”.)

I can hear the relays click when I go between “CAL” and “TUN”, in the ATU
menu when I rotate the VFO knob.

Is that how I select or bypass the ATU?

I remained in the “ATU” “CAL” position while I adjusted the R1 and R2 as per
the KXAT1 Manual Errata sheet Rev A-2. (The diagram was helpful, Thanks)

Then I exited the ATU menu with the ATU still left in “CAL”, set up my DMM
connected to a KX1 standoff and the “REFL” test point on the KXAT1 board.

I entered the “TUNE” mode by pressing “MENU” and “BAND” at the same time. I
then adjusted C9 for a null (0.7vdc) monitoring the DMM using the 2-3 VDC
scale.

I repeated the process using the DMM’s 200-milli vdc scale

I went back to the ATU menu and changed it back to TUN to support normal
operations.

My question really is, should I have left the ATU in the CAL position and
exited to enter the ”TUNE” mode?

I measured the power out from the KX1 using the DL1 Dummy load test points.
It shows a very solid 4 watts.

I also installed the KXB30 meter module. During the alignment process I got
a very positive peak from the 30A cap, but I really didn’t see much of a
response from the 30B.
