[Elecraft] Elecraft support

2011-01-20 Thread John H Gibson
Dear Fellow Elecrafters,

I am writing to report on my experience with Elecraft support.

My K3 (820) recently developed a perplexing and irritating behavior: as I would
tune in a cw signal, I would come across a frequency very near the CWT center
frequency where the signal’s tone would disappear, and I would hear only key
clicks. This was a very sharp null, and I would hear a good tone either side of
it.

I contacted Elecraft support, and Gary walked me through checking for obvious
problems, like whether I had the notch filter engaged (I did not). Then he
shared the problem with Lyle, who suggested that such a null could occur if I
had set SPKRS=1, and AFX was turned on.

I use only one speaker, so I did have SPKRS=1. And with mono headphones, I have
no need for AFX, but I found that it was turned on. I would not intentionally
have turned it on, but I often do direct frequency entries, and I must have
erroneously hit the AFX/Enter key with multiple presses or poor timing.

I turned off AFX and the problem disappeared.

But this story is less about my problem and its solution than it is about the
energetic and competent support I received from Elecraft. Gary was prompt in
responding to my request for help, and he also was quick to call in Lyle to be
sure that appropriate expertise was brought to the problem. And I noticed that
all correspondence was copied to Wayne, so that he was in the loop as well.

I could not have asked for better support.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 headphones

2009-08-24 Thread John H Gibson
A couple of years ago I decided that I wanted new headphones, so I checked
ratings on eHam and bought a pair that featured a frequency response tailored
for
communications use.

When I tried the new headphones, I found them comfortable to wear, but it soon
became apparent that they exacerbated noisy band conditions; it was like
listening in a rain barrel. I then set the new headphones aside and went back
to a
much older pair with a nominally flat frequency response that I find much
easier
to listen to.

Re: [Elecraft] Need a kit recomendation (off topic a little)

2009-07-24 Thread John H Gibson
Hi Alan,

Please consider MFJ's 8100K regenerative receiver kit. It provides reasonable
shortwave performance, and its regeneration control can be adjusted for ssb
and cw reception. The radio's open layout makes it a good kit for beginners,
and the $80 price includes a nice case. The kit assembly even requires the
winding of one toroid.

I used to teach an Introduction to Radio course for liberal arts students,
most
of whom had never before seen a soldering iron. They had a ball building these
radios, and the few radios that did not work when first turned on were easy to
troubleshoot.

FD is about how to put several transmitters in a 1000 foot circle

For an excellent documentary about the Conejo Valley AD6T Field Day operation

Dave,

I wanted to run a possible solution past you.

I could prevent the rig from being keyed (by any method) during the
first couple of seconds that it's powered up. Instead, it could detect
this case, and display a repeating message (something like: KEYLINE IS
ACTIVE) until you either remove the source of the keying or turn power
off.

Thoughts on this?

 cable.

Everything works fine, but I got quite a scare when I turned
on the K3 and it came up keyed-down 120 watts into no
antenna. It seems that if the laptop is not running the
logging program, rs-232 pin 4 can very well be in a key-down
 state.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] AFX operation

2008-06-24 Thread John H Gibson
Hi Lyle,

Thank you for your explanation of how AFX works; I now better understand how
AFX currently behaves. While listening to cw, I find that increasing DELAY
shifts
the apparent source of a cw signal further to the left, which makes me believe
that AFX delays the right stereo channel.

AFX does provide a nice spatial sense of the sound (albeit with sound sources
shifted to the left of center). I know that your plate is full right now, but I
was
pleased to hear that you are thinking of a a future AFX with that spatially
locates
a sound source based on its pitch.

The K3 does not provide a space based on pitch which is apparently
what you were expecting. That effect is on the list of things to
consider for the future.

BIN provides a fixed phase shift between the two channels.

DLY provides a fixed (but user selectable) time delay between the two
channels. I use DLY 3. Wayne prefers DLY 5.

This is *all* what we call psychoacoustics, mainly because we like to
use 5 syllable words to impress :-) Different listeners react in
different ways to these settings. There is no correct one; use what you
prefer, including OFF.

[Elecraft] [K3] AFX operation

2008-06-23 Thread John H Gibson
I have recently begun experimenting with my K3's AFX feature. My understanding
is that AFX is supposed to spread cw signals across a virtual listening space
in
front of the operator (distributed according to pitch?). My experience,
listening
with stereo headphones and with AFX on, is that all of the sound seems to come
from one side and slightly to the rear. With AFX off I hear a balanced sound
from
the headphones that seems to be in the center of my head.

This is not what I expected. What am I doing wrong?

[Elecraft] MFJ-4125 Fan Noise

2008-06-01 Thread John H Gibson
Question for the List:

I recently bought an MFJ-4125 switching power supply to use with my K3/100
transceiver. While otherwise satisfactory, the MFJ-4125 has an objectionably-
noisy fan.

On my MFJ-4125, over half of the fan exhaust openings on the back of the
supply are blocked by the fan's motor housing, which makes me believe that the
power supply originally was designed for a different fan (perhaps a quieter
one),
and this fan is an expedient substitute by MFJ.

I would like to know if other users also are bothered by the MFJ-4125's fan
noise, and what they have done about it.

Have you substituted a quieter fan? Have you installed a series resistor to
slow
down the fan, and with what result? Have you installed a thermostatic switch to
run the fan only when needed? Or have you given up and simply bought a
quieter power supply?

Any advice would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] K3 band switch clutter

2008-05-31 Thread John H Gibson
Question for the list:

On my K3 (SN 820) I have noticed that if I tune to frequencies between the ham
bands (e.g. WWV frequencies), these frequencies then show up when I step the
band switch up and down. Is there a way to delete this out-of-the-ham-band
clutter from the band switch's operation?

My K3 still has the version 1.78 control firmware that it came with.

2008-05-31 Thread John H Gibson
Don,

Thank you for your excellent advice (as always).

I am aware of the other methods of jumping to the ham bands, i.e. direct
frequency entry and setting up memory pushbuttons. I merely wanted to know
what I could do about the band switch itself, and you gave me a satisfactory
answer to my question.

John,

That behavior will be corrected, I know it is on the list. I recall that there
has
been discussion about just where inside the ham band the band button will
place the K3 - i.e. if you tune out of the band at the bottom end, return to
the
lowest frequency in the band? if you tune out the top of the ham band, then do
you return to the top of the band? Or should it return someplace else -
everyone will of course have their favorite answer on this one.

Until it is settled and is coded into firmware, Direct Frequency Entry will get
you
back into the ham band. If you have set up a memory for the ham band in
question, a tap of the MV button will do it - both these solutions are easier
than twisting the VFO knob until it is back in the ham band.

[Elecraft] Rose Kopp's carrying cases and covers

2008-05-18 Thread John H Gibson
As the owner of a new K3 (SN 820), I was looking for a way to protect it while
traveling (by car), so I wrote to Rose Kopp, N7HKW, at [EMAIL PROTECTED],
and she responded by sending me a detailed description of her carrying cases
accompanied by color photographs of different color cases and embroidered text
patterns. I ordered one, which she made and sent promptly, and I am delighted
with the result. It is elegant and offers excellent protection, and it meets my
need
perfectly.

I then ordered a dust cover from her, and I am happy with it too.

I have no connection with Rose's sewing business; I just am very pleased with

I had the same problem until I studied the right-hand photograph at the top of

It's 0444 EDT and I think it's time to go to bed. I'm just short of the
first power on test and I'm going to get some rest before taking that
step. Tomorrow is another day.

I didn't realize that items of this quality were available to
consumers. Fit and finish are remarkable. There's quality in
everything from button pushing feedback to structuring the assembly
process. I used to build some Heath and have written a few instruction
manuals along the way and this instruction set is really excellent.

I have only hit one snag so far: I received only 3 out of 4 #4 fiber
washers and I was short 3 screws. All but the washer were in the Spares
Kit. I'll be letting support know if or when I hit a road block. So
far...I'm having a whole lot of fun developing pride of ownership.

[Elecraft] K3 VFO A tuning knob set screw

2008-05-03 Thread John H Gibson
I currently am assembling my new K3 #820 and have reached the step where I
need to mount the VFO A tuning knob. I am unable to advance the knob's set
screw far enough to clamp the knob to the shaft and am considering running a
tap
in and out of the hole to clean up the thread.

Does anyone know the diameter and thread pitch of this set screw? If I hold the
screw against an 8-32 tap, it seems to fit, but I am worried that it might be a
metric thread instead.

John, no8v

RE: [Elecraft] K3 VFO A tuning knob set screw

2008-05-03 Thread John H Gibson
Hello Thomas,

I can use the allen wrench to extract the set screw from the VFO A knob. When I
hold the set screw against my 8-32 tap, the threads mesh, and the diameters
appear to be the same.

Even though the set screw thread meshes with that of my 8-32 tap, the set
screw is not long enough to make me feel certain that they are the same, rather
than merely being close. I am not familiar enough with nominal metric threads
to know whether there is one that is close to 32 threads/inch.

There is an identical set screw in the VFO B knob. Either set screw will thread
easily into the VFO B knob, but either set screw will go just so far and then
bind
in the VFO A knob.

Hi John,

i am living in 'metric land' and i'm shure this is not metric. I had to use
the alan wrench delivered with the K3.
Can you see the screw if you look 'into' the knobs hole for the shaft ?

Never heard about issues with this item.

I now can report that I took the bull by the horns and used my 8-32 tap to
clean up the set-screw threads in the VFO A knob. The 8-32 set screw then
went in smoothly, and the VFO A knob now is mounted on the VFO A shaft
encoder.

I ran intro a different problem with the VFO knob. The knob would not fit on
the
shaft, and I also could not insert a 1/4 drill bit shank into the knob. I then
used
a 1/4 drill bit to gently ream out the knob, and it now is mounted on the VFO
B
shaft encoder.

Thanks to Thomas, Vic, and Windy who were kind enough to respond to my
request for help.

[Elecraft] K3 #820 arrives in Alma, MI.

2008-05-01 Thread John H Gibson
To All on the LIst:

K3 #820 (kit) arrived at my home in Alma, Michigan, today (May 1). I placed my
order last November 2 and received my Katiegram in mid-April. Because I was
away from home at the time, I asked to have shipping temporarily delayed.

Now doing the parts inventory.

Re: [Elecraft] OT - Heath CW Twins

2007-10-06 Thread John H Gibson
Hello David,

Chuck Penson's excellent book, HEATHKIT: A GUIDE TO THE AMATEUR RADIO
PRODUCTS, 2nd Ed., lists both the HR-1680 and the HX-1681. According to
Chuck, the HR-1680 was released in the Fall of 1967, but the HX-1681, which
initially was advertised as coming soon, was plagued with problems and not
released until the summer of 1979.

Continuing Chuck's comments, early HX-1681s had key-click problems, and
Heath provided a free modification to owners to remedy this. This modification
was included in later-production HX-1681s. A modification to solve the key-
click appeared in the March, 1981, QST. Eventually the HX-1681 was pulled
from production a year earlier than the HR-1680.

Chuck further says that, the both the HR-1680 and the HX-1681 use plug-in
circuit cards, and the card-edge connectors are subject to oxidation over time.
These connector contacts may need periodic cleaning.

Overall, Chuck Penson has kinder things to say about the HR-1680 than he does
about the HX-1681.

I hope this is helpful

Jim, N2EY, is correct; the 1967 is a typo on my part. Chuck Penson states that
the HR-1680 was released in the Fall of 1976.

RE: [Elecraft] Miniature screwdriver sizes

2007-09-07 Thread John H Gibson
Mike:

Last week I spotted a neat 4-in-1 miniature screwdriver for sale at the
checkout
counter of the local hardware store. It is about the size of a Sharpie marking
pen
and has a pocket clip. Included are two very small flat-bladed screwdrivers and
two very small Phlllips. The case is a tough plastic, but the reversible bits
are
metal and appear to be precision ground. The price was only $3, and I could not
resist. I am very pleased with my purchase.

The label on it says Enderes Tools. I could not find this particular tool on
their
web site, but an internet search did turn it up on eBay. I expect it is being
marketed as a promotional item.

I'm in need of a very small phillips screwdriver, but haven't been able to find
actual dimensions of them and I don't know what size a #0 would be, etc. I
thought someone on this board might have some advice. The slots in these
screws are .064 or 1.63mm. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

[Elecraft] OT: Keying contacts

2007-07-28 Thread John H Gibson
On the topic of keys, paddles, and bugs, I wonder if members of the list would
tell
me how they keep key contacts clean and reliable. Do you regularly burnish key
contacts? Do you use a chemical cleaner (e.g. de-oxit)? Do you maintain a
minimum keying current? Or do you simply never have a problem?

Please share your wisdom and experience.

[Elecraft] Crystal Clear book

2007-06-12 Thread John H Gibson
I just finished reading a book, CRYSTAL CLEAR, by Richard J. Thompson Jr. The
book presents the fascinating history of the World-War-II effort to provide
crystal frequency control for military radios. This was critically important,
because radios without crystal control drifted badly, which made net operation
difficult and also made it impossible to assign closely-spaced radio channels.

The book was announced in the New Book section of the June 2006 QST. The
book's author had written a nice summary article on the same topic that
appeared in the January 2004 QST.

I make mention of the book here because I know that many members of the
Elecraft list have long memories and share my fascination with radio's
technical
history. (Like Ron, AC7AC, I too remember Edward R. Murrow's reports from
London during the Blitz.)

I do not know Professor Thompson, and I have no vested interest in the sale of
his book.

[Elecraft] All-band folded dipoles

2007-02-19 Thread John H Gibson
Here is what L.B. Cebik says on the topic of all-band folded dipoles.

A lot of them have been replaced by the now-ubiquitous BW All
Band Folded Dipole - the same antenna that I use in an open-V
configuration. It works equally flat over the HF (1.8-30 MHz)
  spectrum.
