Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Filters for mixed JT65 and JT9 HF
Hi Olli Thanks for the reply Well yes the SW tells my radio that it should TX on the B VFO. But then again it is SW. A piece of programming that should work on 10 of combinations of different PC HW and several OS. Nothing that you could test in all combinations. 15 years of working with production and the related automation involving a lot of SW have learned me to be sceptical. IT mostly works yes, but sometime not. Right now i have no indication that it works or not. My K3 do indeed display an arrow pointing toward the A VFO, but it do dot change to B VFO during TX despite the fact that TX are on the B VFO frequency. So the arrow on the K3 seems not to change when a VFO B TX are initiated via CAT. Before we get there, yes i know that there are plenty of SW (Firmware) in the K3 as well. But the number of input possible and the number of configurations are limited and there for possible to test and have been very well tested by Elecraft and the K3 community. I am sure the WSJT-X are a very well designed piece of SW and i am indeed very happy using it. I just like to be sure where i put an signal on the air. 73 de OZ1BZJ Michael . Hi Thanks for the reply Yes I can transmit using the split options. For 2 reasons I would like different approach with a wideband TX. First of all I am interfacing through HRD. That way the split are not implemented to my understanding. Then I really like to know exactly where i transmit. Using the split the only indication I get is that the frequency in the b VFO. But i am not able to see if i am actually doing TX on A or B VFO during a TX cycle. 73 de OZ1BZJ Michael -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Filters-for-mixed-JT65-and-JT9-HF-tp7578942p7579667.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi I am right now using this exact setup with WSJTX. I do get the about 400Hz to 4200 on the waterfall, but TX are an issue. As "i guess" the K3 transmit through the 2,8 Khz. filter when ever i try to work a JT9 QSO above 3,0 Khz on the waterfall i do not see any audio output. Hi Wayne Just one level more of explanation on this. Fully configurable in SW can be two things... End user configurable or factory configurable. to accommodate countries where we have been so fortunate to get access to a large part of 60m and that in VFO mode. Re: [Elecraft] K2 LSB Modulation issue
Don your are the man Once again you have helped a Elecraft product on it´s way 15pF across pin 3 and 6 of U11 pulling the crystals did make the difference. Now the BFO range are within the window given in the manual. Also the reports on my LSB modulation are way better. Not in the prefect level, but way better then it was... I would say with some more filter tuning on the FL1 for TX and the Smaller bandwidth filters for SSB. #5111 are fit for fight for more qso. Looking back in the manual at my own notes it is now clear, that I ignored the warning signs when the limits of the BFO was tested. One end are indeed not within the window. Properly intoxicated from the solder fumes and the eagerness to build you get from a K2 made me never to readdressed that fact. Thanks Don I owe you a beer.. Maybe in Dayton 73 de OZ1BZJ Michael -Oprindelig meddelelse- Fra: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] På vegne af Don Wilhelm Sendt: 12. oktober 2010 01:22 Til: Michael Jensen Cc: 'Elecraft' Emne: Re: [Elecraft] K2 LSB Modulation issue Michael, First a comment - why use SSB FL4 set to 700 Hz width for PSK and have to remember to turn the compression off when using digital modes? It is much easier (IMHO) to go to the secondary menu and turn the RTTY filter set on. That gives you a compression setting independent of that used for SSB - just set it to 1:1 for the RTTY filters and be done with it. I usually set RTTY FL1 the same as SSB FL1 OP1 filter and the BFOs the same. That gives you a full width passband for normal point and click in the waterfall. Then I set FL2 to 1.00, FL3 to 0.70 and FL4 to 0.40 to give narrow RTTY filters when QRM shows up - yes you have to tune to the filter center with the VFO, but at least you can continue operating. Center the narrow RTTY filters at 1000 Hz, and easy number to remember and it works well with MMTTY when the mark frequency is set to 915 Hz. Now on to your question - yes, that is a problem - the low end of your BFO range is too high. You can increase both C173 and 174 keeping the ratio close to 3:1, or you can try an easier fix first, solder a small value capacitor from the juction of the crystals to ground (U11 pins 6 and 3 maje nice anchor points). I would not exceed 27 pF with this added capacitor because it can decrease the BFO RF voltage level. Check both the high and low end of the BFO range after making this change (see manual page 62). The high must be greater than 4916.3 and the low less than 4912.7. If you cannot achieve the correct range with this single capacitor addition, you will have to change both C173 and C174. I would try 100 pF and 330 pF to see if that brings it into range. You may want to write down the frequencies (not the DAC values) of the BFOs that you already have set because all the BFO settings will be shifted and you will have to do the filters over again. 73, Don W3FPR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi Don Thanks for your answer. I have now done a realignment using Spectrogram as I did originally. I believe using the exact same instruction. I might have asked this 4-5 years back but maybe without prober explanation, any way I do not recall the answer. Setting the LSB FL4 for PSK to a bandwidth of 0.7 I struggle to reach a center of 1KHz. I can get to about 800 with a BFO of 4912.99 and a dac of 16 going further then that the signal fade. First check to be certain the SSB FL1 is set to OP1. The BFO frequency for LSB using the OP1 filter will be between 4913.48 and 4913.65 depending on your particular filter center, and the USB BFO will be in the vicinity of 4916.5. You can check with the internal frequency counter probe in TP2, enter CAL FIL and tap the BAND- button. Then go to my website www.w3fpr.com and read part 3 of the article dealing with K2 Dial Calibration - that is the section that explains the filter setting using Spectrogram. If you do not have a copy of Spectrogram and or need information about how to set it up on your computer, download it from Tom Hammond's website www.n0ss.net. If you have not set up your K2 filters before using Spectrogram, you may want to align all your filters. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/10/2010 5:36 PM, Michael Jensen wrote: > Hi all > > > > I have noticed an issue on my trusty K2 #5111. [Elecraft] K2 LSB Modulation issue
Hi all I have noticed an issue on my trusty K2 #5111. Might have been there since I build it several years ago or it might have come during the years The issue are the modulation on LSB. The audio are not very good and do sound "funny" Could maybe be described as nasal or some one knowing my voice call it "like the audio was being frequency modulated". USB are ok or at least so much better that no one notices. There are no difference between running high power or low power and have tested using different power supplies. The reason for going un detected is that I in the past not often was below 20 on SSB. When I used 40 or 80 it was mainly PSK but running USB. So no issue seen. When I was made aware of the issue I first put the blamed on a power supply for my PA as beeing the reason. (the magnetic field issue discussed here several years back). Now having tested for that it do not seem to be the problem. Any of you that would have experience or comments on a TX audio issue that effect only LSB. Hi all I am thinking about adding the last option to my K2, the DSP. Currently I am a SSB guy. Using also Digital modes there. I know the DSP do great stuff on CW, but what about SSB. Do any of you have an opinion you like to share on this. Is the DSP value for money on SSB. Reason for asking are that I have DSP on my IC703, but hardly ever use it, as the voice quality with DSP seems to make it harder to copy. Hiel builds mics with several types of elements, and those that are intended for use with the Icom (iC suffix) usually work well with the K2, but do need a resistor from the +5 volt line to another pin on the mic jack (usually the AF pin). The adapter type you purchased will determine how you are to wire the K2 mic configuration header - i.e. if you purchased the adapter for Kenwood, wire the mic configuration header as shown in the KSB2 manual for Kenwood, if you purchased the Icom adapter, use the Icom configuration, etc. If you do not know the mic element type so you can answer the resistor question, contact Heilsound mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - tell them the full mike designation number, your adapter number and that you will be using it with a K2 - you should receive an informed answer. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- I have got my self a =raveler Dual Side headset from Heil. Re: [Elecraft] XV-144 bandwidth
Hi Stan If i have got it right in my setup, that seems to work ok in the VHF contest in Denmark, you need to specify what the K2 display should show when the K2 are on the freq you have setup in IF setting. Ie if 28 Mhz are set in IF setting and and 144 in RF setting. The K2 will show 144 when running at 28 MHz to/from the XV144. That is how mine are set up. Spec on XV144 say input freq from 28-30 Mhz. The rolloff you see is not new to me. I have had fun with that as well. I have asked here some time ago. Clearly the issue are the preformances of the 28 Mhz band. If you check there you will proberly see the freq roll off as you approach 29 Mhz Or in my case quite much before that. As I understood from the answers here. That is quite normale. I noticed that the power starts dropping off around 144200 at the low end, and 145500 at the top end of the band. Shouldn't I get full out put across the bandwidth of the unit? I feel like I have set it up improperly and am not getting best performance. [Elecraft] Filter alignment once again
Hi Guys Can someone give and advice on my filter calibration on SSB, if I am on the right track. I have been looking through all the mail on filter calibration and have now got it clear, that I will use FL1 only for TX and have focused on getting the K2 to sound "good" (a very subjective thing I know). Then FL2-4 used for RX. FL1 are tuned by listening to the TX from K2 on my FT817 and changing the BF until the sound are good. (all of this done due to reports I have received telling that I sounded very sharp.. In audio that is J. ) FL2-4 have then been tuned based on TX from FT817 listening on K2 RX, to make the sound ok. After that the result are checked with spectrogram using the N-gen as input. The result is found in a word in the following location: http://aprs.the-jensen-dk.net/OZ1BZJK2filter.doc No my concern are as I use PSK31 a lot, if I am going to be in trouble using FL2-4 as RX filter, when FL1 are used. With the alignment I have tried here. I seem to have a issue in LSB, where I can not set the BF any lower then what it is now, but maybe ok as it sound ok. This is my second filter calibration. The first was done only using spectrogram for all filters. Thanks in advance OZ1BZJ Michael ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Thank List and Don x2 and Matt You hit it right on. Pressing Display & Tune bypassing the power reduction of the KAT2, did get the power up to about 0.57mW from the 0.2. Replacing R6 with a 470 Ohm on the KAT2 did the rest. Now low power controle seems to be ok and the first on air test of the XV144 work great. Still a few things to do RF seems to sneak in some where, maybe i was not good enough removing the paint. Then a issue on the K2, that the freq on XV144 are 1,2 Khz off. Proberly the VCO alignmant of K2 or maybe i just need to make an adjustment in the Menu setup of the transverter. The Transverter also seems to drift on TX for the first 5-10 min of use. I had a VHF contester to provide me with report. So maybe an oven are needed. Br. I have now found that pressing tune with the atu installed result in only 0.2 mW on the low power out. removing the atu control cable from the control board the low power out are now 1mW pressing tune. i do not have a power meter able to measure that level, but i belive having the atu installed makes the low power output to be about 1/5 using tune to tx. Seems that low power out are ok when keying the k2 with the mic and with the atu installed. Only measurement i could do was to to check the output from the transverter. I aligned the xv144 using the k2 with out the atu. so 1 mW displayed on the display giving 20W on the xv144. Installing the atu in k2 pressing tune give 6w from the xv144. Now keying with mic shouting the south european olaaa drive xv144 to 20w. any word on this please thanks in advance OZ1BZJ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] atu effect on low power out of kxv60 (was xv144 alignment )
When i installed the kxv60 i did not have the atu installed. After a broken diode every thing tested ok. atu was installed. And tested ok. RE: [Elecraft] XV144 calibration
Proberly i should try this one on the hole list as well, sorry don for you getting it twice. Hi Don again thanks The SSB Firmware was ok, version 1.8 so no problem there. Now i have found the issue on the K2, but not the solution. The desribed issue seen on the low power out are comming from the 28-30 Mhz. if i check indicated power by the internal powermeter it drops over the freq. with the power set for 5W i do reach 5.4 W on 28 Mhz at 29 Mhz it is 4,9, still ok but at 30 Mhz it is down at 0,3 W So trying 10 W 29 Mhz only goes to same 4.9, so a rolloff on increasing freq. are seen. Proberly normal, but passband seems to be to narrow ??? Any idea is this normal ?? Thanks in advance Br. OZ1BZJ Michael - Original Message - From: Don Wilhelm To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Elecraft Support Sent: Tuesday, February 21, 2006 3:52 PM Subject: RE: [Elecraft] XV144 calibration Michael, If your K2 is SN 5111 and the KSB2 was ordered at the same time as your K2, then you have the latest KSB2 firmware - Elecraft does not ship any options with back level firmware. Yes, if you could achieve only 0.17 mW from the K60XV in TUNE with a 1mV MENU setting, that is the problem that must be resolved first. I believe you have something wrong with the K60XV, and I am stumped at the moment. I do not have the setup to try what you suggested here at this time, but the behavior you describe is not normal. Perhaps Gary Surrency can provide some further information and guidance. I am copying Gary on this email. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, February 21, 2006 9:30 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; elecraft@mailman.qth.net; 'Don Wilhelm' Subject: RE: [Elecraft] XV144 calibration Thanks Don Good point, i have proberly been a little careless on this SW requirement, as i got the K2#5111 with all options in one shipment from Elecraft. I guess they normal take good care that the right versions are included when shiping together. But i will indeed check as soon i get home from work. If you are the owner of the XV144 and using it in the Low power setup, could i ask you to use the tune button to TX the transverter with the power set to the full. and the see if your K2 display will show the 1 mW about. In my case it showed something like 0.17mW with the power set to full 1mW, and i tuned the XV144 according to that. Only now i think about if that display was really true i have tuned the XV to deliver max power at 1/5 input. Then maybe if Keying with the mike. are giving the 1mW no wonder i overload the XV. Thanks in advance OZ1BZJ BR. Michael On Tue Feb 21 13:11 , "Don Wilhelm" sent: Michael, Check the 'Firmware Requirements' section of the K60XV manual. You must have Version 1.07 or later of the KSB2 firmware installed to provide proper power level control when using SSB through the low-power output. It does sound like you have an earlier version of the KSB2 firmware. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > A question on the XV calibration. > > I am trying to align the XV144 using K2 with XV60 to drive the > transverter. Re: [Elecraft] Using K2 with broken D1 on the K60XV
Hi Don Thanks for confirming me on the use with the broken pin Diode. For the issue with S meter i did not explain the case very good. The issue I see is in RX not in TX . I have not testede the K60XV in TX yet. But in RX the S meter show full signal (all bar light). This do only happen in the transverter band on 10M or even on the 60M everything looks ok. Nothing are connected to the low power in/out on the K2. Br. Michael Original Message - From: "Don Wilhelm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "'Elecraft Reflector'" Sent: Thursday, January 05, 2006 8:58 PM Subject: RE: [Elecraft] Using K2 with broken D1 on the K60XV Michael, You are correct - the PIN doides D1 and D2 form the T/R switch for the low power output. If you do not use the low power output, you can operate the K2 from the normal BNC antenna jack as usual without that diode installed. The number of bars on the K2 LED during transmit indicate the approximate power output of the K2 - if you had the LED Display set for RF, the Low power output set for 1 mW maximum, and the requested power set for 1 mW, the expected result would be all bars lighted. If you dialed only .5 mW on the K2 power request knob, one would expect only 5 of the bars lighted. If you have all bars lighted no matter what the power request setting, you should look into the circuits at the lower right quadrant of the K60XV schematic (labeled XVTR ALC) - you will find the problem with that portion of the circuit. I would need more detail to provide additional information. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- During last night trying to finish op the asssembly of the K60XV i faced=a issue, that during the test on the transverter band (50 MHz) the S=meter was showing full signal at all times. Only on the transverter band n=t on 60M or any other band. In desperation i was looking for bad soldering=pushing a little to the components. I did hit D1, the pind diode that ofca=se broke. I have ofcause placed an order to replace this diode, but it wil= not arrive here for the weekend. Beeing a lazzy basterd, i like to use th= K2 for the weekend, but i do not like to remove the K60XV and put back th= components. Now the question, for what i can see it will not be a issue t= use the K2 with the K60XV installed with a broken or removed diode if&nbs=;a transverter is not used. Did i get that wrong ?? If any comments on the S meter showing full signal, they are welcome as =ell Thanks in advance OZ1BZJ Michael ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] KAT2 difference betwen Auto and ALT mode
Hi Just to get my curiosity under control. Do any of you now the main difference in the procedure taking place when tuning in Auto mode and in ALT mode. ALT cover more combinations, maybe ALT cover all of them ? If so how are the combinations selected that Auto try, by a cleaver algorithm or is just the same limited combinations selected every time? Do a tune always start by relay reset, rather then from the current relay position ? I just had a hard to tune antenna experience where auto tuned 80m 9:1 and 20m 4,5:1 Alt did 3:1 and 1,5:1 on the same bands there for my question. (The antenna was not very good) Br. [Elecraft] K2 #5111 on air for the first time
Hi I just like to share the great feeling of the first QSO with the K2. To night it came live in a 40M SSB QSO with PA3FAO some 450 Km, from my new QTH, not great DX but a QSO it was. Setup was a longwire sloping from the flag pole about 10 M long, feed by a T1 tuner (wire coming through the small opening of a almost closed door. To cold a round here to sit in shorts outside and play with radio). The K2 was with the SSB option installed, since I have not yet had the opportunity to learn the code (Had to wait few more days to go live until I got the SSB option done :-( ). Might still have some current consumption to verify, might get back to that here when investigated, but beside from that a great feeling. Most time spend on the assembly, but in due time the following link will be updated with the progress of #5111. www.the-jensen-dk.net Br. OZ1BZJ Michael PS. Do not worry I have week before last week got my self a paddle from HRO in San Diego. Visit the area few times a year for business. So I will give learning the code a go. With the price of the paddle a big go :-) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr.
