What I find interesting is their using the government supplied scanning
equipment for free to remove any personnel alcohol, and increase their
profit margin.75$ for a 7$ bottle of wine?! Along with the sub standard
entertainment on board, bad food, etc. I avoid cruises like the plague.

Yes, RC prohibits amateur radio gear, but will happily sell you personal
walkie talkies at the gift shop to talk to your far-flung mates on board ...
perhaps the same thought as prohibiting bringing your own liquor on board.

Going on a cruise in a few months, so I emailed the cruise line about operating
at sea with a KX2. Here is the reply: “Ham Radios, Shortwave Radios or
Satellite Radios (portable or standalone) may not be brought on board as they
pose a risk of interfering with onboard navigational equipment.” OK! The line
has a right to say no. But...

I have operated my KX2 QRP 40m portable with a GPS and Laptop in the
transmission RF envelope with no interference problems. I know maritime uses
mostly 156-162 MHz for ship to ship or ship to shore, some specific HF
frequencies (outside of our bands) are allocated for emergency communications
and satellite navigation is typically 1150-1610 MHz. Most ships now have WiFi
and rely on phone apps for on-board communication, so there are a few thousand
phones on board operating in the GHz range that are no problem. Also, as a USN
Sub Service vet I learned a few things about at-sea comms 40-some years ago,
and considering the improvements in our technology...

Sorry if I seem to be ranting, but opportunities to operate at sea (for a OM in
Ohio) are rare and this cruise line’s position seems to me to be the easy
answer: ban all Hams outright.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 VFO-B knob replacement notes

Hi,

Recently I purchased a K3 and found I need to give it some love as it
has been a bit behind on maintenance.

One of the issues is that the VFO B knob has cracked. This is Elecraft
part number E980090, listed as K3 spare part.

Unfortunately, that knob is no longer available, and here is where the
fun starts.

What is sent instead, is Elecraft part E980275. Both E980090 and E980275
are listed but only E980275 is available.
The replacement knob is smaller, the old knob is 1 3/8", the new knob is 1".

Just replacing the knob won't work because the felt washer sticks out.

Also, the encoder is too long and the new knob sticks out - the felt
washer doesn't work.

Called Elecraft sales and there is some confusion.

The errata of the build instruction of the K3S (not K3) explains what
has happened:
- The new knob is smaller
- it needs a different felt washer, replace E700033 with E700416
- the encoder needs an additional lock washer, E700150.
- So, if you order a replacement, order all of this and plan to have to
take the front panel apart.

None of this is on the elecraft website. I also did not find anything in
the reflector archives. And it's not in the K3 documentation, only the
K3S documentation.

This is kind of painful, since in addition to the price of the spare
parts I ordered to get the K3 up to date ($173) I spent $80 on shipping,
customs and postal admin overhead and I now find I have an incomplete
mod kit.

I will need to cut the wrongly-ordered felt washer to size and find a
replacement lock washer to make the encoder sink deeper to match the new
knob.. Again, this isn't listed in the spare parts on the website or on
the reflector; it is now documented on the reflector, at least.

Make sure the new version of WSJT-X still has the correct codec selected.
Also, Open the Windows volume control and check the
volume level for the codec

Went over all settings, still no TX. I even swapped out the USB cable. I
connected a IC-9100 I brought up here with me to use as a SAT radio backup
and after 5 minutes I had contacts on FT8. I think there is something wrong
with the KIO3B, looks like I will be calling Elecraft on Monday...

Having an issue with no USB TX audio. When in TX all I see is one bar on
the rf out meter, 0 ALC. Upon return to my summer home in NJ I started up my
K3 which was on remote duty for the winter. All is working well except the
USB audio CODEC TX. This all was working when I left. At first I expected
the new version of WSJT X, but I'm having the same problem with another
application. I went through the KIO3B install manual and everything is set
correctly. I'm running K3 firmware level 5.67, which I also updated to
assure no issues with the same version that was already installed. I
uninstalled the USB drivers and let the system re-install. I'm not
experiencing any normal SSB TX issues, the K3 transmits TX audio fine in SSB
voice mode. I'm thinking the KIO3B has an issue, possibly an loose internal
cabling issue? Anyone ever have this same issue? Anyone have any ideas?

FTdx9000 did not have identical receivers. All of yaesu's dual

In addition, the two receivers are not phase locked so they
suffer from platform motion as the local oscillators drift
relative to each other.

Make and break syndrome!

Either there was a connector that was not fully mated even though you
thought it was (something fouling a thread making it appear snug) or
some oxidation/schmutz on one of the mating surfaces.

I've experienced BOTH... it is maddening for sure. That's why I now put

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 and K3 SWR meters disagree

2018-06-03 Thread jeff griffin
The jumpers connectors were good quality, but are very old I think I built
them maybe 20 years ago. Anyway now I use better coax, and quality crimp on
connectors I use either Amphenol or the DX Engineering brand which seem to
me to be equal to the Amphenol brand. I'm not the type to pursue this
farther, I'm not going to dissect the connectors on the old jumpers, I'm
just going to throw them out. I have better things to do with my time :-)

Loose or poor quality PL-259. There are many which "look good" but are not.
Always snug PL-259 connectors on the SO-239 such they are a bit more than
finger tight. I use/have a pair of 4" Channel lock pliers on the desk.

I recently brought my KPA/KAT500 north for the summer and hooked up to my
trapped multiband fan dipole that I use here in NJ. I leave my K3 here for
remote use and use the amp at my winter home in Florida to use with my Flex
6500 with a Steppir Vertical antenna without the KAT500 tuner. When I got up
here I installed the KIO3B option. The install went well with no issues, all

The issue I'm having is an SWR difference between the KAT500 and the K3.
For example if I use the K3's internal tuner I can on a chosen frequency
achieve an SWR of 1/1. I the put the internal K3 tuner in bypass mode and
take the KAT500 out of bypass and set to auto. I then use the xmit button on
the K3 to create a tune signal to be sent to the KAT500. The K3 then shows a
1/1, the KAT500 about the same but the KPA500 which is in STBY mode shows
around 3/1. What this causes to happen is the Amp will fault out if I try to
use any power output. If I check the antenna with a trusted SWR meter I see
1.3/1 at the frequency of use. I upgraded the firmware in all the devices in

Jeff;

Do I understand that for the first test you are driving the antenna through
the KPA500 and KAT500 (with KAT500 in bypass)? If so, it makes a lot of
sense that you will see different SWR. The KPA and KAT are providing a
completely different load for the K3. The better test is to feed the antenna
directly from the K3 without the KPA and KAT in-line. I would expect you to
see a closer match at that point, although I doubt they will ever be
identical due to the differences in the directional couplers in the K3 vs
the KAT500 (and KPA500 for that matter).

Thanks for the reply Don. Tried that and didn't work, still have the SWR issue.
Tried the amp on a resonant frequency, and it still is showing a bad SWR, but
not bad enough to always fault.

Jeff,

Check the coax between the KPA500 and the KAT500. Make certain the
connectors are tight. Replace with a different coax if you have one.

You can always do a check on the KPA500 wattmeter by connecting a dummy
load to the KPA500 (no tuner).

I’ve seen Bill’s setup. 50 watts with a decent gain antenna (i.e. beam) is
equivalent to 800 watts with Bill’s antenna and QTH. He really has done an
outstanding job with the resources he has to work with.
Also remember, we are talking about a 4 to 5 db difference in power here. And
when you have pretty large mountains blocking your path to JA and EU, that 4db
of power can make a huge difference.
QTH and the antenna system really make a huge difference!

Exactly right. There's also the issue of finding monitors that will run on

What model number and have you actually tried them on the CM-500?

I tried a couple of the generic replacements with the CM-500 and was never
able to make them fit properly. Still have my original CM-500 without
earpads in the junk box until I find replacements that will fit. I'm about
to order the Koss replacements, but if I could get a higher quality version

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Upgrade Path to Satellite Work.

2017-07-28 Thread Jeff Griffin
Hi Jeff. It would be a lot cheaper, better, and easier then with your K3 to do
full duplex with two cheaper radios. Look at the SDR setups guys are now using
on the sats. Get something like an Icom 7200, 7000, 706, or any other
HF,2m,70cm multi band and mode radio and use the SDR for RX. This will get you
full duplex for less than a good used 910. Checking the AMSAT.org archives
would be a good place to start…

There is a built-in all mode Two Meter module for the K3 that you could install
(K144XV).

For 70CM, the only option for use with a K3 that I’m aware of are transverters.
Elecraft offers transverters for various bands (See:
http://www.elecraft.com/XV/XV.htm ) or look
at product offerings from Down East Microwave.

See: http://www.downeastmicrowave.com/category-s/1836.htm

Elecraft doesn’t offer a 1.2 GHz capability but Down East Microwave does.
However, until Fox-1C and Fox-1D are launched, there aren’t any L-Band uplink
capable amateur satellites currently in service. Fox-1C is manifested to fly
on a SpaceX Falcon-9 SSO-A launch from Vandenberg AFB in early 2018 Fox-1D is
currently expected to fly on a PSLV launch from the launch complex at Satish
Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, India in late 2017.

Re: [Elecraft] SVGA monitor for P3

2016-12-28 Thread Jeff Griffin
Well Don, this whole quest started when I started using Flex radios
alongside my K3. I was running an original LP-Pan with NaP3 s/w happily for
years. I bought a fullduplex FlexRadio VU5K to use on Satellites and found
that I had problems trying to run two copies of PowerSDR simultaneously in
the same PC. As I had no room to setup another PC up here, something had to
go. It was the LP-Pan , soundcard setup. I then purchased a P3 to replace
it. The P3 is fine but I desired a larger panadaptor display for HF, but I
don't even have a lot of room for another monitor. That's where I'm at
right now. On the advise of Tom I found an open box Epiphan vga2usb on ebay.
I made an offer of about 1/2 the cost of a new one and it was excepted. I
should have it in a few days. If it doesn't work as expected, I can give it
to my son for his gaming system. Merry Christmas...

What I don't understand about this is why would anyone want to buy a P3
then use its IF out to drive a LP-Pan? The text decode stuff?

Jeff,

For about the same price as a VGA capture device, you may want to consider
an LP-Pan2. Connect it to the P3 IF out and connect LP-Pan2 to a good
quality soundcard.
Running NaP3 or Win4K3 on the computer will give you a panadapter display in
a resizable window.

The text decode area of the SVGA display will not be present, but then I do
not know what you want to see from the SVGA option.

I understand your reaction, but don’t think this one is due to anything at
Elecraft. If you have a “My UPS” type of account with UPS, then you will
receive that kind of email from UPS automatically no matter who initiates the

I’ve also been surprised and mystified on occasion when I get that notice when

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Customer Service

2016-12-25 Thread Jeff Griffin
I'm glad this went better for you Bill. I gave my wife a Christmas list with
several items on it. One item was a add-on board for my P3. She explained
when ordering it from Elecraft that it was a gift, and was assured that it
would be treated as such. A day before we got to our home up north where we
were spending Christmas, I got an email at the hotel we were staying at. UPS
sent an email that my order from Elecraft was delivered. I thought out loud
for a minute, I didn't order anything, but then realized what it was. My
wife was a bit upset

Merry Christmas to All!

I just opened a Christmas gift from my lovely wife Judy to find a K-Pod
inside. This was quite a surprise since I had forgotten I suggested I
wanted one. I also ordered one as part of a larger order and noted it was
"backordered" just after she place her order.

She received a call from Elecraft Customer Support pointing out we had both
ordered the same item and if they should ship both. She explained "no" and
thus my backorder.

Where else could you find such great customer support along with such fine
products? We all know the answer.

I don't actually have a K3/0-mini (I have the full-size K3/0), but I do believe
that you should be able to connect to it with the K3 Utility - that's how you
would update its firmware.

It may be that something has failed inside he K3/0-mini ... or something
software in Windows regarding COM ports. If you have access to another PC, you
might try the K3 Utility there.

[Elecraft] K3/0 control not working with DXLap or N1MM

2016-09-09 Thread Jeff Griffin
I just got back down here where the K3/0 is located. So Iain, your saying I
should be able to talk to the K3/0 with the K3 utility at the control site?
I just tried it and no, it doesn't see it on either of the two defined
comports. I even brought a second USB cable to use between the laptop and
K3/0. No Joy.

This worked for over a year, and just stopped. No changes were made to any
of the systems

Jeff, can the K3 Utility talk to your K3/0-mini (when no other

software is attempting to do so)? That will tell you if the problem is

with the COM port plumbing or the DXLab Suite config.

port with DXLab Commander anymore. All else is working remotely, only
problem is I can't control anything with my laptop, this all used to work. I
haven't used my remote system in awhile, but last time it worked fine. I'm
thinking maybe the FTDI driver got updated via win10. I'm at FTDI 2.12.18.0,
I think this is the right level. There are no errors reported in any of the
comport properties menu's. When I plug the USB cable in, com ports 5 and 6
appear in the device manager list. All looks normal. My DXLab commander
setup is. K3, com 5(I also tried 6),38400{same as K3/0),8,N,2,Y,Y.
interrogate and enable are checked.

Anyone have any ideas, and can someone verify what level FTDI driver there
using that works. Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 K POD macros

2016-07-20 Thread Jeff Griffin
Thanks to all for the macro help. Like a good boy I found the time to read
more slowly through the programmers reference and all is now well. Only
problem I have now is trying to remember what macro is associated with what
button, and is it tap or hold???

73 Jeff kb2m

I'm happily writing some macros for my K Pod and not finding a way to access
front panel controls like M1. Is there a way to access M1 from the K POD?
Also does anyone have a macro to share that emulates a band select function?
Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 K144XV for sale

I forgot to mention that it is the module for the 100 watt K3. I also have
the FM/AM filter, KFL3B-FM available separately for $90 shipped, or included
for $80...

I have a little used K144XV 2m internal module for sale. It is working
perfectly, I just never use it and as I have my K3 apart doing the K3s
upgrades I decided it's a good time to offer it for sale. $275.00 shipped,
insured US. I will also ship overseas, pre-paid, shipping actual additional
cost. I will out of convience, also include the KREF3MDKT mod in the sale.

[Elecraft] K3 commander issue

2014-04-07 Thread Jeff Griffin

I noticed that when I switch frequency from a USB to an LSB one or visa
versa on my K3 by clicking on a spot, or a memory in memory bank 1, the K3
changes to the right mode for an instant then goes back to the mode it was
in. I tested this with my 7100 and Commander operates correctly. I just
moved my K3 to this location from my other home and there I never noticed
this problem. I also recently added an Elecraft KAT500 and KPA500 to the mix
and maybe this caused the issue? Anyway it has caused me to be in the wrong
mode on several occasions and would like to fix this. I tried to mess with
the command interval and scan dwell in the commander config to no avail.
Does anyone running the same setup have/had this problem? Anyone have a
clue? Need more info?

Jeff,

I watched this nthread for a while and saw a dozen or so responses, but
no-one bothered to help you with a macro or two. It seems that everyone has
opinions on what mic or jack and maybe which fingefr to use to press the
ON.

But, as for the macros, here goes.

These are old, but you can see what I have done and adjust accordingly.
Good luck!

TO set mic to front for Hiel HM10-Dual

Name: -MicFP

Macro:  MG020;CP020;MN053;DN;DN;TE-03-03+00+00+03+03+00+00;SWT11;

ASSIGN TO PF1

This will set gain to 20, the compression to 20, set mic to front, adjust TX
Equalization and set range to H

To set rear for YAMAHA CM500

Name: -MicRPl

Macro:  MG017;CP005;MN053;DN;DN;UP;TE+00+00+00+03+03+03+03+03;SWT11;

ASSIGN TO PF2

This will set gain to 17, compression to 5, set mic to rear, adjust TX
Equalization and set range to L

NOTE:'

The setting for range H or L is a toggle. If you press the same function
key twice, it will toggle the range. Therefore these macros leave the Main
Menu active to show the Front/Rear and Range setting. Just press the MENY
butoon and you are ready to go. If the range is wrong, just press keypad #1
to toggle to the other setting.

Re: [Elecraft] kat/kpa500 cable

2014-03-03 Thread Jeff Griffin
Thanks for all the suggestions on and off list. I bought a VGA extension
cable at Best Buy thinking it would be straight through. When I got it home
I found 4 or 5 of the 15 pins were shorted together. I returned the cable
and then went to radio shack looking for a couple of DB-15's, to make my own
cable. Nope. I'm sure I have some DB-15's at my summer home that's 62 miles
away, and if I was there I would just build the needed cable. But at this
point I just ordered the cable from Elecraft, rather then the one suggested
from another vender. Thanks again for all the constructive(and one not so
constructive :-) ) suggestions...

Re: [Elecraft] CES2014 micro power supply

2014-01-10 Thread Jeff Griffin
Well I've had my Gamma for maybe 5 years, used it with several brands of
transceivers, and don't do anything stupid like try to run RTTY, FM, or AM
modes at full power, or run excessive speech processing. I do run PSK31 a
lot when operating with it, but only at 30 watts or so. This is all common
sense. I have never heard the fan, it is quiet. I don't have it here right
now(it is at my summer home) but I think there is a CE or UL sticker on it,
or both. I have experienced NO problems. Depending on your operating habits
YMMV...

Interesting...

Your radio uses power only 35% of the time when transmitting CW, and about
25% during normal Voice SSB operation.

But a lot higher percentage if you run RTTY or some other digimodes. Or you
have a lot of speech processing and play with contests!

(They do an adapter from Molex to PP anyway for the DC side.)

Like your contrymen say about automotive stuff. There's no substitute for
Cube's if you want power.

Take care peep's. There's no mention of CE, FCC or UL (safety) approvals,
or if
there is any over-voltage protection (for your expensive radio, and/or other
DC powered kit.)

I suspect too, that small fan might make an anoying noise. (If it shifts
enough air to do any good.)

Re: [Elecraft] Icom 7100 and KAT500/KPA500 PTT issues

2013-11-08 Thread Jeff Griffin
I got a chuckle out of this. After trying to figure out how to hook up the
AMP to the 7100 I must have been having a senior moment. I built the
interface described in the Icom manual and thought I can't believe I never
had to do this before as I owned several Icom HF transceivers over the
years. After getting it up and running I later visited my other home where I
have all my radio spare parts, junk, etc, I went through the interface cable
junk box and found *TWO* complete working 13 pin to ALC, and PTT cables.
What is scary is I don't remember building them or ever using them. I'm
turning 65 in a few days, please this is not going to get worse :-)

The 4-wire AH4 connection doesn't PTT key the amp. It has 12v, ground,
Start, which is a signal from the Icom to the tuner that is asserted when
you press the Icom tune button, and ah4 key, which is asserted by the tuner
when it needs a tune level signal from the Icom. The amp needs a separate
PTT key line from the Icom RCA connector to the kat500, and another RCA
cable from kat500 to amp. The AH4 Key line is distinct from exciter to amp
PTT and although both have key in their names, they have different purposes.

One of our diagrams in the owners manual may have omitted the RCA keying
cables. A manual revision is in the works.

73 de Dick, K6KR

Thanks for the info Dick. The use of the word KEY in the Icom description
of pin 1 was confusing me. Your explanation makes this much clearer now. I
also got a reply on this offlist and was told they got their 7100
KAP500/KAT500 setup working with the interface explained in the IC-7100
advanced instruction manual page 2-11. In addition to wiring the PTT OUT
circuit, you also must configure H-SEND in the SET CONNECTIONS menu (page
17-26). Also found on page 19-11 is a simple mod to output the band
information. I'm not sure how this would be used with the Elecraft pair
without building another cable. We will look into this later, unless someone
has tried already.
So I think we can say the Icom transcerivers with AH-4 ATU interface
description on page 8, and figure 3 in the the KAT500 tuner manual would be
in error if all Icom AH-4 interfaces are the same ?

[Elecraft] KAT500/KPA500 with Icom 7100

2013-11-06 Thread Jeff Griffin
I brought my KAT500/KPA500 setup to my winter home after getting it put
together and working with my K3 at my shore residence. Now I'm trying to get
it working with my Icom 7100. After setting up the Elecraft pair, only menu
item I see to set is in the KPA500, RADIO, set to ANALOG. I'm having two
problems.
1. I'm not getting PTT to activate. I checked the AH-4 interface cable and
it has the correct pinout. If I ground the center pin of the RCA PTT cable
the AMP keys as expected. The problem is the 7100 isn't grounding pin one.
Does anyone know if there a config command in the 7100 to activate this? I
can't find anything. When you key up the 7100 the pin stays open and not to
ground as I think it should be doing.
2. I'm not getting any band switching with this setup. If I click on a spot
with DXLab I would expect the Elecraft pair to follow the 7100, I'm thinking
if problem 1 is fixed problem 2 will also be ?

All other AH-4 functions seem to be working ok. The cable powers the KAT500,
and If I hit the tune button on the 7100 the KAT500 obeys.

Coolaid drinkers, yes I know if I replace the 7100 with another K3 my
troubles will be over :-)
