Re: [Elecraft] Modern battery for K2
Hi Sverre, I am still using this battery external to the K2. It is very convenient as it just sits under the rig and easily connects to the K2 power jack with the attached cable provided, no mods required. Yes the switch needs to be ON both for charging and when in use as a supply for the K2, and yes the LED is ON in this state so will no doubt in time discharge the battery. As it seems very convenient like this I decided to leave the battery external. I have now purchesed another Na I find them to be excellent and much better than the heavier limited Ah SLA batteries. 73, Deni F5VJC On 7 August 2013 16:22, Sverre Holm (LA3ZA) [via Elecraft] ml-node+s365791n7577478...@n2.nabble.com wrote: I wonder what resulted from this. Re: [Elecraft] Anderson Power Poles?
This is Ham radio today? LEARN, how to terminate cables...Coax, DC or whatever, and just do it. Do it right. There are many step by step tutorials and pics, even videos on how to do it right. Lots of problems will just go away! Hard to believe any guys using Elecraft equipment have problems with such basic connectors. Do a Google search and you'll find all the info to do it right. Maybe we should we start another thread about Knobs now? 73, Deni F5VJC That's why there is a CRIMP tool, although solder will hold well enough i suppose, maybe, but I wouldn't trust it . I crimp them, and THEN flow solder into them. You (anyone) could sit there and wiggle them enough to break the wires. I don't wiggle or dodge and burn my DC connectors all that often. But you can do that to connector with a strain relief just as well. Just don't trip over them -- anything can be ripped out and broken. I have this vision of hams sitting in a long winded QSO or calling CW DX over and over and over ... running out of productive things to do, fiddling with their PP's to see if they can make them break. Of course you can break them. I have many 12VDC circuits on power poles. I have never had a failure, never had wires break, and never plugged 3000VDC into the back of my K3 (but I don't have 3Kv on power poles either). Ok -- so the power lead to my K3 is #8 copper and short (by design) and pulls out when I slide the radio too far forward on the desk. [Elecraft] K3 NR
I have never been too fond of DSP NR in any rig but this latest from Elecraft really is impressive. NR is absolutely amazing on CW and very very good on SSB. If you have any doubts just try it. Re: [Elecraft] K3 NB/NR Noise Blanker/ Noise reduction
Yes you're right Steve! After reading your comments below, I have now set my AGC THR high and SLP low, this REALLY does improve the NR function on both CW and SSB. Someone said it makes CW mushy. I say it does just exactly the opposite. It sharpens the AF response and enhances CW, especially weak signals that are down at the noise floor. Have had a lot of rigs, the IC-7800's NR is pretty good too. The PRO series NR is terrible. Keep in mind I'm talking about CW here. Yes let's not get this confused... the K3 NB (Noise Blanker) does a great job with impulse noise from my local electric fence QRM. If your email system allows you to sort your inbound emails, it can really make life much simpler. I use Outlook Express and/or Windows Mail (the Vista version of Outlook Express), which allows me to set up message rules that automatically direct various emails to various separate folders. There are several ways to sort your messages, so it's pretty flexible. I simply use the subject line by having the system divert all messages with the Elecraft designation go to a separate folder. That captures all messages coming from the Elecraft reflector. I get 40 to 50 messages a day from the Elecraft reflector (sometimes a lot more), and I can usually dispose of them fairly quickly by then just perusing the subject line for each. My delete key gets a lot of work, but it goes pretty fast. The problem I find with getting digests is that when you want to respond to a certain message, it becomes a lot more complicated, since not all digests provide a clear method for responding to just that one message you are interested in responding to. QTH.net is one of those that makes this difficult. Of course, it would be exponentially more helpful if folks would pay more attention to the subject line, but that's a battle that seems to be more like Don Quixote at the Windmill! Anyway, if you aren't using a method like the one I describe, you might consider at least trying it. The messages are all there in my email until I delete them, so I can respond to any of them - Reply goes to the poster while Reply All will send it to the poster and the Elecraft list - I can edit the recipients if that is desired. Re: [Elecraft] Lightness of the K3
Yes, but beware, there seems to be various flavours of this rubber mesh material. I used a black material which has now permanently left it's mesh fingerprint on top of a rather expensive rig. Impossible to remove the fingerprint! I'm now very wary of using this stuff and wouldn't dream of letting it near my K3, well maybe underneath is OK. But do not... put certain brands of this rubbery mesh on top of a surface you really care about, without testing it out! The moment I saw this, as when I first read about the K2 back in 1999, I knew this was one radio I just had to have. From this side of the Atlantic, at $2 / £1 exchange rate, it looks very good value indeed. I'm hoping that the modular kit will qualify for import duty exemtion as well. I have decided to get my order in before one of the UK dealers asks for exclusive UK distribution rights and we all end up having to pay twice the price. [Elecraft] Static rain ?
I have recently been plagued by rain static on a new vertical antenna, this is a 42 foot vertical fed at the base through an SG230 auto tuner, and used on all bands. It seems I need a static bleed of some sort, a choke or resistor. What is the best component to use in an outdoor environment? My junk box RF chokes look rather puny for this application, the typical small 2.5mH RF choke. Would a physically large, say 1 Meg resistor be more suitable ? I thought the auto ATU would in itself provide a static bleed path, but apparently not. Is the K2 prone to front end damage due to this static charge? I do not have the back to back diodes fitted (to prevent huge signal overload) Any thoughts, how have you solved this? 73, Deni F5VJC -- 73, Deni F5VJC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Static rain ?
Very interesting Geoff, thanks for the comments. I've deliberately not installed those front end diodes in my K2. As to the rain static, we've had very severe rainstorms in France as I believe you too have experienced in the UK and this problem with rain static I have never heard so bad, however this is a relatively new antenna installation for me. The vertical element is constructed from a 42' length of coax using the braid as the radiator to provide a fat wire, this radiator is suspended inside a Spiderbeam fiberglass pole so is in no way in direct contact with the rain. I used to use a butternut vertical (exposed aluminium vertical radiator) and didn't notice rain static quite like this. Yes my feeling is the resistor bleed would be better than the choke for the reasons you mention, still, I've just been out and measured the resistance from the antenna to ground and of course it reads zero Ohms, through the ATU I imagine so I don't quite see why I need a further static bleed path, but I'll try it anyway. Good to hear your K2 is a survivor, I've not had that horror, something I dread, however at the base of my antenna is a spark gap arrestor and then the auto ATU so...fingers crossed. 73, Deni F5VJC Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy wrote: Deni, My suggestion is that you use a resistor and not a choke. A choke at some frequencies will become a series resonant L-C 'tuned' circuit, and it is quite possible that the choke will resonate in or close to one of the bands that you use. If that is the case you will loose transmitter power heating up the choke, likewise the strength of received signals reaching the receiver can be reduced. For static bleeds I usually use 100k 2w carbon resistors, the old fashioned type not carbon film, because the resistors *must* be non-inductive types. My K2 survived a lightning strike to my 40m beam, but I think that the combination of a coax spark gap out in the garden and an underground coax feeder with 'surge loops' took out much of the sting. Back to back diodes for protection against overload can create all sorts of intermodulation problems if the diodes start to conduct, and for those of us in Europe who share 40m with BC stations and using receivers which cannot cope, overload is a problem but there are solutions. Please contact me off list if you are interested. 73, Geoff GM4ESD - Original Message - From: Deni [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Saturday, December 09, 2006 9:52 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Static rain ? Re: [Elecraft] CW Filter FT817 ??
The FT-817 was designed for the Japanese fourth class license ham market and was only incidentally offered to the US market. [Elecraft] K2 Toroids Latest?
Hi Vic and all. I have kept my K2 (1188) up to date with all the A/B mods, however at times I see references such as the one below about T7 where a toroid may have been changed from the original windings to a revised spec. Are these documented anywhere, which toroids are now different and why? Thanks, 73, Deni F5VJC / GM3SKN K21188 = It looks fine, although I would move the two wider filters a bit to the right. There looks like about 6-8 db difference in attenuation between the widest and narrowest filters, which is probably on the high side of normal (although this tends to vary). I see about 4 db on mine, which is #709 but has had the crystals replaced and T7 rewound to current spec. I would be interested in knowing how much difference in attenuation others are seeing. I know that K1JD has an ANCIENT K2 (field test vintage) which has zero db difference! -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] CW Learning Techniques
Hello Martin and all, great thread, enjoying reading the responses. I found having been stuck at 20 WPM head copy for some time that if I increased the sending speed above what I considered my normal reliable receive speed I could actually read longer words much easier and with less stress than before. What a pleasant surprise! I could actually copy code much faster than I thought. I think you will start hearing the longer more difficult words in larger chunks and eventually hearing and decoding long whole words and wondering how did I do that, very cool. So don't impose an artificial lower limit on yourself but regularly listen to short code sessions at higher speed than you consider normal for yourself I now do this at speeds up to 40WPM for practice, you may find a sweet spot speed that suits you and it begins to click. Above 20WPM code actually sounds better to me and I find I can headcopy conversational CW easier.
