Agreed. From the point of view of the manufacturer, there is the big
headache of having to provide drivers for the various operating systems --
and versions of operating systems. Do we want Elecraft to spend valuable
staff time making sure that working drivers are available for Windows 95
through Vista, the various Mac OS versions, Linux, and who knows what?

Ok, I finally got pulled into this debate; in the case of Linux and most
likely MacOS X, if the USB Chip is supported by the OS Kernel, there won't
be a problem. I know the FTDI chips are supported natively in Linux (not
sure what kernel version offhand) from reading it on several Yahoo Groups
that I'm in that are part of projects that use that chipset.

Re: [Elecraft] My K2/100 is up and running, first go :)

2007-07-26 Thread Matthew D. Pitts

James,

My feeling is that since they were using that for the base K2, they felt
that it would be good enough for the KPA100; and it seems to have been true,
since I don't know of any failures that can be attributed to the thermal
pads. Just my two cents(US)

Just a quick note to say that I have built the KPA100 and installed and
aligned it, and it is working fine on all bands. When I built my K2 at the
beginning of the year, it also worked fine, and still is. I have to say
that over all, I am happy with the radio, and it's performance.

I have one query though, I am wondering why Elecraft have opted to use
thermal pads on the PA transistors in the KPA100 as opposed to heat paste?
(A lot of linear amplifiers that I have seen over the years use thermal
paste on the PA transistors without apparent problems.) I just suspect
that the thermal resistance of a thermal transfer pad may be higher than
that of thermal paste..please advise me if I am way off on this point.

Cheers and 73 to all..

Given a choice, I'd leave it in C#, since with the existence of .NET

Don,

It's possible that we'll rewrite the K3 Downloader software application in
VB6, etc., so that .NET won't be needed. The only reason we use .NET now
is that I'm a C programmer, and the quickest way for me to get the
downloader working was to use Microsoft's C# programming environment.

In fact I hope to turn the downloader project in its entirety over to

Guys,

I'm finally getting around to asking a question about the K3 that will help
a fellow ham decide whether or not he will be buying one; does it currently,
or is it possible for a future firmware revision, for it to support voice
feedback? My friend's reason for wanting to know is because his wife, who is

Greetings. I was just thinking to myself how slow the Elecraft reflector
was yesterday on Friday, 4/27. What a difference a day makes! Wow.
Certainly there is a lot of well-justified excitement (frenzy?) over the
awesome newly announced K3. Congratulations Elecraft and I know it will
continue the tradition of innovation and excellence we have come to know
and appreciate from your company!

On another note . . . . there is now another real "interest" out there
among Elecraft fans, while some are still mainly interested in the K2,
some in the K1, some now in the K3, some in other Elecraft kits and tools,
and some in all of it. Those that are building or enhancing or
troubleshooting a K2 may not be as interested in all of the whirlwind
surrounding the K3 (which, again, is justified). So I was wondering if
you (Eric or Wayne) have ever considered an Eham type bulletin board where
you had sections of interest as a means of communication and information?
This may be especially useful as your product line becomes more diverse,
along with the interests of your customers.

Just a thought. You guys are so innovative an open to customer input and
we appreciate it. Keep up the good work and thanks for giving us a great
new product to learn about and enjoy.

[Elecraft] Stage two testing problem

Gentlemen;

I've reached the second testing stage with K2 #5956 and I've found

Don Wilhelm wrote:

Check the soldering very carefully - especially the pins of the LCD display

If you do find unsoldered or poorly soldered socket pins, you can cut away a
bit of the plastic on the side of the socket and get a soldering iron tip on
the pin to reheat it and feed more solder.
If you suspect the LCD pins, they can be soldered from the top side of the
board which often provides a better connection since it is difficult to
properly heat the pins with no projection from the bottom of the board.

Don,

Thanks for the quick response to my questions. I will be picking up a
power supply after I get paid next week, but I'm hoping to have most of
the work done by Tuesday (I'm almost finished with the control board as
I write this). I'm finding that the kit is simpler to put together than
it appears when you first open the box. :) I would recommend this kit to
anyone that wants a quality radio and has the tools to build it with.

Don Wilhelm wrote:

The short answer is YES to all.

The long answer says that you will have to have a power supply to charge the
battery anyway, and one cannot always expect a battery 'out of the box' to
be fully charged, so it would be wise to just go ahead and make up a power
cable rather than using the battery.

The K2 manual indicates the best time to install the option headers - do it
just as the manual indicates and you will not go wrong, and you will achieve
your goal of getting it on the air at the first possilbe moment.

It is easier to trim P5 before it is installed - just don't mix the trimmed
one with the untrimmed one (there are 2 on the control board).

[Elecraft] #5956 construction questions

2007-02-10 Thread Matthew D. Pitts

Gentlemen (and any ladies, of course),

As you can see, I'm beginning construction on #5956 and was wondering a
few things. First off I will point out that I purchased the KBT2, KSB2,
KIO2 and K160RX options on top of the basic CW K2. My first question
deals with the KBT2; is it safe to use the KBT2 as the power source
during the initial testing by installing the included connector on the
RF Board or should I make up a temporary power cable using the included
plug? Secondly, is it ok to install the connectors for the options I
have so I don't have to take the case apart once I get it together for
the initial alignment tests; it's not that I have an aversion to taking
the radio back apart (wouldn't have bought the kit if I didn't like to
tinker with electronics), it's just that I want to be able to get on the
air with it as soon as I can after it's finished (hopefully that's done
by the 23rd). My final question is related to the trimming of P5 on the
control board for clearance when the KIO2 is installed; can I do that
before I install it?

Luckily I had saved the leftover adhesive neoprene washer material for

By the way, yesterday with an 80m long dipole I made a 100 mW qso on

radio club has a 10 meter SSB net on Sundays), digital modes (probably
PSK31 mostly) and probably some CW. I do intend to go for General and
Extra over the next few months. I'm wanting a QRP radio, with the option
of going QRO if needed.

[Elecraft] Suggestions for newbie HF Operator

2007-01-02 Thread Matthew D. Pitts

Good evening all,

I am currently looking into buying an Elecraft K2 for my first HF Radio.
My question is this; what configuration is the best to start out with
for a Technician Class Ham like myself? Obviously, I feel confident
enough in my ability to build it, or I would be spending the money on a
commercially assembled radio. I also have downloaded all the manuals and
looked through them to get a general idea of what tools are needed to
build the various assemblies.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 Elimination?

2006-12-26 Thread Matthew D. Pitts
I am leaning that way as well, since I will want the option of running
100 watts available. It would be nice if, in a future update to the
firmware, we could leave the cables connected and have the K2 detect the
state of the KPA100/KAT100 combination automatically.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2006-12-24 Thread Matthew D. Pitts
Glad to hear you're going to be back tonight. I'll be listening on 20m,
if I can get my Realistic DX-160 tuned properly. In a few weeks, I'll
be able to try to check in, depending on what part of the band that
frequency is in.

Kevin Rock wrote:

Good Evening,
After a week's hiatus I will be back to start the Elecraft CW Net
and pass it around the continent. We got our power back after a week
without it. My Trojan batteries were down to 12.1 volts after
starting at 12.7 volts. It took two full days of charging for them to
recover. I was impressed with all they did for me. Lighting, two
radios, desktop computer with monitor, laptop computer for many hours
of use, and the insurance adjuster's computer too. The phone service
came back a few days before we got power back. It appears the problem
was totally unrelated to the storm or the power outage. Something had
happened at their switching office which kicked me off line.
Hot running water and telephone service are addictive! Since I
have a dial up Internet connection it takes quite a while for me to
get my mail on a normal day. Since I was not using this computer,
which sits in a back room far from the heat source, I was using
WebMail which added another level of indirection slowing access even
further. I am still wading through the 1500+ emails I received over
the outage period.
Thank you for all the good wishes during the darkness and cold.
Yes, it was frightening but with some help I am starting to cut the
trees and stack the slash for later burning. The wood will not be
used for timber since the price the mills are offering is too low to
make a profit. I've been advised to sell firewood instead to make
money. Too bad, there is some prime timber in those trees.
I have only been on HF for a day since all of my antennas were
turned into their component parts. While brushing out we did find
some wires and insulators so I can salvage that and make another one.
I did get up a spare G5RV but have only used it once for MARS so I
know it works NVIS. Now to see if it will get to the Mississippi or
beyond. One leg is only a short distance above my head. But after
five hours of struggle I decided that was good enough.
I found there is quite a difference between Stren and Berkley
Trilene. I was trying to use Trilene for the first time to get my
antennas up using my normal technique of teardrop sinker zipped
through the trees with a wrist rocket. The Trilene did not feed well
and snagged a lot in all sorts of trees. After using about 400 yards
in 20 yard segments I tossed the roll and went back to the Stren.
First time my sinker hit the roof of the house and I got a line back
from there to a tree. The antenna is nearly level but my property is
at an angle so one leg is about sixty feet in the air while the other
would injure someone over six feet! Luckily I am more compact ;)
Tomorrow evening we get to test both the aether and my new
antenna. Now if I can only remember how to send CW!

Tom,

Thanks for the message from Kevin. I'm glad to hear that he's all right
physically, though I can imagine that he's shaken up by the situation. Pass
along my well wishes the next time you have a chance to talk to him; I'm

Matthew N8OHU

  Date: Sun, 17 Dec 2006 22:13:04 -0800 (GMT-08:00)

Just got phone service an hour ago. I am now running off
battery power through an inverter. I have over a thousand
messages to wade through via webmail. I am running a laptop
which does not pull mail from the server.

I am OK, rattled to the extreme, but OK. It took quite a while
to stop shaking after the tree fell a few feet from where I was
sitting. I was in the strongest part of the house and to
windward. The tree limbs were flying over that part of the
house but not at the windows. None were broken. Drywall and
broken branches exploded through the new room and the rest of
the house. Every few feet there was a hole through the roof. If
I'd have been anywhere but where I was I most likely would have
  holes in me too!

Power may be back on by Thursday. I have not found the other
end of the broken G5RV or the tree which was supporting it. If
the trees were not in straight lines I would say we had been
hit by a tornado. Hundreds of trees are down on my twenty
acres. The four Trojan T-105 (backup batteries) started at 12.7
volts. They are down to 12.2 volts now after booting a desktop
unit to tranfer files to the laptop and running the IC-706 for
comms. I still have a J-pole up so I got my nephew to help me
limb the hemlock and cover the roof with plastic. Luckily the
wind and rain came to an end. It has snowed but that is not as
  bad.

The water I had standing by in five gallon buckets froze but
that simply made it easier to transfer into the bathroom. I
used a pan to transfer the top few inches in the toilet tank
and the poured to the fill line. I've run out of back up water
so am going to a beaver pond tomorrow to steal some of their's.
I don't think they will mind because their pond is spring fed.
I'll get a few more days of flushing water. I have cut my way
down the mountain and have gotten more supplies. I did heat
some water on the wood stove for shaving and washing.

I hope to be back on the air but if priorities push the antenna
launch date off that is the way it goes. If I get power this
week it will ease my burden. Sure is nice to have Internet
contact again! I will stay in touch and keep you apprised of my
  progress.

Any ideas on who to call to lift off the hemlock
  tree?

  Kevin.

Re: [Elecraft] Morse test elimination

2006-12-17 Thread Matthew D. Pitts

Karl,

They want BPL equipment manufacturers to follow the rules just like we have
to. They go to places where BPL Trials are in gross violation of FCC Part
15, like Mannasas VA, Briarcliff Manor, NY, etc. Here is a link to an
article on the ARRL website about the Motorola Powerline LV system being
tested at W1AW, http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2005/08/29/1/ . I know
about the Novice Refarming thing, but it was still the FCC that made the
mistake in allocation, not the ARRL.

Matt read the Report and order and you find it's the old ARRL Re-farm

And the ARRL has been opposed to the total elimination of the code test;
they wanted at least for the code to be required for Extra Class. Don't
give up teaching the code to people just because it's not required; it's
still useful when all else fails.

Guys, the ARRL almost caused a revolt in FCC-Wireless. They were being
visited by ARRL people daily. They are lawyers and they are trying to
kill Internet on power lines, and push band planning and morse code
testing removal.

Then after they GOT the band plan they pushed it was discovered ARRL
goofed. They made too much space near the CW/Digital bands Extra Class.
But then wait. It will be simple to get a Extra Class license. No 20 WPM
send and receive, hard written stuff, it is just some multiple guess
questions now.

The ARRL keeps sending me mail which says they need big bucks to keep
the lawyers in Washington. Will I send a hundred bucks? I throw away to
letter.

All the fun I have had teaching code to people is over. My last
effort was fun because I had a 5 year old girl. She had little trouble

So all this is over. Well I'm almost over too.

Not quite - the ITU does what its members decide.

And the end of Morse as licensing requirement
probably started with the JA no-code license -
the first ITU member that "found" a way to get
around the requirement.

The amateur population in JA is now contracting,
but the effect of their no-code license was quite
positive on amateur radio in Japan when it was
introduced.

The effect that had on equipment suppliers is
still obvious today. I wonder what things would
be like now if there was no Incentive Licensing, or
if international opinion would have allowed dropping
the Morse requirement around that time? ;^)

I think it is a sorry state, where FCC feels Morse
Code isn't needed any longer. Frankly I don't think
the FCC is all that technical an agency any longer.
Many of their frequently-changing commissioners - seem
to be non-technical "kids", or political appointees.
I'm sure the US Government budget treats them poorly,
compared to the "homeland security" and DOD agencies.

I'm sure they have their complement of career staffers
- many of whom may be technical. But the
commissioners
seem to frequently disagree with the ARRL, and they
do things in opposite directions of what common
technical sense would indicate. They don't even
agree with the IEEE - the electrical engineering
society, on some technical issues. Digital over
power lines is one example!

I think the Blackberry digital phone message
contest of a Blackberry handheld vs 2 Morse
operators - sort of told it all. Morse Code
won, handily! Keyboarding cell phones lost.
(Re: Jany Leno Tonight Show - 2006)

Looks like the World Amateur Ham community will
be the ones keeping CW alive - in the near
term. Or spy agencies worldwide.
