Also if using front and rear mics, while using rear mic, you can use PTT on

[Elecraft] [K3] Thanks for the RIT tip.

2013-05-03 Thread Mike Rodgers
I don't remember but someone a week or so ago was talking about vfo tuning
rates and using the RIT knob for tuning with RIT off.
I've set the RIT for 0.5kc rate. This allows you to leave VFO in in fine rate
and use the RIT knob for coarse/fast qsy or band scanning.

How sweet it is. Thanks.

It's covered in the manual, configuration menu section under VFO CRS.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Speakers for K3

2013-04-23 Thread Mike Rodgers
Most are satisfied with small speakers and some like the big 8-12 ones that
seem to cut some of the high frequency hiss.

It's not one size fits all and even a particular speaker size is not a one size
fits all. I can see where a speaker enclosure that matches would be desirable
for a lot of folks where you could install your preferred speaker.
Look at how many $200 speakers with filters have been sold by the big3 to match
their radios.

I've used small ones, a kenwood one and currently using an old classroom public
address speaker. It seems the large ones are hard to find around here.

I've also finally got rid of my hiss/roar/frying bacon with the addition of a
external equalizer and mainly pushing the 3.5 slider of the unit to -4 to -6db.
(3.2 on k3 @-16).
RFI was a bit of a problem for my close antenna.

[Elecraft] [K3] Possible remedy for my noisy K3 and hiss?

2013-03-19 Thread Mike Rodgers
I'm in the early stages of trying this out but thought I'd share in interest of
helping someone else.

I've been using AGC threshold 10.
Im always fiddling with attenuator and rf gain.

I was listening to some activity on 20 40 and began playing with agc
settings.
I ended up at a threshold that is totally not what I suspected to like. 2.
You've got to be kidding,right,2?

The downside is this can really decrease volume available especially with NR.
I've just been using this a night and morning but one thing is apparent, I'm
not constantly fiddling with attenuator and rf gain anymore.
Threshold 2 slope 5-10.
Noise level s5 on 20m.

I also picked up a GAP/BHI speaker and like the NR. It doesn't reduce volume as
much. The best K3 match I found is NR F8-2 or 3. I really don't wish to use NR.

The hiss I've been complaining about with hi cut above 2.4 or 2.5 is
drastically reduced also. I don't like 3.0 but 2.8 is pretty good.

I've got to spend more time in the saddle with these settings but I'm putting
this out there for anyone else having pains with noise/rf gain.

Once again bottom line: I'm not constantly fiddling with attenuator and rf gain
with threshold 2.

2013-03-19 Thread Mike Rodgers
Hi Don,

Not so. I made the adjustments while listening to qso's in progress. I guess I
didn't make that clear. Not strong ones that block all the noise but medium
ones. This may come down to operator preference but it's something to try.

And the tell all as I said is I'm no longer constantly fiddling with attenuator
and rf gain to try to get something I like.

Review the Noisy K3 article on my website www.w3fpr.com paying
particular attention to the 'Caution' note in the AGC THR section.

That article will give you guidance on what the effects of the changes
will be so you can evaluate each separately.
Do the evaluation with any external NR speaker bypassed or removed.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Re:S METER

2013-03-12 Thread Mike Rodgers

Fred, I don't believe there is any reason to turn agc off anymore with the
newer firmware that allow for more threshold.

It is sometimes a advantage to ride the rf gain to make a signal more easy to
copy and the noise easier on the ears.

A quiet antenna helps too. My hy gain hytower vertical has less band noise than
my loop on 20.

I've got maybe a bad habit using the rf gain for a volume control.
When you do this it renders the s meter useless. I've kinda got away from that
but using rf gain to the point where it only raises the the smeter a couple
digits doesn't do much. Agc off has no effect on the s meter issue.
Also there's more noise on ssb due to a wider bandwidth.

Hope that helps. I don't want to beat this to death but it a aggravation for
some. I've got used to it, I've had to!
A 20db attenuator would have helped too. Noise reduction can help but it
reduces the volume it seems and if very aggressive you get that under water
sounding thing.

Anyway, there's nothing can be done about it so I'm for putting this to bed.

Don,

I always seem to have my RF gain adjusted by ear to below where the
s-meter will deflect on a particular signal. So I will most always
have to readjust the gain to see an s-meter reading. The RF gain can
be adjusted much lower than the signal's meter deflection point but
still have an audible signal. A moderate strength signal can still be
heard when the RF gain has been turned down to the point where the
s-meter incicates s9+40 db.

The more I think about it the less useful it seems to have the meter
deflect upward with a lowered RF gain setting. Does anyone find this
action useful for tuning in a signal?

I know that I would be fiddling around with the RF gain control a lot
less if the s-meter display was not affected by the gain control. Why
not make the s-meter absolute mode, which is independent of the
attenuation setting, also independent of the RF gain control? That
seems more consistent and logical to me.

Drew

[Elecraft] [K3] Re: New Output Power Questions

2012-12-26 Thread Mike Rodgers
Everything you add on the 13.8v line is likely to cause a problem at some point
in time. My k3 came with no fuses on the power cord with same explanation.

If your going to use fuses, use the oversize car stereo variety for more
contact area. Gold plated ones available as well. Even Wal Mart has them now.

When Lan reported the issue, nothing was said that I recall about a power
distribution panel. Some of those panels have a fuse for every output. That's a
nice feature but also a place for problems.

To each his own but I run straight to the power supply. I also use a primitive
power distribution for other 12v devices using some nice stackable banana plugs
that are gold plated that cinch down down even a heavy gauge wire.
They are a little pricey at Radio Shack but I like them.

[Elecraft] [K3] k3 hiss update.

2012-12-01 Thread Mike Rodgers
For those that have or can hear this problem, some thanks to Chris are finding
some relief with a big 8-10 old school speaker. redoing eq is required.
I havnt been able to locate one. I don't know If this sacrifices all highs or
not.

What I wonder is does this have anything to do with a 2.7 5 pole filter with
offset versus 2.8 8 pole with no offset?

I'd like to hear preferably direct from those with the issue as to which filter
you have?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] [K3] k3 hiss update.

2012-12-01 Thread Mike Rodgers
I've already heard from someone who has the hiss with the 2.8 filter so
apparently the 2.7 has nothing to do it.

He did say the big speaker he found has a response of 40-2500.

[Elecraft] [K3] Re:K3-Receive settings

2012-11-27 Thread Mike Rodgers
Funny Thing, mine sounds just fine on LSB lo cut 200. Hi cut 2900.

On USB a locut of 200 sounds bad.
I'm wondering if it could have anything to do with a 5 pole filter offset.

Looking for a big speaker like Chris recommended.

[Elecraft] [K3] need help with hiss on ssb receive

2012-11-23 Thread Mike Rodgers
I've been putting up with this hiss on receive for two years. Others have
complained as well. It sounds like a rushing wind. Kinda like old cassette tape
hiss. It's the dirty little secret no one wants to talk about and the first
thing that comes up on other forums when you mention k3. The most common being
tiring to listen to.

I think I've got it the best it can be but I'm looking for tips to make it
better.
It keeps me from listening wide. Any hi cut above 2400 starts to irritate me so
that limits me to a width of 2.1!

Others complain on LSB but to me it seems more noticeable on USB where I hang
out.

It's a two year old k3 #5047 running latest firmware (not the beta).
It's not Agc related as its the same with agc off.

I feel I have a very aggressive negative eq as follows.

0. 0. 0. -3. -3. -12. -12/16. -16

I love the rig except for this. I'm not planning to sell it but I would like to
make it better if possible.
Right now I'm stuck at a width of 2.1 because of this. Am I doomed to just get
used to it? I can filter it out with a kenwood speaker with filters but that's
really just doing the same as reducing hi cut or bandwidth.

Any ideas welcomed.

Thanks and 73
Mike R

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Headphone audio.

2012-10-14 Thread Mike Rodgers
I have not noticed this problem with my setup. I have the headset plugged in
the back. I do have a inline volume control built in to the headset but I think
I keep at full volume most of the time to drown out the external speaker.

My only thought is, do you have speakers + phones selected? If not this may
reduce the level to each.

I have seen external volume control add ons. They may however be stereo 1/8
devices.

Best of luck.

In a pinch you can get some at Big Lots store for 5 or 10 bucks. They are the

Since the ear part is small that sit on your ear not around they are no sweat.

[Elecraft] [K3] K3 power reduction due to high swr

2012-04-05 Thread Mike Rodgers
For the k3/10, I'm not exactly sure about high swr per say but I was having a
problem a year ago with the lo power board on the 10w model.
Wayne told me at that time at that time
The low power board had so little problems that he hadn't got around to writing
code for impedance mismatch.

There has been a lot of new products since then so I suspect it's still way
down on the to do list.

If there is a failure with one of the fet's,
It will not pass the 5w calibration test and the first thing I noticed was the
DVR quit working.

Sorry to be long winded, the short answer as far as I know is there is not yet
swr foldback on K3/10.

73
Mike R

At what point does the SWR have to rise up to before

the K3/10 output power begins to decrease?

I have been using a TS-830 which is not bothered by

SWR up to at least 3:1. I cannot get the tuner now so

will I be forced to run very low power if my SWR is 2

or 3 to 1? What about the K3/100?

My antennas are resonant fan dipoles (80, 40, 20, 17)

fed with 250 feet of 72 ohm cable TV coax.

Re: [Elecraft] flex or kx3

2012-04-03 Thread Mike Rodgers
Steve , sounds like you want a SDR rig. I'm reluctant to put my guess out there
but I think $1000 will be a little high for the amp but perhaps not too much.

A lot of people like the flex but their is a lot of horror stories getting a
computer working correctly with it.
It might not be the ideal first hf rig!
I would certainly do my homework as it sounds like you are doing.

If your not planning to go mobile or portable(hard to do with a flex), consider
the K3. Although 10w not for everyone, I have had much success with 10w on 6-20
60m. 40,75,160 with high noise is more challenging but I think the transmit
audio and processing are outstanding.
My main antenna is a 80m loop.

[Elecraft] Re K3 filters

2012-03-30 Thread Mike Rodgers
Ed wrote

Lying to your K3 may be cute to say, but it detracts from what is really
going on. That filter parameter simply sets the DSP bandwidth at which the
crystal filter engages, and for all narrower bandwidths until the next
crystal filter engages. The crystal filter and the DSP filter can have
three basic relationships, all with different results. One filter can be
significantly wider than the other or they can be close to the same
bandwidth. There are lots of K3s configured in each of these three ways and
the users that understand the implications of their particular choice will
have one or more reasons for that choice. One popular reason for engaging
the crystal filter at a significantly wider DSP bandwidth, is that the shape
of the audio passband is rounder (because it is dominated by the crystal
filter passband shape) and sounds a bit different than when the more
rectangular DSP passband dominates, i.e, is narrower than the crystal
filter. One popular reason for engaging the crystal filter when the DSP
bandwidth is well inside it, is to maintain consistent bandwidth steps as
the K3 IF bandwidth is varied via the WIDTH or HI/LO-CUT controls. Users
that care about this usually don't confuse the marketing name of the filter,
e.g., 250 Hz, with the actual bandwidth, e.g., 370 Hz.

Ed - W0YK

Ed, I went back and looked at some filter and dsp plots and see that this
indeed causes a softer filter scenario. Too bad you cant switch on the fly!

I may play around with that. I normally use the 2.7 filter. No 2.1. Engage 1.8
at 1.8.

I think if I need the filter I would want it sharp as qrm is the reason I'm
narrowing the bandwidth. I don't contest and maybe a soft 2.1 is more desirable
when running a frequency?

I'll have to experiment with how it sounds different. Is it more pleasing to
the ear?

[Elecraft] Re k3 filters.

2012-03-28 Thread Mike Rodgers
Don, I thought the comment rather tongue in cheek. Some consider all caps
akin to cursing.

As to lying to the k3 as to the filter you have put in it's slot which I think
more than a few do.
If you have told the k3 that it's a 2.1 but it's actually 1.8 and you have dsp
set to 2.1, isn't it actually 1.8 and lying to yourself? No offense meant.

Is there some advantage to this other than allowing one to jump filter to
filter like the old days?

I have seen reference to cascading filters but isn't that having the dsp the
same as the filter? Could someone as to before mentioned benefit and cascading
filters to clear this up for me.
I don't see the point in lying to the k3 but wonder if I'm missing a valuable
tool?

While a 20a supply will get you by for the 100w radio, a 30a will provide

[Elecraft] [K3] K3 break in with amp question

2012-03-17 Thread Mike Rodgers
I'm sure it was not realized but the company called SGC makes many ham radio
products. They are most known for their smart tuners.
Also dsp speakers and powercube amps.

Although there is no mention of FCC certification, they do mention modification
may cause decertification.
The USA model was shipped for all hf bands and required a mod for 10m like all
others at the time. There are filters for all hf bands.

They have advertised in qst full page ads for the amp in the past.

I know this was a honest omission.
I'd just hate to see this cb thing get out of hand.

[Elecraft] [K3] K3 Fuses

2012-03-10 Thread Mike Rodgers
Might I suggest if you are going to use fuses, invest in the oversize car
stereo type. Some are gold plated, available in cartridge and blade type.
I believe the blade type are available at wal mart. A bigger contact area
should have less resistance. Remember if you fuse the negative that will double
resistance and usually only called for in mobile use.
I would also suspect the power poles and wish they weren't used but many love
em.

If you mean using the k3 dvr to record someone and play it back to them, that's
a old problem Elecraft said they would address a year or so ago!!!

There needs to be a way to adjust the level and there is not at present.

Recently got feedback from John, ON4UN (also has K3) that his audio
playback from my K3 DVR was horrible. He played my recording of him back
to me and in fact it was pretty bad. Signals were solid. I have heard a few
other such reports about my K3 DVR playback. I cannot currently remove the
transmit equalizer (works great as set with my voice and Heil 781) for each
playback. ON4UN suggested using ESSB and setting up no transmit
equalization and to switch back and forth.

A couple questions emerge from this:(1)Is there a way to bypass the
compression (mine is set at 10) and equalization with current setup during
DVR playback until a firmware change is made on this issue? (2)Could I have
a correctable situation that a currently available adjustment might improve
or solve? (I do not think it is possible to adjust DVR record* or* playback
levels and ALC levels appear high on playback) Any similar experiences or
advise?

The K3 is certainly where it is in the *sales* pecking order because of
DXers and contesters. Not much need to pay for the extra performance a
K3 offers if all you're going to do is rag chew and check into nets.

Dave AB7E

I'm thankful for the dx'ers and contesters that keep the money flowing but I'm
neither.
I'm a rag chewer to the fullest. I don't like nets in general but... I used to
partake in a rag chew net on 14.305 and about 15-30 minutes into the net,
another one started on
14.3075 which gave me fits!
That's what led me to get a k3!

It may not matter if your spinning the dial but if you have scheds or something
similar it does. It's also fulfilling to operate such a fine piece of
equipment.

I know we rag chewers are a minority and I'm ok with that. I work a lot of weak
signal 6-20m plus 60m. Very little 40 and no 75.

I second the notion of using hi/lo cut on ssb. Lo of 200 or sometimes 300
works well and it will sound better without having to constable shift the
passband ( I was hard headed about this but finally saw the light or heard
 the difference)

I've struggled with the hiss issue and now running the top equalizer 3.2 at
-16 and I think the next one down 2.4 at -16 but might be -12. I'm on the
road at this time. I'm mostly satisfied with that.

There are a couple other eq's I've found to help with band noise.

Bill, try the top 2 EQ's at -16 to start.

[Elecraft] [K3] ptt. Tip. And rx band noise

2012-02-02 Thread Mike Rodgers
I have been a lazy procrastinator in building a ptt switch. I have discovered
that when using a headset to the rear the front ptt is active so if one has a
hand mic on the front it can be used for ptt if desired.

And my one and only complaint has been how band noise sounds or hiss with a
wide setting. I have changed eq #8 3.2 from zero to -16 and seems to
help greatly but I need more time to listen.

[Elecraft] [K3] power output

2012-01-18 Thread Mike Rodgers
My k3/10 puts out slightly more. Sometimes 9 or 9.5 watts equals 10.
Since that drives the 100w pa I would expect a greater amount at 100w.
I just figured it had to do with compression on ssb. Try it with zero
compression. Also advise how much more it's putting out.

[Elecraft] [K3]. NB Theory

2011-12-30 Thread Mike Rodgers
Arg. I've been having to employ the noise blanker for the first time after
a year of owning the k3. At least it's only on one antenna, a home brew 10m
wire beam.

Anyway I'm using the noise blanker in
I.F. Not dsp. This caused me to remember discussions about NB sample spectrum
and widening the spectrum of what any rig sees and opening the door to possible
QRM.

Do both I.F. And dsp noise blanker open this door?

Thanks

[Elecraft] K3. 240v power plugs?

2011-12-15 Thread Mike Rodgers
Hi David, good question!

Inquiring minds want to know!

You got all the scientific and technical lowdown. Pull up a seat and I'll give
you the laymans lowdown! Hee hee.

Very old houses didn't have 240.
They even had screw in fuses.

As for history, I'm not sure why 240 came along but I expect it had to do with
selling something. Seems everything does.

Most all home here now have refrigerated air conditioning which pulls loads of
current on 240. I don't think it's possible on 120. They call it 120 but
actually it varies a good bit and my power supply builder says that's a problem
that sometimes makes power supplies run hot.

When I was a kid in the 70's living in west Texas a dry climate, this
transformation to refrigerated air was going on. Much to the delight of power
utility cash registers I'm sure!!!

I remember homes as a kid not having
240. I think all clothes dryers require 240 but in those days most drying was
done outside on clothes lines.
And seems now like electric cookstoves been around forever but they have not
and of course they are
240.

In days gone by just 120 was common.
In town natural gas was piped to every house for heat, cooking, waterheating.
In the country you have propane or butane and in the northeast USA a tank for
heating oil.
These days and for some time houses have been all electric
Sure gets cold when the lights go out!

I live five miles out of town. Dependable electric and propane.
The worst is only dial up Internet.
The best is low noise level.
But hey! We're cooking with gas!!

I was just talking to my friend in England. Everythings 240. All the bulky
plugs are the same. Circuits different.

As for ham radio some amplifiers on 120 cause the room lights to dim a bit, you
know they're quite usefull as modulation indicators. I'm sure they operate with
less voltage drop on 240
And more stable and higher output.
Hams you are not satisfied with less than full power or even more.

I'm sure you've seen the 100w k3
Or heard about it doing 120w!

I've got a very old Gonset amp with 4 811 tubes(valves) that dimms lights.
Well it used to before it died!

[Elecraft] [K3] ssb rx close to noise floor

2011-12-12 Thread Mike Rodgers
Just wanted to pass this on. I'm still learning and loving this rig.

I've started messing around with the receiver equalizer again and have found
some improved readability when
Working weak signal near the noise floor.

At times turning agc off seems to reduce noise a bit. No surprise here.
Using a agc slope of 15 seems to give a better signal to noise ratio on weak
signal. RF gain again no surprise helps extremely well.

I run normally lo cut at 300 and hi cut
2100. I found today while listening to some weak signals that adjusting eq on 6
(1.6) down made a noticeable improvement in s/n at around -6

7 (2.4) all the way down to -16

And 5 (.8) made some slight improvement.

I'll continue playing around bands 6,7,5
and see.

Merry Christmas and happy k3'ing

[Elecraft] Re (Elecraft ) 160 m loop a big failure

2011-10-16 Thread Mike Rodgers
Don, I'm certainly sad to hear your having problems. Do you have any excess
ladder line in the shack? That's about the only thing I can think of.

My only rfi has been in amplified speakers on 17m. The feedpoint of my
80 m delta loop is 25' from the shack over the house. The house is not inside
the loop but under one corner.
300 ohm line come inside to a manual tuner. The old mfj had a 1:1 balun and the
palstar I now use is 4:1 but the 1:1 worked. Their is a gap vertical inside the
loop. I used to run 500 w but now run qrp most of the time.
Did you have the issue at 100w and is shack on ground or basement level.

Also some commented on loops being
Nvis antennas and they are on the cut frequency but the elevation take off
angle comes down at multiple wavelengths. Their pattern is best compromise at 3
or 4 wavelengths.

And it seems to me that 99% of Elecrafters are contesters so I'm shocked this

[Elecraft] [k3] dvr playback question

2011-08-14 Thread Mike Rodgers
I thought the question was in regard to recording another ham on the air and
playing it back to him over the air?

It was said the alc was sky high thus the playback not being a accurate
representation with no way to adjust except rf gain trial and error.

I have not used my dvr for that but find it hard to believe that it's not come
up before? And Lyle thanking the gentleman for bringing it to his attention.
Surely there's got to be operators doing this successfully. No?

Of course I could have totally misunderstood the question.

[Elecraft] [OT] 15m self oscillation

2011-07-21 Thread Mike Rodgers
Not necessarily with a k3 but any rig. I and others have had issues with a 706
on 15 or 17 and I don't remember which.
I had a weird swr issue and maybe self oscillation on 15. Blew my lpa board
again.( it's my understanding that there is no swr protection for that board
yet because of so few problems but this my third).
I don't know if this could be caused by a dirty roller inductor, I'm going to
clean it.
When I switched over to the 706 I noticed intermittent the cross needles go
straight up. May have been self oscillating, don't know. I believe they would
stay straight up with no modulation.

Ideas?
Thanks

I have these same birdies (at least I suppose they're the same) and
I suspect that all K3 have them. The most annoying ones are where the CW
action usually occurs (50.09430, 20 dB above noise floor) and a number

several major ones up where the SSB action occurs: 50.21050, 50.24055,
etc. which are all 20+ dB above the noise floor. These are not
external blips (not computer, not router, etc.) as they are present
when nothing else is on, and they are present when the antenna is
disconnected.

I treat them by ignoring them. They are sharp, stable, and
unmodulated. My ear can differentiate between them and real signals
without any problem. They are features for calibration... ;) Every
modern rig I have ever owned has had similar warts.

 Mike,

For those who want an additional attenuator added such that the K3 S-meter
does not increase like it does when the RF Gain is backed off - install an
external attenuator between the RX ANT OUT and RX ANT IN jacks and tap RX ANT
to switch it in or out.

That will allow the user to reduce the RX gain while leaving the RF Gain set
at the full clockwise rotation and the S-meter will read from the bottom of
 the scale.

Of course, that additional attenuation is not calculated into the S-MTR ABS
calculation in the K3, so you will have to mentally add an S-unit or two to
 what the S-meter is showing - with a 6 dB attenuator, add 1 S-unit, 12 dB,
 add 2 S-units, etc.

This scheme does require the installation of the KXV3.

[Elecraft] K3. NR

2011-05-18 Thread Mike Rodgers
It's not in the manual but I've seen it suggested here that 1-x thru 4-x is for
cw and 5-x and up for ssb.
I used to use 5-1 or 2 but now liking
6-1 to 6-3 so if your using 1 or 2 on ssb, try 5 or 6.

[Elecraft] K3. RX too sensitive for me

2011-05-17 Thread Mike Rodgers
I've got a lot of noise which I attribute to a sensitive receiver. If possible
I would like to find a way to reduce it somehow maybe artificially. This would
go a long way towards increasing my listening pleasure.
My agc dcy is soft. Hold is zero
Pls is nor,slope 10 threshold 8
Agc-f 120. S- 20. I generally keep it on fast.

S meter noise level usually 4-5
If I could use the rf gain to reduce it to s1 or 2 I'd like that. I know the s
meter wouldn't be accurate but I'd like it better instead of now showing s9 or
so when backing down rf gain. Would changing the s meter mode to ABS allow the
meter to do that?

If the filter gain could go below zero I would do that. Maybe that could be
implemented?

Ideas?

[Elecraft] ?change net frequency?

2011-04-25 Thread Mike Rodgers
If there is consensus to change, I propose the possibility of 14.305.
It's lightly used as far as I know. There are nets during the week from the
beautiful day net at 92 central time
And some Saturday's. There's the west coast prestigious group net at 1pm
central. Not sure if they are on the weekend. Some of you west coasties may
know. Other than that it's fairly quiet. The 24hr maritime net is far enough
away at 14.300. Sometimes QRM from 14.307.5. If 14.304 would be far enough from
the maritime net, then itwould be better in case of activity on 14.307.5.

[Elecraft] Re. K3 receive audio

2011-04-12 Thread Mike Rodgers
First of all, thanks for all the helpful replies.

Second, it is possible to get someone to see the light.

Early indications are I like the method of using hi/lo cut for ssb. I just
didn't want to give up using shift and width.
I see how much better this works and also for maximizing the sound quality of a
given received signal. I believe this method makes the k3 sound better.

I have the receive equalizer set to zero and using hi/lo to make the cut. Does
this sound right? Are any of you tweaking the receive eq? I don't really see
the need for receive eq when using hi/lo cut on ssb?

Thanks so much.

[Elecraft] Re k3 receive audio

2011-04-10 Thread Mike Rodgers
I've got a 3month old k3. I was impressed with how full bodied or maybe even hi
fidelity some of the audio sounded but I eventually grew tired of how the
background band noise sounded in my rural QTH. The best I can describe is it
had a high edge to it. I eventually went to a vacant frequency and adjusted the
equalizer to get the noise to sound more natural to my liking. That was fine
but the signal audio was now kind of plain or dull or monotone, no more full
rich sound.
I've since discovered that narrowing the bandwidth to 2.4 removes a lot of
noise so I'm currently trying that and have changed the equalizer to a more
neutral setting. I think I'm liking that better.
I like to use width and shift. I like to know where their at but I know a lot
of
Operators prefer hi/lo cut on ssb. I'll soon try that as well and hopefully
find
That full audio with non irritating noise.

[Elecraft] Re k3/100/F

2011-03-29 Thread Mike Rodgers
Congrats on ordering the new rig.
You'll want to download the k3 utility from the Elecraft website. If your
computer has a rs-233 port, that is the best way to communicate to the k3.
You'll need a straight thru cable.
If you only have a USB port, I highly recommend getting the KUSB cable from
Elecraft. Don't use the installation disc that comes with it but rather
download the drivers from the website.

Using k3 utility save the current configuration just as a precaution.

It may not be necessary if you've done the above but I took the manual and went
thru the configuration menu and wrote down all the settings for each right in
the manual. To change to different menu selections you use vfo b. To change
the value of a setting you use the big knob vfo a. It IS VERY TEMPTING to get
that confused and change something accidentally.

You'll want to play around with agc slope and threshold. I settled on a slope
of 10 and threshold of 8
You'll find what you like best
Don't forget the receive equalizer either which is a very nice feature. I've
found not all speakers or phones sound the same. It's nice to tweak them with
the equalizer.

What a great rig!

However you pack it, it will be better than my recently purchased factory built

[Elecraft] Reason for choosing Elecraft

2011-02-22 Thread Mike Rodgers
Hi All, a couple reasons that stand out for me are that I like or love width
and shift and if you notice all or most other rigs have done away with them. Oh
yeah, their replaced by lo/ high cut or dual passband tuning. A lot of
elecrafters say that it's not needed on ssb that lo/ hi cut is much easier on
ssb ( not cw) but that don't CUT it for me. Pun intended. I really like the
fact that the shift is numbered. I have a little chart with which shift works
best with corresponding width.

2. I like the idea of narrow roofing filters although havnt proven their $130
value on ssb and I find myself using a width of 1.6 a lot on ssb.

3. I like the idea of being able to use a multitude of different microphones
and not having to shell out $150-$200 on a good mic.
