FYI, there are a ton of these on eBay and here: http://www.prodctodc.com/

I have no interest, bla, bla.

I have been monkeying around with them and in real life (I have no test
equipment) they work well. I am building a 18650, 5,000 mah 8 cell battery pack
with a monitoring board and a buck converter for my KX3. So far the biggest
issue is the dang battery holders. The wire is way small so I have to come up
with s screw/nut scheme to attach heaver wire to. They cannot be soldered as
they melt.

2013-05-07 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Make sure the HP's output signal level is about right (~12.5 dBm, I think...)
before using it. If it's a square wave output at 5V/0V, you're supposed to add
a series resistor. I think this is all in the K3EXREF manual.

Re: [Elecraft] Power issue

2013-04-29 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Check the terminal voltage when the batteries start charging. If it's below
13.8V when loaded and charging is enabled, you would get the LO SPPLY message.

The KXBC3 charges at a VERY low rate (around 200 mA), so it's not likely that
the charging itself is loading the PS down.

Subject: [Elecraft] Power issue

Hello folks,
Just got my new KX3 and couldn't be more excited but I'm having a problem I
hope the group can help me solve. My KX3 is factory built with the KXBC3. I
installed new Powerex 2700mAh NiMH batteries and went to charge them. I had the
KX3 connected to an Astron SS-30 and got a LO SPPLY message. I thought maybe
due to the set screw type connector the Astron has, it wasn't getting a good
connection. I was wanting a new power supply anyway so I went to Radio Shack
and bought a new 13.8VDC 3amp. I just hooked up the KX3 and still get the same
message. The NiHM batteries are now low enough that the rig won't stay on.
Am I missing something?
I posted this to the Yahoo group as well.
Thank you
Bob

For your #2 work in progress:

I've asked Grace Frisk (The NicdLady) to put together an NiMH 14.4V pack. I
should have it next week. My idea was similar to Wayne's, but I wanted to
operate the external pack at a higher voltage than is typical for standard
cellpacks. Field Day is my target date as well.

Specs -
2700 mAH, 14.4V, 39WH.
Size: 2.5W x 1D x 2 H
Weight: About 450g, including the 18 cable (about 1 lb total weight).

In case there is any interest, I'll plug Grace's business:

Subject: [Elecraft] 4-pound Field Day, anyone?

Hi all,

This year I'm going to break with tradition and *not* drag tons of gear to my
field-day site. I'm going minimal4 pounds max of radio gear. This will
allow me to put more emphasis on food, drink, and enjoying time with my son
(now almost 9). If anyone else is up for FD4#, let me know. I'd like to
compare notes on equipment, especially antennas, battery packs, and logging.

4 pounds (or so) is not an arbitrary number. This allows for:

- a KX3 with internal ATU and attached paddle
- mic and headphones
- external Li battery, plus 8 internal AA batteries in the rig as a backup
- two 50' (roughly) lengths of antenna wire, adapters, and a couple of 1-oz
weights to get one wire into a tree
- paper log and dupe sheets (maybe...more on this below)
- soft carrying case for all of the above (in my case, a Think Tank Strobe
Stuff bag)

I still expect to be reasonably competitive in the 1B-battery category even
with this lightweight station. I hope to operate on 80-6 meters in CW, SSB, and
digital modes (RTTY using the CW paddle and the KX3's text decode function).

There are two items I'm still working on:

1. External battery

I need something that will fit into the bottom of the Strobe Stuff bag. It
should supply at least 11 V, and I'd prefer 4 to 5 AH, though I could get by
with 3 AH and switch to the internal AAs later if necessary. Has any consensus
formed about specific Li battery packs in this class? Ideal max size would be
1x3x2.5 (HWD).

2. Logging

I actually like paper logging in the field. It's kind of a Zen thing, checking
dupe sheets manually (Griffin is old enough to help with this, too). But are
there any good FD apps for the iPhone? I need the iPhone anyway so it doesn't
count towards the station weight total. If there's an app that's easy to use
for this, I'd love to try it. Heck, I'd even pay for it.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 as an antenna analyser

2013-04-16 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Turning the KX3 to the purpose of antenna analyzer can be done easily using a
host program on a PC or MAC. It will only be able to give you SWR, nothing
more than that. See the KX3 Programmer's Manual for details.

If your station is so equipped, the LP-100A can be used as a vector antenna
analyzer and can plot Smith charts, R+jX, etc. This is also run from a PC or
MAC, and the results are logged on the computer. This approach would work with
any transceiver supported by Larry's LP-Plot program. See www.telepostinc.com
for details.

It's possible that there is a host program for the W2 (Elecraft) wattmeter as
well, but I'm not aware of it. I'm pretty certain the W2 isn't a vector
wattmeter like the LP-100 and LP-100A. Please correct me if I'm wrong about
this.

Why switch to fm?

Just hit and hold the tune button for a cw carrier.
Disable the atu for vswr reading.
As we know swr reading requires 1w or more. Out of band transmitting with this
power setting violate you licence.

If my antenna is out of band I use a cheap swr analyser from vk.

For the posibility we have to wait for the answer from elecraft. But I think
this feature wil not be implemented in the future.

Normally (not sure on Elecraft's 'normal') a paper label is placed over silk
assembly rev label to indicate a change in components.

Subject: [Elecraft] DSP Revision Question

Hi All,

I was reading the DSP upgrade docs and am under the impression that all new
Main DSP PCBs being shipped are to be Rev D

I just completed assembly of SN6855 and noticed that my brand new main DSP PCB
reads Revision C on the silk screen.  It appears according to the upgrade link
here   http://www.elecraft.com/K3/mods/dsp_rev_c_information.htm   a sticker
and or some PCB modifications are to be done to older PCBs.   During close
inspection I was unable to find a sticker like the one pictured on the Rev B
PCB in the docs.   I found other square stickers with plenty of numbers and
letters but nothing showing clearly a D on it.

So this leads me to ask, How is a Revision C PCB being modified to be a
Revision D?  I see no cuts and jumps, no small PCBs, no added parts, nothing
out of the ordinary.

So do I have a Revision C or D DSP???

Thanks in advance,

Re: [Elecraft] Watch the ions

2013-02-26 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Interesting aside...

I worked for an In-Flight Entertainment development firm, and our premier
product line was a series of Ku-band sat receivers for EchoStar (Dish). The
EchoStar footprint drops off severely at US borders. Dish had a similar
restriction to the one that Ron found re PBS. In addition to the signal level
problem at the borders, the sats' antennas hotspot metro areas, so that
smaller dishes may be used in population centers. In the middle of flyover
country, a bit more of a ground station antenna is needed to maintain link
margin. Link margin and antenna budget being what they are in that business,
we developed a steerable airborne antenna based on an array of Luneberg Lenses
and it worked well. At least it worked well away from borders and in metro
areas...

Unfortunately, the System Engineer that developed the antenna specs lived in a
city, and far from borders. The EchoStar spec said nothing about the
contour of the signal, and how it varied. Link margin as-designed was 1.5 dB
(a reasonable margin, so I'm told). So far so good.

US air carriers sometimes stray into Canadian airspace, and this depends on the
flight plan. US carriers also fly right over the center of the country. We
designed with an affordable ink margin, but not enough to cover the contour
dips at borders and in flyover country. We got into big trouble with the
airlines because of LOS occurring in these two circumstances. This involved a
lot of penalty money changing hands, and a lot of free flights for our
engineering staff to try to work out the problems (which is when we figured out
the variable link margin problem).

The amount of trouble we got into when Dish found out about airline passengers
viewing US-licensed live content in Canadian airspace cause the earlier problem
to fade to complete obscurity however.

Live and learn.

Aha! I missed the second link. That is not a NASA link. It's a link to a video
produced by the US Public Broadcasting System (that's the pbs in the URL).

So I dug into the PBS web site FAQs and found this for viewers outside of the
USA:

While over-the-air broadcasts can reach beyond U.S. borders into Canada and
Mexico, online video is subject to geo-filtering, which restricts the areas
that can view PBS content. PBS is legally obligated to ensure each program does
not exceed its granted rights, which unfortunately eliminates international
streaming ability for some PBS programs in Canada and elsewhere.

You can find our Internationally Available collection, which is a compilation
of programs that can be viewed outside of the United States, at:

Internationally Available Collection

We regret not being able to offer all our content online to our supporters.

The internationally available collection link goes to www.video.pds.org

I don't know if that will open for you, or if they program is in there. I
suspect that it is not or the other link would have worked.

I have the same problem with BBS broadcasts here. Some of the on line stuff is
blocked in the US, especially the classical music on line. So I make do with
radio Netherlands and practice my Dutch ;-).

Subject: [Elecraft] Kansas Snowstorm

Been a couple years without much winter snow (or summer rain for that matter).
The old adage When it rains, it pours! certainly fit this one. It started
about 8:00 yesterday morning and dumped around 5 inches in the first round,
another inch in the second and then overnight it dumped another 6 inches of
snow. I think there was some rain in the second round as well so not
absolutely sure the total. The rainfall equivalent was just about 1.4 inches.

How does this relate to ham radio? I have a heart pacemaker so not allowed to
shovel all that snow and my wife went out last night to start on it. Our
neighbors came over and shoveled the walk for us. Driveway cleared about 7
p.m. and after a nice bit of thanks and conversation, everyone went in. Still
not related to ham radio? This morning we woke up about 4:30 to the sound of
thunder! Yes, thundersnow! When we finally got up around 7:30, you couldn't
tell the driveway had even been cleared last night.

Now, comes the good part - wifey went out again and started to clear the
driveway again. This time, another set of neighbors, two houses down that had
just moved in a month or so ago were out doing their own driveway. They made a
deal with my wife that if she would watch their two year old daughter for a
while, they'd shovel our drive too. She agreed and I was on 40 CW when they
brought the little girl over. She was fascinated listening to the CW and spent
the whole time here in the shack with me intently listening to the CW activity.
She didn't even want to watch cartoons on TV. Her dad said that was the first
time she ever settled down immediately at someone else's house and wasn't fussy
at all. Especially this early in the morning. Might have started a new ham
career, who knows?

Anyway, this might be the first case of a K3 babysitting a two year old and
coming out unscathed - she never tried to grab the radio knobs, key or
anything, just sat there and smiled the whole time. My only regret is that I
didn't have my wife take pictures of the whole episode. Might have to get the
neighbors to bring her over again and see what happens.

Re: [Elecraft] K3XREF Question

2013-02-13 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Hi Bob,

I use the Trimble Thunderbolt as a 10 MHz reference. This is a GPS disciplined
clock, using GPS as the main time reference and an OCXO. The time and 10 MHz
output are both very precise, in the 30 PPT range (though this precision
varies, but not by even an order of magnitude). You can find the manual at
http://trl.trimble.com/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-10001/ThunderBoltBook2003.pdf.

You will need to mount an outdoor GPS antenna. I use a Thales land surveying
antenna and 40 feet of microwave coax. The receiver generally sees 8 channels
with more than 40 dB C/No (which is a good signal for GPS).

There are two software apps you may want to pick up:
- Trimble's control program. This is used to set up parameters for the
receiver.
- Lady Heather's GPS Disciplined Oscillator program. This can be used to
monitor the status of the receiver and signal levels, time, etc. graphically.

One thing you would want to set up different from the receiver's defaults is
the elevation mask. I believe the default is 5 degrees. I'd recommend 15
degrees. This tells the receiver not to use sats below the 15 deg horizon.
The lower in the sky a sat is, the noisier it is.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] and RMS Express, Winlink.

2013-02-11 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Hey Gil,

For WL2K and all data modes, just use Line In and Out to your sound device.
You can key the KX3 via the serial port, using DTR or RTS via the USB-Serial
adapter. Doing this requires a current-limiting resistor in series on the
control line (DTR in my case). I'm using 3.3K for mine, and it keys PTT just
fine.

RMS Express allows a transceiver choice of Elecraft Radios in the Radio
Setup. I've got that choice selected, running in Digital mode (Digital USB).
There are two serial ports shown, one for control and the other for PTT. I
have two virtual ports (COM19, 20) running through LP Bridge, connected to
COM3. COM20 is used to key the KX3, and COM19 is used to control the radio
(frequency, mainly).

Elecraft sells a cable set specifically for this type of use (KX3-PCKT). The
quality is better than average and the cost is only $20.

Re: [Elecraft] Info on front panel LEDs

2013-02-05 Thread Matthew Zilmer
You might want to try setting the LCD and/or LED levels again, using MENU. If
the panel LEDs and LCD backlight both come on when you power up, there isn't
anything wrong with the hardware.

Subject: [Elecraft] Info on front panel LEDs

Hi - my first message, so please advise if I should address my help request to
someone else. I was moving up the bands to look for sounds of activity, and
when I hit 18 mHz there was a pop from the rear and the panel lights went out.

Receive and transmit functions seem ok for CW. I haven't tried sideband yet.

I have not found anything in the instruction manual concerning turning the
Panel LEDs on or off.

The lights come on when the power first comes on, but when boot-up is complete,
the lamps go out. I suspect I pushed two buttons inadvertently (band and
menu perhaps?

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] KXAT3 Internal Antenna Tuner Question

2013-02-05 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Don, I have a related question.

A lot of my HF operations are Navy-Marine Corps MARS. All of our allocated
frequencies are outside the ham bands, and many are not even close to a band
edge. How does the K3 remember ATU settings outside the bands, or does it even
have logic to support this? I generally run the ATU when tuning to another
MARS frequency far outside the bands.

Yes, I have the KBPF3 gen purpose filter, and everything is working fine
outside the ham bands.

Thanks,

I forgot to add - when initiallly setting up the band segments - continue the
TUNE cycles until you reach the top of the band.
After that, all is automatic when you return to that band segment.

The KXAT3 does remember the setting on each band segment. I cannot

When you go back to that same band segment, the tuning combination
should be recalled automatically with no additional operations on your

If you do a TUNE again (at that point in time) the KXAT3 will initiate
a new tune cycle and throw away the previously remembered values. In
other words, do not do an additional TUNE unless you change antennas.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Smarter Charger

2013-01-30 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Good statement, Chip. Right on the mark.

For quite a while now (since inception?), Elecraft's design philosophy has been
to make their products bulletproof. That's not the same as being perfect,
but there is also heavy emphasis on best value per dollar spent. This is a
close approximation to perfection for value markets. At the same time, even
in higher end markets, Elecraft products are feature-wise highly competitive.

The 200 mA charge rate is a good example of bulletproofness. At this rate,
there is very little that can go wrong, even if one or more cells is defective
or even just beyond its service lifetime, or if the op overcharges the cells.
Since Elecraft can't control the characteristics or histories of the cells an
op puts in his/her KX3, this approach is probably the best compromise in pure
design terms. Sure, there will be some users that see a 12 or 16 hour full
charge cycle as being unacceptable. But at the same time, their charging
solution just works, keeps support and warranty (and customer dissatisfaction)
issues at bay, and meets the requirements (charging the batteries).

As Chip said, the electronics is packed pretty tightly in a KX3. You wouldn't
want an inadvertent defective cell [at $5 to $10] to damage $1500 worth of
radio, especially by heating or fire.

In consumer electronics (where I work), our products have charging requirements
that are remarkably similar to Elecraft's with the KX3. Certainly we have
mishaps, and some of them can be pretty spectacular in fact, but these are all
due to manufacturing defects, not a defective design.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Smart chargers for Nimh rely on the cell to show a certain percentage of
voltage drop when full charge is attained - around 10 mV per cell. This occurs
most reliably at fairly high charge currents. With 8 cells in series, that
voltage drop can easily be masked by what is happening in other cells, such
that while some cells are still charging, others may be getting seriously
overcharged to their detriment.

This type of charging also requires a constant current charge to allow
detection of voltage depression. Constant current supplies use switching
regulators - so more noise in the shack.

Additionally, as Nimh cells age, that voltage depression becomes less
pronounced. I've had even good quality smart chargers miss end of charge even
when only a single cell is involved.

Then you have to keep in mind that these cells are very close to some expensive
high density electronics. I think rupture or outgassing of Nimh cells is rare,
but I wouldn't want to chance it. It seems Elecraft's more conservative
approach is wiser.

lower supply voltages would have required a switching boost regulator
which then gets into problems of space, RFI, and cost. It is possible
to put some charge into a depleted set of batteries from a lower
supply voltage but they just won't be able to get fully charged.

Because the battery holders will hold any kind of AA cell, we opted
  for
safety and charge reliability when it came to selection of how the
charger operates. With 8 NiMH cells in series, the influence of
things like temperature, cell condition, and other factors make
automatic detection of full charge at moderate charging currents
unreliable. A timed charge may not be elegant, but it's the approach
recommended by the major battery manufacturers when not doing a fast,
smart charge. And the latter requires much higher current and was
just not feasible in the KX3 due to safety, power requirements, heat, RFI,
 and a few other things.

Hopefully this helps explain a bit why the charger operates as it does.

[Elecraft] K3 ESSB question - data modes

2013-01-28 Thread Matthew Zilmer
In MARS, we use a mil data mode called M110A which requires 3 KHz of TX and RX
audio bandwidth to achieve a low error rate at the higher bitrates (2400 and
4800). I've been trying it using DATA A, but error rates on the RX side (for
non-K3 RXs) is still higher than acceptable. I'm assuming that the K3's TX and
RX audio characteristics would be the same when using 3.0 KHz in ESSB. Since
we have at least two Navy-Marine Corps MARS members in SCA with K3s, I was
going to test RX error rate with each RX set up on ESSB 3.0, while my K3 was
set up the same way for TX.

Another way to assess usability is to run the N-GEN into the K3 RX while in
ESSB 3.0. The output audio spectrum should show a clean audio band. Has
anyone in this group done this already? If so, could I get a copy of the
results?

I recently downloaded the files N7US made of the K3 Main menu and Config menu.
If you haven't done so, I suggest you download them from the Elecraft files.
They show the Default, and N7US settings, with good explanations of what each
item does.

Also, there has been past questions posted about how to list, and save, your
settings. Of course, the K3 utility will save them to reload if needed which
is valuable.

As was pointed out, K3-EZ will display them, but a screen capture will be
needed to save them.

HRD (Ham Radio Deluxe) will display them nicely, and changes can be made on
screen, and/or saved. To do this, (per my version) you click on 'Tools' at the
top of the screen. In the window that opens, scroll down near the bottom and
select 'Extended menus'. A small window opens and select 'Elecraft'. It takes
a few seconds to display as it scans your settings.

When the screen lists all your settings, I call your attention to the yellow
info icon at the bottom with the note that says Changes are applied
immediately. I have not tried making changes this way, yet.

Click on 'Text' at the top. A window opens and you will have four choices. I
prefer 'Text, no border' but YMMV. Also put a check mark in the 'View File'
box. From there, it will display all in Notepad where you will have options to
Save, Print, etc.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 or KX3 on my sailing yacht?

2013-01-21 Thread Matthew Zilmer
This is true. There is a smallish guard band around the US CB 27 MHz frequency
range; no TX inside of that range. It's something like 26.8 MHz to 27.5 where
no TX is ever permitted.

Elecraft's standard unlock utility program unlocks TX outside the Amateur bands
from 2 to 25 MHz. The region from 7.5 to 9.0 is always protected, being too
near the 8.215 MHz IF to be usable.

There is a utility that may be provided separately that unlocks the range below
10m that is not included in the lockout for CB. So MARS and CAP frequencies
between 25 and the lower end of the CB guard band, plus frequencies from the
top of the guard band up may be used for TX.

There are a number of MARS frequencies at or around 27 MHz, mostly allocated
for phone patch and relay activities.

Re: [Elecraft] Wall wart for KX3

2012-12-19 Thread Matthew Zilmer
George has an excellent point (killing good radios), but be advised that the
KX3 is designed to work from pure DC power (batteries) and doesn't tolerate
power supply ripple and transients well. So filtering of the DC is necessary
as well as good regulation. Most wall warts out of the box have neither. This
comes true in spades, in a mobile installation (see
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/Rev-B1-1.6-KX3-Mobile-Owners.pdf for more on
mobile installations and ops).

My on the road AC supply is a MeanWell switcher. It's got a few broad HF
spurs. I treated these as conducted emissions and used a Laird LFB174095
ferrite core w/ 5 turns through it to suppress them. There are still a few
spurs being radiated, and even though they're broad they are also below the
atmospheric noise level. KX #6 only hears them with the antenna cable
disconnected.

USB uses differential signaling. Your problem may not be conductive noise, but
instead it could be radiated directly from the adapter, where the ferrite won't

Subject: [Elecraft] KUSB Noise Query - K3

Hi Folks,
I posted a query about K3 Serial ports a few months back - we could not get the
K3 to work properly with the RS232 connection. It turned out to be a fault with
the sound card, which took out the serial connections.
When I first built the K3, I bought a cheap Prolific USB converter, which
radiates awful noise over the spectrum. I decided to bite the bullet and buy
the proper lead, which arrived today.

Using my Toshiba laptop, on battery power, I get a couple of s points of noise
on 10M with the KUSB connected and HRD fired up. This is using my
2 element DJ4VM quad, which is fed with 300 ohm twin into the shack, i.e. near
the laptop.

On LF, I can hear the pulsing information, in sympathy with the flashing LEDs
on the KUSB on 160M at quite a high level. I can even detect this when fed into
a Marconi dummy load. The K3 and the tuning units are bonder to an RF earth - a
copper stake about 8 feet away from the K3.

I have tried choking the USB lead at the laptop end, which does reduce the
noise to a degree.

The question I have is - am I being unrealistic in expecting zero noise to be
radiated from these adaptors?
Does anyone else have this problem - or has anyone looked for it?

It is not very noticeable on CW or SSB. To hear it best, listen in the AM mode
with the AGC off. On SSB it sounds like band noise.

Is this a problem JUST with USB adaptors or can I expect silence when
connecting a computer via RS232 to RS232.

If not we are sacrificing a low noise floor for the convenience of computer
control.

Any views appreciated,

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 key clicks

I am currently operating barefoot at my new-ish (moved here one year ago) QTH
in Glade Park CO with a K3 and a Cushcraft vertical antenna. (Much nicer
antennas going up in the next few weeks and more power once I get 220V to the
shack).

I have a neighbor, Jerry K0DU, who lives about 4 miles away and is an active
contester. We can see each other's QTHs from our respective shacks across a
high elevation Colorado plateau. Needless to say we have no trouble hearing
each other.

I have noticed that I can get within 2-kHz of Jerry when he's operating CW with
at full 1.5-kW output with no clicks or elevated tx noise. I can see a giant
signal on the P3 but can't hear a thing once I'm 2-kHz either side. This
underscores how nice the K3 rx is. I have a full set of accessory CW roofing
filters.

After the 10m test recently Jerry emailed me ...(Jerry's guest op) came
across you several times on CW... heard buckshot or key clicks out of the pass
band of our receiver up down the band This suprised since I had noted
during the contest how close I could operate to Jerry. And he was running his
linear and I was operating barefoot. Jerry has a FTdx5000 so I don't think
poor selectivity or bad rx design is the issue. I confirmed that Jerry's 5000
did not have the NB engaged during the 10m test.

What can I do to check my K3 for transmitted key clicks and other unwanted
emissions? How to do to eliminate same once I confirm the problem? Frankly, I
Jerry's transmissions don't bother me reciprocity didcates than my
transmissions shouldn't bother him especially with an order-of-magnitude
different to transmitted power.

The Cushcraft vertical (an R8) sometimes has high SWR spikes. Since its being
decommissioned soon and I've been running low power I haven't bothered to
trouble shoot it. Could this be contributing to the clicks/buckshot?

I'll run some tests with Jerry after I have a plan of attack.

I've been running my KX1 from home with the nomal 13.8 v and get right at 3
watts out. When I put 14.9 v (max output from the pwr supply), I'll get 4.1
watts out of the KX1.

A 1 watt increase, not a lot of difference I know, but every little bit helps.
Here's the question, does it, or will it hurt the KX1 in the long run, running
14.9 volts into the radio, I know the manual says 14 v. Does that .9 v make any
difference to the PA, or should I just stick to my 13.8 v and 3 watts ??

I love the little radio, even thou I have the KX3,  and don't want to hurt it !
It's just so simple and easy to operate, and FUN !! (I'll never get rid of it

Re: [Elecraft] Big weakness in Macro's

2012-12-07 Thread Matthew Zilmer
A while back, I wrote a CW functional test for the K3. In doing this, I ran
straight into the programming problems cited earlier by Ed. My solution wasn't
very innovative or elegant (not being involved in the firmware development at
all), but it was adequate and met the requirements.

After establishing comm and getting control of the K3, the I would poll the
toggle and multi-value states parameters that could be set by the program.
There was a list of 25 or so controls of this type, and I would just add new
ones as needed. The really fun part was reading back the values. I had to
dump the VFO A or VFO B displays to do it. I took my cue from Dick Dievendorf,
assuming he'd done something like this to read back the RTC time in the Set
Date and Time tab on the K3 Utility.

Having the MN and MP commands saved a lot of effort as above, but the
implementation is partial. That is not all MN parameters can be polled or set.
So displaying parameters' toggle or multi-value state is about the only way,
in the general case.

For a multi-value parameter (TEXT DEC is one I had to use a lot!), dialing
through all the values is a little cumbersome and requires as many functions
to get/set as the number of parameters that are used. OTOH, there are probably
many MN parameters that would never be used by a hosted program and I believe
that's why Wayne decided to implement the ones that were obviously needed or
perhaps only those that were requested by software developers.

At the start of the program, I'd store all the toggles and multi-value
parameters that the program could touch. When exiting back to Windows, the app
would restore these, including the initial baud rate. The idea was to leave
the K3 in the same exact state before and after.

I would guess the best argument for having a known default state is from Ed.
But executing such a command would introduce a bit of entropy, meaning the K3
would end up in a different state from what it was when the hosted program was
started. This might be ... disturbing ... to users, and disruptive to using
the K3 without having to manually restore a bunch of parameters' states.

IMHO there is a big need for a command that can be use to define things back to
the same state. One big rule in programming is you always set the state of
things so you are always dealing with a known starting point. The command
structure in the K3 does not permit this.

A number of things in the K3 are toggle, for example in MIC SEL 1 toggles the
mic back and forth from high to low and 2 toggles for bias on or no bias.
There are a number of other instances of this in the K3.

Not having a command to define things back to the same state, lets call it a
default or reset state makes the programming commands in the K3 pretty weak
IMHO.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3} AGM Battery recommendation for K3

2012-11-29 Thread Matthew Zilmer
The power arrangement in my shack is similar to Jim's, with slightly different
bits and pieces.

Battery: Optima 75AH AGM, model D31M;
Siemens SR50 x 2 - 100W of PV solar panels on roof;
Micro-M Plus charge controller, modified for 8A output;
Transfer switch, homebrew. Selects Samlex 1235 PSU input or PV input as the
charge source;
TGE battery booster set to 14.5VDC, to keep the K3's DC input in a good range.

I have the Optima battery in a plastic container, although spills with AGM are
almost unhead-of.

Jim,

I can tell you what I'm very successfully using.

I have a Deka 95AH AGM battery that is on continuous charge via a homebrew 25A
smart charger.  I also have a boost regulator to keep the supply voltage up
to minimize TX IMD, even when the battery voltage is dropping during a power
outage.

The charger uses a modified Astron 35A supply to provide the raw DC and pass
transistors.  A slightly modified AA Engineering card delivers the smarts.
Contrary to what some in this forum will tell you, this combination will not
overcharge the battery, but will keep it fully charged even while transmitting
at 100W, even during an RTTY contest.

My battery sits on the floor under the operating desk.

I've decided I might get a battery for my K3 for occasional operation to chase
QRM issues. As long as I'm getting it for reception I thought I might consider
one which would prove useful for transmitting as well.

My shack is in the living area of our house with hardwood floors. I wouldn't
be happy with an acid spill there. So I'm looking for battery size and type
information and what sort of operating time I might expect with QRP and 100W
levels (and anything in between...).

Also would like some recommendations for practical handling and charging to
avoid issues. Charging would be from the AC line. No solar planned.

I'm pretty sure an AGM deep cycle battery is what I've seen recommended. What
else should I look for?

All recommendations welcome.

I completed the assembly of my new KX3 yesterday. When turning on the
KX3 I get an immediate ERR IOA d=001. If I tap the Disp/Menu button it changes
to ERR IOB d=001. I have checked the cable between the Control Panel board and
the RF Board several times. A third tap of the Disp/menu button takes me to the
configuration menu.

I had initially installed the ATU, the filter board and the battery charger and
as soon as I turned on the power I saw the error messages. I had done the
configuration to turn on these three accessories. After removing the three
accessories I removed the configuration for them by changing them to not inst.

I next updated the microcode for the MCU from 1.26 to 1.27. Errors remained.
Then I did the EEINIT procedure but the errors remained.

The troubleshooting section of the manual shows the ERR IOA and ERR IOB entries
but does not speak to d=001.

I installed the NiMH batteries after I had completed assembly. I attempted to
charge them but the charge voltage went from 10.2 V to 11.4 V over a 16-hour
charge cycle. The batteries were obtained from Radio Shack and were the
Enercell 2500 mAh AA cells.

During the assembly I was VERY careful about ESD. I did the assembly on an
anti-static mat and always wore the wrist-strap.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] Any K1 Mobileer's Out There?

2012-10-11 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Hi Chris,

I've done a lot of mobile ops with my KX3 (almost every workday). I got the
basic mobile installation completed in March, and finished up more recently
(last weekend). Mobile with Elecraft is *a lot* of fun, and I've just gotten
back into mobile CW using mobile QRP. The antenna system is Hustler, so have
to move resonators from time to time - but it does work and I found that while
mobile there are fewer compromises than I expected. When I'm stationary, I lay
out a couple of radials clipped to a shipping hook.

At Elecraft's request, I documented the mobile installation plus safety, legal,
power, and cabling considerations in a KX3 Mobile User Guide. It's posted at
http://www.elecraft.com/K2_Manual_Download_Page.htm#KX3. It's the 7th line
item from the top of that tagged page.

I know this isn't directly relevant to your request for K1 info, but at least
it's an Elecraft rig, operated mobile...

Subject: [Elecraft] Any K1 Mobileer's Out There?

Chris, AJ1G from Stonington, CT here. Just subscribed to the list today. I
have been running my K1 mobile for over a year now, mostly on 40 CW, less so on
20. Originally in our 1998 Volvo V70XC, recently relocated to our new Tacoma
4X4, along with an old RT-77 AN/GRC-9 Army field/vehicular radio. I use
Hamstick clones, mostly the OPEKs,and have had some amazing QSOs with the K1,
most notably a 40 M QSO to ZL early one morning from down at my favorite local
mobile operating spot, Stonington Point, CT, about 5 miles from here.

Interested in hearing about other people's experiences doing mobile ops with
the K1 or other Elecraft rigs.

Only issue I currently have with my K1 is a flaky headphone jack connection,
seems like the problem is in the jack contacts and the jack will need to be
replaced. I assume that I should be able to get one from Elecraft and that I
can find info on how to go about that here on the forum.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Filter Blow-By

2012-10-08 Thread Matthew Zilmer
At 10% of all CW on 10m, it's probably a combination of splatter and frequency
proximity. The roofing filter will only help with the latter problem

Subject: [Elecraft] KX3 Filter Blow-By

A recent KX3 owner (# 1677), I've noticed hearing out of passband signals from
loud CW stations. I can hear such stations up to several KHz away. I suspect
the range is limited by the audio response of the system, including my ears.
Both sides of zero beat, though less so on the opposite side of the zero beat.

In the CA QSO Party this weekend, maybe the loudest 10% of the stations on
10 CW Saturday afternoon were leaking through. (I've heard the leakage on other
 bands as well.)

I don't have any roofing filters. (I figured any stations weak enough for me
to need the filter to hear, would never be able to hear me anyway).

Is this normal, or is there some shielding or other issue affecting my unit?
(It is a kit version).

Re: [Elecraft] Data A default frequency center

2012-09-25 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Well, technically, DATA A doesn't need a way to change Fc. Since the K3
doesn't actually process anything in DATA A, it's all up to whatever external
sound you're using.

There was some yammering about allowing a shift of Fc for DATA A, for example
to 1.28 KHz, a while ago. This was for JT65A which has an offset center from
the nominal 1.5 KHz used in DATA A. I don't recall the results of that email
thread, because it was several years ago.

No - whatever issues you find, you're not alone on this reflector.

After doing downloads with no problems for four years I'm now running into a
problem. Using K3 utility v 1.12.3.28 the utility won't hold a connection to
the K3. No matter what the connection speed, the connection is interrupted.
Sometimes it gets as far as showing which version of the MCU is installed.
Sometimes it reaches the FPF version. Sometimes it even gets to DSP1 and 2.
But, when I click Send all new firmware to K3 I get a no connection error.
At the bottom of the utility box it continues to say Attempting to connect to
K3 on port Com8 at x speed.

I'm using Elecraft's USB/RS232 cable and that cable works fine with my logging
programs, (none of which are open and they don't seem to be conflicting). My
OS is Windows XP.

Any thoughts?

on a moral plane than an operating advantage. Tactically, having
clicks and wideband noise could be put to advantage against other FD
 groups.

Regarding your last sentence, to my knowledge, Elecraft is the ONLY
manufacturer who does not allow adjustment of CW Rise/Fall time (Ten-Tec, Yaesu
and possibly others do). Adjusting this time to less than ~5ms can cause
clicks which, as you said above, can be useful in contests to keep others away
from your run frequency.

Kudos to Wayne for not allowing the user to adjust this parameter and therefore
keeping our K3s cleaner than other rigs.

I think you'll appreciate the internal tuner for portable operation. For me,
having an internal tuner is a big incentive. Being in the rig's package, it
takes up less packing space and has no extra cables to hook up. Connect the KX3
to an antenna and paddle or microphone, and it's on the air.

Speaking of internal accessories, I hope the internal NiMH battery charger
board will come out soon. When that's available, I can recharge through the
truck's cigarette lighter socket instead of bringing along external chargers
(two of them, since each will charge only four cells at a time).

Enjoy your KX3!

Hello,

I am attempting to get JT-65HF setup with my K3. I have the software V
1.0.9.3 and microHam MK II. I have followed the setup guide from mH and JT65.
The microHam has both SC and Line LEDs lite. The software is decoding signals
properly. When I try to xmit, the rig keys but no output. I have tried Data A
with and without VOX...still keys, but no output. Is Data A the correct mode
or should it be in USB with Vox 'on'?

Tnx for any help rendered...

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Plasma Question

2012-09-10 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Plasma TVs should be made explicitly illegal, because of the interference
issues they cause on HF. But the reverse is also often true.

I had a neighbor who bought a plasma TV. The dern thing put out all sorts of
QRM and gudge around 4 MHz (near one of the MARS frequencies). As I operated
more and more often on that MARS freq, I found that the interference decreased
over time (at least when I was on the air and transmitting).

Much later, the neighbor reported that she'd taken the TV back to the retailer
because right around 5 PM every day she couldn't receive anything for a few
seconds at a time. She assumed it was defective (it was) and they gave her
credit for another (LED) TV. We live in an area with large setbacks, so her
plasma set was more than 100 feet from the antenna. She's had no problems with
the LED TV.

Jim,

Plasma TVs are wideband signal generators, and almost certain to cause QRN. Go
for a good LED TV and things will be interference free. Yes, the plasma TVs
are less expensive, but if you value your on-air time while the XYL watches TV,
you will need to use something other than a plasma TV.

We have two plasma TV's in our home. One is a ten year old Sony 42 inch unit.
The other one is a two year old Samsung 63 inch TV. They are about 50 feet
from the shack, and only eight feet away from each other - two different
rooms. The Sony has never, ever caused any sort of QRN on any of the ham
bands. Because of that, we purchased the Samsung unit right after moving into
this QTH. I did not have an HF antenna installed for several months after
moving in - when I finally did get one put up, I saw some ugly QRN on most of
the HF bands. However, at the time I was not aware of the plasma effect
that I am now. When I heard the QRN, I assumed it to be from the PGE high
power lines that are pretty close to the house. By the time I put two two
together and figured out that the ugly noise was from this Samsung TV, it was
 already out of warranty. Ughhh

We are now in the market for another TV, and have been looking at a very nice
Panasonic 65 Plasma set, model TC-P65VT50. I've already told the Best Buy
sales manager that IF we do buy it and IF it causes QRN to the HF bands, it
is coming right back. He said that is no problem. But, if I can query this
group to see if anyone else has one of these TV's, I may be able to avert a
lot of work ahead of time. Our second choice would be an LED set, but after
seeing plasma and LED side by side, playing the exact same content, I want to
stay with plasma - BUT ONLY IF IT DOESNT SCREW UP THE K3!!!

Subject: [Elecraft] KX3 Power Sense

It's my understanding that the KX3 will sense the input voltage and adjust
power output correspondingly.
That is, if I'm using internal NiMH batteries, power output will be limited to
5 Watts, and if I'm powering the
KX3 from a 13.8 Volt source, power output will be allowed to go all the way to
12 Watts. Right?

Well, here's what I'm experiencing: Let's say I've got my power set to 10 Watts
using a 13.8 Volt source and my KX3 display indicates 10W output. If I turn
off the KX3, unplug the 13.8 Volt source and run off batteries, my power out
(as indicated by the KX3 display) is 5 Watts...fine! Now, if I turn off the
KX3, plug in the 13.8 Volt source back into the KX3, and then power on, output
is still at 5 Watts. I have to readjust PWR to 10 Watts to get
10 Watts out.

Is that the way it's supposed to work, or am I missing a setting somewhere?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and 60 meters

2012-08-17 Thread Matthew Zilmer
60m works fine on the KX3. If you give each 60m memory a name starting with
'*' (asterisk), then adjusting VFO A will allow choosing from the five channels
directly. Be sure to put CW at the channel center frequencies, if you intend
to use CW that is.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 direct conversion system

2012-08-15 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Hi Jun,

If you haven't tried it, set RX ISO to ON. This enables an isolation amplifier
that keeps the LO greatly attenuated outside the KX3. The amp draws something
like 10 mA, so use it only when you need it.

Subject: [Elecraft] KX3 direct conversion system

Hi all,
I built KX3 kit (S/N830) up last week after fixing some errors.
As soon as trying some functions, I found it's really a direct conversion
system. A weak leaked signal was observed with another receiver just on the
watching frequency.
In my boyhood, I built Mizuho DC-701 which was a copy model of Heathkit
HW-7. DC-701 also adopted direct conversion system and my local
station could detect my receiving point. The leaked signal from KX3 is
not so strong as that of DC-701 and almost no problem.
Direct conversion with DSP system will be possibly adopted in higher class
transceiver.
DC on 2m is interesting, however, challenging.
So transverter is reasonable solution and I'm expecting the module again.
Many thanks for proposing the innovated equipment.

The block diagram shows the transmission system is also 'direct conversion'.
The local oscillating frequency seems to be basically equal to the transmission
frequency.
Is it correct?

Just one more twitting. The optional microphone looks something a
little cheap, because it's same as that of Chinese kit KN7Qa.

Hi Matt,

I thought that the RX SHFT menu item was what set the IF to 8kHz, not the
dual watch (the dual watch may or may not enable an 8kHz shift as well. In a
simple implementation of dual watch, the first demodulator would sit on centre
frequency, and the second would shift +/- 15kHz from that. In a trickier
implementation, VFO would be shifted up or down 8kHz or even more, and VFOB
would then be able to range a bit further, and give a bit more than the current
+/-15kHz separation).

As for whether the RX SHFT affects the centre frequency of the RX I/Q outputs,
I'm not sure. It would not be hard to verify -- just tune in to WWV with RX
SHFT on, and see where in the waterfall the signal appears (eg. at centre, or
at centre+8kHz)

Hey,

Sort of off topic, but I was wondering if anyone has any positive experience
using boost regulators fed from a lead acid battery to drive their K3?
Specifically I'm wondering which models might be relatively free of emitted
noise, are fairly efficient, and haven't messed up in a typical RF environment.

I use solar panels to keep a flooded lead acid battery array charged, then run
my ham stuff from that - but the battery voltage does sag lower than I'd like
under transmit, dropping down to about 12.0 VDC, so I'd like to get it closer
to 13.8 under load by using a boost regulator.

Appreciate the bandwidth, and thanks in advance.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 - Reliability

Bill and others,
With all the discussion about problems with the KX3 and K3 I feel is is timely
to discuss the problems with my K3 and Elecraft's response.  My K3 arrived as
the usual modular kit and is in the 34xx serial numbers.  I've had it three
years this coming September (9/2012).  Details of failures are as below.
1.  Upon receipt the DSP PCB had 8+ volt buss shorted to ground.  Elecraft
replaced the PCB and it was up and working about two weeks after ordering.
2.  Excessive current indication.  Elecraft sent a replacement HPA that did not
correct the problem.  The replacment HPA had two capacitors hanging off the
side.  Returned the K3 to Elecraft and they found a drive transistor in the LPA
was defective.
3.  Loss of sensitivity at turn on.  Took about twenty minutes to reach full
sensitivity.  After many weeks of back and forth discussions, Elecraft sent a
relay which I installed.  It did not help.  Sent the K3 back to Elecraft.  They
found a defective solder joint on the RF board.  They installed several
updates.  Elecraft extended the warranty to 18 months.
4.  CONFIG menu was scrambled.  The adjustable items did not line up with the
item it was to adjust.  Wayne at Elecraft got involved after several exchanges
with support.  Finally resolved by doing a complete reset and installing all
new software.  Had to recalibrate all functions and reset all adjustables in
the menu as the back up was also corrupted.
5.  Power adjustment was erratic.  Sometimes it took five or more complete
turns to change power from about 30 to 100 watts.  Other adjustments controlled
by that encoder seemed to work okay.  Again, it took weeks back and forth with
support.  They finally shipped a new encoder which I installed and that
corrected the problem.
6.  ATU would not tune.  No relay action at all.  The ATU was not in bypass.
After instruction from support to recalibrate several functions and
perform other tests, it begun to function properly.  I'm wondering if this K3
has had the gold pin modification.  Got near simultaneous responses from three
different individuals in support when I emailed about the problem.  Some
troubleshooting overlapped but the varying directions from three different
technicians was confusing.  Do they have a triage system with one technician
assigned to work a problem?
7.  Concentrite knobs near the microphone connector cracked.  I took the K3 to
Field Day and when I removed it from it's Pelican like case after returning,
the knobs were cracked.  Support sent replacements.  The replacements are a
matt black and the other knobs are glossy black.  The replacements color and
finish look weird compared to the originals that remain on the radio.
I and elecraft have been unable to determine if the frequency response
modification has been done.  The radio was shipped at about the time the
modification was begun.  It appears to have different capacitors from earlier
PCB's but there was no daughter board  installed.  I installed a daughter board
myself.
I also have a K2 and several mini-kits.  The k2 has had no major failures.  But
I've calibrated the dial and set the filters several times. At the Dayton
Hamvention in 2011 I attempted to discuss the radio with Eric.  His response
was to call support and he turned away.  I realize it was at opening time but a
can you get back with me after we get open would have been received much
better.  I

Subject: [Elecraft] Can I split or share my ACC port?

I spend a lot of my time connecting and disconnecting accessories from the back
of my K3 and I find this tedious.

In my shack I have a, Expert 1K linear amp and a Microkeyer II which both like
to use the ACC Port on the K3 I use a Remote-rig unit to control the
K3 when I am away and this too needs the ACC.

Instead of connecting one of these items at a time, is it OK to use a VGA cable
splitter and have both or three connected simultaneously?
Is this port a strictly one-at-a-time guy?

In addition to the issue with the ACC port, the accessories above (+ add to
this a Signalink USB) I find that I am regularly having to change the plugs
into my: Line-in , line-out, Paddle, Key, PTT and Speakers sockets and
RS232 port.

Which of these 'ports' can be shared or split and which will will only safely
take one I/O?

I am tempted to build an external 'Patch Box' to give me handier and easier
access to the K3 back-panel .

Has anyone built one of these or is it even necessary if the ports can be split
and permanently shared?

I believe that Y cables are available for the RS232 on the K3.
Into how many RS232's can these be split?
 2...34?
I have an Expert-1K, a CAT, and a Steppir controller and a Remote-rig - all of
which would like a place on the nipple!

Thanks and GB

Rich,

But, once the macros are assigned from the present 8 K3 memories to
specific keys in the K3, there is not reason why these memories can
not be written over for the next batch of 8 different macros to be
assigned as multiple macros to other 1-8 or PF keys.

There's the rub ... if you load new values to Macro 1 - Macro 8 your
multi-state macro *will no longer work correctly*. The multi-state macros work
by *assigning new values* to the key every time you press it. If you change the
contents of Macro 1 - Macro 8 the new value of Macro 'n' will be assigned to
the key - not what is expected by the multi-state macro.

Given the usability of these multi state macros it would be valuable
if Wayne would extend the number of macro slots that can be assigned
to K3 switches. In effect each of these toggle or tri-state
macros is two or three individual macros that remap the key on each
step - with at least 10 assignable keys (M1-M4 tap, M1-M4 hold, PF1,
PF2) if each key were used for a multi-state application the number of
required macro slots could easily exceed 20 if each key were used for a
 toggle function.

If one does not use DVK/CW/FSK memories, the number of available keys
 (10) already exceeds the number of assignable macro slots (8).

I've been doing this with 2 macros to switch the L-MIX-R menu item,
one allocated to M4 TAP and the other to M4 HOLD. After reading the
recent posts on the K3 Triple Macro ('self modifying code') for
cycling power levels I realised I should be able to set up the audio
mixing macro on just one button as a true toggle switch, and the
following 2 macros both allocated to
M4 TAP does just that and now releases the M4 HOLD for another macro.

 MACRO 5  AB AB   MN111;MP003;MN110;SWT29;SWT39;SWT14;
 MACRO 6  A ABMN111;MP001;MN110;SWT27;SWT39;SWT14;

Thanks to whoever thought of all this, it's pretty neat. The first 2
 fields
(MN111;MP003;etc) switch the L-MIX-R and were originally allocated to
tap and hold separately; the other fields reset the macro as in the
 'Triple Macro' examples.

As an aside, it would be great to be able to comment the macros (in
 K3
Utility?) especially when they're a bit involved like this; I've not
found this is possible. Presumably this won't work unless the
'comments' are stored in the K3's EEPROMwith the inevitable space issues?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 interal battery charger

2012-07-05 Thread Matthew Zilmer
There are other ways to achieve charge parity (balance). One of them is the
multi-cell charge controller. An example for LiPo chemistries is the AAT 3663.
Datasheet is available at www.analogictech.com. Doesn't help with AA's, but
there is probably an equivalent out there for lower voltage single cells.

Looks to me like Greg is correct about the difference between balancing and
equalizing. Xantrex / Trace refers only to equalizing with their controlled
overcharge on solar charge controllers. EQ is used with FLAs to stir the pot
and disturb sulfation on the Pb plates, and the process basically allows the
sulfates to debond from the lead. With FLAs, I run an EQ for two hours about
five times a year.

The balance charging operation requires access to each cell and requires a
smart charger that is appropriately programmed for the specific chemistry and
for the balance operation. The idea is to be sure that each cell is properly
and fully charged without overcharging or damaging any of the other cells in
the pack. This is quite common with the all the various lithium chemistries,
and when using NiCd or NiMh smart chargers that charge each cell independently.
Most of the inexpensive consumer NiCd and/or NiMh chargers do not treat each
cell independently. Only the more expensive models include the test/refresh
modes. Although NiCd and NiMh cells are often overcharged by many slow
chargers, apparently that is not the best practice when performed on a regular
basis. Thus, the smart chargers.

If I am understanding correctly, a PbAcid (e.g. SLA) equalize charge operation
does not have access to each cell and instead is an operation that uses a
carefully controlled overcharge function, within the safe operating
envelope of the battery, to bring up the lagging cells without damaging the
stronger cells.

It sounds like equalize and balance are two different operations, intended for
different cell chemistry and charging styles.

Starting with a fresh set of Eneloop (white label 1,900 mAh or black XX label
2,500 mAh) or other brand of pre-charged or low self-discharge
(LSD) NiMh batteries that have had at least one test/refresh cycle performed,
the need for removing the batteries from the KX3 for a test/refresh cycle
should be VERY infrequent as long as they are not abused significantly. As Jim
mentioned, hopefully this won't be too often. Who knows, even with heavy use,
maybe the batteries won't need to be removed for over a year - or two. Yes,
Greg, I plan to do things exactly as you
stated: check after a few months, but then pretty much leave them alone in the
radio for a long while as I see how things work out. I will be interested to
hear from folks here on the reflector as experience is gained.

With the traditional non-LSD high capacity NiMh batteries, the need for
test/refresh may be a bit more frequent. For example, the Energizer 2600 mAh
(?) AA cells are notorious for extremely rapid self-discharge and may need a
bit more care and feeding.

In balance vs equalize, I also hear about equalization charge to
12V SLA batteries without access to individual cells. PbAcid cells
have a higher charge/discharge marginal ratio as they get full, so a
mild overcharge should tend to cause all cells to be fully charged.
NiMH is almost certainly similar, especially during low-rate
overcharge as is typical, so I'd expect that all cells end up full.

To understand the KXBC3 behavior, it seems that one should use a Maha
C9000 or equivalent to measure/record the capacity (refresh/analyze)
of all the cells, and then put then in the KX3 and use them for a
while, and then when the KX3 says they are charged pull them and do a
discharge measurement followed by a refresh/analyze. I'll report back
 later :-)

Re: [Elecraft] 4.48 vs 4.51 CW Decode

2012-06-29 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Contests aren't the best setting for CW decode, imho. However, if you tune the
CW slightly higher than the CWT indicates it seems to improve decoding when
there is band noise present. If you minimize the passband to 50 or 100 Hz,
this also helps reduce noise in the decode channel. With the passband
minimized, the decoder gets good results with the CW and CWT matching.

Re: [Elecraft] Field Day experience with K3

2012-06-28 Thread Matthew Zilmer
You might want to get a battery booster. Here is one
http://stores.tgelectronics.org/Detail.bok?no=10.

I can recommend that one. Had one for a couple years and use it to boost to
14.5VDC from whatever voltage any time of day from a solar-charged battery. I
think my K3 likes that 14.5V!

The problem here isn't the battery AH capacity, but the voltage supply. It
could be dropping below 10 vdc because both radios are on the same supply, or
because the power supply wires are too fine gauge, or because the battery is
defective.

The K3 is less robust to supply voltage than the other Elecraft radios. The K2
is rated for 10-15 volts; the K1, KX1, and KX3 go down a lot lower, I think 8
volts. I looked at the K3 documents to see what minimum voltage it requires,
and I couldn't find it -- I think it's something like 11, but it may be 11.5 or
even 12.

You'd probably do fine just by using a separate battery for each radio, and not
letting it run down too far. A voltage booster isn't needed, as lots of
operators all over the world have demonstrated.

Re: [Elecraft] Fusing the K3 Power Line

2012-06-26 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Hi Lee,

The manual (rev D10) doesn't really say 25A fuses, just that the power supply
should be rated 25A and that two fast-blow fuses should be used in the supply
cabling for protection. I use 30A fast-blow fuses, one in each of the pos and
neg lines. Power comes from a battery, and the battery is solar-charged.

Reading the manualit says that two 25 amp fuses should be in both the
positive and negative leads going to the K3 from the battery. Now, what about
AC supply like and Astron 35M. Should you also have the same thing - two fuses
inline from the PS to the K3. The manual talks about a battery but doesn't
address that specifically (or you could infer) for a AC power supply. Or, am I
just loosing my mind?

Erik, probably the easiest way to get to the nut is through the KPA100
enclosure. Download the 12DC Power Mod instructions
(http://www.elecraft.com/manual/12VDC%20Current%20Modification.pdf ) They show
you how to get into the rear panel, by removing the fan panel and
KPA100 module (ignore the instructions about removing the bottom cover).

I bet you can get in and tighten it up and get out all in less than 30 minutes
even if working very slowly and carefully.

Just pulled my K3 off the operating shelf for travel to Field Day.
Discovered that the AUX RF BNC connector is quite loose. Started to loosen
adjoining case panels to tighten the nut, but didn't find a way to easily get
at the nut. Since I don't need this connection for FD, and I don't have time to
spend, I will just defer fixing the problem until I get home.
However, if there is a best way to do the job, without removing the second RX
etc, I'd like to know. Any advice?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 phantom power

However, there are a number of DC to DC converters on the market. I've
used Artesyn a number of times in solar power installations. Never a
complaint, and the oldest install is just over 7 years in operation
now. Digikey and Mouser both stock Artesyn, and there is room in the
chassis for it. Just a thought.

Pick a DC-DC converter for the 8 to 16 Vin range, to give 48VDC out.

Re: [Elecraft] K rig's longevity?

2007-09-30 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Since I hardly ever post here, I have no guilt over doing so on this
moderately controversial topic.

Many software houses and embedded systems outfits make their software
components available, only in the event of their demise, via escrow.
Typically the escrowed software follows the comapny's assets as it is
bought and sold. But it also may be released into the public domain
or to a specific customer if the company's assets exceed its
liabilities and no entity rescues it. Going out of business is the
term I was looking for

Escrow into the public domain is not typical, because most companies
that fold still have residual assets, and usually someone buys them at
fire sale prices. Many valuable [not market value, but value to
each/any of the users] assets like this are locked up in IP Farms,
where IP = intellectual property. That's usually not good for a large
user base, but it's reality. I believe the escrow writer can specify
that the asset(s) may be disposed of in a certain way, and that this
spec follows the asset(s) forever. But I've also heard of IP houses
getting around this and locking the door forever.

We used escrow and trade secret modes at a very interesting little
crypto house I worked at a few years ago. Some of the agencies we did
work for insisted on certain terms and conditions, and that the design
disclosure include all data/specs on all components needed to
reproduce the design in its entirety. All of the stuff that wasn't
deliverable in the contract was held in escrow.

Escrow may be a possibility for Elecraft, but they'd have to look into
it. I have a feeling they're staying a little too busy to take the
time.

 when

Most of the documentation is closed, as, as you point out yourself, the
radio does a lot in software, and the software source isn't released;
not even the AuxBus protocol is documented. It's also the case that
component substitution, including piggy backed surface mount parts, have
had to be made already.

The impact of the closed software is that, even if you can get the PIC
chips, you won't be able to program them. Also, where the firmware has
restrictions for legal reasons, and these go away (e.g. the Thai
government permits use of additional amateur radio frequencies, or, on
my reading of the UK licence, and assuming the situation has arisen and
Elecraft have actually complied, if a UK Novice gets a Full licence and
is therefore allowed to operate equipment that is not restricted, by
design, to authorised frequencies, the user may have trouble getting an
upgrade).

Incidentally, making the software public domain is not a good idea, as
it will be ineffective in the UK, and most other countries, with the,
probable, exception of the USAb, and doesn't allow one to restrict
implied warranties. It's better to use a liberal and perpetual licence.

The other issue is that Elecraft is a small company and we have
discovered, this week, that one of their founders is turning 50 and
another key technician learned algebra in the late 1950s, it seems to me
that a lot of the key personnel are reaching the point where they think
about retirement. As well as losing the product knowledge, founders of
startup companies in that position often want to turn the value of the
company into cash to fund their pensions. To me, the K3 could well be
there in order to make the company sellable. My experience of
innovative startups, where the founders sell out, is poor. I've had to
leave my old ISP, because of the consequences of that.

From what I know of the hardware, I would be most worried about the K2
headphone jack, as it is not particularly generic and a known weak
point. I'm also somewhat concerned about the relays. They are almost
impossible for an individual to source and they have a limited life, and
the KAT2, in particular, hits them hard.

There are a lot of them out there. Google serial-over-ethernet.

I think Elecraft missed an opportunity in the design of the K3
 regarding networking. (Ian)

I don't know that I would jump to that conclusion. Given that the K3
can be fully controlled via the serial port, it would surprise me if
an ethernet adapter was not a planned future offering - but
better to get the base rig on the market, don't you think?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 microphone options

2007-05-29 Thread Matthew Zilmer
Anyone have a similar recommendation for the desktop 708/709 Ten Tec
mics?

Just a quick followup in case it will be of use to somebody else some
day. I went with the TenTec 701 for my K2 because it was a quick and
easy option, and as Don said (thanks Don!), it works well. Since
finishing K2 #6100 last week, I have made several 5-10w SSB contacts
from my QTH in North Georgia throughout the eastern US and Central
America, and the reports are that my audio is great! A 17m QRP contact
to Pennsylvania last night told me that I was the smallest signal he
had worked that day, but the best sounding one!!

Anyway, I am sure there are lots of great microphone options, but the
affordable little 701 works well. I got the 8-pin connector from my
local RS store, and it was quite easy to wire the microphone and mic
header.

 Greg,

The K2 needs a high output microphone, and that usually means an
electret type element. Most Icom mics (and Heil mics with the 'iC'
suffix) are the high output electret type. If you choose one of these
and wire your K2 configuration header for ICOM (with a 5.6k resistor
between the AF pin and the 5 volt pin), you should be able to just
 plug it in.

The other electret mic that I know works well are those from TenTec -
the 701 is the hand mic. They come with a 4 pin mic connector that
you must change to 8 pins, but you can wire the new mic plug for any
mic configuration that you want - I suggest the Elecraft wiring -
straight across (use computer jumpers) on the mic header.

 Hi all,
I am in the process of building K2 #6100 and need to start thinking
about a microphone. I've looked over the Reflector archives, and it
seems that there are lot of little mods needed for a variety of
microphones. The simplest solution would be a MH2, but I don't know
that I can wait until the June 15 production date. Question is, can
I not just jumper my K2 for Kenwood, buy a Heil HM-10 or Handi_Mic,
and plug-n-play (without any internal K2 mods)? I will get a Pro Set
someday, but I just want a decent little microphone to get me
 started. Any suggestions?
 Thanks and 73,
