[Elecraft] ERR TXG in 5W calibration mode
Just now updating an older K3 with 5.14 using an old winXP machine. The 50W cal went as expected, the 5w cal gives me an error message: ERR TXG. starting on 160. During calibration it only reaches 3.3W at 1.1:1 SWR. I can go an adjust to 5w and it reads 1.0:1 when using a manual key. Tried the calibration again at this point and it made it through 160 and hung on 3.750 MHz, same readings and issue. I can set the rig and run CW fine @ 5w. calibration doesn't work. Haven't tried going back to the old firmware, but see not reason the new FW shouldn't work. Any suggestions? Re: [Elecraft] K3 ERR TXF
I'd like to thank Dale, at Elecraft, for helping me work through this problem. Possibly the steps we went through may help someone who runs into a similar problem. Items in quotes are my thoughts/explanations. This is a first time issue for me, and I would consider it quite a rare occurrence based on my K3 experiences: (My problem started with a working, properly configured radio that suddenly started displaying "ERR TXF" when keyed in SSB. The radio worked correctly in CW. I suspect either or both of two things: fumble fingering the keys when trying to record new KDVR3 messages or a static spike. It is possible that these were strictly coincidental too.) The TXF error is a SOFTWARE issue, it has nothing to do with hardware. If you have confirmed that the 2.8 Khz filter is in the slot that it really is in (Slot #1 is the first slot on the right as you look down into the radio from front) and that in the CONFIG:FL 'n' BW the 'n' matches the slot number that the filter is in (if you have multiple filters then they must be arranged widest to narrowest in lowest slot number to highest slot number) along with CONFIG:FL TX SB being correct, then you may have a corrupt memory workspace. Do you know how to do a parameter initialization? That will correct the corruption. (This is EE INIT, follow instructions in the owner manual.) (My problem returned...) Are you reloading an older configuration after doing the EE INIT? If so, you need to manually reconfigure everything. The "glitch" can get saved in the configuration file. (By "manually reconfigure" he meant via the CONFIG Menu on the radio itself, NOT via the K3 Utility program.) (The sequence I followed was: 1) Hand copy all of my important parameters (assuming you're not using all the default values) 2) Perform "EE INIT". 3) Test to see if the problem was resolved. 4) Using the CONFIG Menu, re-enter all of my personal settings (filters, AGC and such). 5) Test again to see if the problem remained resolved. If it tests good 6) Erase all saved configurations for the radio in question in the K3 Utility Program. 7) Save to new working configuration. 8) Test again, heck if only for peace of mind. If good, pop open an 813 and do a little jig (wired jig preferred... hihi) ) 73, Julius - Julius Fazekas N2WN Tennessee Contest Group http://www.k4ro.net/tcg/index.html Tennessee QSO Party http://www.tnqp.org/ Elecraft K2#4455 Elecraft K3/100 #366 Elecraft K3/100 -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-ERR-TXF-tp7400316p7409532.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I've done that already Don. I've checked it via CONFIG and the Utility. The correct filter is selected, all the settings are correct. It was working fine, then this error popped up. [Elecraft] K3 ERR TXF
Made a couple SSB QSOs prior to the start of WPX and one QSO in the contest itself, but now am getting ERR TXF anytime I try to key the rig. Also, not getting any power out to speak of. the pre contest QSOs were LP, the first contest QSO QRP. Checked all the settings, both directly and with the utility, everything is set correctly. Tried a reboot, power recycle and reloading the firmware. Nada. Any method of keying in either SSB mode triggers the error message (PTT, VOX, DVR). I do have the KDVR3 in this rig, if that makes a diff... Looks like it works fine on CW, power moves from QRP to LP. Any suggestions? Re: [Elecraft] Annoying contests
*chuckles* It's funny to see the complaints after a major contest. (as long as I've been a ham) But recently I have heard complaints about EME (!?!) really... seems that the newfangled digital version has raised the cackles of some of the "traditionalists". Go figure. I know when the moon is low on the horizon and all round and aglow, I do ponder trying 6M EME. I think it would be pretty cool. Worked a couple of K2s (that I know about) and plenty of K3s over the weekend. Found folks up to 150 on some bands, and much less on others, and this with less stellar SF numbers than during CQWWDX. 20 had activity around the clock. 'Twas fun... and the K3 did a fine job as usual! (plenty of calls from here heard too!) The K3 does it all. And I, too, have had no problem keying the K3 from N1MM without a Winkey. In the Config menu, go to PTT-KEY. Rotate VFO A to choose OFF-DTR. (You can also choose any combination of DTR and RTS from the serial port to control PTT and Keying. See Table 3-12 in the KE7X book, if you have it). OFF-DTR means that there is no PTT control and the K3 will expect a keying signal on the serial port DTR signal. In N1MM (I can't speak for other programs), go to the CONFIGURER->HARDWARE and click the CW/Other Details box for the serial port you connected to the K3. Click on SET and make DTR be CW. That's it. The serial port will be the radio control interface and also will key the radio when N1MM sends CW. No LPT or any other keying interface needed. I haven't done it (no SSB contesting experience) but I suspect that the PTT capability can be use to key the radio when N1MM is being a voice keyer. For the K3, you do not "need" Winkeyer at all, and we're talking up to 40 WPM. You do need two ports. You can use the LPT port or USB to Serial adapter from your computer, or there are serial add-on cards to be had. N1MM generates CW. You will need to build/buy a very simple serial port keying interface to key the K3 from the program. It is in the N1MM start document, and I see there are a couple folks who have built little boards for CW/PTT/FSK for this purpose. Winkeyer may be a cost effective option, if you don't have a usable second port option. I traded my last built Winkeyer for an un-built kit and some aluminum tubing. The keyer is still unbuilt. The aluminum is in 40M vertical form ;o) Check the getting started with N1MM document, it explains a lot of this in easy to read details. One of the better start=up guides I've seen... I stand corrected Mitch. You are right, it can be done straight through the Serial (or USB to Serial) port. For some reason or another I was thinking of FSK... Re: [Elecraft] another contesting how-to question
Tim, Winkeyer is a great piece of equipment and was needed for the K2 after some changes to N1MM years back, due to timing issues. Hi Pat, Wound up using the same trick... Evidently N1MM use to be able to do it with the ESC key, but somewhere along the line the code was changed. Re: [Elecraft] [SECC] Mosley TH-3jr Weirdness
Rich, Suggest you look into silicone hose repair tape for the coax connection. Electrical tape tends to unwrap and/or leave a messy residue. This stuff can be found in the garden hose section. It's a bit more expensive, but does a great job. I've wrapped my Steppir Boots with it, great UV protection. NeverSez (sic) or aluminum wiring protection goo found at an electrical supply house will work. There's copper based stuff that is marine grade and used on thing like propeller bolts that will work well too. Wear gloves or have rags around, it's messy and will stain. I wouldn't bother cleaning the whole element, unless you're going to paint them (or powder coat). They'll oxide again. From street level you'll never know either. Don't forget to protect the joints and hardware on your Glenn Martin as well. Re: [Elecraft] Something *really* new at Dayton from Elecraft
Not enough power and way too many bucks. Too much power... only want a max of 150 watts out (considered LP in some contests);o) On another subject, why do you guys all buy QRP, limited function radios and then wish to add a 100 watt amp? Sometimes I run QRP, sometimes I run LP in contests... usually run LP when chasing new ones, but not always. And another subject, no one has commented on the thread that was going on about improving the DSP NR etc for the K3, and the fact that the KX3 will have a much improved DSP and newer better chip?? Leaves the K3 owners kinda out to dry dont it? Kinda the stuff that we always criticize YeaComWood for doing when a new model came out and the old one could not be updated? Or is a K4 around? I won't feel left out with my K3s, same as I didn't feel left out with my K2... The KX3 will have it's place. Until specifications are published and verified, everything else is pure speculation. Don't think one could place Elecraft in the same class as other manufacturers when it comes to upgrades, or service. Elecraft IMHO is miles above the rest. They have always come through for me quickly and without any fuss. If they had stock, I'd buy! [Elecraft] K3 Lightning near miss
Had a bunch of stuff zapped during the recent super cell event that wreaked so much havoc, including one of my K3s... First, hope anyone in the affected area is safe and sound. My K3 appears to be mostly OK, as far as I have been able to test it. The exception being the PA. I can get almost 20 Watts out max. The SWR/Power indication on the K3 does not appear to be functioning correctly. This leads me to think the issue is related to the diodes in that circuit. This happened several times with my K2s. Any thoughts? I happened to see the strike, as I was outside on the balcony observing the storm. It appears to have been a near miss, versus a hard core strike. My 160m Tee had the coffee can housing for the matching network blown apart and the coil and some wiring was melted/vaporized. The antenna, as some may recall, is within 25 feet of the operating position. Two blown breakers in the house, two UPSes tripped (one looks to be permanently dead), at least a blown video card on the shack computer and the K3 problem(s). The antennas were disconnected from the rig and grounded. Considering the other damage in the area, I feel I was pretty lucky overall. Re: [Elecraft] K3 & S9 43' Vertical
Hi Tom, Check out Phil's, AD5X, site: http://www.ad5x.com/articles.htm He has written a number of articles related to your questions. Good information with plenty of "how to" ideas with locally found materials. Elecraft's Balun kit is also capable of 1:4 unun and will easily work with any 100 watt rig. QST has had several items related to the ubiquitous 43' verticals that are all the rage now. I see at least one person has mentioned radials, which are a must have to effectively use this antenna on 80-30. The K3's ATU is very effective, but keep in mind that you will be matching the feedline and antenna as a unit, versus matching just the antenna. The K3 will most likely find a match most of the time, but you still could be seriously mismatched at the antenna. It may work, it just won't work well. Re: [Elecraft] Reason to NOT buy a K3?
Hi Gary, You've already had a lot of great replies... Thought I'd throw my two cents worth in at this late date: The second RX is well worth having particularly for the low bands where you're more likely to be using a separate RX antenna. Too, if you're gonna be DX, it's VERY useful for listening to behavior on your TX frequency, as well as the pile up. Diversity RX is very useful at times, but if you don't have the antenna(s), it is kinda expensive to have just to say you have one... I'd probably second the 500hz and 200hz options, not a big cost savings, but it could be put towards the second receiver... One can argue the performance difference between 5 pole and 8 pole, I've not seen a meaningful difference in my contesting activities. For digital (RTTY), I'd suggest going with FSK and the aforementioned filters would be just fine. The K3 is as competitive as you are... I think it is very functional, provides easy and competitive performance at a good price AND has a tremendous team behind it. Firmware is always being improved or having features added, which is more than you can say for some other companies. IF, you ever need to work on/repair one, it is fairly easy to do and parts aren't unobtainium. One can argue about a radio's competitive advantage forever, there are so many things that go into "winning" beyond the radio. That being said, either the K3 or K2 are great contest radios IMHO. The K3 offers a lot of flexibility and growth options. Combined with KYBITC, decent antennas, decent QTH and decent propagation, you definitely will in great shape for the top 10 ;o) Cheers and see ya in the fray! 73 and Happy New Year to all, Julius - Julius Fazekas N2WN Tennessee Contest Group http://www.k4ro.net/tcg/index.html Tennessee QSO Party http://www.tnqp.org/ Elecraft K2#4455 Elecraft K3/100 #366 Elecraft K3/100 #1875 -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Reason-to-NOT-buy-a-K3-tp5868025p5874614.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Sub Receiver Antenna
Bill, Just an operating example, I have a short (well had) 330' beverage within 20 feet of my TX antenna for 160m. I have never had an issue with the relay tripping. I run LP or QRP, it may be an issue running HP, but I haven't heard any complaints from any of my friends on the Top Band. I don't use a relay like David does, but probably will in the future to detune my TX antenna. Not because of the second RX relay, but to minimize RX antenna pattern distortion. Probably the best thing is to use isolation transformers and current chokes, if in doubt or just to be safe. Those are relatively easy to implement. David's option is a bit more complex, but may be necessary in certain circumstances. The easiest thing to do is try it with your current setup, if it doesn't trip, then most likely you're well enough isolated for that particular issue. 73, Julius n2wn - Julius Fazekas N2WN Tennessee Contest Group http://www.k4ro.net/tcg/index.html Tennessee QSO Party http://www.tnqp.org/ Elecraft K2/100 #4455 Elecraft K3/100 #366 Elecraft K3#1875 -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Sub-Receiver-Antenna-tp5576061p5579047.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

For me the weakness of the K3 is the (probably necessary) departure from the "kit model" of the rest of the Elecraft line where self repair is the order of the day. The repair of a K3, it seems to me, almost certainly requires a factory return, which, from this thread, is somewhat unappealing. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Repair
As it was explained to me, there are two different areas, Repairs and Modifications. I was told two to three weeks when I initially asked for an approximate time, but that was back towards the beginning of the year. There has been one new mod added since then. I'm guessing a lot of folks put off sending a rig back and Elecraft got hit all at once. I certainly would have liked a shorter turn around time, but do understand why it is taking so long. I would also think any warranty repair would have higher priority and would probably use repair/mod techs to build newly ordered rigs, at least some of the time (this is my opinion only) It's not been too horrible with a second K3 and K2 on hand, but sure do miss the second RX at times. hihi Too, now I have a good excuse to work on antennas and other station improvements. 73, Julius ----- Julius Fazekas N2WN Tennessee Contest Group http://www.k4ro.net/tcg/index.html Tennessee QSO Party http://www.tnqp.org/ Elecraft K2/100 #4455 Elecraft K3/100 #366 Elecraft K3#1875 -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Repair-tp5243994p5244569.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 possible option for the P3
After viewing the P3 at Dayton, and pondering adding one, one item came to mind which would make it more appealing to me. This would be a means to switch the P3 between two K3s from the P3 itself, and/or via computer. Yes, I know something could be jury rigged up to make that happen, but desktop real estate is at a premium... I envision something simple an elegant, maybe with a couple LEDs on either side of the display so that you would know which rig is on display. Re: [Elecraft] sound card recommendations
Rob, you might trying posting on CQ-Contest too for a contest related opinion. I've used the built in to the motherboard sound card on an old Win2K machine for SSB DVK with N1MM and it works well. So I would think that any decent middle of the road sound card should be fine for this app. It's a different story if you want to try a panadapter or SDR out. eMu makes good equipment, both internal and external. Haven't had any comments on the bluegears b-Enspirer card I asked about, which also is a 192 KHz. 73, Julius n2wn - Julius Fazekas N2WN Tennessee Contest Group http://www.k4ro.net/tcg/index.html Tennessee QSO Party http://www.tnqp.org/ Elecraft K2/100 #4455 Elecraft K3/100 #366 Elecraft K3#1875 -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/sound-card-recommendations-tp4854795p4860068.html Sent from the [HAM] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] OT Sound Card and USB to Serial Port Hub
Thanks folks... Jim and Joe, I see Edgeport 4 boxes for sale on ebay, versus Edgeport/4, not sure what or if there is anything different between the versions. The Digi website didn't help. The StarTech has basically the exact same specs, but Joe you suggest that it won't work correctly for RTTY? For basic sound, the onboard sound card will work fine, but doubt it would be sufficient for SDR purposes. I'm not willing to spend the time or money to build a custom computer. Ham specs are bad enough, computer components specs are downright terrifying considering how many variations there are... I don't mind an outboard port box, much simpler solution... [Elecraft] OT Sound Card and USB to Serial Port Hub
Well have a new computer. Windows 7 seems to be pretty decent, unfortunately the number of available slots leaves something to be desired. I only have three slots, one which is occupied by a video card (soon to be replaced by on that will eat up TWO slots). I have EMU sound cards, but only have one slot left. I am considering a bluegears b-Enspirer 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card, with the intention of using it for SDR/Panadapter/etc. Anyone have any experience with this card? Second, this new machine has ZERO serial ports and I need at least four. Cards aren't an option. So looking for an external hub capable of providing four or six assignable serial ports for SO2R and some other equipment. I'm considering this: StarTech.com 4 Port USB to Serial Adapter Hub with COM Retention Serial adapter - USB - 4 ports. Any experience or suggestions? Primarily I'll be using this equipment with 2 K3s, not that this should matter... Re: [Elecraft] K3 Stereo mic plug into rear panel mic (mono) jack! Okor not? PTT or VOX during SSB contest?
HC-4 is plugged into the sound card MIC IN, straight connection, no adapter. It works fine, can record and audio is good. The sound card output was connected to the K3 MIC MONO on the rear panel, with rP.H selected in config. I did this based on N1MM setup information. I used a stock 1/8" stereo cable. I did not try LINE IN MONO on the rear of the K3. I did get it to work by going from sound card out to the K3 front panel mic connector using the Heil adapter. It was set at FP.H. It worked OK. If I understand correctly, I need to have an stereo to mono adapter and use the K3 LINE IN MONO. Is that correct? Thanks for your help Dave! I use a foot switch, but mostly so I can mutter between QSOs ;o) I have a problem with the soundcard to K3 connection. When I use the rear mic jack, I get a low level squeal/tone . I do not have this when I use the front mic jack. Both are set High... I'm using a stereo cable, which works fine. The mic is an HC-4 connected via the sound card. I am definitely a SSB neophyte, but did manage to get N1MM to send a few messages for me and CQ. Definitely room for improvement. Re: [Elecraft] For you Anti-Scopes
It was pointed out to me that, as a tool, a P3/Panadapter/Softrock does provide a quick way of assessing activity on a given band quickly versus twirling the knob. I can see where this would be useful, particularly if you were looking for openings on 10 and 15, in the past few years. Too, you could assess how solid the opening might be. H, $700... Will have to check it out further in Dayton. Re: [Elecraft] For you Anti-Scopes
I'd be more impressed if it made a hole on 20M on Saturday during CQWWDX Steve :jumping: Scopes are nice tools, but "must have" is open to debate. Part of the fun of radio is tuning across the band and finding something on your own, before it's spotted... A better question, from my perspective, is how many "new" blips can it pick out when the band is packed from 14000 to 14130 with layers of CW signals, like during CQWWDX. 73, Julius - Julius Fazekas N2WN Tennessee Contest Group http://www.k4ro.net/tcg/index.html Tennessee QSO Party http://www.tnqp.org/ Elecraft K2/100 #4455 Elecraft K3/100 #366 Elecraft K3#1875 -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/For-you-Anti-Scopes-tp4583569p4586233.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Question about vertical and radial placement
Buy, beg, borrow or ste ummm locate a copy of Les Moxon's, G6XN (SK), book "HF Antennas for All Locations". He provides some options that are worth considering. The book covers a lot of possibilities for "small gardens", typical in the UK and US. Don't buy into the 43' vertical hype. It's a good compromise antenna with limitations, particularly on 160/80/75 where top loading would be a much better option. For the money, a Hustler 5 BTV Antenna, 80-75/40/20/15/10M, HUS-5BTV, also available from DXE is a good buy. If you find out you don't like the way the vertical works, you haven't just dumped $800. The other nice thing about the Hustler, is it makes a good platform to "build your own" on, down the road. 73, Julius n2wn - Julius Fazekas N2WN Tennessee Contest Group http://www.k4ro.net/tcg/index.html Tennessee QSO Party http://www.tnqp.org/ Elecraft K2/100 #4455 Elecraft K3/100 #366 Elecraft K3#1875 -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Question-about-vertical-and-radial-placement-tp4572326p4575391.html Sent from the [HAM] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Popping out of diversity mode
I agree Bill, but it would depend on what you have available for Rx antennas. I use my Tx vertical and a short beverage, more to focus (as much as that is possible with the given antennas) on EU. Where the vertical is pretty much omni, didn't need to worry about two directions. Re: [Elecraft] Popping out of diversity mode
Interesting Jim, and that indeed may be the mechanism. I should have noted exactly where and when it happened. Something is not quite kosher with the antenna on the lower 15 KHz of the band and I've not done anything to improve it (or as I fear ruin an excellent antenna) yet. My TX antenna is as close as yours to the shack. fortunately, didn't really "need" diversity this weekend. QSB wasn't a real issue... QRN and QRM on the other hand *sigh* Think there must have been a LOT of K3s out and about the way folks were packed in the tin ;o) Think Grant may have been heading in the same direction with his post... It wouldn't be the first Top Band RFI issue in this shack, but it's easier to combat and this antenna needs maintenance this Spring anyway. Re: [Elecraft] [OT] High SWR on 20 and 40
Dave, Have you tried putting a dummy load in line and seeing if the tuner will tune 1:1 with it? This might tell you if the problem is in the tuner. You could also place the load further along the coax and see if the problem disappears. My KAT2 can tune almost anything it seems, but it is possible that your bridge diodes got zapped and that would cause problems. 73, Julius n2wn djmd wrote: > > Hello, > > I have been trying to troubleshoot my antenna system, and have been trying > to avoid the dreaded "high swr" post, but I've run out of ideas, so I'm > turning here. > > First let me explain my system. 67' dipole fed by 16' of window line. > That's connected to an Elecraft balun. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 how often do you use it?
Are you sure he's not trying to keep you out of the "winner's circle"? ;o) Seems like there are more K3s noted in 3830 postings every contest, not to mention the still venerable K2s. Many well known calls, not just lil' pistols. The 200W comment is not valid for most LP contests. There are a few that allow 150W, but most consider LP to be 100W. Most, if not all, serious contesters change bands via the logging program. The only controls I touch during a contest are AF, RF and maybe filter width. (Yes, I sometimes play with RIT/XIT) If you need to dink around with controls a lot, you're not making enough contacts. For the big multi-multi stations, it may be more of a function of cost, initially. They generally try to standardize as much as possible. Too, with monster antenna arrays, some of the issues they face are not the same as folks with a single tribander and dipole... It probably comes down to operator preference in the end... For various, non-technical reasons more than anything else. 73, Julius K8RDD wrote: > > Sorry for the misspelling in the original message. It should have > started "A fellow". Re: [Elecraft] [HAM] Contesting with logging software on a PC (not MAC)
With 1TB drives in the sub $100 range it's possible to store a tremendous amount of contest info. Think this is excellent advice. I run N1MM on Win2K and XP machines. The Win2K machine is probably 6 years old. I've never had a HD fail, but have had a PS go out just as a contest started and really should have implemented this advice already. I've had too many problems with Vista to trust it, FWTW. Don't forget eQSL along with LoTW. LoTW does not officially provide backup logs. You can download sync information for various general logging software, but believe this only has LoTW confirmed QSO information, some details may or may not match what you have logged. Will have to look into dropbox as a repository option too. Helpful info all around... Lee J. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] New K3 User and New Ham
Welcome Steve! I think you'll find if you can build a K3, a simple antenna will be a piece of cake to construct, not to mention a lot less expensive. The biggest problem you will have is making a choice. A dipole is a good place to start, vertical or the traditional horizontal configuration. There are plenty of places online to find dimensions, or calculate them. Verticals are popular to, but require decent radials to work well. A half Square is another option. It would be easier if you provide a bit more detail about the tree(s) and what your intended area of interest might be (DXing, Ragchewing, contesting, etc.) Here is one place to start: http://www.dxzone.com On batteries, this paper is worth reading to learn more about specific batteries and their properties: http://www.norcalqrp.org/files/Batteries_and_Charging_Systems_KK6MC_whitepaper.pdf An option is to look for a place that supplies batteries for UPS systems to the telecommunication industry. We have one that sells to the public and often you can buy batteries that are perfectly acceptable for ham radio, that are no longer usable for cell systems. Some are used, or exceed the industry's shelf life requirements. I recently purchased "new" 150AH deep cycle batteries for under $100. They work fine. Yellow Tops are another car/boat variety that are popular in some ham circles, they're pricey new. You'll most likely want to consider buying or building a current balun for you feed line. What type will be dictated by the antenna. Make sure you ground your station correctly and don't leave the rig connected to your antenna when not in use. Trust me, it will save you a lot of headaches ;o) You can do an awful lot with QRP too. It will be a lot easier on you battery... Cheers, Julius KC2VNI wrote: > > Folks: I am a new ham. Re: [Elecraft] [HAM] Hi Q versus Vertical
Hi Frank, As mentioned elsewhere, radials are key to good performance. Verticals will work, and sometimes not badly either, with less than optimum radials. The key is high density under the feed point. Flashing may be a good option, a metal roof would be great. That being said, I know a lot of folks who love the SteppIr vertical. It probably is a good antenna for 40-6. Any base fed vertical will be less efficient than one with a top hat or inductor, at least half way up (preferably higher). Probably the best question is what do you expect the antenna to do? Be competitive in pileups? Work tons of DX? Local ragchewing? Just CW or SSB or both? The answers will help you focus on a specific antenna better. For the money a Hustler 6 BTV Antenna is a good place to start. It's a bit narrow on 80/75, but you can find out how well a vertical will work for you, then consider something like a SteppIr. That's assuming you don't want to build your own, which can be virtually free if you're a decent scrounger. 73, Julius Frank MacDonell wrote: > > I am looking for an antenna to work 6 thru 80 meters in a condo > development.
