[Elecraft] KPA100 Power Surge Advice

2023-08-07 Thread Larry Dodson via Elecraft
Advice would be much appreciated. I would start by saying that I am not
very electronically skilled. The power suppy goes from the power supply to
a KPA100 in a separate enclosure which I built from a kit, then to the K2
Radio. The KPA100 does not light up, no power.

[Elecraft] K2/100

2021-05-10 Thread Larry Dodson via Elecraft
I built my KPA100 14 years ago in a separate enclosure and it still works
fine. I wonder if the upgrade kit would provide improved performance. Any
feed back will be appreciated.

[Elecraft] K2 Low Power on 12 and 10 Meters

2013-11-17 Thread Larry Dodson
In the past I have looked up various problem fixes in the Old Elecraft
Digests, but can no longer find them?

I would appreciate suggestion as to how I fix my K2 low power problem on 12
and 10 Meters. I think that there is a pot to adjust?

Running the K2 without PA (ATU and Power Meter shows 1:1.1) into a dummy
load. I find that all HF bands get a full 10-12 watts output, except 12 and
10 Meters, where I get 7 watts on 12M and less on 10M. This reduced output
is reflected on the watt meter when I hook up my external KPA100/KAT100 and
use more power.

Help will be appreciated in solving the output problem and also where to
find the Old Elecraft Digests.

[Elecraft] KX3 and KPA100/KAT100

2013-09-03 Thread Larry Dodson
I have built the KPA100/KAT100 in a separate enclosure for my K2 and would
like to know if anyone has experience of using these two kits with a KX3?

[Elecraft] K2 external auto ATU

2011-02-01 Thread Larry Dodson
Advice/experience will be appreciated.

I have an upstairs shack (ugh) with much RF. Tried to earth without much
luck. Should use a balanced antenna, but.

I have a windom antenna cut to 20%x80%, overall length 136 feet; used for
80-thru-10 meters. It is fed with vertical twin lead for approximately 20
feet to a 4:1 balum and from there with coaxial to my rig. Whole antenna is
30 feet above the ground.

Now my question. I am using a K2, and have built a KPA100 and KAT100 in
separate enclosure. I would like to move the KPA100 and KAT100 in separate
enclosure to the twin lead from antenna and use as an external auto ATU,
then coaxial to shack, the distance being approximately 30 feet from the
twin lead. I can locate external auto ATU inside of garage.

What would be the problems? RF connection from K2 for 30 feet; control cable
from K2 for 30 feet (maximum distance ?); 12v power?

Thanks in advance -

[Elecraft] K2/KPA100

2010-05-11 Thread Larry Dodson
I have started to experience low power on 12 and 10 meters with my KPA100. I
get 65 watts on 12 meters with a good SWR (1:1) and 35 on 10 meters with a
good SWR (1:1). I initially thought of the low pass filters in the KPA100
but the schematic shows that this would affect 15 meters as well, and 15
meters give out a good 100 watts. The K2 alone into a dummy load is good:
12-14 watts on all bands, except with 10 watts on 12 meters and 8 watts on
10 meters; which if I remember right is correct. Any advice will be
appreciated.

[Elecraft] K2 KPA Low Power on 12 10 Meters

2008-02-23 Thread Larry Dodson
Naked K2 gives me good output on all bands. Problem bands with KPA100
(12 Meters = 13.5 watts and 10 Meters = 10.8 watts).

Through the KPA100 into a dummy load gives 100 plus on all bands
except; 12 meters = 76 watts and 10 meters 47 watts. This is a new
problem and have looked at manual and cannot see a common link? Help
would be appreciated before I open up my KPA.

[Elecraft] Re: Best way to secure RF ground from 2nd floor

2008-02-20 Thread Larry Dodson
I recently tried this on my multi band offset center dipole and would
be interested in any comments.

300 ohm twin feed from antenna to near ground level; box there
containing 4:1 balun which connects via RG8 to rig in second floor
room. In the box ( one foot above ground) I connected outer shield of
coaxial to horizontal copper earth pipes below ground.

I was getting RF in shack and poor SWR on 80M band. The result now is
that I get good SWR across 80M band and no RF in shack. I am getting
good signal reports, but have not had the opportunity to check on the
amount of power that is actually getting out of the antenna.

[Elecraft] Noise Generator

2006-03-14 Thread Larry Dodson
No electronic background, but have successfully followed excellent instructions
and completed KAT100 and KPA100 and have these working in an EC2 enclosure. Not
bad for a guy who cannot tell the difference between a resistor and a
capacitor!

Now for dumb question. I would like a noise generator, mainly for setting up
CW filters, but also for SSB. Does the 2 T-Gen 2-Tone Test Oscillator work for
both, and how do I connect to PC to run with Spectrogram. Thanks in advance -

[Elecraft] KPA100 Alignment

2005-04-29 Thread Larry Dodson
I am having a problem getting 100 watts on all bands and would appreciate
advice. On low power I get over 10 watts on all bands, except 8.5 on 10M,
which I think is OK. On high power I get 100 watts on most bands, but 75
watts on 30M, 90 on 20M and 95 on 10M. I have followed procedures in manual
and all adjustment have been made for high power. I have a good external watt
meter and a good dummy load, so have ruled these out as to the problem. To set
the bias I tried the procedure to put a DMM across R7 and adjust, which seemed
OK. Bust as I was getting low watts on some band I tried the method spelled
out in the manual, i.e.- put a DMM in line with the positive power supply and
found that the adjustment on R6 was somewhat different than the fist method.
But, in either case the power on the bands are the same. I looked on
Elecraft's web site and see that I am not the first to have this problem. The
advice seems to be check transformers and especially T4. I have checked all
Toridals and cannot see anything wrong with spacing or number of turns. Any
advice? - please. Larry (G0IKE)

[Elecraft] KPA100 Problem?

2005-04-21 Thread Larry Dodson
I am not an experienced builder, but having purchased a ready built K2, I
decided that the experience of building a KPA100 would be good for me. And
everything has gone pretty well until I got to page 41 of the manual and
conducted the tests. Most (J3 lead, Q1 and Q2, and J2) are fine and the
readings are as expected. However, Q9 and D13 readings should be over 10K and
I am getting 15Megs on my DMM, which is an older digital type. Granted, 15M is
greater than 10K. Q9 (MOSFET) and D13 (Diode) appear OK and I have worked
through the schematic, taking resistance checks along the way, and everything
appears OK. I am thinking that it could be my DMM and any thoughts from the
group would be appreciated. Larry (G0IKE)

[Elecraft] Low Power ?

2004-09-19 Thread Larry Dodson
I wonder if my K2 (Serial # 2424 with latest mods and software) is set up
correctly and would appreciate comments. Output power with CAL CURR set at 3.0
amps is as below. Increasing CAL CURR to 5 amps makes little difference. I
know that the K2 is basically a 10 watt rig and I get more on some bands, but
the upper bands do not achieve this. When using the K2 with my KW1000 Linear
Amplifier a watt or two makes a difference.
80 Meters = 13.0 watts out
40 Meters = 10.0 watts out
30 Meters = 12.0 watts out
20 Meters = 11.0 watts out
15 Meters = 8.0 watts out
12 Meters = 9.5 watts out
10 Meters =7.0 watts out

Thanks in advance for your advice - Larry (G0IKE)
