[Elecraft] [K3] No Power Output

2009-03-22 Thread KB1PXD

Hello everyone,
as of last evening, my K3 is no longer indicating any
power output on the RF meter during transmit. I've
tried both PTT and VOX, as well as 2 different antennas.
(dipole beam) When selecting ATU TUNE, I see the
RF meter go to 5W as expected, but the SWR indicator
above only displays - -. I've gone through all the settings
and they look correct. The PWR knob is fully clockwise,
I'm not in test mode, etc., etc. I've sent an email to Elecraft
but I thought I'd check here as well to see if anyone has
seen this behavior.

Thanks,
- Bill

Thanks for the quick response Arie. I tried upgrading
my firmware from 2.67 to 2.78 but I'm still seeing the
same results. (RF meter remains at 0 when transmitting)

[Elecraft] KUSB support under Vista?

2008-09-30 Thread KB1PXD

Greetings,
I just purchased a new computer (with Vista) as my old computer finally
died. Is there driver support for the KUSB cable and if so, where can
I download them? I noticed that the Prolific web site mentioned something

[Elecraft] IF DSP strangeness

2008-08-19 Thread KB1PXD

Greetings everyone,
I just noticed some odd behavior with IF DSP that I hadn't noticed
up until now. I'm not sure if I inadvertently changed a setting to
cause this behavior or not:

When I activate IF DSP, (VFO B / any setting) my S-meter goes to zero
whether I'm locked on to a signal or not. The DSP setting controlled
by VFO A seems to be functioning normally however. Any idea what
may be causing this?

Thanks,

[Elecraft] QRM/QRN - normal?

2008-08-01 Thread KB1PXD

Greetings,
I'm currently seeing a consistent S5 for noise level on 20m with the
pre-amp activated. It drops to S3 with the pre-amp disabled. This
reading was taken at noon time on the east coast. Does this sound
reasonable based on current conditions, or do you think I'm experiencing
interference from something nearby? I'm fairly new to HAM radio so
I'm not really sure what to expect for this time year and based on
current conditions. It seems kind of high to me.

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] QRM/QRN - normal?

2008-08-01 Thread KB1PXD

Hi Vic,
I'm using the K3. I haven't really played much with
the noise blanker up until now, but I was just able to
reduce the noise level by about 1-2 s-units by enabling
NB with the following settings:
DSP - T3-7
IF - NAR1

If I couple these settings with disabling the pre-amp, I
can get the noise level down to around an S1!
Great work Elecraft!

I'll have to start playing around with the NB settings more
often going forward. I'm not sure what effect this might
have on a received signal however. (didn't test that yet)
Are there any general guidelines for using NB? (i.e., DSP
versus IF, using only DSP, using both, etc.)

Thanks,

- Bill

This is probably primarily man-made noise from nearby (radius of a few
blocks) electrical devices. You don't mention what rig you are using,
but if it has a noise blanker, it might help.

This time of year with everyone running air conditioners, it's
unfortunately not surprising to see a high noise level in urban or
 suburban locations.

Horizontal antennas will probably be quieter than verticals. Balanced
antennas are usually better than unbalanced ones, and dipoles can
benefit from the use of a balun. A random wire that comes into your
shack is probably the worst of all.

[Elecraft] Sanity check on VOX settings

2008-07-19 Thread KB1PXD

Greetings,
I just picked up a new Heil Pro-Set PLUS headset for my K3 and
I've been trying to get the VOX settings adjusted appropriately. Keep
in mind that my shack is my bedroom which is very quiet. The MIC
is connected via the rear 1/8 mic/phone connectors. The following
settings have been made:

VOX GN = 30
ANTIVOX = 0
MIC SEL = r P.H (no bias)
VOX Delay = .50

Do these settings sound reasonable? Am I missing anything?

Also, what's the easiest way to quickly mute the mic if you need to cough
or something?

Thanks!

[Elecraft] Heil Proset Quiet Phone

2008-07-16 Thread KB1PXD

I'm thinking about swinging by HRO this afternoon to grab the Heil
Proset Quiet Phone for my K3. Assuming that I want to use the back
connectors for a cleaner installation, what additional adapters/cables
will I need to get this working? I'd prefer not to use VOX unless someone
can convince me otherwise. (I'm never used VOX before so I guess
I'm a little gun shy) Also, what element would you recommend? I'm
pretty much an exclusive DX operator.

[Elecraft] K3 headset question

2008-07-03 Thread KB1PXD

Greetings,
My K3 will be shipped out any day now! (woo-hoo)
I've decided to pickup a Heil headset, but I'm not sure if I should
go with the Elecraft proset-k2, or just run out to HRO and grab
a proset-4, etc. Questions:

1.) If I decide to pick one up at at HRO, can I just pickup the adapter
that's pinned out for Kenwood radios? (8-pin)

2.) Does the Elecraft proset-k2 come already wired for the K3 with
no soldering required?

** I'm trying to avoid any soldering if possible.

Any pros/cons of either of these choices?

Thanks!

Bill

[Elecraft] Microphone recommendation?

2008-04-22 Thread KB1PXD

Greetings everyone,
I'm presently using a TS-850sat with the stock microphone while I wait for
my K3 to be shipped.
I've been thinking about upgrading the microphone to something that offers
better fidelity and
more punch for DX'ing. I don't want to spend more than $150. I'm also
looking for a microphone
that'll work with the K3 without any re-wiring if that's possible. Is it
worth upgrading at all, and if so, what microphone would you recommend?
I've been looking at the Heil Proset and Kenwood mc-60a thus far.
If the differences between the stock mic and any other mic for under $150
would be negligible, then
I'll just stick with what I have.

Thanks!

[Elecraft] K3 ATU specifications

2008-04-10 Thread KB1PXD

Greetings everyone,
I'm trying to debate whether or not to pickup an external LDG tuner or just
go
with the K3 built-in ATU. Does anyone know the tuning specifications of the
ATU? I need a tuner that will hopefully tune every band to = 1.5:1 on a
Cobra
multiband dipole antenna. The built-in ATU in my TS-850 has difficulties
with
certain frequency ranges within a couple of bands. Should I go with the
built-in
K3 ATU, or remove that from my order and just pickup an a decent external
LDG tuner? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

[Elecraft] Rigblaster/Signalink for K3?

2008-03-23 Thread KB1PXD

Does anyone know if there's a Rigblaster or Signalink product
that supports the K3? I'm looking for a plug n' play canned solution
to support the digital modes.

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] Rigblaster/Signalink for K3?

2008-03-23 Thread KB1PXD

Hi Dave,
I appreciate your input but as I had said, I'm looking for
canned solution. Also, my laptop doesn't contain a serial
port so I'd need a USB--Serial adapter. (I know, not
a big deal but I'm trying to keep this clean and simple)
I too plan to use DM780 but have no interest in controlling
the K3 (changing freq., etc.) from HRD. I'm looking for the
simplest solution to support PSK31. I've read in some older
threads where someone was able to accomplish this by just
a pair of stereo cables and enabling VOX, but based on a recent
thread, there seems to be some question about this configuration
and whether or not it works or is problematic. Thanks for
your reply.

What does the K3 lack that a Rigblaster or Signalink provides? I use
mine with MMTTY, N1MM logging/CW keying and DM780 straight to a sound
card. The TX control in DM780 is via the normal serial cable, in MMTTY
via a simple single transistor keying circuit built into the 15 way
accessory plug. CW keying from N1MM logging is via the serial lead, I
also have a K1EL Winkey which works fine too. The K3 has transformer
isolated line in and line out sockets.

The nice thing about an 'all-in-one' solution:

 1) Just one USB cable connected to your radio.
 2) Very high quality soundcard.
 3) Winkeyer built-in.
 4) Extra COM ports.
 5) Monitor the audio.
 6) One chunky cable from the unit to your radio.

End result is a very tidy installation with a high-quality soundcard.

Re: [Elecraft] Rigblaster/Signalink for K3?

2008-03-23 Thread KB1PXD

I'm not certain that they have a solution that fully
supports the K3. I've sent them email inquiring about this.
I didn't see any solutions on their website that included
the appropriate cable to connect to the K3, but maybe
I missed it.

Thanks,
- Bill

[Elecraft] Is the K3 shipping estimate really accurate?

2008-03-13 Thread KB1PXD

Greetings everyone,
Like many others here on the forum, I've been patiently waiting for my
new K3. My order was placed on 2/18 and at the time, I was told there
would be a 4-month turnaround time. In fact, the Elecraft website is
still indicating a 4-month turnaround time. Being that this will be my
first HF rig, I'm having difficulties coming to terms with not receiving
it until June at the very earliest. What worries me even more is that
June may in fact be overly optimistic, and it could very well be July,
August, or even later before I see it. Can someone from Elecraft,
or even someone with some insight into their current back order situation
comment on the likeliness of me receiving my rig by mid-June?
As it stands now, June is really pushing my patience, and if I knew it
it was going to be even longer, I think that I'm going to have to give
some serious consideration into purchasing a ProIII within the next
few weeks. I'm hopeful that Elecraft will be able to ramp up their
production and get me my rig even prior to June, but I have a feeling
that's not going to happen. Any insight would be greatly appreciated
and help me immensely in making my decision.

Thanks,
- Bill

Re: [Elecraft] Is the K3 shipping estimate really accurate?

2008-03-13 Thread KB1PXD

Thanks to everyone who responded. Lots of great advice. It's
very encouraging to hear that the K3 is well worth waiting for.
I'm actually considering picking up a lower priced QRP rig such
as the FT-817ND ($600), and using that in the interim. Hopefully
I'll be able to get most of my money back 4-6 months down the road
when my K3 is ready. I'll also be exploring used rigs as well. If anyone
has a K1 that they'd be interested in selling, please email me. I thought
about ordering one but I'm not confident enough to perform the assembly.

Also, if anyone is interested in selling their K2, please email me.
It'll probably be 1-2 weeks however until I'm ready to make the
purchase, but I'm definitely interested.
