No, no, no!! The modern, HI-Tech way to do it is to build up a circuit to charge at least a 10 F supercap and discharge it through the fuse, thereby clearing the short. The supercap is guaranteed to un-short almost any fuse you are likely to find, and could also be handy for jump starting your car if using 12v to charge it. Just be sure your charging circuit can stand the guff, those things take a heck of a jolt without charge current limiting!!! Tongue firmly in cheek, W4CWZ No need for a trip to the store. Re: [Elecraft] OT: fan control in MFJ-4225MV switching P/S
Just a thought here... There are many fans for computers which have a thermal control for the fan speed built in. I suspect it's just a temperature-variable resistor in series with the power lead. This could be a viable alternative for cooling of almost any thing which needs it, and these things are cheap. Look for phrases like thermally controlled, temperature controlled etc. With just a bit of searching, one can also find fans listed as silent. Many sellers of these fans list the sound level in DB, which makes comparison easy, they almost always list RPM and CFM specs as well. Also a variety of sizes from 40mm to 120mm and more. Try Cooler Guys http://www.coolerguys.com/, NewEgg http://www.newegg.com/, Xoxide http://www.xoxide.com/casefans.html? just to name a few. Hope this may help. 73, John W4CWZ Alan Bloom wrote: Yes, I expect a voltage regulator would work better than a resistor to drop the voltage. Only real complaint is that it has captive test leads and if one fails it would require ripping into the unit to repair it. Better to use a drop of Super Glue or similar after the connectors are dovetailed together. The clip made to hold sets together is a great idea, although it does add to the expense. [Elecraft] WARNING
Be careful ordering from Futurlec. I have been going round-and-round with them for well over 2 months now and have still not received my order. All I get is lies and excuses. I am on the verge of disputing the charge with my bank, having given them an ultimatum. 73 de John AI4JH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Soldering Stn Bites the Dust...Time to Replace
I just got a Xytronic Auto-temp 136 ESD which I'm already quite fond of. Uses same tips as Hakko, but only cost (If I recall) 70.00 from Circuit Specialists. Or have I managed to miss something? 73 de John AI4JH Jeremiah McCarthy wrote: Actually, silver bearing solder has a lower melting temperature than 63/37 tin/lead solder...63/37 melts at 361 degrees...The silver bearing solder that McMaster-Carr sells is listed at 354 degrees, almost 100 degrees cooler than 63/37, and is called low melting point solder...It's composition is 62% tin, 35.75% lead, 2% silver, 0.25% antimony, and it has a multi-flux core...It meets J-STD-006 federal specs, which is the same as 63/37 and tells me it safe to use...It costs about $10 a pound more than 63/37 and seems ideal for SMT... Re: FW: [Elecraft] RF build up
Alan, I think you may have unwittingly hit on one explanation for Long Delayed Echos. All those CW characters freeze on the antenna and stay there untill a thaw, then they melt and radiate(at least some do, many may just drip onto the ground). Then, you hear them and think, AHA,an LDE!!. Re: [Elecraft] OT: SMT kits?
Who needs an expensive soldering station for SMT? I've built a couple of SMT projects with a standard soldering station (using a fine tip)with no problem. If one looks for excuses, one can find them, and never do or learn anything new! There are many cheap and easy tricks for SMT work, if one only cares to look a bit! 73 de John N4FLJ - Original Message - From: Sandy W5TVW [EMAIL PROTECTED] One reason I don't care with SMD stuff, is the cost of proper soldering gear for them!
