Re: [Elecraft] K3 for CW
Hmmm. To me a 1000 filter is a waste of a slot. Make it 1.8 and it is a big help in the occasional SSB contest. I wonder if I need the 400 hz in my sub. I only use the sub in a split operation and like to set my DSP up to 600-800 so I can hear more of the pile in my right ear. -Robby #3804 From: dj3cq [via Elecraft] [mailto:ml-node+s365791n7558706...@n2.nabble.com] Sent: Friday, July 06, 2012 3:06 AM To: Robby.VY2SS Subject: Re: K3 for CW 1st K3 (#2812) 2800 1000 400 250 No Sub 2nd (#6119) 2700 1000 400 250 Sub: 2700 400 99% contest or DXpedition use, rarely any ragchewing. Re: [Elecraft] K3 for CW
I had the same dilemma. I went for the 250 and 500 for the reason you mentioned. I normally listen at 350 hz but 250 in contests. If you are mostly interested in CW why bother with the DVR? The 2nd RX is very nice but I find that I seldom use it after the first few months. I don’t think you need to match them. I have a 400 hz filter in my sub RX and have had good success with diversity etc. Just my 2 cents worth. 73, -Robby VY2SS From: Don KB1YBG [via Elecraft] [mailto:ml-node+s365791n7558622...@n2.nabble.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 04, 2012 8:37 PM To: Robby.VY2SS Subject: K3 for CW I'm about to place order for k3 kit. Re: [Elecraft] Rev 4.51 firmware - what AGC settings worked on big pile-ups with loud AND weak signals in the WPX?
I had limited time available for the WPX and operated as VF2A. I loaded v4.51 beta before the contest to try it out. I tried the settings mentioned above before the contest. I cannot imagine using them. I cannot imagine spending the entire contest with my hand on the gain controls to prevent serious ear damage. I run my RF gain wide open. Always. I finally changed my settings to the defaults in my owners manual. I contested with both hands on the keyboard. I worked the weak stations with no difficulty and the strong ones with no pain. I do not expect every improvement to be useful to me. Everyone configures and uses their K3 differently. I am very impressed that Elecraft is able (and willing) to keep improving our equipment. Re: [Elecraft] RCS-12 or Station Master for K3?
I have been using the Elecraft KRC2 for remote switching for several years. It drives a MicroHAM 10 port switch. The switch is well made in a heavy casting and can be used in the shack or on your tower. I have never had the slightest problem with it. I built the KRC2 as a kit (easy) and the only problem came after a minor lightning event which prevented me from communicating with the KRC2 proccessor to upgrade the S/W. Elecraft responded immediately with a new chip with the latest software already installed. The cable interface with the switch box allows one or more bands to use a single antenna. I am an avid contester and it is great to have one less thing to remember on a band change. 73, -Robby VY2SS -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/RCS-12-or-Station-Master-for-K3-tp7556171p7556199.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Noise from compressor
Riddle me this! I have strong interferance since installing an air source heat pump. It is most annoying on 20M. It is also present on 40M and 15M. My 40M antenna is twice as far from the compressor and the noise on that band is reduced. On 20M is is S3-4. It used to be S1. Here is what I have done in trying to eliminate this problem: 1. I removed the 220VAC from the compressor at the breaker panel. The noise is gone. 2. I turned the breaker back on and put my indoor units on fan only. The noise is gone. I guess this proves the noise is coming from the compressor. Also when I turn my beam toward the compressor the noise increases. 3. I disconnected my power supply and connected the K3 to a battery. The noise is gone so It is not coming in on the house AC circuit. 4. I disonnected the antenna at the K3. The noise is gone so it seems it was coming from the antenna. 5. I reconnect the antenna and turn the RF gain to zero. The noise is gone from the speaker but on the waterfall it is NOT gone. I am hearing a buzz in the speaker or headphones and can see many vertical lines on the P3 waterfall. The wider my bandwidth setting the more noticable problem but the lines are there for the entire width of the P3 scan. Maybe 40 lines on P3 display with a 5 khz scan width. I have tried placing 3 capacitors across the 220VAC terminals where it connects to the compressor. LG, LN, NG with no measureable results. I would be very happy if someone can shed a little light on this. 73, -Robby VY2SS So the noise is present in the IF -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Noise-from-compressor-tp7513403.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Spot button QSYs K3
I spent some more time with this and find that if I tune to the low side (tone lower than my pitch setting) and push spot it tunes the way it should but if I turn the dial to hear a higher note than my 680 hz pitch setting the VFO takes off down the band. It will sail right past S9 signals without stopping. I have 250 and 500 hz filters installed (both 8 pole) and my DSP width set at 350 where I normally have it. I am using version 4.39 as previously mentioned. My sub RX is off. I don't like turning the P3 off because it's like going blind but doing so has no effect on the problem. Pressing TEXT DEC I have AUTO OFF and Threshold set to 1. Setting it to a higher value does not give me a relialbe tuning bar. VFO CRS is set to 0.1 VFO CTS is set to 400 VFO FST is set to 50 VFO IND is set to NO VFO OFS is set to ON Pitch is set to 680 but other settings have produced similar results. I don't always use SPOT as the P3 allows me to tune just as accurately and I am usually already looking at it. Re: [Elecraft] need some roofing filter advice?
Hi Chuck, I was faced with the same questions last winter when I added the second RX. There was some concern that diversity reception would suffer if the two recievers were not filtered exactly the same. Since I considered diversity reception to be a bit of a gimmick I went with just two filters. The 2.7 5-pole that is included and an 8-pole 400hz filter. My main RX has 2.7, 1.8, 500 and 250 filters, all 8 pole except the 2.7. A few months later I discovered that I had been wrong about diversity reception. It is actually amazing and it works great with my filter combination. If you are working CW DX, you will be listening on the subRX and I find it useful to open the subRX up as much as 600 or 700 hz on some pileups so I hear more in the right ear and the narrow filter on the DX in my left ear. Team that up with the P3 and you are gonna be happy. I got my 8-pole 500hz filter directly from INRad. 73, -Robby VY2SS -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/need-some-roofing-filter-advice-tp6581353p6594618.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] subrx and filters
Juha, I have 2.7, 1.8, 500 and 250 in my main RX. In the subRX I have 2.7 and 400hz. DSP is usually 200 to 350 hz. Diversity works fine. Re: [Elecraft] New to Me P3 Benefit
I have also found that my SP productivity has improved dramatically using the P3 both on CW and RTTY. It's a big advantage when tuning up or down the band to be able to see what is happening ahead of you. On RTTY I will usually line up the marker on the next signal and jump to it with the tap=QSY on the P3. I use the 5 kz span without the waterfall. With a little practice, no manual fine tuning is necessary. I seldom have to touch the main VFO on the K3 while I SP in that mode. I wish I could do that with a mouse (hint). On CW the P3 together with the second RX allows me to find and ID stations before I get to them. It has always cost me points in contests because I am lazy and prefer to RUN but now I'm getting much better rates from SP and that encourages me to do it more. When I'm looking for a RUN frequency, if there is one, the P3 helps me find it. My eyes are on the P3 almost all the time when I'm operating. 73, -Robby VY2SS -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/New-to-Me-P3-Benefit-tp6092963p6094416.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [k3] Audio distortion on strong CW signals - after a while
I noticed this for the first time in the 160M contest last night. It almost sounds like aurora or a faulty relay at the transmit station. I switch to the RX ant and everything was fine. I used my beverage a lot even to the USA because of this. I found that when I had a chance to reboot the K3 the problem was gone for a while. Could it be one of those COR gadgets reacting to the huge signals in the contest. 73, -Robby VY2SS -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/k3-Audio-distortion-on-strong-CW-signals-after-a-while-tp5952957p5972734.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KAT3 Automatic Antenna Tuner
Can someone tell me how to make the automatic antenna tuner tune automatically? Mine only acts as a memory tuner and I have to push the ATU Tune button to make it tune. -Robby VY2SS -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/KAT3-Automatic-Antenna-Tuner-tp4790259p4790259.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KAT3 Automatic Antenna Tuner
Thanks for the fast reply Don. Actually, I did expect it to automatically retune when it finds an SWR higher than some specified amount. That is how every internal tuner I have every used worked. Thats how my backup radio works and its a good thing I have it as I have had quite a bit of down time waiting for new KAT3 boards. Elecraft support is very good about sending them out but it takes 2 weeks to get to me. Unfortunately, although I suspected something was amiss, it was not until recently that I discovered it was not really automatic (by my definition). I agree that a normal person might have keyed in on it sooner. Since 99% of my operating is in contests, I am not used to spending a lot of time pondering various settings on my rig before each transmission. The more set and forget the better I like it. The problem with automatic selection of memorized settings is it stops being useful when you change to an antenna that has different charactaristics. Or you turn on an amplifier that presents a different load than your antenna. In these cases your memory settings are all working against you. If I always used the same set of antennas and always did or did not use an amplifier I would not be having these problems. At least now I know that to be safe I need to press that button before every transmission after an antenna or power level change. I have a hard time accepting that as automatic but it may well depend on an individual's definition of the word. I would prefer to have my tuner ensure that my finals are not seeing a high SWR. (K4... and K8.. please do not flame me. You know who you are.) 73, -Robby VY2SS -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/KAT3-Automatic-Antenna-Tuner-tp4790259p4791058.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KAT3 Automatic Antenna Tuner
Don, That sounds like a useful suggestion. At least it did unitil I thought about it a while. Connecting the input of the amp to port 2 is easy but what do I do with the output. Antenna port 1 is already connected to my antenna switchs. What do I do with the output from the amp? I could maybe connect both ports 1 and 2 to the amp input and the amp output to the switch since only one at a time is active but what happens when the port in use is sending 100W back into the unused port? That scares me a little. Elecraft support have kindly sent me a KANT board so the other solution would be a third party 1KW external tuner. I am not in love with this idea. -Robby -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/KAT3-Automatic-Antenna-Tuner-tp4790259p4791293.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KAT3 Automatic Antenna Tuner
Hi Monty, That sounds like a lot to remember but you obviously can. I also have my 6M antenna on port 2 also but it does not have to be that way. I can monitor 6M with anther rig. I have purchased and assembled the Elecraft KRC2 band decoder and use it with a 10 port remote switch. The switch is not all that remote. It'is here in the shack but it is a great setup because I never have to worry about transmitting into the wrong antenna. Most radio manufacturers provide band data on the back of the rig in some form or other so this can be accomplished. For me it is a huge benefit. As a matter of fact it works so well I stopped thinking about antennas a whole lot during a contest. Most of my antennas do not require a tuner in the CW part of the band where I usually reside but I use it anyway just so I don't have to worry about what part of the band I am in. This all good as long as I stay on low power and don't manually switch in a special antenna such as NVIS or a loop. I have to think about putting the NVIS antenna on port 2. I need to be able to transmit on this antenna on more than one band. That will solve a portion of my problem. -Robby -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/KAT3-Automatic-Antenna-Tuner-tp4790259p4791710.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
