[Elecraft] FS: K2 S/N 5240
I have for sale a K2 serial number 5240. It includes the following: KAT2 Automatic Antenna Tuner KSB SSB Adapter KIO2 Aux I/O Module Finger Dimple (not installed) It includes all manuals. I'm also including a DL1 dummy load. NOTE*** This radio does have the PLL click issue. This means that you can sometimes hear a click every 5 KHz or so when you tune the VFO. It seems to do this more often when you tune down in frequency. I don't have the time to troubleshoot this problem and from what I'm told, this affects many K2s to some degree. Personally, I never heard the clicks until they were brought to my attention. Of course, I used it for PSK 99% of the time so I guess I didn't see them would be more accurate. $750.00 OBO w/shipping included to lower 48. Money order or PayPal only please. 73, Kevin N8IQ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE: [Elecraft] PLL Clicks
I attached an antenna and I do hear clicks when I turn the VFO in both directions while on 40 meters. Probably due to the strong SW stations. I sold the radio last week and I had to take it back and refund the gentleman's money because of the clicks. Is this something that is inherent in the K2 design and affects all radios to some degree? [Elecraft] PLL Clicks
My K2 has the PLL Click problem when I turn the VFO. I've tried running CAL PLL with the covers on, but no luck. The strange part is that I only hear the clicks when I DECREASE the frequency with the VFO. As I tune up in frequency, I hear absolutely no clicks. When I tune down in frequency I get very loud clicks every 5 KHz or so. I can hear them with no antenna attached. Any idea where I should look first? RE: [Elecraft] Wayne...Eric...K2 with USB anytime soon??
Actually, I'm working on a USB interface for the K2. My prototype worked quite well. It only received but what I saw on the waterfall looked good. The part of the design I was most concerned about (USB) worked well. It's a compound USB device - hub with soundcard and serial port. I'm in the process of designing the first PCB that contains all the circuitry. The prototype I mentioned was bits and pieces of hardware strung across my workbench. No drivers other than what comes with Windows XP are required. Unfortunately, I haven't had much time to work on it lately. I have a consulting business (FPGA design) in addition to my normal day job and I'm deep into a Gigabit Ethernet design at the moment. Not enough hours in the day. Back in 78, making an QYX Intelligent communicating Typewriter - perform TTY over an RS-232 port, was a big comms deal. The PC quickly overtook these early PC devices. Whether President Carter's daughter really had one - was a rumor I had heard at a software conference then. Probably not true. I do know - the Wall Street Journal, ran an ad for our product, full page - when we completed the product for Exxon. Being able to transmit or receive a document, from your desktop typewriter - was a big deal, in 1978. Messages, documents, etc. All based on TTY and RS-232. Of course, all over phone or data lines. TTY and RS-232 standards, at that time, had been around for eons then. Early 80's PC's did the same thing. I also think doing it via HF radio, is also a neat ham activity. Anyhoo - USB would be nice on a K2. I'm too long winded. Fred, N3CSY __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! RE: [Elecraft] Computer control issues - unreliable firmware?
Actually, I'm designing one as we speak. It's a compound USB device containing a sound card and serial port. I did a proof of concept with the design strung out on my bench. I never used it on the air but the USB side of things worked quite well. The signals on the waterfall looked very good. I tested it with Digipan 2.0, MixW, and Ham Radio Deluxe. I was never able to get my current external USB interface to work with HRD so I was very pleased. I'm purposely designing it to use the Windows-supplied drivers so no driver installation CD is required. This I hope will make it work with a wide range of software programs. However, it requires Windows XP equipped computers. I'm not sure if many people are still using the older versions of Windows. Anyway, I'm designing a prototype circuit board to test it with the K2. If that's successful, the next stage is to redesign the PC board again to get it inside the K2. I just have the base K2 so I need to determine a shape for the PCB that will work inside a basic K2 as well as a fully-loaded K2. I'm sure it's quite crowded inside with all the options. I think I might have to separate the USB Type B connector from the rest of the board in order to make installation more flexible. The design is still in the early stages but I'll be interested in enlisting the help of some testers in the future. If you'd like to help test this contraption in exchange for a completed product when released, then send me an e-mail. RE: [Elecraft] ridge vent as antenna?
Ray, I also live in a deed restricted community. I ran coax and DC power through the wall of my den. Once outside, I ran it underground to the back wall of the house. At the peak of the roof in the back, I mounted an SG-237 Smarttuner. I then took 300 feet of enameled wire and ran it around the perimeter of my roof. This created a 300 foot horizontal loop. It's around 2 WL long at 40 meters so the radiation pattern is not shooting straight up on 40 meters and above. It's a 1 story house so it's not very high up. The wire is pushed up under the shingles as much as possible. It's VERY hard to notice the antenna. I'm in Florida so a snowy roof is not going to happen. I'm not sure about rain since we are in the dry season here and I can't remember the last time in rained. I'll know better this spring/fall. How does it work? I've worked France, Bulgaria, Italy, Estonia, Ascension Island among others with my K2 just on PSK31 so far (I know, I need to work on my rusty CW skills). About 20 different countries in the last month (I've only had it in operation since 2/13/06). I had a ragchew with F6FZG last Saturday like he was next door. I'm more than pleased with its operation and the fact that it's practically invisible. The Smarttuner keeps the antenna in tune automatically. There are certainly much better antennas, but this one works great considering the restrictions. YMMV I'm sure. Has anyone had any experience loading an aluminum ridge vent as an antenna?? We just bought a second home, which is lovely (definition: my wife is thrilled with it!) but has restrictive covenants - no outside antennas. Grrr. I have mounted an ATU in the attic and attached a 1:1 balun directly to it, with about 25 ft of wire going out from each side - in other words, a non-resonant dipole - all inside the attic. It loads OK on all bands 80 thru 10 and I've made several decent contacts with it. What I don't like is that there is a lot of junk in the attic, like AC ductwork, tho most of it seems non-metallic. Mostly I don't like the aluminum ridge vent that runs the length of the attic - so I mounted the wire several feet below the ridge of the roof. Not sure how this affects the antenna, but it can't be very good. I am contemplating using the ridge vent as part of the antenna: I could position the ATU at one end of the attic, connect one side to the ridge vent and the other side to a stealth wire that I could run to a low tree or maybe the peak of the garage roof. Has anyone had any experience using ridge vents as antenna (or part of an antenna)? Effect of rain wetting the roof shingles? Craig, The horizontal loop is working great. I tried getting into the 20 meter net but I experienced massive QRN just after it started. Turned out, my Grandson turned on the big screen TV in the family room. I heard that's the downside of having a horizontal loop on the roof and they're not kidding. This morning I worked ES3RM in Estonia on 20 meter PSK31 using 8 watts(!). 20+ years ago, I never worked Europe with my Yaesu FT101E at 100 watts (just about the same sunspot cycle). Had first 2 QSOs this morning (Indiana and Oregon) on 20 CW with an indoor dipole. Must be nice. I never was able to contact anyone on my indoor dipole. Oh well. I should be on the air this weekend though, hopefully for the Elecraft net on Sunday. I bought an SGC Smartuner and plan on putting up a horizontal loop on my roof this weekend. I spent last weekend making cables and routing the feedline through the wall of my den and into a waterproof box outside where the lightning arrestor is located. Now, I just need to run it outside and up to the roof and run the antenna wire. I figure it's my best option with deed restrictions and all. I think it'll be quite stealthy and work better than the vertical dipole I originally planned. It'll be 2 WL long on 40 meters so I hope it's not too much of a cloud warmer on 20 and 40 meters. It might even work half way decent on 80 meters. Kevin N8IQ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE: [Elecraft] Finally made first contact with K1
Nigel, Thanks, but I already have a copy in PDF format that I pulled off of the ARRL website. I also have the ARRL Operating Manual that makes mention of the change. I'm sorry, but I worded my question poorly. I actually was more interested in what hams *commonly do* when they live in a district different from where they were originally licensed. I understand you don't have to add the / + number but it feels strange to me not to add the /4. The Operating Manual says It's routine not to hear the identifier. To me, if I send CQ de N8IQ, the station responding would understandably think I was in the 8th district and might be disappointed (if they were working towards WAS, etc...) if they find that I'm really in 4-land. I guess in regards to a CQ transmission, the use of the identifier would be helpful. Thanks everyone for your responses. RE: [Elecraft] Stupid? Top this!
Ha! I did the exact same thing. Only I molded a dish out of aluminum foil and started etching my board in my bedroom. As my etching container started to self destruct, I quickly opened my bedroom window and threw it outside. A half second more and the whole thing would have melted and landed on the carpet. Kevin N8IQ/4 -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Dan Allen Sent: Wednesday, January 04, 2006 9:30 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Stupid? Top this! When I was about 12 years old (1958/1959), printed circuit boards were exotic technology that was unavailable in kits. I wanted badly to handle one, and learn how they are made. A magazine (I believe it was Popular Electronics) ran an article on a 40 meter, transistorized QRP transmitter. I took the schematic, and (to the best of my abilities at that time) drew out a printed circuit board mask by hand. As there was no electronic supply stores in the area (South Carolina) at that time, I saved up my pennies and ordered a blank printed circuit board and an etching kit. I realized that this was going to be a one-shot deal. When the kit arrived, I carefully masked off the board with the included black tape, and little black dots. I then carried the board and etching kit into the kitchen, showed my mother what I was doing, and asked her if she had a shallow container that I could put the board in and then pour in the etching solution. She said that she had just the thing, and produced an *aluminum* pie pan that she had saved from a Morton, frozen, cherry pie. Yes, you see where this is going. I put the circuit board in the pie pan, poured in my bottle of etching solution, and was amazed to see the pie pan erupt into a foaming, black mass. I grabbed the edges of the pie pan, and ran for the (stainless) kitchen sink. Just (and I do mean just) as I got to the sink, the bottom came out of the pie pan, and all of my etching solution went quickly down the drain! It's funny now, and it was probably funny at the time, but I don't believe I thought so then! The board sat around the ham shack for years, and I would look at it (with all the acid resist tape still on it) from time to time. It was kind of like hitting yourself over the head, but without the pain. The rest of the story? I etched my *second* printed circuit board just a few years ago, and (believe me) I used a glass container. That worked better! [Elecraft] CW using CAT in MixW
I just finished the KIO2 module. I tried sending CW using the KY command in HyperTerminal and it works fine. In MixW I tried sending CW via CAT command and it doesn't work. PTT, however, does work. I do have the CW via CAT command checkbox selected in options. I'm using the latest MixW program. Anyone know if MixW can key the K2 via CAT command in CW mode? I searched the list archives and didn't really find an answer. I did find a mention of adding this functionality to MixW but the post is from a few years ago. RE: [Elecraft] Horizontal Loop Antenna
Thanks to everyone who responded about my proposed horizontal loop antenna. I was outside today and had an idea for an antenna installation. I primarily want to work (or try to work) some DX. This, of course, requires a low elevation angle. A vertical would probably be a better solution due to my height restrictions. I live on a conservation lot with 6-8 acres of woods behind the house. I own maybe 15 feet into the woods. Being Florida, this is wetlands. There is almost always standing water or VERY moist soil (mud) in the woods. I would think that this would present an excellent ground for a vertical antenna to work against. My idea is to get a vertical antenna, paint it dark brown, and place it in the woods. I'd place it deep in the brush next to a tree. Nobody (except a deer or bobcat, etc...) would be able to touch it. Sometimes the band gets so long at night that it almost sounds dead (when everyone is asleep) except for weak DX signals you might hear. The band starts to get short again as the sun rises over the horizon. [Elecraft] Horizontal Loop Antenna
I've been thinking about what kind of antenna to put up. With my height and deed restrictions, I'm quite limited. I've thought about putting up a horizontal loop antenna. Basically I was planning to run some enameled magnet wire around the perimeter of the roof (I have no plans on running more than 10 watts). The wire would lay under the shingles so it can't be seen. The antenna will be 1 WL long on 80 meters. I'll run coax down to the K2 + ATU. This is similar to The Loop Skywire described in the November 1985 issue of QST. RE: [Elecraft] Attaching sides to K2 RF board
Hi Jeff, I'm about 10 pages ahead of you in building my K2. Sounds like you have the 2-D fasteners in the wrong spot(s). If you have the side (left or right) laying on the table with the inside surface facing up and the two bare areas toward you, the 2-D fasteners attach to the holes at the top left (or right) corner and the right (or left) side. I hope this makes sense. If not, let me know and I'll send you a picture. Attached two 2-D fasteners to one bare area and one unbare area as per locations pictured on page 38. Yet when I went to attach the sides to the RF board, the only holes that fit are the bare ones, one of which I've attached a 2-D fastener to. Have I confused left with right sides and attached the fasteners to one of the bare areas in error? i.e. do the formerly masked areas go on the bottom, not the top? Sorry to be so dense, but the manual is really unclear here, unless the stippled areas in the figures are the bare areas. [Elecraft] Kent Straight Key and Paddle
I'm in the process of building my K2 and I started looking for a paddle/key to use for CW when I'm finished. I haven't used CW in over 20 years and I never was very proficient with a keyer. I saw a paddle and key combination in a ham dealer catalog but it was quite pricey. I liked the combo unit since I could practice my iambic paddle technique while actually being able to make QSO's with the key. During my search on the internet I found that Kent (which makes excellent paddles I'm told) makes a combo unit exclusively for a dealer in the UK called Waters Stanton. Both the paddle and the key mounted on a black base costs $98USD. I didn't think you could even get just a Kent paddle for that amount of money. Both the paddle and the key have ball bearing movements. Quantities are limited so I went ahead and ordered one. I'll post a quick note when I receive it. If anyone is interested, go to the Waters Stanton website (www.wsplc.com) and search for kent-two. 73s, Kevin N8IQ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] I'll be joining you soon!
Craig, What prompted you to get back into the fray? Well, a few months ago I received a QSL card from Canada in the mail by mistake. Looking at the card, I started thinking about the old days. I haven't been on the air since around 1981 or so. Then, a week or so ago, the subject of Heathkit (of all things) came up in a discussion with my wife. I can't remember what we were talking about. Anyway, I was curious to see if Heathkit was still in business (in some form) so I got on the internet and started searching. Heathkit is no more -- but I did find the Elecraft website during my search. I did some research and I was impressed with the reviews on the K2. QRP CW sounded interesting to me so I checked to make sure my license was still valid (yes!). Then I went online to join the ARRL again and to order the Operating Manual and The ARRL Handbook to bone up on what has changed in all these years. This afternoon I ordered the K2 with the auto tuner and RS232 interface. It should be here on Thursday. I still need to get some QSL cards made up and find a suitable power supply. Then I need to tackle the issue of an antenna. It needs to be something I can attach to the solar panels on the roof. I thought about attaching a dipole of some form to the pipes with cable ties. It should be almost invisible to the eye (deed restrictions :( ). Plus the fact that we have all woods out back makes it very unlikely anyone will see it. I just hope it works decently :) Kevin -Original Message- From: Craig D. Glad to know that I'm not alone with this reentry into ham radio. The K2 looks like a great rig and I think we will both enjoy building and using them. I installed a stealth random wire antenna up on the ridgeline of my roof as others in the neighborhood were installing Xmas lights (think I got away with it). Seems to work OK on receive, and hopefully will be able to make some contacts with it. I used to be a CW contester at heart, so may get frustrated with the antenna situation here, but should be fun anyhow. They have QRP divisions, now they just need to have an indoor antenna division too ;) Also plan to install radials in the back yard (definitely invisible!) and make a tripod mounted vertical that I can put out on special occasions and/or after dark. The new automatic tuners should make this type of thing easier than it used to be. Plan to order my K2 with the auto tuner, noise blanker and 160 meter option and then get the DSP filter and perhaps SSB later in 2006. Look for me in Sweepstakes next November for sure! We have solar panels on the roof for the swimming pool. I was thinking about attaching a dipole to the pipes that run along the roof. The pipes are long enough for a DX-CC dipole and should be almost invisible. It's less than optimal, but it's better than nothing. 73s Kevin Shaw N8IQ/4 Trinity, Florida -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Craig D. I believe they still have a special 20% off sale on the major Weller stuff. The K-2 goes on order right after Xmas. I'm looking forward to a fun construction project, the challenge of working QRP CW with extreme antenna restrictions from my HOA, and eventually a KX-1 for those hiking trips next summer.
