[Elecraft] K3s VFO A and VFO B Retain Power Levels
I know that we can retain the operating mode in VFO A and VFO B and the radio returns to the last operating mode in each VFO. Great. Is there a way also to retain the power levels for VFOs? It would be convenient when moving from SSB in VFO A at QRO levels to go to VFO B for instance at 40 watts for PSK. Now one manually changes the power levels when changing VFOs. Now, each VFO uses the last power level set for either VFO, requiring an adjustment for QRP, digital and SSB. Just a thought for a helpful future upgrade if possible. [Elecraft] K3 Trade Offer
If you have a K3 and looking to upgrade to the K3S while wondering what to do with your K3, read on. I have a new Meade 8" LX90 ACF Telescope with field tripod, GPS and computer control Audioguide which I bought earlier this year on impulse. I have $1,600 invested but have never gone out at night to enjoy it. I fall asleep too early or am on the radio. I would like to trade the telescope plus cash of course for your K3 if you are looking to sell/trade and have an interest in the night sky. This is a terrific telescope used only to align the spotting telescope that comes with it, so if you are interested in the night sky and can stay awake long enough to enjoy it please contact me off-line. Re: [Elecraft] Rig Insurance
My experience with Ham insurance is that your Homeowners policy will cover you for all damages to your equipment provided the incident occurs when operating from home. I collected $8,000.00 on a lightning strike several years ago, all on my homeowners policy and the claim was settled quickly and painlessly by USAA. I looked at the ARRL insurance policy and rates, and thought the rates absurd and the coverage no better for someone who does not operate mobile or portable than Homeowners. Most Hams should be comfortable with their Homeowners coverage, and there is no additional charge for ham equipment. I would not waste money on an expensive ARRL ham insurance policy; so much for "non-profits" by the way. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Rig-Insurance-tp7606063p7606110.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 and Digital Modea (KM4VX)
I have found that the use of an inexpensive computer type fan on even low power running behind the KX3 works well in allowing the full use of the digital modes, to include WSPR at 5 watts full cycle of 112 seconds. Thank you for all the thoughtful inputs. Running WSPR at 3 watts does not require the fan, but at 5 watts the fan is adequate. The radio gets warms, but does not overheat. My KX3 came with the latest heat sink from ElecraftI, have not performed the temperature compensation mod, and will not be buying any after-market heat sink. 73 Ron KM4VX -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Re-KX3-KX3-and-Digital-Modea-KM4VX-tp7605181p7605261.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and Digital Modea
Lyle: Thank you. My KX3 was purchased last week so I am confident it has the new heat sink. I have adjusted WSPR to 3 watts and it works. Since the radio does warm up I am going to use a computer fan to aid the heat sink. I believe Elecraft should have upgraded to a better heat sink. I do not place faith in the after-market ones but it is what it is. 73. [Elecraft] KX3 and Digital Modea
I am on my second KX3, having sold the first one and then find myself missing it. However, I now find the KX3 routinely overheats in digital modes. Specifically, at just 5 watts on WSPR with transmission time of 2 minutes (as regulated by WSPR software) the KX3 overheats "HI TEMP" at a minute and a half, resulting in a safety shutdown of the rig. This radio has a wonderful built-in digital capability, but digital appears beyond the rig's ability, save CW which is my main digital interest anyway. I would like to use the KX3 occasionally on PSK, JT65 and WSPR without the absurdity of having to buy an after-market heat sink to replace a factory installed heat sink. There is no guarantee the after-market one is superior, and it shouldn't be necessary since a radio with a digital capability should not need some after-market accessory to enable the advertised digital mode. I wonder if anyone has found a firmware or software answer to the over heating problem. The overheating problem happens regularly in digital modes and I believe comments about the KX3 working correctly in digital are simply incorrect. This is not an antenna issue and not an SWR issue. My KPA500 working with my K3 correctly changes bands when band is changed from KPA500 or the K3, but when put into "OPERATE" it only transmits at "STANDBY" power level, not the level set to transmit in "OPERATE." I have no amp output power beyond K3. The HV reading is 74.5 while the current level is a constant 0, never changes when sending CW or idle. I am operating on 220 and it has worked fine to date. I wonder if I have inadvertently changed some parameter. Any help would be appreciated. I reset the KPA500 to default values. [Elecraft] KAT500 Tuning Issue with V1.67
Since updating to 1.67 my KAT500 tuner is behaving strangely. It won't tune my 40 meter dipole on "auto" and when the KAT500 is placed in "bypass" the K3 autotuner tunes the same antenna perfectly. I have tried different coax, but the K3 autotuner at 25 watts output tunes the antenna nicely while the KAT500 does not. Both the KAT500 and the W2 wattmeter go nuts when I try and tune the 40 meter dipole through the KAT500. In KAT500 "bypass" the meters on the KAT500 and W2 continue to show very high SWR but the K3 autotuner works fine and presents a perfect SWR to the K3. The KAT500 has no problem with the higher bands. My KX3 tunes this same 40 meter dipole through the KXPA100 with no problem. It must be something in the KAT500. Anyone else having this problem? Is this a problem with V1.67? Re: [Elecraft] P3 Carrier always 6khz below freq.
Thank you for the replies. The coax provided by Elecraft is good, but I had it twisted around other cables when connected between the K3 IF output and the P3 IF input. I disconnected the cable from the P3, rerouted it from the K3 so as not to wrap around numerous other cables, and the troublesome inaudible carrier disappeared. Problem is now solved and maybe this experience helps others. The connecting cable is very well made and shielded, but direct contact with other coax/cables created RF that did get into the P3. [Elecraft] P3 Carrier always 6khz below freq.
I have noticed that my P3 displays a solid carrier 6khz below the frequency to which I am listening. When I tune to the frequency there is no sound but a solid carrier on the waterfall and a good spike on the screen, although no audible signal. This appears consistent on every band, a spike usually below but occasionally above the listening frequency with a solid carrier in the waterfall and a spike on the screen; no audible signal when moving to that frequency, and the spike and carrier just moves another 6khz down. Nothing I do to the K3 reception makes any difference. Any information to identify this carrier and eliminate it would be appreciated. Many thanks. [Elecraft] KX3 Extremely Low Output Level
I have the KX3 I/Q output port into the Griffin IMic and then into the IPAD 2 via the camera adapter attachment running ISDR. The volume into powered speakers is dismal; so low as to be useless. I wonder what powered speakers others are using with this configuration, which is the setup Elecraft used at Dayton (unknown speakers) and what is used on the YouTube video (again unknown speakers). Is there any way to raise the I/Q output level? What kind of powered speakers are needed? Thanks, and I hope any suggestions might interest other users. None of the cheap ($15.00)computer or expensive ($125.00) game type speakers I have tried manage to raise the volume level of the signal from the I/Q output so one can comfortably hear anything. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and P3 Adapter
Thanks to all for the interesting ideas. I am now using the KX3 I/Q output to my PC line in (works equally well to mic input in rear) and the simple NaP3 software. Works great for panadapter and controlling the rig. I have ordered the inexpensive iMic soundcard to see if there will be any difference. I tried the HDSDR and other free software programs out there, but in the absence of operation manuals I found the screen for the HDSDR panadapter incomprehensible (full disclosure here;could not relate all the differfent lines and screens to anything useful for me anyway) Now that I have solved my problem I will probably never use it since I find using a PC to run a panadapter a waste of space and resources. Look forward to one day seeing an adapter for the KX3-P3 combo, and I see many others out here would also make the same investment. I do not go portable with my KX3 but enjoy QRP and the radio. 73 Ron -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KX3-and-P3-Adapter-tp7573862p7574262.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and P3 Adapter
Must be some interest in the topic!! I have a line connected from the I/Q output of the KX3 (with the menu ON) into my PC sound card, line in. Nothing happens using the HDSDR software on the waterfall although I can control the KX3. Not receiving signals, just noise. Question: What sound cards are people finding useful? My generic Realistic PC sound card is apparently inadequate. The Creative Labs E MU0202 which is popular seems out of stock most places. [Elecraft] KX3 POWER ON/OFF OPTION
Great radio and I am enjoying it along with my other Elecraft products: K1, K2, KAT100, KA100. K3, P3, KPA500, KAT500, W2 and XG3 (walking advertisement). Question: It would be very convenient if one could turn on and off the KX3 with one button as opposed to having to push two. For those of us sans backpack the two button security feature is more cumbersome than one might imagine, particularly when using the Nifty Ham Accessory stand for the KX3 and the many input ports on the left side of the radio. If this option could be made available in a software/firmware upgrade it would be helpful for those of us not planning to ham while mountain climbing, skiiing or scuba diving etc. Thanks. Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Tune in KAT500 Utility software broken?
I get it. You HOLD the XMIT button on the K3 to tune the KAT500 and no need to press TUNE on the KAT500 and then a button on the K3. You don't TAP the ATU TUNE button when in BYPASS mode with the ATU installed (if using the KAT500) because nothing happens except the screen reminds that you are in BYPASS mode. There is room for some confusion and some omission in the manual. For instance: " You can prevent automatic tuning by selecting the MAN (manual) mode. In MAN, the KAT500 will automatically choose a new tuner setting..." I guess that makes sense to someone. In MAN mode the tuner automatically. Thanks. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KAT500-Tune-in-KAT500-Utility-software-broken-tp7566649p7566730.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Tune in KAT500 Utility software broken?
I think we need further clarification. "Tapping" the ATU TUNE button on the K3 just toggles between BYPASS and ATU. It does not force the KAT500 to tune. Do you mean we should HOLD the XMIT button on the K3 to force the KAT500 to tune or should we HOLD the ATU TUNE button on the K3 to force the KAT500 to tune. I very much agree with the post that one button on the KAT500 or one button on the K3 would be better than having to push a button on both to tune. Of course we still want the KAT500 to memorize the settings. [Elecraft] KAT500 and W2
One reason I look forward to seeing the operating manual for the KAT500 is because I have found the Elecraft W2 an extremely accurate way of fine tuning my manual antenna tuner, well beyond what the SWR indicator of the K3 may be indicating, when used with the Palstar AT2k. It is easy to fine tune the K3 when used with the AT2K and have the W2 register just one green light-perfect SWR. The K3 is of course happy with less than this "perfect" SWR match, but when adjusting the manual tuner while putting out about 10 watts with the K3 one can get a perfect match. I look forward to seeing the manual for the KAT500 and seeing what is possible in fine tuning the auto tuner using the manual function of the KAT500. Wiil the KAT500 memory retain the settings made in the manual adjustment for a given frequency? Is manual adjustment of the KAT500 possible with simultaneous power output from the K3? It is not possible to manually adjust the KAT3 in the K3 while applying power. Looking forward to previewing the KAT500 manual. 73 Ron KM4VX -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KAT500-and-W2-tp7560548.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500
I did not expect my additional comments on My KAT500 posting to appear on the Reflector; thought they would be private responses to private e-mails. Live and learn. I do disagree with marketing that raises demands without an ability to meet the demand for months or years. I think instant gratification is what drives Hamfests and much of hobby-buying; new "toys" are constantly coming on the market, and I think many of us expect to buy now what is advertised now. I understand others are willing to wait and track and graph KX3 shipments etc. This also raises expectations and increases demand; nothing to do with quality or technology. It drives sales. Owning and enjoying K/1, K2, K3, P/3, W2, and the KPA500 I admit to being an Elecraft fan and await the KAT500. Nevertheless, I do object to marketing what is not readily available and not providing regular updates on the status of those products delayed for whatever reason. I like the Elecraft products and also have several of their radios/meters/amp etc. However, I still find the marketing unsatisfactory and the hype over their products unjustified; the reflector serves to keep the prices inflated and promotes the products using the customers as unpaid salesmen. Re: [Elecraft] K2 XV50 Transverter Antenna Connection
Don: I have the dip switches and the shorting blocks correctly set in the XV50, but I don't see the following in the K2 menu. This is from your e-mail: "Also set it for split TX/RX IF cables. The K2 TRNx selection should match the DIP switch settings in the XV50." Is this done inside the K2 or XV50 or is it a menu function of the K2? I set the TRN1 on the K2 menu correctly per the instructions. Thanks again for the help. Since you have the K60XV, set up the XV50 for 1 mW input power, and set it as TRN1 (or 2 or 3 or 4, your choice) with the dip switches in the XV50. Also set it for split TX/RX IF cables. The K2 TRNx selection should match the DIP switch settings in the XV50. Set the other menu parameters - especially the power equals Low and 1.00 mW. That should make you "good to go" When the KPA100 is connected, you cannot use the QRP ANT2 for anything - the presence of the KPA100 forces the KAT2 to ANT1. When you have it set up correctly, the band switch will select 6 meters, the XV50 will turn on and you can TX/RX just like on the HF bands, but using the antenna that is connected to the XV50. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/2/2012 7:28 PM, KM4VX wrote: > I have a K2/10 connected to a KAT100 and KPA100, both enclosed in the > external EC2 enclosure. [Elecraft] K2 XV50 Transverter Antenna Connection
I have a K2/10 connected to a KAT100 and KPA100, both enclosed in the external EC2 enclosure. Works great, thanks to Don in Wake Forest. I just acquired a used XV 50 and have been trying to connect it to my K2 setup. I can't figure out how to connect the antenna output from the transverter to my 6 meter dipole. I have the antenna 1 port from the K2 going to the EC2, and two antenna ports from the EC2 going to antennas. I control antenna 1 and antenna 2 on the EC2 with the K2 antenna switch/button; this is normal. I now have a free antenna 2 port on the K/2 and the single antenna port on the XV50. The instructions ((XV50,K60XV (which I have and use with the transverter) and K2)) indicate the coax to the 6 meter antenna should be directly from the transverter. That doesn't seem to work. How does the K2 know which antenna port to use? Should I use antenna 1 or antenna 2 switch on the K2? The antenna 2 output on the K2 is not connected to anything now based on the way it is connected to the EC2; K2 uses only antenna 1 port although ports 1 and 2 are used from the KPA100 to antennas. [Elecraft] K3 and K2 simultaneous on serial to USB cables to computer
I have both my K2 and K3 connected via serial to USB cables, but I cannot get the computer to recognize the K2. The K3 is connected via the Elecraft serial to USB cable and works fine. The K2 uses a serial to USB adapter, but the computer refuses to recognize the K2 adapter and insists on going to the K3. I imagine because both are called "serial to USB adapters." I know this is more of a computer question than a K2/K3 issue and maybe the computer can't recognize two serial to USB connections. Any recommendations for forcing the computer to recognize the K2 or using a different adapter? The cable from IO2 on the K2 is correct. The serial to USB adapter for the K2 may be inferior. Even when I disconnect the K3 serial to USB cable, the computer will still not recognize the K2 connection. Re: [Elecraft] K2 No Receive on 40 Meters
I want to thank those of you who responded to my problem, and in particular Don (W3FPR) who once again demonstrated his knowledge of the K2 and his willingness to generously share his time and talent. The problem was in the secondary menu. The D19 parameter was "y" and since no K60XV is installed in this K2 the parameter has to be set to "n." Once I changed the parameter to "n" for D19 the radio came to life on 40 meters. I do not know how the parameter might have been changed, but all is well now. I never would have discovered this error without Don's input. Maybe others might benefit from this experience. Thank you all. [Elecraft] K2 No Receive on 40 Meters
My K2/10 (#6255) has suddenly lost any receive capability on 40 meters. It transmits on all bands including 40 meters but hears nothing on 40. I have done the simple checks in changing coax and antenna inputs with no change. I have a second K2 for comparison, but lacking any lab equipment here am unable to identify the problem. I don't recall ever accidently transmitting into the rig on 40 when using another radio. Any input from the group would be appreciated. There is no receive on 40 in any mode, just the same low noise throughout the band. The noise level does increase when the preamp is on, but still no receive. It works fine on al other bands. [Elecraft] P3 Ref LVL and SCALE? Means What?
I am trying to understand what these terms mean, and having read the related posts still can't figure out what they mean or what settings to use. I want the P3 to reflect cw signals and sometimes ssb signals within a given span (say plus and minus 75). I have no idea what the db signals to he left reflect because they can't reflect receiving signals at that db level can they? (-100? -50? ??) I think ELECRAFT should include a description in the owner's manual of what the terms mean and make some suggestions of what settings to use. The art of scientific prose is to be able to articulate the complex so the masses may understand. Also, a default setting is always appreciated. Many thanks. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Replaced Your Pro III?
I always enjoy the Reflector coments, educational and occasionally funny. I own the K-2, K-3 and PRO 111. This site is great PR for Elecraft, but we should remember that their expensive wattmeter is inaccurate to the extreme although pretty, and the P3 (in my opinion anyway) appears to be pure fluff for a lot of bucks. While I like Elecraft, particularly the K-2, irrespective of all the testing results you can find ad nauseum all over the Internet, I find the PRO 111 equal to the K-3 and a lot easier to master. I intend to keep both and will still use the K-2 more than the K-3 or PRO 111, primarily QRP on 40. I think which radio you prefer is just a matter of personal choice and your level of frustration; the PRO 111 is basically plug-and-play while both the K-2 and K-3 demand excessive fine tuning, calibration, adjustments, and searching menu after menu for the simplest of tasks. These are trade-offs. Enjoy the hobby, but be careful what you wish for; those Japanese radios earned their markets. 73. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Replaced-Your-Pro-III-tp4957548p4959337.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K2 Use of CC1 K Heil Mic Cable
Thank you Gary and Bob. I now understand using the menu for the K3 to turn bias on and off. Makes sense. I would not want to change the configuration of the mic socket in the K2 radio, which would then limit the use of mics and eliminate the use of the Elecraft mics. I could change the wiring of the CC1K cable, and it appears that one does not use pin six of the Kenwood mic cable for the K2 and 5 or 8v is applied to pin 5 per page 18 of the KSB2 manual. [Elecraft] K2 Use of CC1 K Heil Mic Cable
I use the Heil CC1 K cable and a Heil mic for my K3, and it works fine. I tried the same CC1 K cable and Mic on the K2 and it does not work. I assume the Kenwood mic configuration for the K3 is correct but that is not true for the K2. Correct? I have the Elecraft MH2 hand mic for the K2 and it works fine, so the radio is not the problem. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft P3 panadapter at the Orlando Hamcation
The P3 looks and appears to act much like the excellent screen which is integrated into my IC 756 PRO 3. Since we like the K3 so much Elecraft decided to compete with a separate panadapter like the P3, rather than a K4. I think the LP-PAN kit for $175.00, with free software connected to a computer that anyone who wants a panadapter has anyway, represents a much better investment for me. I can run all sorts of software with the LP-PAN. The P3 is just the scope addition to the 756 in its own box. I don't think the P3 market is there except as we are now marketing it. This is a sophisticated and tech savvy group; maybe just too loose with its cash Of course I will be proven wrong, which is okay because I wish the company all the best. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Elecraft-P3-panadapter-at-the-Orlando-Hamcation-tp4564111p4568597.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft P3 panadapter at the Orlando Hamcation
Harry: Let's keep the exchange civil. There is nothing "silly" about my views or those you put forward. You demonstrate the success of good marketing by both Microsoft and Elecraft. I am not taking anything away from either, but this is about marketing not technology. Most of these companies are on the cutting edge, whether they are here or elsewhere. How you choose to view them is called "marketing." Date: Sat, 13 Feb 2010 09:08:14 -0800 From: ml-node+4566946-827498...@n2.nabble.com To: ronce...@earthlink.net Subject: Re: Elecraft P3 panadapter at the Orlando Hamcation "What drives the price of a new product more than anything is marketing. Microsoft could sell Windows 7 at profit for 50 cents but charges $149.00. The P-3 price is being defined here on the reflector by those of us who are so enthusiastic about Elecraft;...The P-3 could sell for a few hundred dollars at profit, similar to other panadapters. Instead, we are talking about more than double that price." This is just plain silly. First, Microsoft could sell Windows 7 at $300. Why? Because it can. Because it has a by far dominant position in the market. Because people and corporate entities will pay for it. Because Microsoft is in the business to make money. Second, I would wager that you, like most of us, have very little factual insight into Elecraft's cost structure including: R&D, manufacturing, product marketing, distribution and order fulfillment, warranty support and on-going customer support. Further, we have no insight into what return on investment Elecraft's management and investors expect to see with each new product plan and commercial launch. Subsequently, apart from market forces (competitive products and pricing, demand, etc.) P3 pricing is going to be highly dependent upon Elecraft pricing and margin requirements far beyond "price being defined here on the reflector..." I can assure you the probability is very great that if pricing was defined by the reflector Elecraft and many other vendors would not be in business. Third, and related above, "the P3 could sell for a few hundred dollars at profit..." Don't know how you can make this claim. Further, what other panadaptors? SDR-IQ is a specialty device intended for a market far broader than "panadaptor" and the ham community and is highly dependent upon 3rd party software, PC processing, etc. Softrock and LP-Post implementations are more kit oriented also requiring additional 3rd party content. The P3, on the other hand, appears to be designed as (a) integrated with the K3 and (b) self-contained hardware implementation (sort of guessing here as no real specifics released). The only recent and maybe relative comparison would be the Yaesu DMU-2000(at $750 to $850) as an outboard, dedicated accessory (although I would wager the P3 implementation will be far superior with respect to technology platform and panadaptor functionality). Keep in mind that while Elecraft's innovation, R&D quality, manufacturing quality, etc. sets the company apart from many other vendors in our hobby, the company has to make money not only to keep its owners happy but to plow back into the business. Don't think of it as a non-profit for the ham community. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft P3 panadapter at the Orlando Hamcation
Phil: Thanks you for your comments. You confirm everything I said about marketing. I stand by my comments about Microsoft and the marketing of the P-3. If you think the asking price is cheap then I guess that is what we will be paying, but we will pay it for the reasons I stated. I also like Elecraft, but like some of us seek value for my money with an empahsis on more value and less money. Date: Sat, 13 Feb 2010 08:40:12 -0800 From: ml-node+4566854-287279...@n2.nabble.com To: ronce...@earthlink.net Subject: Re: Elecraft P3 panadapter at the Orlando Hamcation I think the estimated $700 price is cheap. I was thinking it would be closer to $1000. There is a similar product from Yaesu, the DMU-2000 with a list price of $1400 and it does not even include the monitor which you must supply yourself. I think the street price is possibly under $1000 though. Now, we do not know how close or far apart the DMU-2000 is from the P3 but it does set at least one price point. Another price point is the LP-PAN and sound-card plus computer configuration. If you buy an external USB sound card then you are starting to get closer to the ball park area of the $700 (of course, depending on all kinds of factors that are too variable to make any close comparison). I bet though that many hams would gladly pay several hundred dollars more for the P3 to avoid the hassle of doing up their own solution using the LP-PAN approach. About Microsoft selling Windows 7 at a profit for 50 cents! Your joking of course. I have a number of good friends on the Microsoft Windows 7 product team (I live about 4 miles from the Microsoft campus) and they would beg to differ with you. They have, depending on how you measure it which is not easy, a multi-billion dollar development effort that they need to recapture by selling Windows 7. Or, look at it another way, their first several million copies of Windows 7 are still being sold at a huge loss. You can actually read their shareholders reports and find out some of the cost for developing Windows 7. As for me, I will buy the P3. Cost? It is not so high that it would be totally unreasonable I am betting. 73, phil, K7PEH On Feb 13, 2010, at 8:23 AM, KM4VX wrote: > > What drives the price of a new product more than anything is marketing. > Microsoft could sell Windows 7 at profit for 50 cents but charges $149.00. > The P-3 price is being defined here on the reflector by those of us who are > so enthusiastic about Elecraft; hams may be called "cheap" but have > considerable discretionary spending available. What drives the price of a new product more than anything is marketing. Microsoft could sell Windows 7 at profit for 50 cents but charges $149.00. The P-3 price is being defined here on the reflector by those of us who are so enthusiastic about Elecraft; hams may be called "cheap" but have considerable discretionary spending available. The P-3 could sell for a few hundred dollars at profit, similar to other panadapters. Instead, we are talking about more than double that price. Companies recover their R&D investments over time, and the higher the selling price the shorter the R&D investment recovery period. How about a breather here? The $700 price being tossed around is a bit absurd in my view. Yeah, many of us can and will pay it, but its okay to talk about 3-400 dollars and Elecraft would do just fine. Re: [Elecraft] K3EZ Program fails to retain memories on computer
I have found that by downloading the K3_EZ program several times ( hopefully as administrator ) the memories are now being retained, although the program freezes upon closing. I like K3_EZ better than the other software out there, primarily because of the band stacking on 60 meters and the memory bank under the memories icon. The author has given us without charge a nice program, and I hope over time he will take another look at the glitches the program experiences with Windows 7 Pro among others. I see many people have the same problem with K3EZ; the program loses frequency memory on the computer after shutdown. I know several people have asked Elecraft to develop a program so that the computer would control memories on K-3, but that is a different issue. [Elecraft] K-3 EBAY Scam of Feb 6
K-3 selling on E-Bay 6 Feb (Item # 300394149258) fully loaded with all filters main and sub-receiver and EVERYTHING else with "BUY NOW" price of $1,600.00 and 12 bids to $1,200.00. I reported this obvious hacked scam ad to E-Bay and the Ad disappeared within an hour this morning. I love a good deal but have noticed an increase in scams on E-Bay and QTH.com over the past few weeks. [Elecraft] K-3 Adapting 8 -pin mic plug to rear mic input 3.5mm socket
I see the question has been asked but not really answered. Is there an adapter that would allow one to plug the 8 pin mic plug from a desk mic into the rear mic 3.5mm input socket? I have a new K-3 and a 4-pin xlr desk mic with the Kenwood 8 pin plug cable on the other end for use with Elecraft radios. I am sure it will work fine when plugged into the mic socket on the front of the K-3 and properly configured. I would like to plug it into the rear of the K-3, without destroying the cable by wiring it for a 3.5mm stereo plug. Is there an adapter out there? If not, is anyone making and selling a correctly configured adapter cable? I will also be using a foot switch. I haven't tried SSB with the K-3 yet, but after a few weeks I find the CW mode superb with the 400hz filter and DSP. Thank you fellow K-3 lovers. I am keeping my K-2, but this K-3 is really something. And, "NO" I am not qualified to wire this up myself as many of us are-- but many are not. [Elecraft] K2 Use of KUSB cable with the K2
I realize this topic is not new, but it is confusing to review the archives when searching this question. The KUSB is sold to support the K3. It is not advertised to support the K2. Can it be used out of the box to support the K2? Can I plug it into the serial port of the K2 (okay not a real serial port but looks like it) and then connect it to a USB port on my laptop without damaging the K2? I thought there might be a good reason why ELECRAFT does not list it for use with the K2 as well as the K3. I seem to recall a warning about damaging the K2 when using the wrong interface, but can't find it in the K2 manual or module building instructions. Any help would be appreciated. [Elecraft] K3 #3857 Up and Running-- CW clicks??
Although I love my K2, which I am keeping, I now have a K3 on the air today. Fantastic rig. I may even get a chance to operate once I configure this amazing radio. I am experiencing the same problem, and don't see a resolution to the problem on the relector. I have tried my straight key and paddle, and get clicks when sending CW. I send at 15 WPM. Re: [Elecraft] Fw: My predicament
This is an obvious scam and it happens daily. Information that it comes from Nigeria just confirms this. There are no honest e-mails from Nigerians; believe it. I don't understand why these e-mails from the the Ukraine and Nigeria continue, but they must enjoy some success. They are usually writen in poor English, offer absurd sales or purchases and ask you to send money in advance to unconfirmed addresses. One way to protect yourself is NEVER send money in advance to unconfirmed addresses. This is easy with Call Signs because one would only send money or equipment to addresses confirmed by QRZ.com. If we HAMS follow some basic rules we should avoid these scams. These offers are appearing more frequently now on HAM ads. I agree a fool is born every minute, but HAMS seem to be brighter than most groups. I make no apologies to Nigerians. I have worked at the U.S. Embassy in Lagos; there is no greater concentration of criminals than Nigeria. Many thanks to VE3GAM for identifying the IP address. Re: [Elecraft] K2 with KDSP2 and KAF2?
I checked with the person selling the K-2 who says he has both the KDSP2 and KAF2 installed in one K-2 and told him it is impossible. He said he is the original owner of the radio, had both installed by ELECRAFT and has the invoice to prove it. I told him to ask for a refund, since both cannot occupy the same space at the same time. Einstein would be proud of me. Re: [Elecraft] [MM] W2 Wattmeter
Thank you for the advice and wisdom always found on this Reflector. We can each draw our own conclusions. The K-2 built in meter is probably as accurate as the W2 at 5 watts, and the more expensive stand alone units have little to offer me operating QRP. Those flashing lights are cool on many of the latest meters, but the absence of increased accuracy over what comes with the radio anyway is more important. The expertise available on this Reflector is unmatched in the hobby. [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter
W2 WATTMETER I was doing some research and considering buying the Elecraft W2 for use with my 2 K-2s and read the very negative reviews of the W2's accuracy on E-Ham. I wonder if anyone would care to refute the E-HAM reviews or offer positive comments about the W2's accuracy. At this point I would have to choose the AUTEK or OAK HILLS meters over the W2. Considering the cost of the W2 and Elecraft's attention to quality I would expect a far more accurate meter than the reviews would indicate. Many thanks. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/W2-Wattmeter-tp4242517p4242517.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Thanks Don. Do you have power out of the K2? Set the ATU menu to CALP and connect a dummy load. If the K2 power is set at the extreme low power settings, that may not be enough to do a TUNE. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] K2-- Auto Tuner Issue
Thank you Dave for the information. I had accidently put the radio into "TEST" mode. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Monitoring outgoing PSK31 Signal
I appreciate the helpful responses. My objective was to hear the audio output of the PSK31 signal from the K2. That appears to be impossible and probably unnecessary provided the ALC reading is correct. I believe my ALC was a bit high, and after lowering it to just above one bar on the meter I am able to work DX stations throughout Europe and into Latin America with 5 watts using a decent vertical. I don't need the IMD meter but will keep the recommendations on file. QRP is a real challenge with PSK31; otherwise I think I would use E-Mail. Nice that there is something in this hobby for everyone. KM4VX wrote: > > I have searched the archives but cannot find anything concerning how to > monitor the outgoing PSK31 signal from the K2. [Elecraft] K-2 LP-PAN Panadapter FS
I have a one day old LP-PAN Panadapter from Telepostinc configured for the K-2 For Sale. It was factory assembled and arrived yesterday (Friday). I paid $235.00 shipped. You can have it in original double box shipped with everything for $180.00. I am selling because it would take a miracle to configure this to work with my K-2 and Signalink interface (which work perfectly otherwise). I am conserving miracles this month. I do not have the patience or interest to study further the compexities of this wonderful invention. Trades? Please reply off-line. Re: [Elecraft] K-2 and Panadaptor
Don : Thanks for the info. I see where it is possible for the P-3 to work with radios other than the K-3 with some modification, possibly to theP-3 and the particular radio. Not clear. I think as a stand-alone unit the P-3 would be of interest to me working with the K-2. My second K-2 has the Z1 buffer amp installed for use with an LP-Pan so I am going to wait and see if I need to buy an LP-Pan or maybe the P-3. I may buy neither anyway, but I like to explore options. I have a PRO 111 and find the scope very useful to identify other signals within range. My K-2 may not need anything further and is a delight to operate. I haven't found any use for the installed Z1 as yet. Ron KM4VX - Original Message - From: Don Wilhelm-4 (via Nabble) To: KM4VX Sent: 8/15/2009 8:54:56 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K-2 and Panadaptor Ron, Yes, LP-PAN is available with an input frequency to match the K2, see http://www.telepostinc.com/LP-PAN.html I don't know about the adaptability of the P3 - we will have to wait until after the weekend to get any more details on the P3. [Elecraft] Amplifier for K-2/10
I know about the KPA/100 option for the K-2, but wonder if there are any alternatives for obtaining 100 watts output or better from the K-2. I am looking for an amplifier that might produce 100 watts or better with an input of only 10 watts from the K-2. If anyone knows of one out there it would be interesting to have that information posted here. I would find a separate amplifier unit more convenient than an internal upgrade to the K-2. Thanks. Re: [Elecraft] Blue Displays and Visual Acuity
I started the thread a few days ago as my first posting on the Elecraft Reflector and didn't appreciate the number of opthamologist hams using Elecraft. Thanks for the many inputs and it appears impractical to try and change the display. Personally, I find either green or orange as a background psychologically unpleasant; neither color has positive connotations. If blue impractcal I would like to see white on black similar to the older Yaesu rigs or an option in the IC 756 PRO III. Some colors are positive and others are negative. The images green and orange bring to mind are not positive (swamp, nausea, dull, boring) I don't foresee making any after-market changes here but hope Elecraft will offer some diplay options in the future. Selecting which display color option is obviously a very personal choice. It would be nice to have a choice. gdaught6 wrote: > > Alan wrote... > >> I'm really hesitant about challenging such an accepted authority as AC7AC >> on any topic.
