Yes, I'd have one.. I miss the scope on the front of my 756pro2. Well, I
don't actually as it sits next to the K3. :-) but I sure would love a larger

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Audio routing question

2010-07-06 Thread GD0TEP
Yes... this is something I'd like to see as well

In the RSGB/IARU 50mhz annual contest, the station here consists of 4 large
antenna systems and 4 receivers. It would be beneficial to me if I was able
to drop that down to 2 K3's!

Hi Don,

Imagine a system with good isolation between antennae such as you can
achieve with long yagi's at VHF/UHF. In my left ear I have the main RX with
stations from the UK, in my right ear I have the sub RX and stations from
Europe. I have a QRM from another G in my left ear when I am called by a
weak station from Europe which I hear in my right ear. As the antennae have
nice patterns I can barley hear the QRM from the G on the antenna pointing
at Europe. Now I want to mute or attenuate the audio from the main RX and
listen to the audio from the sub RX in both ears. I know this will not be
diversity any more but I'd quite like the filter controls to continue to
affect both receivers without having to press BSET. After I have worked the
station I need to return to diversity mode listening to both receivers
again.

Diversity mode almost does what I want with both receivers locked together,
I just need to be able to select which audio I listen to at a given time. I
can easily make up a box to switch the audio but I would have thought that
what I want to do is not that uncommon.

Hope this makes more sense.

I do not understand why one would want to listen to only the subRX

Can you explain further, maybe there is something I am missing.

Re: [Elecraft] 6M CW

2010-07-06 Thread GD0TEP
This thread has been quite interesting

I respect the station that can sit and rag chew on CW, I've tried it on one
of the HF bands, and found it very demanding on the brain.

On 6m... If the band was open with more than one hop of SpE, I'll be chasing
new grid squares, or DXCC countries. I do it on single hop SpE as well, but
with more than one hop available, some real DX might also be available..

I think a lot of 'DXers' on 6m would be upset to hear a W7 on the band and
not be able to have a quick QSO... I sure would be...

That doesn't mean people can't be polite... I've heard and worked what I
consider to be good DX (more than one hop SpE) and the DX station insisted
on names as well as report... And, as he had a pile up, that's what he got
with every QSO... now that's not unfair, it's just what the 'DX' wanted.

In the large RSGB/IARU contest, even with the band going 'ding dong' I
always try to pass over GM or GA on each QSO... does this slow the rate
down...? maybe has it damaged to score? I don't think so, and we've won
the contest 10 times in the last 13 years...

Yesterdays DX from here was C56E, I've a short video here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrCvY4OjZJ4

At the end of the day, it's a hobby... have fun, do what you enjoy... but
remember the rest of us out there... :-)

Heck I guess I'll stop doing that... I've just kinda learned from listening
to the bands. I'm finally getting my speed up fast enough that actually
carrying on a QSO is possible. At 8WPM your RST, Name, QTH, RIG and ANT is
a 30 to 40 minute conversation. ;) However at 13WPM I've been able to
actually have conversations with people about the K3 find out that they've
recently retired and what they used to do and well all sorts of fun stuff...
(I'm referring to a 40 minute conversation that I had on 40 last night...)

Then heck I ran into a guy the other day who was only about 20 minutes bike
ride from here. We ended up having a 1.6 hour or so QSO. Both of our
brains were going to mush by the end as we were both working hard for it but
hey its fun!

I'm by no means an old salt at the age of 29 but I do try to be polite and
do find it fun to get into the longer QSO's via CW. I often find that SSB
bores me for casual operating but I do find SSB interesting for contests.

But anyway just wanted to let you know that your post has hit home with
someone and I'll start sending my call a few times when answering a CQ... I
usually figure that I want to try and get in there quick before their auto
repeat kicks in Then if they need a fill we can always take care of
that later. Guess I've been being rude all this time and had no idea.

Sorry...

Hi again Joe,

I'm using XP here. I've checked what you've suggested and found that it is
indeed a sound card issue. The output from the sound card also has the mic
listed as an option, when this I muted the feedback is gone. There's still
an issue with the sound blaster software taking control of the properties
and turning it back on, but I'll chase this up on the WSJT reflector.

Which operating system?

Most soundcards will default to monitoring on the line input.
If you're using Vista or Windows 7, open the Audigy 2 ZS Speakers.
Select the levels tab and make sure all of the devices below the line (all
of the inputs) are muted. In Windows XP, I think you need to open the
Advanced features and turn off monitor while recording (or select do
not monitor while recording) or something similar.

Real time chat with other like minded people, plus separate web pages for

you'd find it useful. It's great as FS/W6JKV is currently working into EU

[Elecraft] K3 with Expert 1K-FA, RS232 connections question?

2010-06-27 Thread GD0TEP
Hello to the group again,

I want to connect my K3 to my 1K-FA amplifier, the amplifier manual isn't to
clear (to me anyway) on the connections that need to be used.

On the amplifier 15pin plug, I use pins 1, 9 14, yes it's that simple.

On the K3 RS232 I connect the amplifier pin 1 to K3 pin 3 (I think, I may
have these two crossed)
On the K3 RS232 I connect the amplifier pin 9 to K3 pin 2 (I think, I may
have these two crossed)

And

On the K3 RS232 I connect the amplifier pin 9 to K3 pin 5 as ground

Within the K3 RS232 I need to link the RST and CTS together, well RTS is pin
7 on the K3, but what pin is the CTS

Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the info, I downloaded the program and carried out the

Here's the results I get, the power indicated is taken from the KW. I start
out at 50w, then increase the power heading towards 100w:

160m - 97w radio trips, next test found fine adjustment of front control
made the 100w
80m - 100w Appears OK
40m - 100w Appears OK
30m - 100w Appears OK
20m - radio tripped off, next test found that all I could get is 85w before
it would trip again.
17m - 94w radio trips off, repeated attempts results in the radio tripping
off @ 85w
15m - 95w radio trips off, repeated attempts results in the radio tripping
off @ 94w
12m - 90w radio trips off, repeated attempts results in the radio tripping
off @ 88w
10m - 100w

Andy,

I would first do the wattmeter calibration as indicated in the manual.
You can make it match your Bird if that is what you trust.
After that use K3 Utility to do the 5 and 50 watt (and 1 mW if you have the
KXV3). Using the K3 Utility to do the TX Gain calibration is a snap, you
just sit back and watch it change bands and 'do its thing'.

Re-check your conditions after those steps.

I must be missing something, or perhaps not understand what I'm

around 85w to 90w the power out appears to fold back and the radio
switches itself off.

There doesn't seem to be any link to what band is causing the problem,

Andy,

As Roger suggested, check your power supply - I did not initially realize
that the K3 trips off, I had previously thought that it had reached some
maximum power that it would not go above. Check the power cable connections
to be certain they are tight both inside and outside the power supply
enclosure.
If that is not the problem --
Measure the current drawn just below just below the point where the K3 trips
off and include that information in an email to k3supp...@elecraft.com

 Hi Andy

I had the same problem originally. It was the power supply current
limiting! Supposedly, a 25 amp supply, it would start limiting at
about 18-20 amps. This dropped the voltage which would cause the radio
 to shut itself off.

[Elecraft] PA set up issues

2010-06-25 Thread GD0TEP
Hi to the group,

I've just installed my KPA3 100w upgrade into my factory built K3.

I've followed the calibration procedure starting out with 5w per band, and
then moved to 50w per band, as per instructions.

I must be missing something, or perhaps not understand what I'm reading as
once I've completed the calibration, some of the HF bands are fine with 100w
out, other bands seem to upset the radio as follows: When using the radio
into a 200w 50 ohm load, and measuring power with a bird 43, I can see how
the power increases as I raise the power output, yet on certain bands there
seems to be a point where at around 85w to 90w the power out appears to fold
back and the radio switches itself off.

There doesn't seem to be any link to what band is causing the problem, as I
have the problem on 160m, 30m 21m 12m, 10m and 6m.

So, what am I missing, or perhaps I should ask 'what have I done wrong or
forgotten to do'??

73,

Andy

[Elecraft] K3 and PR6 question

2009-04-02 Thread Andy GD0TEP
Hello to the group.

I must be missing something in the manual...

If I use the K3 (and 2nd receiver) with the radio TX on the main, but RX on
the sub receiver that is connected to the antenna via the BNC RX antenna
(with the SUB indicated on the display) is the PR6 pre-amp in line with the
sub receiver or not?

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 and PR6 question

Yes, that I think you can do. I don't have a PR6 to test it with though but
if you are

set up like this you should accomplish what you want...

1. Don't conntect the PR6 directly to the KXV3. Use very short jumpers (6
is fine).

2. Connect your RX antenna to the PR6 input that would normally connect to
the KXV3 RX

OUT. Have the PR6 set per the instructions otherwise so that its turned on
via the

DIG0 output of the ACCY connector for 6M.

3. Set the SUB antenna to MAIN.

4. Tap the RX ANT button so that the main (and sub since it's sharing) RX
is using the

RX antenna which is now going through the PR6 to the KXV3 RX IN.

When you transmit you are using ANT1 or ANT2 as selected. But when you are
receiving

you are using the RX antenna through the PR6.

However with this setup you will notice a 3dB drop because of the sub and
main sharing

the KXV3 RX antenna. If you have the PR6 output connected to the AUX RF
input you will

not have the 3dB drop but you will only have the RX ANT active on the sub
receiver and

it will need to be set to AUX vice MAIN. If you want the same RX antenna
through the

PR6 on both receivers without the drop you can connect the RX antenna as I
said to the

PR6 input and use a T adapter on the output of the PR6 to the Aux RF input
and the KXV3

RX IN connection.

actually going on under the lid of the radio.. :-)

It's difficult to tell just what's best when only going by what you can

I do not find the need to use the PR6 on the sub when using the AUX ANT
jack. MDS is typically in the -139 to -140 range via that path.

In general, when running the sub RX via its dedicated AUX ANT connector, it
has better 6M sensitivity than the main RX antenna path. The AUX ANT path
does not have to go through the main T/R switching network or the LPFs, as
it does on the main board when sharing the path with the main RX. This
eliminates any rx path loss from those items.

[Elecraft] K3 PR6 6m pre-amp question...

2008-11-27 Thread gd0tep
Hi Group,

My PR6 pre-amp arrived here today and I've got it connected.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I simply can't get it to work.

12v is taken from the AUX supply. (The 12v is good)
The White CTRL lead is connected to pin 11 on ACC
On the 6m band I've set CONFIG: DIGOUT1 to ON

I've removed the jumper P2 (although it didn't make any difference either
way)

The manual indicates tapping the RX antenna button to turn the pre-amp on,
and when I do, the radio stops receiving. (it's sat listening to a beacon)
and the RX is shown on the front panel.

Any ideas as to what I've got set wrong?

I think it also depends on the point of entry and where the customs
 centre is located.
Parcelforce International have a big clearing centre where all
 internal packages arrive.
Unfortunately, as I was told by a customs officer there, their
 computer system does not
accept the full TARIC code. So the officer enters the first N digits.
 In some cases, the
rate of duty varies between the exact codes of that group, so they
 charge the highest
 duty of the group.

This is not a problem that suppliers and shippers can solve. It's
systemic in the poor way in
which the IT support that supports customs within Parcelforce
 International works. So even
though Elecraft uses the correct code and this is demonstrably
 correct, you still get charged.

This happened to me when I ordered the KPA100 option. It took 2
 months to get my money
back. If you use a courier such as UPS, DHL etc, their customs
 clearance processes are
 usually better.

So I'm afraid there is little that you can do about this other than

RE: [Elecraft] 6M Preamp

2008-10-23 Thread gd0tep
As some one who bought the K3 purely for it's RX performance on 6m, can some
one tell me once and for all if it is as good as, or better/worse than,
other radios like the Icom 756 pro etc...
It was my understanding from information provided that it was, is this not
the case??

does represent a substantial premium for RX Loop pass-through and

I'm not saying that performance on six meters should have been higher than
the performance on the HF bands. I'm saying that it should not be worse than
an IC-756 PRO III, a TS-2000 or an FT-2000 would be, considering the claims
made about the K3's performance.

I have no idea of the proportion of K3 users who will never use 6 meters in
any serious way. However I think there are quite a few, such as myself, who
will have some fun on the band from time to time simply because modern HF
transceivers now include it. I'm certainly not serious enough about 6m to
spend money on a preamp for it, so I'm feeling a little short-changed after
receiving information that the K3 is so deaf on 6m that you need one. The
other radios mentioned above certainly are usable on 6m without a preamp by
all but the most diehard enthusiast who would probably want it at the
masthead anyway.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 and a transverter

2008-10-17 Thread gd0tep
Hi Lance group.

I also would appreciate it if somebody knows how to mute the K3 receiver
when a
separate XMTR is being used. I searched the manual but could not find it.

Something I've done to overcome a similar problem was TXing the K3 as well,
perhaps have it go split somewhere away from your TX frequency at low to
zero power?

Does that help?

RE: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 + Microham, the result

2008-10-03 Thread gd0tep
Firstly, thanks to everyone who replied to me, either direct or via the
list.

With a clear head and a fresh day, the K3 now transmits WSJT tones as
expected. The major stumbling block was simple in the end... Always make
sure there's sound coming out of the PC!! How it happened I can't say, I
simply don't know, but the sound out was muted... Yeah, now don't I feel a
dumbo :-)

Once that was sorted, I had tones but only just... The next issue was 'line
in' gain, further reading found the right setting in the menu to increase
the gain and hey presto, it works fine!

So, thanks to all who responded, all very helpful suggestions and ideas.

Further to this one.

Details I missed out:
Microham USB Interface 2, complete with Microham lead.

When trying to TX WSJT tones for a test, I get the following results:
On Data A, no signal at all.
AFSK A, no signal at all.
FSK D, solid tone when it should be alternating tones
PSK D, sounds like PSK31 when it should be alternating tones

I have the Microham 'PC out' lead plugged into the K3 Line in socket.
The Microham 'PC in' lead is plugged into the K3 Line out socket and works
as expected.

While in data mode, The MIC SEL is Line In.

So, I'm not sure what else I can look at...

[Elecraft] K3 - No power on SSB???

2008-09-30 Thread gd0tep
Hello to the group.

K3 01684 'factory built' was delivered last week, and I've only found time
to power it up today... It's a K3/10 with the KXV3.

I'm stuck on getting power out on SSB. It took a little while to figure out
the CW section, and that now works fine. I've gone over the manual a few
times but I must be missing something and I'll bet it's something stupid...
But I can't see what it is...

Also, looking at the power out options, I have an adjustable 0-12w on HF,
but only 0-8w on 6m... Is that right? I could have done with 10w on 6m.

I've yet to connect up my microham interface, I'm hopeful it'll work without
problem...

Advice about the power issue would be appreciated..

Thanks.

Thanks Don, your email was just a few seconds behind one that also mentioned
the Bias setting. I have the MH2 mic, and the bias was off.

I'll have a look at the microham tomorrow as it's getting late and mistakes

Andy,

You did not say what you were using for audio input, and we know it is
not coming from the Microham interface yet.

Do you have your microphone input set correctly? There are 2 inputs -
front and rear. Do you have an electret microphone? If so, you need to
turn bias on. With high output microphones (usually an electret element
of a dynamic mic with a preamp), you can use the Low mic gain range
setting but with low output microphones (like the Heil dynamic HC4/5
element mics) need the High setting. Set the mic gain and compression
level as stated in the manual - 5 to 7 bars of ALC showing on peaks and
compression to suit you. Use TX Test mode to set it up and listen to
your voice in the monitor to judge how much compression is good for you.

Of course, there will be no power output in SSB without any audio input.

73,
Don W3FPR
