I use a Dell Venue 8 Pro and like many new tablets and phones it uses
USB On The Go for connectivity. Dell sells this:

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=usl=ens=bsdcs=04sku=470-ABES#Overview

and it allows what you need. USB OTG negotiates charging and data
according to a set of rules which I have not figured out yet, need to
research that sometime! No connection to Dell other than a satisfied
user. I'm sure this is available other places as well.

Re: [Elecraft] R

2014-12-03 Thread John Payne
No, no, no!! The modern, HI-Tech way to do it is to build up a
circuit to charge at least a 10 F supercap and discharge it through the
fuse, thereby clearing the short. The supercap is guaranteed to
un-short almost any fuse you are likely to find, and could also be handy
for jump starting your car if using 12v to charge it. Just be sure your
charging circuit can stand the guff, those things take a heck of a jolt
without charge current limiting!!!

No need for a trip to the store. You can clear a shorted fuse by
connecting a battery across it. Works every time.

[Elecraft] ESSB and the rules

2009-09-28 Thread John Payne
N2DTS: I don't understand why some people like to limit other
peoplesactivity, or choices.

Excerpted from FCC rules Part 97:

§97.307 Emission standards.

(a) No amateur station transmission shall occupy more bandwidth than
necessary for the information rate and emission type being transmitted,
in accordance with good amateur practice.

(b) Emissions resulting from modulation must be confined to the band or
segment available to the control operator. Emissions outside the
necessary bandwidth must not cause splatter or keyclick interference to
operations on adjacent frequencies.

It's the law!! Minimum practical bandwidth, no splatter, no spurs. FCC
can and will cite stations for violations.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: fan control in MFJ-4225MV switching P/S

2008-08-06 Thread John Payne

Just a thought here...

There are many fans for computers which have a thermal control for the
fan speed built in. I suspect it's just a temperature-variable resistor
in series with the power lead. This could be a viable alternative for
cooling of almost any thing which needs it, and these things are cheap.
Look for phrases like thermally controlled, temperature controlled
etc. With just a bit of searching, one can also find fans listed as
silent. Many sellers of these fans list the sound level in DB, which
makes comparison easy, they almost always list RPM and CFM specs as
well. Also a variety of sizes from 40mm to 120mm and more. Try Cooler
Guys http://www.coolerguys.com/,

NewEgg http://www.newegg.com/,
Xoxide http://www.xoxide.com/casefans.html? just to name a few.

Hope this may help.

Alan Bloom wrote:

Yes, I expect a voltage regulator would work better than a resistor to

But you probably still want to use a thermostat or some other method to
switch the fan to full voltage if things get too hot.

Re: [Elecraft] Help me buy a DMM

2007-09-24 Thread John Payne

I lucked out several years ago at Sears and found a combination
digital/analog meter. Has all the usual DMM functions, plus an analog
movement. Wonderful for peaking, etc! Unfortunately, I think Sears has
discontinued it(naturally), haven't seen anything similar for quite some
time. Perhaps other sellers have something similar, but haven't noticed
one. Only real complaint is that it has captive test leads and if one
fails it would require ripping into the unit to repair it. In it's
favor, it does have a hard case/cover which can also act as a tilt stand.

Not much help at this point, but might be of interest to some.

Re: [Elecraft] bad choice: Anderson PowePole connectors

Our ARES group has standardized on the Anderson PPs and they
have been installed on all equipment used by our members.
I can't for the life of me understand the hatred some show of APPs.
Like any other connector, if installed PROPERLY and used for the
intended purpose, they do a great job. ANY connector can fail if
installed in a ham-handed manner, even the most expensive. My local
ARES group has standardized on these, and not just because the ARRL
said so, as some imply. They truly are a superior connector if
installed to manufacturers spec. Crimp or solder, your choice, although
if crimping is good enough for NASA, Boeing, McDonnell-Douglas et al,
it's good enough for me.

Also, the roll pins are NOT recommended by most sellers of APPs, nor
Anderson. They do not stay put, and can cause a disaster if they fall
into the wrong place(see Murphy's Law). Better to use a drop of Super
Glue or similar after the connectors are dovetailed together. The clip
made to hold sets together is a great idea, although it does add to the
expense.

BTW, RC modelers use APPs extensively with no trouble or unwanted
disconnects, and this is certainly a harsher environment than most of us
will use them in.

Just my 2 cents, now back in my hole!!

If it ain't broke don't fix it. With any modern email client one can
sort messages by thread, and filter out those one finds objectionable.
I find email less cumbersome than message board systems, which have no
filtering. I do agree that a message board can organize by topic,
thread or sender, but I just can not bring myself to like the system.
