Just as an FTP suggestion -- If you are using Mozilla Firefox as a browser
(which IMO everyone should be), there is an FTP client plug-in called
FireFTP. It is a seriously awesome FTP app, it's FREE, and it works on MacOS
and Linux as well as on Windows of all flavors. You get a drag-and-drop
capable dual file system window -- one window for the FTP site, another for
your local file system.

If you ever use FTP, just being able to run this FTP plug-in client is
reason enough to upgrade your browser to Firefox (as if there weren't 100
other reasons). Can't recommend this FTP client highly enough.

Usually I have to open the beta link in another tab or copy and paste the

to bring up the new version.

I have not had this experience with any of the firmware versions; I have
been switching between many different releases as of late to help with some

I do not have the LPF installed yet. I will be receiving one soon though.
I find it hard to believe that the LPF could have something to do with this

Have you sent a message to K3 support?

Hi Lyle,

SSB output is certainly improved in F/W 4.18 compared with 4.17 but contrary
to what some others are saying it seems to me still to be down compared with
4.14. This morning I did a tx gain calibration and noted output from the amp
under 4.14. I then installed 4.18, cycled power on and off and did another
tx gain calibration. With all settings unchanged it was around 15% down on
4.14. Can anything more be done?

Credit where it is due, however, the APF feature is excellent, although I do
not often use CW so have gone back to 4.14 for now.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 MCU 4.17 (APF beta) kills SSB output?

2010-11-05 Thread Philippe Trottet
After many tries, on Dummy load first then with distant Ham friends, conclusion
was to re-installed MCU 4.14.
Instead of giving the same dynamic with the MH2 microphone, with my Amp on,
using 12w drive, using Mic=2 COMP=20, pronouncing the number 6 slowly, I have
seen immediately the difference.
For me, using a Amp w/GU84B tetrode, 12w drive on ssb give 500~600w on normal
voice operation.
With MCU 4.17 it gave only 300~400w and the power increase with difficulty on a
single whistle to 500w. and when I pushed to maxi drive 65~70w I was unable to
achieve the normal 64dBm+ of the Amp with normal voice.
Normal cw tune procedure seems not affected and I can achieve the maxi as
normal.

The most important:
It has been reported to me during the test on the air, some alteration of the
modulation, like a RFI ground phenomena on the microphone or like a under
voltage problem during transmitting.
I've checked all connections from A to Z and no problem founded. re-load 4.17,
installed it 2 times, with no changes.
When re-installing the MCU 4.14 everything is back to normal with the very
clear voice provided by the K3.
Sure Wayne will share with us what's happened, .APF is a so great add-up in
weak signal environment !

I have the same experience that Philippe has. I thought I had one or both
3cx800A7 tubes going flat in my amp when I had to increase the drive to a
level I never have been close to approaching to get 1KW out.

It's great to hear that you guys are on this new glitch so quickly.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 MCU 4.17 (APF beta) kills SSB output?

2010-11-04 Thread Philippe Trottet
Same thing to me, I was noticed it when put my Amp w/GU84B on, need 20w+ to
obtain 500w in ssb instead of my normal 16w. MH2 Mic dynamics was also
affected and obliged to increase the Mic gain consequently.
When back to NOR Dual PB features it comes back almost to normal power but
seems a bit lack of dynamic.
When download back the 4.14, everything returns to "normal".
I have download again the 4.17 and same "problem" occurs but let it like this
the time a solution will be available on line.
Anyway the APF is really impressive to extract the weak signal and really
enjoyed it. It is also a must to catch the beacons qrg's.
Bst 73s
Philippe A65BI

>>> "Dave Perry N4QS"  05-11-2010 4:34 >>>
I am seeing the same reduction in SSB output power. I installed 4.17 Beta
last night. It appears that the reduced power only occurs when I have APF
activated. I have twice restored SSB power by doing the following: 1).
Changing mode back to CW, 2). Going to Dual PB in Config menu and turning
APF off, 3). exiting Config menu, 4). changing mode back to SSB. Power is
restored back to a full 100 watts. With APF set to on, SSB power is reduced
to about 70 watts. I confirmed this on 17M by repeating the process twice,
and I then tried 20 M SSB and the power was back to 70 watts (after I had
turned APF back on.) Is this a problem with the beta release? I saw
Wayne's suggestion to do a TX gain calibration, but it seems strange that I
would only need to do this after installing Beta 4.17.

APF works great, but I need to resolve this SSB power issue. I may try RTTY
next to see what happens in that mode.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 APF Adjustable Q

2010-11-01 Thread Philippe Trottet
I agree with the comments about the use of the DPB filter who act as a APF
with wider Q.
May be the suggestion is to give more "flexibility" to the DBP filter in order
to let the K3 user choosing what would be the best in its own suppressing
noise environment.
73's
Philippe A65BI

>>> The Smiths  01-11-2010 12:24 >>>

Joe,

For some reason you keep thinking that Elecraft's APF is being designed and
programmed by Yaesu engineers Why is it that just because Yaesu made a
mistake with their rig that it means Elecraft has to destroy THEIR APF just
because they choose to add an adjustable Q control? You have to have
confidence that the APF can remain exactly the same as Lyle and the gang has
written it while still adding the ability to open it up some? Just because
Yaesu programmers weren't talented enough not to destroy what they had built
doesn't mean that Elecraft will make the same mistake.
Furthermore there are Alpha testers like myself that will make sure that once
the variable Q has been put in that when set to the Minimum (narrowest) setting
that it will still act and feel like it does now. Of course you too could do
the same as an Alfa software tester. This isn't Yaesu where no one listens to
the users once they choose to make a change or adjustment to the code... Your
say WILL matter if things sound different once the feature has been improved
for others. I really don't think that you're giving Elecraft, it's
programmers, or the Alpha testers such as myself enough credit.

I'm in favor of having a variable Q on this APF system. It will help improve
copy with a tight algorithm that Lyle has written for this one, while at the
same time allowing me to open the Q so that I can copy not as weak signals with
gain, and less ringing. I believe that Lyle will not destroy his own code by
adding a feature that Enhances the operation of what he's already created for
us. If he does, I will be the first to let him know so he can re-program it.
The Dual pass band filter is nice, yes, but if you've used your DPB filter in
the K3 you know as well as I do that it acts NOTHING like the APF with a wider
Q in suppressing noise and improving gain as we're seeing on this current APF.
Again, this is NOT a Yaesu rig...

[Elecraft] NCDXF/IARU Beacons

2010-09-08 Thread Philippe Trottet
Dear Elecrafters,
How to decode almost correctly the NCDXF/IARU beacons with a different pitch
than 700~800Hz
I'm using a pitch of 450Hz in order to use less bandwidth and it is more softer
to my ears, especially on long runs.
I can hear clearly the beacons with the 450Hz but even I'm shifting up the VFO
to listen a 600~700Hz tone, the decoder is not working even the pitch (so the
FC) has been moved to those values. CWT is off. Width is used between 50
~200Hz. Filter: 400Hz
AGC on or off do not change anything.
On the other hand he decoder seems not really "sensitive" on weak signals.
Any trick ?

Re: [Elecraft] Big box K3

2010-09-06 Thread Philippe Trottet
K3 has been primarily designed for portable use/dx-speditions & field days and
honestly I'm more focused and impressed from the results than the design.
Everything is functional and easy to access even with my big fingers and for
those who are lack of space (it's not my case) it would be an add-up.
A Steve says, to propose a "base" version would be a complete technical
re-design of the K3 and really on the financial side what would be the market
for a tiny company to invest in such a project ? Need to be sure to sold many
thousands of units, enroll more staff, even new engineering equipment, larger
premises, increasing exponentially the costs ...& taxes etc...
In that specific case, Wayne & Eric are listening to most of our realistic
comments and advises and the evolution of the K3 took our concerns to
consideration that is the Ham sprit at a level where no major company has gone
before.
Human being is never satisfied of one's lot but I think we have to be modest
and self adapted to the Elecraft rigs as they offer the best they can do.
If they propose a new rig in the future it would be another issue and all our
fears would have been analysed and well think over.

*Elecraft, for Hams, by Hams...What else ?

>>> "Steve Harvey"  10-08-2010 22:18 >>>
I don't really have a horse in this race because I am personally very happy
with my K3 (#693) and, knowing that Wayne's Engineering degree included
emphasis on Engineering Ergonomics, I am satisfied that he has given us the
best possible radio in the form factor that is most popular to most people
who represent his target market.

However, while there is nothing wrong with dreaming and asking for changes,
I wonder how many of the Big Box k3 requesters have considered the magnitude
of the effort required on Elecraft's part to deliver such a thing.

First, the job would not be as trivial as simply re-packaging the insides in
a bigger box. It would involve the design and testing of a new RF board and
front panel in order to remove controls and displays to a different front
panel (which would also have to be designed and tested) and to remove ports
to a different back panel. Internal cable routing, shielding, and structural
support would have to be altered with consequent testing as well. Cramming
the P3, KPA500, and a power supply inside would only complicate things
further. Also, because functions would have to be removed from menus and
associated with front panel hardware, the firmware would have to be
rewritten, which would require two versions to be maintained in parallel and
alpha/beta tested for each release to keep them in sync. Elecraft is a
small company, and most of the design and programming is done by only a
couple of people whose jobs would grow enormously, and which would deprive
other, more critical projects of their time and effort.

Second, how much would the Big Box people be willing to pay for the upgrade,
and how many could Elecraft expect to sell? My guess is that in order to
amortize the time and materials to develop such an upgrade given the
considerations above, each unit could cost as much as the K3 itself
(possibly more depending on expected sales volume), which could bring it
into the price range of some of the "big iron" with which it favorably
competes, both cost- and feature-wise. I suspect that there would not be
many takers at those prices.

I'm sorry that some of the current owners of K3s seem to be disappointed in
it. Every engineering project is a trade-off, and I think that Wayne and
Eric represent the Burt Rutans of the radio world. Given that, I don't
think that even Burt Rutan would consider adapting a VariEze (K2) or a
Starship (K3) into an AirBus form factor, and I doubt that very many
customers would buy one.

change fine. Then if you dont have any thing constructive to add, don't
play. Some of us do want something new. Something more. The K3 is GREAT! But
even the Queen of England could stand to refine herself a bit more. The

Why do some people fly off the handle of something so small. Take your toys

Who uses the Elecraft hand mic? I do and mic gain has to be set low; i.e.
around 8 or 9 to prevent clipping and flat topping as viewed on a monitor
scope. This is with mic sensitivity set to low in the menu. I was once told
that the hand mics are a tad hot, but mine seems to be excessively so.

Regardless, my comp is set to 15 or 20 and I get excellent audio reports.

I use the Heil MD2 microphone which has an electret element. I have both
compression and mic gain set to 25, and mic set to front panel low with
bias.

I have far more 'talk power' than I have enjoyed with any previous radio.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Repair

2010-07-04 Thread Philippe Trottet
Fully agree with your comments Don,

And I want to take the opportunity to encourage every Ham to pay more attention
to protect our lovely K's and all ellectronic devices in the house. I've seen
so many locations who are facing huge lightings storms and this does not happen
only to others, I'm a survival !
I do not want to start a thread beacause it is not directly related but I will
be happy to share my experience with those who are interesed.

To have some ideas what it is done today on lightning protection, please have a
look at:
http://www.indelec.com/foudre/Comprendre_la_foudre/Comprendre_la_foudre.aspx
I have no interest at all in this company but I have always pay very much
attention to be well protected in the various locations I was playing Ham
specially after an lightning hit when in France (F5LTB)
When in 2003, I arrived in Democratic Republic of Congo (9Q1TB), where
lightning protection is mandatory I was looking to the companies who can
provide such service and discover that one has a different and a technically
interesting approach. I have equipped my house and during the 5 years I stayed
in Kinshasa and never face any problem even the head of the lightning device up
to my antenna system on my metallic roof has been hitted many times by direct
lightings, my younger son can testify, the noise amplified by the metallic roof
was really impressive, but none of the electric/electronic devices has been
destroyed.
The skyscraper where I'm living in UAE is already lightning protection equipped
and apart of the strong lightnings during the "colder" season it is very useful
because we are facing time to time sand storms who induce an important amount
of static.
Have a good day

Jim,

I too would place lightning damage into the "Acts of Nature" category
and not a warranty consideration. A warranty covers premature component
failures and failure to perform to specification, which is different IMHO.
For a comparison example, a new automobile has a warranty period, but if
a tree falls on it and it is damaged, would that be a warranty repair? -
I think not - that is why we have insurance coverage for those kind of
catastrophic events.

Hi folks

I just completed the DSP upgrade board swap. I would just like to say that its
well worth it. The K3 sounds much better and smoother.

The first impression that you get is that the receiver sounds calm and quite.
The harshness and sharp sound has mostly gone. The receiver does not sound
like it has excessive bass, nor does it sound hollow or mushy. The receiver
sounds very much like a very good analog receiver. It actually sounds warm,
rich and very pleasing to the ears.

So for those thinking about it, I would recommend that you do the upgrade.
This upgrade would be especially applicable if you have very good hearing and
notice all these artifacts that many have spoken about..

I have not measured anything, these are just anecdotal observations. Some
people might say that these claims amount to audiophile voodoo, however I am
not a ESSB freak!

Anyhow I am very happy with this voodoo upgrade!

Hi

When the K3 was first released, the noise blanker was very effective on the
Chinese Radar on 40 meters. This radar was very active on the CW end of 40
meters. You could totally eliminate this radar signal with the K3's noise
blanker.

As the firmware was updated, the K3's noise blanker seemed to become less
effective or almost had no effect at all. Anyone else notice this loss in
performance? I wonder if this ability to notch this low band radar was removed
from the K3's noise blanker algorithm?

It could be that the radars pulse repetition rate or pulse width has changed
rendering the noise blanker useless against it.

Anyway when the K3's blanker was working it was outstanding on 160, 80 and 40
meters against this constant QRM source.

I successfully cured my RFI issues when trying to use my NCL-2000 amplifier
last week! The answer was on the Elecraft website:

http://www.elecraft.com/K3/mods/K3_Application_Note_Front_Panel_Microphone_Grounding.pdf

Thanks to Paul W9AC for steering me in that direction. My K3 is #75...all
of the current K3's had that issue taken care of by Elecraft quite some time
ago.

There were 28 check-ins from today's operation with Phillipe being the most
distant station from this QTH at 7424.9 miles!! He was on just a few minutes
before net operations were started. Here are the check-ins:

Re: [Elecraft] 2.1 kHz filter - K3

2010-05-08 Thread Philippe Trottet
In addition to the 2.8 Khz, I'm using the 1.8Khz (starting 2.1) , and also the
1khz (starting 1.6khz) used both in ssb & cw.
Sure with some little alteration of the voice but it is really a must in severe
qrm environment as mine (no directional antenna and a lot of pirates,
fishermens etcvery active on that part of the world.)
One example, on the low part of 20m, specifically on 14.122,3 usb we have
fishermens, Tamoul language, every day and we have the French speaking dx
window for FO, FK on 14.122.
Even those illegal user are sometimes 59+ I'm able to pursue qso's at a 300hz
difference that never happens with my previous rigs. As I say voice is
alterated but readible when playing with the FC and width ~1.5Khz even less.
In that case I'm just increasing my power because I'm sure those fishermens are
using marine rigs and do not have the selectivity of the Elecraft's... and they
qsy most of time.

Maybe I'm missing something???

Doesn't just sliding the K3 knob on so it just kisses the
felt washers do the same thing?

The K3 knob seems plenty heavy to me.

I was thinking though, if extra weight was needed, I would
take it to a local crankshaft shop and have a few slugs of
mallory metal inserted. A slug of mallory metal is only $40.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Expert 1K-FA

2010-04-21 Thread Philippe Trottet
Hi Bob,
I will apologize because I responded to quickly thinking all Hams are
like me...by bad habit.
I will not listed here problems faced with not properly designed ALC's
during the past and as Hams we are suppose to go a bit further to keep
the maximum of our equipment...within the limits.
As the original importer it is your duty to write it and I fully agee
with your comments.
ALC is useful for full auto Amps, specially the solid states one.
During my all career in Telecoms started 1972, I never burned any Amp
(Ham & Broadcast), solid state or valves by overdriving.
But I read carefully the specs before testing any new equipment and
have costly equipment in my pro lab to monitor it, that is not the case
of most of Hams.
So again mea culpa.

Before this faulty opinion proliferates any further; what applies to
tube amps does not follow with solid state amps.

ALC is required by most manufacturers of solid state amps to prevent
overdriving and the resulting damage to the amplifier. ALC is the
mechanism used to achieve this protection.

We were the original USA importer of the Expert 1KFA and it requires
ALC. Tokyo Hy-Power does as well.

Can you manually limit your output from your radio and avoid damage?
Yes. Even so, why take the risk? Hook up the ALC and adjust it according
to the amplifier manufacturer's instruction.

If it is not working correctly, refer the problem to the amplifier
manufacturer or dealer.

So, please do not advise someone with a solid state amp to disconnect
their ALC- unless you want to assume the cost of repairs.

Hi Franco,
Fully agree Arie's comments, I'm not using an auto Amp. only a manual
one with a Russian tetrode, and only checked on the K3 that the time
delay corresponds to the amp specs and that's all.
With my K3-100, most of the time I'm driving it with 12W and the
output
with my amp is ±350W thats cover most of my applications. At 13W it
engage the KPA100 for higher power needs.
Just set the K3 to the power level you want to use without going over
the specs of your equipment.

Forget about the ALC.
Up till now I have never used the ALC between my TRX and PA. No need
to.
Just gently set the power of the trx yourself to drive the PA to the

Hello
I use the Expert 1K-FA with K3 full power and ALC , but i think i
have
two issue.
When i use K3 full power ( with Expert full power ) the rig output is
not stable but fluctuates around 15 watt and more or less of 5 watt ,
and of course the output of Expert varies consequently .
When i use Expert half power i have not issue , the input and output
power are stable.
Another issue is that when i put the Expert in STBY , the K3 output
power does not return instantly at 100 w , but slowly in 3 - 4
seconds.
When i not use the ALC i have not issue.
Thank you

with fine tip. Do not forget the wrist strap w/1Megohm resitor.
Just follow step by step,10 pages, the installation procedure.

Can feel the difference in my Sony MDR 7505 headsets, the listening is less
aggressive to the ears on cw & ssb weak signals in a noisy environment like
mine, industrial area, making some improvment on weak signals.

Thanks to Elecraft for that useful add-up.

Just saw that Elecraft is now offering a DIY kit to upgrade your current DSP
board with the LPF module. This is a good option as the current exchange
program is taking waaay too long. I was on the list to receive an upgraded
board since early December and still nothing. I finally decided to take
myself off the list, and I think I'll pursue the DIY option instead.

Anyway, just going over the instructions and I'm curious as to how you guys
that have done this mod have gone about cutting the two traces? Would an
exacto knife work?

I just wanted to post a follow-up message on this thread. I just
acquired a
CM500 headset - they seem to perform quite well but they can hardly be
considered a high isolation headphone. The isolation is about the same
as
the Heil ProSet but falls far short of the Sennheiser HD280. The
CM500
isn't really suitable if you follow the K3NA approach toward
maximizing
dynamic range with AGC off. On the other hand, the CM500 seems quite
good
indeed for normal operation with AGC on and the microphone gets great
audio
reports.

your K3 will need to have the KXV3 or KXV3a for IF output. Its not
included with the P3 since most K3s already have added it.

I/Q is not available as an output. That would seriously delay the P3
release and add to our cost. Its not a trivial add since its only
derived internally in the DSPPIC that drives the P3. We may be able to
add it as a future option. Stay tuned!

Spectrograms, such as "waterfalls," make use of your eye-brain system to help
find signals that are below the noise level, especially when signals are
drifting and don't allow temporal averaging methods.

You can see an example of its use (1971) here:

http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/19730010095_1973010095.pdf

Fig 11-7 on page 130 (although poorly reproduced in the PDF scan) and the text
on that page explains its use for discovering very, very weak and very, very DX
signals.

In the amateur world, the first use of waterfalls was by Skip KH6TY in his
Digipan program, I believe. Without Digipan and the ease of "waterfall
tuning," PSK31 probably would not have become as popular as it is today.

With the addition of some special filtering, you can make a waterfall see even
deeper into the noise when the signal is not drifting. The two figures here

http://homepage.mac.com/chen/w7ay/cocoaModem/UsersManual/mfskManual/mfskManual/dominoex.html#weak

show the same weak DominoEX signal with 18 FSK carriers. The top figure is
what the weak signal looks like in a simple waterfall, and the figure at the
bottom, with the same input SNR, takes advantage of a signal that is not
drifting, as explained in the accompanying text.

In the digital world, you can't work them unless you can *see* them :-).

A good waterfall display will also show a CW signal that you can't hear, and
can make "zero beating" a virtually instantaneous effort. Or zero beating to a
synchronous AM carrier, etc etc.

least a 500Khz bandwidth range in 14 languages, while offering Windoze and

Re: [Elecraft] K3 & Competition

2010-02-14 Thread Philippe Trottet
Dear Bob,
Welcome to the club
I answered you outside the Elecraft list about my mic settings and small trick
learn when joined the Army in the early seventies.
We are all surprised at the starting point because we have do to our own setup
as the majority of parameters are adjustable and compare to other "limousine"
rigs, the K3 is a "Nascar" rig where you must always adjust to get it best on
any situation like on a race track where you can go beyond the limit if needed
and this waked up my Ham spirit after decades using rigs where everything is on
a plate...plug and play, no fun !

You joke about catching up with the K2. The Kenwood TS830s is a 30 year old
radio that has performance thats better than the K2 in many areas. It is
the case of the K2 catching up with the 30 year old TS830S!

The TS-830S was/is a fine radio. It is a prime example of the error of
adding general coverage to HF rigs. It was ham band only, and better then
80% of the current rigs.

Receiver performance has gone down hill, just to add general coverage and a
zillion buttons. Not the case with my old Ten-Tec Corsair or the Omni-V. I
had a Paragon for a while, and it was ok, but not up to the ham band only
rigs.

What Elecraft did with the K2, is design a Ham HF rig for top performance on
our bands. Single conversion like my old Corsair, that works very well.

I hesitated to sell the Corsair and the Omni-V, as they are first class CW
rigs, but the K3 is incredible. I don't miss them at all, other then for
sentimental reasons. I needed K3 money, and they got sold.

No matter what the future holds, we can thank Elecraft for putting a fire
under those Japanese butts.

Some of us want performance. Where they still don't get it, is they will
continue to produce performance by price point.

If you want top performance, you will also pay for buttons, knobs, and HD
LCD screens, and pay top dollar.

Yes, they can design radios that perform, but they won't perform until you
pay $6000+.

I have had my new K3 online for 12 days. It now has an LP-Pan, HRD,
PowerSDR, and CW skimmer configured, and there is nothing for any price that
can perform better. Maybe an IC-7800 doesn't need all the interface boxes
and wires, but I like this setup, and it was 1/4 the price.

I am so impressed with this setup, that I doubt I will even think about a
new rig for a long, long time. I still like the Mark-V, but I have a feeling
that it may be gone soon, as I get used to the K2 ergonomics. But the Mark-V
is a good SWL radio. :>)

For now, I am finishing setup, and I am just going to work stations. A lot
of stations, with a big smile on my face.

73 - Bob

In a related incident, another ham-radio enthusiast, Hezekiah Bambershoot,
of Ft Jackson, was arrested at police headquarters for disorderly conduct
and assaulting a police officer. Bambershoot initially came to
headquarters reporting he had been victimized buying a radio from a mysterious
Californian named Ellie Craft.

Ms Craft allegedly took advantage of Bambershoot by claiming to have
down-conversion which he mistook for a syndrome of the same name. Bambershoot
was happy with his purchase until his friends told him how foolish he had
been.

According to Police spokesman, Ken Wood, "The poor man was distraught and
raving about roofing filters. What the heck are they?" The arrest report
filed by fellow-ham and officer, Ike Com, listed Bambershoot's original
complaint as "radio mushiness" but notes, "I told him all my radios sound
mushy but he was upset he couldn't hear it on his. When we tried to calm him
down he became unruly."

Su Yae, an EMT called to the scene, defended Bambershoot saying, "When I
got there he was on the floor repeating 'A, G, C, Slope, Pre and A T T' over
and over. He was babbling. They claimed he was clicking his heels but I
didn't hear anything. The poor man was just frustrated because his
purchase had so many faults he couldn't find. I feel sorry for him."

Bambershoot is being held on $10,000 bond. Police are still searching for
the elusive Ellie Craft.

MAN HOSPITALIZED WITH ANXIETY OVER HAM RADIO

Southland County Morning News

Southland -- A ham radio enthusiast was admitted to County Hospital today
suffering from anxiety over what he perceived as serious problems with his
new radio, authorities reported Tuesday.

Irv Stumpo, 55, of East Pharsalia, checked into the emergency room "in
distress," according to the nurse on watch just before midnight Tuesday. "He
was perspiring profusely and moaning over and over, 'My K-3 is no good, no
good'," said Paula Stevens, a nurse at County. "He had enormous headphones
clamped tightly on his head which we had a ton of difficulty removing, and
he was also wearing ear buds," she said. "Isn't that strange? He was half
incoherent but kept mumbling something about dynamic range and audio
artifacts. I have no idea what that means."

Randy LaHood, a fifteen year emergency room veteran, said that during an
examination Mr. Stumpo went into considerable technical detail about a radio
he had recently purchased from Elecraft, a company that makes high-end ham
radios. "He began by explaining that his radio had 'noisy receiver' and
'mushy signals'," explained Dr. LaHood. "From what I could gather, he had
just spent a lot of money on a radio and hadn't actually noticed any of these
problems himself, but others in a internet group kept putting the ideas
into his head," he said. Over a course of weeks, Stumpo became distraught over
various imperfections in what Dr. LaHood said was a classic case of the
power of suggestion.

The hospital records also said that Stumpo drew mathematical figures he
labeled "AGC slope", and filled four pages by writing "AGC off", "Ear
Isolation" and "K3" repeatedly. Hospital officials could not explain the
cryptic
scribblings.

Dr. LaHood said that Stumpo repeated the phrase "mushy AGC" for at least
four hours while he waited for treatment. Other patients who were in the
waiting room at the time moved to the other side of the room for fear he might
endanger them. J. B. Archer was one of those in the waiting room at the
time who had brought in his twelve-year-old son with a basketball injury.

'the impedance of my headphones' and 'ride the R. F. gain'. Then he started
with 'diversity problem' and I thought maybe he was having trouble with
racial relations. He was in terrible shape, I'll tell you that."

Rick Culver, president of a local ham radio club, told the Morning News in
a telephone interview, "A lot of these guys spend five or ten thousand
dollars on a radio they think is going to be absolutely perfect in every
conceiveable way. When it's not, they go into a panic buying lots of other
accessories which promise to fix the issue they think they're having. This is
followed by a deep buyer's remorse." He went on to recount a recent case which
epitomized this effect. "We had one guy who had a radio that put out 95
watts instead of 100. He went berserk and ended up smashing his radio with a

Fully agree !
Race cars need fine (and often) tuning to get their best for each races, K3's
are the same.
But my main main thing is to enjoy and have a lot of fun to chase the weak
signal, specially in big pilups in SSB with my exotic callsign. Using for ssb
FC: 0.95 and Width: 1.6k (6k, 2.8 & 1.8k filter installed) AGC mainly OFF in
that case and do not attempt I will respond first to the biggest signal.
Use the N1EU AGC settings http://n1eu.com/ with good results.
Personal rule: ssb=qro if needed but cw, exclusively qrp max 5w or qrpp.
MIC= MH2 and SONY MDR 7505 Headset, Keys: Vibroplex + straight key Siemens
Baumuster T1, both connected.

Well said!

I'm just glad I bought my K3 before I got too involved in some of the
discussion on here. If I hadn't I might not have done it and then I would be
missing out on this wonderful radio.

To paraphrase what some others have said: "This one is a keeper and I am taking

Interesting reading. I'm surprised none of these contesters got the memo
about how big guns would never buy a K3 because it didn't have 200W or 1,000
knobs on the front panel. I guess they haven't used the K3 enough to see the
inherent flaws...

Hi,

Does anyone know how to get rid of the website frames?

The order page will not show the complete page of options so I cannot
order a new K3 as I am using a Blackberry only.

No other internet access available.

I had it once before but it appears to be gone. I think the menu on the
left of the home page had an option "No Frames" but I cannot display
that if it still there.

K3 beta-test firmware revision 3.76 (with DSP rev. 2.52) is now
available.

This revision has something for just about everyone, but especially
those who use NR (noise reduction), and those who have (or will soon
have) a K144XV 2-meter module. See release notes below.

Please send any questions to k3supp...@elecraft.com. For instructions

on how to load beta firmware, see:

  http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

73,
Wayne
N6KR

* * *

MCU 3.76 / DSP 2.52, 1-23-2010

Changes related to K144XV, transverters, FM, and repeaters:

* REPEATER REVerse: If a repeater offset is in use (+/-),
holding REV switches VFO A to the repeater's input frequency.

* RF POWER BARGRAPH: Now shows *tenths of a milliwatt* when
using low-level transverter I/O (applies to both the K144XV and
external transverters). 10 bars = about 1.00 mW at the IF. This
corresponds to about 10 W output when using the K144XV.

* COARSE TUNING WITH XVTR OFFSETS: Fixed problem with
VFO display when using COARSE tuning steps in combination
with a non-zero transverter frequency offset (CONFIG:XVn OFS).

* IMPROVED FM RECEIVE: FM demodulation algorithm
refined to reduce signal distortion.

* FM SQUELCH: No longer opens briefly during memory recall.

* "ANT3" REMINDER WHEN K144XV SELECTED: If you switch
to a band configured for use with the Elecraft K144XV internal 2-m
module, “ANT3” is flashed to remind you to use the separate
BNC antenna jack provided on the fan panel, rather than ANT1/2.

Other new features and improvements:

* NR (NOISE REDUCTION) ON/OFF: This is now saved
on a per-band/per-receiver basis (same as NB). NR ADJ
(noise reduction setting) is stored independently for each mode.

* TX MESSAGE MEMORY ERASE: To completely erase a
transmit message buffer, tap REC, then M1-M4, then CLR.
Note that erasing a CW/DATA memory will not erase a DVR
Message assigned to the same M1-M4 switch, and vice-versa.

* ERR PTT & ERR KEY (rig keyed at power-up): These error
conditions no longer lock out the POWER switch.

* DELAYED MEMORY RECALL (M>V): In CONFIG:MEM 0-9,
tap '1' to select "M>V NOR" or "M>V DLY". NOR is the default,
resulting in “live” memory recall as you rotate VFO A. In the
"DLY"
case, the receiver is not updated until you tap M>V a second
time to exit memory recall. You may prefer “DLY” if you have
external gear that switches as the K3 changes bands.

* 40-M TX RANGE EXTENDED TO 7.650 MHz (12 W MAX): TX
near the first I.F. has always been disabled from 7.550 to 8.990
MHz to protect the 8.21 MHz trap on the KAT3 or KANT3 module.
At power settings of 12 W or lower, the upper limit is now 7.650
MHz, allowing use of some additional MARS channels.

Remote Control Command Changes:

* XF/XF$ COMMAND ADDED: Returns crystal filter number (1-5)
presently selected for main (XF) and sub receiver (XF$). GET only.
Not usable during BSET or REVerse.

* SQUELCH STATUS ADDED TO IC COMMAND: Byte e,
bits 4 (main RX) and 3 (sub RX). 1 = squelched. (Works for both
FM and non-FM squelch.)

* SUB RX NR STATUS ADDED TO IC COMMAND: Byte e, bit 2.

E
EINIT (EEPROM Initialization) Changes:

- PL deviation (FM) set to 0.36 kHz (was 0.00)
- Power output set to 5/50 W (was 0)
- CONFIG:SPLT SV set to YES
- RTTY mark tone set to 2125 Hz (was 1275)

2010-01-12 Thread Philippe Trottet
Hi Bill,
Just do a test, it is so easy to modify with the Elecraft utility.
In my severe environment, I've noticed a slight difference at 2.1 when using
the 2.8 or the 1.8, so I decided to use the 2.1 with the 1.8 it's more sharp
but it is my own pereception and others can have different feeling on it.

You bring up the interesting question of configuration for the narrow
filter -- i.e., where do you set it to "kick in"? I opted for 1.9 kHz, you
opted for 2.1 kHz. I'm curious as to where others have configured the 1.8
kHz SSB filter to kick in -- and why.

2010-01-09 Thread Philippe Trottet
Hi Gang,
I fully agree with Hector's comments, we have to know what we want ?
It has been explained many times in the reflector what was the Elecraft
politics, easy to carry rig for dxpeditions or field days with great
performance etc.etc...
By Hams, for Hams, that's the Ham spirit who has been a little bit
forgetted since we are using those "limousine" rigs where most functions
are automated and not let the user to go beyond the limit if they want
to.
The design looks not like those pretty rigs, so what !
After testing on lab most of the commercial and Hams rigs on the market
for years my only regret was not to order a K3 earlier, thanks to John
ON4UN, who convinced me !
As a exclusive wire antenna user, what a great help for chasing the
weak signal especially in a industrial environment as mine.
In cw it is a great performer and in ssb it's not bad too with the 2.8
+ 1,8 khz 8 poles filters where you can discriminated easily a weaker
signal in a overloaded environment.
The Electraft team are taking care of the comments of the users to
improve day after day their products, what can be expected more for us ?

I'm just a little bit anxious about the continuity of Elecraft company
when Wayne and Eric will be retired but no doubt they will find somebody
in the pure Ham spirit as they are.

Hi Randy, nothing more away from the actual reality what your friend
said.
He is obviously not updated with what is going on in the contesting and
dxing world of hamradio lately,IF he were then he sure will know that
precisely the "Big guns" as he call the major dxers on the world are all
selling their big FT-1000D,FT-1000MK5,FT-2000D,.etc to buy K3's.Wy?
because they all have realized that the K3 is a better performance radio
than those mentioned before.I even know two guys here in my county who
after owning for a year the IC-7700 and IC-7800 top guns from Icoms are
selling them to buy K3's.
I am not a heavy contester neither dxer but I use my K3 day by day,I
will say 365 days a year and its not an ugly radio, certainly is not
beautiful as a FT-2000 but guess what, I owned a FT-2000 and it lasted
here in my shack just 2 months because it did not passed the comparison
test againts my K3,neither the ProIII that I owned before, neither many
radios that has passed by here.
I will ask your friend If he could pull a weak station with a signal of
55 on 40M having at just 2Khz below another station with 20db
over, surely he will lose the weak one using those "big" radios, that
don't happen in a K3 where using a roofer of 1.8Khz and moving the shift
down 50Hz the QRM will totally disapear, that is something you can't do
with any of those big radios, that is why all contesters are switching to
this small size radio that is also very portable and light enough to
carry it to anywhere on this planet.
Ask your friend why last year at the Ducie island VP6DX all the radios
were K3's,they did not take any of the big radios for sure, not even
one, only back up radios they took were the K2's.
The K3 has probed to be the highest performance radio in the market and

Randy,

That is one man's opinion, and it is not shared by all. The K3
ergonomics went through a sizable focus group before final decisions on

such matters were made. Yes, that group was heavily influenced by
contesting types and DX types, and they seem to be the groups that will

purchase whatever will give them an edge on the competition. Your
opinions may differ, but the portability aspects for DXpeditions along

with the high performance receiver has gone a long way - it sold over
3000 K3s in under 3 years. There is something to be said about that
fact despite what some would call "shortcomings" such as a small front

panel. The K2 received similar criticism over its 10 years, but folks

are still buying them.
It is difficult to please all with one design. Each to his own - you
will have to weigh the pros and cons of each when reaching your own
decision. There are transceivers out there with

Hello friends:
I am Ruben from Spain.
Around 10 months ago i owned a K3/100 with ATU and original 2.7
filter.
I tested it around 2 months and after that i sold it.
At that moment i didn't like its audio (very crispy for me) and
selectivity with 2.7 filter wasn't better than my old 756pro2.
Now i am thinking buy again one K3, but this time with better filters
and voice keyer.
I my options is also an IC-7600.
I think this question has been done lots of times in this list, but
excuse me, i have to ask...
What do you think?
Is audio better in last units?
With better filters... A lot better selectivity?
Your coments are very helper for my choice.
Has anybody tested a k3 and 7600 at same time?

Thank's a lot friends and happy 2010.

He may not have access to tech support from the Japanese distributor,

Just installed the 6K filter and used the K3 utility.
Can hear the difference on AM mode but, when pressed on XFIL it indicates

I missed something in the configuration ?

Re: [Elecraft] Filters for K3?

2009-12-27 Thread Philippe Trottet
Dear Martin,
I've ordered some days ago... and received yesterday the 6Khz for AM & ESSB and
the 1.8K for SSB. So I installed them yesterday evening.
Considering my antenna, delta loop for 40m and the huge signals received for
the ex-USSR side, 59+30 & up is common, the 1.8k in addition to the 2.8k is
really helpful and I like the fact when moving the width knob it goes
automatically from one filter to another. Just an example from yesterday as I
made rx tests after installing the 1.8K, 2 x UA big guns were on 7.085 and
7.090 respectively and polluted the spectrum with very bad tuned amps with lot
of splatters. With the K3 and the 8 pole filters I was able to distinguish and
follow a qso on 7.088 performed by 2 M0 Hams. The shift was reduced on 1.00
and the bandwidth 1.6~1.7 with the 1.8K activated. Using the AFX for audio was
also helpful.
Considering my cw traffic, the 400Hz is perfect for general purpose.

My actual config, all 8 poles filters

I am a ragchewer as well as a contester, ssb & cw. Rarely data modes.
I do weak signal work on 160/80 cw.
I have
2.8khz ssb in main & sub
400hz cw in main & sub
Should i order the 200hz 5-pole filter for their narrower bandwith or
the 250hz 8-pole with steeper skirts? Add 2.1khz or 1.8khz for ssb?
What is your recommendation?
Should i add filters for both rx's (-> diversity) ?
If i go for the 5-pole filters, should they be matched by elecraft or is
there a method to tweak it in the K3 ?

Hi all,

As you probably know, we keep a list of firmware features and
improvements to be added as time permits. Many of the most-requested
changes were made over the past several months, keeping pace with the
demands of the fall/winter contest season. (A few that come to mind:
switch sequence automation via macros, improved DVR interaction with
PTT, main/sub audio mixing, improved NR, lockable transmit controls,
and many enhanced remote-control commands.)

As we head into 2010, we'd like to refresh the master firmware list
based on your input. Items already on the list have priority, of
course, but this is a great opportunity to let us know what else is
missing or could be improved. Our goal is to make the K3 as easy to
use as possible, while providing the advanced features you need for
specific operating situations.

We're also planning a renewed effort to assist application software
developers. If your ideas for improvements involve changes to both K3
firmware and a favorite application, we'll pass it along to the
developers and work with them closely.

We're making great progress on the P3 Panadapter and other new
products. There will be some surprises in 2010 :)

Dear Bryan,
As you say, you're not playing with the settings of the K3, you really
must try !
K3 is a "Piston Cup" winner car compared to a standard limousine.
You have the full choice to adapt all parameters to your own perception
and frankly speaking as I have been owner or tester for most of the
modern Ham and professional rigs, Elecraft waked up my Ham spirit after
years of Ham radio routine with general purpose trcvr's. This is Ham
product, by Hams and for Hams...what else !
They improved the rx side to the limit we can obtain today and I'm
quite sure they will go further, following the improvement of
technology.
Hpe to c u sn as propag with ZL is increasing yet.
Note: I'm refusing to play with rotating antennas, too easy, no fun,
only wires are used on my side for years, same thing with cw, no
interest at all to play with a computer where you've just to press
Functions keys.
Vibroplex for normal use and hand key for contest that's real Ham sport

I would be interested to know how you arrive at that conclusion.

My perception is a LOT of people have posted genuine concerns about
noisy K3 receiver.

I will add my voice to those that find the K3 noisy receiver very
disturbing.
I am a casual user I rarely diddle with settings beyond the factory
defaults. This is true for the several other late model rigs of
different makes I own and operate.
I find the K3 very noisy and fatiguing in comparison to any of the
other rigs I have when tuning around a relatively quite band. I Rarely
use the preamp mostly have the attenuator in.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Latest Beta update

2009-12-11 Thread Philippe Trottet
Hi Terry,
It works with mine.
When AGC OFF if you have a huge sig, i.e 59+ it block and you can't hear it any
more, only see the bargraph. You need to use the RF knob and adjust in order to
hear it agn.

Sorry I have `missed the boat` on this thread.
I use my K3 most of the time with AGC Off as I find this offers best
weak signal performance. The AF protection, if I understand its function
correctly, does not seem to be operating on my receiver with AGC off
despite the software update ... ?

Knobs here are ok, as with Julian, I too built my K3 and was careful
about the fitting.
0.050 Allen key came with knobs in kit, so Elecraft should be able to
supply one to you.

There are over 3000 K3s out there now and relatively very few have
reported a problem with the knobs. I believe Elecraft reported an
issue with the knobs on this reflector some weeks ago and said this
had been addressed. Perhaps you unfortunately had knobs from a bad
batch - twice!

Delivery from Elecraft to UK for small parts has typically been 2 - 3
weeks here. Very surprised it's taken longer for you.

Sorry your experience has not been of the highest quality, I
personally have found their service to be excellent, a number of my
club friends have also found this, which is one of the reasons I
purchased my K3.

Mode components in the UK (http://www.modecomponents.co.uk/Kits.htm)
are now selling small Elecraft kits into Europe. Perhaps they could
carry a few spares and therefore delivery might be faster.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Yaesu

2009-11-23 Thread Philippe Trottet
Hi
I do not think Elecraft as a bad image in France. I saw on the net some
complains because i'm quite sure they made some mistakes when doing
their kits but most of them did not, and French Electrafters Hams are
growing day after day.
We know for who the Elecraft product are made, it is like an F1 compare
to a conventional car, the F1 is always under development to take the
best to it, conventional car you bought it and you're using it until you
will sold it for second hand. Elecraft woke up the Ham spirit after
years of passiveness, major Hams provider do not, only play with their
last...and expensive toys.

Hi Gary

I cant answer all the questions the brochure has limited information.
Its interesting reading, go download it.

The K3 in Europe has PR image problem, thats why radios like the
terrible FT2000 is outselling it probably 100:1, even with its crap
receiver. I would think that this new radio is going to put Yaesu back
onto the ham radio map.

Yup Yaesus line up of transceivers is terrible at the moment and I
would not touch one with a 1000 foot long pole. However Yaesu has played
it hand well with this new radio. I would suggest that this radio in
sales numbers is going to be bigger than the FT1000D and FT100MP
series of radios. It will hurt K3 and Ten Tec Orion sales, especially
the Orion which is considered to be a dead duck in the water with no
further improvements.

I wonder if Elecraft will take up the challenge? New front panel, 200
watts and inbuilt P3? Its going to be a very interesting new Year.
There is even rumor around in Japan that Kenwood is coming up with a
similar concept with a new Kenwood super radio with a 9mhz IF and DSP.
Some say its combination of the TS950SDX and the TS870S in a new radio.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Yaesu copies K3's design

2009-11-22 Thread Philippe Trottet
Hi,
It makes me remember when Honda came to Motorbike competition in the sixties
with a copy of British engine design, but with better steels... and win the
Championship.
Certainly Yaesu engineers bought K3's and worked on it but I do not think they
can compete with the Elecraft prices.
Considering the size of the Yaesu company, they have huge sunk costs and
payroll...unless they will open factories in China, taking the risk to destroy
their image.

The K3 will be getting a serious run for its money in the next few months.
Yaesu looks like it has done some serious competition analysis.

Features...

9 mhz IF
Not up conversion
Narrow roofing filters
99 db 3rd dynamic range +25dbm 3rd order intercept point @ 1khz
200 watts, 75 Class A
300 hz roofing filter.
MP and FT5KD version
Bandscope and many other features

It looks like Yaesu have taken the K3's performance ideals and put it
into a bigger box. The brochure is on the yahoo groups web page for those
interested.

This radio is going to be very popular because it seems that a lot of the
criticism of the K3's apparent failings seem to have been corrected in the
new Yaesu FT5K design

All very interesting

The KUSB is just a USB to RS-232. They nailed me for $40 for one
because I
thought it was a special one for the K3. It didn't work. I later found
one
for under $10 that works fine. Don't buy it.

Elecraft have some wonderful products and accessories. The KUSB just

Bon jour Phillipe,

The simple answer is "Always follow the manufacturer's directions". A
more
complex one is that the K3, being a DSP rig, compensates internally in
firmware for the fact that PREamp is ON during the calibration
procedure.

I also recommend using CONFIG: SMTR MD - ABS. This will place the
K3's
S-meter in ABSolute mode, so that the S-meter always reads the signal
being
applied to the input terminals correctly, independently of whether PRE
or
ATT are selected internally. This is also different than most rigs
but, if
you think about it, it is better since the S-meter always read the
true
signal level at the input terminal, before any gain or attenuation is
applied inside.

I believe 6 dB is the "correct" definition, but most S-meters (K3 and Flex
5k excluded) are very non-linear at low S-meter readings. IMHO the
following is an accurate summary of what readings should be:

http://www.n6rk.com/S_unit_definitions.doc

I would adjust the K3 for the XG2's 1 uV output to solidly display S3 (i.e.
no flicker of S2-3). That would only be 2.16 dB off (20 log .78/1), which
is probably "close enough".

Hi Kevin,
I'm a brand new one Elecrafter and received my K3 last Tuesday.
Only Elecraft company knows where K rigs have been solded to world wide
Hams.
Am I the only Elecrafter in UAE ? I hope not Hi !
I will check tomorrow at the Emirates Amateur Radio Society (A62ER)
and will send a request on their website.

You've just learned me was an Elecraft net originating from Iraq, is it
still active ?
The Elecraft net is also an useful tool to discover other Elecrafters
if they are enrolled on it.
Hope to contact you as well

There was an Elecraft Net originating from Iraq at one point. You may
wish to inquire about that or simply start your own.

2009-11-15 Thread Philippe Trottet
Dears,
I would like to participate but considering the propagation between USA
and UAE the schedule is not adapted.

Any possibilty for an Elecrafter net by IARU zones ? i.e. the
International Emergency Network directed and monitored on 20m once a
month by the National French Amateur Federation serving the Civil
Defense (FNRASEC) Call: F8RSF
