Re: [Elecraft] [K2] K2 -- Audio output

2010-01-11 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
Disable the AGC and see if the volume goes up quite a bit, if it does
then the AGC voltage set point is not set proper, go thru that part of
the alignment again.

Re: [Elecraft] Band button

2008-07-05 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
I think what he is trying to say is that if you hit the band up button, it
actually selects a higher frequency band, not a higher band number.

ie: I'm on 7020 (40 meters) and hit the ban up button it goes to 10,140 (30
meters). So it's not going to a higher number band but a higher frequency.
I've never given this much thought over the last 45 years and just went with
the convention. I guess it's all semanticsanyhow Don is right, if you
want re-label your controls, but don't change mine.

US Postal Priority Mail International = $131
US Postal Express Mail International = $164
UPS Worldwide Expedited = $372
UPS Worldwide Express = $410

How risky is it to use the US Postal service? I'm worried about the
delivery taking a month or two and the package arriving in more bits than
when it was sent.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: Does the K2 have a built in SWR meter ?

2008-04-29 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
The basic K2 does not have a bridge on the output...the KPA100 amplifier and
the KAT100 tuner both have bridges. The 100 has a SWR display from the
bridge, the KPA100 is used basically as a power meter circuit.

It looks like the K2 (original qrp) version does not ,
but the K2/100 does.

Do you agree ?

these? Either pro or con comments would be welcome. How well does their

[Elecraft] FW: K2/100, KAT100-1 and extras for Sale

2007-04-30 Thread Gregg R. Lengling

Updated as a number of people has me to set an asking price. Total package
cost me with upgrades and what-not over $1800.00.

So I'll set an asking price of $1450.00 with shipping and insurance
included to the lower 48 states.

I’m entertaining offers for my K2 in order to justify buying a K3.

K2 S# 3075, professionally built. Includes KPA 100, KNB2, KSB2, K160RX ,
MH2, KDSP2, FDIMP and KAT100-1.

Rig has been upgraded to PLL temp compensated upgrade kit. Professionally
aligned using IFR1200S and spectrogram (including RTTY filters for PSK and
digital modes)

All manuals and documentation included.

As a bonus included will be XG2 Signal Generator and DL1 20 watt dummy
load.

All in mint condition, great rig hate to get rid of it…but the XYL says if I
want a K3 I can’t have both.

(After she gets over it, I’ll probably order a new K2 just for something to
build and to give me a portable rig.)

I tried to run PC anywhere ver 11 but it won't run on my vista. I need
to splurge 200 bucks for it. Nuts.
I download VNC (free) and do not understand how to use it yet. I also
down load that audio one, Skype? and had no issue using that.
I was able to make my lap communicate with my desk top well with Skype.

However if you have Ham Radio Deluxe, it will do same thing. You
need to install one in each PC, get skype in each PC, and it should
work same way.
HRD remote will not work with Vista. (again, nuts)

I'm thinking of dumping Vista. (I got it with my new lap) to make my
world little easier to do ham radio remote.
Let me know how you do ...
Good luck

RE: [Elecraft] PC Anywhere...

2007-04-15 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
The problem with PC Anywhere is the bandwidth that it requires and creates
latency. I use Ham Radio Deluxe which operates with a host program running
on 1 computer and a client program on the other. This in conjunction with
Skype to pass the 2-way audio works great. I've done demos (last one a
couple weeks ago at Superfest at AES in Milwaukee) and latency ends up being
very low. For my home station from Milwaukee to Cedarburg (home) less than
20ms latency on all operations, from Milwaukee to India under 300ms, still
great as anything under 400 or so ms works well. I have tried with
PcAnywhere which requires much more data to transfer and latency goes way up
and all actions are very delayed.

RE: [Elecraft] AGC Independent S-Meter?

2007-03-11 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
If you actually duplicate the AGC circuitry in the K2 for the S-meter would
probably be a simple move. S-meter readings are okay but I don't trust
reports from others because very few people have calibrated S-meters and
even if they are they become dependant on RF Gain Settings, Preamps and
attenuators. They are what they are a Relative Indicator and nothing more
when it comes to most Amateur Radio operation. I usually leave the RF gain
at full unless I'm on the TopBand and just use Xtal filters and the DSP
module to give me a clean received signal.

Anyhow on most Contests and other things you always get a 599 as everyone is
too intent on making contacts to actually give you a real report.

As I typically leave the AF gain at maximum and use the RF gain control to
set
the listening level (Better signal to noise ratio.) the S-meter is not too
useful. Also with the AGC turned off the S-meter is not operational.

Anyone have any ideas for an AGC independent S-meter?

I was thinking perhaps use some sort of high impedance RF voltage detector
between D34 and T7 on the RF board. Then amplify the voltage to the level
and
range required at the S-meter voltage connection (pin RA1 of the MCU), so
the
existing meter could still be used. Of course the connection from the MCU to

the AGC line would have to be disconnected.

That's an excellent way to go, I did this for a friend and he loves it.
Only one thing you have to remember, when you use it as a QRO station it
automatically shuts off and bypasses the internal tuner, when you unplug
everything and go portable with it you must remember to turn the tuner back
on in the menu. That's the only thing you have to remember.

Good Luck,

Don, John & Gregg,

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I think I will put the new stuff in
a EC2 enclosure and leave the QRP K2 alone - particularily since I already
have the KIO2 installed. Seems that might eliminate some of the heating
isues as well.

Tom,

You existing KAT2 (and everything else in the QRP K2 top cover) is removed
and the KPA100 installs in place of it.

There is another option available to you - if you want to retain the QRP K2
for portable use, then mount the KAT100-2 and the KPA100 together in an
external EC2 enclosure. That configuration does require the KIO2 in your
QRP K2, but it works well. If you choose this configuration, your KAT2
stays in place but is automatically bypassed with the output routed to the
ANT1 connector.

If you want the KPA100 mounted on the K2 instead of externally, order the
KAT100-1 (the lower height enclosure is included).

The KAT100 can be located anywhere in the shack that your cable length to it
will allow. The kit includes all cables and connectors except the coax to
the KAT100. You need a control cable between the K2 and the KAT100, and
that same cable will become a 'Y' cable if you also wire the connector at
the K2 end with the cable for attaching to a computer serial port (that wire
is included too).

RE: [Elecraft] KPA100-1

2007-03-04 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
#1no Y connectors and you will have everything to hook up the 2 kits
except for the Coaxial Cable to go from the K2 to the KAT100.

#2...No the existing ATU gets removed.

#3..You can place it almost anywhere in your shack...1 foot, 10 foot away.
You will have to make a control cable longer than the one described in the
manual for the tuner. In that case you will probably have to supply your
own wire depending on the distance you want to remote it.

RE: [Elecraft] Re:Problem with KPA 100 (no power selection possible)

2007-02-27 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
[Gregg R. Lengling] what you need to look at is the SWR/Power bridge circuit
in the amp. I had a lightning hit that screwed up my amp and caused it to
always be full power and it turned out this is the circuit that caused the
problem. The VRFDET line is used to control the output power of the unit,
it needs to be able to see if requested power = delivered power. So you
have a problem there. This is where you start.

Just power the unit from the lower coaxial power jack and you have a QRP
rig. If you turn the power down you'll get the same thing but you'll have
higher current draw due to the idling current and circuits in the amp.

2007-02-21 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
Welcome David and believe me you won't be sorry. I have only 1 HF rig in
the shack and it's been the K2 for years now. I have gone thru multiple
other mobile rigs for my car including the K2, but I didn't have space up
front for the K2 to mount properly, I've finally settled on a TS480SAT for
mobile operation as I also wanted 6 meters in the car.

You are going to have a blast building the rig and even more fun running it.

Subject: [Elecraft] New guy checking in...

Hi All..

Just introducing myself. I'll probably be around for awhile as I will
soon be ordering a K2. I built dozens of Heathkits back in the day and
I've built quite a few homebrew audio amps and guitar amps (mostly
vintage Fender and Marshall circuits). I have a fondness for tube gear
and I'm currently using vintage Heath ham gear (SB-301 rx, SB-401 tx
and SB-201 amp). The only modern rigs I've ever owned are the Yaesu
FT-100, FT-897 and FT-900. I wasn't overly impressed with any of them,
and I always seem to drift back to vintage tube gear. I recently
started reading up on QRP and I'm ready to try my hand at using low
power for a change. I've never done that. After much research for the
ideal QRP rig, it seems the K2 is the way to go. I figure any product
that can score 4.9/5.0 on eHam with 118 reviews must stand on merit
rather than hype. Plus, after following this reflector for a few weeks,
I can see that a very valuable user knowledge base exists. It's a
no-brainer. I'm really looking forward to building this rig and hearing
that remarkable receiver that everyone seems to be talking about. It
sure will be nice to work QSK CW without hearing those relays chatter.
I trust it will work well with my Hustler 6BTV vertical.

I've made an agreement with the XYL that I will not put any new money
into my toys, so I must recycle. I have a Neumann studio mic on ebay
that should more than cover the cost of the K2. :->

Subject: [Elecraft] Custom K2?

Although none of us (AFAIK) are allowed access to the
control firmware source, its action is well specified and
effectively forms an Application Programming Interface.
It would be possible to put the K2 into a bigger box,
remove the front panel and wire up a custom microcontroller
to all the buttons, knobs, rotary encoder and LED signal
strength meter - the API.

The new controller would interface to a new much larger
panel with, e.g., an analogue meter, simulating double key
pressings with a single button, such as one marked "AGC Off",
and many other more convenient features that the K2 can't
do because of limited and already crowded panel area, and
the necessity to keep the cost to that of a marketable product.

Putting the current rotary encoder on the new panel,
it might be possible to add variable speed tuning by having
the new controller read the encoder and feed varying speed
signals to the K2 encoder interface.
Being more adventurous, it might be possible to implement
IF shift by simultaneously operating the BFO setting and
the tuning encoder. Being extravagant, a full colour
display could replace the K2's LCD and one of those great
old mechanical dials could be used.
A larger speaker, internal power supply, - the K2 could
be turned into a large base station with all kinds of new
features.

With the K2 control API, the new panel would be largely
limited only by the implementor's imagination. If the
Elecraft list members colaberated and shared the source code
of the new microcontroller, this would open up a new dimension
in customizing a K2.

I see Andy, N8MX has gone a little way towards such a
project: he has separated the display and put the K2 in a
mounting on his bike in the first old picture gallery.

Is the K2 worthy of such elaboration?

RE: [Elecraft] Coil winding novice

2007-02-09 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
The biggest thing is stripping and tinning the leads. I have a De-soldering
station that works very well to run the leads into the hole and strip with
heat and solder. But you can carefully scrape the enamel off or use a very
fine grit sandpaper to strip them and then tin them very well and look for
the very thin coat of solder that tinning does. This is probably the most
important part of the build. Always double check them before installing
with an ohm meter to make sure you really have them tinned and there is no
resistance. Once installed and soldered, carefully inspect the joints with
a magnify lens to make sure you have a very nice clean joint, if the wire is
sticking thru and isn't looking very soldered...it's not and may work now
but will fail later. Once this is done, check it again with an ohm meter to
make sure everything has continuity.

Just a little patience and double checking and you'll be fine.

[Elecraft] K2 control software

2007-02-08 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
You have to remember that there is quite a bit in that firmware. All the
calibration and linearization routines are in there. Do you really want to
sit down and write code to try and set up VFO linearity, or code to properly
address the xtal filters. This is a daunting task and I would never release
the code to something like this that must have taken hours and hours to make
work properly. Especially seeing as the limited memory space available.
This is not a Microsoft project where a 10k program is written with 500mb's
of code and uses 150mb of memory to run.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 stops keying

2007-02-03 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
It sounds like a power supply problem. I would look at the voltage you are
supplying both at the supply itself and in the K2's display and watch it.
I've seen people that use too small wire or have a bad connection to the K2
and as you pull current it heats up the connection and creates a voltage
drop and the K2 will then reset.

Good Luck,

I'll be posting a revue this weekend at Eham but I have posted a few

RE: [Elecraft] XV144 transverter question

2007-01-30 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
You would have to put a splitter in to create two RX IF paths. You would
have to set it up to use a split mode xcvr connection in order to do this
easily. However you could run with a single port xcvr if you modify the
relay schema for tx/rx switching in the control circuitry of the XV. Also
you would have to raise the output gain of the mixer output by 3dB to make
up for the splitter in Rx mode.

All in all it's very doable if you really want to.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Quiet cooling

2007-01-25 Thread Gregg R. Lengling

[Gregg R. Lengling] I think the whole fan noise thing is being overplayed.
I've had my KPA100 for a number of years now and really never notice it.
Case in point: I did some computer changes and then I started doing some
Beta Testing on a new Digital Mode Software Program (DM780 by Simon Brown
HB9DRV). It seemed to work okay on decode but for some reason I wasn't
happy with it. Then I tried responding to a station and noticed I had no
power output. Spent a bit of time adjusting levels and playing and couldn't
get it to work very well. Made a number of long winded contacts this way and
the fan was running. Finally I noticed that instead of having my soundcard
selected for the software it had my webcam with built-in microphone via a
USB port. Anyhow the point is that I was receiving the PSK signals and
acoustically coupling them from the internal speaker in the KPA100 to the
microphone in the camera and was still decoding. Had fan noise been a
problem I'm sure I would never have been able to decode anything.

Speaking of knobs for the K2, does anybody know of alternate knob types for
the knobs other than the tuning knob?

I think that a K2 would look even better with small, white-line-indexed,
fluted, skirted knobs like the ones on the old Hammarlund receivers.

I have seen a few of those from Mouser, et. al., but they seem to be either
too large in diameter, or the wrong shaft size. I would be very interested
in finding that type of knob to replace the stock knobs, even if they are
(relatively) expensive.

Dohn,

You may want to look at the Yaesu FT-847 tuning knob. I have not yet
removed mine from its home on the FT-847, but it is about 1 1/2 inch
diameter and has a finger-dimple hole and a rubber ring. Yaesu considers
the ring a separate part.

The FT-900 knob has been discontinued, and many have used the FT-100 knob
which is a bit smaller. On my K2s, I have the rubber rings from the FT-900
that are stretched a bit and placed over the stock K2 knob - you can add a
finger-dimple if you want, I have little use for them, but that is just my
style.

Subject: RE: [Elecraft] Re: Elecraft: K2 Audio Problem

Bernie, are you looking for lots of noise from the K2 audio with the antenna
*disconnected*?

Reading your message below, that sounds like it might be the case.

My K2 is fairly quiet with no antenna. I like that the K2 does not have an
excess amount of internally-generated noise.

I grabbed my sound level meter and made some measurements with both the RF
and AF gain full "up" right at the speaker (put the sound meter mic right
against the top of the rig over the speaker) and the AGC OFF so see how much
audio it can produce.

On 10 meters (the band with the least local QRN) with no antenna connected
and the preamp On (normal on 10 meters) the sound level is 103 dB with the
AGC off. Checking the QRN level with the AGC On indicates about S4. The
S-meter is calibrated to show no bars with the antenna disconnected and S9
with 50 uV at the antenna. (Remember, that 103 dB is *at* the speaker. It's
a more reasonable 68 dB about 2 feet away where my ears usually are when
operating the K2.)

Connecting an antenna to the K2 jumps that background up from 103 dB to 126
dB at the speaker. At that level I'd not want to stay in the room with the
rig more than a few seconds! The noise hurts at arm's length away.

Down on 40 meters the QRN level is about S-6. At full volume, AGC off, it
pegs my noise level meter at 126 dB. Without an antenna the noise level at
the speaker is about 93 dB compared to 103 dB on 10. That's because I have
the preamplifier turned off on 40.

Of course the bandwidth makes a huge difference when listening to noise.
Those are levels of normal band QRN coming through the SSB filter.

Over the years there have been a number of perfectly credible reports of
*some* K2s having audio that was often reported as "anemic". I've never seen
a good reason for that reported here, nor do I recall anyone discovering an
assembly problem that cause it either.

Ron AC7AC

-Original Message-

Well, I checked my audio, 40m, antenna disconnected,
quiet room, no PreAmp or Attenuation, found no
difference between AGC On & Off. RF Gain max (fully
clockwise); AF gain has to be basically full clockwise
to get semi-decent audio (internal speaker, or
external via rear audio jack). PreAmp On helps crank
it up. Have not checked speaker wiring, will do that
as soon as I can and report back. Only major bummer
I've run into w/my K2, S/N 5601, so far.
But given that this sounds like a somewhat common
problem, I'm thinking I'll need to get an amplified
speaker. Perhaps Elecraft needs to look into and
address the issue?

   72 de N8PVZ
 ---bernie

BTW, I had the rig built for me, and the builder did
an overall excellent job, so I think the audio issue
is somewhat unlikely to be an assembly problem.

a USB convertor for everything that HRD is controllingYipee (radio,

RE: [Elecraft] rx audio output K2

2007-01-07 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
This topic comes up many times over and over on the reflector. If you radio
is properly aligned and built you should have plenty of rx audio with the
volume set at 8 or 9 o'clock. In the past the major problem has been those
that don't have the AGC properly set and thus the AGC is reining in the
received signals. The easiest test to see if you have the AGC set properly
is to just turn it off and if you have an increase in volume you are not
properly set.

Not all USB convertors are equal. Over the HRD website you will see
litany's of problems regarding them along with a recommended list of
compliant convertors. Unfortunately it sounds like the SIIG is one of those
that don't do their job properly. The reason it works with the 990 is their
levels are probably not as strict as the good RS232 that the K2 has. Check
out the interfacing section for this information at

Hi Gang

I just came back from the local electronics superstore with a USB to 2 port

serial converter made by SIIG. My aim was to get rid of the usb to serial

converter pigtails cluttering up the place. The new usb-to-serial converter

won't work with the K2. It works fine with my FT-990. And I have tried

switching the ports (IE port1 to 990, port 2 to K2 and vice versa). During

all tests the FT-990 communicates fine with the computer but the K2 does

not. The K2 seems to work fine when plugged back into the USB-to-serial

pigtail from a different manufacturer. There may not be a solution to this,
but

I thought I'd give the brain-trust here a crack before I box the thing up
and

take it back to the electronics superstore...that is a 3 hour round trip.

Any ideas?? Fred N9TA K2# 4502

PS: I have tried switching com port numbers in windows XP.

I have Windows XP Media Center Edition.

And I am using Logic 7.0 for logging and Ham Radio Deluxe for fun.

Neither Logic or HRD will communicate with the K2 through the new

   USB to Serial gizmo.

The new usb to serial gizmo claims to work with durn near anything
and

lists "Built in 16550 UART with 16 byte FIFO buffers"...whatever in
the

   heck all that might mean.

I've only been at this for less than a year, so my logging needs
have not been very intense. So far, I've been logging in a spreadsheet
on my ancient Psion PDA.

This works fine for my fairly casual operating - I play in a few
contests for contacts, but not for points - but it does not help
me with things like LOTW, which I'd like to start using.

Since I have a K2 at the home QTH, it seems like Ham Radio Deluxe is
an obvious place to start, and I'll start there. But I also operate /P
with my KX1. I'd like to keep a single log and have it be pretty
easy to switch virtual QTHs - I tried this once in eQSL and the
pain of multiple QTHs drove me away, screaming.

I'm contemplating switching to a Palm PDA, so I'd be interested
in hearing about logging software that runs there, especially if it
knows how to export the log in a way that HRD will import :-)

Thanks very much.

Re: [Elecraft] Mic Gain, K2/100

Just remember also that the OP1 filter for SSB receive is also used on
transmit. I found that my Heil Pro headset was too muddy so I tailored the
OP1 filter for best response and have got fantastic audio reports on my K2.

Bill et al,

A few years ago Bob Hightower, NK7M,s old a mic preamp kit designed . The
printed circuit board was small and fit inside the K2 or some microphones.
I got one and have had good results from it. I use the Kenwood stock hand
microphone for the TS-850S. I picked the mic up on ebay for $20.

The links to Bob's preamp kit are not valid. Maybe someone else knows how
to reach Bob.

I was finally able to get my K2 (#0061) upgraded to a K2/100 just prior to
CQWW this past weekend. The KPA100 was bought in 2004 and sat on a shelf
for

a year or two.

Anyway, I was doing some A/B checks after completing and testing the unit,
while trying to call some stations on 20 meters.

I compared a Yeasu FT-890 to the K2/100.
I noticed there were a few stations that I called and called on the K2,
that
were then workable in one or two calls after switching over to the FT-890.
I

did some power checks, and found that in CW mode, the K2 was the same, if
not slightly more power (reading on the same meter, same antenna, using an
A/B switch)

But on SSB, the voice peaks of the K2 are 25-30% lower than those of the
FT-890. I am using dynamic mikes on both radios... on the K2 it's a Yaesu
MH-31 Mic. I also used this mic on both radios and noted voice power peaks
almost twice that of the K2 (70 w vs 40w). My K2 is set for SSBA of 3, and
SSBC of 3-1. My KSB2 firmware is 1.07

I have seen a few references to mods on the KSB2, including swapping
resistors to increase mic gain. I have also seen references that they
should

not be done on K2/100 units.

Are there any internal mic gain mods that can be used on the KSB2 in a
K2/100? Is there anything else I can do short of the external mic amp?

I also notice that sometimes I get full power on the first "letter",
sometimes it starts lower on "whiskey 1" and bumps up on "papa alpha" --
anyone else seen this on the K2/100?

Re: [Elecraft] N1MM Contest Logger VFO B issue

2006-10-29 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
If you are having problems with HRD with you setup I would venture to say
the problem is not with your radio or the software but the USB-232 converter
you are using. I use HRD exclusively and have no problems. You will see
quite a few people having problems with certain USB converters repeatedly on
the HRD forums site and you will also see a lot of good recommendations for
better USB adaptors. That is the first place I would look.

I updated my copy of N1MM Logger (v6.10.10)in the hope
that I would be able to get into the CQWW this weekend
and noticed that it didn't recognize VFO B either.

On a related note, I downloaded, installed and
configured Ham Radio Deluxe a few evenings ago and
found that it's ability to display the K2's frequency
was very shaky. If the K2 was tuned to 7015.45 kHz
then HRD would display the correct freq for a few
seconds, then it might display something like 701 for
a few seconds, then 545 for a few more secs, then some
other combination of digits from the freq
next...changing every 10 or 15 seconds.

The K2 is connected to my notebook via the cable
provided with the KIO2 and through a serial-to-USB
converter.

Any help would be gratefully accepted.

Yes you can and the easiest way is to use HRD (Ham Radio Deluxe). I use
this to remote control my station from anywhere. Go to
http://forums.ham-radio.ch and peruse the forums and learn all about it and
then go ahead and download the software. Please note this is FREE as Simon
wants to keep Ham Radio Free.

It's not a huge priority for me and I'm a computer dunce but I did go
ahead and make up the interface cable from the K2/100 to the computer.
The problem is that the Dell laptop I use in the shack (I use AClog by
N3FJP) has no db9 port, just USB. I did hook up to the desktop that is
nearby and the interface works fine. We do have a wireless home network
so my question is - can I leave the K2 hooked up to the desktop and access
any control software and my AClog through the network or do I need to buy
a db9/usb interface to go directly to my laptop? If I can use the network
(which was set up by our 19 year old son who is away at college so unable
to help computer dunce Dad) how do I go about doing so?

It depends on whether you want to be CW only. If you are a phone op, then
definitely the K2SSB, but in order of importance to me I'd add the K160RX,
not only does it give you 160 meters, but a receive only antenna port. The
next would be the Noise Blanker, I couldn't live without mine.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Software Front Panel Extension

No only that but you can have complete remote control over your K2 station.
I've been running HRD a long time and for the last year I've been using the
remote features and operating my home station from any WiFi hotspot with my
laptop. It's nice to sit in the back yard with the laptop and work HF and
even control my rotor...neat watching the antenna turn instead of craning my
neck and looking out the window.

Thank you Leigh and Don for your suggestions.

I was thinking, ok, I could accept a computer screen K2 front panel
extension if it included logging software. My immediate reaction was,
I'll have to write the software myself. But, it has been done, and it's
called Ham Radio Deluxe! Thanks Don for the introduction.

I've downloaded Ham Radio Deluxe this evening. Tomorrow, I'll get the K2
RS-232 serial cable out of the attic and give the program a try. I
already have another logging program, but haven't really begun using it
yet. So, it's finally time to rearrange the desk in my shack to give the
laptop better space and try the Ham Radio Deluxe concept.

Re: [Elecraft] Antenna wire gauge efficiency

2006-08-10 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
The biggest factor (if you are running less than 100 watts) is the strength
of the wire. Whilst 26/28 gauge and other lightweight wires will radiate
properly at these levels, it's the tensile strength that is the main point.
I use 28 gauge teflon wire for portable operations but at my home station I
use 12 gauge. According to the NEC, wire antennas must be a minimum 12
gauge, so if you want to be perfectly legal run 12 gauge.

Paul, I am certain you will get more responses, and since I do not have
the formulas in my head, I suggest you wait for the more knowledgeable
folks to weigh in. However, if you plan on going up into the hundreds of
watts, I would be thinking in the 14 gauge area. Personally, my antennas
are 12 gauge, but that was because ...
A) I used it as much for its added strength as for its electrical
characteristics ( I live in heavy woods)
B) It was the wire I had lots of on hand. (Application of the Cortina
Economic Applications of Existing Resources)

One more thing I might add is that in case you had not planned on doing
this, use a system of pulleys (I use marine pulleys) so that as the trees
(I assume you are erecting the antenna between trees) sway, the antennas
will give. If you need more info on this, contact me off list. I will be
happy to send you a graphic of how I do this.

Best of luck.

Hello all. I know this is somewhat off topic, but there is a lot of
knowledge here, so I will ask. I am in the process of erecting two wire
antennas and wondered, for stealth reasons, how small I can go in wire
gauge for these antennas and still have an effeicient radiator. I know
in general bigger is better and copper glad is prefereable. I will be
running anywhere from QRP to 400 watts. It seems like I have seen tables

Reread your CC&Rs. Maybe they do allow TV antennas. You probably have
neighboors who use Satellite for TV. Just say you have HDTV and run a UHF
Yagi up a pole. Tell them it's for HD, but insulate the bottom. Instant
top-hat vertical!

YMMV, but how can they say no TV? That's un-American.

Re: [Elecraft] Current drain for KSB2

If you look at the schematic you will find that there isn't a special
voltage that is controlled going to the KSB2, just the normal 8R and 8T
power lines. So no, this board will be on all the time. BUT, 10 to 15 in
the grand scheme is not much for having SSB available on the trail. The K2

I found one of the easiest ways is just use HRD (Ham Radio DeluxeFREE )
and if you want to run audio just use Skype with autoanswer. It works
great, I take my laptop to work on my long days and use the WiFi at work to
play on the bands. And the IT guy at work thought he was a nerd, at least
until he walked into my office one day and saw me on the laptop.

In the APRPack Yahoo group we are working on a set of TCP protocols for
remote and local operation of digimode software. One goal is remote
operation as you suggest. Another is to allow client software to run
locally and interact with the modem software. A third goal is to allow
UI designers to make good programs for hams to use, and to let DSP
designers make good modems, and then to let us lucky hams mix and match.

I built a prototype and have screenshots at http://wa5znu.org/rpsk but we
are now looking into the issues the prototype raised. I also demo'd a
cell phone client once and there are screenshots there.

Re: [Elecraft] How can the KNB2 be tested?

2005-12-26 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
Robin that is a good way to test it, also scratching on the preamp
transistor will cause the same noise. You will find it is very effective at
removing ignition noise from cars. I've used my K2 mobile and it's one of
the most effective spark plug noise removers I've ever seen.

Hi,

I have also recently built this unit and the only way I could test it was by
scratching the antenna input with a metal object. I can hear that it removes
the 'clicks' out of the peaks, but I have not been able to test it against
real pulse noise. Whatever else I have tried hasn't seemed to make a
difference, then again, it may not have been pulsed noise.

Subject: RE: [Elecraft] Setting the AGC Threshold on K2

Jeff,

Try measuring the voltage at U2 pin 5 again making certain your probes
both

have good contact.

The voltage at U2 pin 5 is determined only by a resistor network - if it
is
still quite low, check the voltage on the 8A line - the output of
regulator

U4 (upper leg) - it should be 8 volts.

If you have 8 volts at U4, then check and re-check the soldering of
Control

Board RP6, R1 and U2, then remeasure. Remember that the voltage is
determined only by a resistive network (which includes the RF Gain pot),
there are no active components involved, so if the voltages to the
resistors

and the connections are proper, you should achieve the correct voltage for
the AGC Threshold.

Be aware that the voltage for the AGC Threshold may not be optimum for
your

K2. After your K2 is fully built, aligned, and everything is working
properly, you can optimize the AGC Threshold so that the AGC does not
become

active with no signal into the K2 antenna - so don't be concerned if the
3.8 volts is near the upper limit, I find that the optimum setting will
vary

from a low of 3.65 volts to a high of 3.78 volts.

Don W3FPR

-Original Message-

I've just completed the first alignment and test and everything
checks out except setting the AGC threshold.

When I put the probe of my DMM on pin 5 of U2 (a hellish place to get
consistent readings) and adjust R1
I get only .002 DC volts.

I've resoldered the pins on both U2 and R1. I've looked through
Troubleshooting and the Reflector and
haven't found anything relevant.

By the way I had no trouble with the S-Meter alignment which is
dependent on the AGC threshold.

Is there any place else I should look on the control board for a
possible source of trouble, or could U2 or
R1 be defective? (I know components are rarely defective).

TIA,

Jeff

Re: [Elecraft] Options for K2

2005-11-15 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
There are only a few options that are mutally exclusive. Otherwise you can
fully load it.

Case 1: Only one Audio filter the KAF2 or the KDSP2
Case 2: The KAT2 and KBT2 can coexist, but neither can coexist with the
KPA100

Case 3: KPA100 or KIO2, not both as the KPA100 has the KIO2 built-in.

My Radio has the KPA100, KDSP2, KNB2, K160RX, KSB2, FDIMP and K60XV and
numerous upgrades and revisions. Of course seeing as the KAT2 couldn't work
with the KPA100, I have the KAT100 external.

How many options can you fit into a bare-bones K2, including the 100

And also, what are the most popular options everyone has, and why?

It's easy enough to create one and put a switch in to turn the sense circuit
on and off. I've done this on many amps, especially on VHF/UHF amps to cure
this SSB problem.

I am trying to drive an external amp, 300W amp, with my base QRP K2. The
issue I am having is that during SSB mode transmissions, the amp's T/R
switch often opens and closes between the sylables of some words. Is
there an adjustment I can make in the K2 to help lessen this? Otherwise,
it seems to working well. Also, when working with such an amp with CW,
should it be set for AM mode?

Re: [Elecraft] KNB2 Noise Blanker Not Working

2005-11-15 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
Yes you should see the pulse there. I had the same problem when I built
mine a few years back and ended up right where you are, but what I found was
that I had a bad connection on C8 the coupling cap on the output of Q5. The
result will also look like a bad Transistor with no pulse showing on the
collector.

I've had my K2 built for about 2 months now. Everything works except the
noise blanker. I've looked at a lot of archives on this. What I have
done to test it is:

1. Scratch the top of Q21 on the RF board to generate noise.
2. Using an oscilloscope, I can trace the noise pulse through Q2-Q4 on
KNB2 borad.
3. I do see a noise pulses on the "GATE" node and at the base of Q5.
When I turn off the NB, this pulse goes away as expected.
4. I do not see any pulse on collector of Q5. Since the pulse on the
base of Q5 saturates Q5, should I see anything on the collector?

I'm not sure if I have a bad Q5. I am going to replace it today.

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] CW-Pitch 600 Hz or 700 Hz or what?

2005-11-13 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
I suggest you all try finding a copy of RadCom from a few months ago. There
was some very interesting research into the human ears response at various
frequencies relating to intelegibility of CW signals. And the human ear has
much more dynamic range in the 400 to 800 Hz area and thus that is why many
operators use that range and it's becoming more and more a standard.

This subject has been discussed on the TenTec reflector, too. I tend to
agree with K2VCO's ideas concerning the ear's ability to discern slight
differences in pitch better at low frequencies. Bill Tippett, W4ZV, really
got my attention when he divulged that he uses very low pitches (below 300
Hz) to copy weak signal DX. (Bill is one of the best in the world.) Ever
since I learned that, I've set my Omni 6 as low as it would go (400 Hz).
What's the range on the K2?

2005-11-01 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
Can't speak for the K1 but I did run my K2 mobile and was very happy with
it. I used hamsticks on various bands. I since subbed the Yaesu FT857 into
the car because I wanted the K2 on the base and the yaesu could be put in
the trunk with the head up front, and it also covered 6, 2 and 70 cm for
local FM operation.

Tried it with a K1 and 40m Hamstick antenna, trunk-lip mounted, 99% of
operation was RX-only on 40 meter CW. Worked well! I also worked a few
stations with that setup -- weak but carried out the QSO. I paid no
attention to fine-tuning for efficiency -- more like "seat of the pants"
stuff and enjoyed it greatly. I don't find the K1, K2 or KX1 particularly
well suited for mobile use *while driving* but they do work well enough,
especially for casual RX operation. For the sake of functionality,
flexibility, ease of installation, suitability to task, and bang for the
buck, the 706MkIIG wins. My heart and soul remain with Elecraft CW
though. I'll be driving to a vacation spot in late November and plan to
take the 706 for the road trip but will take my Elecraft with me for the
week-long stay when we get there!

You really need to use spectrograph to align your filters...your transmitter
is probably on frequency it's just your filters aren't properly centered so
your receive is off.

Hi gang,

My K2 (2631) with KSB2 doesn't transmit and receive on the same
frequency.

There's about a 70Hz difference on lower sideband and 50Hz on upper. The
transmit frequency is always lower than the receive frequency.

Carrier supression is great, transmit audio sounds good, and I'm within no
more than 100Hz away from the suggested frequencies. The package came
with

3.6Khz markings.

I've run Cal PLL a number of times. The VFO is accurate and linear. It
just won't transmit and receive on the same frequency.

Any thoughts?

because you're keying the rig in SSB mode with no audio.

Like I said simple and stupid, but easy to happen.

I've been thru this and found that most of the damage was to the

I would start there.

See what the K2's DISPLAY command says.

When you say that you can't get over 2 watts do you mean that

a) when you turn the power control all the way up it says 2 watts on the
display, or

b) when you turn the power all the way up it says 15 watts, but your
wattmeter shows only 2 watts?

Are you testing it by holding the key down, or are you pressing TUNE? Tune
limits the power to 2 watts with current ffirmware.

Re: [Elecraft] RST v. Pre-Amp...?

2005-06-15 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
Signal strength is all relative unless everyone has a calibrated S-meter
using the same parameters. I would give him the report I have using the rig
in the mode I'm in at the present. Whether or not that you have a preamp
running shouldn't matter as its all subjective. If he wants to know the
amount of signal actually making it to your rig from your antenna, then you
have to decide how you calibrated your s-meter. Of course you can 3
different antennas hooked up and have 3 different reports for him/her (9 if
you count preamp in/out and attenuator).

I personally don't care what my signal level is to the receiving station, I
just want to know my RS or RST. If I have a clean signal and am extremely
or comfortably readable that is the desired result.

Now if I'm testing out different antennas, or course I'm going to want to
know the difference is S readings, but that should only tell me that the
antenna is working better or worse to the other station.

These are my personal comments, and after 40 plus years of ham radio, we all
know every report is subjective...there is no definitive reporting system.

My K2 being my first rig with a switchable preamp,
I find myself wondering which RST I should give, in a
situation where I think the other op is interested in
the "real or "actual" RST, whatever that might mean.

Is it the strength with or without the pre-amp
switched in? Which would YOU prefer to hear?

I tend to give the RST as it appears with the rig
set for optimal reception: sometimes with, sometimes
without.

I'm aware of the mod to house the 100 W amp externally, but am thinking
this might not be what I'm looking for. For the handfull of times each
year when I run QRP away from home it'd be nice to have the internal
battery and 20W antenna tuner. When I'm operating at home, which is by
far most of the time, I'd use the 100 W stage.

So the obvious solution seems to be to buy battery, tuner & amp. After
looking through the KAP100 manual, p. 20 in particular, I believe all
I'd have to do is swap the QRO cover with amp for the QRP cover with
battery and tuner. Is that all there is to it? Is there anything else
I should be aware of regarding dropping back to QRP, especially the
effects of the (p. 54 KAP100 manual) RS-232 control board modifications?

Thanks,

I've been in touch with Kevin/KD5ONS, and I'm going to try spearheading a
30m
version of the Elecraft CW Net Tuesday evening (UTC Wed) from z-0100z
on

10115 +/- 2kHz.

30m is (in my opinion) one of the best bands to operate QRP because it has
less

noise than 40m, and just about everyone is running 'barefoot' on 30m, so
there's less chance of getting our 'toes' stepped on when we turn down the
power. Except for the occasional DX pileup, it's usually a nice quiet
place to

make contacts and ragchew, and now with the waning sunspot cycle, 30m is
getting longer earlier - so hopefully we'll be able to get stations
checking in

from all over this spring.

If we get enough interest, and if I can figure out this net-control
business,
maybe we can figure out a way for folks to work towards their K2 awards at
the

same time.

upgrading the CW waveform and doing the Stability mod and the xtal filter

Well I guess there's the SSB crystal mod, and the ones to make it better
with the amp, and the keying one for PSK, but I don't recall one mod yet
that would improve the basic QRP CW rig receiver-wise. I think the
Elecraft
team designed a great radio to begin with, and made sure it was good
before
they released it, and the mods are more to accommodate a lot of the
options

that came later. I am doing OK in the Foxhunts and don't want to change a
good thing. In other words, I don't want to chance messing up the rig
right

now. ;.)

If the performance problem was on CW, perhaps your friend's sn 5** rig was
not aligned correctly originally.

Subject: [Elecraft] Questions from a Possible Builder/Owner

I've only been licensed about three years but have
been building electronic kits and related hardware
since 1954. My intent is to build a K2/100 with most
of the bells and whistles but have been unable to find
specific answers to three questions.

1. How does the K2/100 key an RF amplifier (AL-811)?
I have a Heil footswitch with a second cable for
amplifier keying. But, would prefer to use keying
from the rig itself.

Just use the keying output from the KPA100, I'm sure you remember putting
in the FET and RCA Jack for it.

2. How is ALC sent from my RF amplifier back to the
K2/100? I've reviewed the K2/100 manuals and cannot
find how it is done. Maybe it really isn't needed.

There is no ALC and most operators don't have a problem with it.

3. How do I adapt my Heil Headset Pro and Goldline
microphones. They currently are used with an
IC-746pro by using a Heil adapter cable. They now go
thru a homebrew switchbox with the adapter cable
between the rig and switchbox.
Why not make a cable to go from your switchbox to the K2 for the basic K2
jack wiring (all the jumper posts directly across), if you need bias
voltage for the mics you probably already created it in your switch box,
if you didn't you can create it from the K2 as per the instructions
included with any of the Heil mics from Elecraft.

I cannot see any other major problems. I've wound
baluns and view winding toroids a bit tedious but
there is nothing like "rolling your own." My
background includes professional soldering training
and experience. I have a scope, DVM and other minor
pieces of test equipment. Am I over looking any major
areas that need to be covered before starting?

You're pretty much ready to go, I also used a Service Monitor to do
receiver and transmitter alignment and freq. setting but it's really not
required.

Thank you for your response.

Jim, AB0UK

Fw: [Elecraft] IO Problem

2004-12-23 Thread Gregg R. Lengling

The KAT100 does not use the Serial Port to talk to the K2 it uses the
AuxBus. When you assembled it and put the cables together they were some
instructions that told you to be careful as to not plug the cable that is
the serial into the KAT100 or the KAT100 cable to a serial port as you
will blow out the RS232 chip. Maybe you unintentionally hooked up the
wrong cable one day and blew the chip.

Subject: [Elecraft] IO Problem

I have an unusual problem may some one can help with

My K2/100 has stopped talking to my computer.

I have tried 2 computers thinking it was the serial port but no

I redid the cable and still nothing

Finally I changed the amp lid with the QRP lid and it all works fine.

I have a KAT 100 tuner as well and the rig does talk to the tuner and
everything on the amp and tuner works. ie power, tune, antenna switching.
The rig just doesnt talk to the computer. Like I said it works with the
IO on the qrp lid and the settings on the computers are correct and the IO
is on on both the KIO and the K100

Any thoughts

If you use HamRadioDeluxe for computer control you'll see it on your screen.

Not me. I just wish the K2 displayed the selected filter all the
time... Of course, that would require more display room.

Can anyone advise how well the Heil ProSet-K2 headphones fit big head
sizes (eg. 64 cm or US head size 8)?
