[Elecraft] K3 Relay Noise

2009-03-07 Thread Kenneth Moorman
I am probably am just hearing "things", but for some time I have heard what
sounds like a relay switch, just once, in my K3, #1292, while it is powered
off. Is there anything that would be still powered and "busy" while the K3
is supposedly "OFF" that could be doing this? I have no other equipment in
the area, and my ear is only about 18" from the K3 when I hear it. Anyone
else hearing this? This morning when I heard this noise the K3 had not been
powered "ON" since last night. I power all my radio equipment with solar
charged batteries, FWIW.

[Elecraft] OT: Digital Signals on 20M

2009-03-27 Thread Kenneth Moorman
For the past several days I have been seeing a couple of powerful digital
signals, S9+, between 14.018 to 14.032MHz. They seem to be comprised of 4
or 5 discrete frequencies rapidly moving around in a bandwidth of about
2Khz. When working with a narrow filter it is possible to work through
them, with difficulty. With a wide filter, 2.8KHz set to the center of
their bandwidth it sounds like a group of castanets clicking away with
slightly different tones. I might have just discounted them but for the
fact that I have just recently gotten a "poor man's" panadapter using a
Rockmite and Z1 amp from Clifton Labs with the Rocky software monitoring
my K3's IF output. These two signals have been here every time I get on 20M
and are quite impressive in the amount of bandwidth they occupy. I have not
seen this on any other band. Forgive my ignorance of digital modes, but I
just don't recall hearing this sort of signal before. Can anyone let me
know what this might be?

I don't have a beam, but it looks like it could possibly be coming from

strong in Oregon as it seems to be here in coastal Virginia, which seems to
be consistent.

I hear them S9+ at 270 degrees from South Central PA.
Although I'm not sure how directional my beam (Force 12/C3) is.

[Elecraft] Use of PC power supplies with K2

2010-10-03 Thread Kenneth Moorman
I would like to hear from anyone who has attempted to use one of the small
external PC AC adapter power supplies with a K2. They are, of course,
switchers, so I am not very hopeful. I have found a couple of possible
candidates, one a Meanwell P40A-4PSJ rated at 13.8 volts at 2.66 amps and
the other an APS AD-740U-1138, rated at 13.8 volts at 2.8 amps. They seem
to have somewhat comparable specs as to regulation, ripple, and protection.
I suspect they would be pretty bad on RFI, so even though they can be had
cheaply, they may not be worth the grief. My fallback position would likely
be the little unit from Gamma Research, HPS-1a, but that will be twice as
heavy and probably ten times more expensivebut from what I've read about
it, it is not very noisy electrically. I would really appreciate any
thoughts, especially those with first hand experience. This would only be
for portable operation, not "normal" use. Thanks.

[Elecraft] Use of PC power supplies with K2

2010-10-03 Thread Kenneth Moorman
Thanks John,

I should have stated that this would be the K2/10. These little switchers
are the sort that powered laptops. They are sealed units with single output
voltages, not the boxes that go into the desktop machines with multiple
output voltages. I should have been clearer about this.

Ken, NU4I

My summary comment would be that power supplies run the gamut wrt RFI
problems, and that one might well have to proceed by trial-and-error. I have
always rejected use of the PC-type power supply because they usually come
with a spaghetti of different wires intended for different functions within
the computer. The small Radio Shack 25 amp supplies are about the same
volume as a typical PC supply, and a great deal more congenial
(cosmetically) than the latter.

[Elecraft] K3 in AM-Sync Mode Receiving WWV

2009-11-16 Thread Kenneth Moorman
I have been trying out the new AM-Sync mode by listening to WWV on its 5
frequencies and am seeing something that I wonder is a "problem" for my K3
(#1292) or is it being seen by others as well. I have observed that on the
10MHz WWV frequency only, that my K3 will momentarily "unlock" with the
frequency jumping either up or down by as much as 200 Hz. The frequency
quickly, less than a second, will be corrected, and all is well again. This
occurs at what appears to be entirely random timing, from several minutes,
to as often as a few seconds. I haven't noticed this happening on any of
the other WWV frequencies that I have observed, being all of the rest except
2.5MHz which is not open to me this morning. I did notice this yesterday on
10MHz, but did not check the other frequencies until today. I find it
difficult to believe that WWV is having "jumps" in its 10MHz transmission.
Has anyone else noticed this, or do I need to be giving Elecraft help desk a
call?

Yes, I can clearly see this happening on my "panadaptor" lash-up using an

This is exactly what's happening, and we're looking into a possible
change in the way we handle it.

For now, you can leave VFO auto-tracking turned off when listening to
WWV (tap CWT until the 'T' icon turns off). You can tune the signal in
manually until the PLL locks (+/- 10 Hz), or tap SPOT to have it track
the signal long enough to lock.

[Elecraft] Using K2/100 on QRP

2008-08-25 Thread Kenneth Moorman
I have the K2/100 with the KPA100 and KAT100 mounted in the separate EC2
enclosure. I would like to use the K2/10 in a portable situation
independently, leaving the 100 watt components here in the shack. I have no
concern with the uncabling part of the operation, but I am wondering if
there is some menu item(s) I must reset after getting the K2/10 separated
from its high-powered components. This is the first time I have
contemplated such operation since obtaining the amp/tuner about 18 months
ago, and I can't remember what if anything I did to the menu items to get
both "boxes" working together. I feel sure that this has been done by many
folks who can quickly set me on the right path. Thanks.

RE: [Elecraft] KAT3 settings saved per band

I do something similar with ANT1 and ANT2 with ANT2 having an external tuner
out at the antenna feedline base, and ANT1 always being tuned by the
internal tuner, and would like some way to associate the ANT1 as AUTO and
ANT2 as BYPASS (or vice versa), plus the ability to use it as it now is for
those who don't have this sort of antenna set up. Just a thought.

I use two doublet antennas, one hooked to ANT1 through a balun for 40M
which uses the KAT3 tuner, and a second (ANT2) in which I bypass the KAT3
and use an external Palstar BT1500A balanced tuner for 30-10M. Currently,
when changing bands I have to remember to bypass/set the KAT3 correctly. I
would like to see the KAT3 bypass/auto setting saved per band as is
commonly done on other rigs, such as the IC756.

RE: [Elecraft] Suggestions for KDSP2 Firmware Revisions

2007-06-06 Thread Kenneth Moorman
I agree with Jeff that the KDSP2 is awkward to use. I will admit that it is
my first and only experience with a DSP, so maybe this "comes with the
territory". I tend to just leave mine on all the time, as I haven't
committed the button push cycle to memory yet. It would be nice to have
"Bypass" cycle with the DSP bandwidths as Jeff has proposed.

Subject: [Elecraft] Suggestions for KDSP2 Firmware Revisions

The KDSP2 DSP filter for the K2 works great, in my opinion, but I wonder if
it would be possible in a future KDSP2 firmware revision to implement some
or all of the following three suggestions, which would increase my CW
operating convenience:

1. Reduce the number of button presses necessary to put the KDSP2 into
bypass mode (turn it off). Currently, it takes a button tap, two button
holds, and one more tap to turn it off, if you just turned on the rig, and
two button taps to turn it back on. I find that the two button holds are
the most time-consuming and bothersome parts of the process, so my
suggestion is that the number of button presses to turn off the KDSP2 could
be reduced to two taps and no holds by making the "dSP On / bYP" menu entry
*always* come up first when the DSP menu is accessed.

2. Make the KDSP2 remember whether or not it is in bypass (off) mode, so
that its state would not change when power is turned off and on. That is,
the KDSP2 would not have to always be on on power-up.

3. Make the KDSP2 remember the currently selected DSP filter (CF1, CF2,
CF3, or CF4), so that the same filter would stay in effect when power is
turned off and on. Currently, the rig seems to remember the selected
crystal filter, but not the selected DSP filter, when power is cycled off
and on.

I like to put the KDSP2 in bypass mode when tuning around the band in order
to have a wider passband, so I can hear what's going on around me. It
appears that the maximum bandwidth of the KDSP2 in CW mode is 800 Hz, which
is too narrow for my taste when tuning around. Once I stop tuning and focus

on a particular signal, I often turn the KDSP2 back on to eliminate QRM.
This habit results in my having to do a lot of button pressing to turn the
KDSP2 off and on repeatedly. Also, when I turn the rig on, I'm initially
turning around, so I want the KDSP2 to start out in bypass mode, but it
defaults to on, even if I had it off when I last used the rig.

Another advantage of being able to easily keep the KDSP2 turned off is that
having it off reduces power consumption. When operating portable from the
internal battery, I would like to be able to make the KDSP2 stay off until I

return home, rather than having to turn it off each time I power-up.

As an alternative to suggestion (1), above, a slightly different setup that
would make me happy would be the addition of a fifth state, bypass, when the

K2's AFIL button is held repeatedly. That is, after cycling through the
four DSP filters (CF1-CF4), the fifth setting would be bypass mode, in which

the KDSP2 would be turned off, and next would be CF1 again, and so forth.

Another alternative to suggestion (1) would be to increase the maximum DSP
bandwidth in the CW mode to equal the maximum bandwidth of the crystal
filters (2.49 kHz, I think). If one of the four DSP filters could be set to

a very wide bandwidth, then invoking this filter would have approximately
the same effect as turning the KDSP2 off (except that it wouldn't decrease
power consumption).

Do others agree that some of my suggestions would be improvements or are you

happy with the KDSP2 just as it is? Please let Lyle, KK7P, know your
preferences, as I believe he is the KDSP2's designer, and please let me know

too.

Thanks for listening to my ruminations, 73 & 72,
Jeff

[Elecraft] Spurious tone on K2

2006-02-02 Thread Kenneth Moorman
I have K2 #4456 that is generating a tone starting at 14360.66 kHz and ending
at 14365.65 kHz. The tone is adjustable by both AF and RF gain controls, is
not a function of which antenna is selected, or any antenna connected. It is
steady in amplitude at 30 db over S9, and gradually rises in pitch as the
receiver is tuned through the range stated, starting about 800 Hz to probably
over 1 kHz.

The K2 is equipped as follows:

KSB2, KNB2, KAT2, K160RX, and KAF2.

Does anyone know what this is? I have not closely re-read the manual, but I
don't remember anything about this sort of spurious output over such a range of
frequencies. The unit seems to be operating just fine in all other respects.
Any thoughts will be appreciated.

length, as close to the feed point of each antenna as possible to reduce losses
in the coax from shack to attic. I would plan to use a relay to select between
the antennas, the placement of same which would keep the coax length to about 6
feet after the relay to one antenna, and zero feet to the other. Directly
prior to the relay (toward the transceiver) I would place the T1. I would use
a small reed relay mounted in a pill box or something similar, to plug into the
external tune jack on the side of the T1 to initiate the TUNE cycle, and
observe the SWR on a separate SWR meter in the basement shack to know when the
tune-up is finished. My concern is the heat buildup in the attic during our
hot, sticky Virginia summers. Has anyone else tried to do this, and how did
the T1 take the heat? It's a great little tuner, but I doubt it was designed
to take 120+ degree heat for extended periods. Any thoughts and observations
will be appreciated. BTW, 10 watts from my K2 will be the max expected power
for this setup to handle.

Ray,

What kind of ATU are you using to do this? I tried to send this directly to

Quite a bit of QRN here, too, Kevin.

Well, here I am again in NC - spent some time Fri and Sat working on antenna
setup at our no-outside-antennas NC second home. My attempt at loading the
aluminum ridge vent came to naught (more on that another time). Current
configuration is an ATU at one end of the attic with a balun and 25 ft of
fat wire stretched out inside the attic and 25 ft of very thin black wire -
very, very hard to see - stretched outside the attic.

Was anxious to try it on ECN but at 20m net time I was still paying the bill
for a little family supper at Elmo's diner.

Fired up the KX-1 in time for the 40m net - heard Tom (about 579) tell Kevin
(about 339) about the storms. Heard W0CZ about 589 w/QSB, VE3XL about 569,
K2VCO, K4JPN, all Q5 but weaker. Heard AB8KJ 589 but a bit off freq. Tried
calling a couple of times in hope someone would hear me and relay, but no
such luck. Hope to QNI next week when I'm back in VA with a real antenna!

[Elecraft] T1 ATU

2006-05-15 Thread Kenneth Moorman
I tried to use my Elecraft T1 ATU this weekend at a special event station
outing on Jamestown Island, VA as an adjunct to the main station. I used my
NC2030 on 20 mtrs, and ATS-3 on 40 Mtrs, both about 5 watts output, or that was
to be the plan. The antenna was pretty poor, an end fed wire of roughly 100
feet sloping from about 10 feet up to about 30 to 35 feet, with about 20 feet
of counterpoise wire under it. I used a BNC to banana adapter on the antenna
output of the T1 with the antenna to red, counterpoise to black. Initially the
T1 tuned this wire on 20 mtrs to an SWR of 1.0:1, according to the Info
function of the T1. I made one contact on 20 to a station in FL, but the band
conditions weren't too good at the time, so I switched over to 40. The tuner
refused to tune this situation. It would not even start a tune cycledead
silence, no relay activity. I tried different frequencies on 40 with same
luck, and now the Info function of the T1 showed an SWR of 9.9:1. I went back
to 20, but this time it refused to tune here either, stuck at 9.9:1 SWR. So I
packed it all up for the day. When I got back home, I tried the T1 with the
ATS-3, and my K2 in CAL S mode, and it tuned up the dipoles and loop antenna
here just as always, first time.

My question is, if the SWR of the random wire in the field was so high that the
T1 couldn't handle it, would it not even attempt to tune it? I would have
thought it would have searched around for some time, then stopped at it's best
shot. Does this T1 sound like a normal one, or is there something intermittent
going on with it? Just hoping someone out there has had a similar experience
and could offer a bit of advice on what's going on.

Thanks,

Ken, NU4I

Re: [Elecraft] 10.118.288 dead carrier

2016-02-16 Thread Kenneth Moorman
It's S9+5dB here in coastal VA and seems to be loudest from my NE quadrant
as I use my K9AY Loop to receive it. Using CW Skimmer to observe it I can
see some sort of rather deep drops in the received signal lasting only
several milliseconds that is not related to any QSB. I also see upper and
lower sideband info that is about 100Hz or less which seems to be also
present at times.

Yep - I hear it too. It's strongest on a 60 degree heading from San Jose,
CA - not particularly helpful as this includes most of the NA continent.

I had a 20M PSK31 QSO once with an OM in NY who must have been called away.
His PSK31 idle tone was constant over a long holiday weekend until he

It happens.

CW Skimmer is a great tool for cracking the K1N pileups because it decodes
the calls of folks calling as well as who just sent 599, and you can click
on the relevant decoder dot to move instantly to that frequency. I'm using
it with an LP-Pan in what Skimmer calls the Softrock-IF mode.

One rub, though, is that the pileups are so wide that it often is not
possible to go split, listen on VFO A, and transmit on the second VFO,.
because Skimmer tracks VFOA and the action is too far above K1N's frequency
to display on my monitor. My K3 has the separate subRX, happily, so I can
invert things - listen to K1N on VFO B, while tuning up the band on VFO A
looking for the last successful caller. Works amazingly well.

[Elecraft] Parts of My K2 Station For Sale

2019-04-18 Thread Kenneth Moorman
I have decided to sell some of my favorite amateur radio items and hopefully
find homes for them where they can be used more often than I now can use
them.

KPA100 100 watt Amplifier

KAT100 100 watt ATU

EC2 Enclosure

The KPA100 and the KAT100 have been installed in the EC2 Enclosure making it
a perfect match to the K2 Transceiver in appearance and function. This is a
perfectly operational unit with no cosmetic issues and comes from a
nonsmoking home. Current pricing for the amplifier and ATU (exclusive from
the enclosure which is no longer available) is $1020. I would like $700
plus shipping.

Gamma Research HPS-1A 13.8V Power Supply

This supply is rated at 5 amps continuous or 22 amps at 25% duty cycle and
is able to power 100 watt RF amplifiers at normal CW or SSB operation. Its
dimensions are 3.37" x 1.55" x 5.25" and it weighs only 1.25 lbs. It comes
with an adapter to the K2/10 and Anderson Power Poles to the first unit
above. Current price is $229. It works perfectly with no cosmetic issues.
I would like $150 plus shipping.

Begali Magnetic Traveler Iambic Paddle

This key is in perfect condition both mechanically and cosmetically and has
(sadly) only been used at home. It is designed for use in the field and has
folding "wings" both for stability and protection of the aluminum finger
pieces. Its current price is about $290. I would like $190 plus shipping.

Contact me direct (only) at:

nu4i(at)cox.net

I can supply photos of all units upon request and PayPal is fine.

[Elecraft] KPod "Memory Helper"

2018-09-28 Thread Kenneth Moorman
I have had my KPod for several months and have enjoyed using it to save
having to use knobs and pushbuttons on my K3 and keeping my hands nearer the
keyboard and paddles. But I have had a problem remembering which KPod
buttons perform which functions. Cheat sheets just seemed to get in the way
or get lost so I wondered what I could do to make my KPod more user
friendly. I made the following modification to my KPod to put the name of
each used function directly beside the buttons so I could quickly find what
I wanted to do, and made it very easy to change the function names as I
reconfigured the device. The links below show a couple of views of what I
did. Basically, using some double sided pc board I fashioned a couple of
"wings" that I eventually attached to the existing device using the screws
that help hold it together at its top face. After shaping and drilling the
pieces, I soldered the pieces together to form each "wing", spray-painted
them, glued into each top face on each "wing" two small rare-earth magnets.
Then I made two plastic cover plates the same size as the top faces, drilled
and mounted two more of the magnets taking care to get the poles correct
with the lower ones in the wings. Then I typed up a couple of label sheets,
placed them on the top faces of the wings, and placed the plastic covers
over them to finish the project. It makes a very neat way to easily locate
and reconfigure the KPod functions. If anyone has more interest in this I
have several more pictures of the way I did mine but I'm sure this idea
could be fashioned in many ways from other material you may have at hand.

Recent firmware releases allows continued operation even if error

sometimes -- like at a DXpedition or during an emergency -- the show

Subject: [Elecraft] Major Flaw in the K3

I have found a really major flaw in the K3. It can be fixed with an
accessory but it will be very expensive. The flaw can be a great
frustration. Fortunately, I have been able to fully document what causes
it.

Here it is - the receiver hears entirely too well.

I am hearing all sorts of DX, particularly on 40 and 20 meters, where I
spend most of my time. I am hearing a lot of rare DX stations that no
one else is calling.

The frustration is that when I call them they can't hear me. Often not
at all, while at other times they try to get my call but do not manage
it. Just because they are S0 or S1 in the K3 is not an excuse; they are
solid Q5 copy. This is not a single isolated incident; this has happened
to me repeatedly. Of course, once these stations have K3's the problem
will probably go away; then they will be able to hear me. But in the
mean time this issue must be dealt with.

I see two possible solutions. One is to turn off the receiver preamp and
turn on the attenuator that Elecraft has so thoughtfully provided - this
makes me suspect that Wayne knew all along that this would be a problem
- the other is to add a 1500 watt solid state linear with built in
antenna tuner and full QSK. I suspect that this is the fix that Eric has
in mind.

[Elecraft] PLL Control Voltage Range

2011-03-28 Thread Kenneth Moorman
I have been having some flakey operation with the main receiver in SN 1292
recently which I believe I have cured for the moment by re-calibrating the
main VCO. As suggested in the manual, I have been observing the PLL control
voltages on the VFO B display. Depending on the band, it is varying from a
low of about 1.5 volts to about 5.1 volts. I also notice that there is
sometime a rather large difference between the PLL1 and PLL2 control
voltages (about 2 volts) on a given band, but not in all cases. These
voltages do not change much over several tens of KHz tuning on any given
band. Do these values and actions sound reasonable? I don't recall seeing
a table of acceptable PLL 1/2 control voltage ranges by band. Thanks for any
insight,

Ken, NU4I
